MARCH 2023
BY NANETTE HEBDIGE The 11th annual Light Up Viera Holiday Parade will bring joy and cheer to the community on Dec. 2 as it rings in the holidays and Christmas season. The first parade was held in 2013. There has been a different theme each year to complement the festivities. “This year’s theme — Sounds of the Season — can mean something different to everyone,’’ said Laurie Widzgowski, the marketing and events coordinator for the Viera Company. “For some, it may bring memories of caroling or singing with family and friends, listening to your favorite collection of holiday music, attending a concert highlighting our fabulous symphonies or simply the sounds of the laughter and joy filling the air

Children's Business Fair still popular as ever BY NANETTE HEBDIGE After a great turnout last year, the Brevard Children’s Business Fair, a nonprofit organization, returns Saturday, Nov. 15 to The Avenue Viera. Last year, more than 80 children participated in and introduced their businesses to the community, together with their encouraging parents who believe in motivating their kids early to achieve an entrepreneurial mindset. The age spectrum covers from 6 to 17 for the children to showcase their talent and prove that even at such a young age, they are the architects of the future. “We had over 80 kids participating at last year’s fair. This year, we have 150 with 100 businesses, as we can have one child per business or as many as three showcasing their ventures,” said Nora McFarland, the executive director at the Brevard’s Children’s Business Fair. “Since our first event in 2017, we’ve grown from 25 to 100 businesses all established by kids. It’s become so popular, we have a waitlist, as we have over 40% of the children from last year returning and we only have so much room allocated at The Avenue Viera.” The Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy is the Change Maker sponsor for this year and cash award prices are being donated by the Pizza Gallery and 28 North Gastropub for Best In Show and the different categories.

Amy Hershman and her children Kole, 15, and Hayden, 12, reside in Viera. Kole participated last year and decided to go into partnership with his brother to showcase their business together at the fair this year. “My brother and I have gone into business together as we love to paint. We started getting into it during COVID, looking at tutorials and trying stuff out,” Kole said. “Our art is very vibrant and colorful, all done on cardstock with pigments and markers and we draw from real life to make cartoon-like art, which we frame.” In high school, Kole was accepted to the digital academy, where he learned to work with Photoshop and Illustrator, and he even designs sneakers and sports shoes. “Our stuff is one of a kind and it’s cool that my brother and I have started our own business called Dos Bros Drawing,” Hayden said. “We each have our artwork individually signed and we’re going to be selling Croc-Charms at the fair, which we’ve also designed ourselves.” The fair is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at The Avenue Viera and is expected to be a great outdoor event for families and the community to get together. “The amount of young talent we’ve seen in these past events is truly inspiring and it’s great seeing kids become young entrepreneurs and step out of the box,” McFarland said. Walk With a Doc returns to Brevard County for a second year Nov. 11, as walkers join physicians in a global effort to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle. In Melbourne, Dr. Monisola Oni, a specialist in internal medicine at Steward Primary Care in Cocoa, once again will lead participants on free morning walks along the 2.6-mile Brevard Zoo Linear Park at 8225 N Wickham Road. Walks start at 9 a.m. at the Linear Park entrance on the second and fourth Saturday of the month through April. “We walk for about an hour,” Oni said. “We start off the event with a five- to seven-minute health talk, which is usually done by me.”
“I love the Linear Park, so I think it’s a great location. I like the fact that you’re meeting new people, so there’s definitely a social element to it.” — Dorothy Greenberg
Participants can proceed at their own pace, and Oni provides water for walkers. Walk With a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to convince his patients to get more exercise, Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on
a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, more than 100 people took part. Today, Walk With a Doc is an official nonprofit organization with more than 500 chapters worldwide, including 19 in Florida. The walking-group program appealed to Oni, a native of Nigeria who got certified in obesity medicine in 2019 and stressed the importance of physical activity to her patients. “But I always got excuses from my patients such as, ‘I can’t do it alone’ or ‘I can’t afford a gym membership’ or ‘My community isn’t safe enough’ or ‘There’s just nowhere suitable for walking around me,’” Oni said. “And Walk With a Doc is a national initiative with just a simple mission. We want to improve health in our communities through physical activity, exercise, nature and social connections. So I thought it would be neat to start this in my neighborhood because it will solve all the problems that my patients present to me. And so that’s how it started. I got a few of my patients together and we started walking and then community members started showing up as well.” About 12 to 20 people showed up for each walk last year, Oni said. One of them, Dorothy Greenberg of Heritage Isle in Viera, took part in nearly a half-dozen walks after hearing about the program from a friend. “I love the Linear Park, so I think it’s a great location,” Greenberg said. “I like the fact that you’re meeting new people, so there’s definitely

Viera swimmers believe facing stronger competition will make them better BY CARL KOTALA
The Viera High School swimming and diving team may be in a tougher district and region this season, but that doesn’t mean the Hawks are shying away from the competition. “It will definitely make me stronger, and my mindset will be a lot better knowing this is the competition I’ll be going against,” senior cocaptain Wyatt Chou said. “I need to get to where they’re at and be better than them.” The Hawks, along with Melbourne and Heritage, were moved into Class 3A, District 10 and Region 4 for this season, which means they’ll be competing against tougher teams from farther south.
“We’ve got a great group of kids,” Viera coach Chris Beadle said. “They’ve really bonded over the last few weeks, so that’s nice to see. We’ve got kind of that family vibe. It’s a younger team. Two years ago, we lost 17 seniors. Last year, we lost 13. “We’re kind of regrouping as the year goes on, but they’re getting better and better. They’re learning as we go along, so I can’t ask for more than that. Our times have been getting better every meet. They have the biggest hearts ever.” Senior co-captain Elena Limonta, who swims the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, has seen her VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Angelica Collins time in the latter event go down to 1 minute, 34 seconds The Viera High swimming team has had a successful season. lower her time in the 500 freestyle to less than 7 minutes. “I’m still working on it,” she said. “I’ve definitely made some improvement since last year, but I’m always aiming to make my times faster.” Facing tougher competition in the district meet, scheduled for Oct. 27, could bring that out of her. “I think it’s good motivation to be against stronger competitors,” Limonta said. “It definitely makes you push harder.” Other swimmers to watch
for the Viera girls will be junior Marin Chapon (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly); sophomore Neta Elran (100 backstroke); senior Brooklyn Ernst (200 IM); senior Lauren Ernst (freestyle events) and freshman Janey Vargas (100 free, 100 fly). The top boys include senior Justin Lee (sprints, 100 back); Chou (freestyle events, 100 breast); sophomore Andrew Donaldson (100 fly, 100 free); sophomore Ethan Wotton (500 free); sophomore John Bobelak
(200 IM) and junior Karl Cruz (500 free, 100 fly). Another key senior is special-needs swimmer Luke Owens, who has swum his best times in the 100 back and 50 free this season. Chou is hoping to improve on his best times of 1:13 in the 100 breast and 1:01 in the 100 free. “I want to go under a minute in my 100 free for sure, and then try and go under 1:10 for the breaststroke,” he said. “I definitely feel a lot stronger than last year.” VV

Holy Trinity swimming teams enjoying record-breaking season
“The girls team has absolutely crushed it, especially with their relays, and we may see a few swimmers and maybe their freestyle relays, make it to states.”
BY CARL KOTALA
It’s been a great season for the Holy Trinity boys and girls swimming teams. Not only have the Tigers broken several school records, they’ve also set a number of personal bests. And with the postseason coming, even more records could fall. “So far, my individual events have gone well,” Holy Trinity senior Luke LaGrone wrote in an email. “I have made a lot of progress throughout the season. I’ve dropped over half a second on my 50 free time from the beginning of the season which I’ve been struggling to get down for a while. “For my 100 fly, I’ve had huge time drops even though it’s a relatively new event to me. LaGrone’s twin sister, Allison LaGrone, has also been enjoying a strong season in her three individual events — the 50 and 100-meter freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. “Although it is only my second year, I have been making a lot of personal improvements and have had many personal bests, I hope to continue that going into districts.” Holy Trinity junior Natalie Doig has had herself quite a

That’s not all. Doig, McKenna Coris, Violet Flores and Paige Wolff broke a 12-year-old school record in the 400 free relay by finishing in 3:52.25. With the district and regional events taking place at the end of October, who knows how many Tigers will advance to the state meet, which is set for Nov. 4 in Ocala. “Our chances for the postseason are looking great,” Luke LaGrone wrote. “The

to states. “The boys have a lot of strong swimmers and relays which will likely advance to regionals and possibly states.” Both seniors described this year’s team as having a mix of younger and experienced swimmers who have, as Luke wrote “ambitious goals” and have created a tight bond amongst themselves. “I feel like we are a closeknit family and we get along very well,” Allison wrote.
While the two hope to have even more personal bests and get as far as they can individually, they also hope to leave behind a positive culture that will help the program continue to grow. “This season has been full of fast swims and fun times,” coach Tiffany DeAngelis wrote in an email. “Our Tigers are all pulling together both in and out of the pool, making this one of our strongest teams yet.” VV

People can bring pets on the walks and those who take part in at least three walks get a T-shirt, she added. Participants should sign a waiver before their first walk. Participants have also spotted many wild animals while walking along the Linear Park, a boardwalk that runs through wetlands

The Melbourne chapter is sponsored by donors and Lordoni Discount Pharmacy in Melbourne. The group recently created a Facebook page to encourage more people to take part, Oni said. “We’d love to have more people join us,” she said. “Walking is one of the best things you can do for your health.” For more information, visit walkwithadoc.org/joina-walk/locations/melbourneflorida/ or email Oni at monisaoni70@gmail.com. SCHOOL
Viera band hosts fundraiser for uniforms older than many wearing them BY CARL KOTALA There’s nothing wrong with wearing an original. But when that original is now 17 years old and being held together by strategically placed duct tape, well, that’s not exactly sustainable. To that end, the Viera High School Marching Band is hosting the king of all fundraisers to help raise money to pay for new uniforms. The event is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 5 at the American Muscle Car Museum, a privately owned, 123,000 square-foot facility that hosts nonprofit fundraisers, car activities and educational tours for schoolage children. It features nearly 500 cars ranging from classic American muscle cars from the 1950s to the 1970s to more modern sophisticated cars such as a 2022 Ford GT.
The goal is to raise $60,000 to help pay the total cost of $120,000 it will take to buy new uniforms. The band has been fundraising for the past 2½ years. “Their current uniforms are from when the school originally opened (in 2006). The uniforms are 17 years old. The uniforms are actually older than most of the kids wearing them,” said Gerry Tieri, a Viera band parent who, along with his wife, Michelle, has helped organize the fundraiser. “They’re literally falling apart now. We have an army of parents that have been patching and sewing and keeping these uniforms together.” Cost for the event is $100 per ticket or $175 for a couple. It includes admission, food and non-alcoholic drinks. There are also VIP tickets for $300 ($500 per couple)

The Viera High School band is set to hold a fundraiser on Nov. 5 at the American Muscle Car Museum in an effort to raise the final $60,000 it will take to buy new uniforms. The current uniforms being used are 17 years old, dating back to when the school first opened. In the 2 ½ years the band has been fundraising, the cost of new uniforms has gone from $100,000 to $120,000.

explain the story behind every car he’s bought. “It’s going to be spectacular, especially with getting the personal tour from Mark,” Gerry Tieri said. “He’s a special person. I could listen to him for hours.” In addition, East Coast Axe Throwing is expected to be on hand, charging $1 a throw with all proceeds going to the fundraiser. The company has also donated an auction item — there will be silent and live auctions — for the event. Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey is also scheduled to be on hand to donate an experience “to be determined” at the auction. “We’ve gotten amazing
support from the community,” said Michelle Tieri, who said more than $50,000 in goods and services have been donated to the auctions. Viera will also have a pep band, a jazz band and instrumental duets playing at the event. The Hawks have consistently won awards under the direction of Nick Eggen and Maria Dix. Tickets will be limited to 350 people and can be purchased at GoFan.com with a search for Viera HS Instrumental Music. More information for donations can be found there as well. The Viera band has already raised $60,000. The Tieris are hoping the fundraiser will cover the remaining costs especially since, as Michelle explained, the price has gone up $20,000 since the project began 2½ years ago. “What I wanted to do was put together a fundraiser where yes, we’re asking for money, but you’re going to get something out of it,” Gerry Tieri said. “You’re going to get something exclusive that you can’t go and do on your own on a weekend. “The only way to do this is to buy a ticket to this fundraiser. You’re going to get to go and see spectacular cars that you couldn’t normally see. You’re going to have great food. You’re going to hear music played by the kids. “Even if you’re just looking for something to do on a date night with something really unique. … this is it.” VV

Teacher/Employee of the Year awards go to Draves, McFall BY CARL KOTALA
He is the kind of teacher you want your child to have. The other, well, he has one of the most important jobs on the entire campus. In recognition of their work, Viera High School social studies teacher Jeff Draves and Network Administrator Kyle McFall were named the school’s Teacher and Employee of the Year last month. “Being named Employee of the Year for Viera High School is a tremendous honor and a source of immense pride for me,” McFall wrote in an email. “It reflects the dedication and hard work I've invested in my role as a technology professional. I was genuinely surprised and deeply appreciative of the recognition from my colleagues. It's a testament to the collaborative spirit at Viera High and the importance of technological support in our educational mission.” It’s been a banner year for Draves, now in his 22nd year as a teacher and a previous award winner in 2017. He was honored last month as the 2023 Florida Council for the Social Studies Dr. Theron Trimble Social Studies Teacher of the Year.

“It almost feels like I’m glutenous,” Draves said. “The only thing that helps me sleep at night is that I didn’t nominate myself for either one of them, nor did I vote for myself for either one of them. “There are just so many people that deserve it. It’s a huge school. We have a hundred teachers. For what we deal with now and for what everybody dealt with through COVID … I wish he had more awards to hand out.” Viera principal Heather LeGate praised this year’s award winners. “Jeff is an amazing teacher who builds solid relationships with students and engages them in meaningful learning,” LeGate wrote in an email. “He is always going above
and beyond on campus. From planning prom and graduation, to announcing varsity football games, he is a fixture on campus and
demonstrates the Power of One every day. “Kyle is a great employee and shows the Power of One daily as he helps students and teachers with technology. He does so much behind the scenes to keep us up and running every day. No job is too big or too small and he is always willing to lend a hand.” McFall, who celebrates his second year at Viera this month, said his biggest challenges are staying current with rapidly evolving technology and managing the diverse needs of the school’s staff and students. “What I love most about working at Viera High is
the sense of purpose that comes with supporting our dedicated educators and students,” he wrote. “I find immense satisfaction in providing prompt, courteous assistance, helping to enhance the educational experience. The collaborative and supportive atmosphere at Viera High makes it a truly fulfilling workplace.” McFall’s award was a popular one. “When I won, I was happier for him than I was for myself,” Draves said. “He’s the hardest-working guy on campus. We wouldn’t be able to run that school without him. He’s amazing.” VV

Former FBI agent hurt U.S. immensely as spy for Russia BY ERNIE DORLING Motivated by money and ego, former FBI agent Robert Hanssen sold secrets to the Russians for more than 15 years. Hanssen died June 5, 2023, while incarcerated in the federal maximum-security prison in Florence, Colorado. “I worked with Hanssen when we were both assigned to the Bureau’s office in New York City,” retired FBI agent Jim Caverley told an audience recently at the Suntree Library as he discussed the many highlights of this long-term investigation that rocked the U.S. intelligence community. “He sold out his country.” Caverley, who spent 27 years as an FBI agent, mostly working counterintelligence, told the audience that Hanssen was able to keep his identity hidden from the Russians for
almost the entire time he was feeding them sensitive information. “The Russians were able to verify the information that Hanssen was giving them, but they couldn’t identify who he was,” Caverley said. “Hanssen would make most of his information drops under a small bridge over a stream that was within walking distance of his own home in northern Virginia.” It wasn’t until the breakup of the Soviet Union that members of the former KGB in Russia, looking to capitalize financially, gave Canadian intelligence sources information about a mole in the FBI. Still, the FBI didn’t know the identity of Hanssen. And so, the FBI began a long and painstaking investigation that subsequently identified Hanssen as the person

It was that evidence that identified Hanssen as the source betraying his country. “His actions compromised a number of Soviet personnel who were working with the United States,” Caverley said. “We know that some of those Soviet personnel, who were compromised by Hanssen’s actions, were subsequently executed by the Russians.” Hanssen also gave the Soviets plans on how the U.S.
would respond to a Soviet attack, as well as information about technical operations. This included how the U.S. intercepted communications, as well as detailed information about nuclear programs in the U.S. During the course of Hanssen’s time with the FBI and operating as a spy for Moscow, he pocketed approxi-

ArtWorks: Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival brings winning art, entertaining weekend BY NANETTE HEBDIGE Art lovers will enjoy a fun weekend that showcases great local and national artists as the annual ArtWorks: Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival returns for its 27th year. “There will be 80 artists participating at this year’s festival,” said Sharon Dwyer, the artists coordinator and
past president of ArtWorks. “Many of the artists at the festival have participated in local and national art shows and the media will include painting, drawing, digital art, photography, sculpture, ceramics and jewelry.” ArtWorks is a one-of-akind art show in Brevard County because of the emphasis it places on art education, as the foundation
donates to high school art departments to promote interest in the arts with the young talent in the community. Festival draws crowd to Viera for fun-filled day BY MIKE GAFFEY The weather was a little cooler for a welcome change as the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Viera Harvest Festival held its 11th event, which moved back to The Avenue Viera after it had relocated to Viera Regional Park for two years. Bluegrass music by the Penny Creek Band played in the background as children brought their stuffed animals to the Ted E. Bear Medical Clinic for an annual checkup. All of them were ecstatic as all the animals of all shapes and sizes received certificates for good health. Clinic doctors from Island Animal Hospital, which has facilities in Viera, Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach, were more than happy to show the children how a stethoscope worked and its importance. Otoscopes revealed a few ears that needed cleaning. The sounds of the Zucchini 500 echoed from one corner as all rooted for their favorite car. It was sponsored by Pizza Gallery & Grill and 28 North. Faces were painted all sorts of colors, at the Dan Adovasio State Farm booth, where the line never seemed to end for those waiting. Princess Leia greeted people at the Pumpkin Patch, which proved to be a popular spot to gather, as always. Shelly Harbor, a mermaid, was the most magnificent Scarecrow of all in winning both the Scarecrow Stroll Popular Vote and Best of Show. Ulysses and his sailors would not have been able to avoid the rocks off the coast of Greece if Shelly had been singing. People placed bids for the 21 ’Crows, with all money going to the Brevard Schools Foundation.
“We were really
happy to participate and support the Brevard Schools Foundation, so that was something we were really interested in doing.” — Kolbi Holmes
Florida Wildlife Hospital was a first-time participant in the Scarecrow Stroll as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Awesome Opossum was its entrant. The scarecrow depicted an opossum surrounded by its Florida wildlife friends. “We had quite a few staff and volunteers working on it for a couple of days,”

Launched in 1973 by Carlton and Gladys Teate, the hospital is licensed by state and federal agencies to care for all native Florida species, except alligators, manatees, sea turtles and venomous snakes. However, the hospital does not receive federal or state funds for its work. “We operate solely on memberships, donations and grants,” Quiroz said. The hospital will have a Hoot in the Park Wildlife Festival starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at Wickham Park. It will feature injured animals that can’t be released back into the wild. Those animals serve as wildlife ambassadors that help educate the public. Funds raised will benefit the

This year, Dale Sorensen Real Estate wanted to offer a scarecrow more interactive for children to enjoy. The Clydes “Dale” was a wooden horse complete with a rein and built strong enough to support two women. “We wanted it to be a photo opportunity for the kids,” said Jean Gaudreau of the Gaudreau Group, who along with her husband, Dave, has been selling luxury real estate for more than 20 years. A second location in Suntree for Tommy's Express Car Wash, featuring an open, drivethrough tunnel, will be ready for business during the second quarter of 2024.
Tommy’s Express Car Wash expanding with planned Suntree location BY NANETTE HEBDIGE Tommy’s Express Car Wash set the wheels in motion for its new Suntree location near Pineda Landings at Wickham Road and Jordan Blass Drive. This will be the second location for the Ash family, following the carwash located on Stadium Parkway. It will maintain the same Tommy’s Express Car Wash distinctive décor and architectural features. “This location will be slightly smaller than our first, as the wash tunnel is only 90 feet, offering about 15 self-serve vacuum parking spaces,” said Alexander Ash, who is operations and project manager for the new location. “I learned a lot during the buildout and management of our Stadium (Parkway) location and the Tommy’s group is a great team to work with.” Ash, who grew up in North Carolina but whose family is from Boca Raton, has been entrenched in the operations, running the Stadium Parkway location. He was directly involved with his father, Michael M. Ash Sr., the owner of RCH Properties LLC, during the construction of its first location. RCH Properties LLC owns the
Tommy’s Express Car Wash franchise rights in Brevard County, and after the Suntree location is up and running, will consider other Tommy’s Express Car Wash locations. The carwash concept has an open, drive-through tunnel, with a conveyor belt that pushes the vehicles along slowly for a 2– to 3-minute car wash and after exiting, the cars can stop at the self-serve vacuum spaces. “At the Suntree location, we have a great group of neighboring businesses who have been so welcoming and we’re very excited to be there,” Ash said. “Our opening date is going to be sometime in the second quarter of 2024, of course with permits and construction schedules permitting.” Additionally, Tommy’s Express Car Wash has an easy to navigate app that offers new Unlimited #1 Wash Members a free car wash month. “We encourage our customers to use the app as it offers many perks, but even without it, our team of guys are there to help you set it up, or just provide a great experience all around, as our goal is to get cars in and out as quickly as possible. We’re ready to start washing at our new location!” Ash said. VV

on making Sparrow a reality. Since she loves Viera and, with so much development, she felt this was the best place to open her shop. Her dream became a reality when she was offered a space at the Luna. She was thrilled that construction started early this year and she was able to open in September. “When thinking about a name, I found that sparrows
and self-worth, so that is how the name was born,” Butler said. “I wanted to make sure it focused on creating a community for women. The inspiration has always been to create a welcoming space to support other women makers while doing it.” Sparrow also offers decor accents and accessories to outfit the home, as well as gifts with some unique designer brands. These brands have provided sustainable products represented at the boutique and they showcase the impact they’ve made around the world. “It is the best compliment when customers walk into my store, love the boutique and compare it to Anthropologie. I used to work there and my goal was to offer similar vibes, but at affordable prices
with a more personalized experience,” Butler said. Originally from Tennessee, Butler lives with her husband, daughter and her two dogs in Satellite Beach. Sparrow is at 2391 Town Center Avenue. For information, check out shopsparrowboutique.com. VV

BY NANETTE HEBDIGE
Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks and sumptuous food The year has again breezed by in a sneeze and the holidays are around the corner, beginning with the muchanticipated Thanksgiving celebration. This day brings cozy recollections of family gettogethers and sumptuous cooking. However, no matter how impatiently the culinary
feast is awaited, don’t lose sight of the message — it’s a time of reflection and truly being thankful for the many blessings and the everyday things we take for granted while we bask in the love and companionship of family and friends. The three usual suspects have to make their yearly
Cranberry Tart
appearance. The ill-fated turkey, the dressing and gravy, which truly make the holiday glorious and festive. This longstanding, venerated tradition has been observed since 1621, when the first settlers and Wampanoag Indians gathered by giving thanks for their plentiful, first Autumn harvest.
The sides also play a distinctive part as participants, whether it’s the proverbial tater-mash, green bean casserole, sweet yams, roasted Brussel sprouts or even some mac-n-cheese. After the splendid, not to mention calorific-infused meal, everyone will be lounging back, groaning in a
near comatose state, waiting for football games to kick off and getting ready for the second round — the eagerly awaited desserts. Apple and pumpkin pie will undoubtedly make the customary appearance, but this cranberry tart is a great addition to the usual contenders. V V
PREHEAT OVEN TO 350F Making the crust is time consuming and, with so many great store-bought options, it makes this tart even easier. Filling 12 oz fresh whole cranberries ½ cup granulated sugar plus 2 TBSP 1 tsp orange zest and juice 1 tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp ground ginger
½ cup water 2 small pears — peeled and thinly sliced 1 tsp flour Store-bought tart shells
Add the cranberries, orange zest and juice, sugar, cinnamon and water to a small pan and bring to a boil. Simmer for 6 minutes and get them to pop but don’t overcook them — cool. Pre-bake tart shell for about 20 minutes at 350F degrees. Cool. Add pears to a bowl with sprinkles of ginger, cinnamon and flour and mix gently. Add to the bottom of the cooled tart shell and top with the cranberry jelly mix. Sprinkle the 2 tbsp of sugar on top and bake for about 30 minutes, turning once halfway through the baking. Cool tart completely before serving. Dust with confectioners’ sugar and serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Thankful for our patients this November …and always

A DIFFERENT KIND OF DOCTOR
A local doctor provides truly compassionate care and proven solutions for chronic pain and complicated conditions.
Care Rooted in Empathy and Experience Do you ever wonder what it is that makes some doctors so incredibly compassionate while others have a bedside manner better suited for the DMV? In the case of Dr. Andrea Izquierdo, LAc of Bodhi Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is a case of true empathy. “I suffered from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in my teens and 20s.” In other words, GERD is chronic longterm acid reflux. “I had severe acid reflux three to five days a week that were so intense I was often bedridden and would become physically sick.” Being that GERD is one of those complicated conditions that is difficult to treat, Dr. Andrea’s options were prescription medications that often did not work and to make lifestyle changes to limit triggers that often cause acid reflux. “It was no way to live,” she shares. “I was young and should’ve been living a bright, vibrant life. Instead I was monitoring my daily caffeine intake, sleeping with extra pillows under my head and doing my best to avoid foods that triggered the acid reflux. As you can imagine living with a burning roller coaster from the stomach to the throat was not easy. Managing meal times, triggers and food amounts was rough!” It wasn’t until she tried acupuncture that she found real relief. “This is why I often refer to my practice as ‘The Last Resort With The Best Results.’ You’ve been everywhere else and been given the same disheartening prognosis, prescribed the same medications and told 'this is just something you’re going to have to learn to live.” Soon after her incredible experience with the healing arts she made the life changing decision to abandon her Western Medicine studies and pursue her master's degree in acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. “Acupuncture quite literally saved my life and I wanted to share that with the world.” she proclaims.
Your Golden Years Should Be Golden
her neuropathy treatments gave me my life back,” and “it’s a miracle she treated my fibromyalgia, I don't know how else to explain it.”
While in school she watched as her grandmother began to suffer from peripheral neuropathy.
Dr. Andrea Izquierdo has a long personal history in complicated, difficult-to-understand conditions and understands how tragic it can all be if left untreated.
“Your golden years should be golden, not plagued with insufferable pain while doctors and specialists tell you there is nothing they can do.” Understanding that Eastern Medicine excels where Western Medicine fails, Dr. Izquierdo set forth to develop treatment protocols for all variations of Peripheral Neuropathy (including diabetic and chemotherapy induced) and now has a 90% success rate in treating the symptoms of this once difficult to manage condition. “I was tired of seeing the older generation suffer unnecessarily,” shares Dr. Izquierdo. “Diagnosing them as just getting older and giving them a treatment plan of ‘you’re just going to have to get used to it’ has never sat well with me so I wanted to offer them a real option for treatment and care.”
The Magic of Compassionate Care And what do those in her care have to say? “Dr. Andrea looked me in my eyes and wanted to know about me, not just my condition. I feel like a person, not just a patient,” Mary said. “In fact, I don’t think she ever used the word patient.” Others proclaim, “She saved my life,
“I have sat where my patients sit. I’ve experienced their pain and suffering in a very real way. I know the frustration of feeling hopeless on an intimate level. It’s why I practice the brand of medicine I do and why I’ve made it my life’s mission to treat the ‘untreatable.’ It brings me such incredible joy when. I get to say ‘I can help you!’” Furthermore, Dr. Andrea isn’t opposed to more modern medical solutions. “It’s in blending the time-tested science of acupuncture with recent innovations in medicine that get me the best results.” One of those advancements is ATP Resonance BioTherapy™, originally developed by NASA it aids nerves in regeneration by providing them the nutrients they need to repair and renew, “very similar to what water does for a plant!” Dr. Izquierdo and her staff specialize in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions and autoimmune diseases that leave other professionals scratching their heads. Fighting muck never ends for IRL
How much muck is in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL)? The answer is Lagoon Straight Talk too much, but it is getting better. From the First, what is muck? Brevard Indian River Often described as “black Lagoon Coalition mayonnaise,” muck is the goo that accumulates in depressions and other locations throughout the IRL. Bluewater Creative Group - Issue 17 Before 1990, 33 utilities dumped It’s made up of all of the material 16 billion gallons per year of partially washed into the IRL during the past treated waste directly into the IRL. 70 years of development, such as That ended in the 1990s thanks to grass clippings, dirt and silt from state and federal legislation, but the construction and sod, and partially “legacy load” is still part of today’s treated poo. muck. While we oppose all dumping, Poo is actually a positive story.

today’s spills add less than 0.3% of the pre-1990s amounts annually. What does muck do to the IRL? By coating the healthy sandy bottom, muck can prevent seagrass from growing and can destroy habitat for small fish, crabs and other bottom dwellers. Beyond that, muck is chemically active and continually produces a flux or release of nitrogen and phosphorus, the very pollution that encourages algae blooms. The research behind the Save Our Indian River Lagoon (SOIRL) Plan indicates that muck flux contributes 23% of the nitrogen and 21% of the phosphorus load to the IRL annually. So, we need to act to control this major source. SOIRL is acting! It has identified 19 dredging projects to vacuum the muck off the IRL bottom. By removing the muck, it no longer

fluxes. Four are already completed; together, the 19 projects should reduce nitrogen entering the IRL by 223,000 pounds per year. The muck removed contains large amounts of water that is high in nitrogen and phosphorus. SOIRL is using an innovative approach to remove this pollution and return cleaner water. SOIRL is motivating its dredging contractors to extract and treat this contaminated water by offering a “pay for performance” daily bonus provided its meets specified cleaning targets. This appears to be paying off for the IRL as the contractors have fine-tuned their processes to generally hit the targets. The short answer is SOIRL is not messing around. Sweet Adelines is a global community of singers who join voices to sing in the harmony of a barbershop or beauty shop. “I like performing,’’ Kroger
said. “It’s a wonderful form of exercise. When you’re up there singing, you can’t be worried about the events of the world. It’s very liberating. For a moment, we’re not thinking about who shot who in Orlando or the possibility of World War III.’’ The Platinum Show Chorus performs regularly for Space Coast Honor Flight, as well as at various retirement communities in Brevard County. It also joins its brother group, the Harbor City Harmonizers, from time to time for group performances. Both groups will perform at the Boomer Bash Senior Expo, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Harbor City Harmonizers

More is yet to come as Recyle Brevard continues its mission Back on April 30, we had a tough mission in closing the doors of our facility in Rockledge. We had about a month of preparation. We donated some of our furniture and materials from our Reuse Room to various organizations and programs in Brevard County, such as the Supply Zone for Teachers, Rolling Readers, Bear Hugs, the Sharing Center, Florida Wildlife Hospital, Odyssey of the Mind groups, garden clubs and many other small businesses and local residents that had use for those materials. What was not needed, we recycled. We then moved out. Our search for a donated space where we could have our Reuse Room has not been successful thus far, despite reaching out to various entities. But, Recycle Brevard is getting reorganized with the resources that are available and the volunteers that continue onboard. Oct. 30 marked the sixth month of the start of a new phase for Recycle Brevard. We are looking forward. Besides its office, Cocoa Village is home to Recraft Bazaar, where one can find a variety of gift items and arts and crafts materials available for a nominal donation. Every donation made assists Recycle Brevard to carry on its programs to help the community to practice the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and recycle more. Recraft Bazaar is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each Saturday. It will be closed through Dec. 9. It will reopen Dec. 16, just before the holidays. In addition to the Cocoa Village location, Recycle Brevard now has a drop-off box at the north end of Mrs. Mango & Company at 3500 South U.S.1 in Rockledge. The business was kind enough to allow a Recycle Brevard box to be installed on its property, partnering with us in the mission of reducing waste in our community — thank you.
