couldn’t feel more blessed to be part of that mission.”

According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. In the U.S., more children die of cancer than any other disease.

The Big Shave raises funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation by encouraging people to sponsor shavees through monetary donations. Shavees had to make a minimum of $50 to participate.

With more than 16 participating teams, the St. Baldrick’s Big Shave fundraiser got competitive.

Health First’s Blake’s Brigade came out on top after raising $31,000. Team

D5 raised $21,000 while Brevard County Fire-Rescue (Brevard’s Bravest) donated $11,000.

When Sally and Aaron got married in 2006, Aaron turned to his new bride and said, “Are you ready for the adventure?”

Little did the Kalaroviches know that in just two years, they would be the proud parents of triplets. That is when they learned the true meaning of the phrase, “It takes a village.”

“They do not hand you an owner’s manual when they discharge you from the hospital,” said Aaron Kalarovich, who works for Lockheed Martin at the Cape in the engineering facilities department. “We were learning on the fly as we went.”

The Church of Our Savior in Cocoa Beach is an integral part of this

Rockledge family’s lives.

“When we found out we were pregnant, they were immediately sending cards, gifts and care packages, especially when I went on hospital bed rest,” Sally Kalarovich said.

“We were the first triplet baptism that the church had. We took up the entire altar with three sets of godparents. The church would reserve a row for us every Sunday.”

The triplets — Travis, William and Teresa—are now 12 years old.

Travis is named after his great-great-great grandfather, S.F. Travis, the original owner of S.F. Travis and Company, a landmark hardware store in Cocoa Village.

“It’s been in our family for 135 years,” Sally Kalarovich said. “My kids

Sally has been active in theater since age 7 and was in the first production at the Cocoa Village Playhouse. She has been serving as director of the Stars of Tomorrow youth program for the past 16 years. The children all perform at the theater, and Aaron provides security.

“I’m one of those guys that fills the door frame,” he said jokingly.

At the triplets’ birthday parties, the family asks for donations for Ronald McDonald House, a charity organization that is near and dear to their hearts.

The triplets could not come home right away after they were born. The Ronald McDonald House provided a place for the couple to stay until they could.

Aside from the many “families” that they belong to, the children all have their own interests as well.

“I go outside and throw a baseball around and play video games with my two best friends online,” Travis Kalarovich said.

William is into computer coding. “I’ve made a few games on a website called Scratch, and it’s a lot of fun.

I’m going to be taking an advanced class next year at our middle school.”

A young entrepreneur at heart, Teresa would like to set up an Etsy shop. “I love to crochet stuffed animals.

I make headbands and cat toys, too.”

“Honestly, we would do it again in a heartbeat,” Sally Kalarovich said. “We have more fun than anyone should be allowed.”

“It was a zap from the Almighty,” Aaron Kalarovich said. “They (the triplets) make life better.

Line dancing class kicks up heels, lifts spirits

BY KATIE SIVCO Line dancing can be a fun way to stay sharp physically and mentally.

Larry Wright of Melbourne has taught line dancing for years.

He’s focused on teaching beginners and those who dance with two left feet.

While the line dance classes are open to adults of all ages, the majority of participants are seniors.

“It puts a smile on your face, a song in your heart and rhythm in your feet, and that’s what it’s all about,” Wright said.

Students said his classes are popular and easy to follow. At 10 a.m. each Wednesday, dozens of dancers hit the floor at the Viera Regional Community Center.

Wright starts his classes with the music off so people can fully focus on his words and steps.

“With your feet together, take your right foot and touch it to the side,” Wright said. “Repeat it, then do it with the left.”

Wright then leads the class through a series of steps, grapevines and quarter-turns. As Wright dances in front of the class, everyone on the ballroom floor copies his motions and moves together.

“It’s a fun way to get moving, and you get to learn to dance,” Wright said.

“It’s never too late to learn something new.”

“That’s a fun one right there,” Wright said. “Most of you remember that dance right up until you walk out the door, but it always comes back.”

The tone of Wright’s Wednesday line dancing classes is pure enjoyment.

People try their best and modify the moves if they can’t do them. They encourage one another.

“It’s physical exercise as well as mental exercise,” said 71-year-old Martha Wadsworth of Viera. “You have to be thinking the whole time.”

Wadsworth took up line dancing after retiring as an elementary school teacher.

She had tried different exercise classes, but they didn’t stick. Then she attended one of Wright’s classes.

“Everyone is very supportive — everyone,” Wadsworth said. “It’s not competitive. Everyone helps everyone.”

Sophomore takes lead role for Holy Trinity football

Holy Trinity's Dayday Farmer had 49 receptions as a freshman last season. That led the state and was No. 3 in the nation among ninth graders. Coach Nate Hooks Jr. has declared the rising sophomore is now the face of the Tigers' program.

A number of high-profile football recruits have come through Brevard County through the years.

Joining the ranks of previous five-star recruits such as Palm Bay’s Joe Cohen and Xavier Carter would certainly put Famer in rarified air. Holy Trinity coach Nate Hooks Jr. isn’t putting it past him.

“That’s an impressive goal for a ninth-grader to even be thinking along those lines,” Hooks said. “His quickness, his instincts and his playmaking ability are definitely going to give him a shot.”

Farmer, who was listed at 6 feet, 150 pounds last season, caught 49 passes for 700 yards and eight touchdowns in his first year playing varsity football. The 49 receptions ranked third in the nation and No. 1 in Florida among all freshmen.

Oh, yeah, it was his first year playing wide receiver.

“I feel like I did good, but I could have done better by catching the ball more,” he said. “I only dropped three passes out of 52 (thrown to me), so if I could have caught them three passes, I would have done better.”

Playing against older competition might be intimidating for some, but for Farmer, it was nothing new.

He started playing football in his backyard when he was 3 years old, always going against players who were older, bigger and didn’t cut him any slack. Everyone got the same treatment.

It was there in the backyard, Farmer believes, where he learned to run faster, stronger and cut harder. Those are just some of the skills he brings to playing wide receiver.

Last season, Dayday Farmer caught 49 passes for 700 yards and eight touchdowns in his first year playing varsity football.

“Nobody can guard me,” he said. “Nobody.”

A running back throughout his days playing youth football, Farmer said he always felt he was better suited as a receiver because of his hands. Now that he is playing outside, he gets to use his full arsenal.

He’s competitive going after 50-50 balls, catches the ball in tight windows and is even more dangerous getting the ball in space, where he can use his speed and athleticism.

And, he loves going deep.

All of that makes Farmer a tough matchup for opposing defenders.

“No matter what, you play up or you play back, I’m going to have the advantage,” he said. “So, whatever you do, it’s a mistake for you.”

As good as Farmer is now, he’s expected to get better.

“He’s always played up in youth league,” Hooks said. “As he gets older, for him to play the younger kids … like when he gets in 11th (grade) and he’s playing against ninth and 10th (graders), it’s going to be unfair.

“It’ll be like the cheat code in a video game.” V V

Viera’s Nixon cements legacy as first Hawk drafted into NFL

BY CARL KOTALA It was the second day of the NFL Draft and instead of sitting at home in anticipation of that night’s round of picks, former Viera High School football star Tre Nixon spent part of his afternoon talking to the current Hawks players.

Nixon’s message was simple. Just a few years ago, he was in their shoes, and you don’t need to be the fastest, strongest or biggest player to succeed.

“If you put your mind to it and put in the work, you can do what I’m doing,” Nixon said he told the Hawks.

“That’s the biggest thing I wanted to tell them, to motivate them. I was just a kid from Viera with a dream to go to college. God willing, look where I am now.”

The next day, May 1, Nixon got the call he had been waiting for his whole life. The New England Patriots had selected the UCF wide receiver with pick No. 242 in the seventh round. He’s the first former Viera player to ever be drafted by the NFL. So, dreams really can come true.

Meranda didn’t care in what round her son was drafted. After seeing him work so hard through youth football and his time at Viera, Ole Miss and then UCF, she just wanted to see him get that chance.

Kevin Mays, who was Nixon’s coach at Viera, said if there was one thing that has always stood out about Nixon, it’s how hard he works.

“When your best player is your hardest worker, you’ve got something kind of special with your team,” Mays said. “That’s the thing that impressed me about him. Even as a young guy, he had a work ethic that was special.”

Hayden Kingston, who was Nixon’s quarterback at Viera and later played with him at UCF, said what separates Nixon from other players is his speed and suddenness.

“Everybody talks about his straight-line speed, but I think his suddenness at the line of scrimmage and his suddenness getting in and out of his breaks on his routes is something that’s just different from a lot of other players out there,” Kingston said.

While seventh-round picks aren’t guaranteed to make an NFL team’s final 53man roster, Kingston has no doubt Nixon can make it.

“If he sticks to what got him here, he’ll have just as much success as he had in high school and college,” Kingston said. “He’ll do just fine.”

Nixon, who will become the first Viera player to have his jersey retired this fall, has created quite a legacy at his alma mater. He’s also become an inspiration.

“It shows me that somebody from Viera can make it to the NFL,” Viera wide receiver Donovan Giles said.

Draft day will always be one to remember for Nixon.

It was the day he realized a dream and embarked on an entirely new journey, one he will attack the way he always has — with hard work.

“It’s crazy because you work your whole life to get your name called, but really, it’s just begun,” Nixon said.

“It’s a true job. It’s a business now.

“Everything you dreamed about. It was an amazing feeling. But now, the real work starts.” V V

Viera junior publishes novel, works to teach others

What happens when teenager Brielle, or Bri to her close friends, meets her crush in the pop boy band Full Speed?

In teen author Kylie Himebaugh’s first novel, “Falling Fast,” Bri dates Jack and goes on a tour with his band members and their girlfriends.

In this romance novel, Bri begins to question their relationship after they both hit a few bumps in the road.

Their faith gets them over some of the hurdles, but Bri has trust issues.

“Things seem to go wrong over and over again. She asks herself if this is true love and is it worth it all,” said Kylie Himebaugh, a 17-year-old junior at Viera High School.

Will the romance last? Or will it fade away?

Kylie credits her ninthgrade English teacher, Rebecca Rayborn, for sparking her love of writing.

She had been assigned to write a two-page fairy tale.

Instead, she turned in six pages.

“She hadn’t written before.

She’s a gifted writer and has taken off like a rocket,” Rayborn said.

“I’m the kind of teacher that, if I let students fly and just be creative, they’ll find their niche. She found hers pretty early. I’m so proud of her, thrilled that I played a small part in it,” Rayborn said.

After that assignment, in 2019 Kylie began writing 20 pages a day for her novel.

book published. But, Kylie said her parents’ encouragement was a key. Her mom proofread the story. Her dad, Eric, an entrepreneur, gave Kylie tips throughout.

“Both my parents were my rock and my support the entire process. Without them, I wouldn’t have finished the book,” Kylie said.

Kylie, an Illinois native, says what she learned by writing her novel was “life isn’t easy, but you have to work hard for your dreams.”

“People don’t expect teenagers to write novels. Age is just a number. It doesn’t matter what age you are or where you came from.”

Kylie is working on a program to teach other teens how to write and publish their own book. She expects to have the program in place by midsummer. V V

Two local students earn $2,500 PEO STAR scholarships

SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE The PEO Sisterhood has awarded Scholastic Talent Accomplishment Recognition scholarships to two outstanding Central Brevard seniors.

Esther Francom, a graduating senior from Viera High School, and Isabella Weiner, a graduating senior from Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, each received scholarships for $2,500.

The STAR scholarships are awarded for exceptional high school senior girls who will be attending an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the United States or Canada.

“I was very blessed to meet with the ladies of our local PEO,” said Francom, who plans to study biochemistry at the

University of Central Florida.

“I honestly didn’t think I was going to get it, then I got an email from the PEO STAR organization.”

Francom and Weiner have participated in the Brevard County Science Fair for many years and continually gone on to the next level.

For this year's science fair, Francom built a filtration device for the Indian River Lagoon to collect microplastics. Weiner built a 3-D printer to work with soil from Mars.

Weiner, who will attend the University of Notre Dame to study chemical engineering, was pleased to receive the scholarship.

“It’s just a really great opportunity,” she said. “It will definitely help going to college.”

Weiner, a National Merit

Scholarship finalist, said she enjoyed meeting with the women of the local PEO. For the 2021-22 academic school year, the PEO Foundation awarded 900 scholarships for a total of $2.25 million. Since the STAR scholarship was established in 2009, PEO has awarded $13,085,000 to 5,548 recipients.

PEO is a sisterhood and philanthropic, educational organization founded in 1869. PEO’s guiding principle is to provide women with the opportunities of higher education. There are almost 6,000 chapters with more than 225,000 members.

BY WENDY SCHEURING Second-grade teacher Christina Rosean wanted to bring nature into the classroom. She was empathetic that her students could not attend field trips during the pandemic as they had in previous years.

So, she looked into Brevard Zoo’s Adopt an Animal program.

The class had several animals from which to choose. They selected the American eagle.

“The kids are excited about adopting an eagle,”

said Rosean, who has been teaching second grade at the school for the past three years. “They were disappointed that the eagle cannot live in the classroom.”

She also wanted to show appreciation for military veterans.

“Half of the class is from military families, either a brother, sister, parent or close cousin,” Rosean said.

“We wanted to represent and show how proud we are of the military for how they protect us every day. Military life is not an easy life.”

whose great-grandfather served in Vietnam, “picked the name Braveheart (for the eagle) for all of the brave people who have died in war to keep us safe.”

Rosean has been teaching her class about symbolism.

“In reading class, we talked about eagle habitats and spent a lot of time focusing on patriotism,” she said. “We talked about America and the people who keep us safe. We did a project on police, first responders and firefighters.”

Schools, libraries offer learning programs to counter ‘Summer Slide’

BY MIKE GAFFEY Brevard County schools and libraries are teaming up to stop the “Summer Slide.”

The phenomenon, in which students regress academically during summer vacation, may be worsened this year due to the pandemic, which disrupted the entire 2020-21 school year. “’Summer Slide’ is a big problem for students in all grade levels,” said Melanie Cundiff, a second-grade teacher at Viera Charter School. “Students work so hard during the school year, and then when they get out of school for the summer, they get comfortable not having to do any assignments. They don’t do anything to practice the skills they’ve learned, so they lose some of the knowledge they gained during the school year. It’s very sad to see.”

To help younger students stay sharp, Brevard Public Schools is offering summer camp through its Brevard After School program.

“Around the World in 40 Days” runs from June 7 through July 30 at eight elementary schools throughout the county.

Most teachers at Viera Charter School print summer packets for students to complete for optional work, Cundiff said. “Some teachers even tell the students that if they bring the packet back when the new school begins, they will earn a prize or award,” she said. “This is what I do and it motivates my students to keep practicing lessons over the summer.

I also give my students a monthly calendar with one goal or lesson to practice each day, mixing up reading, math and more, so they can check it off and keep track of their goals each day of summer vacation.”

Brevard County Public Libraries will offer numerous activities for children and teens as part of its Youth Summer Reading Program at all 17 county libraries, including reading lists fior children and teens, takehome story times, STEAM and craft projects, and virtual volunteering for teens. Videos featuring special guests, story book readings, and project instructions will be featured on the Brevard County Libraries’ YouTube channel on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this summer.

Parents can do their part as well by encouraging their children to read and do other activities such as writing in a journal or completing math problems during the summer, Cundiff said.

“Parents who motivate their students to work during the summer — and work with them — will be pleasantly surprised how it will help

their child be successful for the upcoming school year,” Cundiff said.

Masking becomes voluntary for Brevard schools after end of school year

BY ERNEST ARICO The Brevard County School Board voted in favor of making face masks voluntary after the end of this school year. The decision includes any school activities after June 3, such as summer school sessions.

The decision was made Friday, May 21 at a special board meeting.

The school board will continue to follow the current recommendations of both the Center for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics to keep masking policies in place for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year, which ends June 3.

Wine veranda coming to Viera’s Borrows West

If you are a wine connoisseur or a person who just loves a good glass of wine while relaxing, get ready for the new business scheduled to open next year at Viera’s Borrows West.

Richard Abbuscato, the chief executive officer of RNK Viera Inc., has purchased 1.3 acres across from the newly opened Chick-fil-A restaurant on Hennessey Place.

He plans to build and open Venezia Wine Veranda.

“The image we wanted to capture is that it’s not just a bar, but a showplace park where people can relax, enjoy the view and have a good glass of wine,” Abbuscato said.

Preliminary plans call for a 6,000-square-foot, twostory building. The first floor will house the kitchen and wine and gift shop, while the second floor will be seating

To get a glass of wine, Abbuscato explained that patrons will slide their debit or credit card into the dispenser system to get a 1.5,

3- or 5-ounce drink.

“Patrons will get a chance to do a lot of sampling from different countries, grades and prices,” he said.

Abbuscato also said the building will be very unique in that almost the entire second floor will be surrounded by glass, offering patrons a rooftop bar feeling.

“There will be a lot of

greenery, and patrons will be able to walk in the garden,” he said. “We want it to be visually attractive and appealing so people can relax and enjoy.”

Abbuscato said he was able to purchase the property and finance the building’s construction after selling his telemedicine stethoscope company, RNK Products, last

month. The company is in Wickham Commons at 8247 Devereux Drive, Suite 101, Viera.

“I think it’s going to be fun and profitable,” Abbuscato said. “All the demographics say it’s a great location, close to Interstate 95, and there is no competition at all from any of the surrounding counties.”

A new market with an international flair will be opening in Rockledge at Fiske Boulevard and Barton Boulevard — Thrifty Specialty Produce & Meats.

“There are tremendous amounts of international fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood,” said John Newton, the president of Newton Land Development Inc. and Newton Real Estate Group, LLC., which is managing the project. “You will get a lot of international things that you wouldn’t find in other stores. They have more choices of mangoes. And they have different types of mushrooms and cabbages that you might find in an Asian restaurant.”

Cuisinery, which opened just before Easter, is the go-to market for ingredients, frozen and gourmet quick-cook meals.

At 7640 N. Wickham Road, Suite 108, shoppers can find hundreds of frozen meals with a variety of appetizers, vegetables, entrees and desserts that can be ready in 20 minutes or less.

Chef Jeremy Miller, a 2007 graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., said the store’s selection of premade foods are as delicious as they are convenient, with no or very little prep necessary, like in a restaurant kitchen.

According to the company’s website, Cuisinery was launched in 1992 and is the result of the merger between the export operations of France Meditation USA Inc., which is a sales agency for French food and wine companies, and a French manufacturer of frozen entrees and appetizers. The company has expanded its product lines and geographical presence in the market, opening new sales nationwide.

In 1998, the company started exporting under the Gourmet USA brand with a sales office in Lyon, France.

Gourmet USA markets American-made goods to both the food service and retail industry in Europe.

Miller said the company decided to open a store in the Suntree-Viera area because they liked the region’s demographics and growth potential.

“We were looking for a store to service the Southern states, and this was the perfect location because of its close proximity to Orlando,” Miller said.

Miller said the company strives to find the highest quality ingredients, with no added preservatives, and stores its food in high-tech, energy-efficient freezers.

“We guarantee the quality of all our ingredients — and finished goods — because we work closely with major manufacturers and production facilities in Europe, establishing strong standards of quality,” he said.

Miller said shipping usually takes two days, and if a customer receives an item that is not frozen “you’re not paying for it.” He explained that sales are about 50 percent of people coming into the store and the other 50 percent from online sales.

“I have a great respect for fisheries and the solid need for good quality seafood in a fast, casual setting,” Broome said. “With the variety available, we offer bowls filled with healthier options, but you can indulge in fried fish as well. We have conch fritters and shrimp flatbread among appetizers.”

Natives of the western Mexican state of Jalisco, the owners have plenty of experience serving their traditional food in the U.S. Elizabeth and Rafael Rodriguez visited Melbourne and decided to open a restaurant. We Dance Academies opens second school in Viera

BY JENNIFER H. MONAGHAN We Dance Academies, a dance school for all ages and levels, including adults, is opening a second studio in Suntree/Viera on June 19.

Summer camps for ages 3 to 10 in ballet, ballroom, jazz, arts and crafts are scheduled.

All regular classes begin in August.

WDA’s purpose, as described by co-artistic director Ekaterina Yachmennikov, is to provide high quality dance training, as well as to expose dancers to a rich cultural environment.

“Dance training is discipline, challenge and being open for creativity,” she said.

Growing up in a military town in Russia near the Alaskan border where she began dance lessons at age 2, Ekaterina, a co-founder of WDA, dreamed of becoming a world champion in ballroom dancing. She won her first world championship at age 13.

on knowledge to the next generation.

“I have been going to get a massage for years and years because I stand up on my job as a surgical tech and look down all day,” Detra Gould said. “It keeps me out of the doctor’s office. I had gone to one guy forever and ever. I need deep tissue to get the knots out. David has that touch and gets that deep massage. He is really good, backs off if it is too much and talks all the way through it.”

Debbie Etherton said she chose Elements because it is new and fresh.

“I like their philosophy that it is not about the add-ons,” she said. “It is about helping the person get better, and it is more about healing than just massages. I have seen two people, and I am not a deep-tissue gal. So, they put me with another massage therapist with a lighter touch, and I am seeing them weekly, more to my liking. Therapists check in on you and are very personable, having this mindset that you come out of it better than you went in.

resley Thorstensen is a second grader at Quest Elementary School who lives in Viera.

She loves to swim in her pool and at Rockledge High School for Rockets Swimming. One Saturday, she went to Hello Again

Books in Cocoa Village to meet up with her friends Annabelle and Isla.

“We’re best friends.

And we always meet at the bookstore,” Presley said.

Presley’s favorite subject in school was art because she loves

painting. Now that she’s out of school, Presley is excited about “possibly” going to Hawaii for the summer with her family.

She also likes going to the Brevard Zoo and helping her dad water the plants in their butterfly garden.

Presley said her

favorite animals at the zoo are the spider monkeys since they can climb really high.

“I’ve always wanted to be a YouTuber. I love recording my friends and getting to know them more,” Presley said about being a kid reporter.

Hurricane season arrival calls for preparedness plan It might be a little difficult for some to consider preparations for the hurricane season, which officially began June 1, particularly coming after an unusual year with the pandemic.

Still, it’s clear that preparedness efforts are essential, especially given the possibility of above-average activity during the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.

Brevard County Emergency Management officials detailed steps that residents should take with their preparedness efforts: 1. Know your risks.

2. Build a kit.

Ensure that you have what you need to keep yourself and your family safe.

3. Have a plan.

Reconsider your plans regarding where you will go and what you will do if a storm approaches.

and register for emailed press releases at sites such as sites. brevardcounty.us/PIRA/ PIRA. Every year, Emergency Management informs residents through messaging and news releases that they should know the risks, be prepared, make a kit and stay informed.

Residents are advised to make sure they have all the supplies they might need such as batteries for flashlights, non-perishable food and water. They also should have sheltering and evacuation plans in place.

In the event a hurricane does threaten the area,

shelters will be open in Brevard County.

Most residents of Viera and Suntree probably won’t need to utilize the shelters. In the Viera/Suntree area, for the most part, homes are well-built.

Evacuation orders and shelter recommendations mainly apply to the beachside and island communities and mobile home residents.

More pertinent information can be found at the Federal Emergency Management Association’s website: ready.gov.

The lowly plastic bottle cap is unwanted even by recycling facilities, which rarely use them. However, thanks in part to the Cape Canaveral Pen Women, this Rodney Dangerfield of plastic may earn welldeserved respect as a hero in saving the Indian River Lagoon.

Intrigued by a news story on Florida Institute of Technology’s research on the subject, Pen Women past-president Marion Coste floated the idea to collect caps for the Florida Tech project, which places mesh bags filled with these plastic castoffs throughout the lagoon. The caps serve to convert and remove excess nitrogen to prevent harmful algal blooms. The portable bags can be moved as needed to do their cleaning job in different areas of the lagoon.

The Pen Women have embraced their Caps for a Cause project with enthusiasm, collecting caps

wherever they may be and in whatever numbers are available. One Senior Place, where the Pen Women often host author talks, provided a huge amount.

“It’s a win-win for everyone and makes us feel we are making an impact,” current president Donna Puglisi said.

While plastic is usually considered a no-no in waterways because of the possible leaching of harmful chemicals, bottle caps are not privy to those chemicals.

However, if you are thinking of helping out by tossing a couple of caps into the river, don’t. For one thing, the researchers at Florida Tech know where the caps can work best, primarily in stormwater baffle boxes that capture debris. The caps also need to be bagged to keep them from being ingested by fish or birds.

Dr. Austin Fox, assistant professor in ocean engineering and marine sciences, and graduate student Abbey Gering developed the concept, based on bioballs used in aquarium systems. The project caps the university’s multiprong effort to improve the health of the lagoon and has implications that could impact coastal waters around the world.

“We are the ripples in a pond, making waves that will eventually give us our clear blue waters once again,” Puglisi said.

Donation boxes for clean plastic bottle caps can be found at the Brevard Zoo, the Sun Shoppe Café in Melbourne and The Tiny Turtle in Cocoa Beach.

Plastics recycling extends to dental-care supplies Since 1950, the world has produced more than 8.3 billion tons of plastic. About 60 percent of that plastic has ended up in either a landfill or the natural environment – in our streets, in our waters.

“Today, we produce 300 million tonnes of plastic waste every year,” according to the U.N. Environment Programme. “That’s nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in 2018, landfills received 27 million tons of plastic. The total amount of plastics combusted was 5.6 million tons. Only about 3.1 million tons was recycled.

That represents about 9 percent of plastic waste generated in the U.S.

A lot of that plastic is represented by singleuse products, like plastic drinking bottles and bags.

But other short-lived items integral to our daily lives contribute to that total. Let’s take plastic toothbrushes, for example.

Based on the recommendation from the American Dental Association, toothbrushes should be replaced about every three to four months or more often if the bristles become matted or frayed.

Every year, an estimated 1.2 billion toothbrushes are thrown away in the U.S. alone, producing about 26,250 tons of plastic waste, equivalent to a little less than 100,000 64-gallon carts.

The best solution to plastic waste, as UNEP and other organizations point out, would be to slow the flow of plastic at its source, but we also need to improve the way we manage plastic waste. One of those ways is to increase the amount of waste that gets recycled.

In the case of toothbrushes, Recycle Brevard offers an alternative through TerraCycle. You can drop off toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes and dental floss containers at Recycle Brevard or visit

RecyceBrevard.org to find a dropoff location near you.

With a program called Recycleware, Recycle Brevard is looking for dental offices and other sites willing to distribute postcards of the program or become a dropoff location.

Water quality: It’s complicated

Wow! The manatees are starving to death because I use fertilizer? How can that be?

Well, it’s complicated.

The nutrients in the fertilizer (and many other sources including septic tanks and leaking sewage lines) flow into the lagoon, where they feed algae growth. The algae blooms block the sun so the seagrass dies. Seagrass is the manatees’ main food, so they starve. Sad. To fix it means cleaning up the water so the algae stops and the seagrass returns.

South Florida has lots of people, and they all poop. The sludge from its treatment needs to be put somewhere. As these biosolids increased locally, they helped cause algal blooms in Lake Okeechobee. So, the Legislature outlawed

dumping in South Florida, and we got it here.

The resulting phosphorus started causing blooms in Blue Cypress Lake and Lake Washington, the source of our drinking water. The Brevard County Commission established a temporary ban in 2019, but biosolids remain a problem.

The Indian River Lagoon is an estuary, not a river, so it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, but not very quickly.

With no ocean connection from the north to the Sebastian Inlet, 80 miles south, the flow travel time is more than a year. It’s not

just a long way, there are numerous causeways that retard the flow and trap the nutrients.

Some people advocate creating a connection to the ocean to let the tide help move the water. Again, it’s complicated. Doing this would likely make the estuary saltier and change the ecology. Even getting and permitting land for the cut would be a huge challenge.

It would be great if these issues were simple. They’re not, but we are fortunate to have our sciencebased Save Our Indian River Lagoon Plan that is working to solve these complex problems. Plastic seems cheap to buy, but when we approach its cost in a holistic way, we realize that plastic is a very expensive material. From production to disposal, the impact on the environment is tremendous. Any small step we can take to reduce plastic waste brings us closer to eliminating plastic from the environment, so why not start by recycling your toothbrushes?

P.S: A note on my previous article, when removing Mexican petunia from your garden, place them in the garbage, not in your yard waste bin.
