Bill Sick, left, Jack Rhodes and John Lynch helped save Lexi Sima’s life after she fell off a treadmill at a fitness center. BY GEORGE WHITE
Twelve minutes of miracles by three bystanders Feb. 2 — highlighted by CPR and by fresh batteries in an optional AED — no doubt saved the life of Lexi Sima, 16, of Viera. The miracle: no after effects from when she went flying off her treadmill at full pace at Oraya Fitness Gym in Viera. The gym had an AED, Automated External Defibrillator, a portable electronic device that diagnoses and shocks the patients’ heart out of Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) which causes Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). During SCA, blood stops flowing and after three to five minutes, irreversible

brain/tissue damage may begin to occur. “It threw her like she weighed nothing,’’ said gym regular Bill Sick of Viera, a four-sport athlete through college and former lifeguard. Sick and gym patrons Jack Rhodes and John Lynch started CPR and mouthto-mouth resuscitation “just to keep the blood flowing inside of her and give her some air, whatever we could do,’’ Sick said. When minutes passed without Lexi responding — as two other drowning victims had for him during lifeguard rescues many years previously — Sick, 58, yelled for Rhodes to get the gym’s AED. “He grabbed the machine, read the

instructions, and in a minute put the shock on her. The first time we shocked her we got an immediate pulse back and she started to breathe a little bit,” he said. Added Rhodes: “I did 20 years in the military and every year we would train. Honestly I was probably in more of a panic mode than I’d like to admit. It was really easy. The very first thing it said was to shock. I thought ‘This is real.’ It was terrifying. We slapped it on and she came back.” Sick remembers his mantra during the ordeal. “Keep the blood flowing, keep giving her CPR and mouth-to-mouth, keep that blood

Luau fun makes fitness possible for children, families in need BY LINDA WIGGINS
It’s Zumba, it’s a luau, and it’s a party. How can the Saturday, July 23 Zumba Luau at the Suntree YMCA be any better? It’s all for a good cause, building a strong community that includes members who cannot afford to join but need the health benefits most of all. “The Zumba classes are really popular and really fun, like you don’t even realize you are working out, you are just at the club showing your stuff to great music, but it doesn’t have the downsides of a nightclub,” Suntree Y operations manager Joe Rowlette said. “Members of the Y are always looking for how they can give back to the community and do something meaningful as a group, so this was a perfect event. The luau theme just puts it over the top.” The event is from 9 to 11 a.m. Participants are asked

center memberships and schedule facility tours from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 6. A brief training starts at 4:45 p.m.
“When you volunteer at the Y, you are bringing about meaningful, enduring change right in your own neighborhood,” Rowlette said, reflecting on some of the club founding principles. “The Y is a cause for strengthening community. And, collaboration helps us deliver on youth development, curbing chronic disease, building healthier communities.” Rowlette added that the purpose of the Y is to improve lives of all in Central Florida by connecting individuals, families and communities with opportunities based on Christian values that strengthen Spirit, Mind, and Body. Hot summer months can make it increasingly dangerous to leave a pet or a vulnerable person in the suffocating environment of a parked car. Well, now Florida residents can do something about it. Under House Bill 131, which went into effect in March, it is now legal to break into a car in order to rescue a pet or a vulnerable individual — such as a child or an elderly person — who are in imminent danger. The law, which was signed by Gov. Rick Scott, is in direct response to the growing number of incidents where pets, children and others have died after being left in a car under Florida’s sweltering sun. Chef shares tips for successful National Grilling Month BY GEORGE WHITE
July is National Grilling Month and grillmaster hopefuls everywhere take out their tongs to show their family and friends what magic they can make with fire and meat (or vegetables). First, some facts about grilling: • 63 percent of the United States’ population grills monthly. • 62 percent of Americans own an outdoor grill (63 percent gas grill; 51 percent charcoal grill). • The four foods grilled most often are, in order, hamburgers, steaks, hot dogs and chicken. • In the U.S., Northeasterners grill the most, followed by those who inhabit the North Central, the South, and the West. • The Fourth of July is the largest grilling holiday, followed by Memorial Day and Labor Day. There are important tips to make the grilled meal tasty as well as safe from the threat of food poisoning, said chef Bob McGuire. McGuire graduated with an associate degree and a bachelor’s degree from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and worked as a chef for Emeril’s. He now teaches culinary classes from his home. Outdoor grilling gives food the look and smell of doing barbecue. However, because it can dry out the meat, McGuire normally suggests cooking food 80 percent in the oven or frying pan and then transferring to the grill for searing and putting the marks on it. For those wanting to go ahead and grill, McGuire recommends purchasing a

meat thermometer to ensure the food is prepared correctly so it is safe from causing food poisoning. “People talk about being able to see whether or not the meat is cooked by all different methods. I say put a thermometer in it. There is no rocket science to it,’’ he said. Safe minimum cooking temperatures are 165 degrees for poultry in all forms, 160 for ground meats and 145 for beef, pork, lamb and veal steaks. Once you get the basics down pat, it’s time to branch out to other dishes. There is more to grilling than just meat. “I grill vegetables all the time: zucchini, yellow squash, corn. If you’re worried about it falling in between the cracks in the grill, it should not be on the grill,’’ he said. Some fish, like salmon, needs to be grilled with the skin on to help hold its shape. Other species need a rack “because sometimes they just fall apart,’’ he said. If you want to get fancy, McGuire has a recipe for grilled peaches with almond mousse, pizza using a pizza stone (put the heating stone on when heating up the grill

• Meat should never be pierced with a fork during cooking. • Hamburgers should not be pressed to squeeze out the juices. • Put barbecue sauce on at the very end of cooking. One of the longest expanses of unspoiled beaches in Florida, Canaveral National Seashore encompasses more than 90 square miles or 58,000 acres. Situated on a barrier island that starts at New Smyrna Beach, the park provides 23 miles of undeveloped shoreline where visitors can learn, swim, fish, boat, surf, hike or just relax. In 1975, Congress established Canaveral National Seashore when it created an act to protect and preserve the natural, scenic, scientific, ecologic, and historic values of certain lands, shorelines and waters of the State of Florida as well as to provide for its public outdoor use. Canaveral National Seashore is one of 11 national parks participating in the Centennial Paddle Challenge. Since 2016 is the centennial year of the National Park Service, Florida’s national parks have challenged park visitors to canoe, kayak or use a stand-up-paddleboard to paddle for 100 miles. The miles do not need to be paddled at one time or even at the same park. Take a selfie and tag #FLNPS100PaddleChallenge and #FindYourPark on social media. Paddlers who log at least 100 miles and bring their selfies to a park visitors center will walk away with a specially-designed, one-ofa-kind iron-on patch to mark the achievement. Two buddies find career options on the ball field
VIERA VOICE Thomas E. Penders
Bob Schweiger instructs Becky Penders on how to connect her bat to the ball in the Viera Suntree Little League Challenger Division. BY MARY BROTHERTON
Honorable Charles “Charlie” Crawford approached Dave Zavetz 10 years ago about establishing a challenger division in the Viera Suntree Little League (VSLL). “My three boys and the two Zavetz children, along with dozens of other teenagers, have been buddies over the last 10 seasons. All of them have expressed, in one form or another, how much being a challenger buddy has helped them grow emotionally. They develop empathy and the understanding of how we are all really more alike than not, even with so many differences. The
challenger and buddy program has been a huge success in large part to the Zavetz family and their dedication to the VSLL special needs kids who just want to play baseball like the rest of the kids,” Crawford said. The Little League Challenger Division began in 1989 for students ages 4 to 22. Today, more than 30,000 children with special needs enjoy the game of baseball. The teams focus on abilities and players wear the same uniforms and safety equipment as other Little League players. Michele Zavetz, who signed on along with her husband, said all players must wear safety equipment. “They have to process it,” Michele Zavetz said. “One boy, Joey, wanted to walk around the field first. Joey started going through the process. We watched him get it. When they get it, they feel accepted and good about themselves.” The challenger division uses buddies who assist the players on the field, while encouraging independence. “The buddies are amazing kids and adults, but what happens is you end up being selfish,” Michele Zavetz said. “You get more from the kids than you give. They are so loving and giving. For me, the reward is when you figure out what is special to each child. We don’t force anything as long
as they come out. We’ve had a lot of buddies who fell in love with the kids and have moved on to be special-ed teachers, social workers, occupational therapists.” Jenna Zavetz went with her parents to the first challenger

Currently studying to be an occupational therapist at the University of Florida, she intends to make a career of working with children who have special needs. “The littlest things make them proud. didn’t recognize there was any difference. They were just new kids I was going to hang out with.” Jackie Mijuskovic is another buddy who was profoundly influenced by her work with the challenger division. Recruited to play softball at Flagler College, the recent Rockledge High graduate will major in special education with an eye toward working with children who have autism. Mijuskovic said, “Five years ago, some of the girls I played travel ball with introduced me to the program for a way to earn community service hours. I fell in love with it. I bonded with two of the players, even though the kids come and go. Jackson wanted nothing to do with Challenger, at first. Then, there’s Becky. She has cerebral palsy, autism and was born without eyes. She’s the best! She took to me and we got very close.” Becky also developed a special bond with another buddy who is now a coach. When Bob Schweiger retired eight years ago, he wanted to do more than donate to United Way. “I prefer to work one on one,” Schweiger said. “I thought this was the neatest thing to get involved in. Becky was the first one I met. When she patted my hand and kissed my cheek, that was it.” Schweiger said he takes special pride when he can help a player improve. “I feel good. I get a good feeling that I’m helping them. They like me and respect me. I get their friendship. That develops over time. A couple have gone from being players, to being buddies and helping us with the younger kids. They are all my children.” Dave Zavetz said girls tend to volunteer more often than boys. Two stellar exceptions are brothers Jackson and Zachary

Taylor. Their mother, Angie Taylor, said both boys are active in sports. “I’ve noticed Zachary has taken a liking to his role as a buddy. He cares about these kids. Zack has a new appreciation for coaches as a result of his association with the challenger division. He even drove the golf cart to a challenger game when my husband and I had other obligations and couldn’t drive him. He didn’t want to miss the game. The regular season is over, but the VSLL Challenger Division has been invited to play an exhibition game at the Little League Southeast Regional Headquarters in Warner Robbins, Ga. on July 29. Current VSLL president John Glendinning said the trip, which requires extensive planning and preparation, has been made possible through one man who donated $3,500. “It’s a big deal,” Glendinning said. Viera High’s Costello retires after 40 years of coaching BY CARL KOTALA
Dave Costello has certainly won his share of titles in 40 years of coaching track and field. But for the man who has now retired after spending the past nine years at Viera High, it’s never been just about the trophies. It’s been about something much more important. “When you coach, it’s all about the kids,” Costello said. “Improving them. Making sure they do good in school. And what they learn on the athletic field helps them further down the road. … You want them to graduate and be successful.” Costello, 67, had an impressive 31-year career at Elizabeth High School in New Jersey. After retiring, he thought he was done coaching. Then came the opportunity to help get the track program at Viera High off the ground. During the past nine years, the Hawks won seven district titles and just finished perhaps their most successful season by winning six medals — most in program history
— at the state meet. “When I started here at Viera, I had like 15 kids out,” Costello said. “Now, we had the biggest turnout (125) we’ve ever had. I just think it’s time to go. Every now and then, you know when it’s time to go.” Viera athletic director Chris Gallagher called Costello an “outstanding coach” and added the Hawks were “fortunate to have him coaching so many young athletes.” One of those athletes, JP Caglione, finished third in the shot put at this year’s state meet and graduated in June the proud owner of the school record in both the shot put and discus. He received a scholarship to Charleston Southern University. “Ever since freshman year, he believed I was going to be the next one to break the records, and four years later, I was the one to do it,” Caglione said. “He’s come early in the morning for me. He’s come in the offseason for me. He texted me during football season about the track schools that were interested in me. “I owe him a lot. My own personal

success was because of him pushing me for the past four years.” Kaitlyn Jensen, who will be a senior this fall, also owns school records in the shot and discus and placed in both events at this year’s state meet. “He is the brightest, funniest guy,” Jensen said. “I’m going to miss him so much next year. I’ve known him
forever. He’s like my dad … He’s a great coach.” Costello was quick to point out he has had some great assistant coaches at Viera through the years, along with strong support from the administration. But after 40 years, it’s time to play some golf. “It’s been a fun ride,” he said. VV

Space Coast Crew celebrates 20th anniversary with satisfying trip to nationals BY CARL KOTALA
Space Coast Crew coach Ethan Shoemaker wanted to mark the organization’s 20th anniversary with its best season yet. Well, it’s definitely time to celebrate. The SCC sent two boats — the Girls Lightweight 4 and the Boys Youth Quad (sculling) — to last month’s U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships in West Windsor, N.J. It was the first time an SCC boys team had qualified a boat for the nationals since 2006. The girls qualified in the Lightweight 8 last year, but it was their first time since 2008. there and getting them the exposure,” Shoemaker said. “Then, hopefully, that builds on itself and we continue to get more and more kids there. This year, we’re taking nine. Hopefully, next year, we take 18 and continue to grow in that regard.” Shoemaker, who took over the program in 2012, has been steadily working to help Space Coast Crew fulfill its goals of becoming the best team in the county and then moving up to be among the best in the state and the region. Well, after winning the Brevard Cup for an unprecedented fourth year in a row in April, the SCC saw its rowers win a record 50 medals at the state championships — including wins by the two boats that
would go on to the nationals. “Our goal has actually gone beyond the state of Florida,” Shoemaker said. “Now, we’re really focused in on getting better and better regionally throughout the southeast and becoming one of those clubs that people talk about, one of the teams that you’ve got to beat if you want to be considered fast.” Eastwood, who has been rowing for two years, loves the team aspect of the sport and the way her SCC teammates work to help one another. “You can’t move without any of the other girls putting in as much work as you are,” Eastwood said. “The feeling you get when everything’s just perfect on the water is

Olympian rallies support for new Viera YMCA complex BY LINDA WIGGINS
VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins
Three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Rowdy Gaines urged members at the June 9 Viera Means Business networking meeting to invest in the construction of the proposed Viera YMCA.
Limited spots available for 2016-2017 school year
Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines took time out from busy preparations as a commentator for the coming Summer Olympics to spur investment in the proposed Viera YMCA. Speaking to a capacity crowd at the Viera Means Business monthly networking breakfast, Rowdy said the facility will save lives in more ways than one. “Drowning is the No. 1 cause of death in children age 4 and under,” Gaines said as VMB members dined on a gourmet brunch buffet provided and prepared on site at Calvary Chapel Melbourne Viera campus. The sponsoring business is located adjacent to the five acres of land The Viera Company has provided for the YMCA, on Stadium Parkway across from Viera High School and next to Viera Charter school, which will share the YMCA’s athletic facilities. “Teaching kids to swim reduces that risk by 90 percent.” Obesity is the other killer, and as children spend more time in front of smart phones, tablets and laptops, the epidemic of inactivity is sure to grow, Gaines said. Swimming and the activities available at the proposed facility will help families get in the habit of physical fitness, he added. Gaines learned to swim at his local YMCA. In addition to

— ROWDY GAINES the health benefits, exposure to the sport helped make him a three-time gold medal champion against all odds, the story detailed in the brand new book, “Rowdy Rising: from Rejected to Unrivaled” by Dainon Moody, the forward penned by Gaines’ fellow TV personality Bob Costas. “Swimming taught me the values and disciplines that made it possible for me to win gold medals” Gaines said. “I can tell you that would not have happened if I didn’t have a YMCA in my community.” Winter Haven native Gaines is now the vice president of aquatics at the Central Florida YMCA and the 28 pools in the region, including the one at Suntree YMCA at which VCS swim team members now practice. Donor families have already committed more than $2 million of the $7 million in needed construction dollars, including the naming opportunity for the gymnasium that will be announced when other major donors are named this
fall, CFYMCA discrict vice president Dr. Brenda Fettrow said. Once the total reaches $4 million, groundbreaking will take place, she added. The facility is vital to the community’s economic growth, said one businessman. “Business has been phenomenal in the area because of the family and community focus of Viera,” Rob LaMarr of Viera’s Lexus of Melbourne said. “This project will contribute to those strong family and community values and keep our economy growing in the right direction.” For more information or to donate, call Fettrow at 321403-2635 or email bfettrow@ cfymca.org. Recently graduated Viera golfer finishes 2nd at state amateur BY CARL KOTALA
Sophie Liu found out a lot about herself at Florida’s oldest and most prestigious women’s amateur golf tournament last month. The recent Viera High grad, still just 17 years old, finished second at the 87th annual Women’s Amateur Championship at the Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach. “It was a lot of fun,” Liu said. “It was a long tournament. I played a lot of golf (122 holes over four days). It was a lot of fun getting to play match play because I don’t get to do that a lot. Succeeding in match play is really exciting.” As tremendous as Liu’s runner-up finish was, the journey just to get there was perhaps the most rewarding. Playing in a field that featured 104 of the state’s top amateur golfers, Liu shot 5-over 77 in each of the first two rounds. She thought her tournament was over. However, after finishing her second round, Liu found out she was in a six-way playoff to get into the match play portion of the tournament. As she prepared herself for what was about to come, Liu thought
to herself that someone was going to advance: “Why not me?” She won the playoff on the fifth hole to become the No. 32 seed. That meant she had to open match play against No. 1 seed Alexa Popowitz of Boca Raton. Tied after 18 holes, Liu sank a birdie on the first extra hole for the win. Two more wins put her in the semifinals against Ayaka Nakayama of Oviedo. After tying up the match on the 14th hole, Liu won it with par on No. 18 to advance to the finals, where she would fall to Emma Albrecht of Ormond Beach. Though Liu has had a lot of success in her young career — she won the state junior amateur last year and finished second in the state while playing for the Hawks — the tournament gave her a lot of self-assurance. “Playing match play is way more competitive than stroke play,” she said. “You’re thinking a lot about your opponent, about your game. Just being able to go one-onone with another player and to beat them, that helps a lot with your confidence.” It was certainly an
experience that Liu, who is headed to Iowa on a golf scholarship, will be able to build on in the future. “After playing the second round, I didn’t think I was going to make it to match play,” she said. “So being able to make it to match play, being able to beat the first seed, being able to make it all the way to the finals and having a chance to compete is definitely, really amazing.” VV

Inside the Ropes BY DAVID D. HORST
One of the Viera East Men’s Golf Association’s weekly outings coincided closely with Memorial Day as we were taking time to remember our fallen military who made the ultimate sacrifice. Not surprising, a high percentage of the VEMA golf community have served in the military, from the Korean War to Desert Storm. I thought it would be appropriate to recognize a portion of our members who also served in the military (a number of VEMA members are snowbirds and

A unique installation at Viera Woman’s Club BY JUDY DEANGELIS
Every two years, there is an installation of newly elected officers. But, this year’s GFWC Viera Woman’s Club Installation ceremony fell the day after Mother’s Day, May 9, and coincidentally, the installation became quite the mother-daughter affair. Sarah Anthony, one of six past presidents in attendance, took on the duties of the installation program and it was a lovely ceremony. Candles were extinguished and lit again as new officers exchanged places with retiring officers at the head table. Anthony created a shoe analogy to illustrate the role women have in empowering lives. “Shoes are symbolic of womanhood.” Tongues to encourage, inspire, and empower. The heel is tough to accept challenges. The sole reminds us that though we are unique, our souls are as one. Each of us leaves a unique footprint as women. When it came time for the new first vice president to step forward, Anthony started with “Sally” and then stopped abruptly. “I just can’t call
you ‘Sally’; you will always be Mom to me.” It was a poignant moment for Anthony and her mother, Sally Kramer. Both women have devoted much to the Viera club. Anthony served as GFWC Viera president from 2010 to 2012 and later served four years as Hacienda Girls’ Ranch state chairman for GFWC Florida. Hacienda Girls’ Ranch becomes home for girls in crisis and is the only ongoing state project for GFWC Florida. Anthony also held an executive position at The Children’s Hunger Project, a program to feed hungry children on the weekends. Sally and Clyde Kramer moved from Spokane, Wash. in August 2012 to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren and soon thereafter, decided to join the Viera Woman’s Club. She has served as Home Life Chair, and this year she was selected as club Volunteer of the Year. And now, Kramer will serve as first vice president. Both Anthony and her mom, have left their unique footprints as spirited volunteers in our community. VV

Teen trades school traditions for the grand jeté BY LINDA WIGGINS
Most 15 year olds look forward to chatting with their friends at school, homecoming and proms. Educators and the public invited to free ‘unconference’ of idea sharing SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Suntree United Methodist School will offer kindergarten this fall for the first time in nearly a decade, allowing students from this year’s VPK class to move up.
Popular private school brings back kindergarten BY LINDA WIGGINS
A renowned private school in the Suntree/Viera area will be offering kindergarten this fall for the first time in nearly a decade, thrilling families whose children have attended as young as age 2. The accredited Suntree United Methodist School has maintained a waiting list for much of its 25 years. The school’s educational focus is not merely the subjects themselves, but the actual act of learning itself, imparting skills that students will employ throughout their school careers, according to the school administrator, adding that teachers are trained to spot learning milestones and employ interventions to help individual students meet and exceed them. “We don’t believe in a onesize-fits-all style of education,” said Dr. Kelly Dwenger, who realized a dream of heading up the school this past year after a storied career in public schools. “Each child is unique and should have their individual needs met in a way that matches where they are developmentally and academically.” Dwenger was a teacher and writing coach at Suntree Elementary School before moving up to the district level as a writing coach for all elementary teachers, rotating on-site to area schools. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Florida, and her master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Central Florida.
Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy will host the South Florida EdCamp Leadership event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, July 11. The oneday annual “unconference” is for educators serving Early Childhood through 12th grade. Current and prospective private and public school teachers, administrators and leaders are invited to this free event to share innovative strategies, ideas and challenges for a day of connected teaching, learning and leadership. Registration is open to anyone who would like to attend. Each session consists of a conversation, not a presentation. According to organizers, participants are encouraged to rely on the “law of two feet” to find a session that inspires them. “Too much of professional
development today is topdown and doesn’t meet the needs to the participants,” said Catherine Koos, head of Lower School for Holy Trinity and host of EdCamp Leadership South Florida. “EdCamps are driven by educators looking to share the things that matter most to them. Being surrounded by passionate educators who love teaching is revitalizing and is the perfect way to spend a lowstress summer day.” EdCamp Leadership South Florida will take place at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy Lower School, 5625 Holy Trinity Dr. in Melbourne. Lunch will be provided. For more information or to register, go to midcareer.gse.upenn. edu/edcamp-leadership. For answers to questions, email Catherine.Koos@htes.org. Suntree United Methodist School provides a high ratio of teachers per students, 12 - 15 students to one teacher and one aide per class.
“I’ve spent 17 years in the world of education and now I am at a place where I can put all the things I’ve discussed with my peers as dream scenarios into action. So often in public education we have things that hold us back from implementing what we as educators know is best for students, for example, legislation, finances, highstakes testing, red tape to get services, and so on,” Dwenger said. “Here at SUMS we get to make decisions based on what we know is best practice and with the knowledge that when we make choices on curriculum and our delivery model, that we have each individual child in mind.” In addition to classroom instruction, students attend weekly chapel, music, art, Fun Trail, and Hands-on Science with Dr. Diana, a local child development specialist. Each class has a garden of
the students’ own in a new outdoor Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathmatics area, and access to three covered playgrounds designed for specific age levels. “The children here at SUMS will learn to grow spiritually, socially, academically, physically and emotionally,” Dwenger said. “Each child will have the opportunity to build positive learning experiences, grow in self-concept and selfesteem, and gain abilities in problem solving.” The maximum number of students per class is 12 -15 with a teacher and a full-time assistant. The kindergarten teacher will be certified early child development teacher Carol Platzer and full-time assistant Michelle Zulon, whose children are SUMS alumni. DeLaura Middle School students win National Yearbook award BY WENDY SCHEURING
DeLaura Middle School was the only school in Brevard County to receive the National Yearbook Program of Excellence Award. Only three schools in the central Florida area received the award given by Jostens, the country’s largest yearbook publisher. Suntree/Viera residents Mackenzie Downie, Jordyn Welton, and Taryn Aebli were recipients of this elite award. For a yearbook to qualify, 55 percent of the student population must buy the book, 50 percent of students have to be covered at least three times, and all deadlines need to be met, including cover deadlines and major page submissions. DeLaura Middle School can attribute its yearbook’s success to English teacher Anna Nagy’s tutelage and the student staff’s creativity and hard work. But, Nagy and the 20 students that comprise the yearbook staff know that making a yearbook isn’t just about taking pictures and putting them into a book. “It’s actually like running a business,” she said. “The kids learn how to talk to one another, how to interview, and how to remain objective. They learn how to write an email to someone they don’t know, and how to approach someone when

they are frustrated. These are the life skills that these kids learn,” Nagy said. The 2015-2016 themed yearbook entitled “Elements” is a spin on the Periodic Table of Elements. Student pictures appear in element squares, highlighting their specific interests, hobbies or skills and are scattered throughout the pages of the book. Broken into segments, the book
had a chronological element, a human element and a competitive element, among others. “At the end of the book, we did a periodic table that looks like DeLaura,” Nagy said. Nagy and her student staff will be recognized at the regional conference at Disney World in July. And, “Elements” will be featured at the national conference this summer,
in addition to being in the Jostens National Look Book. “The element is the most basic form and cannot be duplicated,” Nagy said. “At DeLaura, we only have students for two years, seventh and eighth grade, so this unique group of kids can never be duplicated.” she added. VV

Harsh elements turn boys to men BY LINDA WIGGINS
Suntree-based Boy Scouts Troop 224 spent a week at Camp La-No-Che Boy Scouts Central Florida Council camp in early June, a number of the boys camping without parents for the first time since moving up to Boy Scouts from Cub Scouts Pack 224, and some spending time
away from parents for the first time, period. The Central Florida facility, on land bequeathed to the Boy Scouts, sits amid thousands of acres of pristine forest in rural Paisley. Urban development has not yet displaced animals and insects of legendary type and size. “The bugs were incredible.
Spiders and beetles getting right into the mesh nets that go over the boys’ cots. The weather was crazy hot, we weathered a tropical storm and had to evacuate the tents and relocate to the mess hall one night,” said Troop 224 coordinator Kerry Ramage, mom of first-year scout Gavin and seasoned scout Ian.

Channel knife Skewers and toothpicks Melon Baller 2 Black Olives 1 Strawberry Instructions: 1. Wash the watermelons under cool running water and pat dry. Using the large kitchen knife, slice off about a half-inch from the bottom of the oval watermelon to create a sturdy base. 2. Use the dry erase marker to draw an outline of the Cheshire cat face, hair tufts, eyes, eyebrows, mouth and teeth. Use the channel knife and paring knife to trim away the design so the features of face begin to take shape.
3. Use the paring knife to cut away the outline from the top half of the carving and away from the back to create a fruit bowl. Pull away any excess pieces of the rind from the back of the carving. 4. Use the melon baller to hollow out the carving and have fruit to fill the carving.
5. From the oblong watermelon, cut a candy-cane-shaped tail from the rind and use the excess watermelon as fruit to serve or to make watermelon juice. Attach the tail to the back of the carving using wooden skewers. Attach half of the strawberry with the top removed as the nose with toothpicks and the black olives as eyes with the picks.

Plant sale helps grow a garden for community’s hungry
BY LINDA WIGGINS
Karen Shea and Kendall Sanderson had long been connected spiritually. They just didn’t know it. Both members of Suntree United Methodist Church thought the time was right to create a community garden of vegetables and fruits to help those in need get better nutrition than the typical fare of nonperishable foods given through area food pantries. Once they connected, they decided to work together. “We both work and are busy, but we thought this was something that really needed to be done,” Sanderson said. The community came together to help launch the project, Blue Sky Community Garden, during a fundraiser plant sale and farmers market June 18 at the church. Proceeds from the event will help purchase a well, fencing and gardening supplies. More donations are needed. Shea, an architectural designer, and Sanderson, an ecologist working in energy efficiency and water conservation, both have green thumbs and organic gardens at home. They will begin building the vegetable garden this summer, with a goal of planting seeds in the fall. The garden will be housed on part

Produce raised in the vegetable garden will be shared among the volunteer gardeners and also donated to local soup kitchens and similar charities. Fruit trees will be added. Produce will be used for meals provided to homeless families who live
at the church through the faith-based nonprofit Family Promise of Brevard, and also used for meals that are taken to Daily Bread soup kitchen and served up by a team of church volunteers. The food will be used strategically. While the church has a food pantry, for example, it is not set up to handle perishable items, Sanderson said. It does not continue cooking,” he said. According to the Food Network, the history of grilling begins shortly after the domestication of fire, some 500,000 years ago. Until well into the 1940s, grilling mostly happened at campsites and picnics. Regional variations developed, leaving us today with four distinct styles of barbecue: • Carolina-style has variations largely in the sauce: South Carolina uses a mustard sauce; Western Carolina uses a sweeter vinegar-andtomato sauce. • Memphis barbecue is probably what most of us think of when we think of barbecue — pork ribs with a sticky sweetand-sour tomato-based mopping sauce. • Texas, being cattle country, has always opted for beef, usually brisket, dry-rubbed and smoked over mesquite with a tomato-based sauce served on the side. • The sweet-hot, tomatobased sauce is the model for most supermarket barbecue sauces. Computer Care Clinic at Suntree Station plaza hosted the nonprofit in its spacious back room at no charge for much of the past year. The space accommodated a dozen-plus laptop stations and a 3D printer through full-capacity summer camps that will continue through July 11. MineCraftEdu runs from 9 a.m. to noon and 3D Printing from 1 to 4 p.m. “We’re so thankful for them helping us get our start,” Slayde said. It’s not a car. It’s not a motorcycle. It’s a Slingshot. Oregon resident Bruce Koch, 77, who spends winters in Indian River Colony Club (IRCC), is planning on driving a threewheeled motorcycle-like Slingshot on the trip of a lifetime. But first, he flew back here June 10 to attend the Special Forces convention in Jacksonville, and then he will drive the Slingshot cross country to his home in Oregon. He spoke during a break in driving between Salt Lake City and Boise, Idaho on the trip out. “I’m taking my Slingshot back to Oregon but I’m going to make a round trip out of it,’’ he said. And what a trip it will be, with planned stops in “Biltmore Mansion in N.C., Mammoth Cave, Ky., Ozarks, Pikes Peak, Colo., Black Hills, S.D., Glacier National Park in Montana, Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyo., Sun Valley, Idaho, and on to Oregon.” The Slingshot is manufactured by Polaris Industries, has a tiltadjustable steering wheel, side-by-side bucket seats, and does not lean. It has no roof, doors or side windows. The steering wheel, gear shift, and brake, clutch and throttle pedals have a conventional layout. The Slingshot weighs 1,743 pounds and is powered by a 2.4 liter inline fourcylinder engine formerly used by GM in the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky sports cars. “I just got the machine a year ago. It’s lot’s of fun. It has two wheels in front. This particular style of motorcycle is like driving a small sports car. There’s a couple of them around Melbourne. I have two cats

and they can’t ride on a slingshot, obviously, so that’s why I made the first trip,’’ said. This is Koch’s sixth winter at IRCC, which he visited by chance when his son moved to Florida. “I stopped by to see an old friend and I ended up buying a place not long after that,’’

he said. Koch was looking forward to the Slingshot portion of the journey, planned with no support vehicle. “I’ll be 78 by the time I complete the trip in July. I’ll be on my own. I’ve been single for many years. It’s kind of a bucket list thing,’’ he said. VV

Swanky Sole plans second anniversary party in August BY MIKE GAFFEY
Swanky Sole, an upscale shoe boutique that recently moved to Pineda Landings in Suntree, is set to celebrate its second anniversary in mid-August. “We’ve done exceptionally well here,” owner Dawn Badolato said of the shop at 6395 N. Wickham Road, Suite B-106. “We’ve grown considerably in a very short period of time.” Badolato first opened Swanky Sole in downtown Melbourne in July 2014, then moved her shop to its current 1,200-square-foot location in February. “We had maximized what

we could do there, so we were looking for a larger space in a more growing area, and up here it’s been crazy with growth,” said Badolato, who worked in real estate for 24 years before opening her boutique. Swanky Sole offers unique, quality shoes, handbags, accessories and gifts for women in their mid-30s to mid-60s, Badolato said. Designer shoe brands include Donald J. Pliner, Frye and FLY London. “If it’s in someone else’s store in the county, we don’t sell it,” Badolato said. “If another boutique tries to get one of our lines, we will drop it.”

Dawn Badolato owns Swanky Sole, an upscale shoe boutique in Pineda Landings in Suntree. Badolato said the move to Suntree made even more sense once she learned that La Moda Boutique, a designer-inspired women’s clothing retailer that’s been in Brevard County for 16 years, was relocating from Satellite Beach to Pineda Landings. The two businesses are now nextdoor neighbors. “Being next door to La Moda has been a really good move for us,” she said. “They actually helped me

New Rotary club will give Suntree/Viera members choice of time, day The newly forming Rotary Club of Viera will meet at noon Wednesday, July 20 at Tequila Azul restaurant at The Avenue Viera, 6630 Colonnade Ave. in Viera. It is the first official meeting of the new club. The club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Suntree and Viera Voice. Members network to build commerce and strengthen charitable services in the community, primarily
for the benefit of children. The choice of day and time will give area members a choice that best fits their schedules, said Suntree Rotary member Mike Pisacano, who is spearheading the launch of the club and will remain a Suntree member. “We meet at 7:30 a.m. Fridays in Suntree, and that’s great for the members who attend,” Pisacano said. The club meets at Suntree Country Club and hosts other events
there, including the major annual fundraiser for chosen charities, Great Tastes at Suntree, each October. “It might work better for some members, including new members, to meet the middle of the week at lunchtime,” he said, adding that he will continue an ongoing drive for new members for both clubs. Two young bobcats, also known as kits, were found in a Palm Bay backyard pond on June 1. The homeowners first thought they might be otters before realizing they were young bobcats. The homeowners carefully collected the pair and brought them to Florida Wildlife Hospital (FWH) in Palm Shores for care. Both kits were very thin and weak and one was unable to bear weight on his back legs. Brevard Zoo’s veterinarian, Dr. Trevor Zachariah, offered X-ray services and expertise to diagnose a physical cause. Unfortunately, none was found. FWH staff worked with the young kit, but he did not survive. “Sadly, that is the nature of wildlife rehabilitation,” said FWH director Tracy Frampton. “Wild animals are often in pretty bad shape by the time they make it to us. We do our best, but we can’t save them all. However, his sister is doing well.”

The two kits will be introduced at FWH soon, pending medical treatments, where positive interaction with staff and volunteers is kept to a minimum. “We are so excited and optimistic about this pair of bobcat kits. If they do well, we can expect that they will be with us for another five months,” Frampton said. “We take in more than VIERA VOICE Florida Wildlife Hospital 5,000 patients each year This young bobcat was rescued from a backyard pond. and provide professional and dedicated care on a Single bobcat kits often fail to thrive simply because they minimal budget. Added Lynch: “He pushed the button. I started an extra set of compressions and it (Lexi’s heart) kicked in. The AED said ‘heart beating. Stop CPR.’ To be honest, I was in shock. I couldn’t believe what just happened. It was a blur. Fantastic,’’ he said. Lexi was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando. Doctors later installed an internal defibrillator to shock her heart back into rhythm if need be. Oraya Fitness Gym owner Tony Hopkins purchased his external AED in 2007 for about $2,000, but it was never used. Its battery had run down and been replaced only six months previously. “It sat there for seven, eight years, and it could have sat there forever, but I’ll tell you what, the time when somebody’s life was saved by it, it makes you feel good that you had it around,’’ he said. Lexi will start her junior year with a new view on life. “It’s kind of made me step out of my box a little bit to do more to help people,’’ she said. Her mom said Lexi has not had another problem. An AED readout confirmed her good health. Now, she wants AEDs in more places and heart screenings for high school student athletes. “You have to understand

Devereux Florida Viera Campus is seeking donations of indoor and outdoor fitness equipment. Devereux serves children with intellectual disabilities, mental illness and behavioral disorders, and also provides a treatment center to address various challenges. It recently took on a key role in addressing human trafficking, providing treatment for rescued victims. “Exercise has tremendous mental benefits,” said Dr. Joel Brenner, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness. “Studies show that kids who exercise get better grades, have better concentration and get more restful sleep.” For more information, email or call Patty Hurst at phurst@devereux.com or call 321-258-1772. Event co-chair and Crosswinds board member Lt. Andrew Walters, second from the left, introduces crime scene technicians from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit.
Get a clue, go to the zoo BY LINDA WIGGINS
In what promises to be a creative and fun way to give back to the community, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey wants to deputize you to solve a crime at the second annual “Clue at the Zoo,” a Safari Mystery fundraising event for Crosswinds Youth Services Saturday, Sept. 17 at Brevard Zoo. Guest detectives will be invited to put their CSI skills to the test and try to identify the mystery villain. Various crime scenes and clues will be present throughout the zoo. Guests will be given time to examine each scene, question each other and come to a conclusion of “who done it.” One guest detective’s ticket will be drawn for a grand prize. “With the collaboration of the Sheriff’s Office, Crimeline and local law enforcement agencies, this event is fun and exciting — everybody loves a mystery,” Crosswinds president and CEO Jan Lokay said. “We are always grateful for the strong support of our community, and we are
looking forward to additional sponsors and food vendors partnering with us for this event to help meet the needs of some of our most vulnerable children and youth who come to Crosswinds in time of crisis.” Proceeds of the event will benefit Crosswinds Youth Services, a nonprofit organization in Cocoa that provides emergency shelter for children across Brevard age 10 to 17, as well as counseling, case management, transitional living and other services for youth in crisis and their families. Crosswinds’ mission, creating opportunities for young people to succeed, embodies the organization’s primary goal of helping young people reach their full potential regardless of any barriers or challenges they have faced. VV Tickets for the event are $50 per person. Sponsorships are available at various benefit levels from $500 to $10,000. For more information, call Misty Campbell at 321-4520800, ext. 205.

Seal, who has rejoined the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Community Orchestra, had been visiting Colorado for a niece’s wedding and decided to take a horseback ride. “We were just walking in a field and we were going to get going a little faster. I’ve been around horses. The horse just planted its front feet and bucked me over his head. It wasn’t like I fell off. I was bucked off. That horse was just in a mood,’’ Seal recalled.
“When I fell, the first thing was all the pain where the breaking happened. Then, the numbness started here and kind of slow, you could feel it take over down the body. I knew exactly what happened and that I could move my hands,’’ she said. “I could tell where the paralysis was. My only concern was breath support and could I be the player I used to be and am I going to get all of it back? I’m still working on it. I feel pretty good. I’ve already played a concert and it was fine,’’ she said. Initially airlifted to a Denver hospital, Seal would end up moving to nearby Craig Hospital in Englewood Nov. 3, a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital that specializes in

the neuro-rehabilitation and research of patients with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury. Craig is a not-for-profit, free-standing national center for excellence that has treated more than 31,000 patients since 1956. She returned to her Melbourne home, now modified for an electric wheelchair, in mid January. “My husband Tom completely renovated everything for me and I have an electric chair that can raise up for me to use the counters and sink. I can drive a van with hand controls that my wheelchair pulls right up to the steering wheel,’’ she said. She started playing French horn again in March. Seal graduated from The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a degree in music education. She has been part of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra since 2009. “What we had done at Craig is we went to a music store to see a horn and I could tell then it was going to work fine. They asked me what I wanted to do. Anything you want to do, they help figure out how to do. They said what do we need to do to get you back on your horn?” The biggest challenge is lungs, of which she only feels the top portion. “Sitting is fine and I can adjust my chair,’’ she said. Space Coast Symphony saved Mary’s chair — fourth horn — which will fit her current abilities just fine, she said. “That’s low horn and that’s perfect for what I can play. I need to keep practicing and adding a note and adding a note,’’ she said. VV

Maggie Castellano of the Brevard County Planning and Development Department defended her title and won the apple pie bake-off contest for the second straight year during the All-American Celebration June 24 at the Government Center in Viera. BY MIKE GAFFEY
Just days before the Fourth of July, Brevard County government employees threw an All-American Celebration of their own. Brevard’s Cultural Diversity Team hosted a two-hour event June 24 at the Government Center in Viera that saluted American foods and traditions. Guests at the second annual gettogether enjoyed a lunch of hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs and chips, viewed historical and educational displays, sang karaoke and played cornhole. Pie lovers also could cast their vote for their favorite apple pie baked by government employees, said Venetta Valdengo, assistant county manager. “It’s a lot of fun,” Valdengo said. “That usually gets a lot
of participation.” For the second year in a row, Maggie Castellano of the county’s Planning and Development Department took home the top prize for her apple pie. Castellano won a gift certificate for her tasty creation. Brevard’s “Team Diversity” is a group of county employees charged with promoting better understanding of Brevard’s cultural differences, Valdengo said. “We celebrate different events throughout the year to recognize different ethnicities, different cultures,” Valdengo said. “We also celebrate black history, Hispanic heritage and women’s history. We did a resolution for Native Americans. So we’re expanding every year. It’s great.”

In anticipation of a Father’s Day away from home, we decided to have an early celebration in green style, so to test drive an electric car we went. We scheduled a test drive of model X with the OrlandoEatonville Tesla. Whoa! The car is just amazing and the idea of not ever needing an oil change or a tank of gas again is super attractive. In fact, what could be better than a zero emission car with reduced maintenance cost for life? Only that same car powered by solar energy — and that is probably not far from happening! From the demands for solar energy infrastructure

investments to the research on transparent solar panels, we should soon be having solar chargers for car batteries, solar roads (solarroadways.com) that charge your car as you drive or even auto-recharging vehicles that use the sunlight that hits their own body structure and windows to recharge their battery. Richard Lunt, assistant professor at Michigan State University, is working on creating a transparent solar panel “to deploy solar energy in a non-intrusive way,” the kind of “solar harvesting surfaces that you do not even know are there. […] Researchers are confident that [this technology that uses transparent luminescent solar concentrator (TLSC)] can be scaled all the way from large industrial and commercial applications, down to consumer devices, while remaining affordable.” (ExtremeTech.com) The future points to solar. Florida residents will have the chance to show their support of solar energy by voting YES on Amendment four that will be on the Aug. 30 primary ballot. If passed, that amendment will exempt renewable energy devices, including solar, from the tangible personal property tax as well as the assessed value solar systems on commercial property. So in support of solar, vote YES 4 The Sun.
Solar energy has gotten investors’ attention, too. Mike Eckhart, Citigroup managing director, for example, has been paying attention to the market for a long time and declares that investing in renewable energy is good business. The market for renewables has grown so much that “in the last five years,” he says, “the cost of solar electricity dropped 80 percent and the cost of wind dropped 50 percent.” Eckhart is excited to see the change and explains why investing in manufacturingoriented products is the way to go. In sum, resourceoriented products, like natural gas, are a bad investment since the more we use of it, the less we have left, and the higher their cost. Manufacturing-oriented products, like solar energy, are the opposite — the more we produce, the less they cost. On top of that, there’s the impact of price volatility of resource-oriented products that “can have a negative effect on the economy, consumers, and the environment,” affirms the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), and Florida heavily (over 68 percent) relies on natural gas. Conservatives for Energy Freedom (CFEF) director Debbie Dooley also fears that “too much reliance on natural gas is risky for utility customers because the price
is so volatile.” More and more organizations are realizing that, making them back investments in renewable energy. In the meantime, Florida Power & Light (FPL), the third-largest electric utility in the United States, is greatly investing in natural gas. It opened its Port Everglades gas-fired power plant this past April and has submitted a rate hike proposal to cover, among other things, investment of $1.3 billion toward a new natural gasfired power plant. The company has also spent more than $4 million of its profits to support policies against maintaining or expanding rooftop solar development for customers. FPL investors may gain from those moves in the short run, but what about FPL’s more than 4.8 million customers? What about the environment? As I now prepare to attend a Citizen’s Climate Lobby’s conference in Washington D.C., I’m bringing those questions with me in hopes that more can be done to positively influence a trend that we’ve seen for too long. I’m sure changes need to happen because “change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future” — John F. Kennedy.
