Non-traditional family dishes add spice to Thanksgiving meals

BY R. NORMAN MOODY It is clear what Thanksgiving Day is all

about — giving thanks. And it is no doubt that the centerpiece of this American celebration is the

food — the turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberries, sweet potato casserole, hot rolls and pumpkin pie. That is a tradition for which to be thankful. But when the Pilgrims and Native Americans got together for that first harvest Thanksgiving, the menu may have included wild turkey, venison and fish. There likely was no potatoes or cranberry sauce as we know it today. And there most certainly was no pumpkin pie because they did not have flower or butter. What we know as the traditional Thanksgiving

Day meal has evolved, changed and been added to. As immigrants followed the pilgrims many decades later, they added their own side dishes to the traditional turkey and dressing. “We always had black beans and rice,” said Sylvia Montes, the office manager at Bluewater Creative Group. In some Latin Caribbean nations, rice and beans cooked together is called Congri. In Central America, a similar dish is called Gallo Pinto. It is a staple in many Latin American households and is added to the traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Those of other heritage added their own dish. “There was always an Italian dish for all the holidays,” said Adam Palumbo, the art director for Bluewater Creative Group, whose father is Sicilian. Publisher Jill Blue’s family shared a recipe that was always a part of the Thanksgiving Day meal. “My mother always made a frozen fruit salad and pecan pie.” she said. “My dad didn’t cook, but he had a blast carving the turkey.” VV Viera Voice will share recipes online from some of our business partners beginning Nov. 15.

Mental health fair goes virtual amid pandemic BY MARIA SONNENBERG Zoom into better mental health. COVID-19 threatens not just our physical health, but also our mental wellbeing. More than 40 percent of respondents to a CDC survey this summer reported issues such as anxiety, depression and substance abuse, representing a major spike in behavioral health problems. We need help. Organizations such as Suntree United Methodist Church are stepping up. Although many churches steer away from mental health ministry, Suntree United Methodist has embraced it with an annual Mental Health Fair. “Our goal each year is to increase awareness of mental health conditions and mental health needs in Brevard, to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health, provide encouragement and guidance for those who need mental health support and care and to advocate for improved mental health care,” the Rev. Dr. John Baggett said. The retired pastor and former state director of mental health in North

Judge Steven Leifman is the keynote speaker at Suntree United Methodist Church’s Virtual Mental Health Fair, scheduled via Zoom on Nov. 15. Also speaking are licensed mental health counselors Laura McCarthy and Rayna Houvouras, top and bottom left; licensed marriage and family counselor Stephanie Byrd, top right; and Tonya Dix from Circles of Care.

Carolina currently chairs Suntree UMC’s Mental Health Task Force, which organizes the church’s annual Mental Health Fair, this year held virtually via Zoom. Suntree United Methodist Church serves a community composed substantially of older adults. “Seniors are especially vulnerable to mental health conditions, and that is one of the chief reasons the church

decided to focus on mental health,” added Baggett. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 15 percent of adults age 60 and older suffer from a mental disorder. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that 17 percent of older adults are affected by alcohol or prescription drug abuse. The Virtual Mental Health Fair will provide hope

and help for individuals struggling with these challenges. On Sunday, Nov. 15, the community can join any or all of the sessions in the free event, which begins with Mental Health Wellness 101 at 1 p.m. Licensed marriage and family therapist Stephanie Byrd and licensed mental health counselor Rayna Houvouras will address common mental

health issues and provide strategies for increasing and maintaining mental health wellness, especially during stressful times. At 2 p.m., Tonya Dix, vice president of clinical and quality care at Circles of Care, will discuss distinguishing between stress-related mental health problems and mental illness. Rick Burklew, a therapist and program director with the addiction treatment program Peace Club, will join clinical mental health and addictions professional Laura McCarthy in a 3 p.m. presentation on understanding addiction. Keynote speaker Judge Steven Leifman’s program on Mental Illness and Criminal Justice begins at 4 p.m. Judge Leifman, who serves as a special advisor on criminal justice and mental health for the Supreme Court of Florida, was the subject of the 2020 PBS documentary, “The Definition of Insanity.” The film highlighted the MiamiDade Mental Health Program model for addressing the current mental health crisis in America. Community garden distributes its harvest with those in need BY ERNEST ARICO If you’re interested in learning about organic gardening or enjoy spending time outdoors with friends and neighbors, then the Blue Sky Community Garden is a place you might want to check out. Located at Suntree United Methodist Church at 7400 North Wickham Road, the garden was started six years ago when co-founders Karen Shea and Kendall Sanderson asked the church board if they could use a portion of the church’s property to start a community garden. Today, the fenced-in

garden measures 50 feet by 100 feet and is operated by six to 10 volunteers from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, weather permitting. There is no work done in the garden during July and August. “We started the garden because we wanted to educate people about gardening,” said Shea, a 15year church member. “We also wanted to grow organic vegetables and donate the produce to food pantries and organizations in need.” Some of the vegetables planted include carrots, lettuce, radishes, squash, beans and peas. blueberry and tangerine trees. Shea said the garden produces more than 1,000 pounds of organic vegetables each year which is then distributed to those in need and shared among the volunteers. What has helped in the garden’s growth is the irrigation system. The system was installed recently by Boy Scouts for their Eagle Scout projects. “It (the system) has made a big difference,” Shea said. Church member and volunteer Rhonda McKinney of Suntree said you’ll never find a better group of people at the garden.

“Everyone is so friendly and you will learn a lot about gardening,” she said. Shea said the garden raises its own funds in the spring when it holds its annual Eco Fair and Farmers Market. The garden also needs more volunteers and would like to expand. “You don’t have to be a church member to be a volunteer,” Shea said. Viera High bowling teams building bright future BY CARL KOTALA

After a breakout performance two years ago, the Viera High School bowling teams are working their way back toward the top. Led by junior captains Cam Cox, Collin Cox and Colin Frost — who are all averaging more than 200 a game — the Viera boys team could be on the cusp of another dominating season like 2018, when they finished fourth in the state. “We lost three seniors last year, so we brought on a slew of guys that will definitely help us in the years to come,” Viera coach James Brand wrote in an email. “Being a shortened season (because of the coronavirus pandemic), we didn’t win as many games as we’d like, but I believe the corps is forming for an elite team in the future.” The district tournament was set to take place late last month at Shore Lanes in Palm Bay. The state tournament is set for Nov. 3 to 5, once

again at the Boardwalk Bowl Entertainment Center in Orlando. “We’re not winning like we’re accustomed to and did our freshman year when we were district champs and finished fourth in the state,

nor last year when we lost in the district final four,” Frost said in an email statement provided by Brand. “But we will be back.” Viera’s girls team, meanwhile, has continually made steady improvement

at the state championships. “We had a great race and it really changed around everything for us,” junior Michael Toppi said. “We’re feeling really strong now going into the postseason.” Viera is set to host the Class 4A, District 15 meet on Oct. 31 before moving onto the regional meet at North Port on Nov. 7. The state meet is scheduled for Nov. 14

at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. Toppi leads a boys team that expects to get to the state meet. Robbie Naberhaus is Viera’s No. 2 runner, followed by Cameron Raney and either Aedan Rendek or Josh Ingalls. The girls, who have proven to be resilient and shouldn’t be counted out of making an appearance in Tallahassee, are led by Isabella Babilonia, Alexa Baker and Isabella Narvaez. through the past few years. “The girls team, I am extremely proud of,” Brand wrote. “It’s the same corps team as three years ago when the team was all new sophomores. Now, captains Summer King and Brianna

Staerk are seniors and ending their careers on a high note.” In an email statement provided by Brand, King talked about how much the attitude on the girls team has changed through the years, noting that when the bowlers first came out, it was just something to do for fun. But the players soon realized it was more about teamwork, being held to an individual standard, and that memories were made with teammates on both teams and throughout the county that will last forever. “Overall, we brought on numerous freshmen to try and mold into elite bowlers and, if anything, attempt to learn the sport, learn leadership skills as well as have fun with everyone in the county,” Brand wrote. “With this being a unique year, I know we have achieved that and it will be a year none of these young athletes will ever forget.” VV

Duran Golf Club Men’s League starts Chase for the Cup BY GEORGE WHITE Opening day for the Duran Golf Club Men’s League in Viera felt a little like Christmas morning for Head Pro Matt Morrison and players willing to follow COVID-19 safety measures to try to make the top 48 players for a two-week Chase for the Cup ending March 24. They gathered Oct. 7 on the Duran veranda — wearing face coverings — for opening remarks by Jerry McAnulty and rule changes by Morrison. Other safety

measures include Plexiglass partitions for golf carts if requested and swim noodle

inserts in the holes to keep the balls from going all the way in.

“It’s our premier event and has increasingly grown. Today, we have 72 players and last year I think we had 50. It’s very close to capacity,’’ Morrison said. “The camaraderie’s the best. Most of these guys all get along great.” The league is made up of mostly Viera residents, including many who have served in the military. Duran now has designated parking spots for combat-wounded veterans such as league participant Terry Glendy, who earned two Purple Hearts as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. “This is one of the best courses around,” Glendy said. “I try to play three times a week.’’ Morrison described the league as mildly competitive but still taken seriously. The

top players, in A flight which has about 12 players, are all a 6 handicap or better. “It can be as competitive as you want it to be, but still we have enough flights where even the higher handicappers are able to compete within their flights,’’ he said. Duran Golf Club opened 15 years ago. Opening day marks the shift to “in season” with shotgun starts and the return of winter residents. “We had our busiest summer by far and we know a big portion of that was people really couldn’t do anything else. Golf was considered a safer type sport. It’s been a banner year for golf nationwide. If there was a silver lining in all this, it’s been good for the golf industry,’’ he said. V V

Every now and then something touches your heart beyond activities, golf, social events and you loudly hear a call to action to help those less fortunate affected by this pandemic. The call was heard loud and clear by members of the Viera East Golf Association (VEMA) to help supply food to feed the families struggling due to no fault of their own. David Horst, Simon Cole, Craig Smith and David Hill coordinated and organized monthly food drives starting in June. VEMA would average around 50 golfers per weekly event and we decided to collect nonperishable food items and bring them to Divots Restaurant on the third Thursday of each month to support the local food banks and the families in need. The members of VEMA whole heartedly supported our efforts and we have been able to donate more than a thousand dollars of nonperishable food items to help those families in need. On Oct. 1, the Viera East Men’s Golf Association

played a flighted individual tournament. The top four players in flights A, B, C, and D were: • Flight A: Tom Welters, Jim Robinson, Jim Kopliner and Tim Brown. • Flight B: Craig Smith, Gerry Adams, Dennis Lamb and Freddie Baltazar. • Flight C: Mike Hachee, Lorenzo Battle, Ed Raleigh and a tie between David Hill and Martin Gillette. • Flight D: Ernie Para, Tom Walker, Gary Baxter and Bob Gustavso. On Oct. 8, VEMA played a four-man team event using the two best balls. The top five teams were: • First place: Jim Kopliner, David Smith, Tony Hines and Gary Baxter. • Second place: Steve Wing, Ben Herman, Freddie Baltazar and Allen Satcher. • Third place: Niles Jensen, Gary Shiffrin, Alan Pinetter and Greg Humble. • Fourth place tie: Gene Quirk, Craig Smith, Ed Raleigh and a blind pick. • Fourth place tie: Ben Dickerson, Dennis Lamb, David Horst and David Hill.VV

Tech master Aiani named Viera High’s Employee of the Year BY CARL KOTALA

It didn’t take long for a young James Aiani to show he had a knack for working with computers. “When I was younger, I loved the fascination of taking apart computers, opening up the schematics and seeing where all the cables go,” he said. “My parents told me at the age of 4, they bought a Best Buy computer. It was an HP. Brand new. “And I put it all together at the age of 4, just looking at the schematics.” Aiani, 26, is not only a 2013 Viera High school graduate, he has worked at his alma mater as a

technology associate for the past five years. And for the second time

in his career, he has been named Viera’s Employee of the Year. “I’m honored and surprised for the second time,” he said. With the coronavirus pandemic creating a challenging situation for teachers and students, Aiani has played a vital role in the transition to having students both in the classroom and e-learning at home. There have been some challenges in the technology infrastructure — broken webcams and older model laptops among them — but Aiani said everything has gone smoothly. Of course, in the world of technology, you have to stay

ever vigilant. “The biggest challenge right now is making sure all the zooms are working for the e-learning students … just keeping up with the current technology,” he said. “The technology is changing so fast, our four-year-old laptops are becoming obsolete.” Viera principal Sarah Robinson praised Aiani for his ability to adapt to any situation. “James Aiani is an excellent representative of Viera High School as the Employee of the Year,” Robinson wrote in an email “Mr. Aiani can fix any technology issues that you can create. Students, staff,

… and they’re always going to be my kids. Forever. Once a Hawk, always a Hawk. And once my kid, always my kid. “They know that. They know I’ll go the extra mile for them.” Evans, who teaches Intensive Language Arts, has been at Viera since the school first opened in 2006. And for the first time in her career, she has been

named Viera’s Teacher of the Year. “Maryann is passionate about helping students be successful with literacy and preparing them for life after graduation,” Viera principal Sarah Robinson wrote in an email. “She is an inspiring Intensive Language Arts teacher and has a positive impact each and every day. “Ms. Evans is an example

of what a kind, giving, passionate, inspiring teacher is.” Instruction in Intensive Language Arts emphasizes reading comprehension, writing fluency and vocabulary study through the use of a variety of literary and informational texts encompassing a broad range of text structures, genres and levels of complexity Because her students come from a variety of backgrounds, Evans has to find a way to reach each one of them. To that end, she gives them a short survey at the beginning of the year to see what interests them, then meets with them individually. “If they’re into video games, well, I tell them I have my own game room,” she said. “I’m a gamer myself. We can connect that way. If you’re into science, I talk to them about science because I’m a big science head.” By finding that connection, Evans can then devise a plan that will not only help them graduate high school, but prepare them for college and beyond. “Sometimes these kids will be invisible to other people,” she said. “I make them visible. You just have to talk to them and be real with them. “One of the first things I do with them is lay down a path. I ask, ‘what do you want to be when you get out of here?’ We talk to each other. If they want to be an

parents, and our community are impacted by Mr. Aiani. He is quick, efficient, helpful, and always is able to problem solve and assist. “In a year in which we are embracing blended learning and additional technology challenges, Mr. Aiani has stepped up and gone above and beyond to support our staff.” Getting a chance to do what he loves and to be able to do it at the same place where he once roamed the halls as a student has turned into an ideal situation for Aiani. “I love it,” he said. “I love coming to work every day. I love the Viera culture. We’re one big family there.” V V

‘Inspiring’ Evans named Viera High Teacher of the Year BY CARL KOTALA

Maryann Evans doesn’t consider the people walking into her Viera High School classroom to be just students. And they’re certainly not just a number or a warm body filling a seat. “When you come into my class, you’re my family,” Evans said. “They’re my kids

engineer, here’s what you need to do to be an engineer. Let’s lay a pathway to engineering.” In addition to teaching for the past 25 years — 17 of them in Brevard County — the 55-year-old Evans also is active in the community. She is the sponsor of Viera High’s Environmental Club; a volunteer for the Monarch Watch Organization; a Skywarn spotter for the National Weather Service; a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and the leader of the Charismatic Prayer Group at St. John the Evangelist Catholic community. Being named Viera’s Teacher of the Year is quite an honor. “It’s amazing,” she said. “I’m blessed with all of my colleagues, my family of Hawks. I’m humbled.” V V

day. I’m the same way,” Tom Jones said. Both took an interest in learning this art about six years ago. YouTube tutorials helped her learn how to make the jewelry designs. As she practiced the craft, she learned. She teaches the technique in classes at the gallery. “We learn from one another. That’s why the gallery’s so good,” Kathee Jones said. Their advice for those who want to learn jewelry design: Find a good mentor, be open to feedback and patience is key. “Everybody wants to be the best right away, but it takes time,” Tom Jones said. One of Jones’ students, Teri Mahnken, said that, prepandemic, she was looking to learn something different, and Jones' classes were a perfect fit. “I like to work with

beads and cabochon,” said Mahnken, a resident of Indian Harbour Beach. Cabochon is an undrilled stone — rounded on one side and flat on the reverse. The process “was intimidating at first. Then you feel you’ve accomplished something when you’re done,” said Mahnken, who already has sold some of the pieces she’s made in class. Tom Jones is working on wire trees. He joked that these trees are more lowmaintenance than bonsai trees, as his creations don’t grow or require watering. For Kathee Jones, she’s designing greeting cards as well as earrings for the holidays. “I have always had the soul of an artist. My creations pour out of me in many forms. I write. I paint. I take photos and I design jewelry,” Kathee Jones said. V V

Charm of old shacks, nautical scenes intrigue watercolorist Ed Carlson BY JUDY BERMAN Watercolorist Ed Carlson is captivated by the sight of weathered and worn shacks on the coastal waters. He’s done a few snow scenes, too, portraying his upbringing in upstate New York and Indiana. “I paint what I want to do and where I want to live and spend my time,” Carlson said. Painting modern structures where everything is horizontal and perfectly vertical holds no appeal for him. He loves painting the charming old fishing shacks with their weathered wood. “Depending on the time of day and the way the light is catching it, it has grays and silvers and purples in it when you look at it a different way. That’s the way I paint them,” Carlson said. If you can’t paint a straight line, he joked, those are the kind of things you want to paint. “You want to paint a roof that looks like it’s about ready to collapse,” the Satellite Beach resident said. As a sailor, he loves cruising the waterways with his wife, Pat, and being on the lookout for those quiet moments of nautical scenes and tropical beauty. His paintings, “Trout for Breakfast” and “Early Morning Angler,” reflect his passion and are among his paintings on display at the Art Gallery of Viera in The Avenue. “Early Morning Angler”

began as a theme for an art workshop he did. He gave those in his class a 1-inch hardware brush, which is very coarse and the hairs are far apart. “I said ‘we’re going to do this entire painting with this, and we got these really wild effects. We splattered the whole painting,” Carlson said. Tom Jones, a watercolorist who has instructed Carlson, had encouraged Carlson to teach art. Jones said Carlson is a “natural talent with passion.” “What Ed tells his students is: ‘You have to remain a child when painting.’” “When you see a child painting, in their minds, they’re playing. It’s important to learn to play

again. You’ll be much freer in your work,” Jones said. In one class, a student questioned why another student’s painting was so much better than her own. That’s a land mine no

Artistic opportunity evolves from AvantMask contest BY GEORGE WHITE Masks and facial coverings have become a necessary but fashionable part of life, providing a new option for artistic expression celebrated in the Art Gallery of Viera’s AvantMask competition ending Oct. 9. Masks carry with them a mixed bag of emotions, some unpleasant, according to the AGOV website open call for submissions.

VIERA VOICE George White

Jaime Meagher was the head judge.

“They can be looked at as hope, safety and also a reminder of the pain and suffering happening all around us," Adam Palumbo said. They can bring feelings of security and at times discomfort. AvantMask is an opportunity to share those very feelings.” AvantMask is not intended to create masks for actual safety or everyday use but to evolve the idea of a mask into a work of art. The range of emotion related to masks was reflected in the variety of allowed mediums used for the AvantMasks, including adding accessories and using unique materials. “Whether it's leather, silk, chains or fabric just make it exciting, thought provoking and wearable," Palumbo

said. "Wood, twine, rope or any other material you can imagine can be used to produce your Avant-guard mask.” AvantMask was not intended to create masks for actual safety or everyday use but to evolve the idea of a mask into a work of art. That wide-open description yielded pleasant creative surprises for the finals, said judge Jamie Meagher, the longtime curator for Pizza Gallery. He said the idea for the contest was spurred by the times we live in. “That’s why I like this type of open form because it doesn’t limit the artist into one particular style and allows them to have their own interpretation,’’ Meagher said. The most prolific entrant, with a total of 11 mostly architectural masks, including the winning submission of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was professional designer Janna Kennedy of St. Petersburg, who was born and raised in the Melbourne area. “One of the criteria was for the mask to tell a story and hers was the most relevant and timely,’’ Meagher said. The second place mask woven from blue cotton cord called “Blue Plague” offered a visual reference of the longnosed masks used to treat patients during the Black Plague. Artist Nancy Bindig of Merritt Island started a couple of other submissions using papier-mache, but returned to her favorite medium of basketry, in which she has a Masters of Fine Arts. “I went back to what I know,’’ she said. AvantMask winner, now an accomplished designer, has local roots BY GEORGE WHITE Winning the AvantMask competition at the Art Gallery of Viera with her timely Ruth Bader Ginsburg entry — and submitting a total of 11 masks for the contest — was natural for Brevard County native and accomplished professional designer Janna Kennedy, who now resides in St. Petersburg. The 3D mask design shows the tiny statured Ginsburg standing as a symbolic pillar of the U.S. Supreme Court with graffiti lettering “Notorious RBG” on the columns. “It was meant to show how towering she was,’’ Kennedy said. Her second favorite art mask? An upside down bat. As a child growing up in Melbourne, her mother encouraged Kennedy to draw and color and taught her how to sew, beginning a lifelong love affair with drawing, painting and sewing fabrics for costuming. The Melbourne High School graduate (1974) attended Brevard Community College. Her first job was as a portrait artist for the summer at Six Flags over Georgia. Later,

She spent several years painting sets for the Asolo State Theater — FSU’s graduate acting conservatory. In 1984, she moved to New York City to the historic neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. In the mid-1990s, she created a nonprofit mini-theater company called Halloween 313. This community-based organization produced 23 years of live Halloween shows on her front lawn in

Clinton Hill. And along the way, she created programs for Disneyland Paris and The Disney Catalog and frequently traveled internationally for research. After 25 years in New York City, Kennedy moved back to her home state to work as a designer in St. Petersburg’s Artist Enclave of Historic Kenwood, a small-scale home business supporting the visual, performing and cultural arts while maintaining the historic residential character. Mask makers expand to help their communities and beyond BY GRACE ROGERS In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, people are finding new ways to use their skills to help those in need. Project Linus, a non-profit organization that makes blankets for children in crisis, decided to expand its reach. Since starting out by making 250 masks for a senior living facility, Project Linus has gained more than 500 volunteers in Brevard County within the first month through Facebook. Now it is making thousands. Jill Blue, publisher of Viera Voice and Senior Life, contacted their organization to acquire masks for complimentary senior COVID-19 PPE kits. They responded by donating 800 masks for the Senior Life Drive-Thru Senior Expo. Everyone involved donates their time, effort

and supplies, as well as hand delivering the masks to their destination. The masks are made to help anyone in need, from healthcare workers and their patients, the elderly and children returning to school. Project Linus coordinator Mary Ann Laverty and the rest of her team have been so grateful for all the support and positive responses from the community and those who received masks. Even some recipients have joined the cause. “Like everyone, I didn’t know how long and how serious the virus was gonna be,” Laverty said. With more than 7,000 masks given to schools and 4,000 to cancer patients, Project Linus volunteers estimate they have made more than 30,000 masks, with more to come. helping another group of people” Laverty said. “I just want to thank everyone who has helped so long. So thankful for them and appreciate all their effort.” Other groups and individuals also have been making masks to help their community. Brevard Mask Makers, or Masketeers as they’re known, started their endeavor in March by giving to medical facilities. The effort quickly expanded to several hundred volunteers. “I want to do what I can for the community,” said Deb Shirley, one of the Masketeer members. The group has made more than 26,000 masks since August and plan to keep going. Their efforts are not for profit, with the volunteers generously giving their time

and materials. They said everyone who has received masks, ranging from schools to hospitals, has been very grateful. “It feels like I have been able to do something,” Shirley said. “It has brought me such joy.” Another pair of mask makers have expanded their reach beyond their local community. Viera resident Tim McFadden, along with his wife Wendy, have been sharing their masks worldwide. With a desire to help others wherever the need arose, the McFadden family has sent out more than 900 masks. From the U.S. Marine Corps in Okinawa, to the U.S. Air Force Base and schools in Yokota, Japan, and a Marine base in Spain,

the McFadden’s masks have served many. They also have shipped masks to England, to a resource association for female law enforcers in California, and both the fire department and police department in West New York, New Jersey. “The gift is in the giving,” Wendy McFadden said. They have received overwhelming expressions of thanks from their recipients. They also plan to make special Christmas masks in the coming months. “It’s giving us focus and something to do,” Tim McFadden said. All the McFadden’s masks are notfor-profit and come in a wide range of designs. V V

ALDI brings career opportunities to Suntree this spring BY WENDY SCHEURING

New construction at the Promenade Shoppes of Suntree has been busily underway the past few weeks. Last February, the plaza, located at 6451 N. Wickham Road, underwent a major overhaul when its northern half was cleared to make room for new construction of an ALDI grocery store. The framework of the building, with its prominent storefront design, officially announces a soon-to-be ALDI presence in Suntree. David Moreton of R.A. Rogers Construction Company is project manager for the new construction. “We are excited to confirm that construction is underway for the new Melbourne store, which will now open next year,” Rachel Fuchs, associate for media relations for ALDI, wrote in an email. “We look forward to expanding our footprint in the area in 2021.” “Construction should be

AVEDA LOVE IS IN THE PRESENT is about the gift of unconditional love - with every detail considered. These gifts are wrapped in love, wrapped in chic and the inimitable touch of thoughtful gifting. From hair care to self-care, each gift is abundant with love from plant to person.

ALDI will bring more traffic. “We’re excited,” Storms said. “We think it’s going to be great for business.” “It’s going up quick,” she added. “Originally, I heard it would be finished by March. If they have good weather, it will probably be before that.” The layout of the Suntree store will be similar to other stores since ALDI wants its customers to feel like they are shopping at their local store, Fuchs said, A typical store is approximately 12,000 square feet of retail space with four to six aisles. The new ALDI also will bring job opportunities to the Suntree area. “Each store, including our new Melbourne store, will employ about 15, 20 people,”

Fuchs wrote. According to the ALDI website, there are positions for full-time store manager, full-time associate, and parttime cashiers and stockers. The starting pay is $13.10 per hour for associates, cashiers and stockers, and $20 per hour for managers. A high school diploma or GED is preferred for associate, cashier and stocking positions. A managerial position requires a high school diploma, as well as retail experience. Suntree ALDI employees will work at nearby ALDI stores until the new store is ready to open. The Blake at Viera assisted living and memory care coming soon BY GEORGE WHITE The Blake at Viera, a retirement and assisted living facility with memory care, will provide a new high-end choice in an area chosen for being attractive to relatives and friends visiting their loved ones. To be located on a fiveacre lot adjacent to the new traffic circle at Lake Andrew Drive and Porada Drive, The Blake at Viera will feature 68 assisted living units and 33 memory care units and will employ about 60 staff members. Groundbreaking is expected in the fourth quarter of 2020 with construction to take about 14 months, said Scott Creason, director of new development for Blake Management Group (BMG). It manages 17 communities in seven states that are either under construction or in operation. Owner and developer, Cardinal Ventures, which also has a West Orlando site underway, wants to expand in the Viera area as part of a Central Florida expansion initiative. Blake communities are currently located in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. “We typically look for planned mixed-used traditional neighborhood developments. Pineda bridge over railroad tracks will improve traffic flow BY GEORGE WHITE Completion of the overpass above the Florida East Coast Railway tracks at the Pineda Causeway is slated for December but, considering normal delays and COVID-19related challenges, county officials are reluctant to name an exact end date for the $24 million Major General John Cleland Memorial Bridge funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.

“Suffice to say, we have had to push this back a couple of dates already, and we’re hoping to avoid any additional delays." — Don Walker

“Suffice to say, we have had to push this back a couple of dates already, and we’re hoping to avoid any additional delays,’’ said county spokesman Don

24

Walker, who helped organize a Sept. 26 dedication ceremony, which was originally planned for the completion. It was held early to include family and friends of Cleland, of Viera, who passed away in 2017 at age 92. Once completed, the four-lane span will elevate motorists approximately 24 feet above the railroad tracks west of U.S. 1 and near Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, which has its own traffic signal. It should improve regular traffic flow, currently at 33,000 vehicles per day, off the barrier islands because there is no longer a need to stop for trains, now averaging 14 freight trains a day with expectation for at least 10 more commuter trains daily in 2022. The overpass was required by the FEC Railway at the time of the Pineda extension and widening to Interstate 95. It was a condition to granting the county permission to widen the crossing from two to four lanes, earlier said Georganna Gillette, the executive director of the Space Coast Transportation

Facility in that it provides direct access to the Patrick Air Force Base’s southern gate on State Road 404 at South Patrick Drive, she said. The original planning for the bridge project occurred prior to the announcement of Brightline’s desire to

operate more trains through Brevard County. “So, the benefit of the overpass is even greater than before, considering the future increase in passenger and freight traffic,’’ Gillette said. V V

Retirement life is golden at new Sonata East BY MARIA SONNENBERG Multiple gourmet dining venues. Wine bar. Terraces. Theater. Varied entertainment options. Fishing pier. Technology lab. Award-winning golf course nearby. That tempting combination of amenities, and more, will be available to the active senior residents of the new resort-style Sonata East at Viera, adjacent to Sonata Viera. Even though the luxury facility is slated to open in late summer or early fall of 2021, interest in reserving one of the 88 well-appointed apartment homes has been brisk since the complex, which also includes 30 Serenades memory care units, recently started accepting reservations at its newly opened Leasing Center. The new community, located at 4206 Breslay Drive, dovetails with the neighboring Sonata Viera to encompass everything residents will want or need at different stages of their lives. “The expansion allows us to create a full continuum of care all on one campus; providing all residents the perfect lifestyle regardless of their needs with independent living, assisted living and memory care,” said Shelley Esden, the chief operating officer of parent company Sonata Senior Living, based in Central Florida and operating exclusively in the state. Sonata East’s design has even taken into account lessons learned from the pandemic. “Sonata East at Viera has intentionally created a master design that will include many safety and technology features that have been developed through what COVID and quarantine has taught us,” said Bridget Perers, the regional director of business development. Additional features will

ensure residents can remain socially connected to their friends and family. “The newest innovations in safety and technology have been thoughtfully integrated into the design of Sonata East at Viera and to promote the independence, health, connectivity and wellness of our residents,” Esden added. Galligan Dental. “I care about my patients, value their time and treat them like family,” Galligan said. She offers digital and low-radiation X-rays, digital televisions in exam rooms and calming additions such as low lighting, blankets and pillows, stress balls and aroma therapy.

“I care about my patients, value their time and treat them like family.” — Dr. Kristina Galligan “I want to build longlasting relationships by developing trust and providing extraordinary care.” She moved to be closer to family, although she was born and raised in Florida.

Galligan, 33, has served Brevard County in Palm Bay for six years and decided to open her solo practice at 7954 North Wickham Road. Open for two months and already boasting 125 patients, a ribbon-cutting was held Oct. 14 with more than 70 people attending. Guests included several fellow Suntree dental practitioners. “It’s a big achievement to open your own office,” Dr. Andrew Langston said. The oral surgeon moved two years ago to an office nearly across Wickham Road. “If I have a patient without a general dentist, I’ll refer them to her, and I can do implants for her patients,” he said. Dr. Carl Jones, an orthodontist at the nearby Brevard Orthodontics, said he’s pleased to have another dental office nearby. “I’m glad to see a new business coming in here. I think it’s the first since the pandemic

started,” he said. He works with Galligan’s patients who need root canals. Jones said the new office is “well thought out.” The 1,750 square feet includes a reception area, four examination rooms, an operating area, offices, and a sanitation/medication room. The practice has a front office lead and dental assistant. Galligan and her husband Tim have three children — James, 5; Katherine, 2 and Olivia, nine months. Born in St. Augustine and raised in Jupiter, she is an alumna of the University of Central Florida and Nova Southeastern University College of Dentistry. Her son James, Galligan said, loves her new office. “He wants a cleaning every day,” she said, laughing, ruffling his hair. For more information go to galligandental.com. VV

Nelson’s oil paintings illustrate Alexander’s poem that brings to life the struggles of African Americans and celebrates their many achievements throughout our country’s history. Kadir Nelson grew up in New Jersey and San Diego, where he started drawing when he was just 3 years old. Today, he mostly uses oil paints to create his images. Nelson, who is 44, lives in Los Angeles. He told a reporter that Alexander’s poem “really spoke to me. ... I have to step into the shoes of whoever I’m portraying” and create art that honors those people.

The 2020 winner of the John Newbery Medal, awarded to an author for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children, is “New Kid” by Jerry Craft. He is also the illustrator of the graphic novel. “New Kid” also won this year’s Coretta Scott King Author Book Award, which recognizes an African American author of outstanding books for children and young adults. Craft’s main character, Jordan, has left his neighborhood school to attend a challenging private school. But between his old friends and his new classmates, he doesn’t really feel as if he fits in anywhere. Jerry Craft has published many books as an author and illustrator. He’s also the creator of a syndicated comic strip, Jerry Craft “Mama’s Boyz,” that appeared in newspapers from 1995 to 2013. “I wanted to give 10-year-old Jerry Craft a book he could read and say was his own,” Craft told a reporter. “The things I had to read in school couldn’t have been further from my life.”

Bath, home safety emphasized in approach of new business BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

Realizing a need for easily obtainable household grab bars, Michael Childs created his LLC and began a business under that umbrella called Same Day Grab Bars. Now he is called “a godsend, he says with a chuckle. “I started the business on Jan. 1, this year. The number one thing people tell me is ‘you are a godsend,’ because they couldn’t find anyone who wanted to do it. We have been really busy even with COVID-19. “The same day premise of the business is that they are installed easily, you don’t have to order online and we have 75 to 80 grab bars on the truck. The more you buy, the more discount. (There’s a) free estimate on

site before we start and it is easy to do them, Childs said. “We are usually in and out of your life in an hour and a half.

"The number one thing people tell me is ‘you are a godsend,’ because they couldn’t find anyone who wanted to do it." — Michael Childs

What makes the service different is the ease of order and service. Call the customer number, schedule an appointment and the rest remains up to Same Day Grab Bars. “The installer will do a safety evaluation, offer

suggestions and discuss placement based on your needs, Childs says. “We show up and do our job all in one visit convenience. “We have every color and option under the sun and carry satin smooth and textured stainless finishes. Either one works; some people just like the texture of the smooth bar and how it feels. But the bars don’t stop at just stainless or just for the bathroom. Bars are smooth, peened, knurled or a ‘Sure Grip’ texture. They come in stainless or mat finishes, white, bisque, brass or black and everything from straight bars to something curved with design or featuring a shampoo caddy, soap dish or towel bar addition. Call 321-393-3000 or 800-215-7560 or go to SameDayGrabBars.com. VV

Here are some quotes for example. “Don’t think of it as hot flashes. Think of it as your inner child playing with matches. Or how about, “At my age, the only way to be smokin’ hot is to get cremated. Then there’s this one, “The last guy that kept me up all night was Mr.

Why muck is a bad thing and what to do about it

What is Muck? It’s the black mayonnaise that covers the bottom of much of the Indian River Lagoon. It smothers seagrass, clams and other bottom dwellers. Lying there, it produces a flux accounting for nearly 25 percent of the nitrogen and phosphorous feeding algae blooms each year. It’s bad. How did it get there? Muck is the accumulated goo from our development through the past 50 years.

It's made up of whatever has been dumped or washed into the Indian River Lagoon — utility wastewater (now prohibited) and septic system leakage; silt and clay from construction and sod; organic

It is the weekend and relaxing is in order: home bathroom is the place; full self-pampering is the game. Armed with some fragrant shampoo, coarse body scrub, anti-stress body wash and facial exfoliating cream, the process begins. It might come as a surprise, but these products can contain a hidden ingredient harmful to the environment — microbeads. According to beatthemicrobead.org, “Microbeads are a kind of microplastic with specific function for scrubbing or exfoliating. In cosmetics, microplastic refers to all types of tiny plastic particles (smaller than 5 mm) that

are intentionally added to cosmetics and personal care products. They are often used as emulsifying agents or just as cheap fillers.” Microplastics can be identified by many different unpronounceable names. Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP), Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Nylon (PA), Polyurethane, and Acrylates Copolymer are some of them according to beatthemicrobead.org guideto-microplastics. Wash them off and there they go, down the drain mixed with the clean water that comes into the bathroom straight from our public water system,

matter, grass clippings and leaves; the accumulated dirt and deposits on streets, roofs and driveways. What are we doing about it? We have really begun to clean up this residual mess. A number of important projects are underway. Some have been completed and most are summarized in the county’s Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) plan. The most obvious are the muck dredging projects,

where thousands of tons of muck are removed from the bottom by suction dredges. The muck is pumped to sites where the water is extracted, treated and returned to the Indian River Lagoon, and the solids are dried and disposed of in suitable landfills. Dredging projects have been completed or are in process at Sykes Creek, Cocoa Beach, Eau Gallie, Turkey Creek, Grand Canal and Mims. Other SOIRL projects such as baffle boxes, retention

ponds, the conversion of septic systems to sewerage treatment and the planting of native vegetation are reducing the buildup of muck. One very important step was taken in the late 1990s when Clean Water Act enforcement required wastewater utilities to stop dumping effluent into the Indian River Lagoon. For a summary of projects completed, go to preview. tinyurl.com/y5ljlem2 VV

designed to treat organic materials, not hazardous chemicals or very tiny pieces of plastic — in other words, microplastics cannot be removed from the water through a common treatment process. Once the wastewater arrives at the treatment plant, the plant cleans the water using various techniques to remove and reduce pollutants. Microplastics travel from tank to tank through filters all the way through pipes and, with the treated water, they flow back to a local water body. Anything that the treatment plant cannot remove from the water through the cleaning process will remain in the water and that is the water released into local waterways to be used again for any number of purposes, such as supplying drinking water, irrigating crops and sustaining aquatic

life, according to epa.gov/ npdes/pubs/centralized_ brochure.pdf. Materials that are small enough to go through undetected will circulate over and over again in our waters, accumulating in the water with other materials added in the next trip around. To protect the quality of our waters, it is important to stop the influx of those materials at the source. Microplastic-free water begins at the shop. When you select the products you purchase, check if they include microplastics as one of their ingredients by searching the product or brand at beatthemicrobead. org/product-lists. If they do, you can break the cycle and shorten the microplastic voyage by leaving that product on the shelf and switching to one with zero plastic inside. To top it off, flowerscented body lotion and spring-scented antiperspirant deodorant, which will go down the drain in the next shower, and minty toothpaste – aahhh …. What a treat! Any residue of product on our skin and in our hair and basically anything that is washed down the drains or flushed will travel through the pipes of our sewer system to a wastewater treatment plant. Pumpkin Patch focuses on charities with fall fun SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE Despite obstacles with COVID-19 and the worldwide pandemic, the Church at Viera held its annual Pumpkin Patch during the month of October. Children and adults enjoyed the local fundraiser, which helped local families in Brevard County and global partners in Costa Rica, Haiti, Peru and India. There’s nothing like pumpkins and pumpkin pie to bring on the flavor of fall and autumn fun.

The Pumpkin Patch was held from Oct. 11 to 31. It was open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday during that span and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday during that time period. Volunteers helped set up the event, unload pumpkins, operate the facility during the three-week period and clean up the event the day after Halloween. For information, call 321-259-3454 or go to churchatviera.com/events/ pumpkin-patch. V V

Spinning tales about tracking devices for wild animals, vertebrates and invertebrates are vital to the planet. To ensure their survival, various devices are placed on these creatures to obtain and analyze invaluable information on habitat, movement, migration, mortality and more. The great white shark, for example, is an indicator of ocean health since it can can be tracked by a SPOT (smart position or temperature) tag mounted on the first dorsal fin. It is painless since a fin lacks nerve supply; transmissions to the satellite occur when the shark’s fin breaks the surface. Another device is an acoustic tag which is surgically implanted in the stomach; the transmitter emits ultrasonic pings to a receiver on the ocean floor. A dart acoustic tag, less disturbing to apply, often is installed on the easily stressed hammerhead shark. The baleen whale, a mammal as well as an indicator of ocean health, can be tagged with a noninvasive, short-term (24 hours) archival tag. The device has a suction cup, which is positioned at the end of a long stick in order to place it on the back of the whale when it is napping or eating at the surface. An accelerometer records data; the tag falls off and is retrieved and reused. The bear, a necessary predator and maintainer of ecosystems, can display a plastic tag in both ears; color usually provides identification or represents the year tagged. Often, a collar which emits signals — radio telemetry — is attached to the sometimes anesthetized bear. Monitoring occurs from the ground or air. This device initially brought awareness of the threatened grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park. The remote polar bear is surveyed with satellite/ GPS (global positioning system) telemetry. The honeybee, an insect, is the essential pollinator.

The RFID (radio frequency identification) tag is used to track the bee’s activities. With forceps, it is glued on the thorax (midsection) of the chilled bee — like a backpack. Retrieved information helps farmers attract honeybees. RFID is similarly used for electronic highway toll collection. The butterfly, another insect, likewise pollinates. The monarch is famous for its seasonal migration and is tagged to follow its journey from original capture to the point of recovery. By gently pinching the head, a small sticker tag is applied to the large discal cell on the underside of the hindwing. Flight is not hindered. The bird, an essential wildflower pollinator, is sometimes banded (ringed) for identification by the placement of a small numbered metal or plastic ring attached to the leg; a plastic wing tag is placed on a larger bird. A golden eagle can wear a GPS transmitter strapped like a backpack to study migration. Undeniably, improperly placed devices can falsify information, impair movement, induce infection and even cause death. However, researchers strive for the absolute safety of any animal — whether placing a radioactive tag on a mole, injecting a PIT (passive integrated transponder) in a snake cavity or gluing a PIT on a mussel shell. Sadly, poachers, hunters or fishermen pursue signals transmitted from tagged creatures. Despite these transgressions, researchers save many animals by tracking. Conservation of wild animals through acquired data ensures that they will continue to sustain ecosystems and thus sustain the planet. VV
