Do you have the world’s best father? The top entrants of Viera Voice’s World’s Best Dad contest think they do. Just in time for Father’s Day, Grace Ellery, Shane Angus, Zach Knight, Marissa Gonzales and Gigi and Dominick Piscitelli, submitted winning essays praising their fathers for their hard work, courage and playfulness. Grace Ellery said her father, Leigh, shows strength and stays upbeat despite battling a dreaded disease. “My dad is loving, giving and VIERA VOICE 7630 N. hardworking,” she wrote. “He coached my brothers in soccer for 13 years, and has been to every one of my dance recitals. He volunteers for school events and field trips. He was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma and is undergoing chemotherapy, which makes him tired. Although he doesn’t feel well, he is still there for us. He is brave and positive and I love him.” Shane Angus said his father, Sean, is always there for him and his brother, despite a demanding job that involves a long commute. “My dad is a firefighter for Miami-
Dade County,” Shane wrote. “He is the best because even though he wakes up at 2:30 a.m. to drive 3 ½ hours to work, he’s always at my brother and my important events. Some days he’s had no sleep but always has the biggest smile for us.” “My dada is the best dada because he plays LEGOS with me and tickles me when I’m sad!” Zach Knight wrote of his father, Alex. “And he carries me on his back sometimes. He works hard to make sure I can stay home with Mommy after school.”

She just turned 81 and who knows how much longer she’ll keep traveling around the world.” She purchased tickets for Goodall’s appearance at the University of South Florida and planned a scavenger hunt for the prize. She placed the tickets next to Justin’s favorite stuffed monkey. “This kid has talked about Jane Goodall like other kids talk about Spider-Man or Superman. A passion for Packards connects Viera couple to local Lions Club BY MARY BROTHERTON
Ken Hayden’s father was a Packard man until the day he died. “He worked at the plant six days a week, 10 to 12 hours every day. After church on Sundays, he and his friend sat at our table and talked about Packards for the rest of the day,” Ken Hayden said. “I grew up hearing about how the Packard compared to a Rolls Royce or a Düsseldorf.” If the Packard Motor Car Company had remained in business long enough, Hayden would have probably worked for them. Instead he worked his way from the assembly line to management at Chrysler before retiring. He spent many days driving past what had been the Packard Proving Ground in Shelby Township in Michigan without realizing it. The 600-acre test facility had been dormant for more than three decades until

chairman of the nonprofit organization. “My dad drilled his love for Packards into me,” Hayden said, “so when I heard the historical society was going to make a museum of what
was left, I knew I had to get involved.” His wife, Paula Hayden said, “I was impressed by how instrumental the Shelby Township Lions Club was in helping restore the Proving Grounds. They worked hard to help.” When the couple moved permanently to Viera in 2014, due to Ken’s disabilities that limit his work at the historical site, they decided to join the Viera Lions Club even though they had not been involved in Lions Clubs in Michigan. “We can’t work like we did at the Packard Proving Grounds, but we can find a way to help here, through the Lions Club,” Ken Hayden said. “It just feels like the perfect place for us to be. Besides, they seem to like hearing me talk about Packards.” To talk with Ken Hayden about Packards, email him at hayden2007@cfl.rr.com. VV
Packard Motor Car Foundation
The Packard Motor Car Foundation was created in 1997 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of products, history and properties of the Packard Motor Car Company. The first project of the foundation was the restoration of the Packard Proving Grounds historic site, which was built in 1927 at a cost of more than $1 million. The Packard Proving Grounds was a test facility for Packard, innovators of the steering wheel and other automotive and aviation firsts. The Packard Proving Grounds was home to the fastest and safest test track of the early 20th century. At the time of its closing, the site had no fatalities or serious injuries. In 1928, Leon Duray set the world land record for speed, which he maintained until 1938. Packard’s Proving Grounds employed the best engineers and used the latest technology for testing cars and airplanes. During World War II, Chrysler leased space at the grounds to test tanks. The Chrysler Building has been renamed

the Arsenal of Defense Museum and will showcase Chrysler and Packard’s collaboration. In an effort to keep up with Detroit’s “Big Three” auto makers, Packard merged with Studebaker in 1954, but in 1958, the Packard brand was phased out. After several owners, the Ford Land Development Corporation bought the property and eventually redeveloped the majority of the acreage into residential property. After extensive negotiations, Ford donated seven acres and sold seven acres to the Packard Motor Car Foundation so the site could be turned into a national historical site. When Dutch elm disease wiped out 80 majestic trees on the Packard Proving Grounds in the 1960s, the property was already on its way to neglect. The Elms of Honor program was a project that allowed donors to purchase disease-resistant elms to be placed in the exact locations as the original landscape. Record crowd attends annual Faculty Challenge softball games BY CARL KOTALA
The 12th annual Faculty Softball Challenge was a big hit in more ways than one. Not only did the game draw a record crowd of 3,222 — which included 422 walk-ups — but the addition of Viera Charter School to a lineup that already included Manatee Elementary, Ralph Williams Elementary and Quest Elementary created quite an electric buzz around Space Coast Stadium. After Quest upset Ralph Williams 6-2 in the first game, Manatee defeated
Viera Charter School 15-5 in the second game. It was Manatee’s ninth consecutive victory in the event. While it’s not considered a fundraiser, proceeds from the event went to all four participating schools. Although Viera Charter did not come out on top, the Panthers certainly made their presence known. Not only did their fans help pack the stadium, but they even brought their own cheerleaders. Students held up signs and there were even some students and parents

and I think every teacher got at least two at-bats. It was great.” Manatee got a couple of home runs each from Todd Zgonc and Rob D’Andrea and some strong play from Shannon Daly and Kelly Coffin. Quest, meanwhile, held Williams to four hits thanks to the pitching of Arlene Ferguson and Dan Hicks. Jen McMahan and Lori Kessel were standouts defensively and the Quest crowd certainly showed its support with fans waving pom-poms and ringing their Quest cowbells. Having students and families from four Vieraarea schools all mingling and having fun for the night was just what game organizer Zgonc had in mind when he first started the event.
“I’m in heaven,” Zgonc said. “It’s great that we won, but this is what it’s all about. You’ve got the Viera Charter (families) mingling with the Manatee (families). They’re having a good time. They’re going to leave the game thinking, ‘That was a fun night. Can’t wait for it to happen again.’ ” Because this year’s game was held two weeks prior to the end of school — not on the last day as has been the tradition — the kids will have plenty of time to celebrate the game. At the Quest Fest, a carnival held at the school the day after the game, teachers were congratulated by parents and got high-fives from the kids. VV

That’s it.” In addition to Germain’s play, Viera Charter also got a great effort from Kristen Cook, who reached base every time she got up, and Zulay Yon Perdomo and Natasha Ward, who also played well. “We just wanted our kids to have fun and see their teachers out there, and they definitely saw their teachers,” Germain said. “We played every single teacher,

Hawks bring home medals from state track meet BY CARL KOTALA
As Hayley Lofton entered her sophomore year at Viera High School, her father urged her to try a sport. Her best friend, Briana Gorbea, convinced her that sport should be track and field. That was definitely the right call. Lofton, who swept the long jump, triple jump and both hurdle events at the district meet, finished off her senior year with her first trip to the Class 4A state finals last month. She finished fourth in the triple jump, becoming one of five Hawks to bring home a medal. “I thought I could do a lot better, personally, but I was pretty happy that I made it there because I didn’t make it last year,” Lofton said. Sophomore Kaitlyn Jensen scored two state track medals, finishing third in the shot put and eighth in the discus. Senior Daniel Headley also got a medal for his fourthplace finish in the the triple

jump (45 feet, 0 ¼ inches). Junior J.P. Caglione was fourth in the shot put (477 ½) and sophomore Nick Bandos was fourth in the pole vault (14-0). Lofton didn’t beat her personal record (PR) of 18 feet in the long jump this season, but did set new marks in the 100 hurdles, the 300 hurdles and the triple jump. The latter PR of 38-3 came on her first attempt at the state meet and represented
a big leap in distance for Lofton, who went 33 feet her first time out last season. Jensen, meanwhile, was pleased to come home from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville with a pair of medals a day after playing in the Class 7A regional softball finals in Sarasota. “I don’t think I had the best day I could have at states, but I’m happy that I got to go to states and compete,” she said. Another 4x100 relay win for Holy Trinity girls BY CARL KOTALA
Winning the Class 1A state championship in the girls 4x100 meter relay has become a tradition at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. And as the only senior in this year’s group, McKenzie Kilborne didn’t want to see it end. So after the Tigers got great legs from Alisha Pound, Taya Britten and then Kilborne, it was all up to Giana Gayles. “I was handing off the baton to Giana and we were in first place,” Kilborne said. “I was screaming, ‘Run! Run! Run!’ because I really wanted to win for my senior year.” Gayles brought it home, crossing the line more than a full second ahead of the field. Holy Trinity has now won the event four consecutive years and five out of the past six. Gayles, a sophomore, finished second in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the long jump. “It was my first time competing at a state meet,” she said. “I was really excited, just ready to compete. Afterward, it was pretty satisfying to me when our team won state. And also, I got a PR in the hurdles and the long jump. It was a good day.” Kilborne finished sixth in the high jump. Amy Jameson was second in the pole vault Sydney Smith was fourth in the 1,600 meters, while twin sister Shelby was third in the 800 meters. Samantha Folio was fifth in the 1,600 meters and Elizabeth Bacon took eighth in the 300 hurdles. Also placing were the girls 4x400-meter relay team of Sydney Smith, Jaeda Stewart, Shelby Smith and Bacon, which finished fourth and the 4x800-meter relay group of Sydney Smith, Anique Kattenberg, Folio and Shelby Smith, which took third. On the boy’s side, senior Andrew Cacciatore was third in the 1,600 meters and sophomore Trevor Kattenberg finished eighth in the 3,200 meters. VV

Joe Lentini couldn’t seem to stop smiling. The 72-year-old Melbourne resident had just been handed the first Duran Men’s Golf Association (DMGA) Cup after winning the season-
ending tournament. “It was very exciting,” Lentini said of the tournament final, where he shot 78 to win the final foursome. Jerry McAnulty finished second, Pete Sora was third and Bruce Miller was fourth. Dr. David Hernandez of

Another fun season for the Duran Women’s Golf Association culminated at their recent awards luncheon. The group, which started out in 2006 with 16 members, now boasts 37. The league runs from November through April, though a number of members continue to play together throughout the summer. President Ann Pierce described the league as “friendly, yet competitive.” It’s open to all female golfers. A GHN handicap is required, but it can be purchased through Duran if needed. Annual dues are currently $46, which covers all weekly prize money and $1 toward the hole-in-one fund. Most weeks are based on individual stroke play, but team games are played once a month. League officers included president Pierce, vicepresident Terri King, treasurer Jo Ann Ober and secretary Hilda Bokos. The league recognized its Special Category prize winners at its luncheon. Pierce was honored for having the Lowest Average Gross Score. The Lowest Average Net Score went to Sally Soutter. Barbara Black had the Lowest Gross Score, while the prize for the Lowest Net Score went to Bonnie Brown. It was just the start of a great day for Black, who also won for Most Birdie and Most Pars. The prize for Most Bogies went to Shel McAnulty. There were three prizes for Most Improved based on flight level. Black won it for Flight A, while McAnulty was the winner in Flight B and Brown took the Flight C honors. There was a tie for the Year-long Ringer Winner between Pierce and Black. VV

HD Dental sponsored the inaugural Cup event, which took place with the help of Duran head golf pro Matt Morrison and general manager David Tomczak. Seventy-five golfers, with handicaps ranging from 36 to 6, took part in the event
which ran from October through April. Players earned points based on their weekly DMGA finish. That led up to the final four weeks of the season, where the top 32 players competed against each other with half of the field being eliminated each week until it came down to the final group. The prize pool was $1,600. Lentini, who moved to Florida from Boston in 1975, didn’t start playing golf until he was 35. Of his final round, he said he played well, jumping out to a four-shot lead early and then hanging on for the win. “I wasn’t aggressive (after I got the lead),” he said. “I was playing to hold my own. It was just amazing that it held on.” That gave him a chance to become the first to hoist the Cup at the group’s end-ofthe-season luncheon. “It’s pretty heavy, too,” he said. VV

Olympic Gold medalist swimmer: winners persevere BY LINDA WIGGINS
Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines combined inspirational life-skills messages with swim safety for the nearly 600 students of Suntree Elementary School May 13 before hitting the water at the adjacent Suntree YMCA, one of 28 pools he now oversees as a Central Florida YMCA vice president. “Who are your role models?” asked Ambrose “Rowdy” Gaines IV, a U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame member with three Olympic golds, an International

Summer Olympics and next year's Rio de Janeiro Brazil 2016 Summer Olympics. Gaines unsuccessfully tried to excel in a number of sports in his teens and discovered his love for swimming at age 17, learning to swim at a YMCA pool near his Winter Haven home in Central Florida. He excelled enough to earn a scholarship at Auburn University where he became a five-time NCAA champion. He qualified for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow and was expected to place well before the U.S. boycotted the event. His father encouraged him to try again and at age 25 he won the gold against chief rival Mark Stockwell of Australia, four years his junior. The gold and silver medalists are now good friends, with Gaines recently staying at Stockwell’s home Down Under for two weeks. In 1991, Gaines was paralyzed with GuillainBarré syndrome. After a six-month hospitalization, he experienced a surprising full recovery attributed largely to his superb physical condition as a competitive swimmer. He eventually regained world-class times

VIERA VOICE Susan West
Wendy Hawkins from VSA Florida presents Justin Miller with the VSAFL Award for Student Artist of the Month on May 14 at Viera High School. BY MARY BROTHERTON
Justin Miller takes 2-D Art and Computer Tech (digital art) under the guidance of Dr. Susan West at Viera High School. He is the manager of the girls soccer and boys lacrosse teams, volunteers at his church and mentors other students. As impressive as he sounds, consider that Justin has physically limiting cerebral palsy yet plays ice hockey for a team of disabled youth. Also, he recently won the VSA Florida student of the month award for exemplifying outstanding work in and through the arts. “I am very grateful to be receiving this award,” Miller said. “Especially for art because I have been passionate about art since elementary school when I learned how to draw King Tut. Ever since, I have never stopped drawing or painting.” VSA is an international organization on arts, education and disability headquartered in Washington, D.C. VSA,
formerly Very Special Arts, has proven through research that students who participate in the arts develop creativity, increase self-confidence, understand teamwork, improve language and math skills and are generally more engaged. According to West, engagement isn’t a problem for Miller. “Justin answers every question I pose to the class whether about an artist or a technique. He also mentors a student with no limiting abilities other than the fact that he lacks motivation and is undisciplined. Justin showed the student that even though his work might not be accurate, it shows perseverance. The student finally realized that if he persists, he too can achieve satisfactory results.” According to West, Miller works independently without complaint. “Justin is a super person, always positive with a high level of motivation to achieve,” West said. “He demonstrates knowledge of a

wide range of art vocabulary. He is superb at completing art criticism activities and when working in a group, is the leader.” Miller completes his art projects, often with the given media such as paint or markers, completing a more refined version on the computer. Learning to use a computer for art was a turning point for him. “When I entered middle school, I discovered Photoshop and its abilities to produce drawings and paintings. I enjoy working on the computer more because there is no mess on my hands,” Miller said. VSAFL will feature him on vsafl.org and in an upcoming newsletter. He received a personalized award and a gift card. “Justin has always had a love for art,” his mother, Sherry Miller said. “We are so very proud of him. We call him Jusincredible, because he is.” Miller plans to continue his education and pursue a career in digital enhanced images. VV

New York, Europe on tap for Holy Trinity teachers BY GEORGE WHITE
The summer break will fulfill two very different educational dreams for two teachers at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, one in Europe, the other in the bright lights of Broadway in New York City. The school supports its teachers by partially funding their attendance at workshops in their field of study. The programs not only help the teachers with advanced studies and knowledge but also give them a chance to be around other passionate and driven educators. Lara Duguid, who teaches Holocaust history, will tour historic sites in Germany and Poland June 29 to July 14 with the Holocaust and Jewish Resistance Teachers’ Program. Partially funded by HTEA with Duguid paying a third, the trip includes visits to several concentration camps, museums, ghettos and other sites. Cities on the tour include Frankfurt, Hannover, Berlin, Krakow, Lubin and Warsaw. “I am working on my master’s degree in Holocaust

Duiguid has led two student trips, including Europe in 2010 with a stop at the Dachau concentration camp, and a 2013 trip to France, Belgium and Germany which included tours of the Buchenwald concentration camp and other World War II Holocaust sites. Her former school in Jacksonville sent her to Belgium for a learning opportunity and workshop on the European Union (EU) and European history. Duguid said she will use information and experiences from the 2015 summer trip for her master’s thesis and to enhance her teaching skills. “I had to apply through an extensive, selective application process. I have had a lot of reading in preparation for the trip. Nothing in my education will be as important, meaningful and significant as this opportunity,’’ she said. continued on page 20

and I,” “Kinky Boots” and “Something Rotten.” Special guest for the conference is Broadway legend Chita Rivera, she said. The trip came about because Wouters noticed that Holy Trinity students have had access to a similar program as a fine arts trip including Broadway workshops, she said. “The students have had amazing opportunities to explore the incredible arts culture in New York City. I thought it would be wonderful if they offered something like that for teachers as well so I did some research and found the Broadway Teachers’ Workshop. I approached Cyndi Buist who heads our professional development and she was incredibly supportive and thought it was a wonderful idea,’’ she said. The benefits of teachers participating in workshops will pay dividends for years in terms of better understanding of the business and its challenges and opportunities at the highest level, she said. The result will be new ideas for lesson planning and teaching and better directing ability for productions, she said. “I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of a school that focuses so much effort into personalized professional development that will have the strongest impact on a teacher’s classroom,’’ she said. Upscale steak house opening at The Avenue Viera
BY MIKE GAFFEY
An upscale steak house is set to open this summer at the site of the former Mimi’s Café at The Avenue Viera. Extensive renovations are underway at Austin’s Chop House, Pat Biddix said. The 8,000-square-foot restaurant at 6630 Colonnade Ave. will offer a variety of meat and seafood dishes, prepared by a staff overseen by an executive chef and a sous chef, Biddix said.
“We hope to be open by July 1,” said Biddix, former general manager/president and current director of government relations of Melbourne Greyhound Park and Club 52. Named for Biddix’s seventh-grader grandson, Austin’s will serve lunch and dinner and have seating for 193 customers. The restaurant will feature a finedining room, a banquet room with a big-screen television for special occasions, a piano

bar, a wine locker with an array of wines, a waterfallstyled fountain near the entrance and display cases for pastries prepared daily by a pastry chef, Biddix said. “He makes fantastic, beautiful pastries,” Biddix said. “You can have them here with a cappuccino after you go to the movies, or if you have guests coming, you can order them and bring them home. His portfolio is second to none.” The new restaurant and its outparcel lot are just south of the main entrance to The Avenue Viera. In the past few months, the New Orleans-themed Mimi’s Cafe restaurant chain has shuttered dozens of locations across the U.S., including the Viera facility, which closed in April. The new owners bought the fully equipped restaurant as is as part of the purchase deal, leaving them in possession of everything from plates to wall hangings, Biddix said.
VIERA VOICE Mike Gaffey
The owners of Austin's Chop House hope to have the upscale steak and seafood restaurant open by July 1 at the site of the former Mimi's Café at The Avenue Viera.
“They had walls covered with pictures, instruments, drums and we just opened it up to the public and let them take what they wanted,” said Biddix, who plans to donate the restaurant’s old plates, silverware and glassware to charity. The restaurant’s exterior will be changed significantly, Biddix said. “We’ll have a

Right here in Suntree and Viera, you can’t help but notice all the new businesses coming into the area.” Suntree Station was remodeled two and a half years ago and even now, one tenant is building out the endcap to expand his computer business. “That leaves Suntree Station
with only one vacancy, a 1,000 sq. ft. space,” Anthony said. “Retail is active again. New tenants have moved in. The economy has improved.” Anthony said he feels one reason for the filled-tocapacity shopping center is the fact that 38,000 cars pass that area each day. The businesses that located there realized they would be in a prime position for optimal exposure. For more information, call the Michael Gaich Company at 321-453-4200. VV

The Michael Gaich Company, which has been leasing and managing property since 1987, believes Suntree Station on N. Where were you on Aug. 14, 1945? Tell your story
BY MARY BROTHERTON
Some events are indelibly marked in memory. Time and other actions cannot erase these moments. They may fade into the background while day-today activities of life take precedence, but those memories are waiting to be called to the foreground at a moment’s notice.
One such memory for many residents of Brevard County can be brought to life with the question, “Where were you and what were you doing when you heard that Japan had surrendered and World War II had ended?” On Aug. 14, 1945, the announcement marking the end of the war sparked spontaneous celebrations across America. cities, small towns and rural villages across the nation, the news spread quickly. Newspapers announced: Peace!, War Over, Japan Surrenders — Allies Cease Fire, Truman Proclaims Victory, Complete Surrender and We Did It Again! Radios spread the news almost as fast as word of mouth. Second editions showed photographs of crowded city streets with headlines that announced: They All Came to Celebrate in Times Square Today, Huge Celebration Here to Greet Peace and Celebration Wildest in History of City. In cities large and small, people stopped working to go out into the streets to celebrate. One of the most recognizable moments from that day is a photograph taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, called “VJ Day, The Kiss” when the photographer caught a spontaneous moment between strangers. Especially in the past 10 years, what some call The Times Square Kiss has been recreated in art and by people dressed as sailors and nurses for flash mobs. That kiss, as iconic as it is, was just one glimpse into what people were doing

when they heard the news that one of the most horrible wars of our nation’s history had ended. As crowded as Times Square was, other people were doing other things in other cities and towns when they heard the news. Viera Voice wants to know: Where were you and what were you doing when you heard that Japan had surrendered and World War II had ended? We will be interviewing members of the Greatest Generation who would like to share their memories about that day and would like to make appointments
so we can come to you. We will send a videographer and a writer so we can record your story two ways. We regret that we will not be able to record historical or second-hand versions of memories for this project as we are expecting record numbers of veterans and civilians who were living on Aug. 14, 1945. If you were an adult or a child at that time and remember where you were and what you were doing, we want to hear from you. For more information or to schedule your appointment, call 321-242-1235. VV

House passes legislation to assist Military Veterans SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE
The U.S. House of Representatives passed several pieces of legislation with the support of Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) to expand employment opportunities for our military veterans, better protect veterans from identity theft and further hold Department of Veterans Affairs employees accountable for poor job performance. “Our military service veterans have given so much to defend our nation and protect our liberties. We must honor our commitments to them and their families for their service and their sacrifices for our nation,” Congressman Posey said. Specifically, the House passed the following bills to support our military veterans: • H.R. 474 — Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Programs Reauthorization Act: Reauthorizes important job training programs for community organizations that serve homeless veterans. • H.R. 1816 — Vulnerable Veterans Housing Reform
Act: Excludes in-home aid and attendance care benefits paid to severely disabled veterans for their service-connected disabilities from the income calculation that the Department of Housing and Urban Development uses to determine public housing or Section 8 rental assistance payments. • H.R. 1313 — Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business Relief Act: Allows a surviving spouse of a veteran who has a serviceconnected disability rating of less than 100 percent to retain the veteran’s small business status through the VA’s “Vets First” program for up to three years following the veteran’s death. • H.R. 1382 — Boosting Rates of American Veteran Employment Act: Gives preference to government contractors who employ veterans on a full-time basis and disqualifies contractors who misrepresent their veteran status. • H.R. 91 — Veteran’s I.D. Card Act: Directs the Secretary to provide an ID card to any honorably discharged veteran who
is not a retired member of the Armed Forces or who is enrolled in the VA healthcare system. • H.R. 1038 — Ensuring VA Employee Accountability Act: Requires the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to maintain all written reprimands and admonishments that a VA employee receives for their entire employment with the VA. Walkers make strides to raise awareness of preeclampsia SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE PHOTOS BY LINDA WIGGINS
Advocates for the Preeclampsia Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing maternal and infant illness and death due to preeclampsia, a lifethreatening disorder of pregnancy, made strides May 16 at The Avenue Viera to raise awareness at the annual Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. The walkers joined thousands of other participants around the country who are walking in May and June to support innovative research and raise public awareness about the warning signs and symptoms of preeclampsia. This inaugural event raised more than $9,000 to date and had more than 100 participants. The program featured Dr. Vanessa Dance, MD, an obstetrician/gynecologist with Health First Medical Group, and the walkers were cheered on by the Viera High School cheerleaders. “We are incredibly thankful for the overwhelming support this community has shown for the families impacted by this devastating disease,” said walk coordinator Laney Poye. For more information or to contribute to the Space Coast walk, go to promisewalk.org/ SpaceCoast. VV
Preeclampsia Foundation event director Laney Poye and executive director Eleni Tsigas honored survivors and thanked donors.
Event registration director June Melbye leads the pack to the finish as Viera High School athletes reward walkers with special pins. Below, entire families turned out for the Promise Walk around The Avenue Viera.

When out in the ocean, it eventually degrades turning into tiny pieces of material that may contain toxins such as bisphenol A (BPA) and PS oligomer. Even in small pieces, those are still chemicals that may be ingested by animals and
might end up in our bodies too. While the industry appeals to the practicality and cost-effective benefits of using plastic, we need to look beyond that and invest in real solutions. Perhaps a plant-based hydro-biodegradable plastic would be a good compromise, but in the long run to effectively cut down pollution, practicing the first R (reduce) is what we could do with the most. MOAA-CC honors Army JROTC scholarship earners STORY/PHOTOS BY JILL BLUE-GAINES
Viera High School senior Army instructor retired Lt. Col. Tim Thomas turned the tables when it came time to introduce his JROTC scholarship earners at the May 19 Military Officers Association of America Cape Canaveral Chapter luncheon at Indian River Colony Club. He handed the microphone to his cadets so they could introduce their parents. “Their parents are why they are here. They set high expectations of them and gave them the support for them to achieve those goals. This is why we have the strong U.S. military that we enjoy. It starts there,” Thomas said. He also thanked MOAA members for all the support they provide all of the JROTC programs across Brevard County. “We couldn’t do what we do without the help of MOAA.” VHS scholarship earners honored were Ricky Cupoli, whose Army ROTC scholarship will send him to Stetson University, Matthew Baker to the University of North Georgia, Melik Sava to the University of Central Florida and Jazmin Rice to Mary Baldwin University. He makes me laugh when I want to cry, he makes me smile when I feel discouraged. Most of all, he has made me feel like a blessing instead of a burden. “Some fathers are given by chance and some are given by God. I am thankful that my dad was chosen for me and I will never take that for granted. Because of him, I will know how to love even in a harsh world and without expecting anything in return. that I deserve nothing but the best,” Gigi said. “He and I have the most similar sense of humor so we always keep each other laughing and smiling. We bond over golf, however, golf also causes sarcastic arguments when I beat him. I love my dad and I’m so thankful for everything he does for me and my family.” There are plenty of sports activities to love in the Piscitelli household. “My dad is the best because he coaches my baseball team and he takes me fishing, “ Dominick said. “He teaches me how to do custom cabinetry in his business, L.A.
