The June 16 Buckaroo Ball to benefit Harmony Farms therapeutic riding center in Viera generated $4,400 to turn a pilot program launched in May into a full-fledged veterans service. The money raised will help 11 veterans overcome combat trauma and return to productive lives after a six-week course of equine-assisted therapy. When many veterans return from combat, they are still on “alert,” meaning their body is ready for flight or fight. It’s worse when the veteran knows he can be re-deployed to battle at any time. Horses are the perfect partner to bring them back home mentally once they return bodily from the war, according to certified instructor and veteran Leslie Blanche, one of the human counterparts of the equine-therapy teams at Harmony Farms, which recently launched its Veterans and Horses for Harmony program. “When a human is in that state, they are in

The Great American Celebration continues By MARY BROTHERTON
Since 1996, the Viera Future Foundation has brought Picnic on the Berm to Brevard County, continuing a strong tradition of family fun, food, fireworks and baseball. This year, the Brevard Manatees play the Tampa Yankees at 6:35 p.m. on July 4. Gates open at 5 p.m. The $15 tickets must be purchased in advance for cash, at exclusive locations in Viera. With admission to Space Coast Stadium, ticketholders have access to an allyou-can-eat-and-drink buffet picnic and a special souvenir. The Manatee Tiki Bar will sell alcohol. The berm area is secured and safe for smaller children to run and play while waiting for the game to begin. Children under 2 are admitted free. Baseball fans may opt to sit in the bleachers or bring chairs and blankets for the berm, which is where all the food and drinks will be served. Wristbands will identify berm ticket holders, allowing them complete access to all the event’s activities and the almost never-ending buffet.
Judi John of the Viera Future Foundation suggests everyone should bring bug spray, lawn chairs or blankets and a good appetite.
Those buying tickets are optimistic about watching a fun baseball game, eating traditional Fourth of July picnic food and the chance

Development District. Property taxes charged to members of the VECDD pay for its upkeep as well as for the $6,000 in renovations. “We are really proud of this park and hope more folks discover it and use it,” said VECDD Board of Supervisors member Jo Walsh. “It has incredible features you will find nowhere else in Brevard.
We really don’t want this secret kept.” In addition to a boardwalk over water, oak-shaded benches, new, hard-packed mulch that accommodates wheeled devices, soccer fields, covered patio with restrooms and playground equipment with swings, slides and a rock-climbing wall, it hosts a full canopy
covered forest with concrete walking path that meanders for miles, alongside lakeside communities and a chain of nature preserves. “It’s lovely and cool,” Walsh said of the trail that is the park’s namesake. “That’s a signature feature of how Viera was designed, with lots of nature preserves and trails, but this is the only one that is covered by nature.” In addition to accommodating persons in wheelchairs and with other assistive devices, the park and trail is great for grandparents and great grandparents who have mobility issues, according to Walsh. “Often times they may not want to take their grands and
greats to play because they fear getting stuck in the playground bedding,” she said. All areas have been painted and a new roof put on the pavilion, dilapidated play equipment removed, and— best of all, according to new mother Lisa Osterby—no more sand. “Yes, kids love playing in the sand, but it’s a hassle cleaning up with sand everywhere, and it’s not sanitary,” said Osterby, playing in the park with 9-month-old William George III, and expectant with another baby this fall. “This park is terrific.” For more information, call VECDD offices at 321-6392355. Watersong honors winners of writing contest Kevin’s essay:
VIERA VOICE Photo
Kevin Montes is the first place winner in the recent Watersong retirement community writing contest. Special to Viera Voice
Watersong, a retirement community located on Wickham Road, gave away nearly $3,750 in cash prizes to four winners of the community’s Silver Pen Scholarship during an awards ceremony on Saturday, May 26. The Silver Pen is an annual scholarship, although the topics change from year to year. Kevin Montes, who graduated as valedictorian in a class of 521 students at Viera High School, took the first-place award. He will attend the University of Florida to earn a bachelor’s in engineering in the fall. The second place honors went to Karen Riebsame, a senior at Melbourne Central Catholic High School. Following graduation, she plans to attend Berry College in Rome, Georgia and double
major in animal science and English. Patricia Aziz , thirdplace winner, is a senior at Melbourne Central Catholic High School planning to attend the Honors College at the University of Florida in the fall. Fourth place was awarded to Julianna Reed, also a senior at Melbourne Central Catholic High School. She will attend Florida State University in the fall. The Silver Pen Scholarship was open to high-school seniors with plans to graduate in 2012. Incoming entries were screened and delivered to members of the Resident Advisory Council at Watersong for the formal judging process. Entries were judged based on several criteria including creativity, fluidity of language and the ability to convey complex feelings
Nearly 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s which is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. Contrary to scientific evidence, many caregivers with loved ones who are diagnosed with the disease believe that some memories never go away completely – they just emerge spontaneously and less often as the disease progresses. Do you believe memories are a function of our physical bodies or do you believe that memories live on even if we cannot recall them? They say a man is the sum of his past experiences. Every friend we have met, every conversation we have had, and every encounter we have made all become a part of us on the most subconscious level. They influence the decisions we make, and thereby the habits we form and the people we become. If the maxim is true, this storehouse of episodic information is vital to the identity of each and every one of us, which begs the question: what happens when we can’t remember any of it? This is one of many questions that Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers have long been asking. Nowadays, one out of every eight older Americans suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, and in light of the increasing elderly population, evidence suggests the number will continue to grow. The disorder brings with it impairment to cognitive functioning causing slow, progressive loss of memory. Yet “loss of memory” is a misleading term. Do patients really lose possession of the most intimate memories they have of their lives? This would be a sad reality, one in which Alzheimer’s patients slowly lose bits and pieces of their very selves, until they can no longer grasp their own identities. On the other hand, there is another possibility. Memories may not be gone forever as a result of physical damage, but rather misplaced, hidden and almost waiting to be discovered. Consider the lock and key analogy. A locked safe may harbor a beautiful treasure, yet it cannot be opened without the key designed specific to the lock itself. If a person is unable to see and hold the treasure, this does not mean that the treasure is any less tangible or real, but merely that the person lacks the key sufficient to acquire it. In the same way, memory functions much like a lock and key system. Alzheimer’s victims do not completely lose their memories, but merely lose the ability to recall them at their leisure. Any caregiver may notice this when suddenly her Alzheimer’s patient remembers the names and faces of the family that he had completely forgotten just days earlier. This is a sign that the patient has succeeded; he has found the right key. The brain is a very beautiful, yet complex organ. Perhaps the apparent “loss” of memory experienced by those with Alzheimer’s disease is simply its way of adding on bigger and better locks to safeguard treasures from pressing brain damage. We may never know what is going on inside the mind of one afflicted with matured Alzheimer’s disease, but we can remain hopeful that his treasures are safe. For that is what memories are – treasures that give us a true sense of self.
in a concise and clear manner. Watersong’s Executive Director Sandy Richards said, “This year’s winners all had a personal
connection to Alzheimer’s disease. Most had a loved one who had been diagnosed with the disease and they were profoundly impacted by watching its
progression.” To learn more about The Silver Pen, visit silverpen-slc.com or email srichards@water-song. com. VV

Awarding bids
Association Living By Frank Kneiser CMCA, AMS, PCAM
Recently, a reader asked me a question by email about the way his board makes decisions on awarding bids. There are several ways a board can award a bid. If it is an item that is part of the association’s approved budget, the board designates a person or committee to obtain and award bids. Once the budget is approved by the board, it may not be necessary for them to be directly involved. Another possibility is what I call an enabling motion, something that is very common in government.
The board generally knows a ballpark price of the desired item or service. The board would pass a motion enabling a designee to make the purchase with a “not to exceed price. The board may establish ongoing policies regarding purchases depending on the amount of a purchase. For example, purchases under $1,000 would require only one bid, under $5,000 two bids, and anything over $5,000 would require three bids, etc. Occasionally, an association may only be able
Hopefully, this stimulates ideas that may be useful to your association. It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com. VV

to find one or fewer vendors than policy stipulates. When this happens, I would recommend that the board make the final decision and not an appointee or committee. Your association is a corporation and standard business practices should apply to the bidding process. If your association has accountants or auditors, they can make suggestions on policies and procedures that will pass their muster. This has been just a basic generalization to the bid authorization process.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) Viera Woman’s Club awarded its 2011-2012 grant recipients funds to The Children’s Hunger Project, National Veterans Homeless Support and Operation Smile. Fourteen children at a local elementary school will be provided food packages each weekend during the upcoming school year as a direct result of the grant. In Brevard County, 45 percent of children are at risk of hunger. In some Brevard County elementary schools, about 80 percent of the students are at risk of hunger. Through the National Veterans Homeless Support (NVHS) of Brevard County and their Stand Down Project, the Viera Woman’s Club grant will provide homeless veterans with basic necessities such as clothing, outdoor equipment, food, medical care, warm food, showers and haircuts. The NVHS also informs homeless veterans of additional resources such as emergency shelters, low-income housing organizations, food banks, employment agencies and VA Claims Service Officers. Operation Smile is an international children’s medical charity that heals children’s smiles, forever changing their lives. Operation Smile is a mobilized force of medical professionals who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate. The grant will provide surgeries for deserving children in need. VV

Geocaching in Viera By Rosemary H. Lynn
In early 2000, a new outdoor sport came on the horizon for those who love treasure hunting or scavenger hunts. This one is a little different and involves some of the technology of a Global Positioning System, or GPS device.
Two women who work for the Viera Company, Stephanie Byrd and Kim Africano, are leading up a small group of geocachers in Brevard County. Geocaching involves placing objects in a waterproof geocache (or cache) anywhere in the area and throughout the country.
VIERA VOICE Photo by Stephanie Byrd
Geocachers never know what will be stored in watertight containers that are found hanging on trees, hidden in bushes or other places.
This worldwide activity has become a family adventure where people use their GPS to find the location of a particular cache. They are hidden in some of the most unusual places: up in trees, in bushes, near buildings, construction sites, public buildings, even inside restaurants. Some of the geocaches are as small as a matchbook with only a tiny log inside to record a name and date. Others are much larger, filled with little toys, stickers, coins or even gift cards. The idea with these caches is to take one object and leave another one behind. A typical geocache is a small waterproof container. Some are quite creative, such as animal-shaped or bug containers. Others are simple watertight containers that can be used to keep food fresh. Inside the box is a log and, usually, a pencil or pen. Once a participant finds the cache, using his or her GPS device, a code name is listed with the date. The cache is then returned to the spot where it was found so the next participant can find it. Some call this a modern day version of hide-and-seek and is an offshoot of the popular geo trekking that is played around the world. Geocaches currently are placed in more than 100 countries on 7 continents. More than one million, sevenhundred thousand active geocachers publish on various websites with about five million geocachers worldwide. For more information, visit geocaching.com. VV

Running Zone presented a $7,500 check to Brevard Zoo, a donation from proceeds received from a 3K race held at the zoo on Saturday, March 3. This is the sixth year for Running Zone to host a race at the zoo before donating the net proceeds to the zoo. Running Zone has donated a total of $34,000 in the past six years. This year’s race, the Raptor Run, took runners on a 3K race from the main entrance, down the service road to the backside of the zoo, and then into the zoo running around the main loop and through Paws On. From there, runners headed into Wild Florida and out onto the Dinosaurs: Dead or Alive? exhibit trail before circling back along the backside of the zoo to the main entrance for the finish line. Animals were stationed along the course for runners to view along the journey. Runners also caught a glimpse of the temporary dinosaur exhibit which recently closed. The races at the zoo are always animal-themed and bring a variety of participants including children and families. More than 1,368 runners registered to participate in the race this year including 386 runners under age 14. VV

Ask John Craig why he has served four years as chair on the board of directors for Harmony Farms. As might the other board members, he will likely tell you it’s because he believes in the success of equine therapy. “I want people to know who we are and what we do for riders,” the program director at Craig Technologies and U.S. Navy Reserves captain said. Harmony Farms is a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization that works to improve the quality of life for disabled individuals through interaction with horses. What Harmony Farms does for riders might be more complex. Craig said he has witnessed firsthand how riders move from terrified to awestruck within moments of working with the horses. For 20 years, the organization has operated under the guidance of founder Pam Rogan to maintain an operating stable of socialized horses that help riders with all levels of disability. “I’d say 65 to 70 percent of our riders are autistic,” Craig said. Harmony Farms is a member of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International and works in conjunction with the Scott Center, Early Intervention and other institutions. Craig said, “We work closely with Viera and Heritage High schools. Students come for therapy. Teachers and students attend as volunteers for community service hours. Nursing students train for occupational therapy at the barn.” Volunteers are the backbone of most nonprofit organizations; none more so than a fully operational

horse farm. According to Craig, volunteers walk beside riders for security, lead horses, muck the stables, wash and brush the horses, perform administrative duties and assist at special functions such as the Blizzard at the Barn and the Buckaroo Ball. He said that working at the barn is a good opportunity for exposure to horses for those who don’t have space for their own horse or may want to explore what is involved in owning one before making a purchase. He said, “We bring to the community the chance to be a part of something special.” One of the special things Harmony Farms brings to the community is a new program that addresses the needs of wounded veterans. After a pilot program in May, there is now a waiting list almost as long as the waiting list for the farm’s regular therapy. Harmony Farms held its Buckaroo Ball in June and raised $ 32,000 toward moving to a larger property that will allow the organization to expand its programs. Donors also pledged $4,400 to serve 11 veterans for a six-week session.
According to Craig, the plan is to remain in Central Brevard County. The closest equine therapy program is located in Ocala and the board of directors at Harmony Farms recognizes the need to remain local. For more information, call 321-631-9433 or visit harmonyfarmsinc.com. VV

predator mode. Horses are prey, like a deer with a saddle,” Blanche said. When they are approached in this mindset, the horse will sense it and back up, snorting, thinking, ‘He’s gonna eat me!’ This helps the veteran become aware he is in attack mode and get in a more calm state so the horse relaxes and begins to feel safe.” Art Berger trained soldiers to fight in the jungle conditions of Vietnam. As a therapy volunteer, the men he helps overcome battle trauma may well be some of his “boys.” “They have a certain level of trust because I am one of them. One of them came up to me after his therapy session and said, ‘I haven’t felt this good in I don’t know how long,’ Berger said, his voice breaking up. “That made me feel so good to know what a difference we are making, and to feel like I was a part of it.” Horses have the ability to sense and mirror the emotions of a human. Once a bond is established between patient and horse, the patient literally pours out his heart to the horse in a judgment-free zone. The private talk-therapy takes place in a saddle rather than on a couch, allowing the patient to share things a human could perhaps not hear without expressing shock and horror. “It allows them to recount and put their trauma behind them,” Berger said. Lori Licker, (left) of Melbourne, and Michelle Slocum of Merritt Island stop by the hors d’oeuvre table during the Buckaroo Ball. Both these young ladies have overcome certain handicaps by their riding of horses at Harmony Farms, and they continue to work on others and both indicate they are extremely grateful for the Harmony Farms facility, and the people that volunteer their time there.

Having more than their share of fun at the Buckaroo Ball are (l-r) Sherry Mannix of Melbourne; Pam Rogan, Founder, Executive Director of Harmony Farms and also a Certified Riding Instructor; and Dale Langdon of Melbourne.

Surfing and Horses usually don’t go together, but in this case, Suzanne and Mike McBride of Satellite Beach are mighty proud of their new surf board. They had the highest bid for it in the silent auction at the Buckaroo Ball, held Saturday night, June 16, 2012, at The Space Coast Convention Center, Holiday Inn Express, Cocoa. The event was to raise money for Harmony Farms, Inc., a non-profit, volunteerbased organization providing assistance in activities and therapies for disabled individuals of all ages.

stone’s throw from the new Interstate 95 interchange. The problem, according to longtime Suntree resident Bill Higgins, is it lets residents outside the community in. “No one ever told us ‘no’ before and made it stick,” said Higgins, one of the original Suntree residents who lives in Country Walk surrounding the Suntree Country Club and golf courses. He and other residents became owners when they were offered the chance to buy it from the community’s developer, who went bankrupt in the late 1970s. The move turned a group of retirees into a powerful PAC, shutting down previous Brevard County plans to four-lane Interlachen Road from Wickham Road south, intersect with the thenfuture Pineda extension and connect with the fellow upscale Turtle Mound Road community to the south, which also opposed it. Now, further development on the south end of Suntree made an access road attractive to residents there who can now make an I-95 beeline to Viera Hospital and the Avenue Viera shopping area in minutes. They can avoid the tangle of traffic through Interlachen Road and the section of Wickham Road between Murrell Road and I-95 that can turn a twominute trip into 30. • Wood Shutters

Jack Golden said his neighbors now marvel at the convenience provided by the new link between St. Andrews and Brisbane boulevards, which opened Friday, June 15, 2012. “I think residents were more concerned about who would be coming into the neighborhood, and now they find that they are the ones who use it and marvel at the convenience,” said Jack Golden. He launched the campaign to open the road last year by sending pictures to county officials of a wildfire licking at his neighbors homes at the back of St. Andrews Isle. Firefighters took an additional 10 to 15 minutes to begin battling the blaze because their GPS showed the road open, only to arrive, find it blocked and turn

around to come the other way. Higgins and a majority of residents to the north are more concerned about what may happen at the other end of St. Andrews Boulevard: mornings and afternoons, when children walk to Suntree Elementary School across Jordan Blass Boulevard, the new link may make one of the busiest school crossings in the county even worse. No one will know for sure until school goes back in session in August. VV

I feel that a water park would be A dog park. I’m sort of a best in that it would give the kids conservationist/animal-rights something to do so they are not on advocate, so as long as there are the streets getting into trouble...it boundaries and rules for the park, would keep them active too. I’d like to see that.
I would say a dog park, but I would rather see a dog-water park, with a separate lake for the dogs to swim too.

Local elders, their caregivers and their family members who have questions or concerns about Medicare and related health insurance topics have a new place to turn. The Florida’s SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) Program relocated one of its Melbourne counseling sites from the Wuesthoff Medical Center in Melbourne to Wuestoff Homecare, which is located at 8060 Spyglass Hill Road in Viera. Specially trained volunteer counselors provide information and assistance at counseling sites across Brevard, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, and will now help elders at the new Viera location. As part of the many programs offered locally through the Senior Resource Alliance, SHINE provides free, unbiased guidance through educational materials and health insurance counseling. The new counseling

Cancer Care Center boils with crawfish by Darrell Woehler
Wickham Park Pavillion was packed with more than 50 vendors and sponsors, as well as hundreds of hungry patrons, who participated in the Cancer Care Centers 15th Annual Crawfish Boil on Saturday, June 2, 2012. More than one ton (2,000 pounds) of crawfish was devoured during the course of the afternoon, along with many boiled potatoes and corn on the cob. Some of the live crawfish participated in the crawfish/lobster races for the youngsters. Several local bands entertained the large crowd that came all day to eat as well as help raise funds for the Cancer Care Centers.

Hawks lose spring game; McDaniel emerges as top QB
Hawks release 2012 football schedule
VIERA VOICE Courtesy Ernie Cruz
Viera High quarterback Caleb McDaniel (center, w/ball) drops back during the Hawks’ spring game against New Smyrna Beach. McDaniel goes into the summer as Viera’s No. 1 quarterback. May 25, 2012, Viera High School. By Carl Kotala
If Viera High football coach Kevin Mays had to pick one word to describe the way his team played during the team’s spring game against New Smyrna Beach, it might be “inconsistent.” “At times, it looked like we were good,” Mays said, “and there were times where we needed to play with a little better effort.” Jalen Jackson’s 55-yard interception return for a touchdown turned out to be the only score for the Hawks, who fell to a talented New Smyrna team 33-7. While it was a tough game for the Hawks, considering the Barracudas have a Division-I caliber running back in D’Cota Dixon, Viera was able to use the contest to compile a list of areas it needs to improve on during the offseason. Chief among them, according to Mays, is the Hawks need to spend more time in the weight room to get stronger before the start of the 2012 season. “This offseason could be big on us,” Mays said. Players who stood out in the spring game included linebacker Cameron Milks and quarterback Caleb McDaniel. McDaniel played most of the contest and clearly has the early lead in the Hawks’ quarterback competition. He will go into the summer as the team’s No. 1 quarterback. “Overall, I would say we were pleased and we see what we have to work on,” Mays said. “We’re going to compete in the 7-on-7 (passing) league this year, which I don’t know if Viera’s done in the past. They’ll be in here all summer. We’ve definitely got to get stronger.” Viera set a school record for the most wins in a season (four) last year, and will be looking to top that mark again this fall. The Hawks will host their Kickoff Classic game on Aug. 24 against Heritage High. VV
BIG CITY BASKETBALL Summer Camps

Viera High has announced its schedule for the upcoming football season, which features two long stretches of play, both home and away. The Hawks will host Heritage High on Aug. 24 in the annual Kickoff Classic before officially opening the season Aug. 31 with a game at Eau Gallie. Viera’s official home opener is set for the
following week against Cocoa Beach, followed by a road game at Satellite on Sept. 14 and then a bye. That’s when the Hawks’ schedule gets interesting. Viera will be home for the next four weeks, beginning with a Sept. 28 game against Rockledge and ending with the Hawks’ homecoming game on Oct. 19 against district opponent Port St. Lucie. In between, Viera is set to play another district game

against Fort Pierce Central and will also host Melbourne on Oct. 12. After that … it’s all on the road. Viera will close the season with trips to Melbourne Central Catholic, district opponent Martin County and Titusville on Nov. 9 in the regular-season finale. The Hawks are coming off a 2011 season, their first under head coach Kevin Mays, in which they went 4-6. The four wins broke a school record, which was quite a feat considering Mays was not hired until shortly before the season began. Now that Mays has had a chance to fully implement his system, expectations around the program have increased as the Hawks prepare themselves for the 2012 season. For one thing, Viera is expected to have a much more varied passing game as the Hawks will try to give opposing defenses more to think about. Viera has never been to the postseason, and if the Hawks could get there this season, it would be another big step for a program that has grown noticeably the past two years. VV

Extreme Cheer and Dance of Melbourne world champions perform a winning routine in April 2012. By Rosemary H. Lynn
Mandy Field, owner of Extreme Cheerleading and Gym, is proud of the Melbourne team that recently captured the world championship in the senior division in Orlando. The U.S. All -Star Federation and the International All -Star Federation hosted the World Championships of All-Star Cheer and Dance, with 400 teams and more than 40 countries competing for the title of World Champion, the end of April. The championship and title come with much training, commitment and heart for
the sport. Julie Johnson, coach and choreographer, works hard to help her students achieve the highest awards possible. She is in charge of the dance and cheer steps and the music. Some of the members have been dancing for years, often from the time they were toddlers. Karyna Gonzalez has been dancing since the age of 5. She loves the fast pace of cheer and hip-hop dancing as opposed to ballet or other forms of dance. “This is much more fun and challenging,” Gonzalez said, “and more competitive.” Three nationally ranked dance teams from

Extreme Cheer and Dance in Melbourne received invitations to compete at Dance World 2012 at qualifying national events throughout this past competition year. The senior hip hop dance team brought home the world gold medal; The open hip hop dance team won the U.S. trials, bringing home the Nation’s Cup and the world silver medal. The senior coed hip hop dance team placed fifth in the world. Coach Daniel Maynard works with the teams twice a week. He explained that the individuals in each group realize a team effort is required to pull off wins in various competitions. The teams are divided into three major groups. Twenty members aged 1218 comprise the senior high team; 18 members comprise the adult team of ages 18 and older; and 23 members between the ages of 12 and 18 form the coed team. Kaitlyn Adams, who is in her fourth year at Extreme Cheer and Dance, said, “Cheer and dance is a lot of fun. The coaches are great.” Extreme Cheer and Dance is located in Melbourne off Wickham Road on Skyway Circle. They are currently taking applications for new members. Two schools collaborate in real time on a project with eBeam
Is it field day or boot camp?
VIERA VOICE Photo
Left, Staci Bogart, 3rd Grade teacher from Quest Elementary School and Danielle Kazoroski, network/technology associate from Quest coordinate a project with Indialantic Elementary for a collaborative project at the end of the 2012 school year.
Recently, Quest Elementary School and Indialantic Elementary School combined technological forces in a cutting-edge experiment. For the first time, third grade students from Staci Bogart’s class at Quest interacted virtually with third graders from Mr. Bailey’s class at Indialantic using eBeam interactive whiteboard technology. Not only were the students able to talk with one another, they were able to virtually complete a social studies review lesson together. Using the eBeam, students from the classes could virtually manipulate the same whiteboard at the same time. Students dragged and
placed states on a U.S. map and labeled them so that each class could see them at the same time. The new eBeam technology allows teachers to use any flat surface in the classroom as a whiteboard. Results from student activities can be downloaded directly into their computers to be shared with other classes or individual students. This technology is just one of the many tech advances being offered to students in schools across the world. The students all embraced the chance and the challenge of the new concept and it is expected to bring schools, teachers, students and the educational community closer in the learning process. VV

Hank Slotwinski enjoys running fast for the parachute relay during Quest Elementary School’s boot camp themed field day event.
To honor all of the military moms and dads, Quest Elementary School changed the rules of their regular field day event on May 18 to a boot camp theme where the students participated in various obstacle courses along with other fun activities. Students rotated through a variety of fun-filled military related activities such as the 100 yard dash, paratrooper recovery mission, scooter race, water relay, tug of war, camouflage face
painting, obstacle course challenge, wounded buddy relay (a 3-legged race) and calisthenics. They also signed the Wall of Honor with the name of someone in their family who is serving or has served in the military. Each group of students stayed with its own class but was paired up with another class so students could relieve one another as needed. Normal field days at the school include activity time, which this particular day did not. But the students
received “comp” time of up to forty minutes each to make up for time lost. All students had to wear sneakers and were encouraged to bring a gallon jug of water to be added to the water coolers. As hot as the day was, the students were enthusiastic and energetic as always and had a great deal of fun. Also, the students were encouraged to wear camouflage and sunscreen. VV
Holy Trinity senior named Promising Scholar Special to Viera Voice
Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy senior Emily McIntyre of Viera was one of 16 high school students recognized as 2012 Promising Scholars by the University of Georgia Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO). During a two-day visit to the campus, the Promising Scholars attended the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities Symposium, where more than 190 undergraduates presented their research projects produced under the guidance of faculty mentors. The Promising Scholars attended a roundtable discussion facilitated by current UGA freshman and sophomore participants in CURO’s Honors Scholars program. The undergraduates’ faculty mentors were available to respond to questions about the research process and their individual disciplines. UGA’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities was created to foster a culture of inquiry by providing opportunities for undergraduates to be engaged in research guided and supported by faculty mentors. Ralph M. Williams Elementary School 6th grade teachers dance to ‘Boogie Wonderland’ with Principal Ford and Vice Principal Lanterman on May 22, 2012. By Rosemary H. Lynn
On May 22, the sixth grade students at R.L. Williams Jr. Elementary School in Viera graduated and were given awards for various accomplishments they had earned during the year. Cynthia Ford, principal of the school, began the ceremony by explaining how the education process is preparing students to become “truly global citizens” by learning new technological and language skills as well as promoting physical fitness and arts programs throughout the year. The students have been
participating in “real world, real service” goals throughout the year. With parent participation and teacher encouragement, the students maintained some of the highest grades in Brevard’s education system. After the graduation ceremony and recognition part of the evening’s program, the students presented a musical tribute to their teachers. Students from each of the four sixth grade classes gave performances they had worked on for several weeks. The first performance was Mrs. DellaRocco’s class dancing to Kung Fu Fighting followed by
Mrs. Ravenscroft’s class’s rendition of Thriller. Mrs. Ferrer’s class chose Something to Dance For, which led to Mrs. Meder’s class dancing to Fame. At the end of the students’ performances, a surprise routine was presented by Principal Cynthia Ford and Vice Principal Lanterman with the sixth grade teachers. They danced to the 70s song, Boogie Wonderland, dressed in appropriately funky outfits. As with other area schools, R.L. Williams Jr. Elementary wrapped up the school year on May 25 and will resume classes in August of this year. VV
Congratulations Stuti! Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy’s Stuti Mishra is more than a top student and good citizen. The rising 9th grader is one of the nation’s best spellers. She made it to the final round of the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee, which aired live by ESPN on May 31. She is a three-time Brevard County champion, and two-time champion of the eight-county district in East Central Florida. She tied for 19th place in the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee and is a member of National Junior Honor Society and Math Bowl. This was her second and final entry into the “nationals,” as high school students aren’t eligible. Disappointed to be thwarted by “schwarmerei,” which means excessive, unbridled enthusiasm, Stuti’s family saw her accomplishments as triumph as she defeated all but one of the other 277 competitors. Well done Stuti Mishra! Brevard County is proud of you. VV

The Scott Center for Worship and The Performing Arts on the upper campus of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, just off the Pineda Causeway, was filled to capacity to witness the graduation of 71 Seniors of the Class of 2012 and their commencement at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2012. As could be expected, graduating seniors were a little apprehensive donning their caps and gowns of Navy Blue, which, along with gold, is one of their school colors. But as the time to enter the auditorium drew near, the apprehension seemed to vanish and the excitement of the occasion took over. Many members of this class have been in school together since they were 3 years old. Led by dignitaries and faculty, including G. Wes Lovelace and Vicki Bransford, the faculty marshals, the seniors entered to the sounds of the traditional Pomp and Circumstance. The seniors, seated in their individual chairs, faced the audience. But rather than a group of individuals, this group seemed more like a team of one. Fellow students introduced the salutatorian and valedictorian as though they were brothers and
22
sisters. The salutatorian, designating the second highest grade point average, Sapna Desai, and the valedictorian, with the highest grade point average, Peter Karas, each gave their speeches. These students seemed to spend most of their time talking about every other student in their class, which may be emblematic of Holy Trinity’s motto, “Academic Excellence founded in Christian Values.” Between these two presentations, the commencement address was given by Michael A. Cadore, the community services coordinator for the Rockledge Police Department. The motivational speaker stressed the importance of perseverance and believing in oneself. After receiving their diplomas from Academy Headmaster Catherine A. Ford, and the recessional, students, faculty, family and friends adjourned to the courtyard for the ceremonial tossing of the caps and the release of butterflies. Each student was presented an envelope with a live butterfly to be released into the air. This has become a school graduation tradition, perhaps to symbolize each student’s graduation into the “real
world”. Paws, the school’s tiger mascot, stood in silent witness to yet another class of seniors from Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy as they go forth to carry on the tradition of Holy Trinity’s Mission, vision and core values, including participation, respect, and embracing the uniqueness of others. VV
Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy headmaster Catherine Ford was recognized for her professional accomplishments by the Melbourne Regional Chamber of Commerce on May 24, 2012. As headmaster of HTEA, Ford was acknowledged for envisioning the growth of the traditional school and being responsible for its expansion into an award-winning, high-enrollment school for students through 12th grade.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy graduates Saluatorian Sapna Desai, left, and Valedictorian Peter Karas. By George White
The top two students graduating in the 2012 Class of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy are going to great colleges and, no doubt, will perform well, due to their precollege academic training. Officials at top colleges in the country also recognized that potential, accepting the pair as students who will make an impact and set their schools apart through success in later life. HTEA Valedictorian Peter Karas, with a grade point average (GPA) of 4.69, will attend Harvard University to study a double major of math and romance languages. His longtime friend, Salutatorian Sapna Desai, whose GPA is 4.62, will attend the University of Virginia, planning to study pre-med. Academics is not all the pair excelled at during their high school careers. Karas performed Greek dances at nearby St. Katherine’s Greek Orthodox Church, was on the track state champion 4X400m relay team and played soccer and basketball. Desai is a competitive climber, competing both indoors and outside in Colorado and currently ranked 29th nationwide for girls age 16-17.
“I think the main thing is time management and what matters to you,’’ Karas said. “The main thing is, you can’t procrastinate.” Karas initially didn’t consider Harvard. His mother, Valerie Karas, who grew up in the Boston area, convinced him to try. “He was always a good student and was always wanting to get the most out of every class,” she said. “They (her son and Desai) have been friends since they were in elementary school and they’ve always been kids who excelled at both athletics and academics. These guys don’t waste time. I’m sure they’ll make the most of college just like they both made the most out of high school.’’ Desai also played guard on the HTEA basketball team and served as president of the National Honor Society and as vice-president of the student body. With so many students applying with high GPA numbers, sometimes it’s the extracurricular activities that make the difference on admission to the elite schools, according to Peter Karas. “I think the well-rounded thing is what is attractive to colleges. They want to see you do more than study,’’ he said. VV

Surfboard artist was commissioned to paint shuttles
VIERA VOICE Rosemary H. Lynn
This painting of a sea turtle is just one of many nautical paintings Josh Di Rocco has created in his Rockledge studio.
VIERA VOICE Rosemary H. Lynn
Josh Di Rocco stands next to some of his paintings and surfboards in his studio on June 14, 2012. By Rosemary H. Lynn
At 25, Josh Di Rocco is already an established artist in Brevard County. Like other young artists in the area, he is passionate about his work and terms it his calling. He said that he has been painting since he was a child. Born in New Jersey, his parents moved the family to Florida early on. His sister and twin brother have “dabbled in art,” but have not gone the professional route as he has. Josh works out of a studio that is part of a surfboard shop off Gus Hipp Boulevard in Rockledge. Surfboards are manufactured at R&D Surf and Josh does most of the

artwork on them. Patrons can also bring their own surfboards in to have custom paint jobs created. Josh’s acrylic, pencil and airbrush paintings are sold to customers who have commissioned him to create original designs, mostly nautical-themed. Most of his customers hear of him via word of mouth, as he does not display his work anywhere at the moment. However, he is planning to join some of the local art venues and galleries. Some of these paintings draw as much as $700. His surfboard art can bring in upwards of $1,000. Several years ago, when Kennedy Space Center

commissioned painters for the shuttle models that were displayed around Brevard County, Josh was chosen to paint two of them. One model is the only one with signatures of more than 20 astronauts on it. The other one he painted is located at the U.S. Space Walk of Fame Museum in Titusville where many other space-related exhibits are displayed. To see the shuttle DiRocco painted, visit the Space Walk of Fame Museum at 4 Main St., Titusville. Call 321-2640434 for more details. Hair cuts a family affair at new shop By Linda Wiggins
Viera resident Andrea Beacom finally has a business location in her own backyard. Almost. Opening her fourth Fantastic Sams salon in Central Florida, the location is at the new Stadium Corners plaza anchored by the new hybrid Publix at the corner of Viera Boulevard and Stadium Parkway, not too far from her own subdivision. It’s handy for her children, Kyle and Amanda Molitor, Lacrosse players at Viera High School, for when they help at the shop. Amanda will be working the reception desk before heading off to college. “This is a family business, and our business is families,” Beacom said of the salon that caters to both men and women, boys and girls. The full-service shop offers haircuts, color, perms, straightening, highlights and facial waxing. The manager of the new store, Lee Southwick, will continue to manage the Cocoa salon as well. There are two other stores in the Orlando area. “It’s a lot of work, but it will be fun,” Southwick said. In addition to eight styling bays, the salon will feature a retail area and a seating area designed so wait time is minimized. Southwick and Beacom are inviting the community to come out for a grand opening party Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be contests, giveaways, food and more. Coupons for discounts and free merchandise have been mailed to area residents. “We want to create a sense of excitement,” Beacom said. Eric is a graduate of Rockledge High, B.C.C. and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. His paintings reflect his love of all things nautical, including sailing, sea life and beach scenes. Although he is mainly a watercolor artist, he also uses acrylics and oil paints for some of his work. His love of sailing and scuba diving in the Keys, Puerto Rico and Mexico are apparent in his watercolors. Eric has received commissions for custom paintings from local residents as well as customers around the globe. His work can be found at Grills portside, Grills riverside and at Starbucks in Rockledge. Many of his paintings are sold through these venues. Although Jimmy Buffett’s company initially balked at accepting Eric’s designs, he was not deterred. Making contact with an artist friend of his in South Florida who had connections with Buffett and his company, his designs were eventually accepted and are now selling well. He hopes to continue this

Community rallies at Duran to give Potter a shot
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Zach Potter hits a tee shot during the Supporting a Dream golf tournament at Duran Golf Club. Potter, who attended Suntree Elementary and DeLaura Middle School, is trying to raise money to chase his dream of being a pro golfer. June 1, 2012, Duran Golf Club. By Carl Kotala
Zach Potter has thought about making a career out of playing golf since he was 8 years old. Now, the 24-year-old onetime Suntree resident plans to make that dream a reality. A golf tournament called Supporting a Dream – Zach Potter, was held June 1 at the Duran Golf Club. Proceeds from the event went to support Potter as he works toward acquiring his Nationwide Tour card. That includes playing in tournaments throughout West Florida in June and in the Northeast throughout July with some one-day tournaments, where he could qualify for a PGA Tour event, on the schedule. It also includes qualifying school (Q-School) in August, which could lead to a spot in the PGA Tour Latino America series. “There were a lot of people around here who
wanted to help, so we put the event together and, man, people have been incredibly generous,” Potter said as players in his tournament were preparing to tee off. “There’s just been a lot of support. It kind of just started snowballing. It’s turned into a pretty good event.” Potter attended Suntree Elementary and DeLaura Middle School before moving to Cocoa Beach during his sophomore year of high school. He was the conference player of the year for the Minutemen and then attended University of Florida, where he continued to play in amateur tournaments. He attended graduate school at Florida Tech and went to the NCAA Division II tournament twice—once as an individual, once as a team member— while earning all-conference, all-region and all-American honors.
After graduating, he played a few tournaments to see if it was really the career he wanted to pursue. He attended Q-School as an amateur last year, but a bad third round prevented him fromadvancing. “Pretty soon after that, I went to a Monday qualifier for a (Nationwide) Tour event,” Potter said. “It was my first event as a pro. I missed by two shots, but I played really well. My next event, I played a one-day event and I shot a 64 and I won. I said, ‘All right, I’m doing the right thing.’”
Potter currently works one day a week in the Duran pro shop. He’s hoping he has enough success to be able to hold the tournament again. “My goal is to run this event in the future, but not for my benefit, but for charitable purposes. Hopefully, I can have some success and then run this event to support the community and give back in that regard.” If you would like to help sponsor Zach Potter’s quest to become a golf pro, you can contact him at zpotter2009@my.fit.edu. Watersong expands to create member wellness department, welcomes new hires
Watersong, located on Wickham Road, is expanding to add a fully-integrated wellness department managed by Lynne Fraser. The community plans to hire an additional wellness associate and add new programs to the existing schedule. The expansion is the result of a growing demand for solutions to high-cost clinical care. According to Fraser, the community’s wellness department houses programs that are appropriate for older adults with many needs. These include aquatic therapy and targeted wellness programs in healthcare including interventions focused on improving outcomes associated with fractures or orthopedic replacements, heart failure, C.O.P.D., diabetes, arthritis and Parkinson’s disease.

Wiggle and Win! The Wiggles is the world’s premiere preschool entertainment group, performing for more than 1.5 million fans since 2005 in the United States, alone. The Wiggles perform more than 200 shows annually across four continents and are seen on TV in more than 120 countries. The group appears on television exclusively in the United States on the 24-hour preschool network Sprout, as hosts of Sprout’s Wiggly Waffle, which airs every weekday morning from 6 to 9 a.m. Eastern time. Beginning July 7, 2012, fans can also watch The Wiggles on NBC’s new Saturday morning preschool block, NBC Kids. The Wiggles have sold more than 23 million DVDs and videos, 7 million CDs and 8 million books in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. After 21 years of entertaining and educating children around the globe, Red Wiggle Murray Cook, Yellow Wiggle Greg Page and Purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt have decided to hang up their trademark colored jerseys.
What has more lives than a cat?
This year’s summer tour will be the last chance for families in Central Florida to see the original Australian group as they perform together at Hard Rock Live, Orlando on Saturday, August 4 at 11:30 a.m.
Beginning in 2013, The Wiggles will launch a new lineup that will usher in an exciting new era for future generations of children to continue to delight in the Wiggles unique brand of music, fun and learning. The group’s founder, Blue Wiggle Anthony Field, will be joined on stage by Lachlan Gillespie, Simon Pryce and the first female Wiggle, Emma Watkins, who have been handpicked by the group to become the purple, red and yellow Wiggles. The Wiggles have announced that the U.S. school readiness initiative Reach Out and Read will be the official charity partner of their 2012 Tour. Reach Out and Read prepares America’s youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together. Together, Reach Out and Read and The Wiggles will work to raise awareness about the importance of reading aloud to young children to ensure future success in school and in life.
A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales will be used to support Reach Out and Read programs across the United States. To order tickets, visit ticketmaster.com, or call 800-745-3000.
For your chance to win a family four-pack of tickets and other Wiggles items, submit your wiggliest video to the vieravoice.com contest. Read all the details on vieravoice.com.

The American coot is a member of the rail family. Sections of Canada, the United States, and South America provide habitats for this species in a variety of open freshwater wetlands, as well as coastal bays and inlets. Customarily, freshwater marshes are used for breeding. For winter locations, large areas of open water are favored. This waterbird mixes with ducks, but it is not a duck. Comparison reveals the
coot has a smaller head, its toes are lobed (not webbed like a duck), and it does not waddle. Furthermore, the coot is nicknamed “marsh hen or “mud hen because its head bobs like a chicken when it walks or swims. Generally, the bright-white bill and forehead facilitate identification in the field. Primarily a vegetarian, this forager prefers aquatic plant life; terrestrial vegetation is also consumed. In addition, since it is an opportunistic feeder, it preys on available insects, crustaceans, snails and small vertebrates. Moreover, it is kleptoparasitic—steals food from other birds. To become airborne, the coot undertakes a long, awkward takeoff; it flaps its wings and pedals across the water in an energetic splatter. This “running on water spectacle is even more chaotic when a raft of coots is being agitated by a hovering predator, such as an eagle. For the

Richard and Annamette Jorgensen lived in Brevard County—first in Cocoa Beach for three years before moving back to Denmark— then returning for another four years to live in Viera. Their children, Anna 9, Casper 7 and Jacob 6, all attended Quest Elementary School. Richard is employed with Hydro Aluminum, a Norwegian company with worldwide offices. He has accepted a transfer back to Denmark with the company where they will reunite with their friends and family there. They will live in the southern town of Jutland
Denmark, which has four distinct seasons and is about 20 miles from the German border. Denmark lacks Florida’s humidity, which they said they won’t miss. “The winters are unusually long and very cold,” Richard said. He also said he and his family don’t mind the cold. They are excited about the move. Also, the school system is quite different in Denmark. Kindergarten students normally do not begin formal schooling until they are at least 6 or 7 years old and the curriculum is intense. The children must learn at least two languages, preferably
three. Living so close to the German border, they most likely will not only learn Danish, but German as well. The children are excited to be making the move. Casper said he would not miss anything about Florida, however, Anna confessed that she would miss her friends, one of whom was spending the last few hours with her as they readied to leave. The family intends to take the slow route to Denmark, driving from Florida to Seattle, with many stops for sightseeing. They will leave Seattle for Iceland where they will stay for a few days, with plans to arrive in Denmark on July 5. VV
