The Viera High School girls soccer team poses with the Class 4A state championship trophy. The Hawks are the first program in school history to win back-to-back state titles. BY CARL KOTALA

Even before she became the Viera High girls soccer coach four years ago, Courtney Lundy knew the Hawks had the talent to become state champions one day. “Oh, yeah, I saw it before I came,” she said. “There was always talent at Viera. It was just a matter of getting them to believe.” If last year’s state title wasn’t enough to get everyone to believe in the Hawks, going back-to-back has certainly left no doubt.

Viera defeated a trio of unbeaten teams — including the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, St. Thomas Aquinas — on its way to a second straight Class 4A state championship last month. The Hawks finished the season 22-1-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state, No. 7 in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com. “This is the most validating feeling,” senior Jordan Walsh said following Viera’s 2-1 victory against Niceville in the title game at Melbourne High. “Our whole goal was to go back-toback. People were saying we couldn’t do it, people were doubting, and we proved

it. No matter what, if you say we can’t do something, if you put something in our way, we will accomplish that. “I’m very grateful for this team. We pushed through, fought for everything. There were multiple times when we’ve come from behind. We put everything out there. I couldn’t be more proud. This is a great feeling.” Winning the state title was truly a team effort, from Hollyn Knight’s gamewinning goal off a cross from Brooke

For Viera resident Charlotte Corbeil, art and nature are one and the same. So it made perfect sense to honor the memory of her husband, Charlie, with $1,000 in prizes to encourage children to take photographs, draw or paint pictures and write essays that convey the beauty of nature and inspire mankind to steward that precious resource. “To view and behold nature in its true form is a joy,” said Corbeil, who writes a column in Viera Voice called Charlotte’s Web-Spinning Tales. “Moreover, the appreciation of nature is further enhanced through art, photography, or prose and poetry,” she added. “Participation in these fields at an early age leads to the conservation of nature.” The winning works of the students will be unveiled at the Charlie Corbeil

Conservation Awards on April 22 at the Heritage Isle Clubhouse Ballroom in Viera. Hosted by Viera Voice and the nonprofit Preserve Brevard, the awards acknowledge individuals who have made great strides in conservation. Charlie Corbeil, who died in late 2013, was well regarded in conservation circles, holding a certification as a Florida Master Naturalist and whose nature photography is displayed all over the world. He was among the original Wetlands Rangers at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands, pointing out wildlife and helping budding nature photographers build their skill, and promoting the unique site in his travels worldwide. Charlotte Corbeil said the student arts contest is a great way to raise up future “Charlies.” “A child might be introduced by a parent, an

educator, or a special group, such as scouting. For example, Charlie Corbeil became a conservationist at an early age through the Boy Scouts of America where he earned his Eagle Scout badge. Then, in his adulthood, he resumed his conservation efforts through photography, nature articles and volunteer work. Thus, he hoped to protect the precious creatures and their habitats.” Submissions can be dropped off at the Viera Voice office, 7630 N. Wickham Rd., Suite 105, during office hours through 5 p.m. April 8. The contest is open to public, private and homeschool students and divided into age groups of K-2, 3-6, 7-8 and 9-12 with prizes in all levels and media categories. The winners will be revealed April 13. For more information on submission rules and instructions, call 321-242-1235, go to thecharlieawards.org. VV

Whether or not you shave your head, the stage at The Avenue in Viera will be the center of local compassion for childhood cancer victims March 12 during the sixth annual St. Baldrick’s event. Formed in 1999, with a national foundation established in 2004, St. Baldrick’s in Brevard has had a successful five-year goal of raising more than $1 million, said volunteer event coordinator Garrett Lamp. what else he could do. “The more I learned, the more I found out about childhood cancer … . With the blessing of my wife, Missy, we decided to bring the event to Brevard,” he said. The local event has far exceeded expectations from the very start, he said. “Our very first year we had a goal to raise $25,000 and shave 50 heads. We shaved 100 heads and raised $75,000. We raised $301,215 last year, $319,422 in 2014 and $267,256 in 2013,” he said. In fact, for the past three years the local event has been tops in Florida and in the top 10 nationwide. “On top of that, we are a very grass-roots, blue-collar effort. Our average donation pledge is between $25 to $50. What the Space Coast community has done is nothing short of astounding. I don’t think there’s words that you can come up with to express the gratitude of me as an organizer and the families that are fighting this horrible disease.” For more information, go to stbaldricks.org. Pipe, drum corps to perform in Viera on St. Patrick’s Day

The Space Coast Highlanders pipe and drum corps will perform on St. Patrick’s Day throughout Brevard County. BY KATIE PARSONS

St. Patrick’s Day conjures a lot of Celtic images — from the green beer to the lucky shamrock. When it comes to music, though, it’s the sound of the bagpipe that is most associated with the holiday’s celebrations. Locals interested in hearing bagpipe and drum talent will have an opportunity nearby. The Space Coast Highlanders, a bagpipe and drum corps, will perform throughout Brevard on St. Patrick’s Day — including a 1 p.m. show at the Viera Elks Club, 5820 U.S. Highway 1. The band specializes in Great Highland bagpipe, snare drum, tenor drum and bass drum. Performances often include popular jigs, marches, airs, reels and strathspeys. The group boasts 14

members, seven pipers and seven drummers, and hopes to expand to at least 26 members. For those interested who have absolutely no pipe or drum experience, the band members offer free lessons. “All kinds of people join pipe bands. You don’t have to be Scottish or Irish. You just have to love the music,” David Spurlock, pipe major for the group, said. Ancestry isn’t the only diverse aspect of the group, either. “Our youngest member is 15 and our oldest is 69. Our members mostly work for space-related jobs but we have a funeral director and artists and other retirees, to name a few,” Spurlock said. Recently, the band performed at the Brevard Renaissance Fair, where

Pizza Gallery renovation boosts sensory dining experience BY KATIE PARSONS

What do art and pizza have in common? That’s the question Pizza Gallery and Grill at The Avenue Viera has been answering for locals for 11 years through its visually appealing food and dining room. Recently, the restaurant underwent its first major renovation to elevate the sensory experience of dining in. New textured wallpaper, flooring, ceilings and lighting are all part of the redesigned look that is meant to give visitors an immersive casual dining experience. “This was basically an extreme business makeover,” Chris Coneen, Pizza Gallery founder and CEO, said. “From the front entrance all the way to the back patio, we redesigned the entire look.” Along with an extreme update in atmosphere, the menu has been revamped to include new dishes and flavors. There are also 12 new beers on tap. The restaurant was completely shut down during renovations, which

The remodel project was overseen by Jessica Neal of Unite Design, Tom Brandon of Brandon Development Enterprises and 15 subcontractors who all worked around the clock to finish the project in the three-day window. Pizza Gallery and Grill has been open for 27 years and has been at the Viera location for 11 years. “Eleven years is a lot of people coming through,” Coneen said. “It was time to update, and give it a warm, contemporary kind of look.” VV VIERA VOICE Cory Davis

Turkey conservation group will host annual banquet BY KATIE PARSONS

The local chapter of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation will host its annual banquet beginning at 5:30 p.m. March 5 at the Merritt Island Moose Lodge. The fundraising event will feature a dinner banquet, live entertainment, giveaways and prizes, and a silent auction. The NWTF Save the Habitat Save the Hunt’s mission is to conserve wildlife habitats by controlling turkey hunts. Through this national initiative, NWTF has committed to raising $1.2 billion to conserve or enhance more than 4 million acres of essential upland wildlife habitat, create at least 1.5 million hunters and open access to 500,000 acres for hunting, shooting and outdoor enjoyment. When the organization was founded 40 years ago, an

estimated 1 million turkeys lived in the U.S. Today that number is up to 7 million, according to local chapter president Keith Houston. “By controlling turkey hunts, we are actually doing a lot more. We are helping other birds, like quail, and we are also encouraging people to go outdoors and enjoy it,” Houston said. The local chapter, named the Space Coast Osceola Gobblers, was founded four years ago and already has a committed following. In addition to furthering its conservation and hunting initiatives, the group promotes an outdoor lifestyle. Recently, local members hosted an outdoor sporting day for kids at the Desert Ranch of Florida in St. Cloud. “Forty kids got the chance to shoot a bow and arrow, shoot BB guns, fly fish and learn from a champion

turkey caller,” Houston said. “It was a great outdoor event.” The fundraiser promises to offer items in the auction to please everyone. The value of items ranges from $25 for a candle set to a $3,000 pheasant hunt prize. Houston

says that 89 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to conservation efforts. “What we are accomplishing nationwide is really about more than the name implies. This is a full conversation effort and way to get people interested in being outdoors,”

Houston said. To RSVP for the event, contact Tammy Houston at 321-453-5637 or tammy. houston@5starsp.com. For more information on the National Wildlife Turkey Federation, go to nwtf.org. VV

Viera lacrosse teams should develop into contenders

BY CARL KOTALA

One team has an entirely new coaching staff while the other has a roster that features 12 players who are new to the varsity level. Nevertheless, the outlook for both the Viera boys and girls lacrosse teams is a good one this season, especially if the players continue to progress as they have from the start. “They’ve gotten so much better since the first day of practice,” Viera boys coach Charlie Crawford said. “They’re really starting to come together and play well together. They’re learning each other’s idiosyncrasies about what side they like to shoot from and how they catch and throw the ball.” The Viera boys graduated 14 players from last year’s team and return just three starters — goalkeeper Ryan Morgan, defenseman Jaxon Lenk and attacker Rob Rider. However, the Hawks have been getting solid play up front from Layne Miller and Julian Rodriguez with help from midfielders Nate Santa (senior) and Nick Rodriguez. Tommy Saunders and Asa Anderson have been doing well on faceoffs for the Hawks, who admittedly have been undergoing a bit of a learning curve with so many new players. Viera also has two new assistant coaches in Bo Bartlett and Joe Rodriguez. Crawford fully expects Viera to challenge Merritt Island for the district title by the end of the season. Viera’s girls have been showing signs of improvement as well under new coaches

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

The outlook for the Viera boys and girls lacrosse teams is a good one if they continue to show steady improvement.

Tyler Heckman and Erin Miller, who both played at Florida Tech last season only to have their careers cut short by injury. Heckman and Miller inherited a Viera program that is leaning heavily on a core of younger players who are new to the varsity level. “We were impressed to find out that all the girls we have that are our all-stars were all on JV last year,” Heckman said. “We only have two girls that are returners. So it’s basically a new program.” Top players for Viera this

season include Grace Blythe, Taylor Martin, Lexi Osborne, Maggie Bowen, Alyssa Bache and goalkeeper Jade Rodriguez. Though Rockledge will be a tough hurdle to overcome, if the Hawks continue to show improvement, they’ll be much tougher to contend with as the season advances. “I think we’ve got a good group of girls,” Heckman said. “We have a lot of hard workers. They definitely want to win. If we can instill the right lacrosse fundamentals, we’ll definitely have a winning team.” VV

Tigers expect another successful tennis season with Saurav Ghosal at No. 4 and Thomas Guyton at No. 5. On the girls side, the Tigers have a young, but very dangerous lineup. Freshman Ashleigh Kutryb is at the No. 1 singles spot, followed by Morgan McCartney, who is only in the sixth grade, but already very accomplished. “Morgan’s one of the top

12-year-olds in the state of Florida,” Harrison said. Mary Hawk won the district title at No. 5 singles as a seventh grader last season. Now, she’s playing in the third singles spot. Holy Trinity’s fourth and fifth spots are split between three players — Kathy Jara, Caroline Dixon and Jamie Perry. VV

The Holy Trinity boys and girls tennis teams figure to contend for the district and regional titles once again this year. BY CARL KOTALA

The biggest indicator of where the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy tennis program is these days lies in the numbers. Coach Mark Harrison had 70 players come out for the team this season, allowing him to have two junior high teams, two junior varsity teams and two varsity teams. “I’m really proud of the program,” Harrison said. “I’m proud of all of the kids.” The Tigers coach also thanked Holy Trinity Head of School James Landi and athletic director Scott Crockett for their support of the team that has had quite a lot of success the past few years.

And now with so many young players in the program at the lower levels, the Tigers essentially have their own feeder program, which should help keep them strong and in contention for district and regional titles for years to come. Holy Trinity’s girls teams have won three consecutive district titles, while the boys are working on back-to-back district crowns and last year advanced all the way to the state meet. Harrison expects much of the same in 2016, especially in the seven-team, Class 1A District 11 which fields a lineup that includes Florida Prep, Melbourne Central Catholic, Covenant Christian,

Edgewood, Merritt Island Christian and West Shore. “I’m expecting us to have a very successful season,” he said. “I expect us to do well in districts and well in regionals as well.” The Tigers opened the season with wins against Melbourne Central Catholic and Florida Prep and will also play other Brevard County teams such as Rockledge, Titusville and Cocoa Beach during the regular season. Holy Trinity’s boys team will be led by a pair of seniors — Hunter Morris at No. 1 singles and Andre Neuharth at No. 3. Playing No. 2 for Holy Trinity will be Matt Ryan

Viera tennis teams have strength at the top BY CARL KOTALA

Powered by strong play at the top of their respective lineups, the Viera High boys and girls tennis teams could be in for a banner season. “We think we have a very good chance of competing at the state level because there is so much talent, and these girls work really hard,” said first-year Viera girls coach Maria Woodruff. Led by a quartet of tournament-level players that are not only talented, but young, Woodruff’s Hawks certainly have the makings of a top contender. Junior Sasha Belaya will be Viera’s No. 1 singles player this season, while sophomore Izzie Diaz — who moved here from Omaha, Nebraska — is in the No. 2 spot. Freshman Hope Woodruff will play No. 3 for the Hawks, while another freshman, Amanda Sedaros, is in the fourth spot. The fifth singles position is a three-way contest between sophomore Emily Li, freshman Blakely Duke (who moved here from Arkansas) and senior Belou Briski. Viera opened the season not only going 4-0 against their opponents, but not even losing a match. The Hawks’

lineup is loaded, all right. “Those top four players have played in a lot of tournaments,” Woodruff said. “They’re very highlevel players. It’s exciting to have that on one high school team. Usually, high school teams have one or two good players. We have four.” Viera’s boys, meanwhile, are also strong at the top with junior Nico Fuchs

returning to play at the No. 1 singles spot for the third straight season. Right behind Fuchs is Gabe Diaz, a left-handed freshman who hits the ball with a lot of spin and is the younger brother of Izzie Diaz. Fuchs and Diaz figure to help the Hawks win a lot of matches this season, with help from senior Lucas Gusman at No. 3, junior Matt

Podzelinski at No. 4 and senior Dylan Layun in the fifth spot. Although Gusman and Layun are both seniors, the boys also have a young squad with four juniors, three sophomores and six freshmen. While getting past Melbourne and/or Satellite could be a challenge later on in the postseason, new

boys coach Chris Gallagher believes the Hawks have to be considered the favorite in a district that includes Bayside, Eau Gallie, Heritage, Merritt Island, Palm Bay and Sebastian River. “This is a team that’s got a chance,” Gallagher said. “I’ve got to believe we’re the favorite in the district, if we stay healthy.” VV

Holy Trinity lacrosse teams have eyes on postseason run BY CARL KOTALA

While the Holy Trinity boys lacrosse team is loaded with experience at every position, the girls team is learning to play under a new head coach. But as the season began, both teams had a positive outlook. “The girls are enthusiastic,” new girls coach Bret Barringer said. “They’re ready to play. We’re working on fundamentals, stick skills and understanding the game. I think if they apply themselves, making it to the district tournament is a realistic thing.” Barringer will rely heavily on the play of standout goalkeeper Megan Mikuen and six seniors — Laura Bell, Taylor McHollan, Noel Whitlock, Audrey Wilson, Katie Vopel and Kristian Del Rosario. There appears to be a new vibe on this year’s team under Barringer, a former assistant boys coach at Viera High. Bell said the players have been very supportive of each other, particularly with the more experienced players trying to help their teammates grow. The senior also praised Barringer for being supportive and offering the kind of constructive criticism that will help the players grow. “We’re definitely more cohesive than last year,

Loaded with seniors at all the key positions, the Holy Trinity boys lacrosse team is poised to have a very successful season.

and I think that’s definitely important to our own improvement,” she said. Because of that, making it to the district tournament doesn’t seem out of reach. “Based on how much we’ve improved in these three weeks, I can’t even imagine what we can do by the end of the season,” Bell said. Holy Trinity’s boys have their eyes on a big postseason as well. “I think we’re going to have a good year,” senior defenseman Hunter Altman said. “We have high expectations. Obviously, with all the seniors, we want to go out with a bang. We’re looking to win the district and then go to regionals and (go) as far as we possibly can.” Tigers coach Mike Leary is excited about his team’s experienced depth at virtually every position. Matt Starkey has stepped into the goalkeeper position

and played well. Senior defensemen Altman and Ricky Berthiaume have a lot of experience. Midfielders Justin Ganiban, Brian Putnam and Sean Taylor all have speed and Josh Moisand is a senior attackman. Sophomore Brian Bauman has also been working hard on his faceoffs, which could play a vital role in the Tigers’ success. “They’re all pretty athletic, hard-working kids,” Leary said. “We’ve got some speed on the team this year, which is nice. We’re looking forward to it.” Like last year’s team, this year’s group wants to spread the scoring around. “As a result, we have scoring from every position,” Leary said. “We don’t have a key guy that scores. That’s kind of what we’re doing this year, setting goals for the team. If everybody chips in a little, we’ll be in good shape.” VV

of the puzzle,” Jordan Walsh said. Kelliher, who played on Viera’s varsity for four years, couldn’t say enough about the job Lundy has done. In just four short years, she has turned the Hawks from a program with unrealized potential into a powerhouse that must now be considered among the top girls soccer teams in the state.

Believe it. “Courtney is incredible,” Kelliher said. “She is, by far, the best coach I’ve ever had. “Her and Brian’s goal, as soon as they came in, was, ‘we’re going to make this a program to be talked about, that girls want to be a part of.’ “That’s what we did. Viera, Holy Trinity make signing day a memorable one BY CARL KOTALA

The most highly anticipated national signing day in Viera High sports history didn’t disappoint last month, while over at Holy Trinity, there was a definitely familial feeling in the air. Viera wide receiver Tre Nixon, who held more than 40 scholarship offers, officially signed with the University of Mississippi. Quarterback Hayden Kingston is headed to Wake Forest, while safety Jamyson Boyd and wide receiver Alex Cabrera are going to Eastern Kentucky. Cornerback Trevor Merritt signed with Bethune Cookman, while athlete Evan Cruz committed to Charleston

Southern University. That was hardly the end of it, though, for the Hawks,

Seniors Jordan Walsh, left, Alex Capalbo and Kiana East were among 11 players from Viera High signing college commitments.

who had a record 11 players officially commit to colleges last month. Jordan Walsh, a standout on Viera’s back-to-back state championship girls soccer teams, signed with UCF. Goalkeeper Alex Capalbo, meanwhile, is going to Barton State Community College. Also going the junior college route were softball pitcher Kiana East (Miami Dade) and golfers Ryan Rozic (Eastern Florida State College) and Kyle DeCenzo (Eastern Florida State College). Meanwhile, at Holy Trinity,

soccer player Luca Campanini signed to play at Florida Tech, where his father won a pair of national titles as a player and as an assistant coach. Matt Austin followed in his family’s military tradition by signing with the Merchant Marine Academy, where he will play both football and baseball. Soccer player Emily Morgan, one of the top scorers in program history, signed with Nova Southeastern. When asked why they chose their particular schools, most of the athletes had a familiar response. “It just felt like family,”

Nixon said. “It was my best fit for me, offensively and off the field, too. The biggest thing for me was it was a big family. That’s one thing they preach.” It was a special day to say the least. “It’s awesome to see so many people that you grew up with, and you talked about this dream and this day,” Kingston said. “You guys all had this dream of playing college football and to see, for the most part, all of my friends accomplish their dream at some level, in some type of way, it’s really awesome.” VV

Duran tournament draws top amateurs to the Space Coast BY CARL KOTALA

“People see ‘championship’ sometimes and they think, ‘I’m not good enough for that,’ ” Duran head golf pro Matt Morrison said. “But everybody’s welcome to participate, within their flight.” Last year’s event was won by Josh McMahon of England, who took the lead when his tee shot from the 17th hole went 235 yards — into the wind, no less — and found

The 10th annual Space Coast Amateur golf tournament at Duran Golf Club has a little something for everyone. Sure, the March 12 and 13 event will draw some of the top amateurs from around the area. But there will also be flights for people with, say a 25 handicap, as well.

Prizes have been upgraded to include a new driver for each flight winner. The entry fee of $125 per player includes two rounds of golf, practice balls (prior to play), lunch both days and prizes. The format for the field of up to 100 amateur players will be 36 holes of individual stroke play. Players must have a USGA handicap, though Duran can help establish one for golfers if necessary. While golf carts will be available, traditionalists will be able to walk the course this year as well. Gators, Knights will play benefit soccer match SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

For the first time on the Space Coast, the University of Florida and University of Central Florida’s men’s soccer teams will square off in a regular-season match. Hosted by the Space Coast Gator Club, the match will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9, under the lights on the football field at Viera High School. The event is a fundraiser for both teams, as both universities cover only a small portion of their operating budgets. “Anytime you play an in-state rival, it’s a huge game,” Space Coast Gator Club president David Melnyk said. “This will be a ‘Battle for Brevard.’ We would like to thank both teams for making a special effort to come here to play, and also the UCF Alumni Space Coast Chapter.” UCF won the Fall Tournament Championship and was ranked No. 3 in the Southeast region of NIRSA. They were also national championship qualifiers and finished in the elite eight. Florida ended the fall season with an impressive 8-1-2 record, with its only

loss coming to UCF in the finals of its own tournament. UCF went on to the national tournament and placed in the elite eight. There will also be a youth soccer mini clinic from 5 to 6 p.m. with the players from both teams on the field before the regular match. Both teams will have official team merchandise and other items for sale. Tailgating begins at 3 p.m. and the stadium gates and concession stands open at 4 p.m. UF’s roster is filled with plenty of Brevard homegrown talent including Thomas McDowell, Drew Geyer, James Bocinsky and Zach Stewart, all hailing from Melbourne. Seating, especially for the youth soccer clinic, is limited. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Adult tickets are $5, children 10 and younger get in free and the youth soccer clinic is $5. Tickets are available at eventbrite.com, spacecoastgatorclub.com or from any Space Coast Gator Club or UCF Space Coast Alumni board member. Holy Trinity unveils Academic Merit Scholarship Program BY CARL KOTALA

Holy Trinity Head of School James Landi has unveiled a new Academic Merit Scholarship Program that will help bright children who might not otherwise have the financial means to attend the college preparatory school. Applications will be taken for the scholarship program for children entering grades seven to 11 through May 2 and the money will be raised through donations from local corporate and business sponsorships, mainly from a fundraising event called an Evening of Elegance which will take place March 12. “We wanted to form a partnership between the business community and the corporate community and the school that revolves around finding young people that have great academic talent, whose parents generally don’t have the wherewithal to pay for a full tuition or any part of a tuition,” Landi said. Students applying for the scholarship must be residents of Brevard County and citizens of the United States. They must be eligible to enroll in middle school and high

school and qualify for financial aid as determined by the independent FACTS Management system. It is not open to current Holy Trinity students. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 grade-pointaverage and must be able to maintain a 3.5 GPA once enrolled. The scholarships are good for one academic school year and may be renewed as long as the student continues to meet certain criteria. In addition to filling out the application form, students will need — among other things — to take an entrance examination that includes a math placement test and a timed essay/writing segment. Students who meet all of the criteria will meet with members of the selection committee and a panel will decide the scholarship recipients. A full scholarship includes tuition, registration and facilities fees, and other necessities such as textbooks, lunches, field trip fees and other required materials. The cost of a full scholarship varies because of the different tuition rates between middle school and high school.

Partial scholarships will also be available. The total number of scholarships available will depend on the amount of money raised at the Evening of Elegance, which will be held at the Timbers West Ranch of Mark and Cheryl Wadsworth. The event is themed “Moonlight & Magnolias” and will feature gourmet food stations from Arthurs Catering; a Kentucky bourbon and cigar bar; and dancing to live music performed by Nashville recording artists,

The cost of a single ticket to the event is $200. Organizers are hoping to raise $150,000. funded from donations by the corporate and business community. Landi, who also started similar, successful programs at the Community School of Naples and The Salisbury School in Maryland, noted the reaction in Central Florida has been positive. “This is a very generous group of people in this county,” Landi said. “They’re all saying the same thing. They all seem to resonate to the same philanthropic cause and that is the notion that high quality education is transformational.” Holy Trinity Class of 2016 graduates will be heading off to some of the finest schools in the country — Harvard, Yale and Princeton, to name a few. Not only does the scholarship program give children a chance to get on the path to great success, but corporate sponsors can see the direct impact their donation is having. “People from outside the school aren’t interested in giving to bricks and mortar, or giving to a program,” Landi said. “They want to know they’re touching kid’s lives.” For more information, go to htacademy.org. Viera High School to host fashion and interior design show BY WENDY SCHEURING

Hosted by the Viera High School Family, Career Community Leaders of America (FFLCA), the Tax Day Treasure Fashion and Design Show will showcase a design gallery featuring fashion, interior and digital design, two- and three-dimensional art, and a fashion show, from 6 to 9 p.m. April 15. “It’s a way to celebrate creativity of any art or design,” said Carrie Humphrys, Interior/Fashion Design instructor at Viera High School. “The show is an opportunity for students all over Brevard County [in grades 1 through 12] to exhibit their work.” Viera High is the only school in the district to offer fashion design and interior design. Humphrys began teaching interior design classes at Viera High nine years ago, and fashion design was added this school year. There are 142 students participating in the programs, which range from one to four years.

Georgia Kennedy is an interior design student and one of the show’s coordinators.

In addition to the designing and sewing of clothing, the fashion design program involves learning specific seam finishes, straight stitching, coordinated garment construction and historical design. Students have created business casual suits, a prom gown, a southern Belle-type gown and quilts. The program also helps students earn Adobe Illustrator certification for

fashion design. “In core classes, there is not much room for expressing oneself, but in design, Ms. Humphrys drives us to do just that. I’ve learned not to be afraid of being unique,” said VHS senior Georgia Kennedy, one of the show’s coordinators and an interior design student. “I enjoy the freedom to release my creativity in a judgmentfree place.”

DeLaura Middle School wins big at science fair BY CARL KOTALA

DeLaura Middle School students really cleaned up at the award ceremony for the Brevard Intracoastal Regional Science and Engineering Fair last month. In addition to taking first place in eight of 13 junior categories, DeLaura had two students receive the Best in Show award. Eight students were invited to take part in

the state competition, nine were invited to take part in the Broadcom Masters and four were selected to show their displays at the Orlando Science Center. Students also combined to receive roughly $1,000 in awards and, of the 65 children who were part of DeLaura’s Science Research team, 49 of them placed. “This was our best year by far,” DeLaura science

research teacher Debbie Austin said. “We just had an amazing group of kids this year. They were here during winter break and after school. They really stuck it out.” Eighth-grader Deegan Tarrillo won Best in Show for the category Intelligent Machines, Robotics and System Software. As part of a two-year project, Tarrillo used Python

He developed a program for the traffic light to send a signal to the car, and for the car to decide whether it was safe to go through the light. “This year, I did it so it wasn’t just one page of program,” Tarrillo said. “It had multiple pages. It had multiple programs running at once for the car, and multiple programs for the light. It was able to do more than one thing, so it can run appropriately and make decisions better on whether it’s safe to go through an intersection.” Eighth-grader Maggie McMahan won Best in Show in the Cellular Molecular Biology & Biochemistry division. Her project studied bacteria that causes plaque in the mouth, which is known as Streptococcus mutans. McMahan tested three types of mouthwash

— with alcohol, alcohol free and the more natural method of using coconut oil. She also tested to see if any of the mouthwashes modified cheek cell structure, “I found that mouthwash that contains alcohol is the best method if you are wanting to use it to eradicate plaque, and that coconut oil and alcohol-free mouthwash will actually increase the amount of plaque-causing bacteria that you have in your mouth more than what would normally be there,” McMahan said. “I also found that the mouthwash with alcohol modified 70 percent of the cheek cells that I tested and the alcohol-free mouthwash modified 50 percent of the cheek cells. The coconut oil wasn’t a very good method, but it didn’t modify any cheek cells.” McMahan and Tarrillo will both attend Viera High next year. For a full list of winners, go to vieravoice.com. VV

Quest students win Buddy Bench after dominating essay contest

VIERA VOICE Katie Parsons

Quest Elementary students gather around the Buddy Bench on the school’s playground. BY KATIE PARSONS

A playground can be a lonely place if a kid feels left out, or unsure how to approach peers. Activities, like recess, that are meant to offer positive socialization models can do just the opposite — and often no one is really to blame. Students throughout the country, including at Quest Elementary School, are setting out to change that with the addition of Buddy Benches on playgrounds. These benches are designated spots where students can go and simply sit when they feel left out. It is the responsibility of other students to reach out to their peers on the Buddy Bench and invite them to play. At the end of last school year, Brevard County Schools and Merritt Square Mall hosted an essay contest open to all students for the chance to win a Buddy Bench at their own schools. The essay had to contain information on why the particular school needed a Buddy Bench and what the student writing would do to ensure the bench was successful. So many Quest Elementary students from the second grade classes of Sally Kornick

and Tiffany Letawa wrote essays that the school was awarded the Buddy Bench. It was donated by Merritt Square Mall and installed during the summer on the playground. The Buddy Bench concept is popular in other countries already but gained steam in the United States in 2013 when a secondgrade student in York, Pa. named Christian Buck introduced one at his school. Research shows that peer support systems, like a Buddy Bench, combat depression and prevent bullying. Leah Clemons, now in third grade, was new to Quest when the essay contest launched. In her essay, Clemons talked about the importance of the bench to new students. “If kids are lonely or new, this is a way they can make friends,” said Clemons regarding the essay she wrote last year. At the beginning of this school year, the former students of Kornick and Tiffany appeared on the school’s morning announcements to explain the Buddy Bench and how it worked to other students. “I think their explanation was successful. Almost every recess, at least one student utilizes it,” Kornick said. VV

Local teen entrepreneur appears on ‘Shark Tank’ BY WENDY SCHEURING

About the size of a gumball, Nohboballs might just change the world. They are single-use, water soluble, shampoo balls, made in America, sulfate-free, paraben-free, not tested on animals or derived from any animal source, are travel regulation compliable and convenient. The utopia of shampoos, Nohbo (pronounced No-Bo) is an acronym for “NO Hair BOttles.” “To use, take a Nohbo out of its wrapper and use the friction of your hands to break it open. It breaks down and lathers completely, enough for a long-haired individual,” founder Benjamin Stern said. The Viera High School junior recalls a documentary he saw two years ago that set the idea of Nohbo into action. “It was upsetting to see how many of these bottles were clogging up landfills and the ocean. Shampoo bottles are thicker and take even longer to decompose. Anywhere from 450 to 1,000 years,” he said. He saved earnings from part-time jobs. His family

Six months later, he heard back. The next several months were spent undergoing reviews and videotaping. “It’s very competitive. But, it’s an amazing opportunity regardless if you get a deal or not,” he said. The segment aired on

Feb. 19. A crowdfunding campaign was set up on Indiegogo. “It will take 79,000 years for the ocean to be cleared of plastic. If you’re concerned about it, try our products,” Stern said. For more information, go to nohboball.com. VV

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF

Superhero 5K

Like many women, you probably maintain a demanding schedule, drive household purchasing decisions and still find time to care for your families or other loved ones. With all that responsibility, it’s important to take good care of your own financial future.

Super heroes of all kinds gathered at The Avenue Viera for the fourth annual Superhero 5K run on Saturday, Feb. 6. The event included a Super Hero costume contest and a mascot race. It was hosted by nonprofit Friends of Children of Brevard. All proceeds benefit abused, neglected and abandoned children and support the Guardian ad Litem program.

My thoughtful, unbiased guidance can help you develop a strategy toward a secure retirement and other long-term financial goals. Call today for more information or to schedule a consultation.

Fourth annual Cajun & Creole Festival pleases the palate BY MARY BROTHERTON

I Want to See Clearly This Year!

First in Brevard to provide bladeless cataract laser surgery

“Our patients experience a new clarity every day!”

Anjanette Wicks brings The Big Easy to Brevard for the fourth time from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at Blinds of All Kinds and JR Rib Shack, 3450 U.S. Hwy. 1 in Rockledge. Cayenne’s Seafood is Wicks’ Louisiana-style catering business, and the festival offers the perfect opportunity to sample tasty delicacies. This year, she and eight food vendors will provide crawfish quesadillas, fried gator tail, conch salad, conch fritters crawfish pies, crawfish and grits, jambalaya, pulled pork and hot dogs for the children. Mr. J’s is bringing his ice cream, too. Wicks said this year she is having New Orleans King Cake. “The first 25 to show up will get a free slice of King Cake,” she said. Wicks said she wanted to bring diversity to the area and she has done just that with her festival. Proceeds are returned to the community in the form of good entertainment on the day of the festival and proceeds going to charities. “It’s not me,” Wick said, “It’s God. I couldn’t do it without God. The festival gives me the opportunity to bring the true authentic flavor of Louisiana to Brevard.”

Space Coast Stadium successful venue for Senior Expo BY MARY BROTHERTON PHOTOS BY DARRELL WOEHLER, MARC RHODES AND CORY DAVIS

The annual Senior Expo and 10th Boomer Guide launch on Feb. 5 was a surprising success. The surprise was how many people attended despite a windy, 40-degree day. More than 1,000 people of all ages lined up to see Dolly Niemic Konwinski, a second and third baseman in the AllAmerican Girls Professional Baseball League. Known for great destination locations, the Senior Expo was held at Space Coast Stadium this year. Also popular for its themed events, the 2016 baseball-centric expo was called the 7th Inning Stretch. Free peanuts and Cracker Jack ran out before noon and many vendors reported their stock of giveaways ran out quickly, too. The purpose of the annual expo is to introduce Brevard residents to the many wonderful vendors and service providers in the county as well as to launch the Boomer Guide. In 2015, the North American Mature Publishers Association named the Boomer Guide the “Best Senior Resource Guide” and awarded Senior Life the coveted Best of Show trophy. The Boomer Guide connects readers with thousands of service providers, clubs, organizations and support groups. For more information about advertising your business or to have a free listing for your nonprofit organization in next year’s Boomer Guide, call 321-242-1235. VV

Space Coast Dance Club members enjoyed the day.

Cathy Noren and Jean Uhl played cornhole.

Dolly Niemic Konwinski, second from left, strikes a pose with her fans at the Senior Expo.

The event began with a fitness walk around the warning track.

More than 1,000 people attended the annual Senior Expo. It was a good day to wear silly stovepipe hats at the Senior Expo.

Smile Design holds open house in new location BY MARY BROTHERTON

Smile Design’s open house on Friday, Jan. 8 was so successful, the staff had to go buy Chinese take-out for their guests. Dr. Chris Edwards moved his practice from a location on Devereux Drive, where he’d been for 13 years, to the new

facility located at 5445 Village Dr., just behind the corner of Murrell Road and Viera Blvd. In October, Dr. Rob Brown joined Smile Design and the new facility’s more functional layout provides an efficient work flow for the two dentists and their supporting staff. The larger facility allows Edwards to lease out

executive suites, while providing his patients with a more beautiful view. Each of the themed rooms creates a unique experience and reflects insight into Edwards’ personality. Patients may find themselves surrounded by Star Wars characters, immersed in outer space,

“This one’s a little different,” said David Tomczak, a PGA golf professional and general manager of Duran Golf Club in Viera. Tomczak is referring to the 5-Star Chamber Golf Challenge, a fund-raising event on April 29 for the Melbourne Regional Chamber and 24 local charities and organizations. A select field of two dozen golfers will all start at once on Friday afternoon, and play their way through a 50-hole marathon, ending six hours later under the lights of Duran’s par 3 course. “The format is adapted from the successful walkathon fundraising model which has been used for years with large charities

throughout the country,” Tomczak said. “We just adapted it to a golf event, and made it enjoyable by playing it on the fun par 3 course at Duran in the cool of the evening.” Proceeds from the fundraiser will not only support the Chamber’s operations in the Melbourne Region, but will also aid the everyday operation of 24 Brevard County charities and organizations. Tomczak is chair of the chamber golf committee. He praised the local business leaders who have stepped up and volunteered to be both 50-hole marathon players and fundraisers. Dukes of Doo Wop performed at the Senior Life expo

BY MARY BROTHERTON

Attendees at the Senior Expo and launch of the 2016 Boomer Guide had a chance to reminisce and dance to the music of Dukes of Doo Wop, the group that performed at the 7th Inning Stretch Expo on Friday, Feb. 5 at Space Coast Stadium. Lou Phillips founded Dukes of Doo Wop in 2010 and the

group entertains throughout Florida, with an emphasis on the Space Coast and Treasure Coast. Phillips said the group performs with sound tracks and instrumentation with some portions a cappella in a manner similar to music heard on the television show “Happy Days” and the movie “American Graffiti.” “Our focus is on the vocals and vocal harmony,” he said.

Phillips, who has been singing professionally since 1965, was a member of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, famous for songs like “On the Cover of the Rolling Stone” and “Sylvia’s Mother.” David Francis, another member of the group, was a member of the DuPrees, a

group of vocalists from the 1960s who crooned chart toppers, “Have you Heard?” and “You Belong to Me.” Phillips said, “We are keeping this kind of music alive and introducing it to younger audiences. It’s all about the vocals.” Attendees at the Senior

Yes, the state is looking into regulating polystyrene, more commonly known as Styrofoam, in a way that “cities and counties would be prohibited from banning foam plates [food and beverage containers] and other products.” Under HB 7007, that just passed the House, “this preemption does not apply to local ordinances or provisions thereof enacted before January 1, 2016, and does not limit the authority of a local government to restrict the use of polystyrene by individuals on public property, temporary vendors on public property, or entities engaged in a contractual relationship with the local government for the provision of goods or services, unless such use is otherwise preempted by law.” A similar bill, SB 1010, is in the Senate. If we don’t pay attention, all these kinds of bills will pass and leave us with no control over what is done right in our backyard. Sadly, way too often our leaders make decisions based on annual budgets and immediate gains instead

of considering some longterm ill (and many times irreversible) effects certain policies may inflict on the people. In place of a fracking bill, why not introduce a bill that fuels investments in clean energy? It is important for us to be aware of what happens in our government. A good way of doing that is by joining organizations like The League of Women Voters of

the Space Coast — lwv-spacecoast.org — to keep abreast of the issues that affect us and to have a voice when something becomes a threat to our interests and well-being. The legislative session is scheduled to end around March 11. And this is how fortunate we are that March is here. VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@3RsAndBeyond.org.

Researching the Confederate soldier in your family’s roots SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Genealogy Society of South Brevard (GSSB) presents Kathy Stickney, who will speak on “Researching Your Confederate Soldier” on Wednesday, March 9 in the parish hall of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 1830 S. Babcock St. in Melbourne. Stickney has been researching her own family for 18 years. Most of her father’s family fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War, so she has methodically researched and written articles about their involvement in the war. Her novel, “For Those I Love,” released by Tate Publishing in August 2013, was based on her family. A graduate of The National Institute on Genealogical Research in Washington, D.C. and The Institute of Genealogical & Historical Research at Samford University, Stickney’s articles have appeared in numerous local, regional and national genealogy publications. She is a member of the Florida State Genealogical Society and serves as a member of the FSGS Pioneer Descendant Certification Committee. The program begins sharply at 10 a.m. with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. Admittance will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
