Gabe Cenker may be only 9 years old, but he already knows much more about bird watching than most adults on the Space Coast.

The home-schooled third grader from Rockledge has personally seen and identified nearly 160 species of birds and has participated in the annual Christmas Bird Count as well as being named the top young birder at a hawk-watching event in the Keys.

Now he has formed Young Birders of Brevard to offer trips and tips to other young people in the area who share his love for bird identification.

Already a lover of trains, his interest in birding started simply enough.

“He saw a TV show with a whole thing on Peregrine falcons, which he really liked, so he had to go get all the information he could on them and that’s when it all started,” said his mother, Jennifer Cenker.

Adopted children whose greatest need is fulfilled — to be loved by someone they trust — often take after their adoptive parents and become super-givers themselves.

“I certainly see this with my Kate,” said Rose Munzenmayer, who was adopted, and reached out to adopt her only child from China.

A senior at Viera High School, Kate Munzenmayer has helped raise money for Harmony Farms, where therapy horses helped her overcome ADHD symptoms.

Allergic to cats, she still helps the feline creatures she loves by raising money for organizations that rescue them. Additionally, she has collected 479 pairs of shoes for Haiti’s poor, so far.

“I really believe Kate got her drive to help others by being in this household, seeing it in practice every day,” Munzenmayer said.

The same is true for Joe and Cindy Hurston, of nonprofit Air Mobile Ministries, which delivers purifiers to make water safe to drink. Their two daughters, adopted from Haiti, have committed themselves to helping children whose shoes they once filled.

“We help others because the Lord commands it,” said Joe Hurston, author of the book Run to the Roar, about overcoming adversity and helping others do the

same. “We teach this to our children and they take to it naturally.”

Whether from China, Haiti, Guatemala or any other country, there are deep emotional needs for self love to be met in adopted children before they can become capable of caring for others, according to Linda Thompson, who, with husband Dennis has adopted three children from foster care.

“You truly must see it as a mission to give that child the unconditional love they have never had, no matter what,” Thompson said.

All three children are avid volunteers in school and the community. Their favorite role is as ambassadors at awareness events, encouraging other families to adopt.

Generosity must be paired with the right motivation, said Eileen Scharf, a licensed clinical social worker in Suntree who specializes in child psychology.

“In my practice, I see many children who are always looking to make others happy in an effort to win approval and love,” Scharf said. “This makes them sad and angry as adults. When children’s need for love is met, then is when they can become genuine givers versus pleasers.”

Rock the Silence isn’t silent about homelessness

Rock the Silence comes to Suntree on April 22, 2012

Three women will rock Advent Lutheran Church with a dramatic presentation that will astound and touch people of all levels on Sunday, April 22. People who can hear, as well as those with limited or no hearing, will watch songs come to life in a fun and exciting way as music and sign language become one.

Donna Hall, Lisa Ottalagano and Jessica Kidd comprise the group called Rock the Silence, which was formed in 2000. For the past 12 years, the group has blended sign language with songs in a ministry that reaches others with encouragement and hope. Their performances transform sign language into a dance of hands that accompany contemporary Christian songs and traditional hymns.

Part of the show’s message is to raise awareness of the plight of deaf individuals, although the majority of their performances are before people without hearing difficulty.

The April 22 concert will benefit Family Promise of Brevard, an outreach for homeless families. Advent Lutheran Church is located at 7550 N. Wickham Road. Doors to the sanctuary will open at 6:30 p.m. A free will offering will be received during the concert and donations are always accepted.

Originally from Los Angeles, Michael met Paolo while vacationing in the central region of Italy.

“I hated L.A. and felt so lonely,” Paola Kovnick said.

“The women don’t cook, clean or raise their own children. Everyone drives a black Escalade with tinted windows, and they all have the same lips from the same surgeons. Women here have four and five children and they still clean their own homes and cook, like in Italy. People are so friendly here it freaked me out in the beginning. I love the sense of community.”

Barbara Annette Cole Moore received her undergraduate degree in education from Tuskegee University and continued her studies to attain her doctorate in theology and Christian education. She has conducted countless workshops and seminars throughout the U.S and served as instructor and counselor in the Army, Brevard school system, and the Child Care Association of Brevard. For more than 39 years, she worked to obtain funds and resources to assist disadvantaged children and their parents. Recently, Moore was awarded the Rodney S. What is your favorite food indulgence?

I am very nutritious-conscious, so I try to avoid sweets. However, when my husband and I ride by Krispy Kreme donuts, we always hope the light is on, which means they have hot donuts. If so, we buy a dozen and eat them in the car before we get home.

What is the strangest food you have ever eaten?

Vegetarian duck.

What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?

I am not adventurous; however, I did ride in a single engine airplane with my husband, who is a pilot. I hate a small plane.

If money were no object, how would you spend your days?

Her thoughts I am retired and I am doing just what I want to do every day. I spend as much time as I want in my morning devotion without rushing. I plan time and activities for my grandchildren, I help anyone who calls and I can be hospitable and host activities at my home when needed. I conduct workshops, plan events, am involved in continuing education, attend conferences and conventions and we travel when we want to.

If you could travel back in time to have lunch with a historical figure, where would you go and who would you invite for lunch?

I would invite Corrie Ten Boom and Mother Teresa to my house for a salad of fruits and vegetables.

What kind of car did you learn to drive in?

A Buick.

I would go to Afghanistan.

Association Living

Facilities management is fancy terminology for the operation and maintenance of your community association’s common areas and physical assets. Most existing associations will already have some or all maintenance procedures and policies in place. This column is intended to assist in reviewing your current program and provide some ideas to implement a plan.

The ultimate responsibility lies with your association’s board of directors. The board’s overall role is to preserve, maintain and enhance the value of the assets of the corporation.

This is often delegated to a management company or onsite manager. If you are selfmanaged, one of the directors or other volunteers may take

the direct responsibility.

Some associations appoint a committee to oversee maintenance. The board will also want to find where, in the governing documents, these responsibilities are defined.

The first step in establishing a program is to identify and inspect the association’s assets. The inspection will reveal what needs immediate attention and allow you to set a maintenance schedule.

Once the initial inspection is complete, you may want to schedule ongoing inspections, possibly quarterly or semiannually. It is also a good idea to have vendors accompany you for their respective areas.

When the inspection is complete, you will have garnered information for a punch list that will tell

Lamontagne was introduced to the sport as a child in Turkey. His father relocated to Satellite Beach and later retired from Patrick Air Force Base.

He pursued baseball and golf as a Satellite High

School graduate, Brevard Community College student and finally at the University of Florida, where he earned a degree in public relations.

Golf won out, and Lamontagne went on the Professional Golf Association tour in the early 1990s.

“If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t have done it any other way,” Lamontagne said.

“It’s a way to bring more value to the membership,” said Lamontagne, who has been director of golf for seven years and also general manager since 2009.

But there was a problem, according to Gabe.

“Whenever I went on trips, I was the only kid. I want to get more of them interested in birding,’’ he said.

Initially, there was some reluctance toward expert adult birders accepting Gabe as a peer, because of his age.

“They change their minds after he starts sharing and they find out that he actually

knows a lot,’’ Jennifer Cenker said.

Some learned the American Sign Language alphabet in elementary school, but took it no further.

Others, however, made it their careers while helping others.

“I had an interest in deafness, so I decided to go for interpreting and got a job at the same time in the field and fell in love with it,” said Marti McCoy, who is a licensed clinical social worker with a degree in interpreting for the Deaf.

“I learned a lot that I never even dreamed was out there, because once you get into it, you realize there’s an entire culture that goes along with the language.”

It’s that culture that McCoy wants to nurture in others for a better understanding of Brevard County’s deaf community.

Beginning April 16 for five weeks, McCoy will teach sign language at Suntree United Methodist Church.

McCoy’s enthusiasm for the upcoming classes could be heard in her voice describing what she loves about teaching.

“I think it’s the excitement that the students have in learning it, I mean I’ve never had a class that were bored, they’ve all been enthusiastic learners and the more they learn the more they want to learn. That’s the most rewarding thing.”, McCoy said.

She works with special-needs children and the hearing impaired during the day and hopes the classes will change the misconception people have concerning the deaf.

“I think that some people have the idea that if a deaf person needs to sign that they have failed as far as speech and people don’t realize that sign language is part of their culture and has nothing to do with being successful or not successful,” McCoy said. “I think there’s not a whole lot of information or there’s a lot of misinformation out there or assumptions about deafness. So this could possibly begin them on the journey to understanding better about hearing impairments and deaf people and beginning to appreciate the language and respecting it as a language.”

Viera Pizza will be hosting the first Eat My Crust 5K Run/ Walk to benefit the Viera High school athletic department on Sunday, May 6.

An avid runner, Viera Pizza operating partner Mike Acosta, and his staff have organized the event with race director, Brittany Streufert. The goal is to raise $5,000 to benefit the Viera High School Athletic Department in their purchase of a new scoreboard, and rubberized track, which will enable larger events to be held at the school.

Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers in each five-year age group, 8 and under to 80 and over, and the overall top finishers for men, women and students.

Acosta, a committed community advocate said, “As the Eat My Crust 5K idea came to fruition, we chose Viera High School as our recipient because we wanted to help promote athleticism in our youth and also to give back to the community that has supported us and made us so successful.”

The event will be held at Viera Pizza, located in the Mobil station on Stadium Parkway, Viera. Acosta hopes to have more than 300 runners and walkers participate.

Running Zone is providing race management and timing and Viera Pizza’s new mascot, Joey Pepperoni , will make his debut as he leads the L’il Pepperoni free kid’s run.

Open to everyone, the morning event will be full of fun and prizes, including the chance to win an iPad2.

“Our pizza and breakfast buffet at the post-race party will not disappoint”, said Acosta. “There are still opportunities for additional sponsors and door prizes.”

Brevard County’s only overnight summer camp

Shiloh Adventure Camp (Shiloh) is Brevard County’s only overnight summer camp and is located at Long Point Park in Melbourne Beach.

The 501(c)(3) organization builds relationships between campers and with camp counselors who serve as mentors. According to shilohadventure.com, the camp is a Christian camping ministry changing the lives of campers through personal attention and local involvement. Shiloh is not affiliated with any one church.

Children ages 8 to 15 come from within and outside Brevard County to attend the camp. A ratio of two counselors for every six

campers ensures individual attention and interaction in small groups.

The Long Point Park setting allows campers to live within nature, away from computers, cell phones and other high-tech gadgetry for a week-long retreat.

Dan Quattrocchi, camp director for four years, believes the positive impact is immediately evident.

“I love to see the transformation of the kids over the week. They come in timid, hanging on to their mothers or foster parents, but at the end of the week, they don’t want to go home.”

Quattrocchi, his wife and their three children live at the camp during the summer.

The camp cook prepares delicious food and a nurse’s station provides basic first aid treatment. A registered nurse is on call 24 hours a day.

Lillian Hobson is a UCF student at the regional campus in Cocoa and a Grandparent raising Grandchildren member in

Viera. Hobson and three other business majors have partnered with Shiloh to raise awareness of the camp as a valuable resource for the community.

The team calls itself Knights for Shiloh.

Hobson said, “I see it as a potential form of respite for the caregiver families to have a week at home to recharge their batteries while their children/grandchildren are being well cared for and challenged in an overnight

setting.”

According to Hobson, about 20 percent of the campers come from the Melbourne/Rockledge area.

Quattrocchi said he expects about 250 campers to attend throughout the summer.

“Some campers beg their parents or grandparents to pay for an extra week. They just don’t want to go back home.”

Sea turtle nesting season has begun

Leatherback sea turtles, the largest living turtles, begin to come ashore in March to lay their eggs. Typically six to eight feet in length and approximately 1,200 to 1,500 pounds, they are the rarest of the three sea turtle species that nest in our county, and are listed as an endangered species.

Remember to shield or turn off beachside lights, limit night beach walks, avoid using flashlights or flash photography on the beach and avoid nesting sea turtles, hatchlings or their nests. While Brevard County and its municipalities have local lighting ordinances to protect sea turtles, the ordinances do not take effect until May 1 when Loggerhead sea turtles begin to nest in large numbers. Green sea turtles follow shortly thereafter, with thousands of nests by the end of the season.

The Viera High School girls tennis team is living up to the expectations the Hawks took into this season.

With a 9-1 overall record, the Hawks were well on their way to winning the Cape Coast Conference championship, provided they defeat Cocoa Beach – a team they had beaten already once this season.

“All the girls are playing well,” coach Traci Stiffler said. “They’re playing well individually; they’re playing well as doubles (teams). It’s a good season.”

Viera’s only loss came to Vero Beach, a team the Hawks could face again in the district tournament, which begins at Whispering Pines Park in Port St. Lucie on April 2. Should Viera reach the championship match, it would have a spot in the regional tournament.

“They’re all smart players,” Stiffler said. “Tori has a fantastic serve. Pei Pei has an amazing ability to get to the ball. Katie hits hard.

They all have their particular strengths, but the top five are all good, all-around players.

They work very hard, and they are definitely motivated to win.”

If everything continues to go right for the Hawks, they are anticipating another rematch with Vero Beach in the district tournament.

“They have some fantastic players,” Stiffler said. “That’s going to be a tough district tournament for sure, for us and Vero Beach. That’s going to be a tough match.” VV

Fresh off the first district championship in program history, the Viera High girls soccer team is sending three players on to the collegiate level.

Striker Olivia Thompson and midfielder/forward Maddy Nagy have both signed to play at Division II Lincoln Memorial University.

“We went there together to go tour the campus and we had to stay with some of the players there,” Thompson said. “The team was just really welcoming and also, the campus was really beautiful at the time. It’s a lot different than Florida, temperature-wise.

There were mountains … it was a nice change of scenery.”

D’Anna had this to say about both girls in a release issued by the school, “Maddy is a powerful striker who can shoot from long range with either foot. She is tough on the ball, carries it very well, and can score and is a playmaker.

She will be a stand-out in the league. Liv is a very creative and smart player. She can make those around her better. She has flair and smarts and is a gamer. She gets the job done.”

Midfielder Haley Gethin signed with Division I South Carolina-Upstate.

For Gethin, signing with South Carolina-Upstate not only gave her a chance to play in the Division I Atlantic Sun Conference, it also gave her a chance to join older sister, Erin, who runs cross country and track for the Spartans.

“It was just nice to have some family close to me,” Gethin said.

All three girls played club soccer for Space Coast United.

At Viera, Nagy ranked second on the team with 11 goals this past season. She also had seven assists. Thompson had 10 goals and seven assists.

Gethin had three goals and two assists.

“Maddy, Olivia and Haley are tactically sound players determined to never deter from working harder or learning new aspects of the game,” Viera coach Steve Richards said in a statement.

“They are players that will make an immediate impact on any team, leading to greater success on the field as well as in the classroom for their chosen colleges.” VV

Viera High School will host its third annual Hawk Golf Challenge on May 5 at the Suntree Country Club with a shotgun start set for 8 a.m.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the Viera High varsity, JV and freshman football programs. The Hawks are coming off their most successful season in school history with four wins under first-year coach Kevin Mays.

While there are plenty of everyday needs, the program is looking to add new helmets to accommodate the growth of the program, and to be able to recondition older helmets to ensure player safety. There is also a need for more shoulder and leg pads to keep up with the rise in the number of players from freshmen to varsity. Also, the program needs new blocking dummies and practice equipment, as well as an HD video camera for game films.

The event is put on by the Viera High Quarterback Club.

“High school football is an expensive sport, yet one that is entirely self-funded with no financial aid from the county,” tournament director Chris McDaniel wrote in an email.

“Through the VHS QB Club, the Viera High football team needs the support of those in our community as we continue to build the football program under Coach Mays and his staff.”

There are four types of donations ranging from the Corporate Donation ($1,500) to the, Gold Donation ($750), the Silver Donation ($500) and the Bronze Donation ($75 for a single golfer). There are also hole sponsorships for $150 a hole. The club is still accepting donations for the silent auction, prizes or the program.

Lunch will be served, and there will be door prizes, a trophy presentation and a silent auction.

Even if you don’t like baseball, and want to feel good about our community, take time out on a Saturday morning, during baseball season, about 11 a.m. to visit Viera Regional Park’s Little League fields. Check out the Challenger Division games, a name aptly chosen because of the special players involved.

It is a challenge for many of these young athletes just

to put on their uniforms.

Some are handed a bat to try to hit a ball they can’t see.

Others run or walk to first base with a volunteer-buddy at their sides. This would be challenging to teams with one such player, but in this division, everyone on the team is challenged. Many don’t have just one handicap; several have two or three.

According to Michele and David Zavetz, who have coached this team for seven years, 28 players

are involved. The Zavetz children, Justin and Jenna, and an inspired group of buddies and volunteers are also involved.

The players are divided into two groups or teams with emphasis on hitting, fielding and maneuvering an obstacle course. Often, the process is to make sure the players get out for fresh air, keep them moving and safe and not to lose focus.

Sykes, who plays outside hitter, is still in the University of Kentucky record books under her maiden name of Spinner. She’s tied for the most kills in a match (36) and is third in career kills (1,565); second in attack attempts (4,172) and fourth in aces (145) and digs (1,127). She also led the Wildcats in kills for three straight seasons.

Though she has happily settled in as coach of the Hawks (her husband, Josh, coaches the boys basketball team), she is understandably excited about getting the chance to play again.

The tryouts, which took place in December, featured 70-80 players from around

the state.

“It had been seven years since I last played a game,” Sykes said. “Just to go back and see that high-level competition, and to just get back in the gym and be on the other side of things … it was amazing, because I never thought I would get that experience again.”

Now that she has, she is enjoying every minute of it.

Sykes’ players have been very supportive of their coach, who led Viera to its first district championship last season.

“They’re really excited,” Sykes said. “They ask me all the time, ‘When are you playing? We’re coming to watch you.’” VV

The Brevard County spelling bee showcased 89 talented students from all over the Space Coast on Wednesday, March 7.

Beginning at 10 a.m., the students patiently waited for their turns to step forward and take on some of the difficult words in the dictionary.

Challenging words such as allocation, surrealist, kudzu and syllable were just a few the students had to spell correctly. They were allowed to request the language of origin, part of speech, definition, alternate spellings and how a word was used in a sentence. Knowing the

Students in grades four through eight competed this year. Most were composed and confident as they spelled their words and if they missed, they took it in stride.

It was a competitive spelling bee, but it was interesting to see students congratulating one another near the end. It showed the kind of maturity and social respect that these children are learning from their teachers and parents.

The winning word, nosocomial, which means a disease or infection originating in a hospital, was correctly spelled by Stuti Mishra, an eighth-grader at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. This was her third spelling bee win. Last year, she made it to the national semi-finals and hopes to do the same this year.

Second place winner was Mary Horton, an 11-yearold home-schooled sixth grader who went head-tohead with Mishra for several rounds. Both girls will represent Brevard County

PeaceJam club teaches Viera High students about caring

Viera retirement community sponsors writing competition for high school seniors The Silver Pen Scholarship will award $3,750 for future college expenses. Open to current high-school seniors with plans to graduate in 2012, the writing competition is sponsored by the Watersong retirement community. The writer of the top essay will receive a plaque and $1,500.

The student earning second place will receive a certificate and $1,000, while those placing third will receive a certificate and $750 and fourth will receive a certificate and $500.

Watersong will host a formal award reception in May. Winning submissions will be featured on wrinklethink.com, a pro-aging blog hosted by Senior Living Communities, which owns and operates Watersong.

The Resident Advisory Council at Watersong, comprised of business professionals, educators and community leaders will judge the entries based on several criteria.

Sharon Larson, director of member services believes the topic, which asks students to consider the perspective of a person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, is one way to bridge the communication gap between older and younger generations.

“The goal of The Silver Pen is to get young adults interested in the process of aging so that we can foster a culture of mutual understanding and respect for the aged in our society.”

According to Larson, applications have been distributed to participating schools in the greater Melbourne area including: Viera High School, West Shore Jr./Sr. High School, Palm Bay Senior High School, Melbourne High School, Melbourne Central Catholic High School, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, Eau Gallie High School, Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School, Cocoa High School and Cocoa Beach High School.

Throughout Lent, St. Mary’s Catholic School in Rockledge is raising awareness about juvenile diabetes.

More than three million Americans have Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. About 15,000 children and adults are diagnosed daily. Millions more have Type 2 diabetes.

This year, kindergartner Federico Merheb, diagnosed with diabetes at age 2, inspired the school’s project.

Suzanne Strain, the firstgrade teacher organizing the school-wide Lenten program each year, said it was a natural fit for the school.

beginners, chair aerobics and the opportunity to watch Nick Jonas, of the Jonas Brothers musical group, discuss his life with diabetes.

Though not celebrities, Federico and his family will do their part to educate students through their story.

“The scariest time was when he was newly diagnosed and we had to give him insulin shots at every mealtime,” Lymari Merheb said. “Once his glucose levels dropped very low and he passed out. It was terrifying.”

Technology has made life a little easier. The insulin pump Federico now uses disperses insulin when needed, thus avoiding multiple shots, so he can spend his time running, playing and learning with his friends at St. Mary’s who are learning something, too.

“When I first found out about Federico my heart sank and I had mixed emotions,” Merheb said.

While challenging, having diabetes doesn’t limit options in life.

“Even though it is laborintensive to treat, juvenile diabetes is not a physical disability,” she said. “You can do the same as everyone else. That’s something we emphasize at home.”

Until Easter, students will be reading accounts of children who have diabetes, learn the science behind insulin, its important role in sugar regulation of the body, proper nutrition and the importance of exercise and participate in a Juvenile Diabetes Walk to raise money for the nonprofit organization that seeks a cure.

Had he lived, Dr. Seuss would have been 108 years old today.

That is a number that most children — and many adults — find impossible to fathom.

He was born Theodor Seuss Geisel in 1904 and wrote more than 60 books before his death in 1991. The one thing that sticks in the minds of readers of all ages is the whimsical, musical tone and the colorful characters of the books this talented writer penned while he was alive.

Children at schools across America celebrated the famed birthday by participating in games and wearing costumes reminiscent of the characters in the Dr. Seuss books. At Manatee Elementary, most children and

teachers were dressed in colorful attire and played various games in the lobby, the cafeteria and the auditorium. Each grade participated in all events separately and although not a competition, the students worked hard to outdo one another.

Some of the games were One Fish, Two Fish and Hop on Pop which is a hopscotch type of game played indoors, just outside the school office.

The event ran from 8:30 to 10 a.m. with a stop, drop and read break at 9:45. At that time, the students were instructed to settle down to read one of the many Dr. Seuss books available. They read with teachers or volunteers.

A favorite quote of the beloved author is, “The more that you read, the more you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go,” from a book that has become a favorite gift for graduating students everywhere.

As one teacher explained, “Dr. Seuss may be gone, but his characters will live on in the hearts of children forever.” VV

The theme of this year’s kindergarten concert was Welcome to the Jungle, so the children dressed as jungle animals. They sang and had speaking parts throughout the performance.

The concert was divided into five interpretive choral parts including Welcome to the Jungle, The Mane Man, Danger, Making a Friend and Celebration. The theme revolved around the jungle animals making friends with one another as well as with one supposedly ferocious lion who wasn’t as fearsome as the other animals thought.

daily rehearsals prepared them for the concert.

With the eight kindergarten classes, there were two separate concerts held on the same evening, at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. The cafeteria was filled with parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters at each showing, which demonstrated how devoted the families are to their children. School events such as this generally draw a large crowd.

BUSINESS K-9 unit adds to community security

Especially after the recent case of a law enforcement officer dying in the line of duty, most agree that the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deserves our thanks for their protection against criminals.

What some might not think about are the four-legged officers who risk their lives daily as part of the BCSO K-9 unit.

In 1997, the BCSO established the K-9 unit, which at the time, consisted of four teams. The K-9 Unit has now expanded to 13 K-9 teams that

are individually assigned to different precincts throughout Brevard County. The unit uses German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois, both dualpurpose patrol and narcotics detection canines.

The 13 deputies with their K-9 partners train together on tasks including criminal searches of buildings and areas, tracking, drugs and explosives detection and officer protection.

“I’ve been in the unit since 1997 and love it,’’ said Cpl. Lyndale Smith, who also is a certified trainer for the unit. “I really love the companionship

with the dogs. They are loyal and trustworthy and very hardworking. You have to be able to trust and depend on them. They‘ll die for you.”

Before allowed to patrol, the deputy/K-9 pairs must complete 10 weeks of training, starting with 160 hours covering the basics of patrolling. Smith said they would later be trained for drugs or explosives.

After the K-9 teams pass their certifications, the training does not stop. Continuous maintenance training must be conducted or the canines will lose proficiency in their trained tasks.

Every Wednesday, all K-9 teams meet to stay proficient by providing new training challenges to both the K-9 handler and canine partner.

This training will cover basic obedience, building searches, area searches, bite work and drug searches; but also allow trainers to cover unique scenarios encountered by other K-9 teams.

“The key is the bonding between dog and handler,” Smith said. “We make sure they have that bond. Every dog is different; they all respond to things in different ways.

We recognize what they need

and adapt training to each individual dog.”

Some dogs, for instance, are animal-aggressive and can be distracted by other dogs in the unit. For that reason, they are separated or leashed so they can keep on task.

Fellow-trainer Deputy Shawn Crook said, “I come to work, every day, happy.”

The youngest dog in the unit is the German Shepherd Kane being trained and handled by Deputy Tamara Mullican.

“I’ve been doing this for 17 years. You have to really love this job and you have to be proactive,’’ Mullican said.

The K-9 Unit also performs demonstrations throughout the year to show how their trained dogs listen to them in obedience; how they apprehend criminal suspects and release on command; how they can find lost items or articles in high grass; and how they alert on hidden drugs.

The dogs are on patrol for about eight or nine years after which they are retired to live out the rest of their days with their handlers and families.

The Space Coast chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) believes engineering is for everyone with a passion for the field. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We really try to outreach to younger women to encourage them to come into the math and science fields,â&#x20AC;? said Viera resident Suzanne Plantec, a longtime SWE member. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to get as many women who are interested involved as we can, as we do some really neat things.â&#x20AC;?

In late February, the 23-year-old organization thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 100-members strong, celebrated its annual award ceremony at the Rockledge Country Club to award scholarships and honor local ladies of the community working in the engineering field who are advancing women in many aspects. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a chance to recognize the technical achievements of women along the Space Coast,â&#x20AC;? Plantec said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are from different companies throughout the county doing different things and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a nice thing to do.â&#x20AC;?

In doing so, they hope to debunk many myths about the engineering field, especially that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a career

path meant only for men. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our mission is to inform the community of the opportunities available for women,â&#x20AC;? Plantec said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve learned is from the organization and the speakers and tours weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s given me a chance to network and socialize with women in the same field as me. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s changed my life in that sense.â&#x20AC;?

During regular meetings hosted throughout the county, the group focuses not only on engineering subjects, but also on social matters.

Additionally, the women donate their time and skills to the community hoping to make an impact insuring that women in the future will not have to work as hard to become engineers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We volunteer and host a lot of workshops to get young women involved,â&#x20AC;? said vice president Kristin Freeman. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re reaching a lot of students in the community who wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t otherwise have a lot of math and science opportunities and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to supplement that within the school systems and the girl scouts.â&#x20AC;?

The Viera East Golf Course’s fans are legion. Golf pro Justin Wasson received 12 emails from youngsters attending February’s 2012 Florida State Gold Association Junior Tour praising the fast greens, including one from 10-year-old winner, Latanna Stone.

The hands behind the success don’t drive a golf club, but instead, a maintenance golf cart. Scott Mosher has been maintaining the greens since June 2005, a challenge for the 127-acre course that hosts 250 golfers daily, with 6,000 rounds of golf played last month.

“Imagine what happens when you go to your mailbox, back and forth, every day,” Mosher said. “You wear a path in the grass and the ground, right? Well, multiply that by all the players we have, getting in and out of their carts, walking to and from the green, in exactly the same spot.”

Add Florida’s blazing sun, high winds and driving rain for a challenge.

To Mosher, it’s just one more reason his loves his job, something different every day.

“I love what I do. I love being outdoors. And because I am from Maine, I will never complain about how hot it can get,” Mosher said.

The Viera course likely has the greatest variety of wildlife in the area because of its buffer preserves reaching to the St. Johns River. In a given day, Mosher may see nesting Sandhill cranes and bald eagles, white pelicans, coyotes, bobcats and deer, in addition to the other unique wildlife spotted on Central Florida courses.

In addition to overseeing the Viera East course, Mosher oversees the conservation areas around the 86 lakes across Viera’s 5,000 acres.

Mosher spends his two days off from his 12-day workweeks outdoors. He and his wife, Karen, hit the road on his Harley-Davidson Roadglide, with camping a favorite pastime.

What do you get when you mix Major League Baseball players and the exploration of Christ?

Some pretty powerful stories, according to former Suntree United Methodist parishioner, Elizabeth Morrisey.

Last month, Elizabeth and her husband Kevin, hosted a book signing in Melbourne showcasing, God’s Lineup: Testimonies of Major League Baseball Players, the couple’s recently published book that holds revelations of 26 former and current MLB players featuring how and why Christ has served them within their personal lives and sports careers.

The Morriseys player captured the attention of local baseball fans and fellowfaithful residents, with the

help of Viera’s Washington Nationals outfielder Brett Carroll, whose testimony is included in the book about how baseball had become his God and how it was hard to share his faith with teammates.

Carroll is in Brevard County for spring training.

“Being a fan of baseball and knowing that there is a book that you can get nearby that features a ball player that’s in their hometown where you watch him on the field and read about him and feel like you know him is really cool,” Elizabeth Morrisey said. “You’ll see how down to earth these guys are, how much they love the Lord and learn about the players while getting to hear about Jesus.”

The idea of the inspiring book surfaced after the couple attended a St. Louis Cardinals game on the team’s Faith Day in 2006, where players discussed how blessed they felt

and how they served the Lord.

“We thought how great it would be to get these ball players into a book discussing their faith and testimonies,” she said. “I think it’s wonderful that Christianity is becoming more apparent in sports and that we hear about it and more players are willing to talk about it.”

The couple’s goal is changing how fans view athletes in relation to Christ.

“Reading these players’ stories and their testimonies you’ll recognize that they’re humans and although they play baseball and make some good money, you’ll see that they’ve dealt with difficult stuff and deal with problems just like the rest of us,” Kevin Morrisey said.

“You’ll see how they turned to their faith and overcame those challenges. It’s truly amazing.”

Transit volunteers needed The Brevard County Local Coordinating Board for Transportation Disadvantaged Services is seeking applications for volunteer board members.

The board, established by Chapter 427 of the Florida Statutes, consists of 15 members from state and local agencies and general interest groups. The LCB provides direction and advice on Transportation Disadvantaged Services in Brevard County to Space Coast Area Transit.

The LCB is seeking volunteer members and alternates for Citizen Advocate, Citizen Advocate - System User; Representing Disabled Citizens (Alternate); Citizen Advocate (Alternate); and Citizen Advocate - System User (Alternate.)

The term of appointment is three years. The LCB meets quarterly at the Viera Government Center, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Building C, 2nd Floor, Space Coast Room, Viera.

Once applications are received, a subcommittee will review all applicants and make recommendations to the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization for approval.

My day starts with a necessary pot of coffee, getting the kids up and out to school, a few minutes on the iPad and then in the shower and off to the office.

If you could volunteer for a charity for one year in any country in the world, where would you go?

Oddly enough, I volunteered for an entire summer while in high school. I traveled to Thailand and the Philippines with a group called Youth with a Mission. We traveled to remote villages and helped with whatever was needed.

What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

Swimming in the Gulf of Siam to a fishing boat. Anyone that knows me knows I have an incredible fear of sharks. While swimming towards the boat I felt something big bump my leg.

What is your pet peeve?

People that make excuses rather than own whatever it is they’ve done or said. Your word does mean something. I try to tell my kids all the time, think before you speak; choose your words carefully.

What is your super power?

My powers of persuasion. If I feel really strongly about something, nine times out of 10, I can probably convince you to feel strongly about it, too.

Who can always make you laugh the loudest?

My 3 year old, Joseph.

If you could be anyone else for one day, who would it be and why?

Angelina Jolie, I can help her gain weight and then spend the day with Brad Pitt. Two birds, one stone!

River Otter (Lontra canadensis)

The river otter, the only aquatic member of the weasel family, lives in the rivers, streams, ponds, and marshes of North America. This generally nocturnal mammal is occasionally active in the

daytime. Playful behavior is characteristic; activities, such as water play and chasing other otters, also provide social bonding.

Favorites of this carnivore are crayfish, amphibians,

turtles and especially fish.

Equipped for aquatic hunting, it dives expertly; its powerful tail propels it through surface water at a speed of about six miles per hour; it has watertight ears and nostrils

during submersion; it holds its breath up to four minutes; its sensitive whiskers detect prey in muddy water. On land, acute smelling and hearing abilities help track animals, such as small mammals or birds.

Regrettably, the otter is legally harvested for its marketable fur. The longer outer coat consists of strong, water-resistant guard hairs which protect the undercoat and skin from moisture and cold. Air trapped in the denser and finer undercoat enhances insulation. Intense daily grooming by this animal is vital to sustain water resistance. Maintenance routines include sunning to dry the fur, rubbing, and smoothing natural oils on the coat with the forepaws and

18th Annual Viera Spring Bunny Hop The 18th Annual Viera Spring Bunny Hop takes place at Space Coast Stadium, this year. This popular event grows every year and the additional space at the stadium seemed the perfect place for the egg hunt.

Sponsored by The Viera Company, Viera’s Super Walmart, The Viera Future Foundation, and the Space Coast Stadium thousands of eggs hidden at the stadium will make this the largest egg hunt in Brevard County.

Canine Commandos You never know what you might see while driving the roads of Brevard County. You see, there were about 20 children dressed in yellow shirts and jeans in a dog pen. But then this is at the Central Brevard Human Society Adoption Center and Spay/Neuter & Wellness Clinic at 1020 Cox Road in Cocoa. Cub Scout Pack 783, chartered to Faith Viera Lutheran Church, visited the Viera Voice office on Monday, March 12, 2012 to learn about communication and how the community newspaper grows from an idea into the paper product that is direct mailed to 16,000 homes each month.

Bluewater Creative Group Publisher, Jill Blue-Gaines, demonstrates how Viera Voice is printed on huge rolls of paper before it is cut and compiled into the publication each month. Her audience is members of Cub Scout Pack 783, parents, older boy scouts, other siblings and Cubmaster Joanne Stewart.
