The Suntree YMCA Family Center just got in better shape. Work crews from Pavco Contracting recently completed extensive renovations at the health facility at 6300 N. Wickham Road at the Centre at Suntree Plaza, providing it with a new entrance, redesigning
“We knocked some walls down and put some other walls up,” Rowlette said. “Even though we lost some square footage, it actually feels bigger. We have more space in certain areas.” The center never had to close during renovations, which started in midSeptember, Rowlette said. “They worked around the clock, they worked late at night, they’ve come in early in the morning,” he said. “We worked to make sure we didn’t hinder our members in any way.” Reaction from members has been “very positive,” Rowlette said. “It’s been funny to see people who haven’t been here and they haven’t seen the changes. Their eyes kind of open up,” he said. “We walk them through, give them a tour, show them the layout.” Rowlette hopes to mark the facility’s new look with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in January. “We’d like to get the community involved, bring everybody out and get the big, giant scissors out,” Rowlette said. “That’s our big kickoff, our big time of year. So how great would it be to do a ribbon-cutting sometime in the month of January?” VV Suntree YMCA Family Center, 6300 N. Light Up Viera 2014 Winter Festival featuring a Holiday Village and Parade made its debut Nov. 21 featuring live entertainment by the Viera High School Theater Arts department and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet. The parade followed on Nov. 29, the day after the popular postThanksgiving Black Friday shopping day. The free festival is open to the public through Christmas Day, with passes available for purchase for featured attractions and a food court featuring holiday favorite meals and treats. Winter-themed festivities include an ice skating rink the size of a basketball court, a 90-foot snow slide, a giant snowman bounce house and a huge snow globe that is the go-to place for families to step inside to have the perfect photo snapped for Christmas cards. Families can watch while local artists Jill Harris and Thomas Koet from Sandsational bring a lifesize Santa’s workshop sand sculpture to life the first week of December, and enjoy daily visits with Santa starting Dec. 8. There will be carolers and jazz and other live bands on stage throughout the 35 days of festivities. Viera Legends softball game a winner in more ways than one

Various “celebrity” softball players came out Nov. 1 to play against the Viera Legends and the coaches of the local Little League. Their sense of humor and love of the game was obvious as they played on this brisk, windy day at Viera Regional Park in Viera. BY ROSEMARY H. LYNN
The Viera Legends played ball Nov. 1 against the Celebrities of Brevard as well as a second game against Little League coaches at the Space Coast Stadium in Viera. The Legends of Viera are a fun and rowdy group of softball enthusiasts age 55 and over. Their sense of fun is contagious. Most are in good shape and play sports or work out on a regular basis. The first game ended with a score of 26-13 in favor of the Legends. Celebrities included Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Rev. Mark Ragsdale of the Church at Viera and several others who hold prestigious titles in Brevard County. The teams gave it their all on this brisk day and lots of
people turned out to watch and enjoy the all-you-can-eat barbecue and pizza provided by Pizza Gallery & Grill. The second game featured the Legends against the Little League coaches. The Legends did better this time, beating the coaches by a score of about 30-3. “We gave up counting in the middle of the game,” laughed Chris Conneen, owner of the Pizza Gallery & Grill. “It was pretty sad for the coaches!” Although the day was chilly, plenty of people spent $10 apiece to support the teams. There were lots of laughs and good-natured teasing as the games were played. There was nothing very serious about either of the innings. Sheriff Ivey’s neon pink socks were the
subject of a lot of ribbing. The next day, the screening of the movie “Extra Innings” was presented at the Heritage Isle Ballroom in Viera. The documentary film follows the world champion senior softball team on an exciting adventure. For a $10 donation, attendees were able to view the film and enjoy movie-style concessions, which benefited the Florida Senior Sports Association and the Viera/ Suntree Little League. The film will be available via YouTube. For more information about the game or the movie, call Chris Conneen at 321-633-0397 or go to pizzagalleryandgrill.com/ events/legends-of-softball. VV
Rodolfo Ortega “ ‘Elf.’ It is funny and it reminds me of when I was a kid.”
Alex Vinicomde and Anthony de Simone “ ‘A Christmas Story.’ ‘You’ll shoot your eye out!’ Also the part when the kid’s tongue gets frozen to the flag pole is hilarious.”
Stephanie Haridopolos “Mike Huckabee’s book ‘Can’t Wait till Christmas.’ I ordered it several years ago and it arrived on Christmas Eve. We have made it a tradition to read it with my three kids since then.”
Tracey Inganna “ ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,’ the one with Burl Ives, because it reminds me of my childhood”
Dick Baumbach “ ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ It really reflects life if you look at things in a positive light.”

State Attorney’s Office workers make a big Difference Day SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE
A team from State Attorney Phil Archer’s office composed of prosecutors, victim advocates, support staff and families of all the above gave a Rockledge home of two senior citizens a total facelift during the annual USA Weekend Make a Difference Day Saturday. The State Attorney’s Office (SAO) team cleared out an overgrown backyard, cleaned outside surfaces, removed a broken and unused above-ground pool, cut down overhanging tree limbs, installed a storm door, made minor repairs and painted roof eaves, hauled trash, put in a new mailbox, and performed weeding, raking, planting, mulching and beautification on the yard. They also hung new curtains in the front room, presented the residents with a welcome mat, a new patio table, and a basket of household necessities. Broken windows were repaired as part of the project by Coastal Windows, Inc. and Brevard County TRIAD, a consortium of law enforcement and seniors that works to reduce crime, provided funding for the supplies used in the yard work and other repairs. Two local businesses, Chick-fil-A and Viera Pizza, provided lunch for the workers. At the end of the day, the home looked like it had experienced a face lift, shedding 20 years off its age. The improvements not only helped the look of the house but also made it safer and more enjoyable for the senior residents. The event was organized by Megan Warren, chair of State Attorney Phil Archer’s Community Outreach Committee, along with fellow volunteer and SAO employee Judy Bushey. V V

Batman’s wheels draw squeals from Manatee Elementary students BY MIKE GAFFEY
As she gazed at the oddly shaped, big-wheeled black vehicle in Manatee Elementary School’s parking lot, a kindergartner shouted in delight. “See? Batman IS real! I knew it!” About 850 students from the area got a superherosized surprise on Oct. 30 as a full-sized, running replica of the Batmobile made famous in “The Dark Knight” movie trilogy made a stop at the school. The streetlegal vehicle, constructed by Port Canaveral-based Parker Brothers Concepts, was on hand to promote the school’s Superhero Walk-A-Thon on Nov. 7. Students dressed in superhero costumes and ran laps during PE class, raising money for activities and class supplies. “It was top secret until
today and then we sprung it on them,” Manatee art teacher and walkathon organizer Ashley Heribacka said of the Batmobile’s visit. The Batmobile didn’t roll out of the Batcave, but was built instead by Shanon and Marc Parker of Melbourne. The brothers, known for their unique concept cars, motorcycles, off-road and movie replica vehicles, recently were stars of the reality television series “Dream Machines” on SyFy. They’ve built custom cars for rapper 50 Cent and WWE wrestler John Cena. One of their concept vehicles, the “battleship shredder,” appeared in the movie “Battleship.” Earlier this year, Parker Brothers Concepts moved from its Aurora Road location to a 20,000-squarefoot facility at 730 Mullet Rd. in Port Canaveral, where its custom creations are on

Shanon Parker said his company used screen captures of the Batmobile from the Batman movies to guide them in building the vehicle, called the “Tumbler” in the films. Work took about 1 1/2 months. The custommade replica sports an LS1 Corvette engine and “Swamp Stomper” rear wheels. There are no ejection seats or missile launchers in the vehicle’s two-seat interior. Instead, crime-fighters can enjoy an iPad and a stereo
while patrolling for crooks. “It’s got switches and there’s some cameras inside, but there’s not a lot of visibility once you get inside,” said Parker, who estimated the Batmobile’s sale price at $500,000. Last year’s Walk-A-Thon raised a record $17,000, said Viera resident Mike Dierking, a Manatee parent and volunteer. “It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for the school,” he said. In the week preceding the Walk-A-Thon, teachers,
parent volunteers and school patrols dressed up in superhero costumes and explained procedures to get students excited about the event, Heribacka said. “This wouldn’t be possible without our parents,” Heribacka said. “It’s amazing how much they help us. Our PTO is great. They’re the ones who do all the work.” For more information, call Manatee Elementary School at 321-433-0050 or go to edline.net/pages/ Manatee_Elementary. VV

p u p a SPORTS Wr Viera girls soccer has right mix for success
BY CARL KOTALA
Take a veteran roster, sprinkle in a few new quality players and add a new playing formation … and you could have something pretty special by season’s end. At least that’s what the Viera High girls soccer team is working toward. “We’re very talented,” Hawks coach Courtney Lundy said. “We’re very good technically and tactically. We should, on paper, have a good season.” Viera was certainly off to a good start, winning its first three games of the season. This year’s team features a nice mixture of players from all grade levels, including seniors Kassidy Mills at center-midfield, Nicki Fisher at outside defender, Tori Clark at outside middle and Hope Leonard on top. “We’re playing a different formation this year,” Lundy
VIERA VOICE CARL KOTALA
This year’s Viera High girls soccer team has talent up and down its lineup, including seniors Nicki Fisher, left, Tori Clark, Hope Leonard and Kassidy Mills. said. “That’s been the biggest change for us. It’s a hard formation to understand, but they’ve done a good job with it. It’s a good formation to go against other teams.”
The switch has some players having to get used to a new position or responsibility, but as Leonard explained, the formation allows the Hawks
to take advantage of a number of situations on the offensive end. “With high school soccer, the concentration tends to be in the midfield rather than out wide,” she said. “By having four in the midfield, it lets us win midfield 5050 balls that are sent to the midfield off goal kicks. It also lets us work in the midfield a little bit more. “The outside backs are also kind of a surprise, because they’re able to run up with our formation because there’s so much space outside.” The change will also be noticeable on the other end, where dynamic freshman keeper Sydney Lau, junior center back Sarah Sanford and sophomore center back Shannon Gosule form the backbone of the defense. Junior outside defender Sarah Kelliher is one of the team captains, freshman
Brookelyn Walsh is playing outside-mid and her sister, Jordan Walsh — a junior — is an attacking center-mid and also a team captain. Sophomore Hollyn Knight plays up top and sophomore Morgan Pulliam stands out for her speed and versatility. “I think what’s different about this high school team is that a lot of players have known each other for so long, so our bond is (really close). We all throw it back really far,” Fisher said. “With some of the younger girls, my sister (Cori) has played with some of them since she was 7, so I’m family friends with most of them. I think we’re closer than most (other teams).” If there is one other thing the Hawks have this season, it’s confidence. “This year, personally, I believe with this team we can conquer almost any obstacle,” Leonard said. Viera girls win second state golf title; boys come in sixth BY CARL KOTALA
Earlier this fall, both Viera High golf coaches expressed confidence that their teams would be able to make it to the Class 3A state tournament. In fact, boys coach Paul Bentley said at the time, “We’ve got to go to states, or it’s a failure.” Well, the season was anything but a failure for both Hawks teams. The Viera girls won their second state championship, leading from start to finish and erasing the disappointment of a year earlier when they finished second. The boys, meanwhile, finished sixth in their third state tournament appearance and gained some valuable experience on the big stage. “We knew we had the horses to do it,” Viera girls coach Greg Ford said.

The girls consistently just raise the bar for our program, and now they’ve raised it again by doing this.” Junior Taylor Rajeski led

the way for the Hawks, shooting 73 and 76 during the two days to total 149. She was followed by Sophie Liu (79-74—153), Dayna Owens (80-79—159), Samantha Brimhall (84-80—164) and Amber Rivera (99-98—197). Rajeski, who finished fifth overall, said the Hawks didn’t fret about the past and simply went out on the second day, played their game, and eventually pulled away for a five-stroke win. “I was very steady, and that’s what I was trying to
do,” Rajeski said of her final round. “I took my bogies instead of trying to go for things. Maybe if I was going for the individual title, I would have tried for some more pins out there.” Winning the title after finishing second the previous year was a bit of déjà vu for the Hawks, who did the same thing in 2009-10. The difference in that 2010 team, though, was that it was loaded with seniors. This year’s state championship team didn’t have a single senior.

“That just means we’re going to be even stronger next year,” Rajeski said. “It’s pretty cool. It’s exciting.” Viera’s boys, meanwhile, equaled their highest finish at the state tournament. Freshman Calvin Sierota created quite a buzz, shooting 3-under 69 in his final round for a two-day total of 141, which tied him for fifth overall. It was the lowest score by a freshman — in any class — at the state tournament since 2010. Viera also got solid play from Nico Gagliardi (7579—154), Tyler Greek (7879—157), Ryan Rozic (7781—158) and Kyle De Cenzo (84-83—167). Like the girls, the Hawks will have a number of players coming back. Gagliardi is the only senior. “They were decent last year, better this year … if we all keep practicing, we’re all going to get better,” Sierota said. V V
State recognizes Manatee Elementary PE program SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE
As the years go by and technology improves, healthy habits are needed at an early age. Manatee Elementary School earned a state award for its successful health and education program. Tabitha Best, who operates the program and has taught at Manatee for five years, participates in fun events such as Walk to School Day, the annual walkathon, and the daily Morning Mile. The award for her program was recognized by the state of Florida and earned the school the 2014 SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) Florida Program Recognition Award. This was presented to Carl Brown, principal, and Best, in St. Petersburg in mid October. The Brevard School Board also honored Best at a recent school board meeting Oct. 28. VV

Viera boys soccer setting bar high for this season
VIERA VOICE CARL KOTALA
The Viera Hawks have a veteran roster that not only knows how to play together, but how to win. Pictured are senior captains (from l-r) Dominic Carrillo, Oscar Sang, Stephen Pacheaco and Scott Alliance. BY CARL KOTALA
Having eight returning starters would make any coach feel good about their chances heading into a new season. Viera High boys soccer coach Cory Collins, however, believes the Hawks have something even better going for them this year. “(We’ve got) a lot of players who know how to win,” Collins said. Led by senior captains Stephen Pacheaco, Dominic Carrillo, Scott Alliance and Oscar Sang, the Hawks feature a number of players who have been playing together for years at both the high school and club level. In fact, a number of players were on the Space Coast United U-17 team that won the State Cup last season
and played in the National Premier Leagues Finals for the first time, reaching the semifinals. The confidence gained from that experience, plus the familiarity with each other, has the Hawks setting a goal of a deep playoff run for themselves this season. “We all believe we can go far and even win a state championship,” Pacheaco said. “I would say we’re very confident. We just have to put in the work and let everything work out for itself.” Once again, Melbourne High figures to be the main obstacle for the Hawks this season. The teams played at Melbourne on Nov. 20 and will likely meet again in the district tournament, which will be played at Hawk Stadium.

The Hawks, who were off to a 2-0 start, should be strong in goal with Jacob Kutcher, Will Whisel and Max Pacheaco. However, their strength should come from being able to put pressure on their opponents with a quick transition game and an offense that should thrive from its experience. “We know each other very well,” Carrillo said. “We know what each other’s going to do when we have the ball, when we don’t have the ball … we know what kind of runs each person is going to make. The chemistry is spot on this year.” This year’s Viera team also has the benefit of having Collins back for a second season. Because he got the job late last year, the coach spent the early part of the season getting to know his players. Now, he’s had a full season and a full off-season to get them prepared to make another run at a district title and beyond. “It makes it a lot easier to know who’s coming in,
what kind of shape they’re in and the kind of style they play around their clubs and adapting that to how we’ll play in high school,” Collins said. “If everyone stays Math Help

With every game they play, the Holy Trinity boys soccer team seems to be answering the biggest question mark that surrounded them coming into this season: With prolific scorer Evan Enders having graduated, where is the bulk of the offense going to come from? “The whole team this year is going to have to pitch in with goals,” Tigers coach James Phillips said. “We’ll need some from our midfielders and on set plays our defenders are going to have to come up from the back and get on the end of a few of those. “Obviously, it’s not going to be as easy to rely on Evan to score goals this year. It’s going to be more of a team effort.” Through the early part of the season, that effort was sure paying off. Holy Trinity scored 25 goals in its first four games as it got off to a 3-0-1 start. The Tigers were getting solid play from junior
attacking midfielder Luca Campanini, along with junior forward Matt Austin, a transfer from Rockledge High. Austin certainly proved he can have a big impact for the Tigers. He scored six goals — all in the second half — during a victory against Florida Air Academy. Carlo Campanini, a freshman, scored eight goals in those first four games. Other key players include junior center back Noah Benjamin (who also scored against FAA) and senior goalkeeper Tony Morelli. With only two seniors (Stephan Rotolante is the other senior) and 12 juniors the Tigers are built for success both now and for the future. “We’re growing for next year, definitely, but this year we also feel pretty good about our shot,” Benjamin said. The Tigers would like nothing better than to get further than last year’s team, which went 23-2 but lost in the regional semifinals to
the Pine School — a team they had beaten three times earlier in the season. Holy Trinity will have to go through the Pine School — and five other schools — to claim another district title this season. But as they have already proven, the Tigers will be a tough matchup for any opponent, especially on the offensive end. “We have a lot of good ballhandlers,” Benjamin said. “We’re looking pretty dangerous.” If the younger Tigers can mature and Holy Trinity’s defense holds up, there is no reason to think they can’t make a strong postseason run. This is a group that has pretty much grown up together. It should be interesting to see what it can accomplish as it prepares to take the next step together. “Apart from Austin, most of the players have been in the program since junior high,” Phillips said. “I’m excited to see what they produce this season.” VV

School (Hobe Sound) and St. Edward’s (Vero Beach), figures to be the favorite to repeat as district champions. Last year’s team reached
the regional semifinals. “I think if we get all of our efforts together and get really strong together we can definitely win districts
again,” Elstun said. “St. Edward’s will be a tough game because that’s always a big rival game. We’re very competitive.” VV

This year’s Holy Trinity girls soccer team will be built around a core group of players who have been with the program a long time. And when you’re talking about players like Summer Rydson, Morgan Walker, Kate Elstun, Maleia Storum and Emily Morgan … that’s a very skilled, dangerous group to build around. The Tigers showed just how explosive they can be in their first two games, scoring a total of 19 goals. And that’s while trying to incorporate seven new players into a roster that returned 11 from last year’s district championship team. Imagine how good this team can be when the players all get used to each other. “We’ve been doing pretty well this season, getting to know each other and getting comfortable with each other,” Elstun, a senior center-midfielder said. “It’s definitely a process, but we’re doing well with it.” Junior Baylee Whitley will be in goal for the Tigers, though coach Dean Flexton said he is also hoping to get some playing time for senior McKenna Ville, who is playing on the varsity team for the first time. Giana Gayles will also be a key player for Holy Trinity.
The sophomore has been part of the program for three years, but has missed much of the past two because of back problems. Now that she’s fully fit and back on the field, Flexton said it’s like having a brand new player. Two more key players for the Tigers this season will be senior Victoria Zeger, who plays in the back defensively, and talented seventh grader Kailey Dunn. While the Tigers have plenty of players for defenses to be concerned about this season, no one figures to get more attention from opponents than Morgan, who is already off to a strong start. The junior scored all four goals in the Tigers’ first game against Sebastian River, then added four more in Holy Trinity’s easy victory against Florida Air Academy. Her combination of size, speed and skill is a tough matchup for any opponent. “She’s incredibly quick, for one,” Flexton said when asked what stands out about Morgan. “She’s very technical when she wants to be. … She’s just a very powerful, strong athlete.” Holy Trinity, which plays in the same district with Florida Air, John Carroll (Fort Pierce), Master’s Academy (Vero Beach), Pine

Student computer club may change worlds, including this one Sears met with Dr. Aldo Fabrigas, head of engineering at Florida Institute of Technology, who agreed to write the computer code required to install the game software, and much more. “He also agreed to connect the college with VCS to start a mentor relationship between schools,” Sears said. “He will be teaching computer
coding, programming basics and Java in the intermediate MinecraftEdu club. This is the start of a mentor relationship between schools to define STEM and computer science.” The effort stumbled when it was discovered that the

Most parents are dismayed that their kids want to play video games every available moment. Instead, Susan Sears harnessed her children’s keyboards like workhorses to plow through tough topics like science, math, engineering and technology ― known as STEM. Her children, Slayde and Seville Kerner, started the state’s first after-school, student-run computer club at Viera Charter School, using the super-popular video game Minecraft. Called MinecraftEdu, the game is specifically modified for use in school clubs and classrooms. “I hope this will continue to grow into use in the classrooms, as this is the way kids can learn STEM and really enjoy it,” said Slayde,
an eighth-grader who will hand the reins to his sixthgrader sister Seville upon graduation. The K-8 private charter school specializing in STEM is available to any child. Tuition is paid with public school dollars, but the school is governed by its own board. The launch of the club had its beginnings in gamer legend. Slayde competed at the 2012 Minecon convention in Orlando and won awards on stage from among the 75,000 attendees. Slayde’s win enabled him to meet Minecraft creator Markus Persson, known by his nickname ― all great gamers have one ― Notch. The Swedish gamer god autographed an Xbox 360 game system and gave it to Slayde. He also met with the Mojang team, the Swedish
company that built out Persson’s concept and placed the game at the fingertips of virtually every computerliterate youth in the world since its launch in 2011. The experience gave the teen wings to overcome obstacles to achieve his goals, with his mother’s help.

school’s lab computers could not handle the software. Fabrigas then wrote a proposal to the school board that resulted in the funding of new computers for the club with special video cards required to run the intricate visuals. “We are thankful to him but of course also the school board, staff and principal Dr. Julie Cady,” Sears said, listing each person involved. Minecraft has set the gamer world ablaze because it includes so many childfavorite features also popular with adults. Its creative and building aspects allow players to build entire worlds out of textured cubes, add “skins” to characters, use maps made by other players and ultimately, to create their own games and play with

Unlike many video games, it is equally embraced by both males and females, like Seville. “I love working on the club, making the activities every week. We can create things like building contests and redstone,” she added, referring to the newly developed Minecraft equivalent of electricity. It can be used to create inventions, such as working computers or factories. If it sounds like the club could be the source of child billionaires who have learned to write code and create and popularize new games, or a leaping shift in the way businesses are started and built, it is. “I’d say the sky is the limit, but in Minecraft, the sky is no longer a limit,” said Sears, who encourages her children’s independence and
Local non-profit foundation Miles Freeburg Foundation is hosting Miles for Myles 5K in memory of Myles Freebergl. Myles Freeberg was a scholar athlete and the only male valedictorian in the Class of 2011 at Viera High School. Freeburg was on his way to have his senior picture taken when he was hit by a distracted driver. He died the next day, on July 8, 2010, from injuries sustained in the accident. The funds raised will be used to promote and encourage higher education through internships and scholarships to Brevard County high school students. entrepreneurial spirit and believes in giving them the tools and resources to turn an interest into a passion that becomes a reality. Business and government have increased the focus on STEM education and activities as the potential future savior of U.S. economic leadership. Higher education is already knocking on Slayde’s door as the family considers options for high school and beyond. “One of the school reps was really impressed by a student starting a STEM program in a school, so I think that will make a big difference having that on his resume,” Sears said. “They’re not looking for geniuses. Inside the ropes at VEMA BY BILL HALL
The Viera East Men’s Golf Association (VEMA) has enjoyed a busy and active fall with regular weekly league play and one of VEMA’s many special events, the 2014 Director’s Cup. Competitors who have advanced in the Director’s Cup matches are Peter Maloney and Bob David in Flight A; Raj Patel and Dale Zeigler in Flight B; and Jack McGinn and Tom Campbell in Flight C. All Director’s Cup matches will be completed in early December, and the
playoff matches will be completed by Dec. 18. On Nov. 20, VEMA members participated in the VEMA November Turkey Shoot. This holiday event featured a closest-to-the-pin contest on all four of Viera East Golf Club’s par 3 holes. Competitors whose golf shots on these holes were the closest-to-the-flags received a holiday turkey just in time for Thanksgiving. Wildlife wisdom and habitat habits once had a regular home on the pages of Viera Voice, and starting in January that will again be true. Charlotte Corbeil co-wrote a column with her husband Charlie to accompany his award-winning photos called “Parting Shot.” The column was discontinued and deeply missed after his sudden and unexpected death last fall. “It was a shock and it hit me hard, as it did everyone who loved him. He was so incredibly special,” Charlotte Corbeil said. The return of Corbeil’s writing about wildlife will be welcome to readers, according to Viera Voice publisher Jill Blue-Gaines. “Readers revere local wildlife and love reading about them and their habitats,” Blue-Gaines said. “I am thrilled Charlotte will continue to write about these important creatures and what they add to our lives.” Corbeil’s column will be called Charlotte’s WebSpinning Tales and will focus on the fauna and the flora of the Viera Wetlands and points across Brevard and beyond. Duran Golf Club honors veterans BY GEORGE WHITE
As an avid golfer, retired Air Force Chief Jerry McAnulty honored his fellow veterans on Veterans Day at Duran Golf Club. For the third consecutive year, McAnulty stationed himself at the 11th green right next to the Duran Clubhouse. For that hole, he handled the pin, which has been equipped with a specially-made American flag purchased for the brief ceremony repeated for all golfers. “The flag is displayed on the pin. As the players come up to the green, I make sure that they observe me because I’m in red, white and blue. I want to remove the pin from the cup. Unfortunately, normally when you remove the pin from the ground, you put
it on the ground and you don’t want to do that with an American flag. I take the flag, move back out of the way and stand at parade rest, like we do in the military. I put the flag back in the cup and salute the flag and then I wait for the next group to come up. I do it from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,’’ said McAnulty, 78, who enlisted in 1955. The new Viera tradition came about when the Heritage Isle resident saw a group called Birdies For The Brave do the same thing. “I kind of took the lead from them. Out of respect and honor for the veterans, I thought it would be a great thing to do here at Duran,’’ he said. In addition to paying for the American flag for the event, Duran Golf Club also honors veterans with discounts, including free golf (players

still have to pay the $22 cart fee) and reduced prices at the clubhouse restaurant. “By giving them the discounts on Veterans Day, there’s going to be a lot of veterans here and then there’s just the regulars who play here and a lot of them are veterans,’’ he said. McAnulty said he’s so encouraged by the response that he’s in it for the long haul. “The golfers are 100 percent pleased with the event. They actually seem to be impressed with what’s going on because they’ve never seen it done before. I do it out of respect and honor for veterans, being one myself. I spent 28 years in active duty. I’m just very patriotic and I love to do this. I will do this as long as I’m alive because it’s been so well received,’’ he said. VV

With golf cart power comes great responsibility, experts say BY MIKE GAFFEY
New golf cart guidelines recently approved for Viera are sure to lure more residents to use golf carts to zip around the community. But risks and liability come with the enjoyment of using a golf cart as everyday transportation, according to legal and insurance representatives. The Brevard County Commission adopted new rules for golf cart drivers vOct. 21.
Golf carts can now be driven on sidewalks at least 8 feet wide. They are still banned from major roads, but drivers can use them to cross busy streets at intersections with traffic signals and at designated pedestrian crosswalks. Drivers as young as 14 are permitted to operate them across Viera, which is part of unincorporated Brevard County. “You as the golf cart owner are responsible for any negligence which causes

But there is good news for cart drivers, Adovasio said. Most major insurers offer a recreational vehicle policy, which covers golf cart usage. The average annual cost is about $80, he said. Additional coverage for damage to the cart itself is also available for an additional $75 on average, he
added. For more information on legal or insurance matters related to golf cart use, call Charpentier at 321-3088020 or Adovasio at 321454-4444, or for a link to view the new ordinance in its entirety, go to VieraVoice. com. VV

bodily injury or property damage caused by you or your permissive users while operating your golf cart,” Melbourne attorney Stephen G. Charpentier said. The new rules were approved not long after a woman was killed after driving a golf cart into traffic on Murrell Road in Viera Sept. 30, touching off both criticism but also support for their use on social media. Many golf cart owners are under the impression that they have liability coverage for their cart under their homeowners policy, but that’s not always the case, according to one insurance representative. “There’s no homeowners policy I know of that covers liability if your 14-yearold daughter is driving her girlfriend and they’re going to The Avenue Viera to go to the movies or something and she turns a corner too quick and her girlfriend next to her falls out and breaks her neck,” said Dan Adovasio, who operates a State Farm agency in Viera. “You have a lot of personal liability as the owner of the cart for that accident and you may not have any insurance coverage to defend yourself with or to pay if you are found guilty.” Some smaller insurers often don’t offer coverage, he added. And larger insurers limit liability coverage to cart drivers playing golf or on their way to or from the golf course, he noted. Adovasio said many insurance companies have dropped coverage for damage done by golf carts in order to gain a competitive advantage and reduce the cost of insurance. “It is very important to read your homeowners insurance policy carefully to evaluate what coverage you have, or more importantly, don’t have,” Adovasio said.

When the Viera Lions Club formed 12 years ago as part of the international Lions organization, the plan was to take on roles as advocates and organizers, hold fundraisers and volunteer in many communities. The organization has exceeded that goal and continues to do so. With 53 members, they are one of six Lions Clubs in Brevard County. There are more than one million men and women volunteers who make a difference in their local communities as well as around the world. They are united in helping others and

work together as a group to serve those in need. The Lions are passionate about assisting the blind, the deaf and people who have needs that are not served elsewhere. They offer free diabetes screenings in various locations, noting that diabetes is a leading cause of blindness. By collecting gently used eye glasses and hearing aids, they help those who cannot otherwise afford this equipment. The local Viera Lions Club serves Viera, Suntree and the Baytree areas. On Nov. 1, they held a successful rummage sale to help those in need. Unfortunately, the diabetes screening had to be curtailed because of the extremely windy weather on that date, but with sales of items donated for the rummage sale, money was collected to help with education, diabetes testing equipment, recycling of eye glasses and hearing aids, Florida eye (tissue) banks, Southeastern Guide Dogs and Florida Dog Guides for the Deaf. All monies donated go back into the community and include Christmas toys

donated to various venues. Lions Club sets up drop-off sites for toy donations in places such as the Brevard Sharing Center, Walgreen’s, Kohls, Sam’s Clubs and other businesses. The toys are then wrapped and handed out to needy children. Their latest endeavor is vision screening for preschool aged children. “The Lions motto is ‘We Serve’ which says it all,” said Ed Marrero, president of the Viera chapter. “By helping others in need, we ultimately help ourselves. There are so many different people in crisis, including children and the elderly.” The Lions as a whole are the largest service club in America. In 2013, the club had 1.35 million members in 209 countries who share a core belief: Community is what we make it. The other five Lions Clubs in Brevard are Rockledge, Cocoa Beach, Satellite Beach and two clubs in Palm Bay. The Viera Lions meet at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Holiday Inn Melbourne-Viera Conference Center on Wickham Road at Interstate 95. “A member must be invited to join,” Marrero said. “After attending two meetings or events and expressing a desire to become a Lion, the organization will decide whether or not to invite a candidate. More information on this can be obtained by calling the membership chairman, Larry Jackson.” To find out more, call Jackson at 321-242-1331 or go to Viera Lions Club on Facebook. Student-led flag bill gets second life Support from the community is the needed ingredient for a student-led state legislation campaign to ensure that American flags purchased by local and state governments are made in America from U.S. made materials. This was the call to action given by Viera High School JROTC senior Army instructor Lt. Col. Tim Thomas, retired, at the Nov. 14 Veterans Salute at the King Center that opened the Senior Life Boomer Bash & Senior expo. He hoped to get veterans and active military to back the cause. “We’ll start knocking on doors as it gets closer to the February or March (2015) time frame of the (Florida) legislative session when this is expected to come up for a vote, hopefully get a busload of us to go up to Tallahassee to help our representatives reach out to their peers,”
Thomas said. He oversaw a studentcoordinated Support the American Flag 5K run and rally Oct. 4 at the VHS stadium with guest speakers Sheriff Wayne Ivey and Army Maj. Gen. John Cleland, retired, at which Florida Rep. Ritch Workman pledged to champion the bill. Workman said he will re-file the bill, which did not make it to a vote last year. The campaign was launched last year by students from VHS and Eau Gallie High School students, led by VHS faculty advisor Matt Susin, who has since left to work in the private sector. “When students discovered the government spends $4 million a year on U.S. flags made in China, a Communist nation that detests the very freedom our flag represents, we said this has to stop,” Thomas said. Garden marks victory over abuse for Viera children BY LINDA WIGGINS
Some of the children at the Devereux residential facility in Viera will be living off the land. Call it a health spa, call it a retreat or a camp, the new facility in Titusville is intended as a transition back to the community for adolescents through age 17 who have successfully graduated from more intense treatment at Viera. The facility? The once Brevard County-run foster care group home formerly known as Country Acres. The property will continue to be owned by the county but the grounds and a larger and a smaller building will be operated under contract by Devereux, which provides or coordinates much of the foster care services in the county for Brevard Family Partnership, a nonprofit care management coordinator under contract to the Department of Children and
VIERA VOICE PHOTO
On what was formerly known as Country Acres, Devereux Titusville Campus regional administrator Roy Meeks said Viera-campus children will soon grow and eat their own food from a community garden and follow other healthy pursuits. Families. “We are super excited about this concept to have young people live in healing harmony with nature, growing their own foods and learning how to eat nutritiously and care for their bodies,” said Roy Meeks, regional
administrator over what will now be called the Devereux Titusville Campus. He also oversees the Aurora Group Home for up to 12 girls. A smaller facility on the premises was once geared for independent living for young women aging out of foster care from age 18 to as
old as 21 to 23. It will now house six younger females, some of whom are rescued victims of human trafficking once forced into prostitution. It will continue to be called The Cottage. “This is a new approach. It’s a homey environment, but it’s almost got a camp flavor going for it,” Meeks said. Up to 18 boys will live in what was the main facility traditionally known as Country Acres. Its commercial kitchen can handle a much greater volume of food preparation, but the emphasis is on housing fewer boys, with most of them in a room to themselves rather than multiple individuals per room in bunks. The larger facility will now be known as The Lodge, in keeping with the camping/spa theme. The children will tend a large garden and grow produce to use and trade under the tutelage of a certified Florida Master
Gardener. The nutritionist under contract will then teach them how to get the food from the ground to the table. The children will also have volunteer positions in the community and otherwise interact in ways that will prepare them to be citizens who fit in well for their benefit and others, Meeks said. “We will still teach them to respect rules, but these are children who either were never a behavioral threat or have successfully transitioned through treatment services and are ready to integrate into the community,” Meeks said. The Titusville campus will be restraint-free, meaning staff will not act to restrain youth physically if they act out, as they do on the Viera campus where behavioral and mental health issues can be severe. The children will attend either Jackson Middle or Titusville High schools. The Cottage is ready for use and awaiting approval for a business license, and it is hoped that The Lodge will be in operation by January. “Nature is a soothing agent for youth,” said Meeks, adding that they youngsters will take yoga and other healthy classes at the nearby YMCA. “If this is as effective as we believe it will be, this may mean great advancements in our ability to prepare children to join a forever family of their own, return to their home of origin or start a healthy independent life on their own.” For more information, call 321-474-2089. Holiday brunch in trade for toys is gift of GAAB BY LINDA WIGGINS

In its fourth year, the 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 event is now a mimosa brunch at her CasaBella Clubhouse in Suntree, hosted by her charitable civic association, the Greek-American Association of Brevard (GAAB). Like Hawkins, many of the cultural group’s members are also members at St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church across Wickham Road, the site of popular food-centered festivals with authentic Greek dancing that also attract the public for community benefit. “We can’t not have great food at an event, so you can expect to find delicious brunch versions of some of our popular dishes, like an amazing spinach and feta cheese quiche. Of course, baklava is just as delicious a dessert for lunch as it is for dinner, and we will have the popular Grecian Odyssey dancers perform that everyone loves to see,” Hawkins said. “We tell everyone, brunch is on us, the toys are on you,”

The Greek-American Association of Brevard will trade a Dec. 14 mimosa brunch for new, unwrapped toys and gift cards for children in or at risk of foster care served by Devereux. added Hawkins, a member of the Devereux Brevard Development Leadership Council. According to Devereux development director Patty Hurst, the greatest need for toys this year is for adolescents and teens. “People seem to love to get toys for babies, toddlers and young children,” Hurst said. “But there is a great need among youth, who are at a very vulnerable time in their lives, and it really helps them to know that people from the community care about them.”
New clothing and electronics are popular gifts, but the greatest need is for gift cards to clothing, toy, department and big box stores, Hurst added. In addition to children at the school, the gifts will be distributed to children in or at risk of placement in foster care, which Devereux coordinates. This year, GAAB’s toy brunch is partnering with another cultural communitybenefit powerhouse, the Brevard Indian Medical & Dental Association. BIMBA
everyone, but we don’t want to try Indian food and possibly fail and get someone mad at us,” Hawkins said. “We’ll stick to what we know, and go enjoy their delicious food another day.” The CasaBella clubhouse is at 6015 Anello Dr., off Wickham Road north of Pineda Causeway. The gate to the private community will be open for the event. For more information on GAAB or the toy brunch, go to gaab. us or call 321-622-3141. VV

Silent film draws capacity crowd for new ‘fun fundraiser’ BY LINDA WIGGINS
Talkies may be a thing of the past. Suntree United Methodist Church organist Tom Taylor successfully brought back a silent film with his accompaniment at a Nov. 2 fundraiser. A capacity crowd of about 350 people attended the free event and ponied up donations for new robes for the choral members. The flick was “Safety Last,” a 1923 movie starring the popular Harold Lloyd as an Average Joe who leaves
Kansas to seek his fortune in order to get married and settle down. He sets upon an idea to promote a department store with a stunt that leaves him dangling from a skyscraper clock tower in what is now one of the most iconic scenes in movie history. “Everybody had a great time and really enjoyed it. It was a dream come true for me to do this,” said Taylor, who with his wife Lori moved to the area nine years ago as a senior mechanical designer for Suntree-
based BRPH Architects and Engineers, Inc., adding the job at SUMC shortly after. Taylor, a member of the American Theatre Organ Society, got the bug for silent films in the 1960s as part of an art theater group that played the organ for silent films. He said the unique activity is now a proven hit for a new type of fun

fundraiser and will repeat it in January. Taylor’s event starts off with the audience as part of the show, following an onscreen bouncing ball, singing some of the popular Tin Pan Alley songs of the ’20s, followed by a short break with refreshments. The audio for the movie that follows is an artistic creation as well. While the movies do come with an original score, Taylor refuses
to even listen to it. Instead, he writes his own music, cutting in and out to evoke the emotion of the story on the screen he has viewed dozens of times. The church is a perfect setting for the event, with its commercial kitchen for mass meal preparation a plus for potential dinner theater, and frequent use by groups as a community center due to its crowd capacity and amenities, Taylor said. is, however, one drawback, he added. “You have to choose your films carefully,” Taylor said. “While we may think of them as the good ole days, and in many ways a more conservative time, the silent films dealt with some surprisingly dark and graphic themes. Even if they cut away at the last minute, your imagination filled in the blanks.” For more information on upcoming silent movie shows, call the church at 321-255-2585. VV

Lexus dealership teams with Operation Kidsafe to open free child safety station BY MIKE GAFFEY
Lexus of Melbourne in Viera has partnered with Operation Kidsafe International to host Florida’s first free child safety fingerprinting station at the dealership for the next year. Families can bring their children, grandchildren and special needs adults to the dealership at 6927 Bromley Drive during operating hours and use Operation Kidsafe equipment at no charge. In less than a minute, the equipment captures a child’s photo and fingerprints, using a digital video capture device and specialized software. Parents receive an 8 ½-by-11 inch printout of the assembled data that they can provide to law enforcement during a family emergency, along with tips for establishing a family safety action plan. “The core principles of what we do are that it has to be free and it has to be private for families,” Operation Kidsafe founder Mark J. Bott said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov. 19 at the dealership. Based in Springfield, Ill., the program has safeguarded
more than 1 million children in 13 years, he said. More than 2,000 children are reported missing every day in North America, said Bott, who founded the organization after a family friend’s daughter went missing. The Viera station is the

But we would love to have more in Florida.” T.R. Page, owner and general manager of Lexus of Melbourne, said he became interested in the program after contacting Bott and talking to a Lexus dealer in Kansas City who had established a station. “We thought it was the perfect fit for our community,” Page said. “We’re the first one in the state of Florida. We like to be pioneers when we do things.” Lexus employees are trained how to operate the equipment, Page said. “We can grab somebody who’s available, sit the kids down, give the printout to the parents and they can be on their way,” he said. Lexus probably will continue the program after the first year, Page said. “We’ll see how it goes and how the community feels about it,” he said. One of the first to use the equipment was Lisa Rose of Suntree, who obtained a photo and fingerprints of her daughter, Makena. “I was just trying to use every tool that I can to keep her safe,” Rose said. For more information, call Lexus of Melbourne at 321-473-7876 or go to Operationkidsafe.org. VV Child fingerprinting is available from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Families will get to spend a free day of fun at Harmony Farms Blizzard at the Barn Sunday, Dec. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. The Viera nonprofit provides equine-assisted therapy to children and adults with special needs,
including injured combat veterans. New this year is a holiday wreath sale, including an equine-themed version built around a majestic horse’s head. The holiday open house will feature a petting zoo, face painting, pony rides,
treats to feed horses and photo opportunities with costumed mini-equines and Santa himself. Food and fun vendors will fill out the day’s offerings. “It’s a rare treat to find a free day on the farm for the family to enjoy,” said Pam Rogan, founder and executive

barn for horses that once worked the cattle ranch of A. Duda & Sons, a portion of which is now the town of Viera. Cattle operations are now limited to a large agricultural preserve west of the town, which converts to a watershed preserve that runs to the St. Johns River. The Duda family had been donating the use of the barn and land to Harmony Farms in what is now a residential area, but recently donated land for a permanent facility south of the west end of Wickham Road. The area will be a lightly developed buffer between residential development and the agricultural preserve. Rogan will give an update on relocation plans at the Blizzard. Funds will be raised at the event toward construction of a combination barn and operations facility on the new property. about safe processes — it is safe until it isn’t. We have experienced oil spills enough times to know that things can go wrong and when they do, some of the effects can be very hard to recover from, if at all. So, even though the New York Times reports that “groups on all sides — industry, environmentalists and the governor of Virginia — claimed victory in the compromise management plan,” it concerns me as a citizen that some fracking was approved. Like all the other results I listed above, this one also defines us and our values. If some fracking is OK now, what guarantees that some more will not be OK in the near future? Is this the kind of thing we want for our nation moving forward? Every year at the end of the year we look back, evaluate the good, the bad, and the ugly and ponder over accomplishments, challenges and failures of the year that is almost at the end. It is a moment of reflection when we get to the bottom of what really matters and have a chance to adjust our focus to set the tone for the new year. Looking back, we have made good decisions. I just hope we can be consistent moving forward. Melbourne’s Gymboree plans ‘Frozen’ themed party in December
1000 SF & 1500 SF (END CAP) ATTORNEY ● INSURANCE AGENT ● HAIR SALON BARBER SHOP ● DELI / SANDWICH / COFFEE SHOP BAKERY ● CARD/GIFT SHOP ● BOUTIQUE / BRIDAL
When Jill Youngkin and Cristina Giammarinaro opened the Melbourne area Gymboree Play and Music on Wickham Road in 2006, they didn’t realize how quickly their business would grow. But grow it did. Now the play and learn gym is a happy, busy place filled with kids and their parents and/or grandparents almost every day. Recently remodeled to corporation specs, Gymboree is a colorful, fun place for kids from newborn to 5 years old. For small babies, music is important as is learning eye coordination, color recognition and verbal acuity. The older children have plenty to keep them busy along with dedicated teachers who help them with arts and crafts and musical knowledge. “We try to make our schedule as easy as possible for the moms,” Youngkin said. “After the age of 3, the children can participate on their own without a parent or grandparent being present.” For the first time, Gymboree is sponsoring a winter break play pass from Christmas to New Year’s Day. Children do not have to be enrolled at Gymboree to participate. Parents or grandparents must accompany the child, however, and there is a one-time fee of $20 per child. Also, a winter party will be held from Dec. 20 to 22, open to all children up to age 5. The theme this year is “Frozen” and will include party cookies, drinks and arts and crafts. Rumor has it that Elsa of “Frozen” will be visiting Gymboree during that time. Gymboree is located at 3688 Wickham Rd., Suite A, in Melbourne in the Bay Meadows Shopping Center just south of Post Road and behind The Running Zone. For more information, call 321-259-5669. VV

BUSINESS
A business will not thrive without a well-appointed vision to take shape into, Pizza Gallery & Grill owner Chris Conneen told members of Viera Means Business at the Nov. 13 breakfast networking meeting hosted at the popular restaurant at The Avenue Viera. “You have to envision it in your mind so vividly you can see the colors and feel the feelings your success will create, and set goals for where you will be in three years, five years, and make an action plan of what you will do now and next week and so on in order for you to get there.” VMB is a support network provided by Viera Voice to help current and potential advertisers thrive. It meets at 7:55 a.m. the second Thursday of each month at member business locations. For an invitation, email RSVP@ vieravoice.com or call Alita Rossiter, Kimberly Schaefer 321-242-1235. VV
