Candidates debate issues at Suntree forum By MIKE GAFFEY
Brevard County Commission District 4 hopefuls Bill Klein and Rick Lacey tied for the most votes in a straw poll conducted after a candidates’ forum June 26 at Suntree Country Club. The two led a field of seven candidates ― all Republicans ― after a sometimes spirited debate in front of an audience of about 135 people. The countywide primary is Tuesday, Aug. 26. Among candidates running for judgeships, straw poll winners were Samuel Bookhardt for Circuit Judge Group 13; Robin Lemonidis for Circuit Judge Group 14; Susan Stacy for Circuit Judge Group 19; John Moser for Circuit Judge Group 23; Michelle Vitt Baker for County Judge Group 3; and Ben Garagozlo for County Judge Group 8. County Commission candidates sparred over a variety of topics provided in question form by attendees. Suntree/Viera-related issues ranged from proposed constitutional Amendment 1, traffic patterns in Viera and the feasibility of installing a traffic light at Wickham Road and Forest Lake Avenue. Candidate David Armstrong said he opposed Amendment 1, which would reserve 33 percent of net revenues from the existing excise tax on documents to the Land Acquisition Trust Fund. Monies would go toward acquiring, restoring and improving conservation lands and water quality in lakes, streams and rivers, including the Indian River Lagoon, which recently has made national headlines for high levels of pollution. Bill Klein, left, and Rick Lacey were among a field of candidates for Brevard County District 4 Commissioner to address concerns of Suntree residents at a June 26 candidates forum. Armstrong was skeptical that funds would be spent in Brevard County, saying bigger projects in South Florida would get most of the money. “As a resident of Brevard for 57 years, I’ve heard a lot of ‘Trust me, the money’s going to Tallahassee and it’s going to come back to you,’ ” he said. “I don’t believe it will be.” Candidate and Melbourne Vice Mayor Greg Jones supported the amendment. “Brevard County can’t raise enough money to do it themselves through grants, through taxation, through any other mechanism,” he said. “It’s going to Presort Std U.S. Postage PAID Orlando, FL Permit No. 1979

take not only local, but state and federal money.” Klein echoed Jones’ sentiments. “We can’t possibly clean up on our own. There are six or seven counties involved in this. This is a regional matter. It’s not just a Brevard problem. So any funding source that we can obtain, we need to obtain so we can take care of the lagoon problem.” Lacey not only supported the new traffic light on Wickham Road and

More than a ton of barbecue meats and all the fixings from the rained out July 5 event went to service personnel across the greater Viera area.
Event rainout turned clouds into smiles for service personnel BY LINDA WIGGINS
Perhaps no one will remember the early July post-tropical storm days of monsoon rains and thunderstorms like Joane Dowd. She is the event architect for The Viera Company who organized the 20th anniversary Great American Celebration July 5 at Space Coast Stadium, with a concert by chart-topping country and popular musical artist Phil Vassar to follow at the adjacent Cavalry Chapel Melbourne Viera campus. With an anticipated attendance of the combined events estimated at 20,000 people, and a pre-sold out crowd of VIPs and more than a ton of delicious barbecued meats and fixings ready to feed them, she was forced to pull the plug on the event. She and Lauri Duda of The Viera Company changed
instructions to the more than 200 volunteers on hand. Rather than sending them to their posts to guide in traffic, the brave remnants pushed through howling rains to pick up the 900 pounds of barbecue beef brisket, 900 pounds of pulled pork, and 700 hot dogs and endless stream of vats of side dishes. Cavalry administrator Mina Massihnia then oversaw the distribution of the food to fire stations and sheriff’s units across the greater Viera area. “They had such grateful hearts that someone was thinking of them,” Massihnia said. Dowd called it “getting rained on with lemons and turning it into a giant pitcher of lemonade.” “They put their life on the line daily for us,” Dowd said. “There was no better use it could go to than making their day.” VV

Six Duda generations mark 25th, 20th and 10th milestones of Viera By Linda Wiggins
Members of the Duda family that founded Viera brought a gift to celebrate the community’s 25th birthday: a check for $2,500 to the Brevard Zoo to pay for summer camp next year for children who could not otherwise attend. The July 15 donation to mark the Aug. 4 milestone was small in comparison to past gifts ― the Duda family donated the land for the zoo and continues to provide substantial support ― but it was packed with symbolism. The money was raised during the annual reunion of all Duda family members in June via a raffle of a variety of items. Part of what is called the Philanthropy Project, the goal was to raise $2,500 to mark 25 years, and send 10 children to camp to mark the 10th anniversary of the Duda Family Council. The reunion was held at the zoo and the project picked to mark the zoo’s 20th anniversary. “An underlining goal of these projects is to encourage the participation of the family’s youth, and expose them to philanthropy and the Duda family’s shared
value of giving to others as a means of making an eternal difference, providing an opportunity for the family to practice its Christian values and grow together,” said Stacy Mello, the Duda Family Council chairman and senior director of planning for DUDA. “During the past 88 years, the generational evolution of the Duda family has seen the ownership of DUDA pass from the patriarch and
founder, Andrew Duda, to a partnership between his three sons: John, Andrew and Ferdinand, then to a collaboration of cousins in the third generation and now the fourth and fifth generations,” Mello said. As part of this ownership evolution, the Duda family established a Family Council in 2004 to address some of the governance issues that family businesses in their third and subsequent
generations must begin to deal with. The Council’s mission is: One family, growing together, making an eternal difference. The Family Council is made up of elected family representatives and responsible for developing processes and structure for the family and owners. It was developed under the
guidance of a consulting firm used by successful European family dynasties dating back hundreds of years, according to Viera Company CEO Tracy Duda Chapman. One of the Council’s goals is to recruit and groom new Dudas ― the sixth generation starting in 2008 ― to enter the business and eventually take on management roles. VV

Slow & Low Bar-B-Que breaks ground on Viera location Popular barbecue restaurant’s second Brevard location is scheduled to open in December
BY MIKE GAFFEY
Slow & Low Bar-B-Que Bar & Grill is bringing its popular slow-cooked, hickorysmoked fare — and 70 new jobs — to Viera. The casual dining restaurant and caterer officially broke ground July 9 on its second Brevard County location at 5490 Stadium Parkway, next to Space Coast Credit Union. Slow & Low’s original restaurant is in Cocoa Beach at 306 N. Orlando Ave., the site of the former Alma’s Italian restaurant. “We’re really excited to be coming out to Viera,” said Nicole Smith, who coowns Slow & Low with her husband, Joel. “It’s a growing community and there’s lots of families out there.” Scheduled to open in December, Slow & Low’s nearly 5,000-square-foot Viera location will feature the same menu items that
made the Cocoa Beach eatery such a hit: hickory-smoked pork, chicken, beef, turkey, St. Louis-style ribs, babyback ribs and smoked prime rib. The restaurant also serves hand-carved steaks, specialty sandwiches, seafood, sides, appetizers and desserts. Customers can eat in or take out, buy beer and wine and enjoy an outdoor bar, live entertainment and televisions for watching sports. Operating hours will be 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to midnight Sunday. There will be a few differences: The new location is smaller, will provide golf cart parking and probably will offer an expanded wine list. “Cocoa Beach is more of a beer-drinking town,” Smith noted. “But otherwise, everything else will be the same.”

Barbecue fans in Viera rejoice: Slow & Low Bar-B-Que Bar & Grill is opening a new location in the area. Nicole, daughter Haley, and Joel Smith broke ground July 9. About 70 new employees initially will be hired for the Viera location, Smith said. The Cocoa Beach restaurant employs a staff of 45. The Smiths, who both managed restaurants before opening Slow & Low, decided on a location farther away from The Avenue Viera and closer to residential communities to give familyfriendly Slow & Low the

opened, but the economic downturn stalled those plans, Smith said. “We feel like now the timing is perfect for us and the economy is starting to get better,” she said. Word of the new restaurant has excited Viera-area Slow & Low fans, Smith said. “We’ve had lots of emails and phone calls inquiring about it, especially after last month,” she said. “We had a lot of emails from people saying, ‘We heard . . . is the rumor true?’ “ Smith hopes the December opening runs smoother than the Cocoa Beach location’s start-up in 2004, when Brevard was being lashed by hurricanes Charley, Ivan, Frances and Jeanne. “We opened Labor Day weekend, and for the first six weeks we were closed more than we were open,” she said. “We lost all our food because we lost all electrical power in the back of the restaurant. Going through it was horrible. But now we kind of giggle about it and say, ‘If we made it through that, we can make it through anything.’ “ For more information, call 321-783-6199 or go to slowandlowbarbeque.com VV

Love Bug’s brings delectable pastries to Viera by katie parsons
Love Bug’s Donuts & Bakery offers daily-made donuts, cupcakes and unique pastries. Love Bug’s also carries freshly made breakfast sandwiches and lunch selections that include options made with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses. The Viera location at 5445 Murrell Road, just north of the intersection at Viera Boulevard, opened its doors June 2 and will have an official grand opening Aug. 21. Its low profile thus far has not kept the locals away, though. Manager Lorainne Lancaster says that they already have regulars, including one man who comes in every day after working a night shift and even on his days off. “Our maple bacon bar is by far the most popular,

World War II veteran has always led active life By Carl Kotala
Virginia Jones has never been one to sit around and let the world pass her by. The 87-year-old, who moved to Viera in April, has worn many hats throughout her life. “If I saw a job advertised, I would say, ‘I can do that,’” she said. “I like to do different things.” Jones has been a real estate agent and office manager. She’s worked for the Supervisor of Elections. Heck, she’s even done some demonstration work for Publix. But there is nothing the West Virginia native is more proud of than her time spent in the military. World War II had broken out during her senior year of high school, and some of the boys in her class were starting to leave to join the service. “Everybody was very patriotic,” Jones said. “Everybody wanted to join the service — including me. We all just wanted to take care of our country. That’s what you were supposed to do.” When the FBI came to school, recruiting seniors to work in Washington, D.C. for

the War Department, Jones jumped at the chance. She was trained to do clerical work, which she did for several months before joining the Navy WAVES. She was sent to DeLand Naval Air Station, a small base used to train fighter pilots. It also housed German POWs. Jones served as the news editor of the base newspaper, called The DeLandings, and stayed in DeLand until the war ended in 1946. After a year at the Jacksonville Air Station, she went back to West Virginia and attended business school for two years before she decided to join the Air Force at age 25. In addition to becoming an officer, she spent two years in Japan, where she served as a protocol officer for Maj. Gen. Roger Ramey. She served as a WAF commander in New York and Oklahoma City, before being sent to Harrisburg, W. Va., to be a recruiter. While visiting the campus of American University in Washington, D.C., she met and married Robert Jones, a Purple Heart veteran. She had the first of her two sons,

The military has always played a big role in Virginia Jones’ life. Her father was a World War I and World War II veteran. She is a World War II veteran and her oldest son, David, is a Vietnam veteran. Jones can be spotted around town driving a Nissan Cube. “It’s a perfect car for the older generation … and it’s a perfect car for anyone that has a handicap, or any difficulty getting up and down,” she said. David, and with the rank of captain, resigned her commission in 1959. After leaving the military, she worked as a realtor in El Paso, Texas, and for the federal government before
retiring to Jacksonville. She decided to move to Viera to be closer to family and likes it so much, she plans to spend the rest of her life here. Of course, she still wants to stay busy.
“I don’t know if anyone would let me do anything now, but I still want that … a job was always meaningful to me,” she said. “I’d still like to have some part-time work to do.” VV

Eagle’s Landing traffic signal gets green light By Linda Wiggins

People interested in purchasing certain fixerupper homes have an option called the HomePath Renovation loan. To qualify, the property must be a Fannie Mae REO, or Real Estate Owned property, which is a class of property owned by Fannie Mae after an unsuccessful sale at a foreclosure auction. The listing will indicate whether the property qualifies for the HomePath Renovation Loan. According to Susan Callahan, branch manager at HomeBridge Financial Services, these homes do not typically meet the health and safety requirements put in place by Fannie Mae. They may be missing shingles, have broken tiles, drywall damage or bathrooms and kitchens that do not work. The renovation is not limited to repairs. By Carl Kotala
Viera/Suntree Little League All-Star teams are having quite a summer. At press time, the VSLL
Majors softball team was heading to the state tournament, while the Juniors baseball team was fresh off winning a District 2 championship — one of four district titles won by the league — and was preparing for sectional play. Mackenzie Fearon pitched a perfect game during district play for the Majors softball team, while teammate Alyssa Tougas was also perfect in a 10-0 victory against Sebastian River in the first game of the sectional tournament. Taryn Aebli started things off with a clutch RBI hit and Kelsey Reiter’s drive down the right-field line scored Megan Foster to end the game under the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning. Reiter went 2 for 2 with a double, Madison Dooley went 2 for 2 with a triple and three RBI and Kennedy Hewitt www.edwardjones.com
went 2 for 3 with a double as the VSLL built a 12-0 lead after just three innings of the second game. Following a lightning delay, Sebastian River forfeited, sending the VSLL to Clearwater for the state tournament, which began July 18. The Juniors baseball team was set to begin sectionals play July 19 at Rodes Park in West Melbourne. The team won the district championship with a 4-1 win against Eau Gallie and got strong pitching performances from Connor Sheer and J.T. Santos throughout the tournament. Also winning district titles this summer were the 9/10 baseball (gold team) and the 11-year-old baseball teams. Nathan Rao pitched a perfect game for the 9/10 team during district play, which also saw two dramatic victories take place. The VSLL overcame deficits of 5-0 and 6-5 — not to mention a rain postponement — to beat South Beaches 7-6 on a walkoff two-run double by Robbie Behrens. In the title game, the VSLL saw a 4-0 lead erased by Eau Gallie, only to have Cole Hewatt single and eventually

The 11-year-old team won its first sectional game 19-1 against Boca Raton, but dropped its next game. Brett Anderson hit two

The Space Coast United U17 boys soccer team reached the semifinals of the National Premier League Finals in Greensboro, N.C. last month. It was the first time Space Coast United has reached the NPL Finals. By Carl Kotala
It’s safe to say the members of the Space Coast United Soccer Club’s U17 boys team won’t be forgetting their historic trip to Greensboro, N.C. last month any time soon. Playing in the National Premier Leagues Finals for the first time, Space Coast United advanced to the semifinals before losing to eventual national champion Placer (Calif.) United. “The memories were endless — even the ice baths!” team captain Brandon Berg said in a release provided by the club. Space Coast United opened the five-day tournament by defeating Rio Rapids (N.M.) 1-0 before losing to Santa Monica (Calif.) United 3-2. The team bounced back the next day, defeating Tynecastle (Wash.) 5-0 to reach the semifinals. Leading the No. 3 ranked
team in the nation 1-0 heading into the final 10 minutes, Space Coast United lost a heartbreaker when Placer United rallied for a 2-1 victory. Dylan White, Stephen Pacheaco, Brandon Berg and John Schneider all scored during the tournament for Space Coast United. The defense, led by keeper Jesse Della Porta, Michael Martin, Berg, Scott Alliance, Robert Madden, Shahriyar Sepehri, Max Akers and Nicholas Spielman helped the team post two shutouts. Also playing well offensively throughout the tournament were Michael White, Dominic Carillo, John Schneider, Oscar Sang, Pacheaco, Kade Sweeney, Cisco Molledo, White and Evan Enders. Justin Blazer, the director of instruction at Duran Golf Club, demonstrates AimPoint Express, a method of reading greens that can help golfers accurately predict how a putt will break. By Carl Kotala
It’s become one of the hottest topics on the PGA and LPGA Tours in recent months, it is used by both the No. 1 men’s and women’s players in the world, and Justin Blazer, Duran Golf Club’s director of instruction, can teach it to you in just 30 minutes. By using the AimPoint Express method of putting, you can not only learn how to read greens better, but also predict just how much the ball is going to break. That could give golfers of any kind of level an edge to help them turn their putting game from a weakness to a major strength. And it’s easy to learn. “I think it’s going to
revolutionize the way we read greens and the way we putt,” Blazer said. “Now, it’s predictable.” Founded by Mark Sweeney, AimPoint technology has been used on Golf Channel broadcasts since 2007 and even won the George Wensel Award for Technical Achievement at the 2007 Sports Emmy Awards. World No. 1 men’s player Adam Scott has seen a remarkable improvement in his putting stroke since he started using the AimPoint method. In 2011, Scott ranked No. 143 on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting. Heading into this year’s U.S. Open, he was ranked 18th in that same category. Stacy Lewis, the LPGA
Tour’s top-ranked player, also uses the AimPoint system. According to Aimpointgolf. com, an instructional session will teach you — among other things — how to accurately identify the slope, how the slope’s direction and grade will affect the break and how to determine precisely how much each putt will break. The best part is, you don’t have to be a pro-level player to be able to use the AimPoint system. In fact, AimPoint Express — which debuted in February — originally was designed to make it easier for younger players to understand. Now, it’s really taking off. “The crazy thing was it was originally designed for kids, and the Tour players fell in

Viera Charter School expands, excels By Linda Wiggins
As construction workers raised the roof on the expanded Viera Charter School, so too did parents blow the lid off fundraising goals for the first year of the school’s existence, topping $100,000. Phase two of construction will add another 200 seats to capacity, for a total of 850 students at the start of the 2014-15 year on Aug. 18. Despite the added room, there remains a waiting list of 1,200 students whose families would love to be part of the Panther Pride. “To say that the accomplishment of our parents is phenomenal would be an understatement,” VCS principal Dr. Julie Cady said. “They are already planning for a new year and looking to far exceed that astronomical number. We are beyond pleased with their love for the school and
their commitment to their children’s education.” The magnet school focuses on science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM for short. While as a charter school it is privately owned and governed by its own leadership board, students attend at no charge because their tuition is covered by tax dollars distributed by Brevard Public Schools. The new building adjacent to the existing school is for middle school students, a service much in demand in Viera because there is no other public middle school in the Viera/Suntree community. Elementary students must leave the area for schools to the north and beachside or beyond, before returning to attend Viera High School, which is visible across Stadium Parkway from VCS. Sales tax increase a worthy investment in education, Viera couple says By Linda Wiggins
Laene and Dustin Keith’s children, Gavin and Logan, are products of Brevard Public Schools, and if the public education advocates don’t say so themselves, their children are pretty darn good products of the product. Laene Keith, a pediatric speech therapist for Health First hospitals, is a parent advocate hoping to influence voters to approve a halfcent sales tax initiative Nov. 4 to “Save our Students,” what she says is the new, more accurate name for the Save our Schools initiative that failed in 2012. She is a member of the BPS parent leadership team that spans the county. “It’s not about saving schools, but students. Our schools have done such a stellar job with sparse budgets of recent years. Imagine what they can do for our children, our community, our future, with just a bit more money to more closely meet their needs.” The family lives in the Viera East neighborhood zoned for the A-rated Williams Elementary School, but they vied for and won the lottery for slots at Stevens Elementary School on Merritt Island because of their sons’ penchant for the arts, for which the school is a magnet. As of last year, the Keiths began paying about $150 a month for corridor busing that the school district dropped as promised after the 2012 half-cent sales tax failed, also closing three schools and making other deep cuts. Nature is returned to nature courtesy
S
By Linda Wiggins
tan Sircello’s grandfather first introduced him to the work he loves, before he knew it as work. The gentle soul of Narragansett tribe heritage would scold Sircello as a boy for throwing rocks into a stream. “If you kept that up, you’d fill up the stream. Leave nature to itself,” he’d tell him. “He taught me to grow organic food long before the hippies came along,” Sircello said with his trademark laidback smile. These environmentalist roots grew Sircello into the scientist he is today as manager of the South Central Wastewater Treatment Plant in Viera. He has a bachelor of science degree in Natural Resources Management from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and an associate of arts degree and certification in Horticulture from Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa. To run the plant, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection requires him to maintain a Class A Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license. He and his team are working to double the capacity to treat wastewater in the Viera/Suntree area from 5.5 million gallons per day to more than 10 million gallons to accommodate new residential growth in west Viera. Plant expansion will begin in December and take three years. The expansion is one of three goals the 58 “and a half”-year-old wants to accomplish before he retires at age 62, so he literally is on the clock while he is on the clock. In addition to the plant’s expansion, he also wants to make sure good staff is in place to operate it, and third, he wants to put in place good, clearly documented procedures for everything, including an advanced treatment process of his own design, but more on that later. How does what we wash and flush down drains come back to us crystal clean enough to drink, if anyone had the nerve?
Viera Voice Linda Wiggins
Stan Sircello, manager of the South Central Water Treatment Plant in Viera, drops sludge-eating organisms in water to determine their rate of multiplication, determined by a formula of algebra and calculus, right. Sircello uses nature to return itself to itself. Grandfather would be proud. Number one, number two, soap, anything that goes down the garbage disposal, and everything in between, they count it all delicious. Between them, there is nothing that the bacterial cast of characters won’t eat. Microorganisms are added
Monsters are our friends
F
irst of all, Sircello doesn’t work alone, but with billions of helpers, each with its own name and look worthy of a star turn in a 1950s horror flick if it somehow grew beyond what could be observed under a microscope.

according to a formula of algebra and calculus to make sure they don’t overrun a city, because they divide asexually into two, and each does the same again, again and again until there are plenty on the job. Brown liquid flows through channels to give Mother Nature time to work her magic. The floating masses are not what visitors guess them to be, but rather they are masses of filamental bacteria that like to stack as they divide. Eventually, the organisms are deemed done ― for now. Their liquid surroundings are piped into round clarification vats and slowly circulated so the clear filtered water spills outward and the organisms are gently collected inward. Parting ways, the water continues its clarification process while the well-fed organisms are delivered to compression belts to squeeze out excess water via 350 pounds per square inch of force. Metal helix screws convey the sludge solids to a truck.
An encore career for the littlest environmentalists
T
hese viable creatures are then transported to landfills where they are layered between stacks of garbage to continue their feast, moving on from our liquid waste to break down and reduce the volume of our solid waste. The sewage removed, it is only now that the wastewater encounters its first caustic chemical and nonorganic process, very strong chlorine bleach to kill any remaining beasties. It is a similar process to that applied to water pulled from Lake Washington a few miles south and turned into drinking water. The two finished products are barely discernible under a microscope, the “reclaimed” water nearly as sterile. The difference is that the Viera plant’s water is not deemed potable,
vieravoice.com
of the littlest environmentalists or fit for human consumption, so most of it is piped out for use as irrigation in medians, golf courses, private communities and marked accordingly. The remainder is piped into the adjacent 200-acre Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands to the west to get a final polish before making its way to underground water supplies and ultimately the St. Johns River, a major source for drinking water. “I have the best world of both degrees,” Sircello said. “I use my horticulture degree assessing the nutrient uptake and condition of the plants in the constructed wetlands. I use my environmental management degree to supply the public with safe, reclaimed water. That requires a lot of ‘fun with science.’ ” While this organic treatment process is used elsewhere across Brevard’s five other wastewater treatment plants, one exciting process all Sircello’s own is newly in use and will spread to other sites. Currently, wastewater from restaurant kitchens ― collected separately from sewage in “grease traps” that must be tapped and
trucked to the treatment plant ― costs $55 per 1,000 gallons to treat because it must be jacked up with caustic lime calcium hydroxide to kill organisms, and is typically spread on ranch lands not used directly to produce food for human consumption.
Ahead of the curve
T
he Department of Environmental Protection requires this process to stop by 2016, and Sircello’s process, which he started experimenting with in 2005, has already been successfully used at the plant for two years. The cost: $25 per ton, the dried solids having been removed from the water. Considering that water weighs 8.34 pounds a gallon, the cost is not simply a quarter of what it was; the price reduction is astounding. These goals in sight, Sircello is setting his eye on what to do after retirement. An accomplished classical as well as jazz pianist, he can be found practicing a symphony he is sketching on Sunday afternoons where his Via Tuscany neighbors in Viera beg him to open his windows and share. He’ll get back to training horses ― a skill that won him many an acting job in his former California home “whenever they wanted someone who looked like an Indian and could also ride a horse.” A pilot, Sircello also wants to travel the world and stays young in preparation for these carefree days doing lots of yoga. In the meantime, his job is his vocation. He shares his passion for Viera Voice Linda Wiggins letting nature Contrary to the assumptions of tour takers, the brown floaters return itself to nature with are stacks of string-like organisms that form stacks as they tours of Boy feed and multiply.

He replaced Rev. Rick Jones, who after a decade in the position, relocated with his wife, Lynette, a teacher at Suntree United Methodist School on campus, to become senior pastor of a United Methodist church in Central Florida. “The position was perfect for me because as an ordained deacon, my mission is to help bring the world to the church,” Robin Johnson said at the annual block party July 11 at the church. It is his first time holding a position as children’s minister. The event, which called the community out for free music, food and fun to check out services offered, was right up his alley because families often choose a church for quality

Candidate Curt Smith agreed that the intersection can be hazardous, but said Wickham Road-widening work at Interstate 95 should ease traffic and might eliminate the need for a light. Reducing the size of the island at Interlachen Road and adding another turn lane there also might help, he noted. Jones said he supported the idea of a traffic light, but warned the project might cost $750,000 to complete because of utilities that would have to be moved. “We’re going to get it done,
but it’s going to cost a lot more money than we think,” he said. When asked what sets him apart from the other candidates, candidate Frank Zilaitis said he believes the county needs to stress ethics and free-market capitalism. “I’m saying there’s a philosophical divide,” he said. Richard Charbonneau said he would work to resolve acrimony on the commission. “If elected, that would be one of the prime things that I would do — to get people to shake hands,” he said. New app will revolutionize Internet reading at the speed of sight When the eyes fixate on one point, the brain has a higher chance of quickly processing the word and its meaning, and saves time by no longer having to constantly reposition the eye from word to word, or find the proper sentence line when moving back from right to left. The company is
experimenting with other services to determine how it can enhance delivery, such as Facebook or Twitter. Long threads of tweets or detailed Facebook statuses could be read in a few seconds, for example. For more information, go to spritzinc.com. VV

Suntree/Viera Library director Mary Scholtz said the new app Spritz is positioned to revolutionize the way we read Internet content on our personal e-devices. By Linda Wiggins
According to Suntree/ Viera Library director Mary Scholtz, the way we absorb information online is about to change. “As if there were not already enough change in the digital world, I think this is going to be incredible for those who are interested, Scholtz said. Spritz is a tool that eliminates the eye’s need to move from left to right when it reads. Instead, the eye stays in place and a single word is fed to it at a rate that can make the standard novel a 90-minute read. Reading speeds can easily triple. “Your eyes don’t have to move, and instead each word is rapidly streamed to one spot at a speed you choose, which enables you to read more in
less time, Scholtz said, adding that a letter in the center of the word is colored red to help the brain focus. “It’s really quite easy to do. Right now, there is an easy download to an Internet browser that can speed e-read nearly any website. Eventually, it will be imbedded in smart phones, initially going out in the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Gear 2 smart watch this past April a month after its official launch. The company has not yet determined how to distribute or price the technology, but recently released a paid app called ReadMe! Scholtz reported the advancement in a recent issue of The Liaison, the quarterly newsletter for the Friends of the Suntree/Viera Library, in which she highlights news that affects libraries and readers.
“In the past couple of years, our patrons have been thrilled to be able to check out e-books and read them on their tablets, smart phones or good old desktop or laptop PCs, Scholtz said. “I think that for those who are interested, this will really take them to the next level in consuming information, including products offered in our collection. The technology is under development by Spritz CEO and co-founder Frank Waldman with partner Maik Maurer “to create a product that enables the fastest delivery system for content in an age where we consume so much on tiny-screen phones, according to a report in BusinessInsider.com. Spritz utilizes a speedreading method called Rapid Serial Visual Presentation.

Crest Cleaners, Dunkin’ Donuts and Wren Insurance Agency hosted a combined ribbon cutting in July at the new plaza at 5525 Porada Drive in Viera, on Stadium Parkway just south of Viera Boulevard. The three stores will provide 22 jobs, said plaza and Crest Cleaners owner Keith Houston. It is Viera’s first Crest Cleaners location and the 11th in Brevard. Wren Insurance, which has a main office in Palm Bay, moved over from vacated space on N. Wickham Road at Murrell Road. Dunkin’ Donuts has indoor and outdoor seating and drive-through service. Viera VA Clinic nursing wins make history By Linda Wiggins
A Viera nurse won the VA Outpatient Clinic in Viera its second consecutive No. 1 award from among the entire nation’s VA medical centers and outpatient clinics. It was a first in VA history.
Tanya Peterson received the 2014 Secretary of Veterans Affairs Award for Excellence in the Staff Nurse category from the Department of Veterans Affairs in a ceremony at the Viera facility July 16 after being notified in May. Facility
nurse Lisa Lang won that award last year. “Lisa Lang and Tanya Peterson won back-to-back SVA awards in 2013 and 2014, making Viera the first VA outpatient clinic to place national winners consecutively,” said Mike Strickler, VA Medical Center Orlando spokesperson. “It’s a pretty significant achievement, considering there are more than 150 medical centers and 770 OPCs nationally. It’s a great example of how successful VA healthcare providers can be when their

leadership works as hard for them as they do for the veterans they serve. Pretty remarkable.” Peterson was commended by clinic nursing manager Dawn Mossing, who nominated her this year and Lang last year, for her positive attitude. “Obviously Tanya provides exceptional care to our veterans at the Viera OPC,” Mossing said. “She is recognized among the staff as an outstanding nurse, one who works closely with our providers and staff to provide superior care to
each and every veteran.” Peterson summed up the most effective tool in her kit the past nine years working as a nursing liaison to Viera’s endoscopy/surgical services department. “I work in a department where veterans are usually apprehensive walking in the door, due to the invasive nature of what we do in endoscopy,” Peterson said. “So I do my best to relax them and let them know they’re cared for here, and of course that begins with a big smile.” VV

Handball, golf routine keeps Viera resident fit By Jeff Navin
VIERA VOICE Jeff Navin
Dale Zeigler, a resident of Viera, hopes to do well in the National 3-Wall Handball Tournament this September in Toledo, Ohio.
Joliet, Ill., played handball for the first time while he was a student at the University of Northern Illinois, where he majored in business management. After braving the harsh winters of the Midwest for his whole life, Zeigler accepted a job as a contract specialist for NASA and moved to Florida in 1979. “I played handball off and on until 1988,’’ said Zeigler,

handball, you have to use both hands. It takes a while to become comfortable using your off hand. Eye and hand coordination is so important and you have to be ambidextrous. At the top level, you have to use both hands equally as well. The luxury of racquetball is you don’t need to use your off hand. You have the backhand.’’ A perfect day for Zeigler is the unconventional doubleheader of golf in the morning and handball in the afternoon. “This is an attempt to stay young,’’ Zeigler said. “After a day of both golf and handball, I’ll be in the jacuzzi tonight with a cold beer. I feel lucky to be doing this and I want to try to do this as long as I can. It’s become tougher and tougher to do both sports in the same day. I want to keep doing both until I can’t.’’ The two sports are a study in contrasts, which makes it both fun and frustrating for Zeigler, who lives in a house where his backyard connects to Viera East Golf Club. “My goal in golf is to shoot my age,’’ Zeigler said. “It’s been my biggest challenge to do well in both sports. I’m
not a good golfer, but I have gone from a 22 handicap to a 15. I recently shot 79, so I think I have the potential.’’ The physical attributes which make Zeigler an elite player in handball leave him susceptible to flaws when it comes to maintaining consistency with his golf swing. “My hands take over in my golf swing,’’ Zeigler said. “It’s almost like they have a mind of their own. I’ve got to slow down. In handball, I’m hustling, pushing myself and running. In golf, I have to settle down and get into a smooth rhythm. Getting my hands to not be active is a challenge.’’ Zeigler, who worked in real estate after retiring from NASA, moved to Viera from Merritt Island in 2000. He and his wife recently became grandparents for the first time. They have three children. Beth is a mental health counselor in Alabama; Todd is an orthopedic surgeon in Boise, Idaho; and Marla is a teacher at Merritt Island Christian School. Interested handball players can call Zeigler at 321-5440363 to join his informal group of players. VV

Dale Zeigler’s favorite number nowadays is 75. The Viera resident will turn 75 in November, which makes him eligible to compete in the 75-and-older division in the National 3-Wall Handball Tournament scheduled for Labor Day weekend in Toledo, Ohio. Zeigler qualified for the prestigious competition when he placed second in the 70 singles and teamed up with Denny Fehr of Stuart to win the 70 doubles in the Florida State 3-Wall Handball Tournament during Memorial Day weekend in Ormond Beach. “I’ve been to the nationals before, but this time I wanted to put it off until I reached the 75 division,’’ Zeigler said. “The 70-yearold (players) are a little faster and stronger than me at this point. There will be 300 to 400 participants from all over the country in the different divisions. I haven’t had any injuries and I’m in pretty decent shape. At the national level, these guys are really good, but I think that I can give them a good game.’’ Zeigler, who grew up in
who lived on Merritt Island when he worked for NASA. “Then, I became very serious and started practicing a lot. Up until then, all the guys were beating me. It was practice and practice until I got better. I wasn’t real successful until I turned 60, and that’s when I started winning tournaments.’’ The development of his game could have happened sooner. “There were 40 guys playing handball two miles away that we didn’t know about,’’ said the 5-foot-7, 170-pound Zeigler. “I’d like to have people who move here and have played handball to contact me. We’re always looking for new players. This is not a sport that you take up in your later years. It takes too long to become good at it. It’s something that you don’t learn overnight.’’ The popularity of racquetball also has whittled the potential pool of handball players. “Most handball players nowadays are seniors,’’ said Zeigler, who has been married to his wife Margaret for 51 years. “Taking up racquetball is so much easier to play and learn. Beyond the Curb: reducing landfill use By Marcia Booth president and founder, Recycle Brevard
In Brevard County, singlestream recycling has made life a lot easier. It also has made recycling rates go up significantly and they continue to climb, according to the latest report
that consolidates 2013 recycling data published by Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). In that report, Florida DEP announces that “traditional recycling rate increased by three percent [statewide] from 35 percent in 2012 to 38 percent in 2013” and
Brevard County, with a rate of 52 percent, ranked as one of the top 10 counties with highest recycling rates in Florida. That is excellent news, but what can we do to help increase that rate and push Florida closer to the goal set by the Florida legislature in 2008 of a recycling rate of 75
percent by the year 2020? The report recognizes that “increasing commercial recycling would have a substantial positive effect on the recycling numbers as a whole [because] commercial municipal solid waste accounts for approximately 55 percent of the total municipal solid waste in Florida [and] only about half of the commercial solid waste in Florida is being recycled.” If you do not own a business, you can still make a difference. Following the order of importance of the 3Rs, you should first try to reduce what goes in your garbage can by cutting down any unnecessary waste — e.g. plastic bags, disposable/ one-time use items, and packaging — and placing in your recycling cart everything that is accepted by curbside collection. For items not accepted on the curb, you may still be able to divert them from the landfill. Donate usable items to charities and look online for alternative places to take unwanted items, like batteries or hangers from drycleaners, at Earth911. com or in Brevard County’s Recyclopedia available on the recycling page of the county’s website. If you would like to support a school or a nonprofit organization, you may choose to upcycle with Terracycle (terracycle.com). Terracycle is a for-profit company that “collects
Upcoming Public Hearing for the Viera East Community Development District The District will hold two public hearings on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 6:00 PM at the Faith Lutheran Church, 5550 Faith Drive, Viera Florida 32955. The purpose of these public hearings is to consider the adoption of the District’s budgets and to determine and levy assessments. The District imposes special assessments each year on the residents of the District, the purpose of which is to fund the District’s general administrative and maintenance budget and to provide the funds necessary to pay debt service on outstanding bonds reflected in the District’s debt service and enterprise budgets. Beginning in fiscal year 2015, the Series 2006 bonds will require the District to begin the payment of both principal and interest. Prior to fiscal year 2015 interest only was paid on this bond series. The District operates and maintains drainage facilities, recreational facilities, including the Viera East Golf Club, roadways and other capital improvements. The budget is adopted each year after consideration by the Board and after the holding of a public hearing. This year, as in the past, the District will be collecting the assessments on the Brevard County Tax Bill. Each unit in the District is assigned an assessment per the District’s assessment methodology on file at the offices of the District Manager, Governmental Management Services, located at 135 W. Central Boulevard, Suite 320 Orlando, Florida 32801. As a result of the debt service increase, the District expects to levy no more than $678.35 per residential unit in fiscal year 2015. Please note that you have the right to appear at this public hearing and express any comments or suggestions you may have pertaining to the budget. Copies of the proposed budget are available on the District website at www.vieraeastcdd.com. No copies of the budget will be available at the meetings on August 28, 2014.

difficult-to-recycle packaging and products and repurposes (or upcycles) the material into affordable, innovative products.” You can sign up for free to any Terracycle brigades to collect, ship and get awarded points that can be converted to a donation to the school or nonprofit organization of your choice. If you are not interested in signing up for a brigade, Recycle Brevard partnered with other organizations to have drop-off locations available in Brevard. For a list of those locations, visit RecycleBrevard.org. Points are also awarded by Recyclebank (Recyclebank. com), a company that “partners with communities all over the country and offers new ways for you to learn, earn points and shop online.” Registering on their website is free and while you learn about green living, you earn points that can be redeemed for coupons and discounted online purchases. You can also earn points for recycling at home, but for that your hauler or city needs to partner with Recyclebank. You can send a letter to your hauler or your city asking them to participate in the Recyclebank program and the whole community wins. Rewards for recycling are currently available in a few communities, so why not add yours to the list, too? In the end, helping Florida achieve a 75 percent recycling rate by 2020 is a combined effort of combined actions that presents a challenge to all of us. Where some see difficulties, I see possibilities; a lot of possibilities. We need to go beyond the curb to find alternative ways to divert waste from our landfills. The more we do, the closer we get to that goal. VV Contact Marcia Booth at Marcia@RecycleBrevard.org.

The travel industry publication Travel Weekly selected Jean Paugh to attend the Global Travel Marketplace, a threeday, appointment-only event in Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale, in July. Of thousands of travel entrepreneurs, only 103 North American applicants met the strict requirements to attend. “I was honored to be chosen to attend for a second consecutive year,” Paugh said. “This is one of the most prestigious events of the year to attend. Summer Pet Tips
By Ian Birkbeck, DVM Island Animal Hospital at Viera
We’re cruising along through another Space Coast summer. We’ve made it about halfway, but there are still plenty of barbecues, pool parties and road trips to come. In this article, I’ll list some quick tips to keep in mind while you and your pets are enjoying some summer fun and trying to beat the heat. • The Florida heat can be very dangerous for your furry friends. Dogs and cats, just like us, are susceptible to overheating. Take plenty of breaks to rest and cool off when
playing or walking outside. Limit or even avoid outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Signs of overheating include panting, weakness, vomiting, even collapse. Heat stroke is a medical emergency so contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of these symptoms. • A dog’s footpads can burn on hot surfaces. Be careful not to spend too much time on pavement or hot sand to avoid injuries. • Always have plenty of fresh water available. Dogs can

lose large amounts of fluid through panting, their primary means of cooling off. Dehydration can cause numerous health issues for your pet, so be sure to take water breaks and carry plenty of water with you if going for long walks. • Be extra careful to remember your pets’ parasite prevention. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and is a year-round concern in Florida. However, summertime often means more time outdoors and more mosquitoes, so it’s extra important to have atrisk pets on regular
preventative medication. • Never leave a pet unattended in a parked car. You may only be planning for a short trip into the store, but even in a short time the temperature inside a car can rise to dangerous or even fatal levels. • Many pets experience motion sickness or anxiety on car trips. If you are planning a summer road trip, ask your veterinarian about options for treating nausea or anxiety to make your pet more comfortable. • When traveling, make sure your pet has up-to-date identification. That can
be in the form of an ID tag (check to make sure old tags are still accurate and legible). Consider having your veterinarian implant a microchip (a quick procedure, similar to getting a shot) as a form of permanent identification. • Pets loose in a car can be a distraction to the driver. Using a well-ventilated carrier for cats and small dogs can help keep them comfortable and prevent accidents. If you have any pet medical questions you’d like to see answered in a future column, you can email them to me at Dr.Ian@IslandAnimal.com. VV

Meet Pepper Owned by the LeRoys
Our cat’s official name is Mr. Pepperdolphilous, but we call him “Pepper. He’s 5 years old and originally came from Chicago, Ill. He’s been in a cat show, but he had little interest in the process so he retired soon after. He looks very regal, but he’s really more of a silly cat who is a wee bit awkward because he walks with his paws turned outward. He’s very loving, vocal and almost never unsheathes his claws.
