Pineda Causeway bridge work likely to take more than 2 years BY MIKE GAFFEY

Pineda Causeway’s bridges are undergoing concrete repair work that is expected to take until fall 2020 to complete. Crews will fix concrete tops of bridge seawalls at six locations along the four-lane, east-west Pineda Causeway, also known as State Road 404, which crosses over the Indian and Banana rivers and links to the beachside, ending at State Road A1A

just south of Patrick Air Force Base. Seacoast Inc. of Oldsmar is the contractor for the $3.9 million project, which will extend from U.S. 1 to west of South Patrick Drive. It is estimated to take more than two years to finish, according to the Florida Department of Transportation, which maintains the causeway. Hurricanes are hard to predict, slow moving and they cause a lot of damage. As far as natural disasters go, Earth doesn’t boast much more to be fearful of in Florida. For those caught unaware or underprepared, it can mean an awful two or three months. Hurricane season officially began June 1, but it usually doesn’t hit Florida with its full fury until Aug. 1. The National Weather Services urges every Florida resident to have a hurricane survival kit. Develop an evacuation plan. Do not wait. Find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone. Plan where to go and how to get there. Many Floridians choose to “ride out’’ a hurricane. Do not be one of those people. Be safe and evacuate.

Hurricane Irma was threatening from the outset. Assemble disaster supplies. Purchasing supplies well in advance is a good plan. Don’t wait since the store’s shelves might be empty in a last-minute rush. A good household ratio is to have one week of food for each person.

When the power goes out, pharmacies can’t fill prescriptions. Have enough medication to last an extended period. Hurricane survival kits should include: • Food and water • All necessary medication

• Batteries, a radio and chargers • A full tank of gas for each automobile • An ample supply of cash Trim trees, collect loose outdoor items, apply proper window coverings, secure doors and find a safe location for vehicles to prevent damage due to a hurricane. Work with neighbors to make sure everyone is prepared for the worst. Collect supplies, assist with the evacuation process or simply call neighbors to see if they are prepared. They will appreciate it. Complete a written plan. It’s too easy to forget something if it’s not on a written list. Emergency numbers should be on this list. A family discussion about hurricanes also can help prevent last-minute mistakes or panic at the thought of evacuating. VV

EOC director emphasizes hurricane plan, staying informed BY JULIE STURGEON

Is your family prepared for the hurricane season? Even if you have a plan, it is good to review it each year. This includes having a household plan, an evacuation route, a supply kit and a pet care plan during a hurricane. During a recent interview, Emergency Management Director Kimberly Prosser offered a common-sense approach to the hurricane season. “We always want to remind the public that every storm is different,” Prosser said. “Just because you have experienced one hurricane does not mean you have experienced every type of hurricane.” “If you were here for Matthew and Irma, those were two very different storms, Prosser said. “The next one is going to be different still.” A visit to the Brevard County Emergency Management website is time well-spent. The site has invaluable information on how to prepare for a hurricane — and how to stay tuned during a hurricane or other natural disaster. One resource on the site is how to build a basic disaster supply kit. A disaster supply kit is a collection of essential items your household may need during an emergency.

Among the recommended items for the kit are a gallon of water per person per day for three days, a three-day supply of non-perishable food, flashlight and batteries, a first aid kit, local maps and cell phone chargers. If you evacuate, take your kit with you. “You should make decisions and prepare no matter what,” Prosser said. “We have a brochure called your pathways to preparedness You can download it from our website; it’s a pdf or you can pick up a copy at any of the libraries.” Steps that household members should take, per the Emergency Operations Center, include: Read and follow the Pathways to Preparedness. Discuss family/household plans for disasters that might affect your area and plan where to go. Understand how to receive emergency alerts and warnings. Collect information. Create a paper copy of the contact information for your family that includes phone numbers (work, cell, office), email, social media, medical facilities, doctors, service providers and schools. Share information. Practice your plan. Identify information and pick an emergency meeting place. Additionally, Prosser emphasized the importance of being prepared for all elements of a hurricane. “A common misconception people have about hurricanes is that it’s just about the wind speed, because the categories are based on the wind speed,” Prosser said. “In addition to the high winds

associated with hurricanes, other components associated with these storms can inflict significant amounts of damage.” So, what are these other components? “There are four different components of a hurricane and wind is just one of them,” Prosser said. “Another one is

storm surge, which is when waters rise in the rivers. And there’s also rainfall of which we experienced quite a bit in Irma.” “And the fourth one is tornadoes,” Prosser said. “We had eight confirmed tornadoes in Brevard County with Irma.” To keep abreast of the latest local weather conditions during a storm and throughout the year, Prosser advised calling the county’s Community Information Hotline, 2-1-1. Specialists have the most up-to-date information on sandbags, evacuation routes and shelters, and how to get help after a storm. Residents of Brevard County also can choose to be notified about local emergencies through an automated call notification system. AlertBrevard is a primary tool used by Emergency Management to send important safety information to Brevard residents and businesses. If you rely on a cellular phone as your main telephone

number, you are strongly encouraged to sign up by visiting the EOC website. Additionally, residents can stay tuned to EOC updates on social media sites. “We are very active on Facebook and Twitter,” Prosser said. “Take a look at our website and Facebook sites. International Space Station can be seen all over Earth BY KYLE MCDONALD

Orbiting well above everyone’s head and traveling at more than 17,000 mph, the International Space Station is the third brightest object in the sky. Did you know it can be seen with the naked eye? There is an easy way to find out when and where to look in order to see this modern marvel. Built in Nov. 20, 1998 and put into orbit by the Space Shuttle program, this orbiting space laboratory is a culmination of human ingenuity and the determination of 15 cooperating countries. For the past 17 years, not a day has gone by that a human being has not been in space. This continuous presence in space has been beneficial for the space program, human life on earth and science in general. According to NASA, “In the areas of human health,

telemedicine, education and observations of Earth from space, there are already demonstrated benefits to human life. Vaccine development research, station-generated images that assist with disaster relief and farming, and education programs that inspire future scientists, engineers and space explorers are just some examples of research benefits.” At 356 feet long, the ISS is the largest spacecraft constructed by man. With a price tag of more than $100 billion dollars, it is the world’s most expensive single object ever. Maintaining orbital velocity at 17,000 mph, the ISS orbits the Earth once every 97 minutes. That means astronauts are able to see 16 sunrises and sunsets in the course of a typical day aboard the International Space Station. Seeing this incredible object in the sky is actually

The ISS is only visible for about 6 minutes at a time and it appears as a bright star streaking across the sky. There are no actual lights on the outside of the space station. The Sun's light

reflects off of its surface. The International Space Station is one of humanity's greatest achievements and proof of what can be done when countries work together. V V

Diane Pisacano was sworn in as the new president. “I value each and every one, family and friends and Rotarians,” Hutto said. “We had our ups and downs, and we lost an important member of the club. Summer brings out the best, worst in alligators BY EVA M. REY

Since it’s almost summer in Viera, it’s time to start talking about alligators and their ecological presence and role. As it warms and as mating season nears, more and more of them will be seen. I don’t know about you, but I love alligators. They are mysterious, majestic and fierce. I am fascinated every single time I see one — and I am a native Floridian. It just never gets old for me. However, this fascination is tempered by a healthy respect for their place in the Florida ecosystem. And, if you live in Florida, it is your responsibility to learn all you can about the alligator and how to live harmoniously with them — and the rest of the dangerous Florida wildlife. Too often, people move here from other parts of country and do not understand alligators. They will insist to their homeowners association that all alligators must be removed (and killed) from every single pond in every neighborhood. Well, that is a bit extreme — don’t you think? One thing I tell all my new residents at the New Resident

Orientation is … you wouldn’t move to Alaska and not learn about the Kodiak Bear, would you? Then why move to Florida and not learn as much as you can about the Florida Alligator? They were here first and they are a part of our natural environment. We can co-exist if we follow some basic rules and accept their natural behaviors such as: Don’t feed the alligators! It is both dangerous and illegal. And, when fed, alligators overcome their natural dislike and wariness of humans and learn to associate people with food. I’m sure you see where this is going. … People = Food is bad. These are the alligators that show up in our garages and on our back porches. These are the alligators that

have to be killed because humans were negligent and disrespectful of the natural environment. Dogs and cats are similar in size to the natural prey of alligators. Don’t allow your pets to swim in water that might contain alligators. Assume all fresh water bodies have alligators. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn. Leave alligators alone! State law prohibits killing, harassing or possessing alligators. They are not pets. Courtship begins in April for alligators during mating season. You will begin to hear the bull alligator calling out to the females. You will also see males traveling from pond to pond looking for their lucky lady. If you like to walk in the evenings after dusk, bring a

flashlight and watch where you are walking. Alligators are ectothermic, which means they have to rely on external sources to regulate their body heat. This is why you see them sunning themselves out of the water. It is not because they are hunting. It is because they are trying to raise their body temperature so that they can digest food and so that their bodies can function properly. Alligators are dormant below 55 degrees and stop feeding when the ambient temperature drops below 70 degrees. Alligators are opportunistic feeders. Adult alligators eat fish, snakes, turtles, small mammals and birds. Young alligators eat insects, amphibians, small fish and other invertebrates.

Female alligators rarely exceed 10 feet, but males can grow much larger. Here is a startling piece of Florida alligator trivia — the largest alligator caught in Florida was right here in Brevard County in 2010 in the Lake Washington area. It measured 14 feet, 31/2 inches. Unfortunately, there are times when the Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) hotline needs to be called to report an alligator. If an alligator is no longer afraid of humans, there is no way to live in harmony. So, if anyone feels that an alligator poses a threat to people, pets or property, then call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286). SNAP uses contracted alligator trappers to remove alligators. However, be aware that alligators are killed, not relocated. If you want to see an alligator, go to the Viera Wetlands. It’s really cool when the young ones are becoming active (late summer/early fall) and just cross the path in front of you without a care. It didn’t take long for the USSSA Pride to establish themselves as must-see entertainment for local sports fans last season. And that was while the United States Specialty Sports Association’s Space Coast Complex was still under construction. Well, if you can consider last year’s Brevard County debut a success … you haven’t seen anything yet. The Pride kicked off their 2018 National Pro Fastpitch Softball season with a fourgame stint May 30 to June 2 against the Aussie Spirit. “I think it’s going to be a big difference for the fans,”

Pride assistant general manager Megan Willis said. “We have a lot of our own youth tournaments surrounding the games, so you’re going to have a lot of out-of-towners, you’re going to have a lot of softball players, a lot of people that want to come out and look. “I think that’s going to drive the hype around the community.” Last year’s Pride team went 40-9, winning the NPF regular-season title for the fourth year in a row and sixth time in the past seven seasons. This year’s team should be just as talented, if not more, than that group. Brevard County’s own Kelly Kretschman, who won her

third consecutive NPF Player of the Year award last season, is back along with former Eau Gallie and University of Florida standout Alex Powers. Catcher Chelsea Goodacre won the league’s Gold Glove Award last season, while shortstop Shelby Pendley won the Home Run Award. First baseman Hallie Wilson was a first-team AllNPF pick last year along with Pendley, Kretschman and pitcher Keilani Ricketts. This year’s pitching staff has been re-tooled as Jordan Taylor (first-team All NPF) and Hannah Rogers were traded to the Aussie Spirit and Jailyn Ford and former University of Florida star Delanie Gourley were brought in to team up with a talented group that also includes former Florida State All-American Jessica Burroughs. Decorated travel ball coach Mike Stith has joined the team as head coach for this season with a staff that includes Cody Dent and former Pride player Andrea Duran. Duran Golf Club is celebrating its 13th anniversary this month, and once again … it’s doing it in style. The celebration will take place from July 2 to 7 at Duran with different specials taking place each day on the course, and at the Tradewinds Restaurant. On “Madness Monday” (July 2) there will be free greens fees after 10 a.m. (cart required), or a two-forone on the Par 3 course or smash greens fee. Tuesday (July 3) will feature double loyalty points on greens fees or a free smash racquet rental. On July 4, the club will host a Red, White and Blue Big Cup Tournament. For those who don’t want to play in the tournament, but want to get out to play that day, there will be $12 rounds of golf after 2 p.m. (including cart). Thursday (July 5) should be a big day for local military personnel. All active or

retired military will receive free greens fees on the Championship Course or the Par 3 (cart required). Friday (July 6) might be the day to take the kids out to play. Duran offers complimentary range ball upgrades and free range with greens fees or juniors can play for free on both courses with a paying adult. The celebration culminates on July 7 when there will be a drawing held around 2 p.m. and the winner will receive free greens fees for a year on the Championship Course. Harsh weather helps golf layout at Viera East Golf Club BY DAVID D. HORST

Heavy rain in May has bolstered the golf course at Viera East Golf Club. The aerated greens have returned to their challenging state and the rough has grown to save several out-ofbounds shots. The snowbirds have returned to their northern climates, and the players who still are here are wisely drinking a lot of water on the course. Staying hydrated in Florida is a key to survival. On a sad note, Larry Wolf has died. He was one of the original VEMA members. He

will be missed. On June 7, Fred Bogle recorded a hole-in-one on No. 16 during a VEMA individual-flighted play 40man event, which utilized a Stableford scoring system. Guy Sullivan won Flight A. Ross Shiffrin, Bogle and John McComas finished second, third and fourth, respectively. Steve Wing won Flight B. Abe Leonard finished second. Bill Scholtens was third, and Marc Brown placed fourth. Ernie Parra won Flight C. Tony Hines, Dick May and Mike Schmitt placed second, third and fourth, respectively. Ed Raleigh prevailed in

Flight D. Glen Tarsha was second, Sir Frank Westwell placed third, and Duck Milne was fourth. On June 14, VEMA utilized a new format with fourman teams using the three best balls and holes chosen randomly for scoring purposes. Lane Burney had fun calculating the results in the pro shop. Three teams tied for first. John McComas, Bruce Schwanda, Tom Howell and Gary Koch were one team. Bob Urban, Dale Zeigler, Craig Smith and a fourth random player were a second

team. Bill Scholtens, Frank Westwell, Ed Raleigh and a fourth random player were a third team.

Choosing right college was big for Viera High student BY CARL KOTALA

Picking the right college is one of the biggest decisions any high school student can make. After all, it’s not just about you wanting the college. The college has to want you, too. For Viera’s Aniya Cosby, whose father went through the United States Air Force Academy, the choice was simple. But she also knew she had to have other options, just in case. “When I was younger, I always thought about (the U.S. Air Force Academy) because my dad has this gigantic plaque in the living room,” Cosby said. “It’s just like, ‘This is what you get when you join the Long Blue Line,’ and I was like, ‘Hey, I want my own plaque.’ “But hey, if it doesn’t work out — it’s only a 10 percent acceptance rate — I’ll go other places because I like them, too.’” Cosby would eventually land a spot at the United States Air Force Academy

Preparatory School in Colorado Springs after a process that was two years in the making. Along the way, she also applied to — and was accepted by — Stetson and Colorado Christian. She even thought about John Cabot University in Rome, where an older sister studied. The process of getting accepted to the Air Force Academy Prep School was arduous, but one Cosby is glad she followed through to the end. It included trying to find a sponsor, taking a physical, doing physical fitness tests and paperwork. Lots and lots of paperwork. “I actually started my nomination process before I ever applied to a school,” Cosby said. The paperwork issues were difficult in that it was done online and sometimes something didn’t upload properly, or the computer system was down.

She also was a part of the Viera High JROTC Raiders program and ran track at the school. After qualifying for the candidate stage, she eventually received a Presidential nomination to the Academy. The waiting was tough, but after visiting the U.S. Air Force Academy last October as part of her father’s Class of 1977 reunion, she knew that’s where she wanted to be. That only made her more determined to get there. “I think when you finally see your goal, you really want to push for it,” Cosby said. “When we visited the Air Force Academy and I finally looked at what it actually was — the campus

and everything — I was like, ‘This is really nice. I can picture myself here.’ ” She found out she was accepted at Stetson in early February but was still holding out hope. Finally, in April, she found out that while she had not been accepted to the Air Force Academy right away, she could go to the Academy Preparatory School with a chance to move on to the Academy after one year. Now that she’s been through it, Cosby has spent time helping others get through the process and offered advice for students trying to choose a college. “I think the earlier you start, and just stick with it … yes, it’s going to be hard, but just find the bright side in everything,” she said. “I know it’s cliché, but that’s literally the only way you can get through it.” V V

Viera Charter School leaves armed safety to professionals BY LINDA WIGGINS

Viera Charter School signed a contract June 15 for a Brevard County Sheriff's Deputy to work as a “new era” of School Resource officer in response to increased school shootings. “We are excited that we were able to come to an agreement with Sheriff Wayne Ivey and his Sheriff Department,” said Robert Jordan, chairman of the VCS School Board. Traditional public schools in the Viera/Suntree area and beyond are in the process of hiring lessexpensive armed security guards and have until next spring to get them in place, according to Brevard County School District officials. “With the recent school shootings and the uneasiness of parents about protection of our children, we thought it prudent to enter into an agreement with the professionals who not only know the law but have a great deal of experience with enforcement and safety,” Jordan added. In a press release that aired on all local television news stations, Sheriff Wayne Ivey commended VCS officials in contacting him immediately after the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland to start the process. VCS is the only charter school to contract with BCSO. VCS was initially offered

VCS Principal Dr. Julie Cady told this to faculty at a recent staff meeting and was greeted with applause and relief that they would not possibly be tasked with security on top of their other duties. “We have been told a number of times that we have one of the safest schools in the district,” Cady said, “but we also know that those safety procedures will be better enhanced by the addition of a law enforcement officer who is well trained and trusted to do the right thing to keep our children safe each day.” The high safety rating starts with the design of the school, said District 4 School Board member Matt Susin, “From day one, Viera Charter has always put the safety of their students first with their implementation of the single-point entry system and enhanced security initiatives that were implemented with the design of the school,” Susin said. This new contract marks a new era in School Resource Officers, Ivey said. “The school will be getting a fit, tested, weaponstrained individual who is specifically trained in what to do in the event of a school shooter,” Ivey said. “And you'll also get the aspect that is wonderful for children as they grow, bringing in the blood hounds, the bomb squad, and all the great things children love to see that also lets them know that law enforcement is there to help them.” Additionally, the SRO

will work with school administrators in planning procedures in the event of a crisis, oversee the parking lot areas each morning and afternoon to monitor incoming and outgoing traffic, and work with faculty and staff in presenting programs to students relating to law enforcement and judicial procedures. With the agreement signed, VCS will have an opportunity to screen and select the SRO in July. Ivey lightened up the serious topic of school shootings when he also underscored the safety measures employed by VCS.

“The most dangerous situation on this campus occurred five years when I picked the names from the lottery of the students who would get to go to the brand new Viera Charter School,” Ivey said. “I think I lost a lot of votes that year from families who didn't get picked.” VCS, which specializes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Science (STEAM) Education, is a privately-run charter school that uses public school funds to provide school choice. Volunteers from the Space Coast Jazz Society are bringing music to the children at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health, an intensive residential treatment facility for children who have had a tough time in life, despite their young age. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In a lot of cases, these children have been abused, neglected or traumatized,â&#x20AC;? said Patricia Hurst, donor relations manager at Devereux in Viera. Among the 132 residents, ranging in age from 5 to 18, are also girls who have been saved from human trafficking. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have some serious emotional issues,â&#x20AC;? Hurst said. Devereux, one of Floridaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most comprehensive child welfare and behavioral healthcare organizations, serves children with mental health, intellectual or developmental disabilities and behavioral health challenges. Approximately two-thirds of the current student body are of middle

or high school age. More than half are from Florida, but many out-of-state students are referred to Devereux because many states do not have this type of program. The typical length of stay is nine months to a year and a half. The new music program will offer an additional avenue of communication with the children. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our kids typically donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get exposed to music, so for the Space Coast Jazz Society volunteers to give of their time and talent for these children is amazing,â&#x20AC;? Dedicated volunteers assist in the plight of sea turtle survival BY JULIE STURGEON

Sea turtles, one of the most ancient creatures on Earth, are hard at work during the summer months on Brevard County’s beaches, spending their evenings digging nests and laying eggs. The official sea turtle nesting season extends from May 1 to Oct. 31 in Brevard, which is when local and county ordinances are in effect. Like salmon, female sea turtles return to their nesting grounds each year. Brevard beaches are a favorite nesting area for three of the seven existing types of sea turtles. Loggerheads, named for their block-like heads, are the most common sea turtles in Brevard. Green and leatherback species also nest here. Watching one of these large, gentle reptiles slowly clamber onto the shore, then

For a chance to see a loggerhead sea turtle without disturbing her, the Sea Turtle Preservation Society (STPS) offers educational treks on the beach throughout the summer during the evening. The turtle tours require walking up to a half mile, so participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring bug repellent. enthusiasts in Brevard County. During a sea turtle walk, skilled STPS volunteers educate groups and search for a nesting loggerhead. “We’ll see her (a sea turtle) coming up out of the water, then she comes up and uses her rear flippers to dig a hole,” Konkel explained. “When she starts to drop eggs, we bring our group down.” A loggerhead can lay up to 120 eggs, and the process takes about half an hour. Later, Konkel said, when a loggerhead is done laying her eggs, she uses her rear flippers to replace the sand. But sometimes, a sea turtle carves out two or more nests before she is satisfied enough to lay her eggs. “Recently, we watched a loggerhead start a body chamber about five or six times,” Konkel said. “Once she was almost ready to start laying eggs, then she moved up the beach again.” “If a sea turtle doesn’t make it over the high-tide line, it decreases the viability of the nest,” Konkel said. Every successful nest helps ensure the future of the three threatened and endangered sea turtle species that nest on Brevard’s beaches. Brevard is one of Florida’s five beach counties that account for 74 percent of the state’s loggerhead sea turtle nests. Although there are many green turtles nesting in Brevard, they dig deeper nests and endure a muchlonger nesting process. Green sea turtle populations have increased during the past decade, in part due to protected beaches like the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in South Brevard. More than 25,000 green sea turtle nests were reported by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in 2017 for Brevard. Leatherback sea turtles are the least common species on Space Coast Beaches, with less than 60 nests reported in 2017.

“If a sea turtle doesn’t make it over the high-tide line, it decreases the viability of the nest.” Florida is the only continental state where leatherbacks come to shore. Leatherbacks are currently a vulnerable species, meaning their population is decreasing. Last year, Konkel said, there were 23,377 loggerhead nests in Brevard, while in 2016 there were 33,000 recorded nests. The incubation period for sea turtle eggs is 50 to 60 days. Hatchlings might take as long as a week to dig themselves out of the nest, and the odds of survival are stacked against them. “About one out of 1,000 is the survival rate,” Konkel said. “The eggs are a big part of the food chain.” Hatchlings typically emerge at night, when darkness serves as a cover as they edge their way into the sea. They remain there, solitary, until it is time to mate. One pitfall for hatchings is ghost crab holes. “Ghost crabs will dig holes next to a nest and the hatchlings can fall into the nest, trapped,” Konkel said. Natural predators include racoons and birds. But other factors, including trash, rising temperatures and higher sea levels, have impacted sea turtle populations. Beach erosion causes cliffs that sea turtles can fall from, leading to death. Artificial light can cause confusion for sea turtle hatchlings. Such artificial lighting also can misdirect and disturb nesting sea turtles. Area ordinances strictly prohibit lights from being projected onto the beach between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. during turtle nesting season. Cell phones and flashlights also are prohibited. A great way to learn about

—Craig Konkel sea turtles and their plight is by attending one of the Turtle Talk presentations. These are informative and fun, and take place at locations throughout the county. Turtle Talk attendance is required of all volunteers who might encounter close contact with turtles. The Sea Turtle Emergency Response Program (STERP) is a volunteer-based group that assists post-hatchling sea turtles that wash ashore in Central Brevard County. STERP volunteers search for and rescue post-hatchling sea turtles. Untangling hatchlings from seaweed is an ongoing project for volunteers. Most of what is known about sea turtle behavior is obtained by observing hatchlings and females that leave the water to lay eggs. Although they can live up to 50 years or more, sea turtles’ lives are often cut short, commonly due to accidental capture by fishing gear. Brevard County beachgoers can do their part to help sea turtles by leaving beaches free of trash and belongings, and not using cell phones or flashlights at night. Beach visitors should fill any holes dug in the sand so nesting and hatchling turtles don’t become trapped. Dogs have shared special bond with humans throughout time Man's best friend follows us through hard, good times BY ERNEST ARICO

Throughout the ages, man has called dog one of his closest companions. They are commonly referred to as “man’s best friends.” Man has also called him protector, helper, lifesaver and provider. Dogs are an incredible friend to man because they have been there through the years, through any task and any challenge, but the relationship between man and dog goes a bit deeper and older. The friendship between man and dog dates back more than 15,000 years when dogs, who originated from a common ancestor, followed man throughout his migrations in East Asia. According to the website Daily Treat, psychologically, this connection makes sense because both man and dog are social beings. Neither can thrive when alone, and both benefit mentally — and often physically — from such a strong bond. Having a dog at home, at work, or even on the battlefield, gives us a listening ear, a warm paw to hold and even strong legs to run beside. In fact, it was during war that this

bond between man and dog began to take shape. During World War I, the German Army reported that its soldiers had been attacked by vicious, wild and ferocious mountain dogs of Bavarian folklore during the 1918 battle of Belleau Woods. Soon afterward, a Marine recruiting poster depicted a snarling English bulldog wearing a Marine Corps helmet. Because of the tenacity and demeanor of the breed, the image took root with both the Marines and the public. The Marines soon adopted the English bulldog as their mascot. According to Heritage Press International, at the Marine base at Quantico, Va., the Marines obtained a registered English bulldog, King Bulwark. In a ceremony on Oct. 14, 1922, the Marines signed documents enlisting the bulldog, renamed Jiggs, for the “term of life.” Jiggs died on Jan. 9, 1927, and was mourned throughout the Corps. His satin-lined coffin lay in state in a hangar at Quantico, surrounded by flowers from hundreds of Corps admirers. He was interred with full military honors. Since Jiggs’ death, many English bulldogs have been enlisted to become mascots and members of the Marine Corps. To this day, that is why the English bulldog is the perfect

Dogs have proven themselves time and again to be loyal, kind and understanding. They are able to greet us happily after what may have been the worst day of our lives, and make us feel better with a wag of the tail and a playful grin. Dogs are at our sides on the battlefield with our soldiers and with our law enforcement officers patrolling our borders, airports and streets. Dogs are there when we are sick, sad and lonely. They love us even when we are grumpy, rude or downright mean. Dogs are the ones who seem to understand us on a level even we cannot fathom. The Lash Lounge offers glamorous choices for women of all ages

Women looking for a luxurious look have a new option as The Lash Lounge, co-owned by Ray and Laurensia Spurgin, opened six months ago. It is located at 2270 Town Center Avenue, Suite 101, near the entrance of Central Park at the Avenue Viera. “As a little girl, I was fascinated with lash extensions,” Laurensia Spurgin said. But Laurensia Spurgin’s quest for finding a local salon that did lash extensions began three years ago. “My wedding was here in Melbourne, and I wanted to get my lashes done. There were no salons that specialized in lashes. So, I

had to drive all the way to Orlando. I felt like there was a need. That something needs to change here. That there were women here like me that like that luxurious look.” The couple had been looking to open a franchise, and they kept bouncing around the idea of opening a lash lounge. “We fell in love with the concept. I felt it was a business that I could really relate to because I have a passion about it. I really like to see women having that confidence and feeling beautiful. This is where I want to be.” Getting an eye lash extension doesn’t hurt. In fact, it’s really quite relaxing, Spurgin said. The procedure takes about two hours and clients often

fall asleep during the process. The human eye has approximately 100 lashes. The lash stylist will extend about 80 percent of your natural lashes. A synthetic product is used to make the lash extensions look natural, and a medical glue is used to attach them. Your natural lashes will shed, however. “They can last up to a month, but we recommend coming in every two weeks to get an in-fill,” Spurgin said. Clients can choose from “silk,” which is very big at the base, like a bold mascara look, or “mink,” which is lighter than “silk,” more natural, and very luxurious, like a Kardashian kind of look. Lashes can also be tinted and curled.

Making a difference in the Viera community through giving, the Viera Woman’s Club invites area women to attend its annual membership social Aug. 17. The club members encourage volunteerism in the community through club membership. “The 115 members in Viera meet over lunch and go over volunteer opportunities,” said Judy Small, the publicity chair for the organization. “The membership social is

held every year in August and is purely social. We have wine, lemonade and hors d’oeuvres and each of our chairs gets up and talks about all the opportunities we have in the community to volunteer.” Under the motto, Living the volunteer spirit and making a difference in our community, the organization is in its 15th year. There are several community service projects managed by the organization. Areas include education, conservation, home life

Wolf Scout Den #3 won a challenge during a Cub Scouts Day Camp at F. Burton Smith Park in Cocoa. The camp, which was sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America’s Central Florida Council, was held during the week of June 11 to 15. More than 150 Cub Scouts attended the camp. To kick off the summer, my family and I went to the mountains for a week. I felt like a child straight out of Richard Louv’s book, “The Last Child in the Woods.” The smell of fresh air, the multi-tone green of trees and multi-color of flowers, the peace in the sound of birds and wind, the lines in the horizon created by uneven mountains and rocks, the bright blue of the sky and the feeling of mild temperatures on my skin made me feel part of nature. It was refreshing and invigorating. Once that feeling took over, it was more of a pleasure to go out exploring places, learning about and admiring the beauty around me and the preciousness of natural spaces. I felt connected. Nature is magic. We observe and come to realize that “everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible,” as Louv states in his book. And, perhaps, we should follow his advice: “never treat life casually.” Nature is healing; healing of the heart. The

As Louv well puts it, “time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment in our children’s health (and also, by the way, in our own).” We exercise and play without noticing! Playing, especially unstructured, imaginative, exploratory play, the kind that naturally happens outdoors, in nature, is recognized as fundamental for the healthy growth

and development of any individual. So much so that this summer NewDream. org launched a community action challenge open to anyone around the globe: Play! The goal of the challenge is to make communities more playful through finding or reviving a pastime that brings joy while building connections and strengthening relationships. Check their website and consider giving it a try. When we visit natural spaces, we tune our senses; we see how everything fits together; we feel the power of nature, and we fall in love with it. It makes it easy to understand why it is so important to protect our national monuments and national, state and local parks. If you’re looking for something unique and fun to do this summer, the Brevard Zoo has you covered. An exciting new exhibit, known as Butterflies & The Magic of Nature, just opened for the summer. “Butterflies are really just these things of beauty and magic, and we wanted to point out that’s everywhere,” said Keith Winsten, the executive director of the Brevard Zoo. Here, guests can immerse themselves in an enchanted butterfly aviary, along with other open animal habitats. Included in the exhibit are baby Nubian goats, a giant alligator snapping turtle, colorful birds, as well as training demonstrations and hands-on nature play activities. The new exhibit also highlights the importance of pollinators in the environment and how people can protect

At a year old, Mocha, a rescue cat, is royalty waiting for conversation and cuddles. Nancy Mellor, the owner of Purrfect Friends, a cat rescue located in Suntree, has both adult cats and kittens in coats of many colors, hair length and varieties from Siamese to Maine Coon. But the most important — she has kitties for adoption. “Cats like Mocha sometimes go in a few weeks so for the harder-to-place ones that is where I am reaching to get the word out,” Mellor said. “Mocha would like a home of her own as the only cat child.” Cat rescue has been in the area for 13 years. “I started fostering kitties and I thought it would be something I wanted to do,” Mellor said. “The first was a mother with seven babies and I got hooked and saw a need for it. A lot of cats are euthanized and fostering

saves lives. I decided I liked that and started my own rescue group in 2005.” Housing the cats in her home, Mellor has seven other foster families helping and housing rescue kittens and cats. “All our fosters see the cats have their vaccines and are spayed and neutered. We rescue from shelters or outside feral cats. We just make sure they are healthy and make sure they are adopted. We do not euthanize. “I have a lot of repeat customers,” Mellor said. “I have been doing this so long that when they are ready for another cat they are coming back.” To adopt, all it takes is a careful interview of the potential adopting family, an $85 adoption fee and a chance to have a photograph of the adopted cat in its new forever home. Mellor receives and welcomes donations to run the rescue and is a 501(c) (3) pet rescue, so donations are tax deductible. We try to get people to buy into it and think outside of their comfort zones. Contests can bring attention to it.’’ Hash is participating in the James Beard Foundation’s (JBF) Blended Burger Project. It is a nationwide contest that challenges chefs to make a

blended burger by blending ground meat with finely chopped mushrooms to create a delicious, healthier and more sustainable burger. The contest began May 28 and will run through July 31. Hash’s Just Peachy Burger is a blend of dry roasted Monterrey cremini and oyster mushrooms blended with chuck and sirloin meat, topped with smoked Gouda, white peach mostarda, parsnip aioli and crispy guanciale. Anyone who likes peach cobbler and hamburgers will want to try the Just Peachy. “The idea came from a peach dish that I won a

By dialing 2-1-1, help is just a phone call away, for those in emotional, financial or community crisis. "2-1-1 Brevard Inc. is a private, not-for-profit, 24hour hotline serving Brevard County, Florida," the website states. This includes suicide intervention services. Belinda Stewart is Communications Manager. She helps people get help. "We connect people with whatever community, government or social-service resources they may need," she said. For more than 40 years, the telephone-based helpline has offered crisis intervention, information and referral

services. In the last fiscal year, specialists logged about 50,000 calls. Callers have ranged in age from ten, to their 90s. Stewart recalled a young caller who had become a "cutter." "This is someone who cuts him or herself to relieve emotional pain, often in secret," Stewart said. 2-1-1 Brevard helped to get family members involved and outside help. Stewart spoke of another caller in her 90s. "She had become afraid of living alone because she could no longer help herself," Stewart said. The organization rallied assistance. Most callers are young to middle-aged people

Gus Bierwirth never knew his grandmother, but a personal mystery was solved when he attended a recent family history event held at the Suntree/Viera Public Library. “My mother and my father were all I knew,’’ Bierwirth said. “My mother never told me about her mother. As far as she was concerned, she didn’t have a mother because she died at birth.” Sheila Winkelspecht, a family historian, organized the event which included free instruction from FamilySearch volunteers. “The convenience of the Internet and the indexing of historical records means that anyone interested in their heritage can spend a few minutes now and then gathering and documenting their family history,’’ Winkelspecht said. “You don't have to wait until you're retired. What used to take a lot of time now takes minutes.” The event was free and attended by Brevard County residents seeking information about their ancestors. The family history volunteers ranged from Daniel Tatton, a homeschooled 13-year-old who is earning his Genealogy Merit

Badge, to retirees who want to share the gift of family with others. Colleen Coker discovered that the family historian assisting her was likely related to her grandfather. “It was really fun, ” Coker said. She found it interesting how family members came from so many various places. “It’s strange that everybody came to Melbourne. What are the odds of that?” William McKinney came to the library event prepared with most of the names of his family for three generations. After spending the afternoon on FamilySearch, McKinney had a nearly complete sevengeneration fan chart and one ancestry line dated all the way back to 1584 on the Isle of Sky. McKinney was particularly surprised by the fact that many of his early American ancestors had very large families. “For me, it’s interesting to see my family history and how many possible relatives I have.” FamilySearch is a nonprofit family history organization dedicated to connecting families across generations. It is a service provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For more information

It’s a fun sandwich to mess around with.’’ Hash’s friend Toni Elkhouri convinced him to enter the JBF event. Elkhouri, the chef at Cedar’s Cafe in Melbourne, won the JBF two years in a row. Hash, who grew up in both South Florida and Pennsylvania, was raised in an Italian family. But, he appreciates diversity in foods. “I like specialty sauces, different techniques and different teaching styles,’’ Hash said. “I have a good feel for marinaras, and I like the French demi glace. From my time in the Philadelphia area, I have a deep appreciation for Philly cheese steaks and pretzels. When I visit a city, I don’t look for activities. Brevard improving Interlachen-Wickham intersection

Work has begun on intersection improvements at Interlachen and Wickham roads in Suntree. Brevard County Public Works Road and Bridge Construction crews will widen Interlachen Road at Wickham Road and add a dedicated left-turn lane onto Wickham. Road work began June 4 and should be completed around August, according to the county.

alternate routes to access the Suntree Community via Pinehurst (Avenue) and/or St. Andrews (Boulevard).” Utilizing alternate routes, the county said, will help to alleviate potential traffic delays and congestion at

the busy intersection just west of Suntree Square, a shopping center at 7777 N. Wickham Road that is anchored by a Publix Super Market. As part of the construction, the last of Suntree’s dark green entrance signs is being replaced. The sign stood at the Interlachen Road median at Wickham. Construction of a new sign should start about six months after intersection improvements are finished, said Todd Foley, general manager of the Suntree Master Homeowners Association. The new sign, he said, likely will resemble entrance signs at other Suntree intersections, which are light tan, made of bricks and feature a more subtly colored sun and tree logo, with lighting added to the left and right of the Suntree lettering, and with matching brick planters in front of each sign.

“They’ve got to finish their project before we can even dream ours up,” Foley said of the county. “We don’t know what space will be provided and the line of sight obstacles and things of that nature that are just too early to determine.” The Interlachen Road sign was not renovated because of the county’s intersection improvement plans, Foley said. “Why upgrade something and spend a considerable amount of money just for it to get torn down in a year?” he asked. County Commissioner Curt Smith said in an email that he was “proud” to be able to move the “long overdue” project forward. “I want to thank the Public Works employees for their determination to find a solution that will make traveling that area much easier and safer for the folks in Baytree and Suntree,” Smith stated.
