Ashley Norton has always been good at climbing things. but this will be the rock climbing wall adventure of a lifetime. The 18-year-old Viera High graduate has been invited to compete at the IFC World Youth Championship, which will take place Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 on Siloso Beach, located on Sentosa Island in Singapore. “I’m so grateful that I’m getting an opportunity to do this,” Norton said. “It’s so exciting to me.” Norton finished 10th in speed climbing at the Sports Climbing Series (SCS) Youth National Championships

in Atlanta last month. It was the 10th year she had competed at the nationals, and because of age limitations, it was also her last. The top four finishers received invitations to compete at the world championships. Two of those were accepted, but one by one, other climbers declined. When Ashley heard that, she and her family wondered if that meant an invitation would be coming her way. They talked about it at dinner on July 18. Rabbi Patricia Ernest Hickman still misses her mother. That will never change — even 1 1/2 years after Shirley Ernest’s death. A promise that eventually was fulfilled makes it easier. On June 21 at the Free Synagogue of Flushing in New York, Hickman was ordained a rabbi. She already was the cantor and spiritual leader at Temple Israel in Viera. “Before my mother died, she said to me, ‘Will you become a rabbi?’ I told her, ‘Yes, mom, I promise.’ I never imagined it when I was child growing up with my dad (Charles) and mom.’’ See Rabbi, Page 4

It’s been an amazing season for the Viera Suntree Little League, and it’s not over yet. The VSLL Juniors baseball team won the sectional tournament on July 21 and were headed off to the state tournament in Bradenton, hosted by the Braden River Little League. Of the five VSLL teams to win a district championship, the Juniors were the only team still playing as of July 22. The Juniors were also one of three VSLL teams to win a sectional title and advance to the state tournament, joining the Majors softball and 1011 baseball teams. Two other teams—Majors baseball and 9-10 baseball —lost in the championship game of their respective sectional tournaments. VV
