Katy Rewis, of Melbourne, learned how scary hospitals can be in 2009 when her 5-year-old cousin had to be treated in Orlando after accidentally cutting her head while swimming. But, rather than just complaining about the situation, she decided to do something about it for other children. Rewis, an 11th grader at Cocoa Beach Jr.-Sr. High School, planned and painted murals at Viera Hospital as Presort Std U.S. Postage PAID Orlando, FL Permit No. 1979
part of her quest for Girl Scouting’s Gold Award, an honor similar to becoming an Eagle Scout for Boy Scouts. Gathering donated materials and using her own sketches, Rewis, of Troop 1419, spent two full days, in early January, creating the first animalthemed mural in an examination room. Her troop had been raising money for a project like this, so she had a $200 budget, but the project cost about $300 and additional funds were needed. Home Depot also donated some

She said she plans a similar mural in another examination room, this one with an underwater theme. “I did a smaller mural in my bathroom as practice so I sort of knew what it was going to be like. A lot of people stopped by while we were working on and said that they liked the way it was looking,’’ she said. Starting at about 6 a.m., the first painting day was a full 14 hours,

Diversity got its beginnings in 1940s Alabama By MARTHA MASIELLO
Born in New York and raised in Ohio, the African-American student had achieved his childhood dream. He was about to learn to fly airplanes. The young white Army Air Corps instructor from California received an assignment to instruct a group of new cadets on flying and fighter pilot tactics. Together, they would cross the lines of diversity and become a component of history in the making. In the early 1940s, civil rights organizations and the black press exerted pressure that ultimately resulted in the formation of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first AfricanAmerican military aviators in
the US Armed Forces. They served during World War II in the Army Air Corps, all the while being subjected to daily racial discrimination. Lt. Col. Hiram Mann (USAF Ret.) flew 48 missions with the 332nd Fighter Group, the 302nd and 100th Fighter Squadrons during World War II. He remained in the Air Force for more than 20 years. “I wrote letters to the War Department about getting into a flying training program for my country, and received responses saying there were no provisions for Negroes to fly in any branch of the military. The attitude then was that we would never fly. They did not want us to fly. We were fighting to free others from oppression in Europe, yet we

In 1944, he was assigned to Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama as an instructor pilot. His lengthy career included service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and included flying P-51s, B-26s and B-47s. He also instructed Chinese and Turkish students at Randolph Field in San Antonio, Texas. “Most of the Tuskegee cadets were from the North and mid-west, because of the educational requirements for their pilot training at that time,” Hughes said. “The War Department didn’t think the trainees would be qualified. These guys went through school against all odds and made enormous contributions to the country and the war effort. This was a huge stepping stone to improving race relations. I was shocked and upset that I was not permitted to live on the Tuskegee base, and was housed elsewhere, and also at the inhumane treatment afforded folks during that period. Hiram was one of my better students.” Hughes’ career included assignments to Hawaii, Japan and Korea. Original Tuskegee airmen, known as DOTAs (documented original Tuskegee Airman) have received Congressional Medals of Honor. A DOTA is anyone — man or woman, military or civilian, black or white —– who served at Tuskegee Army Air Field or in any of the programs stemming from the Tuskegee Experience between the years 1941 and 1949. L to R: Michael Hennessey, Kara Lord and Ann McCandless attend the January 2011 meeting of the Brevard Association of Human Services, where McCandless received the Rainbow Award for her work with the Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children. By MARY BROTHERTON
Ann McCandless has always been involved in the community and a year ago, she added working at the Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children to her many volunteer activities. Kara Lord, volunteer coordinator at the Center said, “Ann’s commitment and dedication are truly extraordinary. She is my go-to-girl. I honestly can’t imagine how this center would run its daily operations without her help. Because she believes in the Center for Mothers with Children so strongly, McCandless gave up other

volunteer positions to be readily available. “I mostly drive, McCandless said. Lord praised McCandless, who prefers to remain behind the scenes. “For a year, now, she has made countless trips, using her own vehicle and paying for her own fuel, to transport moms to and from school, various doctors’ appointments, church and other activities. McCandless admitted she put more than 4,300 miles on her car, working 15 to 20 hours each week, to help women who need assistance with paperwork, transportation and even English.
“But it’s not about me or what I can do, McCandless said, “I don’t do enough. Without the dedication of people like Lila Buescher and Allison Hood, the Center would not be able to do what it does. Of course, we’d all be lost without Kara. Buescher is the president and CEO of Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children. Hood is the center’s program director. Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children is a safe place where mothers and their children who are experiencing crisis may rebuild their lives with concrete plans to help them achieve independent living. The center offers help and guidance – and with volunteers like McCandless – quite often, it offers hope. Bats are beneficial across Brevard, bringing down big numbers of pesky mosquitoes better than any manmade approach. You’re likely a fan, since they’re no harm to humans, unless a colony decides to make their home in yours. “We just spent $2,000 getting them out of our roof for the second time in five years, said Camden Gooch of Suntree. “I think they’re great. We have never even seen a mosquito near our house. But we just wish they would get out of our house and stay out. Suntree and Viera share two characteristics that make bats choose this area more than any other: bodies of water and golf courses. The upside of bats is no mosquitoes in an area that would otherwise be plagued with them. The downside when a resident is an unintentional landlord is constant high-pitched squeaks and a pungent odor from dung that is so strong it gets its own word: guano. The flying mammals are so good at mosquito control that they are protected by law from being removed during their maternity season, April 15 through August 15. When they are removed, screens are placed over cracks that develop between roof shingles or tiles that allow them to fly out but not return. Bat houses help, some. “They are very territorial. They love going back to the place they were born or once lived, and only if they are prevented from going back or going to any other nearby houses in their territory will they call their new place home, said David Diaz of American Bat Removal. While it may seem inhumane to expect bats to live in a tiny wood box atop a pole exposed to the Florida sun, that’s just the way they like it. Roost temperatures of 100 to 120 degrees help their babies mature faster, according to Diaz. For more information, contact Diaz at 877-874-7759 or visit americanbat.com. VV

Did you know when you first met Oka Nikolov, that he had the potential to be a great player? He was drawing from another top youth club, Darmstadt 98, to Eintracht. He did not really have any serious goalkeeper training until he trained with me. As I talked to him, this past November, we joked that he was very sour in the first two months. The coach who drew him said, “This guy has the potential to be a big one because he has no nerves.” That means he stays always cool and never gets nervous. His thoughts It was just like a dream come true in the beginning, because I come from a small village from the countryside, and then to be with one of the famous bundesliga (football/soccer) clubs. I was very proud to be a part of the youth coaching staff.
What is one of your fondest memories of working with the young players here in Viera? I had the opportunity to train the best goalies in Brevard like Megan Dorosey (UNF) or Sean Double from Cocoa. He played as the only player from Brevard in a US academy team. I taught them my way to be a successful goalkeeper. Which would challenge you more, a single child with severe learning disabilities or a dozen talented players with bad attitudes? Definitely, the bad attitudes. What historical event can you vividly remember?
As the wall came down in Berlin. I wasn’t there, but I remember it well.
During the World Cup, do you always have a favorite team? Germany, of course.

Finding a manager
Association Living By Frank Kneiser CMCA, AMS, PCAM
When you are looking for a new or replacement community association manager, these are some ideas that may help you find the right person. Associations will often appoint a committee to screen the total
candidate pool and make a recommendation to the Board. Credentials and background are critical. If your association utilizes a management company, it is important that you choose the manager and not the company. That should be part of your contract with the management company. The same criteria would apply whether you hire your manager directly or you have a management company employee. In the State of Florida, a community association manager must be licensed. Florida was the first state in the country to require this. Licensure requires a pre-license education course, criminal background check, and finger printing, followed by a competency
exam. Once licensed, a manager is required to take continuing education classes to maintain the license in good standing. This process assures your association of a manager with at least a basic knowledge of the profession. Subsequently, there are advanced educational opportunities for managers. Some associations require their managers take these courses and some managers take the initiative on their own. The candidate’s resume should show a progressive history of advancement and responsibility. Any gaps of unemployment must be satisfactorily explained and confirmed. Usually references are required. However, most people only provide references they
know will produce positive results. I recommend using sunbiz.org to find directors and officers of former employers. Then contact these people directly. A candidate who is involved in the community through service clubs and volunteer organizations will be an added benefit. Formal education is often a consideration while life experience is frequently as valuable. The interview may be the most important part of the process. Positive chemistry should be established soon after the interview begins. Look for a professional, friendly demeanor because this person will be the face of your association to your owners, vendors and community. Your applicant
should have a positive attitude while never making negative comments. This person should be a proactive self-starter, as they will be working without direct supervision most of the time. A demonstration of planning and organization is also vital. It is a good sign when the contender actually asks for the job. It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@ suntreeflorida.com. Suntree dentist serves far and near By LINDA WIGGINS
Suntree dentist Michael Fowler put his money where others’ mouths were this past summer, and now he and his fellow dentists are doing the same locally. During the month of February, Children’s Dental Health Month, Give Kids a Smile will provide dental services to lowincome children who do not qualify for Medicaid. “Treating children in need is very rewarding, Fowler said. “We all loved it and were richly rewarded with satisfaction for having brightened the futures of these indigent children. We hope to encourage others to do great things to with their vacations. But we also feel it’s important to serve in our own backyards, too. Fowler’s love for rural Peruvian people was sparked as a missionary 20 years ago. It was natural that he would return to lead a team to meet their basic physical needs as well: healthy teeth to last a lifetime. dental care, the team taught children and families good dental hygiene. The trip was supported by volunteers and donors from Fowler’s Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Viera, and the various churches of staff members, including a network of 50 Baptist churches. The trip was not all work and no play. Fowler and others brought their families and visited the famed Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. The school is located in Pisac, near Cusco, the oldest city in South America, allowing additional rich historic experience and sweeping vistas. VV

Moore, a 1980s graduate of the Brevard County School System, went on to attend his undergraduate years at Morehouse College, where Martin Luther King, Jr. graduated. It set a

So as the community comes together this month to honor important AfricanAmerican leaders, Moore hopes it can be a gentle reminder of what has been seen and what can be achieved. “You need to figure out what the needs of today are to exist and clearly if you look in African-American history, different leaders have come along in different times to provide different things and I think if you take a closer look to examine the present day situations and information, you can figure out the best way to be of service. Brevard is the most historical county in Florida By Ellen Commons-Harrell
Did you know that Florida’s Brevard County has the greatest number of historical sites in the state? There are currently 43 marked historical sites. Roz Foster, founder and president of the North Brevard Heritage Foundation, Inc., said, “From Highway 1, take Pine, Palm and Julia streets to view one of the most historical collection of landmarks in Titusville.” These include the 1891 Prichard House, the first clerk of the court building, the 1912 Historic Courthouse, Brevard Abstract and Title and Insurance Company, the 1923 FEC Railroad Station, the Hill Grocery, the Palm
Apartment Building, Emma Parrish Theater and the 1924 building which housed three businesses and is now About An Inch Beauty Salon. “If you go north on Broad Street, you will find historical sites dating back to 1885, when the railroad came in on Broad Street and led to the freight dock on the river. In addition to all of the city’s history, many sites date back to when the Ais Indians lived here,” Foster said. Joe Morgan, former mayor of Cocoa Beach and currently chairman of the Brevard County Historical Commission said, “My grand nieces and nephews are sixth-generation Brevard County residents from their great-grandfather Daniel Scobie, the lighthouse keeper in 1846. He left the
lighthouse job because of the Seminole Indians.” The Brevard County Historical Commission was created in 1999 to preserve the county’s historical landmarks and sites. It preserves oral histories of local communities. The commission is getting ready to move to a new location at the Brevard County main library located in Cocoa in time for an important historic milestone. “We are really excited about the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the founding of Florida by Juan Ponce de Leon,” Morgan said. For more information, call the Brevard County Historical Commission at 321-433-4415. VV

A crew from the CBS News program “60 Minutes” interviews STN members David Hosley and David Miller on Jan. 20, 2012.
Displaced space workers unify to gain clout By Linda Wiggins
Suntree resident Glenn Andersen may be out of a job, but he’s not without work. He is one of many displaced space workers in the Viera/Suntree area and across the county who have huddled together to weather the void created by the end of the shuttle program and the cancellation of the Constellation program. The television show, 60 Minutesm has come calling, the latest in a line of suitors courting Andersen’s new Spacecoast Technical Network (STN), which meets each Friday morning at 8 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Titusville for a $4 catered breakfast. Networking and information give members further reason to get out of bed and hit the bricks to find a new job, take training to bring their
skills up to date for today’s job market or one day bring a new product or service to market as an entrepreneur. “You are an intellectual brain trust. The elite-of-theelite workforce,” Andersen told his fellow members at a January meeting. “You are the product that will attract businesses to relocate here and to form here.” The CBS News program flew into Brevard Jan. 20 to film a segment on what the idling of the U.S. space program means locally, and to the country and to the world. The 17-minute segment was set to air at the end of January or beginning of February, timed to coincide with the Florida primaries. Anchor for the segment is Scott Pelley. The national exposure is vital, according to one STN member.

“That’s where we get the money to do this work on the Space Coast, from all the other people in the country in the form of their taxes. I think it’s important to these people and they’d want it to continue,” said Gerry Pless, an environmental specialist at Kennedy Space Center who was laid off a year ago. The group voted last month to form a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation and named Andersen and two others to the governing board, the minimum number required to submit an application to the Internal Revenue Service. Andersen is slated to become STN’s executive director when sufficient funds are generated. Doty takes over as Viera baseball coach By Carl Kotala
Bob Doty’s philosophy is pretty straight forward. “The game starts on mound, and finishes on the mound,” Viera High School’s new head baseball coach said. “It’s all about pitching. It’s all about defense. If you can do those things, and you can scratch and claw enough runs, you’re going to win.” Viera, which went 14-9 last year, will be competing in Class 7A, District 3 this season against New Smyrna
Beach and University (Orange City). Armed with some quality returners, four transfers and several talented, young players, Viera should be solid in the areas Doty stresses – pitching and defense. Dave McKay is back as the team’s No. 1 pitcher with transfer Grant Willcoxon likely to serve as the team’s No. 2. Senior lefty Jacob Young will also strengthen the pitching staff, as will senior Kenton Hering and Connor Hermida, who will also see time at

third base. Marty Martinez is back and will play at either second or short, while Matt Cowan should provide some spark in right field. When he’s not pitching, Hering will be at third or in the outfield, while McKay will play first base. The Hawks should get some help from transfers Reid Neal (shortstop), Brandon Goff (Infield) and Adam Rosenfield (catcher). The Hawks are also high on Connor Prater (OF), Kyle Post (INF/OF), Kyle Hintze (OF) and sophomores Billy Lamm (catcher) and Kevin Kostyk (second base). Doty, who was an assistant coach for the Hawks for three seasons, believes it’s going to take a lot of hard work from both the players and the coaches for the Hawks to better their district runner-up status the past two seasons. However,
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Viera High baseball players (from l-r) Kenton Hering, Matt Cowan and Dave McKay will play key roles for the Hawks this season as they compete in a new district. the Hawks have the pieces in place to do just that. “We’ve gotten better every year I’ve been here,” Doty said. “Now, we’re knocking on the door.” VV
Sports Shorts Boys Basketball With a 3-0 district record heading into the final game, all signs point to Viera High School hosting its district championship game on Feb. 11 against University (Orange City) or New Smyrna Beach. That would also mean Viera would qualify for the Class 7A regional playoffs. The Hawks recently beat Satellite 75-43 on the road. Keith Neterer had 15 points in that game, while Chris Anderson and Erick Dejesus each had 13 and Andrew Hollowell added 12. Girls Basketball Led by their core group, which includes Maggie Davis, Dee Anderson,
Rolanda Hayes, Mariah Deckard, Kat Muller, Kelsey Dolan and Kelsey Muller, the Hawks have rolled through the regular season and are set to host the district championship game on Feb. 4. One of Viera’s wins came against Riverview, which was ranked No. 1 in at least one 7A poll at the time. The Hawks’ fast-paced style will be tough for opponents to match up with.
Boys Soccer With one regular season game to go, the Hawks had an 8-7-1 record, and a date with Melbourne in the first round of the district tournament. Heading into that final regular-season game, Viera had gone 3-1 the previous week, including an 8-0 win against Bayside and a 7-1 victory against Cocoa. Senior Joey Heiselman had two hat tricks and scored continued on 17

Offseason program should pay off for Viera wrestlers By Carl Kotala
Viera High wrestling coach Jim Gentile can’t say enough about the Hawks’ offseason workout program and how it helps his guys get ready for the season. “That offseason program that Coach (Greg) Rennie runs, that’s why we’re successful to be honest with you,” Gentile said. The benefits of that offseason work will start paying off soon as the Hawks try to overtake Palm Bay as the top wrestling program in the county. Viera may have lost several key wrestlers from last season, including state champion Ty Cartmell,
but with 13 returning lettermen, that doesn’t mean they’re lacking for talent. “We reloaded,” Gentile said. “Like I said, that offseason program helped. We have a solid lineup with juniors and seniors and we have some younger guys coming up that will really help us, too.” Leading the way for Viera will be a quartet of team captains that includes seniors Kole Kimberly (195 pounds) and Dalton Rennie (145, 152 or 160) and juniors Hunter Waite (132) and Josh Amos (126). Waite finished sixth in the state last year at 125 pounds, while Amos is coming off an injury that forced him to miss last season.
Other key wrestlers include Cody Canada at 113 pounds (regional qualifier last year), junior Reuben Darr at 120 (injured last year) and the Hughes twins — Terrence and Terrell. One of the juniors will wrestle 182, while the other will wrestle at 220. Junior Blake Mahl or Tom Fish will likely wrestle at 170, while Jonathan Kenney — sixth in the state last year at 152 — will likely go at 160. The Hawks have a few holes to fill in a couple of weight classes — which have changed for this season — but otherwise, Viera seems to be ready to contend for the Cape Coast Conference title again this season. Sports Shorts eight goals in those four games. The Hawks also got standout play from goalkeeper, Kevin Montes.
Girls Soccer The Hawks finished the regular season 15-1-2 and were likely to face topseeded Melbourne in the district championship game. The Hawks had four players tear ACLs — Hope Leonard,
continued from 16 Jackie Stengel, Taylor Cahoon and Hailey Sebree — and called up three JV players — Summer Conneen (GK), Allison Summers and Kelsey Keesecker. Mariah Lewis’ 16 goals led the Hawks while Maddy Nagy had 10. Joy Wilkinson had 12 assists and goalkeeper Samantha Lewin made 50 saves. VV
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
The Viera High softball team, led by (l-r top) Shay Richardson, Mary Dawson (l-r bottom) Lindsey Bishop and Ana Breeden could surprise people who think they aren’t as strong as last season. By Carl Kotala
While it’s true the Viera High School softball team lost several key players from last year’s team that made it to the regional finals for the second year in a row, those who think the Hawks will take a step back this season could be in for a surprise. “They’re going to be younger, but I think we’ve got the potential to be pretty strong,” Hawks softball coach Dale Pierce said. “All of our pitchers are returning. To be honest, I think we’re going to surprise some people. I think with what we’ve got coming, we honestly can be better this year than what we were last year.”

Returners Ana Breeden and Kate Callinan, along with freshman Sarah Seibert, headline the pitching staff, which should be strong. Other key returners include senior shortstop Shay Richardson, first baseman Lindsey Bishop and outfielder Lauren Palombi. Having a healthy Mary Dawson back at second base will be a big boost, as will the addition of sophomore Dee Anderson once basketball season is over. Replacing catcher Alex Breeden will be one of Viera’s biggest tasks this season. That job is likely to go to one of two freshmen – Nicky Abato or Ashley Dehn. “We all work well
together,” Ana Breeden said. “We all have a common goal. We know what we want to achieve.” Viera’s returners, especially Breeden and Callinan, who stepped in last year when top pitcher Kinsey Simmons was injured, should benefit from last year’s playoff run. “We just need to play as a team, become a family and have fun,” Richardson said. “No stress. No fighting. Have fun and make a difference.” Though the Hawks will move into Class 7A this season, the goal still hasn’t changed. “We want to make it to the Final Four this year,” Bishop said.VV

Quest Elementary School in Melbourne recently held a unique reading contest for its first and second grade classes. Over the holidays, the children were assigned to read the book, Ugly Pie, by Lisa Wheeler and Heather Soloman. Suntree Principal Mecheall Giombetti explained that the concept of the individual learning areas positioned throughout the school grounds allowed parents and students the opportunity to learn together in an educational arena that would inspire them to realize that education can be an entertaining experience. Students and their parents went from one station to another taking part in various experiments, including weights and measures, magnetic forces, sequencing exercises, tornado formation and gravity exercises. There was also an area where they could observe various animals and plants. STEM night event is supported by the school advisory council and the Parent Teacher Organization. According to Giombetti, Suntree Elementary has a high level of parent-and-child interaction, which helped to make this event a huge success. For more information, call 321-242-6480. VV

Xtreme Hobbies is ‘one-stop shop’ By Denny Meneghelli
Xtreme Hobbies owner James Aulicino describes his business as a “One-stop hobby shop” that boasts a full-time mechanic and a 24-hour turnaround on most repairs. The shop sells and services remote control cars, trucks and boats as well as ARF (Almost Ready to Fly – no motor) and RTF (Ready to Fly — charge and fly) planes and helicopters. Model trains, plastic models, science fair project kits and dollhouse kits are also available at Xtreme Hobbies. In addition, Aulicino keeps his shelves stocked with parts for everything he sells and will order parts as needed for his customers. According to Aulicino, “People of all ages come to race, from beginners on up, with the veterans helping the newcomers.” Aulicino moved to Viera about 11 years ago and has literally helped to build the community, most recently working on the construction of the new firehouse. With the opening of his hobby shop this past November, Aulicino is now building community spirit: “Getting the neighborhood kids involved keeps them out of trouble,” he said. Xtreme Hobbies is also quickly becoming a sort of local “community center” with retirees from the Indian River Colony Club stopping by

There are no bright lights or harsh whites. “You walk in, it’s warm and inviting. Warm colors and soft lights, like a home. You don’t come in just because you want a color and cut. You need to be refreshed, revitalized,” said Cally, adding of her clients with children, “You walk in frazzled and walk out a fresh mommy. We want you to feel comfortable, like you are home,” Cally said. The business is named for the Italian word for sisters, sorelli. “We’re Italian, and we are sisters. But it goes beyond that to the feeling of sisterhood among the staff, and extends to our clients. You don’t have to be Italian to belong, though, or even female. We have lots of male clients,” Cally said. For more information, call 321-253-0030, or go to sorellihairstudio.com. VV

Coming soon: Chase Bank in Viera
50OFF
$ VIERA VOICE Ellen Commons-Harrell
Elaine Meister stands where the drive-thru will be at the new Chase Bank that is going up on the corner of Viera Blvd. and Stadium Pkwy. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. By Ellen Commons-Harrell
Elaine Meister has been named as branch manager for the new Chase Bank that is going up at the corner of Viera Boulevard and Stadium Parkway. She began her banking career 14 years ago in Long Island, N.Y., where she was born and raised. She was chosen for the job because she has lived in Brevard County and has worked for the bank for 11 years throughout its acquisitions. Meister said she enjoys her job because she loves working with people, helping the community, and providing an excellent customer service experience. Chase Bank officials said they are excited about being part of the Viera business community because
the company is a very strong financial institution with a hometown banking feel. Chase has more than 15,000 employees and 454 different locations in Florida. In 2011, the corporation invested $100 million to add 37 different branches to better serve customers across the state. Chase plans to add 375 more branches in
Florida by 2015. The result will be more jobs for venders, construction workers to build the facilities, and of course, branch employees. In addition, Chase officials claim to be the number-one provider for small business administration loans to help small businesses expand and create jobs. The firm’s military banking program has
created products for veterans and service members with enhanced features and added savings. Chase has committed to hiring as many as 100,000 military veterans by the year 2020 and has already hired more than 2,000. As far as creating strong and vibrant neighborhoods, Chase Bank has donated more than $150 million to non profit
organizations and will be hiring personal bankers, a full-time loan officer and financial advisor at the new Viera Branch. Its soft opening is scheduled for Feb. 28, with its official grand opening event planned for March 10. For more information, call Elaine Meister at 877-4470866. VV

Viera painter revives encaustic painting style By George White
Judy Edwards of Viera always wanted to be an artist, starting first as a painter of realism, including a 1997 trip around the world to practice en plein air, a French expression meaning “in the open air,” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. Her artistic passion is heading in another unique direction now with forms of encaustic painting, a process using hot wax. “I came down to Florida 10 years ago and originally looked into doing wax emulsion painting but I found out nobody does it anymore. I went to the Ringling School (in Sarasota)
to learn about encaustic painting and I’ve been doing it ever since. I just love the colors and the texture,” Edwards said. Encaustic (hot wax) painting is a medium introduced by the ancient Greeks and often used by contemporary masters. A permanent medium, the technique can result in luminous painting effects. One technique involves spreading and manipulating wax colors on a hot metal plate and then pressing paper on it for a oneof-a kind monoprint or monotype. Other works involve manipulation of hot wax colors on canvas using tools designed for pottery. Edwards has been part of

Question of the Month:
If everyone lived as you do, would the world be a better place?
Rachel Barnard Yes. I try to live within my means--The Golden Rule still applies: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery will host the Year of the Dragon exhibit beginning Feb.1. The Dragon is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar, and the only animal that is legendary. This will be a member show with invited guests and lots of surprises, and artists are of course creative with their intrepretations…dragon-dragonfly-snapdragon-dragonetdragonhead. Q&A By Grace Vista, Realtor, MBA, SFR
Q.
Q: I’m planning a move in the next few months. Would you recommend I remove all my furniture first, or put my house on the market with the furniture in it?
A.
This is a good question I am asked a lot! The key is to assess your space, your furniture and décor. Does your house show well with your belongings in it? Does it look spacious and inviting, or cluttered and mismatched? I know it’s hard to analyze your own home objectively and that’s where I could help. Often, a home shows better with furniture in it, as a room can actually look smaller without furniture. Each home is unique and so it would depend on the size of your rooms, the amount and type of furnishings, and what condition you can keep it during the showing and marketing process.

Now that it’s a new year, is it better to place our Viera home for sale now or wait until school ends? It’s a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home which is about 1800 sq. feet inside.

Q.
We are considering buying a home in a 55+ community in Viera. Is there a big selection right now of single family homes for sale in these communities?
A.
There are three 55+ communities in the Viera area. All are within a short drive from each other. Heritage Isle, for example, is a 55+community close to the Viera Hospital. As of January 10th, 2012, there were 29 single family homes for sale there posted on the Multiple List Service (MLS), priced from $153,000 to $459,900, and ranging in size from 1655 sq. ft “under air”, to 3491 sq. ft. I would say this is a great selection to choose from, plus there are new homes under construction there too. You can contact me and I can provide more details on the home options, prices, and fees in our local 55+ communities.

We don’t have a lot of re-sale home inventory in Viera right now, so it’s a great time to put your house on the market – as long as it’s promoted effectively and priced correctly. Because of your home’s size, it could attract a range of home buyers, including individuals or couples without school age children, who move at any time. If you had a large 4 to 6 bedroom home, on the other hand, your potential buyers may be more families who prefer to move when their children are out of school.

Dan Adovasio moved from Daytona in 1988 to set up his own business in Viera. He chose State Farm because he feels the company’s ethics reflect his own. His father was a business owner and Adovasio said that he knew as a youngster he wanted to own his own business, too. Fulfilling childhood dreams seems to be a trend in the Adovasio family. His youngest daughter works for State Farm and is a photographer in Fort Lauderdale. Her sister she said that she wanted to be behind the scenes in the music business and now lives in Venice Beach, Calif., as the business manager for singers, songwriters and record producers.

Why are you a regular sponsor
for Brevard Zoo and Devereux? I toured Devereux and admire the work they do there. The kids that are there are so severely traumatized and I think it’s just amazing that the people who work there are able to reach them. I just wanted to be a part of it. I recommend the tour for anyone who wants to know more about the residential facility and the work they do there. As for the zoo, if we don’t sponsor it and offer our support, it would not exist. Feeding all those animals is expensive. What do you do for fun?
Cars. I just enjoy them. The Corvette club I started on the Internet in 1997 is now one of the largest. Are you afraid of anything? My fear is that people, society as a whole, are more selfish, less caring. A society is judged by how

In your industry, what would
your peers vote you most likely to do? I would be voted the one who enjoys their job the most, to have the most fun on the job. If money were no object, what
would you be doing right now? I’d have a big boat. Truthfully, I’d like to live the rest of my life just as I am right now. The key to real happiness is to be content with who you are and what you have. What is your guilty pleasure?
Red licorice strings and Swedish Fish.
Do you have a business tip you’d like to share? Even though I am in business to make money for myself, I believe you have to think that you are in business to provide a living for your employees and then you will get better employees. They are not like pieces of equipment to be used to make money and then tossed away. Treat them like family and know you are providing for their income, for their well-being and lifestyle. VV

Osprey
Pandion haliaetus The osprey is a raptor, one of the largest of its kind in North America. This bird of prey is a diurnal (active in daylight) species. Occasionally, it is identified as the sea hawk, fish hawk or fish eagle. Unusually widespread, it is found in every continent except Antarctica. Along with the bald eagle, the osprey’s numbers declined significantly after 1947 from DDT poisoning. Population recovered when the pesticide was banned in the 1970s. This raptor’s diet is essentially 99% live fish. When it locates prey, it hovers overhead before plunging feet first, capturing the fish with its long curved talons and its reversible toes – four on each foot. It can grasp with three toes forward and one toe backward or with two toes forward and two toes backward. The slippery catch is secured by the barbed pads on the soles of these unique feet. Such a stable grip enables the osprey to carry the fish headfirst (aerodynamic) to its nest or perch – captured in this picture taken at the Viera Wetlands. Its large nest is constructed of sticks lined with bark, sod, grasses, vines, and sometimes plastic bags. Natural habitats or manmade structures are frequently utilized for nesting, such as trees or utility poles. In previously abandoned locations, specially designed platforms have reestablished the osprey. Evidently, it thrives because it readily adapts. VV

Dr. Coleen Johnston provides mobile veterinarian service for multi-pet households, retirees, individuals with limited time, transportation or mobility and for owners of pets afraid of traditional veterinary options. By Maria Sonnenberg
Boo was 90 pounds of basset hound with all of the aches and pains that come with age. Having thyroid issues and auto-immune problems, the 12-year-old dog was a frequent visitor to the vet, much to the chagrin of owner Grace Doughtie, who dreaded the ordeal of taking the large, unwieldy pooch to the office as much as Boo did. Then, her good friend implored her to take charge of his two elderly Labrador retrievers, one with advanced cancer. “We basically became an assisted living facility for old dogs,” said Doughtie. “Getting the dogs to the vet was a nightmare. To me, it’s worth every penny not to have to put the dog in the car and take him to the vet.” Dr. Coleen Johnston’s Healthy Pet Veterinary Services provides in-home medical care for cats and dogs in Brevard and Indian River Counties. “She changed our lives,” said Doughtie. “I think of her as the female version of Dr. Doolittle.” Johnston’s office-on-wheels is heaven-sent for pet owners who find the convenience of house calls the perfect option for their lifestyles. The service is aimed at multi-pet households, retirees, individuals with limited time, transportation or mobility as well as for owners of pets scared of traditional veterinary hospitals. “Seeing the vet shouldn’t be a terrifying experience for your pet,” said Johnston. “We keep them relaxed in their
home environment. We prefer to get on the floor with your pet where they are most comfortable.” As she does for all her patients, Johnston visited the Doughtie dogs at their own home. “She’d sit on the floor with the dogs, so there was no stress for them,” said Doughtie. When procedures such as tumor removals, spaying and neutering and dental extractions are required, Johnston and clinic manager Cheryl LeMaster handle them in the wellequipped, colorful RV that provides stateof-the-art monitoring equipment, IV fluid pump and digital dental x-rays, among other features. “We bring all the equipment right to your driveway,” said Johnston. The service offers routine preventative care, end-of-life care, medical case management, diagnostic laboratory testing, surgical and dental procedures. When the time inevitably came for Boo to step into hound heaven, Johnston assisted Doughtie and her dog in the journey with in-home euthanasia. “Her approach to end-of-life is so different than many vets,” said Doughtie. “We had time to say goodbye and Boo was relaxed and in his familiar surroundings. They cried along with me. I will never go anywhere else.” For more information on Healthy Pet Veterinary Services, call 321-591-8442 or visit brevardmobilevet.com. VV

B-25 bomber Killer ‘B’ an example of historic war bird By George White
Bomber pilot and Valiant Air Command member Tom Reilly doesn’t worry that he’s not a fighter pilot. He proud to own and keep his North American B-25-J medium bomber Killer ‘B’ flying. “It’s a later model, with the machine gun turret in front, but a B-25 was part of Doolittle’s Raid (where bombers were launched from aircraft carriers to bomb Japan). That’s what made the aircraft so famous,” said Reilly, of Douglas, Georgia. Reilly formerly owned and operated the Flying Tigers Warbird Museum, until Hurricane Charlie had different plans. In 2004, the hurricane damaged the hangars and aircraft and eventually put the operation out of business, according to Reilly. The Killer ‘B’, currently housed at the VAC Warbird Museum in Titusville, was built in 1944 and spent time
in Canada and Venezuela before Reilly purchased it in 2005 and restored it to flying condition. He said that there are currently 40 B-25’s flying. “When you’re a bomber pilot, you’re constantly working on them,” he said. The Killer ‘B’ is undergoing repairs to its landing gear prompted when cracks were found in a key component on the landing gear on a similar bomber. Now, the owners of all B-25s have been notified so that the repairs can be made before a problem occurs. Warbird museum now home to biplane rides

for the 2012 Boomer Senior Guide, published by Bluewater Creative Group, also the Viera Voice publisher. “We want to provide an opportunity for folks to get
a biplane ride when they come to visit the museum, and we’re trying to make it available anytime,” said Izzard, whose day job has him piloting 757 cargo jets. The Lady Liberty was built in 1941 for the Civilian Pilot Training Program getting pilots ready to serve in World War II. Its sister plane at Florida Biplanes, the Waco Belle is also a trainer, according to Izzard. “I just love flying it. I tell my customers every time we taxi back to the hangar that I hope they had half as much fun as I had and I really mean it. We don’t have any disappointed customers,” he said. Model Sallie Mack of Satellite Beach didn’t get a chance to take a flight in Lady Liberty, but was pleased to dress up in a World War II flight jacket and leather helmet for an on-board photo.
“It was absolutely fabulous and a wonderful experience,” she said. The Lady Liberty offers flights for two passengers from 15 minutes for $170 to 45 minutes for $370. Trips range from offering a distant glimpse of Kennedy Space Center and the shuttle landing strip to a low pass over the strip as well as to Port Canaveral and down the beach to near Patrick Air Force Base, returning north over the St. John’s River. Lady Liberty and Waco Belle will be available for flights and other vintage aircraft will be on display at the Boomer Senior Guide Expo and magazine launch on Friday, Feb. 10 at the museum.
