Local McDonald’s picked as nation’s idea ‘seed store’ BY GEORGE WHITE

VIERA VOICE George White

As sweets seekers roll up to the drive-through windows and swarm front counters for the newest fare the nation’s No. 1 fast-food giant has to offer, they’ll be enjoying a slice of life that was made in Brevard. The Viera/Suntree McDonald’s restaurant was chosen to be a “Seed Store” to help introduce new products, such as tasty mini Bundt cakes. If you sampled a new creation at the store and later found it starring front and center of national television, radio, newspaper and social media ad campaigns, you may have been among those who said “I’m lovin’ it.”

Galina Kann and Sara Carlson make mini bundt cakes for Viera/Suntree McDonald’s.

Young artists paint pictures of Holocaust’s horror BY MIKE GAFFEY

A traveling museum of student-created Holocaust artwork is coming to Cocoa in April, carrying the message that such a horrific event must never be repeated and that the world must never forget. Holocaust Museum Central Florida 2015 runs from April 19 through 23 at the Space Coast Convention Center in the Holiday Inn Express at 301 Tucker Lane, near State Road 520 and Interstate 95. Sponsored by the Sister City Program of Cocoa Florida Inc., which connects Brevard County and the city of Beit Shemesh, Israel, the museum features artwork by students at World of Faith Fellowship Christian School in Spindale, N.C., chosen from the school’s Holocaust Museum. Artists range in age from kindergarten to college. Between 60 to 80 of the young artists and their families from the church congregation are scheduled to travel with the museum, depending on the amount of funds raised, said Rockledge resident Ron Shelton, director of the Sister City Program. “They serve as docents for the museum,” said Shelton, who first saw the traveling museum while at a 2010 summit in Washington, D.C. and started working in March to bring the exhibition to Brevard and obtain sponsors. “You’re interacting

As they studied, they decided to express what they learned through art and through models and different things they could create and they would make this little museum. And out of their experience they ended up creating an amazing museum.” The Cocoa exhibition will include a “Room of Remembrance,” featuring

The exhibition’s starting date is significant, as it comes just a few days after the observance of Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, from sundown April 15 to sunrise April 16, and just a few weeks before the 70th anniversary of Germany’s surrender on V-E Day. “Seventy years after the liberation of Auschwitz, two-thirds of the world’s population don’t know the Holocaust occurred, or they deny it,” Shelton said. “The purpose of the Holocaust Museum Central Florida 2015 Project is to reverse the trend of ignorance and denial about the Holocaust.” VV

The GFWC Viera Woman’s Club raised more than $1,300 for Heifer International at its annual Heifer Market, a Living Gift Market. The event was held at its monthly meeting on Monday, March 9 at The Brennity in Viera. Heifer International empowers families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity and links communities by helping to bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long

history of poverty. Animals provide partners with food such as milk, eggs and honey which can be traded or sold at markets. Families share the training they receive and pass on the first female offspring of their livestock to another family. This extends the impact of the original gift, allowing a once impoverished family to become donors and full participants in improving their communities. p u p a SPORTS Wr Tigers eyeing deep postseason run in tennis

BY CARL KOTALA

When it comes to this year’s Class 1A, District 11 Tennis Tournament, the Holy Trinity boys and girls tennis teams are looking at a possible clean sweep. “They both have the potential to win districts and then go frrther into the regionals, possibly state,” Tigers coach Mark Harrison said. The road to what could be a deep postseason run for both teams begins March

30 and 31 with the district tournament at the Fee Avenue Courts. The Tigers will be competing with Edgewood, Florida Air, John Carroll, Master’s Academy, Melbourne Central Catholic, Merritt Island Christian and St. Edward’s. Midway through March, Holy Trinity’s girls team was undefeated while the boys team had lost just one match. That kind of success should breed plenty of confidence heading into the playoffs

for a pair of teams who list players with the same last name at the top of each of their tennis ladders — Kattenberg. Seventh grader Anique Kattenberg is the No. 1 girl, while her brother, Egan — a freshman — is the No. 1 boy. “They practice their tails off,” Harrison said. “It’s a numbers game. They hit a lot of balls and they’re very driven.” While the Kattenbergs are on top, there is plenty of talent up and down the roster. There are no seniors on the boys team. Junior lefty Hunter Morris is No. 2, while sophomore Matt Ryan, also a lefty, plays at No. 3. Sophomore Thomas Guyton is No. 4, while

sophomore Saurav Ghosal checks in at No. 5 singles. They are followed by freshman Trevor Kattenberg and junior Andre Neuharth. The girls, meanwhile, are not only undefeated this season, they are also the defending district champions and have a terrific combination of savvy veterans and young players who should keep them competitive for a number of years to come. Eighth grader Ashleigh Kutryb plays No. 2 singles and she and Anique Kattenberg are also the defending district champions at No. 1 doubles. Playing behind them are a pair of seniors — Ravenel Rudd at No. 3 singles and Jenny Ryan at No. 4. Mary

Hawk, a seventh grader, is playing at No. 5 while sophomore Jamie Perry, senior Katie Merlin and eighth-grader Carolyn Dixon also see plenty of playing time. If there has been a surprise player for the Tigers this season, it’s definitely been Ryan. “She’s never played on a tennis team before and she’s playing No. 4 for me,” Harrison said. “She’s just a fighter. I mean, she is mentally tough and very mature on the court. “She is someone who is very impressive to me because she figures out a way to win. She runs around and keeps the ball in play and is really a mental giant.” VV

Viera tennis ramping up for district tennis tournament BY CARL KOTALA

The Viera High tennis program has become a real family coaching affair. Not only is Jill Mignogna back for another season as the Hawks’ girls coach, but her son, Tristan, is now coaching the boys team. As a former player for the Hawks — his last year was in 2013 — there’s no question Tristan can relate to his

players. “I know some of them, so (we have a relationship) already,” he said. “It’s easy to deal with them.” The Hawks have spent the better part of the last month gearing up for the Class 4A, District 5 tournament, which takes place March 31 at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando. “I’m hoping we’ll get somewhere in districts, but

we have some tough teams over in Orlando,” Viera senior Gabby Stanifer said. The Hawks are, in fact, the only team from Brevard County in a district that includes Cypress Creek, Dr. Phillips, Freedom, Gateway, Olympia, Osceola and St. Cloud. To get past that group and into the regionals, the Hawks know they’re going to have to play some very tough

matches. And if anybody knows about being in tough matches this season, it’s Stanifer, who plays No. 1 singles for the Viera girls. “She’s played some people that have scholarships to college,” Jill Mignogna said. “It’s been a rough time, but she’s really weathered through it.” Of course, getting the chance to play high-caliber players can only help raise

your own game, and that’s how Stanifer is taking it. “I’ve learned a lot,” she said. “I know I have nothing to lose and I know they’re going to D-I schools. They have huge futures ahead of them, so it’s fun playing against them. But I guess it’s not fun because you get your butt whooped.” While Stanifer has been doing her best at No. 1, the Hawks have also been getting solid play at No. 2 from senior Ana Hall. Junior Belou Briski, a newcomer, has been solid at No. 3 all season. Freshman Emily Li has been strong at No. 4 singles and senior Esha Jain has been practically automatic at the No. 5 spot. Viera has also been getting strong play from senior Jillian Mignogna and junior Gracie Dwight. The boys, meanwhile, have been trying to learn how to close out their matches. “We haven’t done our best yet, but we’re doing pretty good,” junior Lucas Gusman said. The Hawks have a young core group, led by their top two players — both sophomores — Nico Fuchs and Nick Granberry. Senior Chris Granberry is No. 3 with Gusman at No. 4 and junior Dylan Layun at No. 5. Also seeing plenty of action are freshman Will VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala Howald and sophomore Matt Podzielinski. The Viera High track team has some talented athletes this season. Among them, Kaylyn Magee, left, Briana Gorbea, Hayley Lofton, Molly Bryan, Collin Quigley, Chris Montevecchi, Taylor Streeter, Devin Nixon, Tre Nixon and Alverto Austin. BY CARL KOTALA

A knee injury kept Taylor Streeter from running for the Viera High boys 400-meter relay team at the state meet last season. This time, the senior doesn’t want that opportunity to slip by again. “I don’t want to miss any more meets,” Streeter said. “I want to be as healthy as possible.” Especially since this year’s 400 relay team — which set the school record last season — has a chance to be even

better this season. In fact, the Hawks boys and girls teams both have a chance to have a strong postseason and send a number of athletes on to the state meet. “I feel like we can make it to regionals like we did last year, and we’ll bring more people to state, too,” senior discus thrower Jessika Wojciechowski said. Streeter, who also runs the 200, will team with speedy Evan Cruz and Tre and Devin Nixon for the 400 relay. Streeter and the Nixon brothers were on last year’s

team, which set a school record. With Cruz now on board, they’re shooting to not only break it again, but to make it back to the state meet and finish strong. Tre and Devin Nixon should also be contenders in the 100 and 200. Lance Reynolds has one of the top times in the county in the 400, while teammate Alverto Austin and Luke Anderson are two of the county’s top hurdlers. Chris Montevecchi and Colin Quigley are the top distance runners while J.P. Caglione and Chris Hernandez are the top throwers. Hernandez is also a strong pole vaulter, though it’s teammate Nick Bandos who is No. 1 in the county with a school-record 14-0 mark. Bandos has a chance to do very well should he get to the state meet. While the girls don’t have the numbers the boys do, they still have plenty of talent. Hayley Lofton has been a quadruple threat all season for Viera. She has the county’s top long jump mark and is tied for first in the 100 hurdles. Not only that, she is No. 2 in both the triple jump and the 300 hurdles. Hannah Butler and Molly Bryan are the team’s top distance runners. After setting the school record in the shot put as a freshman last year, Kaitlyn Jensen holds the county’s top marks in both the shot and discus. While the girls have a strong 400 relay ream led by Gabby Vassallo, their 1,600 relay ranks No. 1 in the county and has a chance to go far. That team is made up of Briana Gorbea, Kaylyn Magee, Jazmine David and Morgan Pulliam. Shailine Nunez is also a threat in all three jumps as well as the relays. VV

Tigers having another successful year on the track BY CARL KOTALA

McKenzie Kilborne knows what it takes to win a state track championship. After all, the Holy Trinity senior was part of last year’s Class 1A girls state title team, and as a sophomore, she won the state high jump. This year, she and her teammates are ready to make another run at it. “I think we’re all very determined,” Kilborne said. “A lot of us know what it’s like to win a state title and we want to relive that moment.” Daniel Welch knows that feeling, too. He won the state’s 800 meters title last season and is gearing up to defend that title with the help of new head coach Marc Bailey. “I’m feeling very confident,” Welch said. “Coach Bailey has had good 800 runners in the past, who have run 1:52 or 1:54 and he’s (told) me every day that I’m capable of running that. “If I’m able to run like he says I can, then I have the best shot in the world to win state again.” Kilborne and Welch aren’t the only ones who have a chance to perform well

for the Tigers, who have endured a difficult season following the dismissal of popular and highlysuccessful coach Doug Butler last November. Bailey, an assistant at the school since 2012 before taking over, has been pleased with the leadership he has seen from his kids.

“In the midst of a really bad situation, the kids have persevered and they’ve continued to strive to be the best they can be, to live up to the tradition of excellence that Coach Butler established over the last decade,” Bailey said.

Kilborne, who hopes to break the school high jump record and win another title, backed the Tigers new head coach. “It’s obviously going to be difficult,” she said. “But if anybody can do what

Coach Butler did, it’s Coach Bailey.” Having another successful season would help, and the Tigers — who have more than 80 boys and girls out for track — are on their way to contending for the girls team title and several individual boys championships They have the state’s No. 1 ranked girls 400 relay team which features Alisha Pound, Taya Britten, Giana Gayles and Kilborne. State cross country runner-up Andrew Cacciatore leads the boys distance runners while Sydney and Shelby Smith are tops on the girls side. J’V’on Butler should contend again for the boys state high jump title, too. “Our top performers have been performing at a high level,” Bailey said. “We have some young, upand-coming stars that are really performing well, and the team as a whole has committed to the traditions of excellence and working hard to beat their personal bests at every competition.” VV

‘Wired Wednesdays’ bring VCS students up to Scratch BY LINDA WIGGINS

volunteers fills a dual purse of reversing an alarming trend of lost technical skills among American children and also to rev up the Space Coast’s educational exception to this rule. “Personally, I think that it is important to help students fall in love with education as early as possible. that computer engineering is a very rewarding and fun career path,” said FIT professor Dr. Carlos Otero, who with Dr. Anthony Smith created a unique Ardinobased program to expose third graders to numerous applications in hardwaresoftware interface, in partnership with VCS thirdgrade teacher Kelly Otero. Dr. Adrian Peter teaches the Scratch programming language to VCS students in first and second grade. Dr. Aldo Fabregas mentors students in fourth through sixth grade in software programming skills under the guise of interactive game development using Minecraft. The most recent assessment of numeracy and problem-solving skills released by the Education Testing Service shows that American millennials are tied for last among 22 industrialized countries. Finland received the top score in both categories. Disturbing statistics such as these lead to a future where America is no longer competitive in the global marketplace, Otero said. his palms into wet cement with other students at Manatee Elementary school in its inaugural year. “I have been living in Brevard for 15 years now, and as such have had the unique experience of seeing Viera grow to the thriving community it is today. I enjoyed an excellent education there. However, I never gained much experience with circuits or computer engineering until much later, which has changed my life, so imagine what it can do to give elementary students the chance to learn something that might impact them and our community forever.” Other FIT student volunteers include Rana Haber, Eddy Ihou, Luke Moyou, Mark Moyou, Kaleb,

Smith, Marco Rossi and Spencer Ferrini. In addition to possible future students, FIT faculty volunteers hope to gain a name for the region. “I hope that the kids grow up to become part of our dynamic and thriving Space Coast engineering culture. I want them to become the future leaders of technology and innovation, and that they do so here in our own backyard,” Otero said. “In the same way that Silicon Valley is well-known for technology and innovation, I hope these kids help the Space Coast become the place where the next generation of innovators and engineers come to make their dreams a reality.” For more information, call VCS at 321-541-1434. Military monthly luncheon moving to Viera BY LINDA WIGGINS

Monthly luncheons of the Military Officers Association of America Cape Canaveral Chapter are moving to Viera at the Indian River Colony Club, it was announced at a March 17 luncheon that hosted national MOAA leadership and a federal legislation update. U.S. lawmakers are preparing the 2016 federal budget after years of cuts — or more accurately stated, reductions in increases — to military personnel costs, said retired USAF Col. Brian Anderson, national Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) spokesman. He is one of 90 paid staffers who work out of the national MOAA organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. “Our primary focus is compensation of former, current and future service members and their families, and our mission is to communicate how important this is to the protection of the United States in attracting and retaining the best and brightest to military service in an all-volunteer force,” Anderson said. Part of Anderson’s job is to connect with the MOAA chapters, which are separate from the national organization and are both selfgoverning and self-sustaining, and require separate membership. “Only 5 percent of Americans have ever served in the military, given the aging out of

Children’s Hunger Project volunteers pack weekend meals for local hungry children March 19 in Cocoa Hyundai’s unused showroom at 1855 W. King St. in Cocoa. BY MIKE GAFFEY

Bob Barnes, founder of The Children’s Hunger Project, was having lunch recently with Cocoa Hyundai President Bruce Nelson Jr. when he asked the businessman if he knew of someone who had a large warehouse. Barnes’ nonprofit charity, which provides weekend meals for more than 1,300 needy Brevard County schoolchildren, needed a larger location than its Melbourne headquarters at Sarno and Croton roads in order to expand its efforts. On the spot, Nelson offered Barnes an unused, standalone 7,000-squarefoot automobile showroom at Cocoa Hyundai’s new location at 1855 W. King St. as a food storage site where

volunteers could pack meals, Barnes said. “It’s absolutely perfect for our needs and Bruce doesn’t charge us a penny for it,” Barnes said. Added former radio personality Timmy Vee, spokesperson for Brevard County Hundai’s charitable foundation, “Like Mr. Barnes says, we are guided by angels.” On Thursday evenings, about 50 volunteers assemble at the site of the former Buick-GMC dealership to place food purchased and delivered from Winn Dixie on trays, wrap the trays in cling wrap and place the trays in containers for delivery to 34 participating elementary schools, Barnes said. It takes about two hours to pack 1,300 meals.

Hunger Project golf tournament

The Children’s Hunger Project hosts its first golf tournament, “18 Holes for 18 Kids,” with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Saturday, May 9 at Duran Golf Club in Viera. Funds raised will provide more hungry kids with weekend meals during the 2015-2016 school year. For more information, email golf@thechildrenshungerproject.org.

Cocoa Hyundai sales manager Justin Baker said the sight of volunteers preparing meals is heartwarming. “There’s boxes and boxes of food everywhere,” Baker said. “There’s all kinds of volunteers. It’s a good thing all the way around for everybody.” The charity’s ultimate goal is to raise enough money to supply a food package to every child who comes to school hungry on Monday mornings, Barnes said. “Monday through Friday, the child, no matter what the family’s circumstances are, can get a free breakfast and a free lunch at any Brevard public school. But from the time they get their free lunch on Friday until they get their breakfast on Monday, 68 hours have gone by with that child in danger nutritionally. That’s a long time for a young child.” For the 2015-16 school year, the goal is to assist 1,600 students, Barnes said. Pineda Landings aims for mid-November opening ahead of schedule BY MIKE GAFFEY

Suntree’s Pineda Landings shopping center is on target for a mid-November opening, the president and CEO of the Melbournebased firm building the plaza said at a March 4 groundbreaking ceremony. Construction of the 50,000-squarefoot shopping center on the east side of Wickham Road at Jordan Blass Drive is a few days ahead of schedule, said Adam Broadway of Certified General Contractors. “The weather’s been good. We’ve only had one or two days of rain,” Broadway said. “There’s no problem. We’ll get there.” Pineda Landings will host 10 to 15 retail tenants and outparcel space on a 17.5-acre site. Its anchor tenant is The Fresh Market, a gourmet grocer that focuses on high-quality organic and local foods. It’s the North Carolina-based chain’s first Brevard County location. Representatives from BishopBeale, an Orlando real estate advisory firm developing Pineda Landings, joined Broadway and elected officials from Melbourne and the Brevard County

“We’re very enthusiastic about Fresh Market’s commitment to Brevard County and the Suntree area,” said Jill Rose, BishopBeale’s

vice president of retail services. Rose said Suntree stood out as a prime location for the shopping center because of the large number of higher-income households in Suntree, Viera and Merritt Island. Leasing at Pineda Landings has been “robust,” Rose said. “With so many national retailers not present in this market, it’s exciting to be able to bring these retailers to residents of the Suntree area,” she said. “We’re working with everything from restaurants to fitness to spas. There are still some key retailers we would like to target, including residential real estate, insurance, wealth management and a few others.” The project is creating 125 construction jobs, Rose said. Melbourne Mayor Kathy Meehan, who took part in the groundbreaking, said she was excited to see the new shopping center going up. “It’s encouraging for us in Brevard County and the city of Melbourne,” Meehan said. “Any time we have economic growth, I’m right there. It’s more jobs, more opportunity for us.” VV

Cocoa Beach chamber opens Viera branch office BY MIKE GAFFEY

The Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce has opened a new office in The Avenue Viera to support Viera-area chamber members and attract new ones. The new office is at the former Trade Secrets at 2290 Town Centre Ave., Suite 107, next to Panera Bread. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Volunteers staff the office. Linda Webster, CEO of the Cocoa Beach chamber, said a Viera location allows the chamber to better serve existing partners in the Viera area and increase its partnership base.

“If we are over there we can serve you, and we certainly want to make sure that need is met,” Webster said. The office will serve as an information center for visitors and potential chamber partners, as well as a meeting place for chamber partners, Webster said. “We have our partners’ brochures, their business cards and their collateral pieces over there, but we wanted it to be a community resource as well,” Webster said. The chamber plans to get involved in the Viera community, Webster said. The hosting sponsor for the March 14 St. Baldricks event at The Avenue Viera worked out of the office.

“Then, we’re working a couple of chamber events and then community events,” Webster said. With the addition of the new Viera office, the Cocoa Beach chamber now has four locations in North and Central Brevard County. The chamber’s main office is at 400 Fortenberry Road on Merritt Island. It also operates a Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourist Information Office at 8501 Astronaut Blvd. in Cape Canaveral, and an information kiosk in the Exploration Tower in Port Canaveral. For more information about the Cocoa Beach chamber, call 321-459–2200 or go to cocoabeachchamber.com. VV

County land could add homes and cars to Suntree streets BY LINDA WIGGINS

About 250 Suntree residents attended a March 18 community meeting to air their views on Brevard County’s plan to sell off for development 114 acres of land once preserved for reclaimed water disbursement. Design approved for Wickham Road traffic light in Suntree

A new Wickham Road traffic light at a Suntree intersection fraught with traffic collisions resulting in a recent death is one step closer to reality. The Brevard County Commission on March 17 approved the design of the signal at Forest Lake Drive and Golden Eagle Court, at the entrance to Eagle’s Landing subdivision. The device is expected to improve safety and encourage pedestrian traffic with a crosswalk at the western edge of the intersection across the very busy Wickham Road. Traffic lights will be attached to mast-arms over the roadways. For more information, call Patrick Woodard at 321-633-2044. VV

[…] Leaving the bulk of the world’s fossil fuel deposits untouched will require quasi-revolutionary change.” Having our children read bias-free texts, for example, plays a very important role in making that change because, yes, you guessed right, they are citizens in the making and “a more engaged citizenry is a key not only to the success of specific movements such as the resistance to the fossil fuel domination that drives climate change, but to all dimensions of sustainability.“ If you think I’m still trying to solve all the problems of the world here, I can assure you I am not. I am just trying to point out the impact that small steps we take may have in changing the world for better or worse. I believe if we all take small steps into making good changes, the world can be one step further into a better future. VV

Suntree-Viera pet rescue continues quest to save cats, dogs BY RACHEL WICK

The Suntree-Viera Pet Rescue (SVPR) has been an established rescue in Brevard County for 15 years, and has “paws” to celebrate. Since its creation, the nonprofit has saved more than 8,000 animals that would likely have been euthanized in area shelters. SVPR director Michelle Hatcher focuses her rescue efforts on the Brevard County North Animal Care Center in Titusville and frequently pulls cats because

she has found that they are adopted less frequently from the shelter than dogs. “They are high kill shelters. North is worse, north is probably about an 85 to 90 percent kill rate, just because they have no support,” Hatcher said. “That’s why I pull almost everything from the one in Titusville, because nobody wants to go there.” Hatcher’s rescue efforts are currently zoned in on Butterscotch, a Chocolate Lab/German Shepherd mix that was flown in from Alabama on January 17 via

Pilots N Paws. That plane ride was just the beginning of a challenging journey for the puppy. During her preadoption vet visit, it was discovered that Butterscotch has a heart murmur that is a result of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). Butterscotch was born with the genetic disorder and had corrective surgery that exceeded $3,000 and included the procedure, initial consultation, aftercare and follow up. Butterscotch has many cheerleaders, and SVPR organized a way for supporters to help cover the medical costs. Donations can be made at gofundme. com/Butterscotchsvpr, or at the group’s website svpr.rescuegroups.org. The resilient puppy recently was adopted. SVPR is staffed with a passionate group of volunteers and foster parents who help cushion the transition for the animals. Hatcher said “foster failures” sometimes decrease the number of available foster homes. A foster failure is someone who brings home a cat or dog and is said to “fail” because they end up adopting the pet. These adoptions are one of the reasons that SVPR is in constant search of animal lovers who are interested in fostering. “We provide the litter boxes, the food bowls,

the food, the toys and the medication. We do everything for people that want to foster,” Hatcher said. In addition to foster parents, the group is in constant need of donations, whether monetary or in the form of food, a toy or even a cuddly blanket. Before the rescues leave their foster families, Hatcher ensures that they are well equipped to enter their “forever homes.” All of the animals are spayed or

neutered, micro-chipped and are up to date on their distemper shots. Volunteer Christina Hyman has been involved with SVPR for more than a year. She also assists the organization as a foster pet parent. “I love animals, and I wanted to be involved in fostering for a very long time,” Hyman said. SVPR holds adoption events from 1 to 5 p.m. every Sunday at the Petco in Viera. VV

Inside the ropes at VEMA competition and he is ready for the challenge of expanding the business and continuing to make improvements on the public golf course designed by Joe Lee. “I think the biggest challenge will be to educate

everyone that Viera East is a public golf course, not a private country club and that Mulligan’s serves some of the best Sunday brunches in the area.” Mulligan’s Grill, located near the pro shop, is open for breakfast and lunch. VEMA recently held its annual Member/Guest Tournament with 64 competitors, including 32 guests. The team of William Oakley, Larry Biggs, Larry Lopez, and Raj Patel took first place with a score of 66. VEMA held its Ryder Cup team selection event at Mulligan’s Grill on March 10. The Red Team, captained by Viera East’s teaching professional, Mike Hogan, and the Blue team, captained by Viera East’s assistant golf professional, Lane Burney, competed in a two-day event held on March 12 and 19. Prior to joining the VECDD, he served as the general manager and director of golf for Florida State University. “I’m loving it here,” Melloh said. “The Viera area is unique. I am most looking forward to the culture and the beautiful area, to be back near the beach and Disney, but especially the schools. Being near the zoo is a big plus, too. Having a 5-year-old, these things are important.” Melloh said the local golf industry has a lot of
