Allen & Company of Viera donated $1,500 so Suntree Rotary Club volunteers could refurbish and outfit the Teen Center at the Boys & Girls Club at Temple Terrace in Melbourne May 17. The economically challenged area is near the Booker T. Washington community, a few miles south of Suntree. Suntree Rotary has the largest membership in Brevard and raises the most money for local and international charity projects. “We decided to take on the project, and I thought I would mention it to my firm,” said Bill Slover, a Suntree Rotary officer and investment broker at the Viera office of Allen & Company, Florida’s oldest established investment and securities firm. “They thought it was a great investment in our community.” According to Suntree Rotary President Bill Means, that is the strength behind the club.

Viera gardener’s exotic plants thrive in Florida by Rae Botsford

Amid the hum of bumblebees and the fragrance of exotic flowers, Claudia Estes is most at home. The hobby gardener’s house in Indian River Colony Club is surrounded by a sea of flowers and trees that she has planted there, many of which ordinarily would never share space. Potted orchids line her screenedin front porch, and her back porch boasts a well-aged bonsai tree. Estes grew up in a military family that traveled wherever her vice admiral father was called. “As a little girl, I got a penny for every 10 weeds I pulled out of the lawn and I got two cents for every flower I could remember the name of,” Estes said. “We’ve

Europe, or Japan, or here in the U.S.” Her first husband was in the Navy, and her current husband is in the Air Force, so she kept traveling and kept planting. She’s been at IRCC since 1997. Gardening in Florida is not like gardening up North, she said. Her Virginia garden included hundreds of bulb plants, like daffodils and tulips, which need cold winters. “I love learning the different flowers that grow here and the ones that don’t, and the frustrations of hurricanes,” Estes said. “It’s an entirely different way of gardening.”

Her husband used to grudgingly help dig holes, but now she hires someone to help with such backbreaking tasks. “I don’t grow it for anyone else,” Estes said. “I grow it because I love every bloom on every plant.” VV

turn it into a team building experience and get staff out there volunteering,” Slover said. “It feels great to be a part of something so positive.” Some Rotary members are retired, giving them extra time to devote to community causes, and Temple Terrace is one of Rotary member Bob Harmeyer’s passions. Heeding his wife’s dying wish to go on without her and “do good things,” he is a fixture at the club and recruited Lowe’s, Home Depot and Richards Paints to contribute materials, with volunteers fueled by donated Krispy Kreme donuts. The money from Slover’s firm will be used to purchase desks, couches and other items to make the club a place teens love to hang out. That is a crucial factor, said Michael

Mother’s Day a dream come true for child, family By Linda Wiggins

This year’s Mother’s Day was beyond special for Michelle Bordin because she was able to hold “all her children in her arms” for the first time. A special ceremony called a baby

dedication was held on the holiday to lift up Sam and also acknowledge fellow congregants at Church at Viera for their roles in the year-plus process of getting the abandoned orphan from Haiti to his new Viera home. “Practically his first words

home to help offset costs associated with the adoption, which included trips an average of every other month to visit Sam and medical bills. The idea to add to the family was not out of necessity — Michelle and Stephen already have three biological children, Isabel, Cole and Jack — but out of love abundant enough to share. They started the journey on a fall 2012 church mission trip to Haiti, and that December, after much family prayer and unanimous decision, opted to pursue adoption. Paperwork was submitted to Haiti and in January the Bordins found Sam at an orphanage there. A Viera Voice story in early 2013 outlined the coming saga. Immediately after the request for adoption, Haitian laws were changed to consolidate all adoptions through one government agency, limiting adoption referrals to 19 orphanages for the entire country. Red tape mounted, and many visits to Haiti promised to be the last before Sam could leave. Frustration and sadness were instead the borne fruit. Church at Viera’s Haiti mission stepped up and many volunteers stepped in. When Michelle could not be there, church members went and sent back selfie pictures of Sam in their loving embrace. “I was so happy to see him getting loving care,” Bordin wrote in her blog of the ongoing experience of many ups and downs at bringinghomesamb.blogspot. com.

Just when it looked like Sam was destined to leave the country, he became severely ill, his eye grossly swollen and brain inflammation suspected. Bordin’s blogs became frantic, but persistent. She would not leave without him again. It was February and her intent was to bring him home for Valentine’s Day. She stood in long lines to get medical aid in Haiti, only to be told to stand in another long line to pay in full before treatment would be administered. Another test? Another long wait to pay in full, before another long wait for treatment, which meant pleading with overworked doctors, mostly volunteers from the United States and Canada, to see Sam. At one point, Bordin waited with another mother, and by the time the mother could pay, her baby had died. Sam made it out Feb. 22. Such is life for little ones in a country so poor. While missionaries and volunteers work to improve living conditions in Haiti orphanages, foreign adoption is the only guaranteed escape from early death. The yard sale will be at 1462 Old Millpond Rd. in the Crane Creek subdivision of Viera. To drop off donated items, email bringinghomesam@ gmail.com. To make a taxdeductible donation that will be matched, go to lifesongfororphans.org and select “Give to an Adoptive Family,” and enter Family Number: 4358 and Family Name: Bordin. VV

Book sale puts love for library on the shelf

By Linda Wiggins

The fundraising group Friends of the Suntree/ Viera Library raised a record $7,000-plus in its twiceyearly book sale at the end of April. Book sale proceeds and membership dues pay for items not called for in the lean Brevard County budgets of recent years. “We really have to thank generous patrons who donate books all year long that, if they aren’t put out on the shelves, are set aside for the sales,” said Bobbi Shaw, Friends’ past president and coordinator of the book sales. The library is the busiest in Brevard County in terms of materials checked out, and nearly the highest in foot traffic. One of the items Friends pays for is the Summer Reading Program starting this month in which children earn Book Bucks for reading each day and attending fun library programs each Friday,

such as the popular Jiggleman performance. Including the prizes provided to the children for their earned bucks, the price tag averages $5,000 a summer. The program runs June 9 through July 28 and materials pickup starts June 2. “It is through this generosity that we can offer variety of program events through the summer and all year,” said Scott Hauge, head of Youth Services. One of the many ways Friends enhances the adult areas of the library is by improving access to popular titles and increasing purchases of Stellar Sellers, the most popular books and DVDs. “We needed some shelving designed, but it was pretty pricey and out of reach,” library director Mary Scholtz said. Friends provided the funding and volunteer carpenters Bobby “Ray” Burch Jr. and Tyson Dominy, brother of staffer Barbara McKinney and husband of staffer Yvonne

Dominy, respectively, built a three-tiered display and a tall bookshelf for Stellar Sellers and large print books. “Practically the minute a volunteer puts one book down a patron picks it up. The areas are that well used,” Scholtz said. The Friends, who literally built the library itself, lobbying for its funding from its humble beginnings in a strip mall to a free-standing facility, believe the library is an important

cultural center. Many have been members from the start, paying the modest $5 dues a year as individuals or $10 for a family, which when combined with book sales and patron donations can allow for improvements of $25,000 to $50,000 some years. “Libraries are like a second home for many,” Friends’ new president Betty Minton said in the group’s recent quarterly Liaison newsletter, “and that is what the Friends and I want to

make sure stays in place.” Friends meets at 3 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month at the library, 902 Jordan Blass Dr. in Suntree. Association Living Frank Kneiser, CMCA, AMS, PCAM

Early preparation for hurricane season “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” certainly applies as hurricane season approaches, June 1. It’s never too soon for associations to formulate a plan. Space in this column only allows covering the highlights. Your association may want to set up a committee or appoint a chairperson to be sure all the details of your community are addressed. The on-site manager or management company should put these plans in place and coordinate with the board to be sure they are implemented. I suggest an actual checklist be prepared so you can rest assured all the bases are covered. Many precautions can be taken far in advance. Be sure that emergency lighting and any stand-by power supplies are functioning properly. Hurricane shutters may be sticky or corroded during the winter months. Make sure trees are trimmed and hedges pruned. Buildings should be inspected for loose tiles, shingles and wood. Communities with lakes and canals should be sure the

ingress and egress levies are clear and working properly to prevent unnecessary flooding. Plan evacuation routes of buildings or common areas. Consider how elderly and disabled residents will be assisted. Check all of your insurance policies with your agent. Insurance companies do not allow changes to policies when a storm is approaching. A hurricane “watch” is issued when a storm is 24 to 36 hours away. A hurricane “warning” is 24 hours before the storm. Depending on the size of your community, these time frames need to be considered when commencing the plan. Swimming pool water should be lowered. Make sure there are extra chemicals to prevent pollution during a power outage. Anything loose in common areas or balconies should be secured. You’ll be surprised how the heavy items are blown about by a hurricane. This is designed to be a primer for associations to consider. Your association

Area welcomes EATz, remembers the good old days By George White

It’s like a reunion for the owners and employees at EATz, formerly located in downtown Melbourne. A decade after hurricanes closed the place, former employees are now working at the new EATz location at 7965 Wickham Rd. which

Hurricanes Francis and Jeanne may have run them out of downtown Melbourne, but the old crew is excited to work near Viera. “We asked them to get back into the business and there was no hesitation. We pulled everybody out of retirement,’’ he said. And even some current

customers remember the old location fondly, he said. “Believe it or not, since we’ve opened we’ve also had some of our old customers from downtown who now live or work in this area,’’ he said. For more information, call 321-426-7575. VV

Also now joining in the fun from the old days: Tim Hall and Ted Fogle and waitress Donna Tardiff. “We had an original location in downtown Melbourne but we lost that to the hurricanes in 2004. It was destroyed. It’s now Mustard’s Last Stand. We were there for years, but two hurricanes did it. It was one right after another. It was a lot smaller. In comparision, this place is huge,’’ he said. EATz offers specialty soups, sandwiches, salads, subs and quiches. includes a Viera/Suntree office. “We want to make consumers and businesses aware that many of the products they purchase are made locally, and given a choice, they can purchase them locally and help themselves and their neighbors,” said Elizabeth Huy, manager of Business Development for the EDC and coordinator of the Made In Brevard program. The effort hopes to raise awareness among local businesses to register their products made locally. There are more than 500 manufacturers in Brevard, according to the EDC website. Businesses signed up so far can be researched by business name, type of industry and many other criteria. “That is the most direct way to build commerce and put ourselves and our neighbors to work, increasing prosperity,” Huy said. The second focus of Made In Brevard is to raise awareness of the importance of having manufacturing businesses located in the area, and to minimize any not-in-my-backyard sentiment. “Today’s manufacturing is clean and green, and businesses are a valuable asset to their neighbors in many ways,” Huy said. “The ripple effect of products made and sold continuously adds value beyond the initial workers in these jobs, to other businesses as workers make purchases, from homes to cars to restaurant meals and store goods and on and on.” The Titusville-based Barn Light Electric, a Made In Brevard campaign

participant, was recently featured in a May 12 CNBC.com story that highlighted companies not only producing locally but exporting to other countries. It stated: “One bet on the economy is that American manufacturing is staging a comeback. With labor costs rising in China, U.S. companies are taking a second look at operations and incorporating more domestic production.” Barn Light Electric is just one example of many local products that are finding their way to markets overseas, Huy noted. Local infrastructure is shifting to capitalize on product export capability, with huge cranes recently arriving at Port Canaveral that will be able to load export containers on ships. The EDC is charged with carrying this message outside Brevard to attract manufacturers to the Space Coast, highlighting its favorable, affordable living conditions, available housing stock and amenities, as well as competitive wages. According to Huy, Made In Brevard promotes the Space Coast’s wide-ranging manufacturers, grows a sense of pride in local manufacturing capabilities, creates understanding for the area’s strengths, including its unified business community, and stimulates economic growth among Brevard County manufacturers and service companies. “It also fosters a unique connection to ‘home,’ ” she said. To find locally made products or for more information, call 321-638-2000 or go to madeinbrevardfl.com. VV

Viera author writes of his journey home by amy blalock

Viera author Dr. Bruce Snavely has published an autobiography, the tale of his unlikely life, titled “All the Way Home.” The book chronicles his life’s journey from promise to devastation and his long road to hope and restoration. Born the son of a preeminent Ivy Leagueeducated doctor, Snavely’s tale begins with a happy, pastoral life in Ohio. His early childhood days were spent on a farm in the late 1950s,

complete with sheep and a pony. Everything fell to pieces after his father’s sudden death left him in the care of an ill-intentioned stepmother. An orphaned ward of the state, Snavely was separated from his family and watched his confident, secure life melt into despair, hooliganism and drug abuse. Snavely’s one aim was always to regain his splintered family and reunite with his brother and sister, but he found little release

from his pain. “What good is family if it’s not together?” he writes. “What good is love if you can’t share it?” Sports were his only outlet, and even that was shortlived. He spent almost a decade in foster care, barely graduating from high school. After many close calls and his sister’s murder, he finds himself faced with the weighty reality of death. He recalls later, “I had, for some time, been walking the line between jail and an early grave, just like my sister Lee.” A chance encounter with a long-lost acquaintance leads him to ask himself, “What if God had allowed everything over the last eight years to bring me to this single, solitary moment?” “All the Way Home” shares a life-changing decision and the path that brought Snavely hope and saved his life. Eventually, Bruce Snavely, hopeless, drug-abusing brawler, became Bruce Snavely, Ph.D. and college professor. Bruce and his wife Grace are now grandparents, and together they run Global Baptist Training Foundation, a nonprofit that trains Christian pastors throughout the world. Written in easy, prosaic language, “All the Way Home” is an enjoyable, engaging addition to any summer reading list. It offers a vivid look at life in

Summertime in Brevard county means barbecues, trips to the beach and Manatees baseball. It also means more seasonal thunderstorms and, for those living around Space Coast Stadium, several nights of postgame fireworks. These last two can be a source of stress and anxiety for many pets, particularly for those affected by thunderstorm or firework phobias. A phobia, just as with humans, is a fear response that is disproportionate to the actual threat. Dogs and cats can develop a variety of potential phobias, with thunderstorms (and loud noises in general) being one of the most common. Phobia symptoms in dogs include trembling, shaking, vocalizing, panting, and restlessness. In severe cases the pet may exhibit

Taming thunderstorm phobia destructive behavior or soil the carpet. The severity of the symptoms may worsen over time and persist for longer and longer. Cats may show similar symptoms, but more often display anxiety by going into hiding for extended periods of time. There are two main approaches to treating phobias: behavioral modification and medications. Both may be needed to achieve the best results. Behavioral modification involves rewarding the pet for any relaxed behavior. Give positive reinforcement to dogs (petting, treats) while maintaining eye contact as long as the pet is acting calmly. A command such as “calm or “relax can be added. This can then be used to calm the dog when a potential anxiety trigger

arises. Desensitization can be helpful in some cases, but it must be done very slowly. This can work if pets are responding to noise. A recording of a thunderstorm or fireworks can be played while giving the pet positive reinforcement. The trick is to play the recording at a volume below the point where the pet becomes anxious. Then slowly, over time, the volume can be increased while continuing to provide positive reinforcement. Once the pet begins showing signs of anxiety, the volume should be turned down. This is then repeated during several sessions, which may decrease the pet’s response to the noise. Anti-anxiety medications can be beneficial in many cases. It’s important

to remember that most anxiety conditions are due to a functional problem in the brain rather than a vengeful or spiteful pet. Because the problem stems from brain chemistry, medications that alter that chemistry can alleviate the symptoms. There are several types of anti-anxiety medications commonly prescribed for pets, including benzodiazepines, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Each category of medication works in a slightly different way and may be better suited to different anxiety triggers.

For example, a short-acting, rapid-onset medication may be a better fit for a cat that experiences anxiety from a few minutes of post-baseball fireworks every couple weeks, whereas longeracting medication may be better for a dog experiencing thunderstorms every couple of days for months. Thunderstorms may be an unavoidable part of living in Florida, but fortunately your pet’s thunderstorm and other noise phobias don’t have to be. Summer foster homes needed

Poodle and Pooch Rescue saves dogs that are not adopted from animal control, provides veterinary care and finds them homes. Summer is the dog-dumping season. More requests for help are received from animal control during the summer than any other season. After the dogs have been fully vetted and groomed, they are ready to go to a foster home. Everything the foster family needs is provided so there is no expense to them. These dogs just need a safe place to live for three weeks while forever homes are found. Contact Poodle and Pooch Rescue at info@ poodleandpoochrescue.org or call us at 321-277-3089 if you would like to foster a dog. Visit the website at poodleandpoochrescue.org to meet some of the dogs.
