Dave Head is more than the director of sales at Head Contract Solutions. He helped raise more than $10,000 for Viera Suntree Little League in 2011, is the Chief Umpire at VSLL, District 2 Umpire Consultant, Southeast Region Little League Umpire Instructor, and has been selected to Umpire in the Little League - Junior League Division World Series. When to call your association’s property management
Association Living By Frank Kneiser CMCA, AMS, PCAM
If your association utilizes a management company or has an on-site management office, you may sometimes wonder when it is OK to call the office. Alternatively, some owners may hesitate to call the office because they think their question is not pertinent. The easy answer is, if your question directly relates to the association or your residence, feel free to call. Some managers or management companies only want to hear from you if this is the case. Their reasoning is they would like, to eliminate calls, like “My oven does not get hot enough to bake a cake,” or, “Call the police. Someone’s breaking into
my home,” or even, “My dog won’t go outside.” These are some examples of actual calls I’ve received over the years. Our office, and the offices of good managers and management companies, will answer most questions regarding the community. Sometimes I refer to us as similar to the library’s reference department, just not to the same depth. We maintain a directory of contact information for many area services such as utilities, county offices, schools, etc., so we can answer owners’ questions when they call. Usually there will be someone in the management office who will know the

answer to your question or will guide you to the answer. If you’d like to speak directly to the manager, the best time to call is first thing in the morning. Remember that your manager’s office is a place of business and not the community center. Managers will normally be happy to exchange pleasantries and chat. It is difficult for employees to carry out their responsibilities during prolonged visits. In addition, your manager will not routinely become involved in neighbor-to-neighbor issues. The only exception to this would be when a violation of your documents may be involved.

Junior R.O.T.C. Ball a great success at Indian River Colony Club By Rosemary H. Lynn
The second annual Viera High School’s Junior Reserved Officers Training Corps ball was held at the Indian River Colony Club in Viera on the evening of Friday, Jan. 27, 2012. More than 200 members, along with their dates and other officials, attended the event that began with a receiving line greeting each person individually at 6:30 p.m. A dinner was served to the crowd at 7 p.m., followed by the color guard presenting flags. The key speaker was Lt. Col. Timothy R. Thomas (retired), the Senior Army Instructor at Viera High School. He spoke with pride about the JROTC team at m the school as it is the largest program of its kind in the local area. The purpose of the ball is to teach life skills the corps members may need later in life as well as to offer a fun event. These skills include dressing for a special occasion, table manners, responding to invitations and behaving appropriately at a formal gathering. Also, it is a good venue for students and instructors to intermingle in a non-academic setting. After dinner and speeches were complete, the color guard returned the flags to the back of the room and the DJ began playing music. Line dancing and rock and roll brought the crowd to its feet where many enjoyed dancing until 11 p.m. The hall is part of the Indian River Colony Club and was decorated with balloons and flowers donated for the event by Terry Black at Magic Dove Flower Stop in Viera. Jodi Bradley, chairperson of the ball, made sure that snacks and drinks were available during the event and kept smiles on everyone’s faces. VV

According to the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congress has commissioned gold medals (CGM) as its highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions since the American Revolution. Each medal honors a particular individual, institution, or event, such as the Tuskegee Experience. The first CGM recipients included citizens who participated in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. Congress later broadened the scope of the medal to include actors, authors, entertainers, musicians, pioneers in aeronautics and space, explorers, lifesavers, notables in science and medicine, athletes, humanitarians, public servants, and foreign recipients. All Congressional Gold Medal legislation must be cosponsored by at least 290 members of the Members of the House (two-thirds). Additionally, specific standards are set forth by the House Committee on Financial Services’s Subcommittee on Domestic Policy and Technology when considering such legislation. The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee
requires that at least 67 Senators must cosponsor any Congressional Gold Medal legislation before the committee will consider it. DOTAs, or Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen, were collectively, not individually, awarded the Congressional Gold Medal (CGM) by President George W. Bush and the U.S.
Congress on March 29, 2007 in a ceremony inside the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. The 300 airmen and widows who attended the ceremony received the CGM for all of the estimated 16,000-19,000 participants of the Tuskegee Experience. For more information on the Tuskegee Airmen, call 321-537-5002. VV

program includes balls that beep for sight-challenged players and other equipment to help these children enjoy the sport, too. League president Eric Power is a take charge kind of guy, knows most everyone, and learned at an early age, from his father, it’s all about giving back. A huge, season-opening weekend is planned for Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3. On Friday night, there will be a parade at Viera Regional Park, followed by a Pitch, Hit & Run contest for the players, loosely based on the football Punt, Pass & Kick, to increase enthusiasm for the season opening games on Saturday, March 3. The only thing little about The Viera-Suntree Little League is the players themselves. According to Eric Power, league president, there are 700 youngsters on 62 teams, backed by 180 coaches and more than 60 “team moms” who volunteer to keep this league one of the best in Florida, if not the nation. That seems to be the key - not just volunteers, but dedicated volunteers - to keep an organization of this size operating on a donated and fundraising budget of more than $200,000, year after year. About $90,000 is from registration fees, while $110,000 must be raised by various fundraisers, including discount card sales and donations from
businesses. The emphasis is on players, with teams of youngsters ranging in age from 4 to 16 that play on 11 baseball fields, including those at Viera Regional Park and near Suntree Elementary School. Teams currently have one to two practices per week, and during the season, two games per week. There are 14 T-ball teams, eight softball teams, and 36 baseball teams. Viera-Suntree Little League is part of a seven-team Florida District 2 area. The baseball diamonds, including concession stands, equipment, uniforms, etc., are all top-notch, which shows community support. The Viera-Suntree Little League also has a Challenger Program for disabled/ handicapped players. This

Mega-churches in the Viera/Suntree area can sometimes become victim of their own successes. Families can drift in and out of large congregations without taking root or connecting to fellow members. Suntree United Methodist Church (SUMC) takes steps to stay connected. The church held its third annual Suntree’s Got Talent on Friday night, Feb. 24, followed by an adult game night with child care provided on Saturday. The tandem events are the brain child of the church’s Children’s Advisory Board. “It’s very important to develop close friendships, so you feel you have others you
can talk to, share your heart with, lighten your sorrows, and expand your joys,” said Rick Jones, children’s pastor at SUMC and coordinator of the weekend’s activities. Clergy delivering helpful, compelling sermons that can be applied to a member’s life is vital, but is only one of the ingredients to a healthy worship environment, according to Jones. “They were looking for an event that would provide a loving environment for children where they could share their gifts and talents,” Jones said. Most of the talent acts were youthful, but there were adult entries as well. The same committee oversees Vacation Bible Study and MADD Camp (Music, Art,
Drama and Dance). Having additional opportunities for fellowship beyond an hour on Sunday mornings gives greater depth to one’s spiritual walk, according to Jones. “Doing things together on a regular basis, midweek, small group, special events, and on an individual, friendship basis with fellow church members allows you to surround yourself with like-minded folks,” Jones said. “You spend less time surrounded by negative influences of what can, at times, be an uncaring, cold world.” For more information on SUMC activities for children or families, call Jones at 321-242-2585, EXT 1126. Monday, Jan. 23, began with Pop Up Poets! Teachers and staff “popped up” in classrooms and read poetry to students through 6th grade. Tuesday and Thursday were spent with the entire school stopping at 9:15 a.m. to meet and read with book buddies at Suntree Elementary School. On Wednesday, some of the students and teachers dressed as a Wonderful Word. Some wore wordhats, others word-posters and some created elaborate costumes. Friday culminated with a favorite character dress-up day and students participated in a school-wide parade, sharing with other classes in the building. Three mornings during the week, an excerpt from a mystery book was read over the public address system and students raced to have their teachers email the correct title. Suntree students read a total of 40,700 minutes.
“This was above and beyond the usual, and did not include all the at-home reading,” said Suntree reading teacher Karla Skinner, who coordinated the school’s event with firstgrade teacher Eileen Ferland. The number contributed to the state’s 2012 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! Million Minute Marathon. “Students became interested in the books that their own peers recommended and are now excited to explore new authors based on the enthusiasm of other readers,” Ferland said. “Students enjoyed dressing up and sharing their books with each other.” First-grader Emily LaPorte said it was the most fun she’d had all year. “I can’t believe I got to dress up in a totally cool outfit and come to school,” said the young Pocahontas. Brevard Animal Services offers new “Pajama Pups” program
In an effort to improve the adoptability and well-being of dogs housed in Brevard County’s animal shelters, Brevard Animal Services & Enforcement is offering a new program called “Pajama Pups.” After completing a foster application, approved individuals will have the opportunity to host a shelter dog overnight, allowing the animal a chance to de-stress, unwind and socialize. Because dogs have little interaction with people after shelter hours, many of them can become depressed, withdrawn, or excitable. The Pajama Pups program enables the dogs to eat and sleep better, and may reduce stress, disease, and behavior changes. It also gives a potential adopter an opportunity to find a forever friend. VV

If there is one thing Viera High tennis coaches Amber Leaman and Traci Stiffler don’t lack, it’s confidence in their teams’ abilities to contend for a Class 4A, District 9 championship. “We look like have a really strong team this year,” Leaman said. “We’re ready to play.” Leaman’s boys’ team is led by four strong players — Kyle Logue, Tristan Mignogna, Ryan Coloñ and Ryan Garwood. The Hawks, who opened their season Feb. 7, will be the only Brevard County team competing in a new nineteam district that includes teams from Centennial (Port
St. Lucie), Dwyer (Palm Beach Gardens), Jupiter, Fort Pierce Central, Palm Beach Gardens, Royal Palm Beach, Treasure Coast (Port St. Lucie) and Vero Beach. Both Viera teams have made the state regional playoffs in each of the past four years while playing in both class 2A and 3A. This is Viera’s first season playing in 4A. Asked what she likes about her team, Leaman said, “They’re hardworking, they’re dedicated, very knowledgeable and open to new ideas, new workouts. They’ve been doing more conditioning than in the past. There’s lots of room for growth.” On the girls’ side, Stiffler
has a roster that includes only 11 players, but seven of them are returners. Leading the way are last year’s top two players — Stephanie Hatchett, and her twin sister Dana. “They’re technically sound,” Stiffler said. “They’re strong, all-around players.” Other key players include Tori Pinchera and Katie Roslonowski. Like Leaman, Stiffler believes her girls’ team is not only quite capable of challenging for the district title this season, but perhaps for years to come as well. “I like that we’re still a young team,” Stiffler said. “We don’t have any seniors. We have a very successful team from last year returning.” VV

Viera girls score first district soccer title By Carl Kotala
Ultimately, the Viera High School girls’ soccer season ended with yet another loss to Melbourne in the Class 4A regional semifinals. But this isn’t the same old story about how the Hawks can never seem to get over the hump against their arch rivals. Because just a week before, it was the Hawks who scored a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs to win the Class 4A, District
13 championship — the first district title in school history. “It was awesome,” Hawks’ coach Steve Richards wrote in an email. “The two teams are so close in talent; it is always going to be won by 1 goal or a mistake.” Kaelynne Mills scored the only goal in that district win with goalkeeper Sami Lewin getting the shutout. The victory ended a 10game losing streak against
Melbourne for Viera, which was missing seven players due to various injuries. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Melbourne would get revenge by a 1-0 score eight days later in the Class 4A regional semifinals. Despite that loss, Viera can take great pride in the fact that it was finally able to breakthrough against Melbourne in what has become one of the county’s best rivalries.

The Hawks finished the season with a 17-2-2 record. Mariah Lewis ended up as the team’s top scorer with 17 goals, followed by Joy Wilkinson (12 goals, 13 assists), Mady Nagy (11 goals, seven assists), Eva Banton (11 goals) and Olivia Thompson (10 goals, seven assists). Lewin had nine shutouts. Though the Hawks will lose several key players
to graduation, they have a chance to be very strong again next season once their injured players return to the pitch. “Next year should be exciting,” Richards wrote. “With all those talented players back and the solid defense (Viera) will be (a) force to be reckoned with.” VV

Viera lacrosse program comes together
Viera track team’s a young, but talented bunch By Carl Kotala
If the Viera High boys and girls track teams were to create a marketing slogan for this season, it might read something like this: Viera Track … young, but talented. “We lost a lot of boys to graduation,” Viera boys’ coach Dave Costello said. “We’re young,
Lake Brantley, Lake Howell, Lake Mary, Lyman, Seminole, Spruce Creek and University (Orange City). “We’re not familiar with the competition,” Costello said. “But I know it’s going to be really tough.” Like the boys’, Viera’s girls’ team will be relying on a number of younger players to help fill key
Those athletes include Fendi Johnson (4x400 relay, long jump, 200 meters); Hazel Lockard (300 hurdles, 4x400 relay, triple jump) and Vianca Alfonso, who set the school record in the shot put last season with a throw of 33-9. Jackie Stengel, Viera’s top sprinter and jumper, is hoping to be back from an injury in April.
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
The Viera Hawks fine tune their game during an intersquad scrimmage. After winning their first district title as a club team last season, the Hawks will now be part of the FHSAA. By Carl Kotala
There is reason for excitement around the Viera High boys’ lacrosse program. Not only do the Hawks have a solid core of returners from last year’s district championship team, but more importantly, they’re no longer classified as a club team. Viera is now part of the Florida High School Athletic Association. The Hawks will not only be able to play teams from around Brevard County – including private schools like Holy Trinity and MCC – but teams from Orlando as well. “We’ve got a big target on our back, that’s for sure, coming into FHSAA play,” coach Mark Lorusso said. “Holy Trinity and MCC, those guys have been around. I’m sure they’re going to want to defend their turf. I think both of those teams are going to be strong this year. They’re going to give us a fight. We’re looking forward to it. I’m sure they are.” YOUR BOOK S HERE! IE PART uet room Banq ts 75. sea

Members of St. Mary’s Cougar Creators, a rookie robotics team, astounded parents and coaches when they won an award for outstanding overall performance at a regional robotics competition on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. By Mary Brotherton
Six months after forming a team, St. Mary’s Cougar Creators earned an award for outstanding overall performance at a regional robotics competition. St. Mary’s is the only primary level Cambridge school in Brevard County. The fourth-graders, led by volunteer parent-coaches were Elaine Daffron, Tyrese Davis, Mason Day, Natalia Merheb, Noah Reneau and Alex Voll. They met twice weekly to prepare for the FIRST LEGO League regional tournament in February. Among the Cougar Creators’ competition were returning eighth-
graders with several years of experience. FIRST LEGO League is a robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds, designed “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” and has been encouraging and challenging children since 1998. Participants are given a real world problem and the teams with the best robotic solutions can qualify to compete at the World Festival in April. This year’s challenge was to explore the topic of food safety and examine the possible points of food contamination then find ways to prevent or combat them. The six students at St. Mary’s researched a
new operation to test for salmonella in peanut butter factories. They also built a LEGO Mindstorm robot to compete against other teams. Earlier in the season the team won an award for good sportsmanship and being respectful. “It was a wonderful experience to see our students grow throughout the season,” Coach Elaine Voll said. “I hope other parents are inspired to start teams next year. FLL is not just about building robots, it’s about molding kids into young adults who will one day go out into the world and make a significant impact.” For more information call 321-636-4208. VV
Silly Hat Day, held at Manatee Elementary School on Feb. 3, was the kick-off event for the school’s Loving Lungs for Life fundraiser. Children in all grades donned colorful and creative hats during school hours. Students, faculty and staff could donate $1 to wear a hat of their choosing for the day. Silly Hat Day is the first of several events to help Robyn DeKeyser, one of the school’s volunteers and the mother of two Manatee students. She needs a double lung transplant. Her insurance will cover approximately 80 percent of the costs but her family is still looking at costs of more than $150,000 to cover the basic
procedure, which costs around $700,000. The generosity of the donors was phenomenal and Silly Hat day raised $1,300 for DeKeyser. Manatee Elementary School will host two more spirit days. Wacky Wednesday will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 15 and Fancy Footwear will be held Feb. 29. Sunday, March 18 is Manatee Day at A.J.’s Candy Castle where 10 percent of all sales will be donated to Manatee Elementary to close out the Loving Lungs for Life fundraiser. For more information, please contact Susan Taylor, Manatee PTO president at 321-795-8621. VV

Cambridge in Brevard By Mary Brotherton
The name Cambridge has long been associated with learning in the United Kingdom. Brevard County Public Schools is associated with Cambridge University through a prestigious program offered to students at Rockledge, Eau Gallie, Heritage and Titusville high schools. Through the University of Cambridge AICE Program, high school students take courses and exams that are internationally recognized, giving them the opportunity to earn college credit. AICE is the Advanced International Certificate in Education program, part of the University of Cambridge’s International Examinations (CIE) program. This is an international, pre-university curriculum and examination system that stresses the value of broad and balanced study for students who can tailor their studies to their individual interests, abilities and future plans. This curriculum encourages independent research and investigation, initiative, creativity and the application of skills and
knowledge. Saint Mary’s Catholic School in Rockledge is the longest operating Catholic elementary and middle school in Brevard County and is newly recognized as a Cambridge International School. Also located in Rockledge, Kennedy Middle School offers a Cambridge Checkpoint program, as well. Rockledge High School is known for its challenging, accelerated curriculum that is based on Britain’s Advanced Subsidiary (AS) or Advanced (A) Level examinations. The four-year curriculum progresses from one to two years of preparatory classes to entrance in the AICE diploma program that signifies the successful completion of the AICE curriculum. In order to earn the AICE diploma a student must pass six international examinations spread across three areas — math and science, languages and arts and humanities. Students must pass at least one examination from each area and a total of six to earn the diploma. In addition to earning college credit for each
examination passed, students who have earned the diploma and have completed 100 community service hours will also automatically qualify for the Bright Futures Scholarship. Rockledge High School recently announced their students who earned Cambridge Scholar Awards. This is no small accomplishment when considering that the Cambridge Scholar Awards set standards for students who earned high marks on three International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams, three AS Level exams, or two A Level exams. In the case of the Cross Qualification Cambridge AS/A Level Award, students must qualify on one A Level plus one AS level exam in order to earn this award. In other words, the students who are Cambridge Diploma recipients are another example of what Brevard County has accomplished by offering such a prestigious curriculum. For more information, visit Cambridge University at cie. org.uk, get details at brevard. k12.fl.us or call RHS at 321636-3711. VV

Manatee Elementary hosts Second Annual Souper Bowl
VIERA VOICE Photo
Students bring non-perishable food to Manatee Elementary School prior to the 46th Super Bowl football game that was held Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, in support of their favorite team and to help those less fortunate. By Rosemary H. Lynn
Manatee Elementary School in Viera held its second annual Souper Bowl day. Students, parents and faculty brought nonperishable items such as canned goods and boxed items to place under the team banner they planned to root for during the Super Bowl on Feb. 4, 2012. The clear-cut winner for the Manatee Souper Bowl was the New York Giants. The annual Souper Bowl event teaches children the joy of helping others and learning about people who have less than they. The children brought in as much food as they could to donate for the event. All of the food collected for the event was donated to the House of Hope Food Bank of the Merritt Island First Baptist Church. VV

Johnson, general manager since 2008, oversaw a number of major projects including the restoration of the Viera East Golf Club greens in 2010. “The greens are already in pretty good shape for this time of year,’’ Buth said. The Viera East Golf Club is a Joe Lee designed 18-hole course, which Buth said is a popular destination for the golfing public including a regional draw. “We’re filling the golf course up so we obviously have to be doing something correct,’’ he said. We’ve been driving around Viera on our own looking for houses for sale between $200,000 to $300,000. There doesn’t seem to be as many “for sale” signs as this time last year. Are we correct? Yes! There are two things happening. First, many new home communities in Viera with homes in your price range are either sold out or almost completely sold out. There are also less re-sale homes on the market, compared to this time last year. What then happens in this “affordable price range” is that more buyers are looking at the same homes for sale and these homes are selling quickly to whomever puts an offer in first. The key is to be ready to visit these homes as they come on the market. You can tell me what type of home you are specifically looking for and I’ll be able to send you new listings which match your criteria, immediately upon them becoming available. Or, if you’re thinking of selling your home in this price point, it’s a great time to put it on the market!
A.
Q.
Grace, you talked about “home staging” in one of your columns. What does this mean and how do I stage my house before I put it up for sale? Home staging is analyzing and improving your current home’s overall look and appeal for a potential buyer. It includes the flow from room to room, how the contents are arranged, adding or taking away elements, or adding a “pop” of color to a room through accessories. And—you don’t have to spend any extra money as often, you or your realtor already have the elements you need. Make sure you choose a realtor with home staging expertise and you’ll see how a little staging goes such a long way in making your home look its best. I’d be happy to visit your home, at no obligation, and give you some easy staging tips. You’ll be surprised at how good your home can look and feel with just a few changes! Give me a call any time.

FEATURED COMMUNITY Colfax Landing is reminiscent of the “ideal American neighborhood”. With lovely tile-roofed homes lining the streets, families walking their dogs, kids riding their bikes and teenagers heading over to the near-by tennis courts, the energy and friendliness of this family community is palpable. The homes are set on 85-foot wide lots so there’s ample room for multiple bedrooms and baths with good-sized bonus and leisure rooms to meet any household’s needs, while preserving the “old-fashioned” feel of a close-knit neighborhood. An abundance of lakefront lots and curving streetscapes, make this gated community appealing in every way.

Viera doc celebrates 25 years Ho family behind eye doctor’s success By Linda Wiggins
Dr. Frederick Ho is celebrating 25 years of success as a noted Brevard ophthalmologist, nearly five of those most recent years at his Wickham Road practice in Viera, which now hosts his adjacent Atlantic Eye MD hospital dedicated to eye surgery. The path that led to the spacious, blue-trimmed yellow building and great success started half a world away. In addition to international professional acclaim and awards, that success extends to his private life, which includes Melbourne-born wife Laurie and their four young daughters, who attend Freedom 7 Elementary School. In 1949, China fell to communism, spelling doom for the Ho family until they could escape to the British colony of Hong Kong. Of meager family means, Ho and his siblings studied hard
for a shot at greater freedom and opportunities. He was awarded a scholarship to California Institute of Technology, where he came to study biology and science at age 18. He was later accepted to medical school, where he decided to focus on maintaining, improving and in many cases saving eye sight. “I am not sure why I wanted to pursue the area of vision,” Ho said. “Maybe it was because it was something that affected me at a young age, I don’t know, but I will tell you, when I am in a room full of ophthalmologists, nearly every one of them wears glasses like me.” Every immediate member of the Ho family eventually emigrated to the United States. China took control of Hong Kong in 1997. Ho moved his practice from Eau Gallie to Viera, an area that would continue to grow in his two demographics. One group is seniors, who keep his surgery busy with cataract removal and placement of

Words to Live by:
What can I do for others? Richard Rossell, a resident of Brevard County since 1979, was the assistant administrator of the county’s largest skilled nursing home, the senior regional marketing director for Shands Hospital Home Care Division and the regional director for Access Home Health/Gentiva Health Services. The founding board member for the Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation is currently the foundation’s business development director. He maintains an active Real Estate Associate’s license and says that it brings him great pleasure to have someone ask for his help and to be able to offer assistance.
His thoughts
What was your first job? In high school I worked as a sales clerk in an office supply store in Homestead, Fla.
What kind of car did you learn to drive in? A 1964 Ford convertible. What would you like to be doing right now if money were no object? Go on a cruise around the world. I have been on 14 cruises and they have been my favorite vacations. Who is your favorite author? One of my favorites is Stephen King.
Do you have any pet peeves? It really is annoying to me to see people talking on their cell phone in supermarkets. When you were a child what did you want to be when you grew up? A hotel proprietor. What can we always find in your refrigerator? Diet Dr. Pepper.

More than 2,000 people attended this themed expo.
What would your colleagues vote you most likely to do? No question, they would say that I help others.
Each year our sponsors help us create memorable events. Thank you sponsors!
What is one thing casual acquaintances might be surprised to learn about you? I was taken to school in a taxi from kindergarten through 8th grade.
What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done? At age 12, I was a passenger on a motorcycle going 100 miles per hour and I will never forget that thrill, even though I was scared.
Do you have a story to share about a celebrity you have met? When I was in high school, I met Betty White and her husband, Allen Ludden. I was in the audience of a game show they were on in Miami. I was told that I was picked from the audience to go backstage to meet them because I had a flat top haircut and white shoes . VV

Father/daughter dance at Quest By Rosemary H. Lynn
Quest Elementary School, in Viera, held its annual father/daughter dance on Friday evening, Feb. 10. A red carpet greeted guests as they entered the school. Pictures were taken at the beginning and during the event so everyone would have beautiful memoirs of their evening. Fathers and daughters dressed up to attend the affair that featured lively music and goodies to munch on. Little girls giggled and danced together when their fathers tired out and took a seat on the sidelines. Excitement grew as fathers were introduced to their daughters’ schoolmates and attending teachers. When asked why the dance was so special to her, Nivea Thompson said, “Because my daddy is so nice.” Asked what the best part of the event was, she was quick to answer, “Dancing is the best!” The turnout for the affair was phenomenal. At one point during the evening, it was standing-room-only on the dance floor. It was evident that the girls were thrilled to be at an event where they were the center of attention and all of the fathers present seemed proud to be there with them. Some of the fathers brought not only their own daughters, but friends of their daughters as well. One father said, “I told her how lucky she was to have parents who are interested in her school functions and participate in events such as this. A lot of kids don’t have anyone who really cares. It’s obvious that the fathers who are here tonight truly care about their children.” VV

Crested Caracara (Caracara cheriway)
The crested caracara, occasionally identified as the Mexican eagle, is a bird of prey from the falcon family. It is the most terrestrial bird in this group. Preferred locations are improved pasturelands and dry prairies with scattered cabbage palms. In the United States, it is found in Arizona, Texas and Florida. This raptor has been a threatened species in Florida since 1987; loss of habitat is a major factor. Presently, this state’s population is estimated at 300 non-breeding birds and an unknown number of breeding pairs.
Somewhat sluggish, it is not a fast aerial hunter; on the ground, it is an opportunistic feeder. Carrion and live prey, such as small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and insects, satisfy its ravenous appetite. Near the Viera Wetlands, this scavenger has been observed feeding on the carcasses of cattle, deer and feral hogs. Vultures often share its prey. This photo of two caracaras was taken at the Viera Wetlands. The adult on the right is darker than the juvenile on the left; when mature, both genders are similar in color. One can also

Enthusiastic activity directors discuss the students progress in the Movin’ and Groovin’ Walkathon event at Manatee Elementary in Viera on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012.
Fun fundraiser to further education
By rosemary H. Lynn
Viera Voice • March 2012
Manatee Elementary School sponsored a fun Movin’ and Groovin’ walkathon for all students on Thursday, Jan. 26 on the school grounds. Students in grades one through six participated during their regular activity times. Each grade ran or walked separately so that not all students were outside at the same time. They were encouraged to wear clothing reminiscent of the 60s and 70s as well as appropriate sneakers as they walked or ran laps to the beat of music
offered up by parent-D.J. Paula Dribble who dressed the part of a hippie for the event and kept the energy flowing. Tricia Kublank coordinated the event with the activity directors. Children collected pledges from their parents, friends and family. Ambitious students were determined to walk or run as many laps as possible during the morning activity times. Many of them wore tie-died clothing, bell bottom jeans or jewelry with the peace sign. All were eager to make their teachers and parents proud.
The funds collected will be used for the activity projects such as art, music, media and P.E. equipment. Mrs. Kublank and the other activity directors participated by handing out water bottles and checking off laps that were completed as well as cheering the children on. Many parent volunteers helped with the event proving that Manatee Elementary School is one where children and their parents participate together in making education a fun and exciting experience for everyone. More FDNY firefighters joining local retirees club
VIERA VOICE George White
Members of the FDNY Retirees of Brevard County meet in front of the 9/11 memorial at Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 48 in Viera. Back row from left are Eddie Ahearn and Baudon Malmbeck. Front row from left are Pat Gray, LeRoy Haynes, Mike Moody and John Masterson. By George white
Retired New York fire fighters have been organized in Brevard County since 1975, but the events of that fateful Sept. 11 in 2001, the group has grown a lot larger, and closer. “It started with only four members but we have 50 now and we know more are out there that just don’t know about us,’’ said John Masterson with the FDNY Retirees of Brevard County. The group is proud to gather in front of the memorial to 9/11, including a section of I-beam from one of the fallen towers of the World Trade Center, now located at the new Brevard County Fire Rescue Station No. 48. Most of the business of the group is social in that they
can share stories about their careers and other topics about retirement in Florida, where many New Yorkers end up to escape the cold weather. “We talk about issues pertaining to health, welfare and social activities,’’ said club member Mike Moody, a member since 1997, who lost his firefighter brother, Capt. Thomas Moody, in the 9/11 attacks. Retired Lt. Edward Ahearn, a past president of the group, lost his son, Lt. Brian Ahearn, 43, who was a member of Engine 230. “After 2001, a lot of guys came in and joined up,’’ he said. Lt. Patrick Gray also lost his son, firefighter Jim Gray, 35. “It’s the brotherhood we share. I’m in it because of them giving respect to the
men that were lost,’’ he said. 9/11 survivor supervising fire marshal LeRoy Haynes now serves as president of the retirees group. “I was right there. After 9/11 there was a big turnover so the retention rate started down so it’s not an old group up there so there are not as many retirees,’’ he said. There are a total of 26 similar groups nationwide including nine in Florida, he said. FDNY Retirees of Brevard meet at 7:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month (except June, July and August) in room 3 East at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Indialantic. Membership dues are $25 annually. For more information, call 321-768-1892. VV
