Space Coast Symphony Orchestra and its baby-faced conductor will find a new home with its 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 debut performance of An American Journey at Calvary Chapel Melbourne’s Viera campus. State-of-the-art acoustics, sound equipment and lighting as well as an increased seating capacity are just some of the reasons Aaron Collins is ecstatic. “Every time we move to a new permanent performance location we add new faces to the audience,” said Collins, who started SCSO at age 24 in 2009. CCM has several thousand congregants on campuses in Brevard and beyond and Collins said he hopes the site location will inspire members to attend as well as the general public. Collins’ mission is to bring live symphony performance to the masses in a race to save the art. In order for symphonic performance to thrive with the times, it must be innovative, diverse in its musical forms, include many popular themes and be accessible to all regardless of ability to pay, he said. His performances are free for children through age 18, capped at a family rate and always available if a patron cannot pay. “Traditional orchestras are failing at recruiting

Joey’s Chicago Style Eats brings food truck trend to Viera and Acosta will donate a percentage of their earnings to the cause. “We hope to do much more community outreach as we move forward. We’ve done some events with schools and want to expand on that,” Waddy said. So where did the duo come up with the idea of a food truck? They say it all developed through driveway conversations they had over time as neighbors. Waddy’s experience selling with a hot dog cart and Acosta’s experience operating a

brick-and-mortar restaurant seemed like the right merger for success. “Joe and I decided to work together because we both know the secret ingredient to success — hard work,” Acosta said. “We both have the same work ethic and strive to be the best and I think that’s what makes us a winning combination.” For information on where you can find Joey’s Chicago Style Eats food truck, check out the Facebook page at Joey Hotdogs. Joe Waddy, left, and Mike Acosta believe hard work is the key to a successful business. BY KATIE PARSONS

Food trucks are all the rage in the out-to-eat industry but the trend often comes with a high price tag attached. Viera residents Joe Waddy and Mike Acosta aim to change that with Joey’s Chicago Style Eats — a food truck that offers popular menu items at a reasonable price. “We offer a lower price point than other food trucks, and want families to be able to buy what we have and not spend

a fortune,” said Acosta, who also serves as the operating partner at Viera Pizza. Joey’s Chicago Style Eats offers fresh convenient lunch options, including Chicagostyle hot dogs, grilled chicken salads, sausage and pizza by the slice made by Viera Pizza. Since hitting the road five months ago with the mobile restaurant, the truck has become a popular lunch spot in Viera and beyond. Monday through Friday the truck heads to different

locations, along with setting up at special events in the evenings and on weekends. The truck has been invited to staff lunches at Anderson Elementary School, Viera High School and other local businesses. The truck also travels out to Kennedy Space Center’s Exploration Park. In the New Year, Waddy says the food truck will partner with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office during its pet adoption events. In addition to selling food to attendees, Waddy

VIERA VOICE ROSEMARY H. LYNN

Tyler Tennity, far right, has received help from both his family and the owners of Rockledge Gardens in his fight against a rare bone cancer. BY ROSEMARY H. LYNN

When 15-year-old Tyler Tennity found out he had Ewings Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that affects young males more often than young women, he vowed to fight it with everything he had. The Palm Bay High School student wasn’t about to give up his love of gardening just because his immune system was compromised. When he learned about the dirt-free growing system offered in hydroponics, he decided to educate himself to see if he could cultivate fruits and vegetables that he loves in this water growing system. Using coconut fiber and minerals along with perlite rather than soil and fertilizer to grow everything from lettuce to kale, to radishes and more, hydroponics incorporates water and minerals, which is perfect for those suffering froms immune deficiencies. The systems only look complicated. In fact, they are relatively easy to maintain once the basics are learned. Rockledge Gardens has complete setups to help almost anyone learn how to cultivate herbs and veggies in a dirt-free, water-based method. Tyler, a Reggae enthusiast and avid cancer warrior, is a bright young man who knows that fighting for his life is an everyday endeavor. He had been growing plants in a standard soil-based garden prior to his doctor telling him he needed to stay away from anything that could compromise his immune system. He learned vieravoice.com

about hydroponics and talked to his parents about acquiring a growing system. However, the Rileys, who own Rockledge Gardens, put together a total of four complete systems to donate to the young man with a green thumb. “I am now hospitalized about every other day so I can’t tend to a regular garden anymore,” he said. “The fruits and vegetables you buy at local stores are chemical induced and unhealthy for most people. I

want to produce pure fruits, vegetables, wheat grass and herbs not just for myself and my family, but for others as well.” Rockledge Gardens has vowed to include Tyler produce in its weekly farmer’s market offerings. He is excited about beginning this new venture with the help of his parents. Rockledge Gardens can be contacted at 321-6367662 or via email at info@ rockledgegardens.com. VV

War hero’s son visits local Sea Cadets BY GEORGE WHITE

A Dec. 6 visit by the son of a war hero, quite fascinating in his own regard, had excitement at a high pitch at the U.S. Sea Cadet Corps, Dave McCampbell Battalion in Suntree.

Dave McCampbell was an American naval aviator who became the U.S. Navy’s all-time leading ace with 34 aerial victories during World War II. The third-highest scoring U.S. flying ace of World War II, he was the highest-scoring ace to survive

the war. The day’s honoree and speaker, the son of the namesake, David McCampbell was found through the diligence of Lt. John F. Panik Jr. “I researched it and tried to find out where he was at and I didn’t give up hope. I contacted West Palm and finally I had a break and I found him in 2013 and found out that sometimes he stays in this area and would agree to speak,’’ he said. ”They wanted to find a vet that was related to Melbourne, and Melbourne

airport used to be a Naval Air Station for training during World War II,’’ explained Laura Mohoney, public affairs officer. “We like to connect with the veterans and the history of the area. We’re trying to be very educational. We have a lot of historical resources around.’’ McCampbell had each member of the unit get up and state their names along with their favorite activities before starting his slide show about the fighting in the Pacific during World War II. Many said Sea Cadets. `Dave McCampbell and his

Viera Army JROTC Raider program a huge success BY CARL KOTALA

Being a member of Viera High’s Army JROTC Raiders team has had a profound effect on a number of the cadets’ lives. “Raider definitely has helped me in more ways than I can ever imagine,” senior cadet Matthew Baker said. An extracurricular part of being a member of the school’s JROTC program, the Raiders’ season lasts six months, during which time they train perhaps harder than any athlete in the school. It’s all in an attempt to qualify for the state competition, which Viera has now done for the past six years. “Personally, I don’t think the teams get the credit in the high school that they deserve,” said retired Master Sgt. Michael Sonnenschein, who coaches the team. The team competes in events such as the rope bridge, a team 5K run, a cross-country rescue (which is essentially a 120-pound litter carry), a Physical Fitness Challenge (each raider has to carry 10 30-pound sandbags over 250 meters), a tire flip (done over 100 meters for time) and also take a written first-aid test. “(The rope bridge) is the only technical event we have,” Sonnenschein said. “Everything else, they’re gutting it out. The litter

carry with the rucksacks, they’re going a half-to-threequarters of a mile out and a half-to-three-quarters of a mile back three times a week (during practice). They’re doing their sandbags three times a week.” While the physical demands are taxing, the cadets who do it not only love it, but they say they also have a lot of fun. “I was wrestling in middle school, so then I decided this looks hard,” senior cadet Melik Sava said. “I took it up. My first year, I didn’t do well. I didn’t make any team. I kept working really hard and now I’m on the ‘A’ team, which is the varsity level team. I’ve been to states three years in a row.” Last month’s state competition was the second for Baker, who joined the JROTC as a freshman, but didn’t go out for the Raider program. “I was a little shy,” he said. “I wasn’t really up for it. Then, halfway through the year, we had a PT assessment for the class and I got the Presidential Fitness Award. I was one of the only cadets to get it and Master Sergeant picked up on my scent. He was like, ‘You better come out for Raider next year.’ ” Being a part of the Raider program has helped Baker come out of his shell. He and Sava said it also promotes strong leadership and

communication skills. The list of Viera High cadets that took part in last month’s state competition included Sava, Baker, Dalton Fisher, Eddie Vazquez, Bryan Crocker, Joshua Dean, Tristan Alexander, Michael Vega, Andre Kroen, Jason Gerber, Kyle Crocker, Michael Owens and alternates Alec Jones and Alexander Seeley. Viera went into the state competition hoping to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish. “The reason we’ve done so well is because of determination,” cadet Sava said. “We all like to win.” VV

It’s always nice to see hard work pay off, and that was certainly the case for the Viera High Army JROTC Raiders at last month’s State Raider Championships. Viera finished in third place — a program best — in the event held at Camp Flaming Arrow in Lake Wales on Dec. 13. The team camped out at the site the night before the event and awoke to 41-degree temperatures, which made the Rope Bridge event more of a challenge — one Viera conquered with a second-place finish. Viera would get another strong performance in the Cross Country Rescue event. All 10 Raiders got a perfect score on their first aid test, then finished the course in 5:51, which was also good enough for second place.

Holy Trinity boys basketball aims for ‘special’ season

BY CARL KOTALA

Holy Trinity’s six seniors plan on making their last season of playing varsity boys basketball for the Tigers one to remember “It’s pretty exciting knowing that this year could be a special year for all of us,” co-captain Keoni Wallington said. “I’m looking forward to it. “We have a lot of potential that we haven’t got into yet. This could be a special year for us. We could go pretty far with all of the pieces that we’ve got. We’ve just got to play together more and we’ll be all right.” The Tigers certainly got off to a fast start, opening the season 5-0 behind their nowfamiliar style of up-tempo play that wears opposing teams down. “We’re not very tall,” Holy Trinity coach Steve Henderson said. “We have five guards. We’re back to the same mentality of trying to use our speed and conditioning to help win games this year.” In addition to Wallington, who last month became the

But so far, the senior likes what he sees. “I’ve been real pleased,” Hogan said. “Everyone’s been working hard. The young guys are stepping up, too … it’s working.” V V

There is also a strong freshman class led by Jashaun Corbin, Brandon Schwab and Tyler Forde. The mixture of veterans and youth has been a good combination for the Tigers. “The guys that are returning have been here a while, so the system’s second hand to them,” Henderson said. “They’re being able to help and coach and make the adjustments for the younger kids. It’s been extremely helpful so far to help get us off to a good start.” As they have always done under Henderson, the Tigers are using strong play on the defensive end to feed their offensive output. Viera boys basketball rebuilding a winner BY CARL KOTALA

The rebuilding process is in full swing as the Viera High boys basketball team works its way through the 2014-15 season. And while new coach Terry Parks believes the wins will come, it’s not the first order of business. “We’re learning how to compete,” Parks said following a recent game against Martin County. “After Christmas, toward the end of the season — even before then, actually — you’ll see a very competitive team. When you compete the way we did (against Martin County), you’re going to win some, you’re going to lose some, but I think you win more than you lose. We played really hard (against Martin County).” The Hawks, who did not win a game last season, have already shown improvement. Viera has already won two

games and is led by a large group of underclassmen, including junior co-captains Matt Schwarz and Cayman Wade. The two juniors are bound and determined to do what they can to turn the Hawks back into a winning program. “We’re going through a rough time right now, but I feel like we’ll be better in the end, which is always the best (scenario),” Wade said. “ As long as we work as a team, we’ll get through this and we’ll be a better team at the end. That’s truly how I feel.” A big part of that, Schwarz said, will be learning how to take the effort the Hawks show during practice onto the court when the games really count. “It’s all about intensity for me,” Schwarz said. “If you bring out the intensity … we have all the talent. Sports is all mental. If we just bring that tough mentality, we can break this tradition of

Viera girls basketball hopes to surprise doubters BY CARL KOTALA

How do you replace two players who went on to sign Division I scholarships? Well, if you’re Viera High girls basketball coach Jamie Risberg, the answer is simple. “What else do you do, but keep playing ball,” she said. “It’s a good team full of girls. They work hard. They’re usually good shooters.” Life after the departures of Dee Anderson and Ro Hayes hasn’t been as bad as some might have expected. Viera was off to a 5-4 start with one of those wins — a 62-27 victory against Space Coast — representing a big milestone for Risberg. It was her 400th coaching victory. Led by senior forward Kelsey Muller, junior guard Alyssa Laudato, senior guard Jessika Wojciechowski and senior transfer Kaylyn Magee, the Hawks are proving to be a tough challenge for anybody they face. “We’re doing pretty good. I’m surprised. I was worried about how we would work together and blend because

we had Kaylyn, the new transfer from Missouri, and we weren’t sure how she would play. “She’s definitely helped us a lot. She rebounds, she hustles every day of the week. We definitely know how we click more this year. We’re doing a lot better than expected. Most people doubted us because we lost our two very good seniors. But we’re definitely pulling through and doing really good. I’m proud of us.” While the Hawks figure to get better as the season goes along, there is one area in which they will always struggle. Muller is the team’s tallest player at 5-foot-8, which means the Hawks will be at a distinct height disadvantage against certain teams. “Nothing we can do about that, just do the best you can, try to play collectively as a unit and hang in there,” Risberg said. Viera will have to wade through a Class 7A, District 12 group that includes Martin County, Melbourne and Sebastian River. While making a deep playoff run is no longer a

Viera wrestling optimistic about this season BY CARL KOTALA

Four little words describe the feeling around the Viera High wrestling program these days: Things are looking up. “Last year, since we only had three returning varsity kids … that was our rebuilding year,” Viera senior Chase Vollenweider said. “This year, I’m thinking we’re going to do pretty well.” Vollenweider, who will wrestle at 113 pounds, is a big reason for that optimism because he, junior Darius Darr (120) and sophomore Jonathan Conlin (132) are all returning regional qualifiers from last season. That trio will form a strong core for the Hawks, along

Bingo night is all right BY OLIVIA PETERS 5TH GRADE COMET STUDENT

Williams Elementary has very exciting fundraisers. One of the first events this school year was Bingo Night. At this fundraiser there were bingo games, dancing, music, food and a book fair. The cafeteria, where Bingo Night was held, was decorated with balloons and streamers along the stage where the bingo prizes were set up. The bingo games were very exciting and the teachers always found a fun and interesting way to announce the letters and numbers. Grade level by grade level, the new principal, Mr. Chris Reed, called kids up to dance. Our principal is interactive with the kids of Williams Elementary and adds excitement to our activities. This is a very memorable thing about Mr. Reed. Bingo is always fun because you are playing with your friends and even if you don’t win, you still have a good time. The book fair was in the Media Center and it featured many new, interesting books. The PTO is a very big part of our school and Bingo Night was extremely fun, so the PTO deserves a thanks. VV

Students give thanks for what they have by giving to those without BY LINDA WIGGINS

Children at Manatee Elementary School in Viera gave thanks for a home of their own by putting money into tiny houses to help children without a roof overhead. The inaugural “gratitude initiative” started a week before Thanksgiving with students in grades four through six collecting donations in tiny houses they had crafted and decorated, and on Dec. 15 presented $2,185.88 to charity recipient Family Promise of Brevard, the group that houses intact families at area churches until they can be placed in permanent housing. For sixth-grader Madison Calvert, the Houses for Change project was an eye opener. “I did not realize there were children and families that needed food and clothing in our area, let alone shelter,” Madison said. “I wish everyone could have a home and a healthy, happy family like me and not have

Tara Pagliarini of Family Promise of Brevard accepted a check for nearly $2,186 collected by students at Manatee Elementary School ― including her son, Jake ― to help the charity provide shelter for homeless families. to worry about where they sleep or what they will eat.” Older students helped the homeless families, while those in second and third grades helped children who live with their grandparents, and those in kindergarten and first grade helped homeless pets

in shelters, all a part of the new Manatee Gives Back effort. “As this was our first outreach effort of this kind and magnitude, we wanted to support organizations with whom we have existing relationships and that directly affect our

The school’s video club put together a video that gave people an idea of all the activities that go on around the school, from music to art, media and physical education. Winners of the poem/haiku contest were also named for each grade and there was a used book sale with offerings donated by families, teachers and students. Kids could also take part in the ClayZ art station, where they made and decorated their own Christmas ornaments. The night was certainly a family affair, with everyone from music teacher John Kurowski, art teacher James Burks and media specialist Joye Kralovec helping to put on the show. The kindergarten and first-grade teachers served food and, of course, the whole thing couldn’t happen without the help of the school custodians. It was that kind of familial feeling that made the night so special for all those involved. “The really amazing part about the evening, I would say … was the feeling of family that you felt when you walked into the school,

and the warmth of being welcomed,” Sanchez said. “That was awesome. We had families wanting to hang around and enjoy the evening and just be a part of everything, even if they didn’t have children that were performing. They just wanted to come and be a part of the school and the event. “That I attribute to the new principal (Chris Reed) and the new assistant principal (Wesley Herold) at our school. They’re really bringing the community together.” VV

local (school) community,” Manatee PTO president Nicki Hensley said. A Manatee teacher, a grandparent volunteer and a parent volunteer with affiliations with Family Promise and the two other charities, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and the Central Brevard Humane Society, lead the individual collections. “The youngest children were very inspired to help pets in need, the ones a bit younger could appreciate the value of helping grandparents raising their grandchildren, while the oldest among them have the empathy to help peers their own age and their family members to obtain the basic needs that children might otherwise take for granted if they were not exposed to the needs in the community,” Hensley said. Each second- and thirdgrade class “adopted” two children affiliated with Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and purchased items on their

holiday wish list, from bicycles to baby items. The youngest children collected materials, food and supplies for the dogs and cats and encouraged families to consider opening their homes to a furry new member. According to Family Promise director Tara Pagliarini, families are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Making children aware of the need and getting them engaged in action is a huge step in the right direction, she added. “During last school year, over 2,200 students were coded as homeless, which doesn’t account for those children birth to 5 years old. Since becoming operational just over a year ago, Family Promise of Brevard has received nearly 900 calls from families in crisis,” Pagliarini said. “The project, students with houses helping students without, is a great step toward ending family homelessness.” VV

‘Night of the Arts’ spotlights talents at Williams Elementary

BY CARL KOTALA

The annual “Night of the Arts” is always a special event at Ralph Williams Jr. Elementary School. This time around, it was even better. Using the theme “Bringing the Arts to Life,” the Dec. 9 event featured performances by the school’s choir, orchestra and percussion groups, as well as the Crane Art Gallery, where students displayed guitars they had made out of shoeboxes. Vendors from local small businesses lined the hallways and there was also pizza from Viera Pizza, hot cocoa from Starbucks and food donated by Entenmann’s. There was even an allergy-free table that offered something for people with food allergies. More than 350 people attended the event. “The families were all excited,” Williams PTO president Casey Sanchez said, “because their children were performing. The children were all excited (because) they were performing. Anytime a child gets to perform on a stage it always builds confidence.” vieravoice.com

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF

Quest Elementary School this month began its fifth year as a National Elementary Honor Society member school, among the first in the country to obtain an affiliation to the national effort launched in 2008. It is the only member school among the four public elementary schools that serve the Viera/Suntree area, with Viera Charter School, now in its second year, recently joining. Suntree Elementary School parents and teachers are currently in meetings to consider membership. “I would love to see all schools have a NEHS,” said Quest teacher Tracy Lally, in her first year as club sponsor. “I volunteered to sponsor NEHS because I could see no down sides. The dues are a nominal annual fee. It’s a win-win for all. I don’t mind donating my time because the students are willing to come into school early for our meetings and give their time to help others.” The NEHS was established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) in cooperation with the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) to recognize elementary students in both public and non-public elementary schools for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrated personal responsibility. “Launching NEHS provides a continuum of excellence from elementary, to middle, to high school,” NEHS director David Cordts said. The program feeds into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and National Honor Society (NHS), the nation’s two oldest and largest student recognition programs, all under the NASSP program headquartered in Reston, Va. in NJHS, and HTEA and Viera High School are NHS members. Students must meet academic benchmarks, but an equal emphasis is placed on reaching out to those less fortunate and developing leadership skills along the way to affect such positive change across society. “The VCS chapter of NEHS provides an opportunity for elementary school students to earn recognition for their academic excellence and to benefit from participation in activities designed to improve the lives of all of their peers at school,” said Dina Engler, VCS sponsor. “With the new VCS NEHS chapter in place, VCS will further enhance its culture of achievement and the core values of scholarship, responsibility, leadership, and service. It’s more than just an honor roll; it is designed to provide ageappropriate experiences and relevant lessons for its members to influence the

development of the whole child.” Students collect food for the needy, volunteer outside school, raise money, establish and enhance recycling efforts and conduct a host of other activities, and then make posters, give speeches and encourage the spirit of giving among their peers and younger students. The selfless acts can have selfserving benefits, said one student member. “The main reason why NEHS is important to me is because of the idea helping people lifts my spirits,” said Quest student Lily Yarbrough. “I’m not part of the organization because I’m ‘smart,’ I’m a member because making people happy and helping them smile is my ideal.” For more information about obtaining club membership for a school from elementary through high school, go to nhs.us. composers and will include a variety of other American music forms, including George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess,” blockbuster-film icon John Williams’ powerful and soaring score to the film, “Lincoln,” and the more classical Symphony No. 2 “Romantic,” written by Howard Hanson on commission from Serge Koussevitsky for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1930. SCSO and its founder have been called upstart, radical, nonconformist and more by fans and foes alike. According to Collins, that’s just what it takes to keep new blood flowing into the art form in terms of both patrons and performers. The Viera venue is perfect for raising up youth to continually feed into orchestras, Collins said. “After five-plus years, we are now seeing the young people who came to play with us getting accepted into symphonies all over the country and beyond,” said Collins, the Cocoa Beach native looking like he would be more at home on a surfboard than tap, tap tapping on a music stand to signal the start of a sonata. “With the amazing way families in Viera and Suntree invest in their children and value the arts,” Collins said, “this new location is a partnership I could only dream of.” For more information on the show or the season lineup, which includes venues across the region, go to spacecoastsymphony.org or call toll free 855-252-7276. New rabbi hopes temple will become spiritual home to those without BY LINDA WIGGINS

For Rabbi Joel Fox, moving to Viera was as much for personal family reasons as it was for professional advancement. The new spiritual leader at the conservative synagogue Temple Beth Sholom in Suntree was named to the post in August. Prospective congregants will have a chance to meet the new rabbi in the New Year at a special service at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9 at the temple, located at 5995 N. Wickham Rd. “Being here has been a gift from God and a wonderful opportunity to live my dream and calling,” said Fox, who had been a cantor at a synagogue in South Florida. A cantor is traditionally second in command and focuses on the musical delivery of the religious

message, while a rabbi focuses on directing study of the Torah, or Bible. Fox became a rabbi two months before taking the Suntree job. “It was also an opportunity to move my young family to an area with excellent schools, low crime, and a great lifestyle surrounded by beauty,” Fox added. Fox’s wife, Natalie, launched a Suntree business creating marketing materials and providing other graphic design services for businesses, while their two daughters and son attend Manatee Elementary, Kennedy Middle and Viera High schools. Fox’s selection as rabbi will be a pivotal one for Brevard, a community with a relatively small percentage of people of Jewish faith. Temple Beth Sholom is as much a cultural center

as a house of worship, providing an opportunity to network and obtain foods and products key to faith and culture not readily available in Brevard. It offers regular worship and study opportunities that include the traditional Friday evenings and Saturday mornings of Sabbath, as well as community events that help members and the community at large. The Viera/Suntree area is home to two of the three main Jewish congregations in the county. Temple Israel in Viera to the west of Temple Beth Sholom is reform, while the Chabad of the Space & Treasure Coasts in Satellite Beach to the east is orthodox. This places Temple Beth Sholom in the geographic center of a near straight corridor swatch across the center of Brevard, as well as the center of the Jewish faith spectrum. He and Temple Israel’s Rabbi Patricia Hickman both served as cantors at their respective conservative and reform temples in Jacksonville two decades ago and have renewed their friendship. Already, the former cantors have performed together at a Nov. 15 religious concert featuring worldwide Jewish pop star Sheldon Low at Temple Beth Sholom. Both temples are members of the Jewish Federation of Brevard, a nonprofit religious

Fox has also reached out to the Chabad, riding motorcycles in tandem with the orthodox spiritual leader Rabbi Zvi Konikov in the annual Chabad Across Brevard Menorah Parade Dec. 18. The gregariously disarming and likable Fox said he hopes to call out Jewish families across Brevard and neighboring counties who do not currently have a temple

membership. “My goal is to help create a warm and caring spiritual home filled with a passion for study, worship and acts of loving kindness.” For more information on the temple or the special service, call Dawn Hawkins at 321-254-6333 or go to mytbs.org. Brevard approves zoning for Space Coast Credit Union expansion BY MIKE GAFFEY

Space Coast Credit Union’s plans for a $30 million expansion to its Baytree corporate headquarters that would add up to 600 jobs are on track after the Brevard County Commission unanimously approved a zoning change for the project. The zoning change, approved Dec. 4 by the commission, allows the credit union to add four 55-foot-high structures — three office buildings and a 500-vehicle parking garage — at its location at 8025 N. Wickham Rd. Credit union attorney Philip Nohrr urged the commission to approve the rezoning, explaining that the 300-employee credit union’s current 80,000-square-foot headquarters is too small to accommodate any more staff. A 5,100-square-foot branch office also operates at the site. “The credit union, if it wants to bring in another employee today, it can’t,”

The Brevard County Commission approved a zoning change allowing Space Coast Credit Union to add three office buildings and a 500-vehicle parking garage at its Baytree headquarters. The expansion could add up to 600 jobs. Nohrr said. “That job basically goes south . . . we can’t house that. We’re stretched to the max with what we’ve got. So we want that building and we want that building now.” Nohrr said the credit

union would build the four-story parking garage first, completing it by March or April, then begin construction on the first of the trio of three-story buildings at the site of the headquarters’ old parking

lot. Eventually, the project would add more than 100,000 square feet during a 10-year period. To appease Baytree residents, Nohrr said the credit union is willing to add more vegetation as a

buffer between the facility and the adjacent residential community and alter its road improvement plans, which include new turn lanes and traffic signals, to preserve Baytree’s large entrance sign at Baytree Drive and Wickham Road. Several residents spoke against the rezoning proposal. Baytree resident Joy Morgan said the increased traffic as a result of the expansion would cause a public safety hazard for pedestrians and harm nearby small businesses. “A campus such as the one proposed by the credit union is better suited for an area such as the Viera Government Center, where there are similar campus buildings,” Morgan said. Resident Richard Bosseler said one of the proposed new three-story buildings would enable its occupants to look down upon homes, hurting property values. He

Post-Brevard County Commission life has familiar ring BY LINDA WIGGINS

Suntree/Viera area’s District 4 Brevard County Commissioner Mary Bolin Lewis started her life post-politics last month. Both former and new commissioners can benefit from the insights of those who have come before them to assist in what will be a huge change of life, first on entering office, later on leaving it, said one former politico. “When you first get on the commission, it is like sucking on a fire hose for the first

three months,” said Bolin Lewis’ District 4 predecessor, Sue Carlson, who like Bolin Lewis served the full twoterm span limited to eight years. “You are getting a Ph.D. in local politics.” Expect to gain a limitless number of new friends overnight. Politics may be the closest thing to royalty that the American commoner can experience, apart from scoring a national touchdown or recording a No. 1 hit. Everyone, it seems, wants something, and you have to limit your time in order to

absorb the greatest amount of information in the shortest possible time. “Everybody treated you like you were important, but it was because you had to make the decisions. It was a little strange, having everyone address me as Madame Commissioner and all this other stuff,” Carlson said. Unlike “mere” celebrities, however, politicians make decisions that directly affect the financial standing of others, and influencing those decisions becomes Job One for many. The work is exciting, but can be thankless and exhausting, Carlson said. “Whenever I tackle something, I can be a workaholic, like 60 to 70 hours a week. I got pretty burned out. You start working a year ahead before you even get into office, so that’s nine or 10 years of a lot of hours, a lot of work,” Carlson said. “Mudslinging during campaigns is very stressful, the worst. It took my brain a while to come down from having so many things to deal with at one time.” In years of late, the mudslinging has extended to within a politician’s own party, not just during campaigns but daily, with extremists viciously criticizing officeholders trying to hold a balanced position. “Once you leave office, it is a big relief, because the stress is gone. I did not have any desire to seek higher office, although a lot of people wanted me to,” Carlson said. Like Carlson, Bolin Lewis disappointed many of her supporters by not seeking higher office at the end of her second term. Both were seen by their political party as holding great promise at securing key higher posts. “When you get into Tallahassee and Washington, D.C. you get far removed from the community and I really wanted to be involved in the local community,” Carlson said.

Sue Carlson, right, has spent her post-commission efforts helping establish the Promise in Brevard community for adults with disabilities, which just received $15.8 million from the Florida Housing Finance Board to cover 80 percent of project costs, in the hopes her daughter, Andrea, and others will thrive there for life. Both former politicians wanted a break to focus on their personal lives. Carlson needed to focus her attention on the special needs of her daughter, who was 10 when she took office and is now 26 and looking to transition to as independent a lifestyle as possible. Bolin Lewis, who became a widow shortly into her first term, remarried and is looking to enjoy life with her new husband together as a couple.

Mary Bolin Lewis As is common with former county commissioners, both Carlson and Bolin Lewis are now consultants, both for others who share their views and for causes about which they are passionate. Carlson is a community leader for Promise in Brevard, a community under development for young adults with disabilities. Lending her political expertise to the cause helped Promise founder Betsy Farmer secure $15.8 million

in Florida housing funds that will be used to build the community where Carlson’s daughter, Andrea, Farmer’s son Luke, and many others will be residents. After many years, much debacle, false starts and disappointing stops, Bolin Lewis was the sitting commissioner when the Pineda Causeway Extension finally was approved and constructed. She will use her influence to continue the Pineda Extension past the west Viera community under development all the way into Orlando, the project committee awaiting a reply from Gov. Rick Scott on options submitted. “If my past political experience can continue to do some good, that’s great,” Carlson said, but that’s where it ends. She described a recent reception for incoming Brevard county commissioners attended by a number of formers like herself. “I looked around at all the current and incoming commissioners ‘glad handing’ with everyone in the room and thought, that was me. You have to do it. Campaigning takes a lot out of you, and as long as you are in office, you are never not campaigning. I shook my head and thought, ‘I don’t miss it a bit.’ ” VV

It’s time to replace the car, and where is the money for that?” Right now, Brevard County is in a crisis of need to replace items and equipment after years of lean budgets. “When the items were purchased, there was never any money placed in the budget to replace them, Smith said.” Not surprisingly, Job One for Smith is to spearhead

eme DRY CLEAN eXtrSuits • Uniforms • Dresses

The local nonprofit foundation Miles Freeberg Foundation will host the fifth and final Miles for Myles 5K run/walk in memory of Myles Freeberg. The event will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 at Viera High School with registration at 7 a.m. Myles Freeberg was a scholar athlete and the only male valedictorian in the Class of 2011 at Viera High School. He was on his way to have his senior picture taken when he was hit by a distracted driver. He died the next day, on July 8, 2010, from injuries suffered in the accident.

The first Miles for Myles 5K was organized by Hastings Kofkin as a school project. Held on Jan. 8, 2011, the event raised funds for scholarships in Myles’ memory. Since then, the Myles Freeberg Foundation has awarded 47 scholarships and 12 internships to Brevard County high school seniors to help them realize their goal of pursuing a higher education. The event is open to walkers and runners of all ages and is not timed. Registration is $25. For more information and to register for the 5K, go to mylesfreebergfoundation.org or call 321-242-8945. Gourmet grocer The Fresh Market to sprout in Suntree this fall BY MIKE GAFFEY

The white sign posted at Wickham Road and Jordan Blass Drive tantalizes passing motorists with the question, “Guess Who’s t Coming to Town.” The answer is The Fresh Market. The Greenville, N.C.-based gourmet supermarket chain plans to open its first Brevard County location on the east side of Wickham Road at Jordan Blass Drive this fall. In December, the company announced on its website that a lease agreement had been signed for the property. The proposed 21,000-square-foot specialty grocer would anchor Pineda Landings, a new 50,000-square-foot retail center to be built at the 17.5-acre site. An additional 29,000 square feet of Class “A” retail space would be available at the center, which would have 274 parking spaces, according to a Portable Document Format (PDF) by Orlando-based real estate advisory firm BishopBeale. “This will be the first Fresh Market in all of Brevard County,” stated Jill Rose, vice president of retail services for BishopBeale, which will break ground soon on the

of how many jobs might be created at The Fresh Market, but other locations, including a new store in Plantation, have hired about 90 employees.

Founded in 1982, The Fresh Market tries to create the look and feel of a European-style openair market stocked with fresh meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables and hard-to-find items from around the globe. Visitors can enjoy classical music and free samples of coffee while they shop. The Fresh Market stores offer more than 30 whole bean coffee brands and a large selection of decaffeinated blends, a deli stocked with a variety of meats and more than 200 domestic and imported VIERA VOICE MIKE GAFFEY

COMMUNITY Crest Cleaners in Viera hosts radio show, toy drive BY KATIE PARSONS

Families throughout Brevard County had a happier holiday season as a result of the Toys for Kids drive and local business Crest Cleaners was a co-sponsor. Started in 1995 by local WAOA-FM DJ Timmy Vee, the nonprofit group never turns a family away that applies for the program meant to provide gifts for children ranging to 10 years old. Toys for Kids brought in 20,000 toys directly through the organization this year. Another 6,000 toys were collected at drop-off locations. The 11 locations of Crest Cleaners in Brevard County served as drop-off points for toys, including the Viera spot at 5525 Porada Dr. that just opened in June. “We’ve had a great turnout of toys at this location,” said Keith Houston, owner of Crest Cleaners. “We really enjoy participating year after year at all of our locations, and seeing the community’s generosity.” Collection started the day after Thanksgiving and ran until Dec. 9. From there, toys at drop-off spots were

Senior Safari at Brevard Zoo is your staycation vacation destination

Viera Voice |January 2015

The Timmy Vee Show was present at two Crest Cleaners locations on different days of the toy drive in order to promote it and encourage locals to stop by with their donations. The final day of donation drop offs, the radio show set up in the parking lot of Crest Cleaners’ Viera location. “We provide three to five toys per family to make sure that everyone has a great Christmas,” said WAOA’s Cheree Carter, Timmy Vee’s co-host. “The older kids get bikes, with helmets. We have a lot of generous people in this area who make these holidays really great for the families who apply.” Though the cut-off age is 10, Carter says that older kids are not left out when families apply on behalf of the younger siblings. “We don’t ask for a lot of information from the families, but take them at their word,” Carter said. “We focus on distributing all of the generous donations that this community provides.” Though the toy drop offs begin after Thanksgiving, the organization accepts donations year-round. Close your eyes and visualize your favorite vacation destination of all time. Now open your eyes and get ready to recreate that scene at the wildly popular Senior Safari Boomer Guide Expo at the Brevard Zoo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. The event is the release party for the 2015 edition of the popular Boomer Guide, an award-winning publication with interesting stories and listings of places to shop, eat, play, live and volunteer, as well as a comprehensive array of nonprofit services for the boomer and senior population in general, and veterans in particular. Brevard Zoo is sponsoring the event with free entry to the zoo for attendees 55 and over. Senior Life newspaper will get the party started with live steel drum music on entering the zoo to set the mood for a Caribbean Beach Party. Models from the 2015 Boomer Guide will be dressed in their favorite vacation attire, many in a cruise theme from the main photo shoot at Port Canaveral, nearly the busiest vacation port in the world. “Once again, our readers have the greatest ideas,” said Jill Blue-Gaines, CEO of expo producer Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes the Boomer Guide, Senior Life, Viera Voice, Viera MD and the Charlie Corbeil Birding Guide. “Someone came up to me at an event and said, ‘You know, we love living on the Space Coast and being able to pick up and travel the world when we want, so you should have a vacation party theme.’ So there you have it.” The boomer and senior models, recruited from Senior Life readership, will discover at the expo which of them made the cover. Photographed by the renowned Keith Betterley of Betterley Photographic, the cover, as well as the publication overall, routinely wins top awards from the North American Mature Publishers Association. At the expo, attendees can enjoy exciting exhibits, renew their wedding vows in advance of Valentine’s Day, dance to multiple live music performances, enjoy other entertainment, foods and refreshments. Wellness experts will be on hand to encourage simple, positive life habits to gain the most out of life. Alarmingly, this reptile is merging north — a 12-foot python recently was captured in Port St. Lucie where local cats disappeared. The panther (cougar) helps to limit the number of pigs and raccoons. Invariably, the panther is misidentified with the bobcat, but the long tail of the panther and the short tail of the bobcat differentiate these species. Furthermore, the panther is massive. The black bear may include small mammals, carrion, and seasonal berries in its diet. If the need arises, it is cannibalistic. Its sense of smell spans one mile;

pets. When food is scarce, a coyote may pursue a jogger or a child. It is a member of the dog family and is capable of mating with a dog. This canine releases a distinctive howl which signals the gathering of the pack or delivers a territorial warning. The wild pig is bold in large herds. Often, stray dogs are at risk. It destroys crops and seemingly harrows manicured lawns. In 1540, this pig was introduced to Florida (near present-day Tampa) by Hernando de Soto. Today, the immense number of wild pigs in Florida is second to Texas. Indeed, predation is not automatically detrimental. When it controls population in the wild, it is convenient. However, because of ongoing land development, some apex predators are coerced to live near humans. Will the fittest survive? VV

Setting the tone for the New Year’s resolutions changes — things we would like to suggest and try to implement in a group, community, Marcia Booth town and so on. President & No matter what Founder, we include in our lists, they are Recycle Brevard improvements that really matter and are important And so we passed the to us, but the most important craziness of the end of thing about resolutions is the year and arrived at that it starts with us. 2015. It is a brand new We are the agents of year, a chance to start change. We have the power fresh, a clean slate. We can to decide on what to devote concentrate on our plans time and effort. Some items for the future and work on may be easier to realize our New Year’s resolutions. than others, but if they are Ah, the resolutions … important enough to be on the conscious exercise of that list, they should not be choosing what to do to make overlooked or skipped. We things better and defining should find ways to get them our priorities for the year to become reality. and beyond. That may be easier to do Resolutions may include with our personal items as personal changes — things we have full control of the we want to change in changes, when and how to ourselves, or collective implement them, but it does

not mean that collective items are impossible to achieve. We may need to take baby steps and join forces with others who have the same (or similar) items on their list so we have a higher chance of seeing those come to fruition. For example, this year a project to build a rail extension in Brevard County is being considered. The page that gives an overview of the project states that “The Canaveral Port Authority plans to file a request with the Surface Transportation Board (Board) for authority to construct and operate approximately 11 miles of new rail line to Port Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida. The proposed Port Canaveral Rail Extension would also utilize approximately 17 miles of existing rail line at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s

John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) to make a connection with a main line of the Florida East Coast Railway. The proposed rail line would begin near the Port’s North Cargo Area, extend west over the Banana River, enter KSC on Merritt Island south of Kars Park, and then turn north through KSC grounds where it would connect with KSC’s existing rail line. The construction and operation of this proposed project has the potential to result in significant environmental impacts; therefore, the Board’s Office of Environmental Analysis (OEA) has determined that the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is appropriate pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).” Protecting our environment is high on my list as it is on the list

of other individuals in our community. Therefore, one of the items on our list this year may very well be to see how we can guarantee that the best decision for the community and the environment is made in regards to this rail extension plan: one item; one group sticking together to see that through. Things like that have the positive side effect of bringing people together. When people come together, unifying their voice, they also intensify that voice and that may get us a step closer to crossing off important items on our list. The beginning of the year is a time full of hope, when bad experiences stay behind and dreams become a possibility in the shape of resolutions. We unite and set the tone of our own future through the items we include on our lists. I already made my list, what about you? VV

proposed that the building be limited to only one story, no more than 15 feet high. Maria Hernandez, chairwoman of the board of supervisors of the Baytree Community Development District, urged commissioners to delay a vote until the district could meet with the credit union to address buffer and traffic concerns. “There are children getting on and off the school bus there and there are some safety factors involved,” she said. Commissioner Curt Smith, whose District 4 includes Baytree, said he saw no reason not to vote on the zoning change, saying the credit union is “clean industry” that will bring hundreds of jobs to the community at minimal cost to the county. “I’ve spoken with the developers and I’m impressed with their willingness to work with the residents, and I’ve spoken with residents and I’m very impressed with their desire to work with the developers,” Smith said. “We have a very good business, we have a good business plan, we have a good neighbor.” The credit union still must return with a binding development agreement for the county to review, Planning and Zoning Enforcement manager Cindy Fox said. “This is not the last time we’ll see them. They have to come back to us on a couple of issues,” Commissioner Andy Anderson said. For more information on this and other District 4 issues, call Smith’s aide Pat Woodard at 321-633-2044 or email patrick.woodard@ brevardcounty.us. See related story, page 27. VV
