With symbolic shovelfuls of dirt, the Washington Nationals buried any fading hopes that the Major League Baseball team might remain at Space Coast Stadium for spring training. Nationals owner Mark Lerner and general manager Mike Rizzo joined executives of the Houston Astros, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and local governmental officials in a ceremonial groundbreaking Nov. 9 for The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, a $144 million facility in West Palm Beach that will be spring training home to the Nationals and Astros starting in 2017. Washington will play its final spring training schedule in Viera in 2016. The Nationals had played preseason ball in Viera since Se habla Español Evening and Saturday hours available

The Washington Nationals will play their final spring training schedule at Space Coast Stadium in Viera in 2016.

2003, when the team was the Montreal Expos. After the 2016 season, Houston will move from its spring training facilities in Kissimmee. The teams will play in a new 6,500-seat stadium that will be part of a 160-acre complex between Haverhill Road and Military Trail near Interstate 95 and 45th Street in West Palm Beach. Both teams will have their own practice fields and training facilities at the complex, which is scheduled to be completed by January 2017, according to MLB.com. The Nationals and Astros will now be closer to three other squads: the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter, and the New York Mets, who train in Port St. Lucie. Viera’s remoteness required the Nationals to take long bus trips to play other teams. “It’s clear that you need a certain number of teams, kind of a critical mass, in order to have spring training in this part of Florida,” Manfred told MLB.com. “I give (Astros’ owner) Jim Crane and Mark Lerner a ton of credit for finding a location, getting the project done and ensuring the future of spring training baseball in Southeast Florida.” The Nationals’ move leaves Brevard County without a MLB team here in spring for the first time since 1992. The 8,100-seat Space Coast Stadium was built for the Marlins, who played their first preseason in Viera in 1994 after training at Cocoa Expo in 1993. In 2002, the Marlins and Montreal Expos switched spring training sites. The

Expos trained in Viera in 2003 and 2004 before becoming the Nationals in 2005. Before the Marlins arrived, Cocoa Expo hosted the expansion Houston Colt 45’s for the team’s first spring training in 1964. The team returned as the Houston Astros in 1965 and trained in Cocoa until 1984, when the Astros moved to Kissimmee. Anticipating that the Nationals would move, Brevard County officials in August reached a 20-year lease agreement with the United States Specialty Sports Association to move its headquarters from Kissimmee to Space Coast Stadium after the MLB team leaves. The nonprofit amateur sports organization plans to host 175 days of youth sporting events a year at the stadium and nearby fields along Stadium Parkway. The USSSA presents events in a dozen amateur sports, including baseball, fastand slow-pitch softball and basketball. The lease agreement leaves in question the future of the Brevard County Manatees, a Class A Florida State League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers and a stadium tenant since 1994. The Manatees already have discussed leaving Viera after the Nationals depart. Plans to move the team to Rollins College in Winter Park fell through in 2014, and Melbourne commissioners killed a plan earlier this year to build a smaller stadium in downtown Melbourne. The team also has approached Palm Bay about the possibility of erecting a stadium at U.S. 1 and Port Malabar Boulevard. VV

Charity begins on the 50-yard line BY GEORGE WHITE

Dan Hancock, founder of the men’s group JustBeCAUSE, organized the Feast on the 50 event held in November as a way to gather friends to break bread and practice charity as a good example to their kids. “We are right now in the baby steps phase for JustBeCAUSE. We’re trying to grow up with this thing. We’ve been doing the men’s group events in the summers with the NFL players and this is my first branching out to do something like this,” he said. The men’s events have been meaningful and well attended, but Hancock said he was left with the feeling that the group was now big enough to make more of a difference for the community at large. “This year in particular it has grown, so now I feel like there’s movement with it. That’s kind of the neat thing about JustBeCAUSE. I can kind of pick and choose,” he said. The aim of the Feast on the 50 event was to support families in need by collecting food for the Thanksgiving Basket Brigade at an unusual location for Thanksgiving dinner. “I knew I wanted to do some kind of donation type of thing. I wanted our kids to have a sense of service. Because I have no idea who to give them to, I wanted to attach it to somebody big and support them,” he said. Feast on the 50, an idea that has been around in different forms for a few years, was appropriate for Hancock as a youth football coach for the Suntree-Viera county youth league. The tables were set up on the actual 50-yard line at Viera Regional Park field where he coaches.

VIERA VOICE George White

Feast on the 50, above, was organized by Dan Hancock, left, founder of the men’s group JustBeCAUSE.

People brought tables, chairs and food to have a feast, and extra food to give. The event also was an opportunity to collect items for care packages for service members overseas. The Viera High JROTC was contacted to help find recipients for the personal items. “I’m a football coach out here and, as hard as it is to do, I try to incorporate life skills and life thoughts. Most of the coaches at all levels try to teach beyond the Xs and Os. I coach 8 and 9 year olds. To find something for them to give back, I want them to know that if you have it good, give back,’’ Hancock said. It took two months to organize the feast, he said. “It’s definitely been a good response. The big picture is, you never know whose life you are going to make an impact on, so try to make it positive,” Hancock said. VV

If you are looking for a way to continue the spirit of giving in the New Year, there are plenty of opportunities locally. There are an estimated 265 children in foster homes in the county, and even more in group homes. The number of foster children in Florida has risen 19 percent in the past year alone. The ages with the highest demand for foster homes in Brevard are birth to 3 and 15 to 17, according to Tracey Kinsley, director of communications for Brevard Family Partnership. BFP is the only foster homelicensing organization in the county and it works with other groups to find temporary homes for the children who need them. “The age groups with the highest demand tend to fluctuate. A few years ago our highest demand group was 6 to 9, but now we are in need of foster homes for the youngest and oldest age groups,” Kinsley said. There is also a need for foster families that are able to take sibling groups. Except for rare cases, it is preferable to keep brothers and sisters in the same home, especially when they are removed from parents. “We are always looking for families that will allow us to keep sibling groups together. We know it can be

harder to take on more than one child, but it’s important to keep these kids together whenever possible,” Kinsley said. In the coming year, Kinsley says that she expects to see growth in the partnership between BFP and local organizations of faith. Since June, when BFP took recruitment initiatives inhouse, foster parent recruiter Jason Simmons has worked to strengthen ties with the faith community. “We had 85 percent of our foster parent survey respondents saying that they felt it was a calling, or something they were called upon to do,” Kinsley said. “It just makes sense to reach out even more to our churches and let them know about

the need for foster homes in Brevard.” For those who are not in a position to offer a home, but would like to help foster children, BFP accepts donations of gear, clothing and services. Some of the most helpful items include car seats and booster seats, luggage, cribs and rocking chairs. People who can provide professional services like haircuts are also in demand. “Particularly when it comes to African-American hair, we are looking for people who can donate their time and resources,” Kinsley said. To learn more about becoming a foster parent or making a donation, go to BrevardFP.org or call 321-752-4650. VV

p u p a SPORTS Wr Hawks savor run to Class 7A state title game

BY CARL KOTALA

As the clock wound down what would be the final quarter in an otherwise incredible season, Viera High football coach Kevin Mays told his players to look around and soak up their surroundings. “To end up in this place, that’s special,” Mays said. “I hope they enjoyed it.” The Hawks certainly didn’t enjoy the outcome of their Class 7A state championship game, which was won by St Thomas Aquinas, 45-10 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. But as they shook hands with a number of the fans who came by to root for them, as they collected their state runner-up medals and hugged and shook hands with the teammates they went on this magical journey with, there was a sense of accomplishment. “We’re proud that we’re here,” senior wide receiver Tre Nixon said. “To be honest, I think we’re the only group that thought we were going to be here, that this was

going to be our last game. We actually made it.” St. Thomas Aquinas, which won its ninth state

championship, was supposed to get to the Citrus Bowl. The Raiders were the topranked 7A team in the state

in the final regular-season AP ranking. The Hawks? They didn’t get a single vote, most likely because of what a number of players described as a “rollercoaster” season in which they went 6-4. Then came the playoffs, where they not only beat Harmony and Martin County, but No. 6 Lakeland and No. 3 Columbia to get to Orlando.

“It’s an accomplishment that won’t be lost on us for the rest of our lives,” quarterback Hayden Kingston said. Saying goodbye to 25 seniors won’t be easy, not only because of their talent, but also because of their leadership and the energy they brought every day. “They’re a great group of kids,” Mays said. “I’ll miss this team. We’ve got guys coming back, but this team as a whole, I’ll miss this team.” While the senior class will leave a big legacy, they will also leave behind the example they set for the younger players. Viera will have talented players coming back, plus a JV team that went undefeated for the second year in a row. The Hawks brought up a lot of those younger players toward the end of the season, so they got to experience some of that success as well. Now, they can build on it. In other words, Viera football isn’t going away anytime soon. “Oh no, no way,” senior tackle Hunter Ulrich said recently. “Especially when you’ve got coaches like we do. They’re going to have the team ready every year to go play. … I would say we’ve got the best coaching staff in the county.” VV

Rousseau makes history for Viera swim team BY CARL KOTALA

From the moment she gave it a try seven years ago, Sarah Rousseau loved diving. She liked the challenge of trying to perfect each dive. And she really liked the competition. Her coach at the time, Bill Talbot of Sunrise Springboard Diving in Satellite Beach, saw something, too. He saw the way she could point her toes and keep her legs straight. He saw her focus. “I knew right away, back then at 7, 8 years old, she was going to be a state champ someday,” Talbot said. “I knew it immediately.” Talk about being prophetic. Rousseau became the first female, and just the second person, in the history of the Viera High swimming program to win a state crown when the 15-year-old sophomore beat the field at the 2015 FHSAA state finals. Prior to that, Rousseau finished 10th in the 14-15 girls 1-meter competition at the 2015 USA Diving ATT National Diving Championships. And to think, she almost went into a different sport. “I wanted to be a gymnast,

Sarah Rousseau has been diving for seven years. The sophomore became just the second member — and first female — from the Viera High swimming team to win a state championship.

but my mom was scared I would get injured easily,” Rousseau said. “She saw a diving article in the newspaper and put me in it.” Talbot thought so much of a young Rousseau, he made her the youngest diver he

has ever taken to a national meet. Rousseau, who was 7 at the time, competed in the 9 and under division and did very well. As her skills began to grow and she started going to Sebastian to work on 3-meter

diving, Talbot knew something else. With no 3-meter diving boards in Brevard County, Rousseau was going to have to leave him. For the past two years, Rousseau has worked with coach Yaidel Gamboa of the YCF Diving Team in Orlando. Her coach at Viera High is Randy Just. Even when she’s not diving, Rousseau likes to stay active. She’s been dancing for five years and just this past month, she appeared at the King Center, playing four different roles in the “Nutcracker,” which was put on by Space Coast Ballet. She is also dual-enrolled, taking virtual high school classes while also taking courses at Eastern Florida State College. Diving practice is four hours a day, five days a week. During the summer, she trains twice a day for five days a week. That’s quite a schedule, isn’t it? “It’s hard sometimes, but it just feels normal to me since I’ve been doing it for so long,” Rousseau said. As a freshman, she opened

some eyes by finishing fifth in the state for the Hawks. In joining diver Luke Zippi (2009) as the only Hawks to win a state championship, Rousseau showed she had matured not just physically, but mentally as well. “I’ve just improved some and then knowing how to focus on each dive instead of the whole competition,” she said. “I didn’t know how to do that last year and this year I did.” So how far can she go? Rousseau said she would like to get a scholarship to go to college. But Talbot can see her having a shot to make the 2020 U.S. Olympic team. “With the dives she’s doing now, if she continues on the pace she’s at, she’s got a good possibility of making it up the ladder and getting to an Olympic Trial at least,” he said. Right now, Rousseau is preparing for another round of competitions that can help her qualify for the nationals. Her self-confidence after winning the state title has grown. “I was happy that I won and I was happy because I made my coach(es) proud,” Rousseau said. VV

The Viera High boys basketball team that will take the floor in January will look nothing like the group that people saw at the beginning of last month. And the Viera girls? Well, they figure to be better, too. In other words, it figures to be a pretty exciting month for Viera basketball. “I think we have a chance to win a lot of games, but we really have to think about it, and really come out working hard,” said senior forward Katie Smith. Hard work is just part of what new girls coach Brett Fink is stressing to his players. A former women’s basketball assistant coach at UCF, Fink joined the school as a history teacher last February before taking over the Viera girls program this season following Jamie Risberg’s decision to retire from coaching. “I think the biggest thing we’re trying to do is create a culture of responsibility, where they’re responsible for their play and they’re responsible for understanding what they should do. “We have three core values that I’ve demanded of all my teams, and that’s that they play their hardest, they do things right and they stick together.” Senior Miracle Simon, a transfer from Lake Charles, La., has been averaging around 20 points a game. Maddi Sadowski has been solid at guard and other key players include Smith, freshmen Corrin Flajole and Tyrese Gonzalez and sophomore Caitlin Hoffhine “They’re learning,” Fink said. “They’re getting better every game.” While the girls should improve as the season goes on and they get more comfortable playing under Fink’s system — and with each other — there is no question the boys team will be better with the addition of several players who were on Viera’s state runner-up

football team. That list includes Jamyson Boyd, Donovan Jackson and Trey Schaneville, who led the Hawks in steals, assists and 3-point shooting percentage last season. “Now I know how Cocoa and those traditional powers feel,” Viera boys coach Terry Parks said. “Their football players go so far into the playoffs, and when they come back around Christmas time, they look like a totally different team. “That’s a good problem to have, though. The young guys are getting experience. Our

football team’s successful. It’s a win-win situation.” Senior Darren Rodney, who has been averaging close to a double-double, said he was looking forward to the football players coming back to give the Hawks more firepower. In the meantime, the fact that the younger players have been getting more playing time should benefit the Hawks in the future. “It’s good that they’re getting it early, so next year, it’s going to be even better,” Rodney said. “Next year is going to be scary.” VV

It’s not hard to look at the wrestlers Viera High has at the lower weights and see why the Hawks figure to be pretty strong this season. From Gavin Johnson at 120 pounds, to Darius Darr at 126, Aron Mahl at 132, Jonathan Conlin at 138 and Caleb Harris at 145, the Hawks have five experienced wrestlers lined up to give their opponents fits. “That’s a good, meaty lineup right there,” Viera coach Jim Gentile said. Viera High’s Gavin Johnson, top, is an experienced wrestler who has a chance to qualify for this year’s state tournament. Johnson won this match against Cocoa Beach by pin.

Brunotte (152) and Blake Ward (285) also on board, the Hawks have a chance to contend for the Cape Coast Conference title again if they can solidify their lineup. “We have five or six solid guys right now from last year and then we have a lot of holes [to fill] with new guys,” Gentile said. Senior Ronnie LaMacchia, a first-year wrestler, will go at 195 for Viera this season. Also new to the sport are sophomore Lou Fox (113) and senior Anthony Darienzo (160). Sophomores Daniel Henderson (152) and Andy Saraka (160) wrestled on the JV team last year and should also contribute. Darr, who went to the Class 3A regionals last year and came within one victory of qualifying for the state tournament, believes the fact that the Hawks have nine seniors on their roster will give them a big advantage, much like his freshman year when Viera won the CCC title. The Hawks have struggled in the two years since that title, but those days are likely over. “When I was a freshman, a

bunch of seniors graduated and we had to kind of re-start the team from the bottom up,” Darr said. “Now, we’re kind of back at the top, and I would say we have a chance of winning Cape Coast this year because we have a lot of seniors who have been here since freshman year.” Darr, a senior, said he and the other wrestlers got together twice a week during the summer to keep themselves sharp for this season. After coming so close last year, there is no question what his individual goal is. “I want to go to states this year,” he said. Gentile believes Darr, Johnson, Conlin, Harris and Mahl all have a shot at ending Viera’s two-year drought of sending wrestlers to the state tournament. Viera will be competing at the 2A level this season and figures to get stronger as the year goes on. “We’re definitely not where we want to be right now, but with the guys we have in the room … they’re liking the sport,” Gentile said. “They’re going to get better. As a coaching staff, we’ve just got to push them.” VV

Holy Trinity basketball teams have bright futures BY CARL KOTALA

This has a chance to be a very special season for the Holy Trinity boys and girls basketball teams, but for different reasons. The boys, coming off a Final Four appearance, believe they have the talent to make another deep playoff run with a young lineup that will only get better. Holy Trinity’s girls team, meanwhile, has a new coach and the optimism that after years of struggling, they have a chance to turn things around. “We’re getting there,” new girls coach Jay Castillo said.

“We’re beginning to gel. For me, we’ve got to get better at finishing. We give ourselves some good opportunities. We need to put the ball in the basket. “We’re solid defenders. I think they enjoy playing defense. That’s where we want to be. They play well as a team.” The Tigers’ improved defense and rebounding ability were certainly evident during a 42-36 win over Cocoa last month that brought Holy Trinity’s record at the time to 6-5. Led by veteran senior guard Alisha Pound, the

Tigers have a lineup with a nice mixture of younger players that includes junior guard Sadie Girard, junior forward Natalia Walcott, sophomore forward Kate Starkey and senior guard Victoria Salvatore. Pound said there are several differences between this year’s Tigers and teams of the past, including the fact that Castillo has been stressing defense and practices have been tougher than years past. The team also has better chemistry. “This year, the players are closer together,” Pound said. “Last year, we were kind of separated. [This year] we can connect with each other.” Holy Trinity’s boys team graduated six seniors from last year’s state Final Four team and has only one senior on this year’s squad — Josh Porteus. But there is plenty of room for optimism with a young core that includes freshmen guards Seth Coleman and Tyrel Harris, sophomore guards Jashaun Corbin, Brandon Schwab and Tyler Forde along with transfers Carter Wagner (sophomore guard), Corey Kaplan (junior forward) and Rey Idowu (junior center). “I think we have a really good core group,” boys coach Steve Henderson said. “We’re just trying to teach them how to practice hard, how to compete and then try to get them ready for the playoffs.” Porteus, the only player who saw major minutes

At 10 a.m. from the main stage, Smith will announce the winners of the video contest from the Dec. 5 Ocean-Reef-Beach Festival in Satellite Beach that drew 8,000 attendees. The winning 30-second films, many shot with affixed Go Pro cameras, will be used for conservation public service announcements. Smith and other seasoned fisher-folk volunteers will teach youth and their parents and other adults the basics of fishing safety, and then they will teach the tricks to casting, using colorful Hula Hoops as targets rather than a typical waterfront. “We call it fishing, not

Junior Achievement get students fiscally fit as well as the value of an education and future economic benefits of staying in school. At the high school level, volunteers challenge students to start their own businesses and teach more about concepts relating to entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work readiness. “Placing a community member within the school creates a real-life connection with the kids, so they can make the connection between the materials and somebody who is successful

in the community,” ConroyBaiter said. On March 5, the local branch marks the 30th anniversary of inducting local business laureates into its Business Hall of Fame, Conroy-Baiter said. This year’s inductees will be Harris Corp. CEO Bill Brown and retired attorney Bill Potter, who sits on several boards. JA is looking for event sponsors, she added. Viera High School teacher Kathy Brown talks to students taking part in “Be Entrepreneurial,” a program for juniors and seniors offered by Junior Achievement of the Space Coast. BY MIKE GAFFEY

The business of Junior Achievement of the Space Coast is teaching young people about business. At Viera High School, the local JA branch currently is offering “Be Entreprenerial” classes, taught by Scott Sorensen of Sorensen Moving & Storage and Jeff Piersall of Space Coast Business. Student teams from those classes will compete in the upcoming Business Plan Challenge, a contest similar to TV’s “Shark Tank.” One of the teams is working on helping blind people play video games by enhancing the games’ audio and creating special controllers for sightimpaired users. “It’s just providing new opportunities for people who would not be able to play,” said Viera High student Kelly Davis, one of 80 juniors and seniors taking part in the Be Entrepreneurial program

in teacher Kathy Brown’s Academy of Business and Finance class. “I feel that’s the goal of an entrepreneur: to give people a chance to do something they wouldn’t have been able to unless someone came up with the idea in the first place.” Junior Achievement offers volunteer-delivered programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade that foster workreadiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. “We really try to reach kids while they’re young and give them multiple exposures to the way the money world works,” said Anne ConroyBaiter, president of Junior Achievement of the Space Coast. Junior Achievement reached 9,230 Brevard students in the 2014-15 school year and is on track to surpass that figure significantly during the current school year, ConroyBaiter said.

Volunteer instructors are typically business professionals, college students, community members or parents who make five to seven visits to schools, offering 30- to 45-minute classroom sessions and providing students with Junior Achievement materials. Elementary school students learn concepts of basic business and economics and how education is relevant to the real world. Junior Achievement volunteers teach middle schoolers the economics of business, personal finance and career exploration,

Change the world one day at a time through children’s calendar sales

BY LINDA WIGGINS

Wildfires are raging across Indonesia and they have not gone unnoticed in Suntree. A group of youngsters who formed a conservation group a year ago have expanded their local efforts worldwide, to the protection of endangered orangutans whose habitat is disappearing from the illegal land clearing to make way for increased production of palm oil. The Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots group will sell a

special calendar, Primate Connections, showcasing primates, to benefit these orangutans, at the Suntree Master Homeowners Association booth at the Saturday, Jan. 9 Color Me Healthy 5K & Family Fitness Festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., after the 8 a.m. 5K; see page 19. The youngsters debuted a video and presented information at the SMHA Dec. 12 holiday movie festival, also at Jack Mahon Park, at 7550 Spyglass Hill Road in Suntree. Quest Elementary School

fifth-grader Vinn Riggenbach has a message for consumers and charitable givers alike. “We want people who use palm oil to know that it might make orangutans extinct because their habitat is being burned to produce it. We want them to buy the calendar, and download the app that lets them know what products they might be using that have palm oil in them, and to let them know about products that use sustainable palm oil instead.” Justin Cole started the Roots & Shoots club after meeting with conservation legend Jane Goodall, founder of the clubs. Through a connection made

at Brevard Zoo, he contacted the producer of the calendars and convinced them to devote all the proceeds directly to the orangutan cause. “They even contacted the Jane Goodall Institute and told them what we are doing,” Cole said of his hero. “Her Institute is helping too. They said it was all because of us.” His mother, SMHS board member Julie Cole, said the local effort is making a global impact. “Imagine that, just because this small group of children in our community had an idea and took action, the sales of this calendar all over the world are being directed to

this cause, raising awareness and funds.” Suntree resident Addison Buck, a third grader at Freedom 7 Elementary School, was undaunted during a meeting at which fellow members Riley Riggenbach, Mackenzie Buck, Mark Adams, Gabe Shelton and Sienna Shelton brainstormed how to get the word out about their project. “Don’t forget, anyone can change the world.” For more information or to purchase a calendar for $22 through the local Roots & Shoots club, go to primateconnections.com/ calendar/r&s1. SCHOOL

Holy Trinity students recognized for their work BY CARL KOTALA

Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy students are making a name for themselves not only in Brevard County, but across the country. Freshman Soy Choi was one of 30 national finalists who competed at the Broadcom MASTERS science and engineering fair in California’s Silicon Valley recently. Not only did she receive a second-place award in Engineering, she also received a heavenly prize. On top of that, Soy and her younger sister, Ellen, have each received honors in the performing arts. Cece Perkins, Adiya McDougal, Christy Chadwick and Katy Wacaster represented the school at the Florida Vocal Association’s Solo and Ensemble music performance assessment with three of them being honored as Excellent and one Superior. Wacaster will move on to the state Solo and Ensemble competition in the spring. Then there was senior Stuti Mishra, who was recognized at the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce Breakfast of Champions in December as the Young Adult of the Month.

Holy Trinity seventh-grader Ellen Choi, left, and her older sister, Soy, both received a Superior score in String Solo and Ensemble as first-time participants in the District 10 Florida Orchestra Association’s Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment.

“It was really surprising because there were lots of business people there and I got to meet a lot of them,” Mishra said. “Just listening to them speak and just being in their presence and receiving that [award] was truly an honor.” Mishra gained national fame as an eighth grader when she

finished second at the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee, but that’s hardly where her story ends. In addition to founding “Pronounce It!” a monthly library program designed to teach English pronunciation to immigrants, she also hosts “Saturdays with Stuti” at the West Melbourne Library where every other week she teaches the nuances of spelling and language to children and adults. “We’ll talk about pasta words and say why they’re spelled the way they are. Like fettuccelle, why does it have two ‘t’s’ and two ‘c’s,’” Mishra said. “It’s because it’s Italian. For the kids, to make it fun, we talk about food, flowers, games, animals and the languages behind them.” Holy Trinity Director of College Counseling, Alison Bell, called the 17-year-old “one of the most exceptional young women I have worked with in my 20-plus years in education.” Not only is Mishra on track to be Holy Trinity’s valedictorian, but with a weighted GPA of 4.85, she has the chance to have the highest GPA ever earned by a Holy Trinity student. The Choi sisters, meanwhile, are on track to become highly decorated musicians. Soy, who plays the violin and the viola, earned a spot in the prestigious All-State Concert Orchestra for 9th and 10th graders. It’s the highest performing ensemble in the state for string students in her grade.

She also earned a Superior score in String Solo and Ensemble as a first-time participant in the District 10 Florida Orchestra Association’s Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment. Ellen Choi, a seventh grader, also earned a Superior score and earned a spot in the AllState Middle School Honors Orchestra as a violinist. The 12-year-old, who has been playing the violin for two years, initially wanted to do it because she was “jealous” of her sister. Now, she has a real affinity for not just the violin, but what a skilled performer can accomplish. “I thought it was pretty amazing when I was young how violinists and musicians can create a totally new sound, like a new language with just one [instrument],” Ellen Choi said.

Language was the basis of Soy Choi’s science research project, which studied the effect bilingualism has on the cognitive development of adolescents. “I had started the project because I grew up as a bilingual, and I remember not really enjoying learning a second language when I was younger,” said Soy, who also speaks Korean. “Nowadays, I find it sort of useful. I was wondering how the capability to speak two languages had on student’s academic success.” It was because of that project that Soy was chosen from among 300 semifinalists to travel to the Silicon Valley for the eight-day competition. The students were put into teams and judged based on how well they could solve different stem-related problems with their teammates, how well they collaborated, and in what areas they showed knowledge. As part of the trip, they got to tour a Tesla factory, Google and to go out on the San Francisco Bay with members of the Marine Science Institute. “We got to analyze plankton and do different experiments on the boat,” Soy said. “And we were actually lucky enough to catch a baby shark. That was an interesting experience.” As part of her second-place prize, Soy Choi received $3,000, an iPad and a very special prize. “I thought the most interesting award I got was a professor at MIT actually awarded us with a planet named after us at the Lincoln Laboratory at MIT,” Soy said. “Getting to have my own planet was one of the best awards.” VV

The Kennedy Middle School orchestra greeted guests as they came to the school, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last month.

County School Board, praised the work of Kennedy principal Richard Meyers. “This school represents the best of the best in the county, in my opinion,” Henderson told the crowd. “The students represent our county well wherever they go.” Kennedy, which has earned 13 consecutive “A” grades — and is expecting to stretch that to 14 in a row — has had success through the years not only academically, but with its athletic teams, orchestra and its chorus. Meyers, who has been at Kennedy for more than 20 years, is proud of the way the school has grown during his tenure, particularly on the academic side where students are prepared for the next level and beyond. “We’ve seen a lot of changes in the programs and the systems we’ve been able to offer our students, the biggest of which have been our AVID program and the

Cambridge program,” Meyers said. “Both are very rigorous and are college-oriented programs that prepare them and put them on a collegebound track.” Workman, in his speech, praised schools like Kennedy for helping raise the overall ranking of Florida’s public education system. It has certainly been a tremendous 50 years for the school. As Meyers told the crowd: “With the accomplishments our students have made, and our staff, over the last 50 years, we can only imagine what it will be like the next time Kennedy celebrates an anniversary.” VV

From decade-themed hallways to performances by the chorus, the orchestra and a dance and aerobics class, the 50th anniversary of Kennedy Middle School was clearly driven by its students. The school, which serves Viera families west of Murrell Road, celebrated its 50th year last month with a number of alumni and invited guests from throughout the county. That included Brevard County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Desmond Blackburn, who told the crowd: “The excellence of this school and of this community hits you like a ton of bricks right when you walk through the front door, and that does not happen by accident. “It happens by everyone in here pouring themselves into this school. Your excellence is evident. I’m so proud of you. Congratulations.” Also on hand were Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, Ritch Workman — who represents the 52nd district in the Florida House of Representatives — along with local government officials and several school principals, including Mike Alba of Viera High School. The Kennedy orchestra greeted guests as they filed into the school and during the celebration ceremony, the school’s chorus performed songs from five decades. There was also a fashion show that coincided with the school’s dance and aerobics class doing numbers representing popular dances from the past to the present. Viera teen launches nonprofit for STEM learning BY KATIE PARSONS

Slayde Kerner is quite the tech-savvy businessman. At the age of 14, he’s already the founder of a tech nonprofit that gives local kids learning and leadership opportunities. Kerner’s latest endeavor is CraftingEducation, a nonprofit, charitable business that will open its doors for students in January in Suntree Station Plaza at 7025 N. Wickham Road. The mission of the CraftingEducation Academy is to make Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning fun and accessible for kids just like Kerner. Normally socalled “coding camps” and other tech-heavy workshops can cost families $1,000-plus. “We have a main location and also travel to schools in order to teach through our mobile unit. This gives all students the opportunity to take part in the program, especially underprivileged students,” Kerner said.

At 12, Kerner began teaching his classmates the technical ins and outs of popular console and mobile application games and launched a MinecraftEdu club in his last year at Viera Charter School in eighth grade. When he started ninth grade at Viera High School this fall, teacher Heather James encouraged Kerner to take his talent and teaching abilities to the next level. In addition to classes like MinecraftEdu, the Wickham Road location will offer a 3D printing course. “CraftingEducation gives the kids an opportunity to work with many different programs like Adobe, 3D printing, MinecraftEdu, web design and much more in the near future,” Kerner said. Initially, the classes at CraftingEducation will begin as after-school courses, but there will eventually be some school-hour options for home-schooled students. There will be summer camp options too. The CraftingEducation plan

also includes a leadership academy for students ages 12 to 17 who will essentially learn the software from Kerner and then be qualified

to teach the courses. Students in the leadership academy who complete the year’s duties will receive a partial college scholarship, funded by

the nonprofit. Kerner’s sister, Seville Kerner, 12, will also be instrumental in the leadership academy training. She helped him start the MineCraftEdu club at Viera Charter and still is a student there. “It’s really nice to have a kid as an instructor, it’s like having a mentor,” Susan Sears, Kerner’s mother, said. “There’s more momentum and they can all learn together that way.” CraftingEducation will host a black tie gala fundraiser at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30 at Tradewinds Restaurant at the Duran Golf Club in Viera. Brevard Brass will provide the entertainment and there will be opportunities for prizes. Tickets are $55 each and can be purchased by visiting Eventbrite. com and searching “CraftingEducation.” For more information on donating to CraftingEducation, or enrolling in the courses, go to craftingeducation. com or the Facebook page CraftingEducation Academy, or call 321-926-4848. The Suntree Elementary School Community Fall Festival Nov. 21 raised $6,000 toward a new playground, providing the final amount of funding needed. The old playground demolished, the new playground will likely be installed during spring break. The process involves review and approval of the design within the school district, approval of the desired supplier, Advanced Recreational Concepts, and manufacturing and shipping of the equipment. “Spring break seemed the most likely and the most unobtrusive time, with regard to the state testing window, to schedule installation,” school bookkeeper Patty Roissier said. An additional $4,500 raised from the festival’s silent auction of donated prize packages will help teachers purchase needed items in their classrooms. VV

Parental involvement in education pays dividends for life BY GEORGE WHITE

Parental involvement plays a crucial role in education, but it is not something that happens on its own. Busy parents need to carve out time for the good of their kids, according to Ralph Williams Elementary School guidance counselor Rani Urbanski, formerly a teacher. “It’s my first year as guidance counselor. It’s my first year out of the classroom. I decided to get my master’s degree in guidance counseling. I wanted to see what kind of opportunities were outside the classroom. I wanted to see how else I could help kids and families,’’ she said. Her tips to strengthen the parent-student bond in the New Year: Ask open-ended questions specific to their school day and classroom happenings. What was your favorite part of the day? Who did you play with? What reading centers did you work in today? What exciting or new thing did you learn today? What books did your teacher read to you? Who was a good friend to you today? Who did you help today?

Examples of quality time spent together can include: • Have your child sort laundry, making up a story about a “laundry monster” who causes mismatches. • While eating dinner, ask your teen a question to stretch his/her imagination, such as “If you were the smartest person on Earth, what would you use your intelligence to do? • Have your child pick out three low-sugar snacks (less than 10 grams) during a grocery run.

• When driving in the car, ask your younger child to find the letters of the alphabet in signs you pass. With the teens, ask them to help you calculate how many miles per gallon you are getting with each car you drive. • At the ATM or bank, help your child determine how long it would take to save $2,000 if you saved $5 each week in a bank account. Ask your child what they would do with the money. • While shooting hoops or playing cards, ask

questions like “How did recess go today” or “How was your science test?” • When making a salad for dinner, let your child choose the ingredients. “It’s a matter of being involved in your children’s everyday lives, because you have a big impact on their decision-making skills,” Urbanski said. “Parents are moral compasses. on Spyglass Hill Road as the community comes together to commend the team. The 11 a.m. presentation is also the community’s opportunity to meet and congratulate the Hawks players for making Hawks football history by going all the way to the state competition at the Citrus Bowl Dec. 11, including the Hawks cheerleaders and Hawks band for their vital inspiration. “Families in the Viera/ Suntree area invest in their own education, invest in their own careers, and they love their children to pieces,” Gallagher said. “So they turn around and invest their time, talent and other resources into their child’s education, and athletics is a very important part of that.” The event within the event is the perfect opportunity to showcase the Viera/Suntree culture that has created the champion-making academic and athletic machine that is VHS. The 2,000-student school is entering the second half of its 10th year, marking its 10year milestone this fall. “A strong family is what creates a strong student and

Community members can purchase healthy breakfast and lunch items from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to benefit the Suntreeheadquartered Bluewater Foundation and its efforts to strengthen families. “This charity event is to support families who take in, foster or adopt children, so we all can play a role in helping this happen,” said Gallagher, who will run in the 8 a.m. 5K, “whether it be running in the 5K or purchasing lunch, making a contribution of any sort, or ultimately being inspired to take on the mission of being one of those families who give of themselves by providing a strong, nurturing home — like the one our own children benefit from — for a child in need of one. ‘Charlie’ winners rise to greater heights BY LINDA WIGGINS

Things are heating up for ‘Charlie’ winners — that’s the nickname conservationists have given the Viera Voice Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards, given out on the eve of the Viera Wetlands Festival slated for March 19, 2016. The Charlies. The Charlie Awards. Brandon Smith went to the White House. Duane DeFreese got the dream job of a lifetime. Rodney Smith is as busy as can be getting youngsters to put down their iPads and pick up a fishing pole to enjoy the great outdoors. “You should hear them talk. They are so proud of their Charlies,” said emcee for the Charlies Vince Lamb, a cofounder of Preserve Brevard. A conservation-themed student art, photography and essay contest leads up

to the Charlies, their awards given at the Viera Wetlands Festival. The actual “Charlie Award” is the late Florida Master Naturalist’s most famous nature photo, a baby sandhill crane nestled in its mother’s back feathers, mounted on solid wood and glass. “Part of it is that The

Charlies have gone to truly deserving, accomplished people who have done great things caring for our natural assets from the St. Johns River to the beaches and beyond,” Lamb said. “The other part is that most of them knew Charlie Corbeil well as a legend in life and this is a way to keep him alive in our thoughts and hearts.” Nominations are open for the 2016 Charlie Awards. Criteria is that the person can be a volunteer or a professional, but if they hold a position, their accomplishments must be their own and not merely those of the organization they serve. After his Charlie in April, Smith received the FMSEA Service Award from the Florida Marine Science Educators Association in May for his work as the East

Central Regional Director for their organization for the last six years. He also received this year’s Keep Brevard Beautiful Educator of the Year award for environmental education. Smith won his Charlie in part for the creation of Riverwalk: A Family Park, located off U.S. 1 in Rockledge. It was during youth Marine Biology camps at Riverwalk that Smith came upon the idea for a “Biggest Reducer” program that focuses on reducing the amount of waste generated in lunches students take to school and camp. With help from a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Smith has expanded his program into Brevard County Schools and earned the recent invitation to the White House. Plastic bags, peril to

marine life, are collected and woven into useful mats. DeFreese, formerly an environmental consultant from Indialantic, now heads up the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program, tasked by the new Indian River Lagoon Council with healing the ailing lagoon. Many of the new nominations have come from Charlie winners themselves. “There are a few awards out there that reward people for doing great things in conservation that help a particular organization,” Lamb said. “But these are the only pure conservation awards that exist purely for the purpose of rewarding and inspiring others to care for our greatest natural gifts.” For more information, call or email Lamb at 321-258-5168 or vince@ vincelamb.com or go to thecharlieawards.org. Sergio’s Tacos stresses food, family and fresh ingredients BY MIKE GAFFEY

Ashlin Romero sees some familiar faces when he enters the kitchen of his newly opened Viera restaurant, Sergio’s Tacos Mexican Grill. Romero’s mother, Mary, and grandmother, Maria, can be found at the casual restaurant at the Mobil station at 5470 Murrell Road, preparing dishes based on old recipes they learned years ago while growing up in Mexico. Working with family is nothing new for Romero, who named the restaurant after his father. “I grew up in the restaurant business,” said Romero, who opened Sergio’s at the former home of one of Viera Pizza’s two locations on Nov. 11. “Since I was young they had me working with them, and that’s how I got to grow in the restaurant business.” Romero and Viera Pizza owner Mike Acosta, who runs Viera Pizza’s remaining location at 5450 Stadium Parkway, came up with the idea of opening the Mexican restaurant at Viera Pizza’s old Murrell Road location. The two felt there were too many pizza places in that area and that a different type of fare was needed.

MAB MEDICAL ASSOCIATES OF BREVARD

Now it’s Romero’s turn to run a restaurant, and from the positive reviews that Sergio’s gotten so far from customers, he’s off to a great start. “We moved to the area over 10 years ago and have been searching for a taste of our hometown, San Antonio, ever since,” recent customer Christy Martin Farias posted on Sergio’s Facebook page. “I am so glad we finally found Sergio’s, it is so delicious, authentic Mexican food.” Romero uses only fresh ingredients for all menu items, and visitors can taste the difference. “Everybody’s loving it,” he said. “They call it California style. They’re loving how they can taste the fresh ingredients. It’s very authentic.” As the name on the marquee attests, tacos are a Sergio’s specialty. Romero recommends the popular carne asada tacos with skirt steak and topped with onions and cilantro, and Al Pastor tacos with diced pork marinated with Guajillo chile and topped with onions, cilantro and pineapple, served in a handmade corn tortilla or in a hard shell or flour tortilla. “The Mexican sandwiches

are very amazing, too,” Romero said. “We’ve also got chicken or steak burritos and taco salad bowls.” Sergio’s offers catering and will add delivery service soon, Romero said. Although Romero earned a mechanical aerospace engineering degree from Florida Tech in December, he plans to focus on his restaurant for now.

Rockledge jumps at chance to add Sky Zone trampoline park BY MIKE GAFFEY

Sky Zone, the world’s first indoor trampoline park, is bouncing into Rockledge, bringing up to 125 new jobs. Joe Dillon of Fishers, Ind., plans to open a Sky Zone franchise inside a 30,000-square-foot location next door to the Aldi discount grocer shopping center at Murrell Road and Barnes Boulevard. Dillon hopes to be open in early January. At Sky Zone, visitors wearing special orange “SkySocks,” can jump and flip on wall-to-wall trampolines in a main court freestyle area, dive into a “foam zone” filled with 10,000 foam blocks, play dodgeball, and dunk basketballs from trampoline launch pads in a “SkySlam” area. Sky Zone also offers adult aerobics classes, toddler activities, and party and group event rentals. “If you walk, you can jump,” Dillon said. “We’ve got 85-year-olds who jump at our park in Evansville, Ind.” Dillon plans to add extra features at the Rockledge facility, including a threelevel ninja course inspired by the TV show “American Ninja Warrior,” a rope ladder over the foam zone and a variation on the basketball game using eight hoops. “We’re going to have more attractions than most

traditional Sky Zones right now,” he said. “We’re one of the first five parks to install a ninja course.” Dillon, who has been in the pharmaceuticals field but wanted to go into business for himself, said he got interested in Sky Zone after taking his then-3-year-old son to a franchise near his hometown. “I couldn’t get him off the trampolines,” Dillon said. “My partner approached me and asked me if I’d be interested, and I said, ‘Sure, let’s go try it out.’ ” All participants must sign a waiver before bouncing around. Sky Zone employees help ensure that jumpers follow rules and regulations. Dillon expects to hire about 100 to 125 employees, with most being of high school or college age. “It’s a big

operation,” he said. Rockledge officials contacted Sky Zone on how much they would like to have them in their community, Caroline Miller, director of marketing for Orlandobased real estate advisory firm BishopBeale, said in a statement. “Rockledge was competing with other areas of Florida including Palm Bay and St. Lucie County, ultimately securing the location with Sky Zone,” Miller said. Dillon chose Rockledge because he and his family enjoy Florida’s weather and he has a sister who lives in Satellite Beach and recommended the area. “We frequent the area quite a bit and we could potentially move down there,” he said. “The hardest thing with that franchise is finding a good building, and we found a good spot so we went with it.” Co-founded by Rick Platt and his son, Jeff, in 2004 in Las Vegas, Sky Zone has 107 locations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Australia. The Rockledge Sky Zone is the 14th location either open, under construction or planned in Florida. The closest open Sky Zone is in Clermont, with another opening soon on International Drive in Orlando. “It’s a cool place,” Dillon said. “It keeps kids busy, keeps them out of trouble. It’s been real successful.” For more information, go to skyzone.com. VV

IRCC resident awarded Congressional Gold Medal

New CEO for Alzheimer’s Foundation BY GEORGE WHITE

Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation’s new CEO Dale Viger is carrying on a long tradition of Dale Viger helping dementia patients and their families during a difficult time. Formerly called Joe’s Club, the foundation runs adult day care facilities under the new name “The Club” in Melbourne, Titusville and Micco. “Our core program is adult day care and then we also provide transportation to all three centers. We also provide transportation to doctor’s appointments, pharmacies and going grocery shopping. That’s considered essential,” she said. Viger, who for many years cared for her aunt, came on board in May 2015. “I have worked for nonprofits my entire life. It’s very rewarding to be able to do what you love and help people at the same time,” she said. “It is my hope that we’ll be able to expand but I need to get my house in order. I’m still in the honeymoon phase.” For more information, call 321-253-4430 or go to brevardalz.org. VV

Thomas Jones of Viera earned numerous honors during his 31 years of service in the Air Force and 27 years in the Civil Air Patrol. Now he owns the nation’s highest civilian honor that Congress can bestow for his service as a pioneer member of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II. Jones, 87, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony Nov. 20 at Indian River Colony Club. U.S. Rep. Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) presented Jones with the award, which has been given to only 157 people or groups in U.S. history. The gold medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom are the nation’s top civilian awards. “I’m a survivor. I’m the last of a breed,” Jones said after receiving the medal at a luncheon attended by about 100 people. The IRCC resident originally was scheduled to receive the honor in Washington, D.C., in 2014, but was unable to attend. Jones was not old enough to drive when he earned his pilot’s license at age 15. “My father used to have to take me to the airport,” he

said to loud laughter. Jones was a cadet in the fledgling Civil Air Patrol’s Pennsylvania Wing Easton squadron for 2½ years before entering the Army Air Forces. Upon learning that he was a pilot, navigator and radio operator, the AAF embedded Jones in the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner to the CIA. “Overtly, I was an air operations specialist,” Jones said. “Covertly, I was a covert

radio operator.” After graduating from the military’s pilot program and receiving his silver wings, Jones continued to serve in the Air Force for 31 years. He also served as a crew member on coastal patrol missions in a B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator. He continued his service in several CAP departments for the next 27 years. “How great it would be for every student schooled in

the United States of America to even begin to grasp the sacrifice that every man and woman who ever donned the uniform of the American armed services put on the line for us to have the freedom here today to agree to disagree, to enjoy every day that we take for granted so much in this great country, and people like Tom made that possible,” Posey said. “Thank you for your service, Mr. Jones.” The medal honors 100,000 men, women and teenagers who volunteered to carry out flying missions to locate and sometimes attack German U-boats threatening Allied supply ships along the East Coast, Lt. Col. Luis Garcia, commander of the CAP’s Florida Wing, said during the ceremony. Fewer than 100 CAP members from World War II are alive today. “Our members were in harm’s way,” Garcia said. “Many of our members did not return during that time frame.” Today the CAP has 60,000 members and conducts search and rescue missions. “It’s a great organization, but we could not have gotten here without men like Tom paving that foundation and paving the way,” Garcia said. programs that not only move our environmental cause forward, but also positively impacts other areas and other lives. We want to empower people, schools and organizations to help preserve the environment and build together a healthy, harmonious and sustainable community where there is no room for waste. To accomplish that, we will need a lot of help — your help. If you are up for the challenge and would like to get involved, send me a message and let’s make a difference together. No matter the expertise or time constraints, if you want to be involved, we can work around it all. There is so much to be done and to be improved that sometimes it can be overwhelming. We may think we, alone, cannot make a difference. But if we walk hand-in-hand, our chances of succeeding are much greater; we can accomplish a lot more when we work together. So let’s do it, Brevard. In the end, we need healthy relationships in place to make anything happen. We need the support from family and friends, the partnership with like-minded organizations, and the help of each individual who believes in what we do. Recently, a dear group of friends reminded me why we do what we do. As Gandhi said, “it’s the action, not the fruit of the action, that’s important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there’ll be any fruit. But that doesn’t mean you stop doing the right thing.” Happy 2016 to you. Let’s celebrate family, friendship and new beginnings. VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@3RsAndBeyond.org.

fragmentation forces deer into traffic. Florida has about 44 snake species, and six are venomous: copperhead, cottonmouth, coral and three rattlesnakes — diamondback, canebrake and pigmy. In addition, watch out for released or escaped pythons — constrictors — invading the Everglades. Rattlesnakes cause more deaths. They warn with a hiss, coil or rattle. However, if stepped on, they strike immediately. Coral snakes are sometimes handled when mistaken for colorful non-venomous mimics; their display is red, yellow and black banding, but “red on yellow will kill a fellow.” Furthermore, coral snakes have round pupils, not elliptical — slit — pupils like

most venomous snakes. Prey for snakes includes rodents, especially around farms, insects and other snakes. Milk snakes seek rodents and not cows. Pythons may consume deer. Snakes prey efficiently. Legless bodies quietly slither, though boas and pythons, primitive reptiles, display claw-like remnants of hind limbs. Because snakes have no outer ears, jawbones transmit vibration to inner ears. Forked tongues flick to pick up scent. A pit viper senses the heat of prey with a pit between the eyes and nostrils. To subdue prey, these carnivores grip by their teeth, inject venom or squeeze. They do not chew food. Prey, often larger than predators, is swallowed whole, usually headfirst, and

alive or dead. Expandable jaws allow snakes’ mouths to open wide to swallow. Throats, stomachs and intestines also stretch. Periodically, snakes shed their skins, which have silky, not slimy, scales. Transparent scales which protect eyes are also shed. The eyes are seemingly hypnotic without eyelids. Molting involves rubbing heads against hard or rough objects until peeling occurs. Eventually, snakes crawl out of old skins, which turn inside out in the process. Undeniably, these creatures are beneficial. They control pests and their venom helps blood-clotting disorders and may help stop cancer. So, prudently walk away from snakes. Or live in Antarctica where there are none. VV
