Raising healthy babies starts long before they are born. Proper prenatal care and prevention of premature births have a long-term impact on the child’s health. Merritt Island mom Cori Daniels was hospitalized at 28 weeks pregnant with twin daughters Livi and Violet. The girls were monochorionic monoamniotic twins, which means the twins shared the same amniotic sac and needed extra monitoring. After 40 days in the hospital, the twins were born at 33 weeks and 6 days. They spent 17 days in the NICU in Orlando before returning home. Today, the sisters are healthy three-month-olds with typical premature birth issues but a strong outlook. Older brother Jeffrey Daniels will be 2 at the end of April. Cori Daniels credits advancements in pregnancy care and prenatal awareness for keeping her babies healthy

and in the womb longer. “The awesome care of my doctors, both here in Brevard and over in Orlando, made it possible for my girls to have a healthy start,” Daniels said. Cori and husband Jeff Daniels are now Space Coast March of Dimes ambassadors, hoping to raise awareness throughout the community on the good that this organization does for babies long before they are born. The Daniels will be among the crowd participating in the organization’s March for Babies event on April 30. The event starts at 10 a.m. at Space Coast Stadium and will feature family teams, company teams and individual walkers. Last year, there were 8,000 fewer premature births in Florida because of the March of Dimes “Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait” campaign. That translates into more than $400 million in healthcare cost savings to families and businesses in the state. In addition to fundraising,

the March of Dimes encourages proper prenatal care, including the importance of moms-to-be taking folic acid and being screened for 32 treatable birth disorders. Since 1990, March of Dimes donors have helped reduce deaths from Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome by half. “We are so grateful for the care we received and for organizations like March of Dimes that give moms and babies a better start in life,” Cori Daniels said. Swallow, smile and keep driving BY T.J. BUCKINGHAM, PASTOR CALVARY CHAPEL VIERA

I think it’s a medical fact that as your body ages, the fuse directly linked to your temper shrinks. I have experienced this phenomenon in myself, especially after starting a family with a wife and four children. Occasionally, I tease my wife about the first time I received a hearty dose of her temper. She is extremely competitive and I made the mistake of suggesting we play Monopoly during our honeymoon. It probably would have been fun, like I thought it would be, if only I had the foresight to let her win. Unfortunately, I did not. About an hour into the game, I started to gain momentum. She had bought the smaller properties, being cautious with her paper money. I, however, bought anything I landed on, which included Boardwalk and Park Place. The game hit its climax when her tiny metal shoe landed on my Boardwalk hotel. I grinned in triumph and began singing my victory song, “I am the champion” nice and loud. A moment later, I saw something resembling a small metal shoe come sailing through the air right at my forehead. Wham! Then, with a gleam in her eye, she laughed and dumped the game board over with a very sarcastic, “Whoops!” It is easy to get bent out of shape about things that don’t go our way. I have a major problem with onions and

April Specials

tomatoes. I simply cannot keep my cool when I visit the drive-through and specifically tell them not to ruin my burger by putting those awful things on it, to then wind up with a mouth full of them when I take the first bite. The last time that happened, I came dangerously close to turning the car around, driving straight back to the restaurant and giving them a piece of my mind, but fortunately my wife knew better. I think somewhere in the pit of hell, there is some horrible book where Satan keeps track of the annoying things in life that he knows we hate. He uses them most often when we are already having a bad day, knowing that if he can just get us a little angrier, we might do something really stupid, like yell at some poor teenager making burgers for minimum wage. Satan’s goal, of course, is to keep us completely useless for God. I know after a mouthful of raw onions and tomatoes, it usually takes my spirit a few days to recover. I recently came across the verse, “Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools” in Ecclesiastes. Ouch. That verse struck me even harder than the little metal shoe did, but that is a good thing. I suspect that, as the years go by, my internal fuse will continue to shrink just as I will probably keep biting into burgers covered in tomatoes and onions. However, I will keep reminding myself to swallow, smile and keep driving. VV

St. Baldrick’s event coordinator Garrett Lamp took to the main stage in The Avenue Viera’s Central Park like a circus ringmaster, directing 450 brave volunteers, young and old, male and female, into chairs to get their heads shaved March 12 to raise more than $250,000 for childhood cancer. The local event was part of the national St. Baldrick’s effort started in New York in 1999, which soon went nationwide. Lamp has been involved — and has shaved his head — for nine years, starting in Orlando. The Viera drive has raised more than $1.3 million during the past four years by shaving more than 1,900 heads, making the event the sixth largest in the nation. First responders have always played a big part of this event. A firefighter/ paramedic himself, Lamp worked in Brevard County from 1990 to 2004 before he transferred to the City of Orlando Fire Department. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the local partnership with Brevard County Fire Rescue and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Local individuals and teams made the difference. Ellen Altenburg of Melbourne and her Team Rally for Ryan and Natalie raised $38,500. Marlon Buggs of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department was a fifth time shavee. Many of the participating children raised large amounts of money, including Joey Shine, the 9-year-old son of John and Gail Shine of Rockledge, who raised $2,088, and Jaxon Cope, 10, of Merritt Island who raised $2,600. Susan Smith of Merritt Island was one of 20 volunteer beauticians. While mostly adults got shaved, it was as if the little ones were able to sense that

Holy Trinity track team wants another relay title

BY CARL KOTALA

During the past four years, the Holy Trinity girls 400 meter relay team hasn’t just been successful at the state meet. The Tigers have owned the event. So when head coach Marcus Bailey talks about his team’s potential for this season, it isn’t long before the conversation turns to the girls 400 relay. “I don’t know how many times it’s occurred, but we’ve won four straight 4x100 state titles,” Bailey said. “That’s the race that scares me the most because of the potential for miscues because of the baton and the speed, but we should win it again. “That’s our expectation going in, that we’ll be able to put together a group on the track that can win it.” The Tigers return three quarters of last year’s championship relay team. Sprinter Alisha Pound is back, but has been dealing with an injury for much of the season. Taya Britten is a superb triple jumper and will also be doing some hurdles for the Tigers in

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Holy Trinity junior Giana Gayles has the top 100-meter hurdle time in the state in Class 1A (14.72 seconds) this season and is closing in on the school record.

addition to the relay. Then there is Giana Gayles, who not only runs the 400 relay anchor, but also owns the fastest 100-meter hurdle time in Class 1A at a personal-best 14.72 seconds. After injuries caused her to

miss two months last season, and two years of competition prior to that, Gayles is ready to take a run at the school record of 14.66. “I want to get lower 14s, preferably a 14.4 by the end of the season,” Gayles said.

WHY FLORIDA PREP IS THE RIGHT CHOICE! Because leadership, creativity and character are valued as highly as academic achievement.

Lizzie Bacon will take over for the graduated McKenzie Kilborne and is also a 300-meter hurdler. Should Pound’s injury prevent her from competing, her likely replacement would be Lauren Gayles.

Though they had yet to put their “A” team together early in the season, the Tigers still had the top time in Class 1A, so the drive for five is still very much alive. As for the rest of the Tigers’ track season, it has gone just as Bailey expected. “We have a good core of girls that are back from a third-place team [at state] last year, so that team is still relatively strong,” Bailey said. “Our boys’ side is down. We don’t have the numbers we’ve normally had in the past.” Still, the boys team does have a couple of standout newcomers in senior long jumper Jalen Brown, who has gone 20-8, and freshman Seth Coleman, a standout in the 400 and the 300 hurdles. “They’re good additions to the program,” Bailey said. Other outstanding girls are distance runners Sydney Smith (1,600, 3,200 relay), Shelby (800, 3,200 relay) and Samantha Folio (1,600, 3,200 relay). The girls expect to have another strong showing at the state meet. “I project us to be the top three,” Bailey said. VV

After reaching the final four last year, many people didn’t think the Holy Trinity boys basketball team had a chance of doing it again. Not only did the Tigers, shown here after winning the district title, make it back to the final four, they reached the Class 4A state title game. BY CARL KOTALA

Their season was a lot more than just getting back to the final four. For the Holy Trinity Tigers, and their only senior, Josh Porteous, it was about proving the doubters wrong. “It was definitely a special season,” Porteous said. “Not even because of the wins, but because of who we did it with, all the doubters, and how we did it.” The Tigers may have come up a win short of their ultimate goal — winning a state championship — but they accomplished so much in getting there that there is really only one way to look at their journey. Not long after the Tigers made the final four last year some of Porteous’ former teammates began telling him Holy Trinity wouldn’t even make the playoffs this year with such a young team and only one senior leading them. “You can hear those things about your team often, but it’s about what you’re going to buy into,” Holy Trinity coach Steve Henderson said. “I don’t think our staff allowed that to happen, but I also don’t think the players ever bought into it. I don’t think Josh ever bought into

it. It was his year and we were going to do what we needed to do to get as far as we could.” A strong non-district schedule help the Tigers prepare to accomplish what no other Holy Trinity basketball team has ever done — go to back-to-back final fours. It was actually during a loss to top-ranked Master’s Academy that Henderson could see the tide start to turn. When the playoffs began, Holy Trinity really began to turn it on with strong play from Porteus, Jashaun Corbin, Corey Kaplan, Tay Griffin, Brandon Schwab, Rey Idowu, Tyler Forde, Tyrel Harris, John Wills, Carter Wagner and Preston Milo. “We went from a young team in those two to three weeks to a team that was starting to look like we could handle pretty much anybody that was going to get on the court with us,” Henderson said. Not only did the Tigers make it back to the final four, they reached the state title game where they eventually lost to Bolles of Jacksonville. It wasn’t the ultimate result they wanted, but just by getting there, the Tigers showed what a determined group can do. VV

There are a number of reasons why this could turn out to be a very good year for the Viera High boys and girls track and field teams. The Hawks have a number of Class 3A state meet medal contenders, including a pair of shot putters in senior JP Caglione and junior Kaitlyn Jensen. On top of that, the Viera boys team is deep and talented and should be contenders throughout the postseason. “We’re balanced,” Viera coach Dave Costello said. “We have very good competitors in every event. They’re basically veterans. They’re seniors and juniors that have gone through the program. We expect them to be very competitive.” Last year’s Viera team had five athletes who would place in the Class 4A state finals. This year, the Hawks are in 3A. Caglione, who finished seventh in the state in the shot put last year, believes this could be his year to bring home the gold. So far this season, he has broken the school record in the discus with a throw of 159-1 and is closing in on the mark for the shot put (53-6). “Finishing seventh in the state [last year] and losing at state in football have given me a lot of motivation to try to get a state title before I leave high school, because finishing second kind of sucks,” he said.

THIS

Jensen placed third in the state in the shot put as a sophomore and also has designs on winning a state title, especially after breaking her own school record with a throw of 38-8 last month. She and Caglione have been pushing each other for years. “We’ve been throwing together since seventh or eighth grade,” Jensen said. The Hawks also have a pair of top-notch pole vaulters in Nick Bandos — who took fourth at state last season — and Danice Loney, who has already broken the school record by clearing 10 feet. Other top girls — coached by Arlene Ferguson — include Sara Smith (high jump, sprints), Tori Nixon (100, 400), Macey Norton (sprints, long jump), Laila

Porter-Wellington (high jump, long jump), Miracle Simon (throws) and Vanessa Collard (hurdles). In addition to Caglione and Bandos, Viera’s top boys include sprinters Alex Cabrera and Tre Nixon, hurdler Malek Folston, Jamyson Boyd in the high jump, Lance Reynolds in the 400 and Zennan Bouie in the throws. The boys are also strong in the distance events where coach Ron Abel has been getting strong efforts from Ryan Miller, Sam Shaffer, Jack Gillespie, Alex Krestan, Josh Dean, Tristan Alexander, Chris Montevecchi and Mike Brunotte. “Our distance group on the boys side is the best we’ve ever had at Viera as a group,” Costello said. Viera’s Jensen makes it look easy on all fields BY CARL KOTALA

Playing multiple sports throughout a school year is hardly uncommon. But playing two sports at the same time and being an All-Star in both of them is a remarkable feat. Jensen was voted Female Athlete of the Meet at a track and field competition earlier this year. She already has broken her own school record in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 8 inches and, after finishing third at the state meet last year, she has her eyes on winning the title. In softball, Jensen was hitting a Brevard County best .659 with 13 home runs and 42 RBI. Four of those home runs came in the Battle at the Beach Tournament at Spruce Creek High, where she was named MVP. Prior to this year, the Viera record for home runs in a season was six. The career record was 12.

It was a busy day for Viera High’s Kaitlyn Jensen. Taking part in the Phillip Dummer Elite Classic track meet at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, the junior threw the shot put, raced over to throw the discus and, after making just one toss, she was off again. After all, she had a softball game to get to. All she did there was hit two home runs in the same inning as the Hawks defeated Harmony 11-1. Later that night, she called Viera High track coach Dave Costello, who told her she won the shot and the discus at an event that featured 27 teams. It was a busy day, all right. No wonder both Costello and Viera softball coach Dale Pierce say Jensen is easily one of the best athletes they’ve ever coached.

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

Viera High junior Kaitlyn Jensen is breaking records on the track and on the softball field for the Hawks this spring.

“She’s matured into an absolutely fabulous ballplayer this year,” Pierce said. Softball is the main sport for Jensen, who has verbally

committed to play at UCF. She usually goes to track practice on Wednesdays and works more on her technique at home. Oh, she’s also a straight-A student. Does it ever get to be too much? “No, I love it,” Jensen said. “I love it that I always have something to do. Even on off days or weekends, I go to the fields with my dad and my sister.” Costello believes if Jensen were committed to track full time, she could be throwing more than 40 feet in the shot and 140 in the discus (her best is 120). But neither Costello nor new throwing

coach Kevin Maloney are complaining. They have both been impressed with Jensen’s competitive drive. “She’s a great athlete to begin with, and she’s very coachable,” Maloney said. “She wants to do it, whether it’s softball or track. The fact that she tries to do two is amazing. She’s an All-Star in both.” That’s why, in part, it could be quite a year for the Hawks. In addition to her success on the track, the softball team is 19-1 and could be on the brink of a trip to the final four after reaching the regional final last year. “We’re doing awesome,” Jensen said. “I really think we have a chance to go to states. We’ve just really come together as a team. We work so hard. We got a new (assistant) coach, Casey Vassallo, and physically and mentally she’s helped us grow so much. I feel so much more confident at the plate. And the team chemistry has been awesome.” If it sounds like there is nothing Jensen can’t do if she puts her mind to it, well, you’re probably right. In addition to softball and track, she’s also an excellent volleyball player. “She is definitely one of the most athletic girls I’ve ever coached in my life,” Pierce said. “The scary thing is, she’s only a junior. What’s she going to be like next year?” VV

Normally when you hear the word hurricane, you think, “Oh, no,” but in this case, it was the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour that hit Baytree National Golf Links in Melbourne Feb. 27 and 28. Brilliant sunlit skies greeted the 36 golfers, mostly from the Midwest and Florida, but at least one, Tom Stafford, journeyed from Beaconsfield, Quebec, Canada to participate in this premier event. Broken down by male and female in various age groupings, most of these golfers had the training, experience and mental fortitude to handle a course the caliber of Baytree National. Hurricane Junior Golf Tour is headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla., and Reese Moseley, director of rules and competitions, was on hand to provide overall supervision with help from starter Dennis Sherlock and assistant Aaron Pinkerton. Moseley’s team helps to provide guidance before and after each player’s round of golf, but not during the actual competition. This is where the mental toughness of each individual player comes into play. But in this type of tournament, players themselves mentor each other. On the practice green, Christopher Lee, known as Poppy, was seen giving putting advice to Christiana Marcellus as well as verbal encouragement. Both are

from Loxahatchee. At this point in their budding careers, the Golden Rule — helping each other as you would have others help you — is a huge motivating factor as they grow physically as well as mentally. Some of the various age group winners included Evan Bone from Louisville, Ky., with a two-day total of 161 in the Boys 14 to 15 category. In the Boys 16 to 18 age group, Callum Brown, of Stuart, shot a 151 and took home the first place trophy. Making it a family affair, Orlando twins Caroline Hwang took first with a 150 and Victoria Hwang came in second with a 153 in the Girls 14 to 18 age group. Golfers are always striving to make the ball disappear into the cup, but Brittney Calhoun of Kissimee, took magic to a whole new level while blasting from a greenside bunker nestled between the green and a lake on the 18th hole. With a mighty swing, the golf ball began floating out of the bunker just ahead of a

Attending classes at Suntree’s Downtown Yoga helped Sal Gianfortune lose 90 pounds. BY KATIE PARSONS

The process of getting in shape looks differently for each person. Joining a traditional gym and dieting are common ways people try to lose weight and get healthy, but they aren’t the only routes that work. While it may not be the first activity that comes to mind, the consistent practice of yoga can lead to long-term weight loss, even for those facing obesity issues. Just ask Sal Gianfortune. After a few years toying with yoga workouts at home, he

decided to seek professional help. He started attending classes at the Suntree location of Downtown Yoga one day per week. As he gained more confidence, he started going more often and now visits an average of five

times per week. That confidence inspired him to change a lot more in his life — including his diet. In just 18 months, he lost 90 pounds from the workouts and regained his health. “I help people retire for a living and have a high quality of life when they do it. I realized I wasn’t really practicing what I preach. I knew I needed to get healthy,” Gianfortune, VP and financial advisor at PNC Bank, said. He said that yoga helped him reset more than his physical priorities and refocus on what he needed in life to be healthy and happy. Annette Armstrong is the owner of Downtown Yoga’s two locations and says that the physical portion of yoga practice is just a small part of its benefits. “Yoga tends to get people to a point where a shift occurs, mentally. It gets you closer to yourself, in comfortable and uncomfortable ways,” Armstrong said. “That inspires change beyond physicality.” Having a place to go to practice was pivotal to Gianfortune’s success, he says. “You can watch videos at home and do it yourself, but the truth is that having that professional help and energy makes you want to go more often,” he said. “Plus you have people cheering you on.” Armstrong says having that yoga community really does make a difference in the journey. “I always encourage people to ‘start where you are,’ make that connection no matter what your fitness level,” Armstrong said. “It’s really about an ability to connect with yourself.” VV

Future Problem Solving team heads to state competition BY CARL KOTALA

Stacey Torkelson wants to be a teacher one day. So when the Holy Trinity student sat down with other members of the school’s Future Problem Solving (FPS) team last year to come up with a project, they had a number of different areas to choose from — environmental issues, civil issues or educational. They decided to go with education. It was Torkelson, now a senior, who came up with the idea of creating a peer tutoring and mentoring program for seventh and eighth graders at Stone Middle School. The aim was to help students set academic achievement goals and help them think beyond high school. From March 31 to April 2, Holy Trinity’s FPS team made up of Torkelson, Olivia Pitten, Drew DeSalvo, Kathy Jara, Lucy Thomas, Hannah

Lee, Sydney Sergis and Sarah Braddock will be in Orlando to compete in the state competition. They will present their project, A Future Set in Stone, to a panel of judges

in the Community Problem Solving division. The students have been turning in materials since August, presenting their project proposal, presenting a plan of action and

providing updates including any roadblocks they faced and how they overcame them. At the state competition, there will be project boards — much like at a science fair — and the group of students will be interviewed. When the tutoring and mentoring program first began last year, it was done in a classroom with just six Stone Middle School students. Now, they’ve overcome a roadblock by meeting in the cafeteria and the number of children they help now totals 45. In order to meet the demand for tutors, Holy Trinity’s FPS team needed help. They enlisted classmates, who are getting community service credit, and now there are usually 17 to 18 tutors that head to Stone Middle School every Tuesday. Working with the seventh and eighth graders has

turned out to be an amazing experience, especially for Torkelson, who was selected Stone Middle School’s Youth Volunteer of the Year and was honored by Brevard County Public Schools at their ABC Awards (Applauding Brevard’s Champions). “We went in expecting to see changes in grades, which we have — one kid came up from an F to a B, which is huge — but on the mentor side, the relationships have been crazy,” said Torkelson, now a senior. “I have one girl I’ve been working with one-on-one … I’ve worked with her for two years now as a tutor. As it’s coming to a close, it’s actually really sad. “We have them fill out an end-of-the-year survey for the eighth graders about the program and what they got out of it. Three or four of them compared it to a second family. So it’s been really rewarding.” VV

A lesson plan you can eat; VCS students enjoying garden project BY CARL KOTALA

The kindergarteners in AnnMarie LeBeau’s class at Viera Charter School are out in full force. Some have watering cans. Others have a bottle of Miracle-Gro or gardening tools they use to pull out weeds. It’s all part of a garden project the school has set up for children from kindergarten through fifth grade with a little help from the Viera Company. The students have planted carrots and radishes, strawberries and lettuce. Even watermelon and flowers. And the best part is, they’re taking care of it themselves, learning about cooperation and working together as a team. “They’re enjoying it because it’s hands-on learning,” LeBeau said. “Using the science curriculum, they’re learning about the life cycle of plants, how to take care of plants, what plants need. Then they get to see

the end results a couple of months down the road when everything starts to bloom. “Whenever they’re actively involved, that’s when they learn the most.”

Holy Trinity makes Landi Head of School

Each class has its own flower bed and the students each have their own jobs, whether it be watering, fertilizing or maintenance. They wear gloves at all times. In addition to providing

some advice, the Viera Company provided seeds for the lettuce and the radishes. “They told us the best way to lay it out, how much fertilizer to give it. They Miracle-Gro it once a week, water it three

times a week,” Viera Charter assistant principal Thomas Armstrong said. “Having that communication with the Duda Ranch was key in getting the kids started. The kids do all the work.” Madison Hirsche, a first grader at Viera Charter School, got to plant a flower in her class’s flower bed. She said the project is fun. “I like that there’s lots of flowers and there’s stuff growing,” she said. While this is the first year of the project, the school plans to make it an ongoing learning experience for the students. After all, not only do the children get to learn a lot of valuable lessons, they can also get a nutritious snack out of it, too. “The big reward will be in April when things start growing,” Armstrong said. “We’re hoping by the end of April we can pull a few carrots out, some radishes out and maybe a head or two of lettuce. We’re definitely hoping for a few strawberries.” VV

James Landi has been named the school’s permanent Head of School by the Board of Trustees. “He has supported the Trustees in the discussion of initiatives for the long-term benefit of our school, beyond the traditional role of an interim leader and we see value in continuing to bring his significant experience to bear in support of our students and faculty, and in all areas of our program: spiritual, academic and character development,” Holy Trinity Board chair Dana Kilborne said. ‘Sweetheart Dance’ highlights importance of friends, family, community BY LINDA WIGGINS P HOTOS BY JILL BLUE-GAINES

The annual Sweetheart Dance at Suntree Elementary School Feb. 26 was a way to celebrate the important relationship girls have with their fathers or other important adults in their lives, organizers said. “While many girls chose their fathers, we recognize that some girls have other adults in their lives whom they admire and look up to as well. This was an evening to honor the special relationship between a daughter and her father or other important adult,” said Elaine Grande, who cochaired the PTO event with fellow parent volunteer Mimi Janardhan. “We created a wonderful night surrounded by lollipops, gumdrops and a candy-decorated selfie photo

The food was donated by the parents, the PTO and local businesses, including Perkins, the Produce Place of Suntree and Sam’s Club Melbourne. Addy Rose Salon and Imperial Day Spa donated gift certificates for manicures, pedicures and haircuts to the Game of Chance. “Every year, the girls create a keepsake by surprising their chaperone with a special message,” said Tina Pacleb, parent volunteer coordinator of the elaborate décor. “This year our wall of messages was adorable candy cut-outs expressing why they are the girls’ sweethearts. We hope the tradition continues every year because it is important to have events like this to highlight the importance of friends, family and the community.” VV

You are not just a number,” she said. A Miami native, Whitman spent three years as captain of the Miami Dolphin’s cheerleading team. She graduated from Charron Williams Nursing School and raised two children. Building from her past experiences and education, she decided to pursue a career in medical skin care and started in the field in 2004. Top Dog Express has a new name. BY GEORGE WHITE

Top Dog Express has changed its name along with a change in its parent company but will remain a full-service car wash and detail center with an oil change department. The business, located at 7940 N. Wickham Rd., is now called Mister Car Wash and Mister Express Lube, as of the sign change on March 18. Top Dog Express originally opened seven years ago. Services and staffing will mostly remain the same with some services having a price reduction, said Mike Strange, general manager of the lube side of the business, which includes tire rotation.

VIERA VOICE Marc Rhodes

The one exception is a $2 car wash side service increase that comes with additional product on the dashboard to help preserve it from heat damage. “Our services are pretty much staying the same but the company manufactures its own products,” said wash side general manager Chris Naulty. In 2015, Mister Car Wash acquired three Top Dog Express car washes in Lake Mary, Melbourne and Sanford. It now operates 164 car washes in 19 states. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 321-751-3577. VV

SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

The Melbourne Municipal Band (MMB) celebrates the human spirit in song when it presents Music of the People at 7:30 p.m. April 13 and 14 at the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd. There is no charge and tickets are not required. “This is a special program which draws on music that inspires people to come together, to appreciate their heritage and to take care of each other,” conductor Staci Cleveland said. “We’ll feature selections from all over the world that move us to embrace our better natures.” The April concert will also include another in the MMB’s new Brevard’s Brightest Stars program segment, which showcases the talents of highly accomplished local music students. Sarah Bieseck, 11, who has won the Florida State Fiddle Contest for the past three years, will perform “Bluegrass in the Backwoods” and “Doc Harris the Fisherman,” accompanied by her father, Mark Biesack, who plays acoustic guitar. Doors open at 6:30 and pre-show entertainment will be provided by the Sunshine Brass Quintet. Collections for the band’s PING program — Providing Instruments for a New Generation — will take place at the concert. PING accepts donations of musical instruments and money, which are then passed on to Brevard Public Schools for use by students who would not otherwise be able to obtain an instrument. PING is in its third year and has collected 25 instruments so far. VV

The March 10 meeting was held at Pizza Gallery.

Compassionate, Experienced and Honored to Represent You. I represent individual and business clients in:

Dr. Mukesh Aggarwal is a board certified ophthalmologist serving Brevard County since 1980. The founder of Eye Clinic & Laser Institute, with offices on Merritt Island, Titusville, Viera and West Melbourne, Aggarwal had a calling since childhood to help others. The best way he saw to accomplish this was to be a doctor. He is considered one of the top ophthalmologists in the area. The result of his success and gratitude refocused his efforts on giving back and helping those who do not have access to quality care. Below is an interview with Aggarwal on his latest pilgrimage to Delhi, India in December 2015. VV: How did you become involved in doing charitable mission work? MA: I started doing mission work in 1988. I was invited by Dr. R.A. Henriques to assist in providing eye exams in the poorest barrios in Santo Domingo. Locally, I donate my time by working with the Rotary Club, Lions Club and The Brevard Health Alliance. Since then, I have worked with Maheshwar Foundation which has helped revive two dormant hospitals and helped build and supports others. VV: Tell me something about the people you helped. MA: The people we saw are the ones with the most need. They are very humble and have no means. Many travel 30 miles barefoot to these camps. These missions are in remote areas of the country. The people don’t have basic necessities such as electricity, plumbing, potable water. VV: What did you most enjoy about working with charitable organizations/ foundations? MA: The ability to help those people that otherwise would not have access to care. They are more often times

forgotten and/or neglected. Most of the people we see are limited in education, are illiterate and do not have the basic means or knowledge to seek help. VV: What most encouraged you in your work? MA: That I was not alone in my belief in giving of yourself to help others that are less fortunate. It was very satisfying seeing doctors from previous missions and meeting new ones that are quite successful in their own right and highly respected within the medical community giving of their time to assist us in rendering help to the needy. I want to emphasize that we did this in late December during our Christmas break and we were not staying in fancy hotel rooms. VV: Were you able to purchase medicine, supplies and materials you needed for the mission? How? MA: Some of the doctors, myself included, donate from our own pockets any medicine that can be of use to these people. We are fortunate to have a partnership with doctors and companies within the country that lend their support as well as

international groups such as Rotary and Lions Club. VV: What was a typical day for you? MA: It was hectic. We had a two-day window to see as many patients that time allowed. I saw in excess of 350 cases [and provided] quality vision exams. My wife, Dr. Rajee Paul, who is a general practitioner, saw over 900 cases. You start very early and you finish late in the evening. It is quite exhausting, but the rewards and the rejuvenation one feels by giving back keeps us going. VV: What was the biggest surprise about the country? The people? Yourself? MA: It doesn’t take long to realize what a great country the United States is and how lucky we are. Just the basic infrastructure that we take for granted. Our public utilities. Our roadways. I laugh thinking about when the power or Internet goes down for 30 minutes and how I’m inconvenienced by that. I hope as you read this that you consider the power in giving … or in the spirit of giving. To be motivated, however possible, to give to others. Many times it is through money, donating food, clothing, etc. Sometimes it is as basic as donating your time. Being there. We all can make a difference. I am still surprised that a country like India that has made some significant advances in technology and industry has forgotten about the poor and the weak. They are outcasts in today’s world. I see the same thing happening to our less fortunate here at home. VV For more information about the Maheshwar Foundation, go to maheshwar-foundation.org.

Senior athletes and little league play together to help others

BY GEORGE WHITE

Opening day for the 19th year of the Viera Suntree Little League March 5 at Viera Regional Park resulted in another large pile of used equipment for kids in need. The difference this year is that, instead of all of it going to children in the Dominican Republic, half the donated items will go to players on local teams. Chris Conneen, owner and founder of Pizza Gallery in Viera, started the ball rolling for the used equipment drive three years ago. “We do an outreach every month and this was associated with spring break and spring training, so we said anybody who brings us a used piece of equipment will get a free pizza,” he said. “It was a great response and we got 1,000 pieces of equipment and about the same amount each year. This equipment is going to the Dominican Republic and

go to kids that don’t have anything. Some of it this year is going to stay locally and go to kids in Brevard County.” Conneen described himself as a “connector” between John Glendenning, president of the Viera Suntree Little League, and the Florida Senior Sports Association and its executive director Ed Rose of Melbourne who helped get items shipped for free to the Dominican Republic. “These two guys started it with the little league donations and we got on board,” Rose said. “It warms the pockets of your heart to see this equipment when they see it down there. They were using cereal boxes for gloves. [Little league officials] have requested that half of it goes to local communities too and we think it makes a lot of sense. Pizza Gallery giving back to the community really started this.” Community groups with access to young athletes

are being contacted to help distribute the donated equipment, including soccer balls, “to take care of some of

our own,” Glendenning said. “Our vision is to teach life lessons, for all kids to have fun and to develop every kid.

Part of teaching life lessons is this: giving back,” he said. Opening day pageantry began with more than 700 players on 60 teams taking the field at the same time, followed by a home run derby and a friendly softball game between Rose’s Legends team and the Viera Suntree Little League coaches and board members. “We’re the biggest league in the county — we’re proud of that. We’re at the 19th year now so next year will be really big for us,” Glendenning said. Rose praised the used equipment drive with helping get his group involved for the benefit of Dominican Republic and now, players in Brevard County. “I would have never even been involved had these guys not started it. It started with a good gesture and we got involved,” he said. “It was a big ripple effect,” Conneen said. VV

Funding fuels rescues from skies for memory impaired BY LINDA WIGGINS

A flight-assisted effort to quickly locate patients with dementia who wander from their homes has been reborn thanks to recent enhancements in technology and funding. Children and adults of any age with cognitive impairment also benefit. Participants in the Project Lifesaver program wear a special wrist or ankle bracelet equipped with a small transmitter that emits a signal law enforcement officers can track when someone goes missing. Search times have been reduced from days and hours, to minutes. Average recovery times are well under 30 minutes. “There have been so many changes, it is fair to say it is brand new,” said Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Joseph Downs, program coordinator. Project Lifesaver was launched in Virginia in 1999 and later expanded to include Brevard County, and now operates in 550 agencies in 41 states. Its purpose has been expanded to include children and adults with autism, Down syndrome and similar challenges, including traumatic brain injuries. Anyone interested can find out more about the program at a 10 a.m. Sunday, April 10 presentation during the Autism Conference and Resource Fair at the Melbourne Auditorium free and open to the public. “Our initial equipment could only get a signal a few blocks,” said Downs, president of TRIAD, a collaboration of elder care agencies, BCSO and municipal law enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office. TRIAD provides a network of collaborators, reviews the applications and provides some funding, and BCSO operates the rescue effort. “Now we can track five

to six miles on the ground and 10 miles by helicopter,” Downs added. “Also, battery life has been extended in the transmitter devices. And thanks to additional funding, we can do this virtually at no charge to the loved one and families.” Rapid response time is vital

to preserving life, pilot John Coppola said. “In Florida, you have a lot of bodies of water. [Memory- and cognitivelyimpaired persons who wander] tend to be attracted to water, especially men, and can drown themselves, whether intentionally or unintentionally, if you don’t get to them quickly.” The veteran search-andrescue hero has seen search times reduced from six hours to 15 minutes after one

formerly reluctant caregiver put a Project Lifesaver bracelet on his wife. Minutes count when factoring in other environmental dangers as well, Downs said. “If you don’t find someone right away, they can fall and injure themselves or worse,

become victims of crime, die from dehydration or exposure to heat or cold,” Downs said. What does it feel like to be on the rescuing end? “That initial take-off is

a huge stressor because you don’t know what the situation is,” said tactical flight officer Brandon McIntyre, who operates the highly sensitive radio frequency receiver. “Then you start to get that signal in your ear, and it gets stronger and stronger until you are right on top of them and you direct ground crew to their location. And then to hear the signal from the ground that they have them and they’re safe, there’s no greater feeling of relief.” Added Coppola, “There’s nothing nicer than having someone who is so worried about a family member and then you make them tremendously happy to make their family whole again.” Added Downs, “It’s gratifying to hear the

sincere thanks from family members whose loved ones have been safely recovered, especially those who were initially reluctant to have a parent or spouse put on a device. They become some of our most important spokespersons.” There are 188 persons registered in Brevard and Downs hopes the number will grow. To qualify, participants must be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other dementia, Down syndrome or autism, or cognitive impairment such as brain trauma, must not have driving privileges and must have a caregiver. threatening to sue for back taxes or informing the resident they have a refund due to a change in the law. The caller is happy to provide the refund if you only supply them your bank account numbers or credit card information,” Helin said, which allow access to the victims funds. “It is mind boggling what these scams will come up with and how professional they can sometimes come across. Residents need to know what to look for in a scam and who to call if they are suspicious of a call they received.” Guest speakers will include Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey and State Attorney Phil Archer of Brevard and Seminole counties. Law enforcement arms seniors with information to Fight Back

BY LINDA WIGGINS

Brevard County TRIAD will host Fight Back Brevard from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 12 at Calvary Chapel, Viera Campus, 2852 Fellowship Place. Scams, identity theft, fraud and using crime prevention strategies will be on the agenda. “Programs like this are very important to residents, especially seniors, to let them know what’s happening,” said Jennifer Helin, public information official for TRIAD, a collaboration of law enforcement agencies, the state attorney’s office and elder care agencies and providers. “This tax season we have heard of so many phone calls from the IRS either

We also discussed ways pollution can be avoided. “Let’s make signs about all that so people know what Considered a very not to do,” suggested one of successful risk taker, Elon them. The students showed Musk follows his passion interest in helping solve and vision to accomplish the problem and wanted to two very ambitious goals: be proactive — preventing “Reduce global warming instead of simply fixing. ice accumulation, and use the microprocessors in the panels to allow panels to communicate with each other, to a central control station, and to vehicles. This is not too far from happening since the research to move toward road and highway installations is under way here in the U.S. Julie Brusaw, who has an M.A in counseling psychology, had the idea and Scott Brusaw, who has an M.S. in electrical engineering, created the product. As Elon Musk said, “it is possible for ordinary people to choose to be extraordinary.” The Brusaws seem to have done just that. The motivation for being extraordinary tends to come mostly from our early years. That’s why 3Rs and Beyond created a program series called Connect to Help Protect, a program with the goal to assist reestablishing the connection between individuals and the natural world to help them better understand the impact that

their actions have on the environment and on lives. The series engages participants and facilitates their transition to become agents of change. We hope to reach as many individuals as possible in our community and would like to hear from you if you are interested in partnering with us in this endeavor. Investing in programs like Connect to Help Protect is investing in our future because, as cliché as it may sound, kids are the future and if we listen to their insights, we can learn a lot and open up doors to solutions we couldn’t even imagine possible. Earth Day is April 22. Let’s not only celebrate the day Senator Gaylord Nelson placed environmental protection onto the national political agenda back in 1970; let’s start talking about ideas and dare to give them a chance to become future options for a better Earth. Pet of the Month

Meet Fred Fred is amazing. He is a rescue dog who was adopted 14 years ago. It was the best thing this family could have done. Fred loves food, sleeping and snuggling. He is very frisky for a dog his age. He doesn’t look a day over 6.

Meet Lexi Lexi is a 1-year-old apple head chihuahua. We call her the anti-chihuahua. She is sweet to every living soul, loves to play fetch and loves hopping on the golf cart to get the kids from school.
