Viera High grad hopes to climb to new heights in Singapore By Carl Kotala
Ashley Norton has always been good at climbing things. but this will be the rock climbing wall adventure of a lifetime. The 18-year-old Viera High graduate has been invited to compete at the IFC World Youth Championship, which will take place Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 on Siloso Beach, located on Sentosa Island in Singapore. “I’m so grateful that I’m getting an opportunity to do this,” Norton said. “It’s so exciting to me.” Norton finished 10th in speed climbing at the Sports Climbing Series (SCS) Youth National Championships

in Atlanta last month. It was the 10th year she had competed at the nationals, and because of age limitations, it was also her last. The top four finishers received invitations to compete at the world championships. Two of those were accepted, but one by one, other climbers declined. When Ashley heard that, she and her family wondered if that meant an invitation would be coming her way. They talked about it at dinner on July 18. Later that night, Ashley’s father, Jim, checked his email. Sure enough … See Rock Climbing, Page 30

Rabbi Patricia Ernest Hickman still misses her mother. That will never change — even 1 1/2 years after Shirley Ernest’s death. A promise that eventually was fulfilled makes it easier. On June 21 at the Free Synagogue of Flushing in New York, Hickman was ordained a rabbi. She already was the cantor and spiritual leader at Temple Israel in Viera. “Before my mother died, she said to me, ‘Will you become a rabbi?’ I told her, ‘Yes, mom, I promise.’ I never imagined it when I was child growing up with my dad (Charles) and mom.’’ See Rabbi, Page 4

It’s been an amazing season for the Viera Suntree Little League, and it’s not over yet. The VSLL Juniors baseball team won the sectional tournament on July 21 and were headed off to the state tournament in Bradenton, hosted by the Braden River Little League. Of the five VSLL teams to win a district championship, the Juniors were the only team still playing as of July 22. The Juniors were also one of three VSLL teams to win a sectional title and advance to the state tournament, joining the Majors softball and 1011 baseball teams. Two other teams—Majors baseball and 9-10 baseball —lost in the championship game of their respective sectional tournaments. VV

Sharing the gift of life By George White
Organ donors give more than the gift of life for patients stricken with catastrophic illness, some of which are too ill for the procedures which could mean a cure. Donors give hope. Mother of three, Kim Gabriel, of Suntree, formerly an executive with Space Coast Habitat for Humanity, needs a heart transplant. “I had this episode after a board meeting where I felt light-headed and dizzy and sick to my stomach. I went to the ER the next day and they found that I had a heart murmur and that my ejection fraction (how well the heart is pumping) was low,’’ she said. Subsequent complications left Gabriel gravely ill. “My cardiologist told my family to prepare for the worst. I asked him if I was going to make it and he said, ‘I’m trying,’ ” she said. A trip to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville confirmed the journey Gabriel must endure to get back to a life of health, albeit on expensive
anti-rejection drugs. She was officially put on the transplant list April 27. “I was told that my heart was no longer intact and that my future was in transplant,’’ she said. The reality of her challenge has made Gabriel clear about the importance of donors, even to the point of becoming a donor herself. “It’s very different to realize that someone else has to die for me to begin life again. Part of my prayers now are for the family of that person,’’ she said. Donors, she said, “know exactly what life’s about. Nobody wants to die but life is a gift to be shared.” Bill Hahn developed Type 1 diabetes at age 26 and complications from the disease required a combination kidney/ pancreas transplant which he had on New Year’s Eve 2008 at Shands Medical Center in Gainesville. “My donor was a 22-yearold male and I’m trying to get in touch with his family to thank them. It’s a great gift,’’ he said. Signing the back of your
driver’s license to become a donor shows compassion and helps spare families a difficult decision in the event of tragedy. “It’s not anything you can take with you. You take your soul, but not your body,’’ he said. Hahn attended the National Transplant Games in 2010 but was unable to compete because of a paperwork problem. But he found out something surprisingly profound that made him want to find a way to give back. “The most amazing people

Kim Gabriel, who has been on the waiting list for a heart transplant since April 27, 2012, hopes with her family, that an eligible donor will help save her life.
I met were donor families, they were everywhere supporting the people who received the transplants. It shows you how special that connection is. It’s a real convergence of humanity,’’ he said. Hahn organized the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) “Footprints In The Sand” Kidney Beach Walk, which included a sand castle building contest and attracted 50 teams and 400 people that helped raise $50,000. “I tried to make it a family event that benefits the gift of life. We’re already making plans for next year.’’ he said. To learn more about organ donations, visit organdonor. gov or call 888-894-6361. VV

If not for the age of the internet, Hickman likely never would have become one of the estimated 1,000 female rabbis. She would have had to leave Florida to complete her studies. “That was the biggest obstacle,’’ said Hickman, who has served at Temple Israel for the past nine years. “I wasn’t living in a city with a seminary. I was able to find another way - a seminary without walls. I couldn’t leave and I didn’t want to leave with my mother ill.’’ The Rabbinical Academy, which is based in the suburb of Queens in New York City, accepted her application for the two-year program. Her years of devoted service as a spiritual leader at synagogues in Livingston, N.J., Jacksonville, Maryland and locally at Temple Israel made her a perfect candidate when combined with her academic background. The 60-year-old Hickman received her bachelor’s degree in 1973 from the Manhattan School of Music and earned her master’s degree in Sacred Music from Hebrew Union College in 1989. “I had to send in sermons, proof of classes that I had taught in religion, the curriculum and a wealth of things that I had saved,’’ said Hickman, who lives in Satellite Beach with her husband Ray and their five cats. “I never stopped - there was always something to learn. I want to learn to teach to others and continue the chain of tradition.’’ “I already had the foundation; they could look at the record and see what I was doing here. The program was tailored specifically for our further work and studies. I studied Jewish philosophy

and advanced works in Hebrew. I translated Hebrew texts and works with the Talmud as well.’’ Temple Israel will be bolstered as Hickman makes the transition from cantor to rabbi. “I want to do as much teaching as my schedule will allow,’’ said Hickman, who grew up in Oceanside, N.Y. on Long Island. “I’m more passionate now. I want to continue my interfaith work and be a positive force in the community. I see myself as a leader of causes.’’ Some fights will be more worthy than others. As a woman rabbi, Hickman knows there will be some who never will accept her advanced role. “I know (the concept of women rabbis) still bothers some of the more traditional orthodox believers,’’ Hickman said. “The people here have been accepting, but others might prefer to go to another temple. I have encountered that kind of prejudice and in my cantor’s role as well.’’

Regina Jones of Berlin, Germany became the first woman to be ordained a rabbi in 1935. Sally Priesand was the first female in the United States to be ordained a rabbi in Reform Judaism in 1972. While serving as the spiritual leader at a Jacksonville synagogue in 1995, Hickman dealt well with a stressful situation and knew she could become a rabbi. “Both rabbis left the synagogue without a chance to hire someone before the high holy days,’’ said Hickman, whose husband, Ray, was the vice president and general manager of public radio station WJCT at the time. “Instead of falling apart, I thrived and I grew. I loved it and knew that I needed to set a goal for myself.’’ The couple’s daughter, Jennifer Hickman, is studying at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Another daughter, Gabrielle Chuchro, is married to Rob Chuchro, who is a Navy Seal. Florida has become home for the native New Yorker. “I still have family up there,’’ said Hickman, who fought off breast cancer in 1998. “I’ll go there once or twice a year on a pilgrimage to take in a show and see a museum. I have to get my New York fix.’’ Each day, the roundtrip drive from Satellite Beach to Viera is a time for thought. “I love the ocean and going over the causeway,’’ Hickman said. “I can look at the beauty, the boats and the lights and I get a great sense of peace. It’s a wonderful way to start the day and end the day.’’ VV

Russ Barnes of Suntree updates his signature with help from Supervisor of Elections staff on Friday, June 15, 2012. By Linda Wiggins
When you receive a voter registration card and letter in the mail this month, don’t just toss it out because you’re already registered. Brevard County Supervisor of Elections Lori Scott wants to put your fresh John Hancock on the voter rolls. “Handwriting and signatures can change over time, and if it gets to a point that our computers don’t match the one on file with the form you sign when you vote, it will get tossed out,” Scott said. Russ Barnes of Suntree moved to Brevard and registered to vote in 1958, in the time of a vast Democrat majority. “That’s the way you had to register then if you wanted to vote on anything then,”
Barnes said, referring to the primaries that occur in August. Voter mood isn’t the only thing that changed in those 54 years, with the majority of elected officials and their constituents now Republican. Barnes’ signature had wavered over time. Voter registration staff printed out his old signature, held on file before the invention of the computer scanner, and scanned into the system since along with all other voter signatures. “I never would have thought about my signature changing,” he said as he filled out his new signature card. Many voters will get a card in the mail informing them of changes in their district number or polling place, as population shifts from the 2010 U.S. Census redraw districts and cost
cutting at the elections office streamlines the number of ballot locations. “This is the perfect opportunity to come in and update your signature,” said Scott, adding that signatures that change over time are not the only thing to void a vote cast. “With the increase in absentee mail-in ballots we are seeing parents sign for students at college, husbands sign for wives and vice versa,” Scott said. “In each case, the vote is cast out. It’s important if someone is going to vote absentee that the ballot reach them, that they vote, then sign and mail it back personally.” For more information or to find the closest Voter Registration office, go to VoteBrevard.com or call 321-633-2124.VV

Association residential surveillance cameras We regularly receive phone calls either inquiring or complaining about surveillance cameras. Before you invest in a surveillance system, there are a few things you may want to consider. Personal safety and privacy are two ideals everyone wants in a community, but they can collide. If your association does not have a written policy, I suggest contacting your attorney for assistance. Associations should require a plot plan showing the camera locations in relation to neighboring structures, a property survey and specifications on the size, shape and angle of view of the camera. The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast is pleased to announce that the onerous provisions of Florida’s 2011 voter registration law have ended. The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast heralds this victory and welcomes the opportunity to once again register voters in Brevard County. of onerous burdens on organizations like the League of Women Voters who help citizens register to vote. One of the most egregious sections which was overturned required voter registration forms to be turned in within 48 hours after they were collected — even in the event of a hurricane. The sections that were blocked under the ruling by Judge Robert Hinkle made it clear that voter registration drives are constitutionally-protected activities. The league was one of the primary litigants in the lawsuit that resulted in the May 31 ruling. Our members all across Brevard County are excited about our ability to once again play a pivotal role in bringing new voices and voters into our democratic process. Many reports have shown that Florida is
lagging in new registrations compared to 2008, and there are many communities such as students, the disabled, the elderly, minorities and lowincome groups who depend on the league to help them get registered to vote. We look forward to working closely with our Supervisor of Elections as we carefully train and prepare our volunteers to work within the framework of the law, as we have always done. We want to encourage every Florida citizen to “Be Ready to Vote” in 2012 by checking if they are registered, and if their registration is up to date, at our voter service website: BeReadyToVote.org. There, voters can download a registration form, update their address, request a mailin ballot, find their polling location and get early voting hours. VV

Care and Counsel for Combat Trauma By MARY BROTHERTON
As hard as it can be to await the return of deployed military personnel, discovering changes due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can be devastating for loved ones. Women Reaching Women, a 501(c)(3) outreach organization formed to assist military mothers and children who seek help coping with the sometimes drastic changes that occur when spouses and parents return to civilian life, is sponsoring Care and Counsel for Combat Trauma in September. CCCT is a course to raise awareness and provide 30 continuing education units for counselors, family members, pastors and other volunteers. The training program, approved by the American Psychological Association and the National Board of Certified Counselors, will be held at Calvary Chapel located at 2852 Fellowship Place in Viera, near Space Coast Stadium, Sept. 20 through 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. There are no special
requirements needed and anyone can benefit from the course. Those suffering from trauma or their family members may participate, according to Donna Long, founder of Women Reaching Women. CCCT will be facilitated by Crystal Turman, licensed clinical social worker. Long said, “Crystal has facilitated this course twice before when Women Reaching Women presented it to the public. The program is free for awareness attendees; the cost for CEUs is $180, which includes the $30 processing fee. “Women Reaching Women is so thankful that Calvary Chapel shares the vision to educate and equip as many in the community as possible in order to help those who suffer from trauma, which is not reserved for the military only; people experience the effects of trauma through car accidents, rape, natural disasters or loss of loved ones, Long said. Twenty-five years later, a musical anniversary bash for Hope Episcopal Church is planned for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 called Rockin’ on Interlachen, so named for the street on which the church is located, just south of N. Wickham Road. “We have a rich history and an even richer present and future,” said Rev. Debbie Vann, pastor of the church. “We wanted to do something for the community to celebrate our growing up together, but also give an opportunity for those who wish to join us in helping those less fortunate.”
History of growing
Bradley, Griffin and other pioneers first met in July of their first year of worship, at what was then Suntree United Methodist Church’s building, now the home of St. Paul’s Anglican Church. The musical chairs of churches continued when the

first property was purchased, on what is now the home of Friendship Unitarian Universalist Church. “Our first building was an old house,” Griffin said. “We all pitched in, cleaned it up, and put a couple of candles on a table for an altar.” The popular service quickly outgrew the space and members met in the Suntree Elementary School cafeteria for worship. The current facility was built in two phases and now includes a community room with wood floors overlooking towering pines and a pristine lake.
“I felt we didn’t need a ministerial association as much as we needed the people who do the work. Pastors are so busy, but they also attend,” Bradley said. S/VAAC pools funds from member churches to pay for emergency needs like utilities, rent and gas cards to keep families in their homes and their breadwinners in the workplace. Hope and other member churches collect food, which is distributed at the Advent Lutheran Church food pantry at 6 p.m. Thursdays by S/VAAC volunteers.
Shortly after the church’s founding, Bradley saw the need to reach out to the community to fill basic needs. He formed the Suntree/Viera Area Association of Churches, which brings together the outreach volunteers of 12 churches along the Wickham Road, Murrell Road and U.S. 1 corridor, from Faith Fellowship to the south, to Faith “Viera” Lutheran to the north.
The free music fest will showcase local praise bands, including Hope Praise Band, Advent Lutheran’s Disciple 13, The DOCK Kids African Drum Circle and Gospel Band, Holy Trinity Academy’s Honors Music Society and Melbourne Church of Christ’s Chorus. Donations will be accepted for S/VAAC emergency giving and food donations collected for the Advent Lutheran food pantry. For more information, call 321-259-5810. VV

Impressive season for VSLL All-Stars By Carl Kotala
The list of accomplishments the Viera Suntree Little League has accomplished this All-Star season is impressive to say the least. Five district championships. Three sectional championships. Three teams reaching the state tournament, and one of them is still going. The VSLL Juniors won their sectional tournament to advance to the state championship tournament, hosted by the Braden River Little League in Bradenton. The Juniors defeated Boca Raton 10 and SW Port St. Lucie 6-3 to win their section title. Sebastian Samuels had three hits and four RBIs in the first game, while Hayden Kingston also had three hits and Vincent Benvenuto and Jimmy Cawley each had two. Chris McLaughlin had an RBI and stole two bases. Bryson Wallace had two hits and two RBIs. Wallace, Kingston, Jackson Prater, Samuels and Christian Smallwood all combined to pitch a one-hit shutout. In the second game, Alex Brait hit a three-run double, followed by home runs from Prater and Samuels. Prater struck out six and allowed one earned run, and Samuels came on to get the save, using only 10 pitches to get the final three outs.
MAJORS BASEBALL It was a tough day for the host VSLL team, which defeated Martin County North 9-8 in the first game, but couldn’t hold a 4-0 lead and lost 8-4 to West Boynton. Colton Farrington’s RBI opposite field single on a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning cored pinchrunner Alex Roundy to give VSLL a thrilling victory in the first game. Mason Behrens hit a three-run home run and Jack Szachacz had a big RBI triple. Connor Scheer and J.T. Santos both had strong pitching outings as VSLL advanced to the title game. Behrens also hit a three-run homer in the second game. 9-10 BASEBALL The district champions lost 3-2 in the championship game

MAJORS SOFTBALL The VSLL team that won both district and sectional titles, went 1-2 in pool play and did not advance to the championship round. Power said pitcher Stephanie Vetrano was “our flagship pitcher and just a wonderful girl.”
10-11 BASEBALL It was also a 1-2 tournament for the VSLL 10-11 baseball team … but oh, what a one it was. Summer’s a fine time to emphasize lacrosse fundamentals By Jeff Navin
Summer vacation didn’t slow down the girls who play for the Viera Vipers as part of the Viera Suntree Lacrosse club. They just played a different version of the same sport. Chumash, a version of lacrosse which usually is three-on-three competition with a goal in the center of a smaller field, became a fun way to enjoy the game. “In the summer, so many of the girls were on vacation,’’ Viera Vipers coach Donna Wallace said. “Three on three Chumash is good for the girls to show up when they are available. We don’t have to worry about fielding enough people for a larger field.’’ The smaller game also is an excellent way to work on fundamentals in a controlled environment. Wallace’s players range from third grade to eighth grade.

good test. Vero Beach High defeated Bishop Moore of Orlando 22-6 to win the girls state lacrosse championship this spring. Wallace’s coaching approach is to emphasize the fundamentals, especially at this level. “Throwing and catching is the most important fundamental for the girls,’’ Wallace said. “You can always throw and catch faster than you can run. Ground balls can also win or lose a game. Dealing with possession and turning around and getting back to where you need to be on defense will decide who will be the winners of a game.’’ Since Wallace guides girls who range in age and ability, she has to teach her players the science of checking. “Lacrosse is not a contact sport for the younger girls,’’ Wallace said. “There’s no checking. players don’t wear pads - just goggles and mouthpieces. Then, as they get older, there’s modified checking below the shoulders. Eventually, they’ll move into full checking.’’ Too much too soon could prompt potential players to give up the sport for another activity. “In the beginning, their stick skills aren’t that good. We don’t want anybody wielding the stick around the head. We want to keep the stick farther away from the body. As their stick skills become better, they aren’t afraid of checking.’’ Future clinics are scheduled for Aug. 5, Sept. 9 and Oct. 14. Viera roller derby novice gets up to speed By George White
Getting up to speed, and gladly taking a few hits and falls, are just part of the fun these days for Viera resident Suzy Molnar, a new member of The Molly Roger Rollergirls (MRRG), a fullcontact, women’s flat-track roller derby league. Game play consists of a series of short matchups or “jams” in which both teams designate a scoring player, the “jammer”, who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer—in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously. Molnar, now playing under the nickname “Sooz Momofuku,” aspires to be a blocker. She made her first “pace line” during practice in late June, nearly keeping up with

years but this requires a totally different balance. I’ve always pretended to be a non-competitive person. Now I’m looking forward to getting banged up in there and getting better and stronger. This is the first competitive thing that I have felt natural doing,’’ she said. MRRG was officially formed in 2007 when two local teams combined under the moniker the “Molly Roger Rollergirls.” Now, they are divided into two home teams, the Yeti’s Betties and the Molly’s Swallows, and the best from those teams make up the competitive travel team, MRRG. Professional roller derby once was popular and in 1940 more than five million spectators watched in about 50 U.S. cities. In the ensuing decades, however, it predominantly became a form of sports entertainment where the theatrical elements overshadowed the
athleticism. Although some sports entertainment qualities, such as player pseudonyms and colorful uniforms, were retained, scripted bouts with predetermined winners were abandoned. “This is the real thing,’’ said coach Matt “Coach Smash” Crosby. “It’s full contact and an extremely rough sport. Generally, everybody is bruised. They come out here for the competition and the camaraderie.” This is the third season with Yeti’s Betties for Julie “Black N Deck-Her” Black of Melbourne, who admits often having to overcome soreness and bruises as part of the sport. “I’m a freight coordinator, which is basically a desk job. This is part of my life. It keeps me in shape and happy,” she said. For more information, visit mrrg.net. VV

For the members of the Sunrise Springboard Diving club, practicing at the Satellite Beach High School pool twice weekly is not a chore. The young men and women who hone their skills in various dives say they find true joy in what they are doing. Six members of the club will compete in the A.A.U. (Amateur Athletic Union) diving competitions in Huntersville, N.C. at the end of July. Each age group must complete a certain amount of dives and score a preset number of points prior to being chosen for the competition. For the 12 and 13 year olds, seven dives must be completed. Younger divers, those 11 and under, must complete five dives. Scores for the one-meter board
must be 205 to qualify for the competition and for the threemeter board, a score of 210 or higher is required. There are five basic dives with variations on each. These are the front dive, the back, the reverse (or gainer), the inward and the twister. Each dive has its own degree of difficulty. Sunrise Springboard Diving Club’s owner and coach, Bill Talbot, admits he can be a bit of a taskmaster when it comes to the members, but he displays a soft side, also. It is obvious from talking with him, he truly cares about the children he coaches. The six qualified divers who will participate in this year’s national competition are Sarah “Ninja” Rousseau, Ali Giuliani, Lillian Henderson, Cameron Johnson, Courtney Clark and Hana Hamilton.
They practice two to three times a week prior to competition at the school (for the one-meter board) or at the high school in Sebastian (for the three-meter board). Sarah Rousseau, 12, has been diving since she was 7. Her love of the water and swimming began when she was only 5 years old. Her favorite dives are the front double on the one-meter board and the inward one-and-one-half pike on the three-meter board. With high aspirations, she said what she liked best about diving is, “Competing, making friends, and a chance to go to the Olympics one day.” For more information about the Sunrise Springboard Diving Club or the A.A.U., please call Bill Talbot at 321-610-3424 or aaudiving.com. AAU tournament draws 109 teams to Brevard County By Carl Kotala
Fifth-grade basketball players and their families from all around the country descended on Brevard County during the week of July 16-21 for the annual AAU Boys Basketball National Tournament. The event not only helped crown an AAU national champion, but it also had a significant impact on the local economy. Rusty Buchanan, executive director of Space Coast Sports, which has put on the event for the past 20 years, estimated the 109 teams took up 6,000 room nights and generated an economic impact of $3 million. Teams from as far away as California made the trip to Brevard County to play in the tournament. In fact, the field was so big, it had to be divided into two divisions based on skill level. There were also two separate opening ceremonies. Nine gyms from around the county were used to host the tournament, including
Viera High, where the championship game was played. The Indy Hoosiers defeated the South Carolina Hornets 54-50 to win the 11U title. P.K. Martin, one of two AAU commissioners on hand for the tournament, said the fifth-grade event is very important because this is where the children really begin to separate themselves physically, and he praised the way the tournament here is run. “It’s so critical, for fourth and fifth grade, that we make it a pageantry for them and that’s what Space Coast Sports does a fantastic job of,” Martin said. “I would have to say that they’re probably, behind Disney, our No. 1 pageantry in terms of the opening ceremony, in terms of the presentation of the awards. I love coming down here.” Buchanan is proud that he has been able to continually win the bid to keep hosting the event. It will be here again in 2013 and, hopefully, long after that as well. VV

John Houlihan works with a student, Jeremy Gluck, at the piano during a lesson at the Creative Music, Art and Learning Center in Suntree on July 17, 2012.
The Creative Music, Art and Learning Center on Bedford Drive in Suntree is located in an inconspicuous building that might easily be missed. Loretta Fox has owned and operated the center since 2000. She has studied music for most of her life. She has a degree in education. Aaron Hendrickson and John Houlihan were students at the school when they were younger and wanted to continue their musical experience by offering lessons to young musicians. Both are 17 years old and students at Viera High School. They each have studied music since they were quite young and enjoy helping other young
people learn to play piano and violin. Hendrickson is accomplished on the violin as well as the piano. Houlihan plays and teaches piano at the school. Both continue to study music, as well as teach it. When asked why they wanted to teach at the school, both indicated a passion for music. Hendrickson said, “I want to share my experience and knowledge of music with others.” Houlihan said, “I wanted a summer job that was rewarding and teaching piano was a natural choice.” Currently, Hendrickson has two students, ages 9 and 12. Houlihan has one student, 14-year-old Jeremy
Gluck who has been taking lessons for three years. Houlihan plays clarinet and trumpet and enjoys tennis as well and is taking advanced placement (AP) classes. Youth ECO Summit brings ideas to better environment By Jeff Navin
If all goes well, it won’t just be another day at the zoo. Meg Lieth, the zoo teen coordinator at the Brevard Zoo, and her young friends hope the inaugural Youth ECO Summit will prompt young people throughout Brevard County to make the necessary changes to counteract climate change in order to preserve and improve the environment. It won’t be an easy task. The Youth ECO Summit will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Brevard Zoo. Boys and girls ranging in age from 11 to 18 will attend workshops, listen to speakers and develop plans to help restore zest to Brevard County’s environment. “Last November, we went to the Youth Ocean Conservation Summit in Sarasota at Mote Marine Laboratory,’’ said Sarah Tanke, who will be a sophomore at West Shore Junior/Senior High this month. “That inspired us to start a beach cleanup. And then, we decided to take it a step forward to have this summit. There was a lot of brainstorming with a lot of kids. The summit gave us a little focus on the environment and different problems in other areas of the state.’’
VIERA VOICE Jeff Navin
West Shore Junior/Senior High sophomore, Sarah Tanke, far left; Robbie Breininger, also a sophomore at West Shore Junior/Senior High; Amanda Tito, a senior at Edgewood Junior/Senior High and Meg Lieth, the zoo teen coordinator, have worked hard to organize the inaugural Youth ECO Summit.
“We’d like to see them make a pledge to save part of the environment.” Amanda Tito, who will be a senior at Edgewood Junior/ Senior High on Merritt Island, is worried about the plight of the ocean. “I like being on the water and I want to help and protect the animals,’’ the 17-year-old Tito said. “Through the beach cleanups, we’ve seen what a problem smoking can be on the beach. People throw their butts all over the place. This is harmful for the seagulls, birds and animals when it’s
washed into the ocean.’’ Tanke, 15, has focused her efforts on the complex world of the Intracoastal Waterway, which has fascinated marine biologists around the world as freshwater and saltwater species merge. “I’m into the ocean, too, but I want to help restore the Indian River Lagoon oyster mats,’’ Tanke said. “If we can get that going and deploy oyster mats there and into the Mosquito Lagoon, I feel that we could make a
difference.’’ Robbie Breininger, who will be a 10th grader at West Shore next month, has fond memories and continues to enjoy trekking through scrub lands with his father, David, a biologist, and his brothers. “I’m passionate about scrub jays and scrub lands,’’ Breininger said. “I’ve been able to work with my dad and he’s taught me how we can help. He does population counts, puts differentcolored bands on them to
help identify them and how old they are. I’ve learned how they need to be protected and I want to help.’’ Three teens can’t save the world, but the Youth ECO Summit could help to change the attitudes of some young people. “We’d like to see them make a plan for what they can do,’’ said Lieth, a native of North Carolina who has worked at the Brevard Zoo for the past six years. “They could help on a project or start their own. We’d like to see them make a pledge to save part of the environment. It could be something as simple as recycling or turning out the lights. Every little bit helps.’’ Tanke, Tito and Breininger are all members of the Zoo Teens. The volunteers, ranging in age from 13 to 16, help the staff at the Brevard Zoo with animal handling and public education, kayaking and animal husbandry. The program also fulfills the community service requirement for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. “We just want kids who have a love for animals and the environment,’’ Lieth said. “No experience is necessary. We just want the kids to be excited to be here.’’ For information on the Youth ECO Summit, call Lieth at 321-254-9453, ext. 272.VV CHRISTIAN OWNED COMPANY

Manatee Elementary School administrative manager Ruth McCreeary credits a strong parent-teacher partnership in helping Viera/Suntree area schools to maintain an FCAT grade of A.

School starts on the earliest day in Brevard County history, Wednesday, Aug. 8, the date set by soaring scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, or FCAT. “We are a high performing school district and so we get to start earlier in August,â€? said Brevard schools official Monique Henzmann. Each of the past three years, schools have started two weeks ahead of any schools in the state that are not high performing. Leap year made the date the earliest on local record. Some parents had hoped for a later start, with many voicing concerns to the Brevard County School Board at meetings in recent months. But in the end, the board accepted the Florida Department of Education’s offer to apply as a high-scoring district and will start the school year two weeks earlier. The downsides voiced by parents: • National, and even some in-state, contests and camps are still under way and local students must either miss them or miss the start of school. • School starts in the height of the summer heat, stretching the hot streak before the typical mid-October break in temperatures. • Families may need to choose between skipping late-summer family reunions and vacations or keeping students out of school. • The early start date leads to child-custody friction between divorced parents whose former spouses live in northern states, which typically start school after Labor Day, which this year puts the school start date at Sept. 4, one month later than Brevard schools’ beginning date. For many families, the benefits outweigh the downsides, especially as students reach junior high and high school levels. “Obviously, the main advantage that we have earned, and the point of this, is that students and teachers have the extra two weeks to prepare for the FCAT, which this year will be in March, a month earlier than the previous year,â€? said Ruth McCreeary, administration manager for Manatee Elementary School in Viera. Area elementary schools Suntree, Quest and Ralph Williams also maintained their A grades. Other benefits: • Students will finish the semester before winter break, and not risk forgetting important lessons or having to study during vacation for tougher tests in junior high and high school. • School will end earlier in spring. To pick up a copy of a student’s individual FCAT results, contact the student’s school’s front office or call 321-633-1000 to be connected, or for any other school district information. Changes in media positions at Brevard schools By Linda Wiggins
If parents need to speak to someone about schools or if information is to go out to the public or the media, a new voice will do the talking. Brevard County Public Schools hired a new communications director July 23. Michelle Irwin comes to Brevard schools from L’Anse Creuse Public Schools in Michigan where she served as the senior director for community relations and programs since 2004. Brevard’s previous communications director, Christine A. Davis, Ed.S., now serves as coordinator of Choice, Charter and Strategic Planning. “The District has an array of options for our students to explore their passions and discover new skills—magnet schools, choice schools, academies, choice programs, career and technical programs, and much more,” Davis said. “Unfortunately, school choice is often an unknown concept to many of our families. As parents, we often have more information about purchasing a new cell phone than we do about how to choose a school for our children. I want to change that.” The goal of the new role is to help parents understand what educational resources are currently available for their children. “As a mom and a resident of Brevard, I understand

I think nursing helped me be a better doctor, but I would say if you‘re going to be in that much debt, go straight for it. I kept my nursing degree for a long time because I worked hard to get that degree. Nurses work extremely hard, don‘t get the respect that they deserve and they take a holistic look at a human being, not just their medical issue. Doctors need to listen to nurses,’’ she said. A single parent, King took an Army scholarship at Texas Tech Medical School and subsequently served six years in the military. King was in North Carolina when she heard about the opening in Viera. “We fell in love with this area. We love the beach. People were kind. Low crime. Everyone exercising. I just try to avoid I-95. I don’t want to live in a big city, so it had all the appeal to me,’’ she said. King enjoys her current

practice as a member of Health First Physicians. “It’s been growing very rapidly. I treat things like high blood pressure, kidney problems and routine sickness like colds. Basically, anything that an adult can experience, I can take care of,’’ she said. Internal medicine physicians “handle more complicated issues as well.
We’re sort of a central hub for all of the specialists they have to see.’’ King admits running behind on patients because she takes time to listen to each one of them. “Doctors are in a conflict, caught between spending time with people and seeing a certain number of people. You have to have a good balance,’’ she said. VV

New service helps voters get heard By George White
American politics may forever become more interactive as the result of Thepeoplesvote, the brainchild of Chuck Kirkpatrick, of Rockledge. Active in Georgia politics and the Georgia Association of Professional Employers Organization, Kirkpatrick once was asked to run for office but passed on the offer. Because being elected is about relying on the help of a single party, he knew that eventually that party would e ask him to vote accordingly and perhaps against his better judgment. “I’ve always loved politics but declined. I‘ve always been supportive of the candidate and I‘ve never voted along party lines,’’ he said. A reoccurring dream has now become a website, to be launched Aug. 10, on which members voice their opinions on “non-binding, non-partisan advisory propositions.” “It’s a way for citizens to share their opinions before it becomes law because it’s extremely hard to alter a bill once it’s in the process. To me it’s so simple. It’s a new way of doing it but it‘s exactly like our nation‘s founders intended it to be,’’ he said.
The service would be free to basic members, $4 annually for an ad-free version and $59 per year for premium members which also includes a chat room and the ability to request statistical reports, according to Kirkpatrick. ”As important as the service will be to the voters, the data collected and compiled will mean even more to the politicians, especially compared to the information gleaned from often partisan current polling practices,” he said. “It’s a tool for them to understand the makeup of the district and how they feel about the issues.” Kirkpatrick quotes Thomas Jefferson about effective government being “well informed citizens meeting as neighbors so that policies could be decided by the common reason of the citizens themselves.’’ With positive feedback so far, he believes that Thepeoplesvote.com soon will become an important part of the American political landscape. “It’s just an amazing feeling for me to see the excitement about this. It‘s just like the nation‘s founders intended. All we’re doing is bringing the technology in to make it more interactive,’’ he said. VV

Golf Classic planned to benefit Academy of Business & Finance
Dillion Wins Dillon Wins
Several years from now, Viera High graduates could become regulars in the annual Colbert Classic at Duran Golf Club. That would only be appropriate since the golf event helps the Academy of Business & Finance and the Academy for Digital Arts & Media at the school. Money raised from the Colbert Classic helps to provide supplemental materials, fund field trips and pay for other products to sustain the academies. The alumni from these programs eventually could become the business leaders of Brevard County. The sixth annual Colbert Classic is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17 at Duran Golf Club. The cost to compete is $80 for individual golfers and $300 for a foursome. The price will increase to $100 for
individual golfers and $350 for a foursome one week before the event. Breakfast and lunch will be included, as well as various prizes including a $200 gift card and four free rounds of golf at Duran Golf Club for the winner. It will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Anyone lucky enough to record a hole-in-one will win a lucrative prize. There also are sponsorship opportunities and all contributions are tax deductible. Sandra Spence, a business teacher at Viera High, also teaches classes in the Academy of Business & Finance that focus on accounting, personal finance and microsoft word certification. “They learn so many skills,’’ Spence said. “I only wish every kid could do this program. But, we only have so many spots. There’s a
lot of team building, career shadowing and tours at accounting firms, banks, businesses and even at Viera Hospital. Between their junior and senior years, we have internships for them.’’ One popular program is learning how to manage a fictitious stock portfolio that opens with an equally fictitious $100,000. It doesn’t take long before the lingo of trading on margin, short selling and alternating between puts and calls becomes second nature. A typical freshman class will begin with 50 students for each academy. “We have kids in band and every sport is represented in the academies,’’ Spence said. “I’m certified in Microsoft, and that’s a great skill for the kids to have.’’ For information, call 321-751-8943. “I was just really excited,” Ashley said. “I started crying.” Climbing has always come naturally to Norton. When she was 4, she and her sister, Brittany, were playing outside at a friend’s house in the family’s Westland, Mich. condominium association. Jim came out to bring the girls in for lunch, but he didn’t see Ashley. When he asked where she was, her friends pointed up at a pine tree stretching between 40 to 50 feet into the sky. There was Ashley, at the top. “I wasn’t tall enough to reach the first branch, so my friends lifted me up to the first branch and I started going at it,” Ashley said. She climbed down the tree, too. Four years later, her father introduced her to rock climbing. Now, she has the opportunity of a lifetime, and the family is trying to raise $2,000 to help make that dream possible. VHS Senior considering West Point future By George White
Viera High School Senior Thomas Seiler has been a member of his school’s Army ROTC unit for two years, rising to the rank of battalion commander. Such an experience is good for any student’s resume when the student is planning to attend an upper level college anywhere in the country, but Seiler has his sites set in a related direction to an institution considered at the top of service academies. Seiler, who is looking seriously at a career in the military, was selected for the Summer Leaders Seminar June 9 through 16 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point that only admits students who are strong candidates to attend West Point after graduation. There were 500 candidates in Seiler’s group, with a similar number already having taken the seminar previously. Only the best of the best will actually be chosen to become West Pointers; Seiler is hopeful he has a good shot.
“It was awesome. We had to wake up early and do the physical fitness part and then it was three days of training in engineering, leadership and ethics. I definitely got a good taste of what it’s going to be like there,’’ Seiler said. He said that the experience was a surprise in that some of his misconceptions were dispelled by the visit. “Before, I thought it was going to be super strict with everybody yelling at you, but it really wasn’t that way. It’s just a college that is strict, but they just expect you to do the work and don’t yell much,’’ he said. Seiler, like the other candidates for West Point, exhibits the qualities of a well-rounded student including being a member of the lacrosse and rifle teams and being named trumpet section leader in the Viera High School Marching Band. He would like his military career to be centered on engineering and ordnance, he said. VV

Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus)
Charlie Corbeil
Florida Master Naturalist pbase.com/charlie_corbeil
On this early June morning, I am exploring a pond at the Viera Wetlands. The birds are noisy with their morning chatter. Soon, the strident calls of a black-necked stilt (a bird with stilt-like legs) draw me to the water’s edge. I crouch among the tall reeds and wait. Before long, two adult stilts approach. A lively newborn closely follows. Staying at an appropriate
distance, I expectantly adjust my long lens. Promptly, the skittish female reacts. Relentless shrieks pierce the air. She darts into the water in a highstepping frenzy. When the youngling finally joins her, the agitation fades; she lowers herself upon it and broods in the shallow water. Her purpose is to shield the offspring from predation. To further shelter the chick, she encapsulates it under her wing. Then, with the chick still confined against her body, she painstakingly stands on her long legs. At this point, the chick is partially concealed, but its long dangling legs are fully exposed (see photo). Without delay, the protective mother heads towards nearby vegetation. She is yet burdened with the

young one protruding from her wing. Her shrieking persists. Moreover, the alarmed mate circles and squawks overhead. No doubt I must leave. When I return a week later, I remain undetected in my cover. The adults forage nearby. Their precocial chick (able to undertake a high level of independent activity from birth) actively swims and walks in the surrounds — routines it has been able to perform within two hours after hatching. Such behavioral observation, though occasionally intrusive, will hopefully encourage the safeguarding of the blacknecked stilt and its habitat. VV

Which has the bigger number: Breeds of dogs in the world or brands of beer in the world? The two are not even close. There are more than150 breeds registered with the American Kennel Club, and well more than 500 with various other kennel clubs. But if you want a truly big number, there are more than 20,000 brands of beer in the world. World of Beer in The Avenue Viera doesn’t have quite that many, but they do have a rather large collection. Ales for Tails—joining beer and dogs came about as a fundraiser for Brevard Aiding Shelter Animals Project, Inc. (ASAP) through the efforts of Virginia Hamilton, education director for ASAP, Sherri Binggeli, president, and World of Beer owners, Maribeth and Chuck Liska. The fundraiser was to raise monies to convert an unused locker room at the South Animal Care Center into a new and needed Isolation Room at the 5100 W. Eau Gallie Blvd. location. There is a North Animal Care Center at 2605 Flake Road, Titusville. Also, the fundraiser will help in the two spay/neuter programs that are ongoing. The Brevard County Gator Club knows how to throw a party. This year’s annual Kickoff Party & Golf Challenge will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18 at Duran Golf Club. There will be a free children’s golf clinic at 3 p.m. The nine-hole par three golf challenge begins at 4 p.m., followed by the kickoff party at the clubhouse at 5:30 p.m. Brad Bowers, kickoff party chairman said, “This is one of the club’s biggest events and, by far, the most fun. This is the first time we have had multiple former Gator players play golf and attend this event. We hope to make it our largest fundraising event of the year.” The family-friendly event is open to the public and all ages may attend. Along with the free golf clinic, a supervised, outdoor Kids Fun Zone, during the party will occupy young attendees. Ally, the club’s six-foot long alligator mascot and Squirt, a baby alligator, will
be in available for photo opportunities and petting the baby gator. The kickoff party begins at 5:30 p.m. with pep rally music and highlights from the Gators’ previous seasons on the television screens. A revolving power point presentation will preview the upcoming season and honor the past gator players who attend the event. A “TailGator” buffet begins at 6:30 p.m. Vendors will be on hand, selling unique items and bringing a little bit of “The Swamp” to Brevard as well as a silent auction, giveaways and prizes for the best dressed male and female Gators. Former gator players Tony Rowell, Robin Fisher, Cal Dixon, Fred McCallister and Hugh Barton will attend the event and other players may attend. The players will also be playing in the golf challenge and sign autographs during the event. “Kelly Red” Collazo from ESPN radio’s Playn the Field and Mike Lowe from Lite
Rock’s 93.9 Mike and Mindy show will co-host the event. Tickets for the kickoff party are $20 for members, $25 for non-members and $15 for children under 12. The golf challenge begins at 4 p.m. the nine-hole, parthree event will feature a closest to the pin and longest putt contest. The format is a two-man scramble. There will be prizes for the winning and losing teams and the winners of the two contests. The golf event will sell out quickly, as it is limited to 36 golfers. Tickets for the golf event are $20. People and businesses may participate in this event by making a donation, providing prizes or choosing a level of sponsorship. Program sponsors begin at $25. Golf-hole sponsorships are $50.
