It helped him win the STEM Mentor of the Year Award Feb. 26 at the Holiday Inn Melbourne-Viera Conference Center during the National Engineers Week Awards Banquet, presented by Space Coast Women In Defense. It didn’t take a rocket scientist, but it definitely helped. Morgan transferred to Brevard in 1964 to take charge of all electrical hardware, components and batteries for the Saturn rockets that lifted men to the moon. His name is among the 450 in the time capsule that’s been on the moon since Apollo 15 landed on the moon in 1971. He continued on to oversee the integrated logistics system for the International Space Center until his retirement. Since then, he’s worked to develop future space and defense professionals by

Stars in the sky heal scars inside by linda wiggins
There is at times no sound, except for the swoosh of paint slathering onto the wall in careful, measured strokes. And with each swoosh, an invisible injury melts away. Other times there is talking, lots of talking, sometimes through tears, a sharing of happenstance and then hope of brighter times to come. This is art therapy with Whitney Hyatt, MS, RMHCI, a counselor who coaxes out cares from the young clients ages 9 to 17 who live at the Devereux school in Viera. They are subjects of abuse, and without successful intervention, are destined to continue a cycle of abuse without the help of someone like Hyatt. The group recently completed its fifth mural on the campus, located northwest of Wickham and Murrell roads, and the first in its new Wellness, Learning and Activity Center. The recreation of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” was a perfect choice in many ways, adorning the wall of the Art Therapy room. “Our therapeutic goals for these art therapy groups were to increase positive interactions with peers, relieve feelings of anger and depression, and increase feelings of calm and relaxation,” Hyatt said. “I wanted to choose a subject that would make the clients feel empowered, like they could be just as good as any famous artist. The ‘Starry Night’ was the perfect choice because of the impressionistic style.
SPRING TRAINING Continued from page 1 contractor works two hours before a home game begins and an hour afterward, and gets to watch the game. “I don’t mind talking to people,” he said. “That’s why the greeter job out in front is good for me because I really like it. And now I’m getting so that I see people from last year and say, ‘Oh yeah, I remember you.’ ” Gleckel, father to son Gerry Jr. and daughter Laura, first became interested in landing one of the coveted stadium jobs during a visit to see his Air Force deputy group commander son, then assigned to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Twenty-five Devereux clients ages 9 to 17 collaborated on this mural recreation of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” during a three-week period. The clients felt that there was no way they could ‘mess up’ due to the many layers of lines and colors.” Art therapy is among a number of alternative treatment approaches especially helpful in resolving past abuse issues due to its gentle nature and individual pace. It is also a safe way for clients to begin to communicate their feelings and overcome internal barriers to
“He said, ‘You ought to get a job here as an usher ― you’ve got enough gray hair,' ” Gleckel quoted his son, now a lieutenant colonel stationed in the Washington, D.C. area. During a visit to Nationals Park in the nation’s capital, Gleckel met with a team representative, who contacted Viera officials, which led to his hiring. Gleckel is one of about 60 people who work for Dave McConnell, director of game day operations for Spring Training since 2001. McConnell oversees ushers, ticket takers and bag checkers, but not concessions or souvenir shop workers. Working at the stadium has enabled Gleckel to strike

up friendships with some Nationals players. Gleckel even took a few players to Kennedy Space Center to watch launches, with passes obtained by his son. “That was fun,” Gleckel said. “In spite of the fact that they’re living the dream of being big league baseball players, seeing a launch is something they’ve never done before. And a nighttime lunch is a pretty special thing.” Gleckel has high hopes for Washington this season. The defending National League East Division champions bolstered an already potent pitching staff by signing former Detroit Tigers righthander Max Scherzer in the offseason.

“They’ve clearly got one of the best pitching staffs in Major League Baseball,” Gleckel said. “You never know what’s going to happen during the year ― who’s going to get injured, who’s going to have a down year — but they’ve got a pretty darn good team and I think their chances are very good.” Gleckel is unsure whether he’ll follow the Nationals to West Palm Beach if and when the team moves to a new stadium. “That’s a tough, tough decision,” he said. “My wife likes to play golf and she’s pretty dug in up here with friends during the past four years and she really likes it here. the Viera-Rockledge area is a lot smaller with less traffic. There are some things you have to think about when you make those hard decisions.” Despite the impending move, Gleckel remains a Nationals fan and a co-owner of season tickets. He attends about 15 regular-season games a year. “Mark Lerner and the folks who own the team, and Mike Rizzo, the general manager, are really nice people, and they know what they’re doing in terms of organizing the team and keeping it going,” he said. “They’re very fan-oriented. Paint Nite launches Brevard art classes BY KATIE PARSONS
Locals who are looking for a creative way to spend a night out can enjoy food, drinks and an art lesson through newly-launched local franchise Paint Nite. A popular girls night out or date event, Paint Nite guides its participants through a two-hour art lesson that yields a painting by the end. The concept for Paint Nite originated in the Boston area in 2012 and it has since spread quickly across the country. Ashlee Merchant started hosting Paint Nite events about a year ago in the Los Angeles area and says she had trouble keeping up with its popularity.
“Paint Nite took over my life,” she said. When her husband took an aerospace-related job in Brevard County, Merchant decided she would bring the concept to the Space Coast. Right now, she has three restaurants signed on for events: River Rocks in Rockledge, Mimi’s Café in Viera and Rum Island Grill in Indian Harbour Beach. Paint Nite also offers corporate and private party options. Since alcohol is usually part of the Paint Nite experience, participants must be 21 years old to sign up and attend. All food and drinks are purchased separately from the establishment hosting the event, though.
Hosted by Duran Golf Club
“I always tell people that Paint Nite is more of a party and less of a lesson,” Merchant said. “Yes, you will learn something but people should not feel intimidated. Just come out and have a great time.” Each event offers a different painting lesson in popular categories like sunsets, trees and flowers. Everyone who takes the class is painting the same thing. Merchant, who holds a degree in art, will host most of the events, though as it grows, she will likely have help from other artists. Participants pay ahead online for the classes and then bring the confirmation information to the event. For $45, participants receive the lesson, all their supplies and their very own painting to take home at the end of the twohour session. Food and drinks at the restaurant or bar are not included in the price. Merchant is offering a limited time discount code for $20 off the price by going to PaintNite.com and

Viera girls win state soccer championship
By Carl Kotala
Only one Brevard County soccer team won a state championship this season — and it’s your Viera Hawks. After a pair of dramatic finishes in the regional semifinals and finals, coach Courtney Lundy’s team actually made it look easy in the Class 4A girls soccer Final Four. Viera defeated Navarre 2-0 in the state semifinals, then dominated Pembroke Pines Charter 4-0 in the championship game at Eastern Florida State College. It’s the first state championship the girls soccer team has won, and it was just the third team title in Viera High School history. And if there was ever a state title run that showcased a team’s talent, teamwork, determination and genuine appreciation of each other, this was it. “This team is different than any other team I’ve been on,” senior forward Hope Leonard said after the title game. “We’re so close. Everybody brings something different to the table. We’re all so different, but it just seems to mesh. You don’t get that often. “Winning with this team means a lot to me, personally.” The road to the state title included three wins against archrival Melbourne, a team the Hawks had only beaten once prior to this season. The last victory came in the regional semifinals, where the game was decided by penalty kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Lau came up big in that game, making a save on Melbourne’s last attempt despite playing on an injured knee. A few nights later, the Hawks were on the road

The Mitchell game was proof that whenever the Hawks needed a big play, during the regular or postseason, there were a number of players who came up big. Leonard scored six goals in five state tournament games, including the gamewinner against Mitchell. Hollyn Knight had four goals. Brookelyn Walsh had three, including the only goal for Viera in the regional semifinal against Melbourne. Tori Clark scored twice and put the Hawks on the board against Pembroke Pines Charter with a goal in the first two minutes. Nicki Fisher had three assists against Mitchell and also scored in the state title game. Kassidy Mills scored the first goal against Navarre.

Jordan Walsh had a pair of goals. The defense, led by Sarah Sanford, Shannon Gosule, Fisher, Morgan Pulliam and Lau, combined for 17 shutouts on the year, including both the semifinal and championship games. Then there were players like Alyssa Whisel, Mollie Roe, Julia Ramsey, Natalie Bertran, Cori Fisher, Hannah Dearing, Sarah Kelliher, Alexandra Capalbo, Anna Martin, Emily Bodi and Emily Ramsey who all contributed as well. It was a historic way to end a season, and for the seniors, a great way to close out their high school careers. “It’s sad to think that I’m not going to play with them again, because I love them so much,” Leonard said. “But if there’s any way to go out, it’s this way.” VV

Tigers on verge of breakthrough season By Carl Kotala
Coach Tracy Biggs likes to say he has some “experienced, young guys” on his Holy Trinity baseball roster. And that could pay off big for the Tigers not only this season, but down the road. “A lot of people say we’re young, but I think our talent makes up for it,” sophomore Tony Jenkins said. “We’re pretty fast and we hit the ball.” Jenkins, who will play center field, shortstop and also pitch for the Tigers, has been playing varsity Math Help

baseball since the seventh grade. So has sophomore Jacquel Perry, who will play first base and pitch. The Tigers also have a couple of freshmen who performed well as eighth graders last season in leadoff hitter/second baseman R.J. Diaz and outfielder/pitcher Jordan Caplan. Adding to an already talented mix will be transfer Matt Austin, returner Ryan Bastein, freshman Jack Szachacz and sophomore Harvey Jenkins, who will be the team’s No. 1 pitcher. “I would say we’re one

of the best, young talented teams in the county this year,” Biggs said. “… I think with our speed and our knowledge of the ballgame, we’re going to be a highly competitive team. The fact that some of our young guys have so much varsity experience is really going to help us. “There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re going to be able to contend for the district championship this year.” Naturally, pitching and defense will be the key to whether the Tigers will be able to overcome a district that includes Astronaut, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach and Space Coast. But they certainly appear to have the makeup to be a serious contender this season. Biggs, who served as the Tigers head coach from

Signing day brings big reward for Holy Trinity seniors By Carl Kotala
A highly decorated group of Holy Trinity athletes made their college commitments last month. Daniel Welch (football, Florida Tech), J’V’on Butler (football, Georgetown) and Matt Scott (lacrosse, Christopher Newport University) all took the stage and signed their national letters of intent. They were joined by Keoni Wallington (basketball, Eastern Florida State College) who will sign his official letter in April. “It was emotional, just seeing your dreams come true and really knowing that your hard work has paid off,” Scott said. “That was the biggest thing.” Scott, who plays goalie, is a member of the U-19 Florida National Team and was also selected to the Stars and Stripes team that played in the inaugural High School Lacrosse Challenge Cup and defeated a team from Canada last September. He chose CNU, a Division III school, because of its location (Newport News, Va.) and because of his connection with the coaching staff.
Welch had a similar story in that he likes the fact that Florida Tech is close by, and because he was impressed

National Signing Day brought good news for Viera High senior football players Devin Nixon, left, and Ryley Howe. By Carl Kotala
Viera High football players Devin Nixon and Ryley Howe became the 15th and 16th athletes from the school to sign college scholarships last month. And there could be plenty more in the future. Nixon, a speedy wide receiver, signed with Western Kentucky University. Howe, a defensive end, signed with the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. “It was a feeling of accomplishment,” said Nixon, who ran a 4.45 in the 40-yard dash at the Chicago Nike Football SPARQ Combine last April. With 15 offers to consider, Nixon said the other schools
he seriously considered were Navy, FIU and UCF. Western Kentucky was the best fit for a number of reasons. “I’m real close with their receiving coach, JaMarcus Shephard, and their offense … their quarterback (Brandon Doughty) is the No. 1 passer in the nation, they spread it out and they throw the ball,” Nixon said. “That’s perfect for me as a receiver.” Howe, meanwhile, said he also considered the Merchant Marine Academy, a football rival of the Coast Guard. In the end, though, he believes he made the right decision and liked the fact that there is a chance he

could get early playing time if he works hard enough. “Everything about it really appeals to me,” Howe said. “The fact that it’s the Coast Guard … I’m kind of biased, obviously, but I think it’s the most respectable military service.” Hawks head coach Kevin Mays hopes this is just the beginning for the program — which won a district championship last season — in being able to have players sign college scholarships. “As a coach, you’re always excited to see these guys move on to the next level and achieve their dreams,” Mays said. “Next year’s class, hopefully it will grow and we’ll keep developing that kind of talent.” VV

Holy Trinity girls lacrosse team showing progress The Holy Trinity girls lacrosse program is becoming not only more experienced in its third season, but more popular. “It’s nice to see more girls come out. … I hope it keeps getting bigger each season,” senior McKenna Ville said. Ville is a tri-captain along with senior Emma Rylander and junior Danielle Thomas. Other seniors include Krystina Glasner, Alyssa Nelson, Meredith Haley and Elaina Valencia. Naturally, they would like to go out with a big season. “I’d love to and I think we can,” Ville said. “We just need more work and more practice and we’ll get there for sure.”
Tigers optimistic about boys lacrosse season
When it comes to the Holy Trinity boys lacrosse team, there is no question things are looking up. “To be honest, our outlook’s better than last year,” goalie Matt Scott said. Stressing teamwork, the Tigers will be led by Scott, attackmen Tony Morelli and
Josh Moisand; midfielders Justin Ganiban and Sean Taylor; and defenders Hunter Altman and Ricky Berthiaume. Coach Mike Leary said it’s a cohesive unit. “Unlike in past years where we had a standout player, this really is a team” he said. “It’s going to be a team effort, which I think is a plus over years past.”
Hawks aim to repeat as district champions
The defending district champions are ready to make a run at another title. The Viera High boys lacrosse team faces tough competition, but new coach Brian Gabak should have the Hawks in the thick of the race. Viera is led by its attackmen, seniors Connor Neff (captain) and Ty Wallace (captain) along with juniors Lane Miller and Rob Rider, who moved here from Long Island. Junior Ryan Morgan is strong in goal. The defense is led by senior Austin Crawford (captain), sophomore Jaxon Lenk and senior Cameron Smithwick. The face-off midfielders include senior Jonathan Cassario, Tyler Holland and Casey Michel (captain). VV

Inclusion of arts to tech focus puts innovation full STEAM ahead By Linda Wiggins
and tape — dubbed “taper” mache — and stuffed them with colored paper to create their mummified likeness. “Art adds ingenuity and creativity to science, technology, engineering and math — the whole picture of innovation. It also incorporates both sides of the brain. It can inspire nonscience/math type kids,” said Jana Gabrielski, Suntree teacher and coordinator of science-related events and programs. According to stemtosteam. org, STEAM is a movement championed by the Rhode Island School of Design and widely adopted by institutions, corporations and individuals. “In this climate of economic uncertainty, America is once again turning to innovation as the way to ensure a prosperous future,” the website states. “Yet innovation remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math — the STEM subjects. Art + Design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the last century. We need
When Suntree Elementary School added Art to its fifth annual Science, Technology, Engineering and Math night Feb. 6, it did more than make more fun for more students, and a more fun acronym, turning STEM to STEAM. It responded to a U.S. economic development push to turn workers into creators. Teachers, older students acting as volunteers, parents and community business partners came together to oversee hands-on stations that offer children bugs to hold, simple experiments, living things under a microscope, bones, dirt, gross and gooey things, bright, shiny and colorful things. Staff from Orlando Science Museum also provided displays and encouragement, volunteers from Lockheed Martin helped students shoot off rockets they’d created, the Merritt Island Robotics team provided interaction with their crafted robot and Mathnasium provided fun with numbers. New this year, students in the art room offered up their limbs to be wrapped in plastic

Fuel Up to Play 60 program sprints off to fast start at Williams Elementary By Carl Kotala
When Ralph Williams Elementary Physical Education teacher Mike Newman tried to talk to his students about the benefits of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, he didn’t need to look hard to find the perfect motivation tool. “I asked them if they had all seen the Super Bowl and they said, ‘Oh yeah,’ ” Newman recalled. “I said, ‘Did you see the kid who brought out the ball? He was actually the kid who won the Fuel Up to Play 60 (contest).’ “He’s from (Orlando) Florida, so that gave my kids a little extra incentive.” The Fuel Up to Play 60 program was brought to Ralph Williams through a district grant from the National Dairy Council, the Florida Dairy Council and the National Football League. Children create their own user name and log in their healthy eating and activity habits. Points are awarded and prizes given for reaching certain point levels. Newman said at least 150 students signed up in the classroom to take part in Fuel Up to Play 60, while others did it at home.

The program is being incorporated into the Morning Mile activity Newman was already running. From 7:30 to 7:50 a.m., students get a Grab and Go breakfast meal at the cafeteria and head for the track. “Last year, we had a couple of kids get over 100 miles and this year, the same kids are well on their way (to doing it again),” Newman said. Though the Fuel Up to Play 60 program just started at Ralph Williams, Newman said it’s been quite successful so far. “I have kids coming in all

the time telling me when they logged in,” he said. “It’s kind of cool to hear what they’re doing.” Many people have seen the program featured in commercials with NFL players. So what are the odds of an NFL player coming to Ralph Williams? “It’s based on points, so the more times you log in and do your stuff, you become an ambassador and basically spread the word,” Newman said. “The more points you get, the more chances you have to have that happen." Suntree charity tops $100K for fetal surgery advancement By Linda Wiggins
The Brianna Marie Foundation recently surpassed its $100,000 milestone for funds raised for fetal surgery advancements. A 5K Run/ Walk and family fun day with silent auction is planned for Saturday, March 14 at Wickham Park on Parkway Drive, with registration starting at 6:30 a.m. for the 8 a.m. run, followed by a 9:15 a.m. free kids’ run. Aran and Patrick Hissam of Suntree lost their daughter to a fetal defect, and they are determined that her 15-hour life may make a difference in the lives of future babies. They established the foundation in their daughter’s name in September 2012 to raise awareness and funding to advance the field of fetal medicine, life-saving surgeries performed on babies prior to birth. The second annual Brianna Marie Foundation 5K Run last year attracted 379 registered participants and close to 600 people attended festivities, including more than 60 volunteers. “There is very little funding in this field; yet fetal surgeons are able to perform miracles daily by operating on organs a fraction of the size of a pea,” Aran Hissam said. Brianna Marie was diagnosed with Fetal Hydrops, in which excess

Dr. Ruben Quintero of Jackson Fetal Therapy Institute in Miami, which serves Brevard families, operated on Brianna Marie to insert shunts in her lungs credited for bringing her to term. He is conducting research and design on advanced shunts to help future babies affected by Brianna Marie’s condition. “Our hope is that with what we are doing, we

Pilates Center of Viera offers a gentler form of exercise
By Rosemary H. Lynn
When Amy Lee Peters of Melbourne opened Pilates Center of Viera, she knew she was filling a need for both the younger and older generations when it came to exercise. “So many people want to work exercise into their routine,” Peters said. “But the thought of going to a busy fitness center where intimidating machines and weight training reign can keep people from making that decision.” Peters, who began her career in fitness as a dancer, is a master certified Pilates Instructor. With 15 years in Pilates training, her goal is to offer a fun, inspirational atmosphere as clients get a positive, core-building workout that is gentle and fun to do. She has been at her present Viera address for 11/2 years. For older adults, Pilates is the perfect workout, according to Peters.
“It focuses on the core muscles that support the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Most are done in a sitting or reclining position and are low impact, causing less stress with the same benefit as more difficult exercises.” Exercising on a “Reformer” — a resistance-based machine connected to a sliding padded carriage — is perfect because it is relatively light resistance. For some people, even the lightest weight on the rack can be too much to handle. Pilates exercises can be modified for each individual. It helps people with balance issues, which is important as they age. Posture improvement and stability are very important as people age. Many of the people in Peters’ studio are well into their 60s and are in better shape than a lot of 20 year olds. Types of Pilates include mat classes, TRX/RIP/
Balle-X, Pound-Fit (a fun, dance type of Pilates) and mommy and baby classes. Peters is happy to explain and demonstrate all of the Pilates routines and design a routine perfect for each individual. In March, a Pound and Pour class will be offered. Three Pound classes followed by a celebration with wine will be offered. Family’s centennial marriage anniversary is marked by the numbers By Linda Wiggins
Eddie Hudak of Suntree remembers the toe tapping. Growing up the youngest of 15 children — the closest in age to him five sisters — had its challenges. Hudak shared remembrances with family members as he and three sisters who live nearby celebrated Feb. 8 what would have been the 100th wedding anniversary of their parents, Andrew and Dorothy Hudak. They mark the date each year. “The wait for the bathroom was a long one,” Hudak recounted. “And heaven forbid I should leave the toilet seat up. The odds were 6 to 2 against my dad and me for leaving it down.” The outnumbering was even more drastic taking the older siblings into account: 10 girls and five boys along a span of 21 years. Born of Slovak parents who made it to U.S. shores just before his birth, Andrew started his own grocery story and cut fine meats before the dawn of chain grocers. Eddie Hudak again was outnumbered at the WilkesBarre, Pa. family store. “As the baby brother of five older sisters in the house and working at the store, I had to do all the heavy lifting,” he said. The big brood produced more than its share of members of the cloth, numbering a priest and two nuns among them. “That still left 12 of us to get married and have children,” Hudak said, including one sister with nine children. A 1965 newspaper article marking the Hudaks’ Golden Anniversary listed 15 children, 37 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Today, the progeny numbers well into the triple digits. Hudak retired as a Wall Street bond salesman 20 years ago and moved with his wife, Dorothy, to the area 20 years ago into a new home built in the Fieldstone neighborhood. They both

Community Church in Viera. Just one last complaint and the rest of his childhood was all gravy, Hudak promised. “As I got into my teenage years, they’d call me Eddie the son of the butcher. That didn’t sound very nice if you didn’t know my dad was the town grocer.” VV

Anjanette Wicks was in New Orleans this February not just for the pleasure of attending Mardi Gras, but also to gather up the spicy ingredients she will need for Cayenne’s Cajun and Creole Festival, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 14, at Blinds of All Kinds and JR Rib Shack, 3450 U.S. Hwy. 1 in Rockledge. Cayenne’s Seafood is Wicks’ Louisiana-style catering business, and the festival offers the perfect opportunity to sample the tasty delicacies. Wicks has quite the menu in store, and it is crawfish intensive. Start with the spicy boiled crawfish that is her signature dish and follow it with crawfish pies and crawfish and grits. Continue with jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, grilled gator sausage, jerk chicken, ribs and pulled pork and blackened seafood salad. Finish the meal with — what else — that iconic New Orleans sweet, beignets. “The festival gives me the opportunity to bring the true authentic flavor of Louisiana to Brevard,” Wicks said. Wicks has the perfect pedigree for the job. Born and raised just outside of New Orleans, Wicks still holds the Big Easy close to her heart. “My family still lives in the same house where I grew up,” said the Viera resident.
As a military wife, Wicks had plenty of opportunity to travel the world, and everywhere she went, she searched for the tastes of home. When she couldn’t find dishes that would suit her Louisiana palate, she decided to make them and thus was born Cayenne’s Seafood, named after Wicks’ favorite pepper. “It’s really great, but you’ve got to know how to use it,” she said. This year, Wicks has partnered with JR Rib Shack to add an extra dimension of taste to the festival. The event also includes a gumbo cook-off, children’s activities, vendors and educational demonstrations. It wouldn’t be a true Louisiana experience with music, so Wicks will provide Cajun, Zydeco, jazz and blues. For those eager to hone their culinary skills, Wicks even has a cooking lesson in store. “I will be teaching people how to make gumbo,” she said. For an authentic Cajun experience, guests can opt to order the $80 party table, which will feed six to eight people and includes a tableful of crawfish and fixings, plus Mardi Gras beads, pictures and a chance to win a gift basket of Cajun products. “This is all about letting the good times roll,” said Wicks. For more information on Cayenne’s Cajun and Creole Festival, call 321-591-3414. VV

Email blasts send pet-finding posse to the rescue
By Linda Wiggins
When Bailey the pug hot-footed it out an open gate last month, the canine adventure set off a blaze of activity among Suntree homeowners. Rounding up a pet-finding posse is one of the things community relations manager Kaye McKinney gets to do courtesy of today’s technology.
She sent out an email blast to all 4,000-plus Suntree Master Homeowners Association resident recipients along with perhaps the most adorable photo of all lost pets in recent memory, the rotund pug emerging from a clothes dryer in a fun family photo supplied by the heartbroken family. “I was devastated,” said Tara Carillo, Bailey’s

“mommy” who adopted the pet five years ago as a companion for an older pug, Guinness. Carillo’s husband, Rick, and young children Isabel and Ethan were also distraught. “My pugs are not outdoor animals, so I didn’t think she would come back after the first night. I felt like I had truly lost my best friend.” McKinney’s network sprang into action. In
addition to the requisite emails for upcoming committee and HOA meetings, she sends out news blasts for lost pets, found pets, and even pets whose elderly owners must move to assisted living and need adopting by other residents. The emails always contain just the right images for the message at hand. Bailey’s blast included a cartoon dog

looking just about as forlorn as the lost pug, a look that is actually a trademark of the bug-eyed breed. “Kaye’s network was a miracle. All of our neighbors came out to help us look for Bailey and I had people I thought didn’t even know me knocking on my door, asking us how they could help,” Carillo said. “It was wonderful.” Eye witnesses reported Bailey heading to the opposite end of the neighborhood, so the family grabbed a bag of treats, called her name, and put a harnessed-up Guinness on the trail. Forty hours after she went missing, one of the children spotted Bailey in the area she was last reported, covered in mud and hungry for a snack. A flea and tick bath came next. “I don’t think I put her down or let her out of my sight for two days! I held her constantly and kept kissing her,” Carillo said. “I also immediately went out and bought her a collar and put her tags back on her, in case this ever happens again.” For McKinney, it’s all in a day’s work. “Pets are a very important part of our lives, whether it be a young family whose pet is a focal point, or a companion for a widowed senior,” McKinney said. “Helping each other when it comes to our furry family members is simply a characteristic of the closeknit community we enjoy.” VV vieravoice.com
Popular Spring Praise Fest grows Viera roots By Linda Wiggins
Regarded as the father of contemporary Christian rock music, Randall Evan “Randy” Stonehill will headline the ninth annual Spring Praise Fest at Cocoa Village’s Riverfront Park and Amphitheater from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 21. The California-based musician is best known for folk rock in the style of James Taylor, but also has albums of new wave, pop, pop rock, roots rock and children’s music. Joining the national star is “the Florida Chalk Guy” Jason Anthony, who brings to life a full-size original artwork with handfuls of colorful powdered chalk in front of the crowd and then sets it to a multimedia show and spiritual experience. “Spring Praise Fest is much more fun for families and people of all generations and demographics than getting into the car and making your way to Orlando,” said SPF spokeswoman Lorena Dugan, who like many event volunteers attends Calvary Chapel Melbourne in Viera. “It is far less expensive too. You can’t beat free. The theme parks don’t allow you to come and go as you like, they do not have the Indian River Lagoon as a backdrop and they don’t have the ambience of Historic Cocoa Village.”

Yale’s Spizzwinks(?) mix harmonies with humor BY MIKE GAFFEY
The group that made a cappella singing cool before “Pitch Perfect” came along loves to perform where it’s warm. The Yale Spizzwinks(?) of Yale University, America’s first and oldest underclassmen a cappella singing group, is touring Florida for the third straight year. The 18-member group brings its unorthodox brand of music, humor and choreography to the Scott Center at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, 5625 Holy Trinity Drive in Melbourne for a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12 hosted by the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra. Showtime. “Every single time we go to Florida they have the craziest audiences,” Yale sophomore Felix Cancre, a Spizzwinks(?) member and the group’s spring tour manager, said in a phone conversation from the Ivy League university in New Haven, Conn. “People are really excited. It must be a byproduct of the fact that the weather is nice all winter long. ” Since 1914, the Spizzwinks(?) have entertained audiences around the world with a unique blend of harmony and tongue-in-cheek humor, performing at such prestigious venues as the White House and Carnegie Hall. The group was formed as a light-hearted alternative to the better-known Whiffenpoofs, Yale’s allsenior vocal group that has many former Spizzwinks(?) members on its roster. Spizzwinks(?) members present classic tunes from Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole for older audiences, but also throw in modern songs from Bruno Mars and Adele and even music from “Shrek 2” for kids, Cancre said. “We have a wide variety of songs that not only do we think our audience members will like, but that we really enjoy singing,” said Cancre, a tenor from Lexington, Mass. Between songs, the Spizzwinks(?) perform skits and tell jokes. Aaron Collins, artistic director for the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, said the orchestra “jumped at the chance” to bring the Spizzwinks(?) back again. The group last performed in Brevard County in 2013. “These young guys are incredible musicians who vieravoice.com

When the editor of Yale’s 1913 yearbook was unsure how to spell the new group’s name, he added a question mark in parentheses as an editorial mark. The group liked the look and kept the parenthetical question mark. The Spizzwinks(?) perform 85 to 100 concerts a year
during winter, spring and summer breaks, Cancre said. After shows in Florida, the group will complete its spring tour in Colombia, then perform in South Africa and Turkey this summer. The group’s goal is to have all members perform in six continents. The Spizzwinks(?) usually don’t visit the same area twice in order to entertain more people across the country, but make an exception for Florida, Cancre said. “You can walk around in a T-shirt and shorts,” he said. “You don’t have to convince us that it’s a great place to spend spring break.” To reserve free tickets, go to spacecoastsymphony.org or call toll free at 855-285-7276. The Once-ler did not know about his ecological footprint — defined as the acreage of land needed to provide resources for his business and assimilate its waste — or about natural interest — “the amount of readily [nature-]produced resources that we could use and still leave enough behind to, in time, replace what we took” — or even about a cradle-to-cradle business management fashion where companies take environmental responsibility a step further than what is required by law. He lost his business and everyone else lost their community, their home. Could that happen in real life? Why not? Businesses that practice cradle-to-cradle management are not the majority. The ones that choose to go down that road take charge into making their product the most sustainable it can be by utilizing highquality, durable, non-toxic materials and planning the life of their product from production to after consumers are done with it, in a closed-loop system. In this kind of system, “waste becomes raw material once again” and the cycle goes on always with the concept of renewability in mind. More and more businesses are becoming aware of their important role in our world and their part in helping us all become a more sustainable society, but not many have changed their management style and carry on working in the same mainstream economics as usual. It is time to realize that we can do business that is good for the economy, good for the people, and it is also good for the environment. It is time to change and change starts within each one of us because “unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Unless, just unless.
