Pinecrest Academy Space Coast had the distinction of enjoying the first tour and the first school field trip to Brightline’s new Orlando train station.

On May 3, students boarded buses in Viera and headed to the Brightline station located in Orlando. They earned the first-of-a-kind field trip after they completed a project that captured the attention of the high-speed railway company that will zip passengers from

Orlando to South Florida beginning this summer.

“They’re going into the train, they are going under the train and they get to ring the bell,” said Emily Gerhardt, a fourth-grade teacher at Pinecrest Academy.

Legacy, great community, business brings family to Viera

It was Jeremy and Audrey Stewart’s love of Viera and family that brought them here from West Melbourne in 2010.

They relocated to Viera's Strom Park in 2015.

Audrey’s parents live in Suntree and Jeremy’s parents live there during the winter.

“We wanted to start a family,” Audrey Stewart said. “We wanted a good place with good schools. Viera is a great community. It’s beautiful with a lot of young families here, and it’s growing.”

The couple have been married for 13 years and have a daughter, Emma, 9, who is the only grandchild on both sides of the family. So, she gets a lot of attention, according to Stewart.

The family of three enjoys being active and on the go.

They go to CrossFit five days per week.

“It’s a great community,”

Audrey Stewart said. “When we are not working or working out, we like to ride our bikes on the neighborhood trails.”

The family is in Viera for the long term.

“We’ve been here and plan to be here for a long time. We’re rooted.”

Daughter Emma enjoys designing activities for the family, such as game night, scavenger hunts, making forts and s’mores.

“We really pride ourselves in spending time with her,” Audrey Stewart said.

Living in Viera has also brought new opportunities for the couple.

They met at work as

physical therapists in 2006, but both recently parted ways with the healthcare industry to follow new careers.

Jeremy Stewart became a licensed real estate agent in Viera in 2019.

“I always loved houses,” he said. “I was always on Zillow or Realtor.com in my free time. I’ve been watching the market grow since 2001 when Baytree was still pretty new. Things started to happen in west Viera with Sonoma in 2004, then The Avenue opened in (2004).”

The career change has been rewarding.

“Being a realtor is as

fulfilling as being in health care,” Jeremy Stewart added. “I get to help families like I did as a physical therapist.”

Audrey works in the family business, Harbor Auto Restoration, located in Rockledge, which “restores classic and antique vehicles for collectors and museums,” she said. “My family started Harbor Auto Restoration 40 years ago, my grandfather, dad and uncle. When they were ready to retire, my brother, who's worked there his whole life, asked me to leave health care and keep the legacy going. I said, ‘yes.’” VV

Knowing and teaching the rules with care and love is a passion for Jan Thompson in coaching players for the Special Olympics.

“They are pretty good, they really are,” Thompson of Palm Bay said of the players she coaches.

And as a coach, Thompson must be certified and trained by Special Olympics. When coaching, she shows Olympians how to play the game and explains the rules.

“Most know how to play the game,” Thompson said. “I guess my thing is the more you practice, the better you get. I like it and it is all volunteer. You show them how to play, for them to see what they can and can’t do.”

Thompson’s son, Steven, loves the Olympics and its challenges. Both like the competition and the games that keep them in the program. Thompson coaches volleyball, basketball, bowling and swimming.

Once involved in the program, Thompson became aware coaches were needed. She has been in the program for 25 years, 15 of those as a coach. The Olympians work year long with special seasons that include various sports

such as surfing on Saturdays, and volleyball now gearing up for state competition at the Walt Disney World ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

“You have training once a week, different seasons for different sports and with training six to eight

weeks before competition,” Thompson said.

“We are finishing volleyball now, ... before that was basketball. Swimming is coming up in June and bowling started up in May continuing through September. There are two competitions in the

“I started volunteering in 2017 when I retired and continued work with the Special Olympics,” she said. “Walking took us an hour from the Brevard County Courthouse in Viera to the Publix at Stadium Corners on May 3.”

Darby supports the Special Olympics monetarily and by cheering them on, giving out awards and fundraising.

Students could lose right to drive golf carts to school

If your student is a freshman at Viera High School this fall, he or she might have to ride a bicycle instead of a golf cart to school.

Beginning Oct. 1, no longer will anyone younger than 18 be allowed to operate a golf cart on certain roadways unless he or she has a valid driver’s license or a learner’s license. Anyone 18 or older must possess a valid government-issued photographic identification to operate a golf cart on certain roads.

A violation of this new law is a non-criminal traffic infraction that could result in a fine.

Tracy Newman of Viera believes that a lot of parents rely on their children getting to school by golf carts. Some will be forced to make changes.

“For a lot of families, it will be a hardship,” she said.

Her son, 14-year-old Hunter, will have to get a learner’s driver permit to drive a golf cart to school next year.

Hunter is a freshman at Viera High School, where there are about 300 golf carts registered.

Newman agrees regulations are needed because not all the students operate their golf carts as safely as they should.

“There do need to be rules,” she said. “It’s dangerous.”

There are safety fundamentals that should be followed in addition to the laws. Golf carts must share sidewalks and yield to pedestrians and bicycles.

A golf cart may be operated on a county road or municipal street designated by the county or a municipality after it has determined that golf carts may safely travel on or cross a public road or street.

Viera and Suntree are communities where golf carts are permitted under certain rules. Golf

carts are prohibited on Wickham Road, Pineda Causeway, Viera Boulevard, Murrell Road, Stadium Parkway, Lake Andrew Drive, Tavistock Drive and Judge Fran Jamieson Way. There are other restrictions.

There are other communities in Brevard County that have designated streets where golf carts may be operated.

County Commissioner Rob Feltner, whose district includes Viera and Suntree, said the biggest change in the law will be for those younger than 15. Students could look forward to getting a learner’s permit so they can operate a golf cart.

“It’s going to affect people under that age,” he said. “That’s going to be a change. Well, maybe that will be a rite of passage.”

Brevard County School Board Chairman Matt Susin said that golf cart safety is one issue that will be addressed by a committee being formed.

The safety and security committee, which includes government officials, law enforcement, school principals and The Viera Company, will tackle the issues in the Viera Suntree area.

“We’ll listen to the community and develop safety protocols,” Susin said. “We will make recommendations after the first meeting.”

They plan to make recommendations to the school board and the county commission. Golf cart safety will be one of the first items on the agenda for the committee, which likely will meet later this month or in July.

The committee also will look at other issues where changes might be needed such as school crossing safety at Viera Elementary and other schools. VV

Viera’s Cromartie, Pillow primed to have breakout season

Sometimes, it’s a simple glance.

Sometimes, it’s a nod of the head.

And sometimes, it’s a hand signal the meaning of which is known only to them and them alone.

After all, when you’ve been playing football together since you were 6 years old like Viera High quarterback Chase Cromartie and wide receiver Zack Pillow have, communication comes easy.

“They’ve got a really good connection,” said Viera defensive back Cooper Keith, who has also been playing with Cromartie and Pillow since they were 6.

“Chase always puts the ball right where Zack can get it, and only where Zack can get it, and Zack goes up and catches it right over the (defender).”

In his first season as Viera’s starting quarterback, Cromartie threw for 676 yards and five touchdowns while enduring a string of injuries that limited him to five games. Pillow, meanwhile, caught 29 passes for 288 yards.

After watching the two practice all spring, Viera coach Shane Staples believes

the rising juniors are primed for a breakout season.

And if Viera’s spring game is any indication, he could be right.

Cromartie threw for 458 yards and six touchdowns in a 52-21 victory against Bayside last month. Five of those TD throws went to Pillow, who had 11 catches for 185 yards.

“I expect them to have a big year and you can just tell they’re on the same page right now,” Staples said. “It’s almost the whole receiving corps. Zack’s just kind of the

leader of it.

“… We spread the ball around, but yeah, that tandem right there is going to do big things this year.”

When they first started playing football together, Cromartie’s father Bill used to call the pair Thunder and Lightning for a specific reason. Pillow always ran over defenders. Chase Cromartie ran around them.

In fact, while playing in the Suntree Viera Youth Football League, the pair used to alternate playing quarterback in games until they were 12.

“When I was little, I used to play quarterback,” Pillow said. “That’s what I wanted to be. I always loved touching the ball, throwing the ball and being the first player to actually do stuff with the ball.

“Once I got older, I realized I could catch pretty good, so I switched to wide receiver … that worked pretty good.”

The two have been working hard, honing their respective crafts this spring.

Pillow, who is just under 6-1 and weighs 175 pounds, has been working on his route running and trying to improve his speed by working out at ubrZati to work on his speed.

“I feel like I have crisp routes, pretty good routes,” Pillow said. “I just need my speed a little better so I can be more shifty, and quick, and run faster.”

Cromartie, who is 6-feet tall, played at only 120 pounds last season. He has already added 35 pounds since then and hopes to add another 10 during the summer while also taking the knowledge he

gained in his first year as a varsity starter to make improvements for this fall.

“I learned that varsity is very different than years before … reading the defense and how fast the defense is and decision making and all of that,” he said.

“My new quarterback coach (Tony Gulla) has helped me a lot and we’ve been working a lot. I feel like I had pretty good (awareness) last year, but I feel even better this year.”

The one thing that can’t be taught is the connection

VSLL All-Star baseball, softball action set to begin this month

If you’re looking for some local sports action to watch this summer, the Viera Suntree Little League has got just the thing for you.

The VSLL will have five baseball and softball All-Star teams competing this season along with one Juniors softball team that will have a roster combined with players from Viera, Eau Gallie and West Melbourne.

It all gets started June 10 when the 50/70 baseball tournament is scheduled to get underway at Hedgecock Field in Satellite Beach.

The rest of the Division 2 action takes place at Rodes Park in West Melbourne beginning June 16, for most of the baseball and softball teams. Majors baseball and Juniors baseball are scheduled to start June 24.

Because there is only one Juniors softball and one Seniors softball team in the district, those teams will advance to the sectionals, which begin July 1, in Port St. Lucie.

Here is a list of VSLL All-Stars who will be playing this summer:

Cromartie and Pillow have on the field. Of the five touchdown passes they teamed up for Friday night, three of them came on back shoulder fade routes.

“Almost every fade route was a signal,”

Cromartie said. “We saw something we liked with the mismatch and the alignment of the corners and we took it.”

While he knows the signals are in the confines of the Viera offense, Staples admits he doesn’t always know what the pair are signaling to each other.

“I kind of give them the freedom to a certain extent, but I don’t know what their signs mean,” Staples said. “We have our signs, and then I think they have their own signs that mean the same thing at times.

“It’s cool to watch, especially this spring. They’re growing together.”

Coming off an 0-10 season, the Hawks have talked all spring about how they have something to prove come the fall.

If Cromartie and Pillow can have the kind of season Staples is expecting them to, Viera

just might surprise some people.

“People are going to expect us to go 0-10 again,” Pillow said.

“Everyone expects that. We’ve just got to show people that that’s not going to happen.

“This is kind of our revenge season. We’ve got to show them who we actually are.” VV

Suntree 21 year old follows father, grandfather into auto racing

Steven Hollinger of Suntree attended his first sprint car race at three weeks old. Now, at age 21, he’s following both his father and grandfather’s legacy of racing cars.

“My dad got me into a go-cart when I was 7 or 8, and I moved to bigger cars at age 15,” Hollinger said. “I was in the right place at the right time and here we are.”

He races nearly monthly as part of the BG Southern Sprint Car Series. He was the 2022 rookie of the year, an honor his father earned in 2012.

“My son is very outgoing and very competitive,” said Rex Hollinger of Titusville. “He has the chance of making a career out of racing. I was married and had a family, so it was a hobby for me.”

The late Jack Hollinger, Steven’s grandfather, raced stock cars in Ohio, while Rex Hollinger raced for 35 years in various cars and classes in Florida. He owns a 700 horsepower sprint car that he and Steven built and raced, but now it’s “on the block for repairs.”

Steven also drives a team car.

“Sprint cars are simplified racing machines designed to go really, really fast. Most think of race cars as either Formula One or NASCAR cars. This is a cross between the two,” Steven Hollinger said.

Most sprint cars are easily recognized by their airfoils, a large metal

wing-like roof attachment aerodynamically designed to hold the car to the dirt or paved track, so it doesn’t go airborne at high speeds. On a quarter-mile oval track, Steven Hollinger has reached 115 mph.

“Sprint cars use downforce, so the faster you go, the more you are stuck to the track,” he said.

Hollinger said sprint car

racing is open wheel, so he avoids any contact with another vehicle. Race tracks vary in length and design.

Upcoming races include a June 3 race at Auburndale Speedway, July 3 at Showtime Speedway in Pinellas Park and July 8 at Citrus County Speedway in Inverness.

Sponsorship inquiries can be sent to stevenhollinger2002@gmail.

com

Hollinger also is heavily involved in drone photography.

“I saw my first drone as a kid and thought it was cool,’’ Hollinger said. “I got one at 15.’’

Hollinger earned a pilot’s license when he was 19. He pulls banner messages behind a small plane while flying over the beach. VV

Students’ plan to attend Pinecrest snarled by construction delays

Pinecrest Academy

Space Coast was forced to cancel 300 previously accepted students because it could not use temporary pods as planned until the construction of a permanent building.

The school had previously planned to use pods, or portable buildings, as a solution to accept more students while the planned expansion gets final approval from the county. It also had to wait for construction materials to become available after delays due to permit backlogs and shortages due to the COVID pandemic.

Pinecrest had approved the additional students while the administration thought they could get the pods approved quickly to continue with the already filed plans for the expansion construction.

In May, the school was informed by its governing board that if it filed for the pod construction it would start the clock again on getting a permit for any additional construction on the site. Doing so would set the construction plan back and the new plans would have to include both the pods and all planned construction of the new classrooms. It could not do both separately.

Administrators decided to stick with the initial plan for the construction of the proposed building, Pinecrest Principal Sylvia Mijuskovic said.

“The latest we heard was that permitting is in its last phase, and it should have groundbreaking in early June with an anticipated completion date of April 2024,” Mijuskovic said. “That building will house 550 students.” VV

Space Coast Principal Sylvia Mijuskovic, affectionately known as Mrs. M, is retiring at the close of this school year.

She came out of retirement after her years as principal of Space Coast Junior/Senior High School to participate in the planning stages of Brevard County’s first and only dual language immersion program charter school with an emphasis on STEM. She has taught and been an administrator at every level through the past 40 years, including a stint as a director in Miami-Dade County.

Seven staff members followed her from Space Coast Junior/Senior High School. Among them is the assistant principal and future new principal Heather Berringer.

Because of Mijuskovic’s mentorship, Berringer got her master’s degree in educational leadership. During Pinecrest’s first year when there wasn’t enough of an enrollment for her to officially be the assistant principal. Berringer said she “served at the pleasure of the principal.”

“Elementary education is always my real passion. I

went and taught secondary school because I wanted to work for her” at Space Coast Junior/Senior High. “My kids have always gone through charter schools, so it was like a no-brainer to me. I get to work with her, I get to be with the little elementary kids, I get to work with the movement that I really believe in. I’m a big believer in the charter movement.” Barringer said. Mijuskovic said, “it’s like running a race with a baton. I’m just passing the baton to

Heather. I’m a big believer that good leaders build new leaders. What better option than to leave the school that I built in the hands of someone that built it with me since day one. It’s not my vision; it’s our vision and our mission.”

“Everyone that knows me knows that I will do something in education

because that’s my passion, but it’ll be at my own pace. But I just love kids. I find

it an honor to be able to be part of a child’s life and leave an impact on that child.” VV

Alumni community recognizes outstanding Space Coast Knights

The Space Coast UCF Knights Alumni Community presented two $1,000 scholarships and announced the 2023 Notable Knight Award recipient at the 13th annual Starry Knights awards banquet May 18 at Brevard Zoo’s Nyami Nyami River Lodge.

The Debbie K. Phillis Space Coast UCF Alumni Community Endowed Scholarships are designed to help offset the cost of attending the University of Central Florida for Brevard County students. Since 2011, there have been 17 scholarships awarded totaling more than $25,000.

This year’s scholarships went to Esther Francom of Viera, who is entering her senior year at UCF majoring in chemistry with a minor in biology, and to Rhianna Horner of Titusville, who is in the Themed Experience graduate program at UCF. Horner is a Master of Fine Arts degree candidate.

“I will use this scholarship

to keep my undergraduate debt to a minimum so that I can save for graduate school,”

Francom said. She said her dream is to become a professor in a chemistryrelated field.

Horner has an interest in writing for museum exhibitions.

“I am entirely grateful for this scholarship since graduate school is very expensive,” she said. “Essentially, this award will cover one full course for me for one semester.”

Rachael Preston Sumner of Titusville was named the Notable Knight for 2023, an award that honors a UCF graduate who has made a significant impact on the Space Coast community.

Sumner is a UCF alumna

(Class of 1997, B.S. in Exceptional Education, Learning Disabilities). She has devoted herself to helping others — first as a special education teacher for Brevard Public Schools and now as a mental health counselor in private practice in an underserved area of North Brevard.

“Sumner values individuals and recognizes everyone needs support in life,” said David Palmbach,

the chairman of the Space Coast UCF Knights. “Her calling to serve her community as a mental health counselor means that she invests countless hours, many pro bono, supporting teens, young adults and others with strategies to improve their personal mental health. She is selfless, dedicated and tireless — a shining example of what is best about UCF grads.”

The Keynote speaker of the evening was Ash McGrath of Palm Bay, a UCF alumna, who was the 2020 winner of the Notable Knight Award. She is a Quality Analyst in Health Information Technology at J. Lodge, a Cognosante Company. She is a native of the Space Coast and the author of the book: “UnabASHed by Disability.”

There were nine applicants for the scholarships this year. Criteria for the scholarships included being a full-time undergraduate or graduate UCF student, being a

permanent resident of Brevard County, meeting specific GPA requirements, as well as having demonstrated involvement in community service. A committee made up of faculty and staff reviewed the scholarship applications and made the selections. There are more than 27,000 UCF alumni in Brevard County. Membership in the UCF Space Coast Alumni Community is free. The community is dedicated to engaging UCF alumni living on the Space Coast by fostering a mutually beneficial relationship with the university through networking events, service/ volunteer activities, sporting event outings and philanthropic donations. All aboard! Pinecrest tours Brightline

Continued from page 1

In the students’ study of the Transcontinental Railroad and because Pinecrest Academy Space Coast incorporated project-based learning, they did a project related to their curriculum.

They chose Brightline and created a website and wrote a letter to Florida’s governor to add stations in major cities around the state. Brightline responded by reaching out to Pinecrest Academy’s fourth-grade teachers Gerhardt, Julie Forester and Cara Youker with an invitation for a tour.

“Our project was related to the Transcontinental Railroad, which was a railroad that spanned across the whole United States,” Gerhardt said. “We thought with this new Brightline train, it’s spanning across a majority of Florida, it’s very much connected to the unit, so we wanted to bring that real-world connection into the classroom in that way.”

The visit also took them to the new station in Orlando positioned near the south entrance of Orlando International Airport. The children toured the station and enjoyed lunch on one of the trains on the platform during what was dubbed Bright Kids Career Day. The children were introduced to careers at Brightline and the hard work to build the intercity passenger rail. After lunch, the students toured Basecamp, the company’s vehicle maintenance facility.

The students had lots of questions for engineers and technicians at the Orlando station. They got a look at bridge and railroad engineering, behindthe-wall technology and a visit inside a locomotive cab. They even donned hard hats for a look at the undercarriage of a train. Students also learned about rail safety, took the Brightline Rail Safety Pledge and committed to staying off the train tracks.

“I thought it was like Brightline, just a regular train, but it’s going to be like the next big thing in Florida,” said River Gonzalez, a fourth grader and a leader on the school project. “I liked seeing the behind the scenes, like computers and TVs. It was really interesting, and we got to see how they made the TVs work.”

Brightline officials invited the students after taking note of their innovative school project.

“This field trip came about as a result of a project that Pinecrest had done on the Transcontinental Railroad,” said Katie Mitzner, the Brightline director of public affairs. “And we thought that it was only fitting that these students come and see what Brightline is all about, see what jobs go into Brightline and how Brightline not only is built all the way to Orlando but how it operates on a daily basis.” VV

Chicken Salad Chick takes chicken salad to another level

It was love at first bite for James and Cathy Brown after tasting the food at Chicken Salad Chick.

“We were moving my son-in-law to Gainesville, Florida — from St. Louis to UF — and we ate at Chicken Salad Chick practically every day,’’ said Cathy Brown, who eventually acquired a franchise with her husband James. “The food was so outstanding that I had a lightbulb moment thinking it would be great to own one of their restaurants in Brevard County. We spoke to the owner in Gainesville to get some franchise feedback, and we immediately got on the

Chicken Salad Chick website and applied to be considered for a restaurant opportunity in our community. That was two years ago.’’

Originally from Michigan, the Browns are Melbourne residents who have been in Florida since 2005. They have watched the explosive growth that Viera and the surrounding areas are experiencing.

“We were so excited to be selected by Chicken Salad Chick for one of their restaurants and be at The Crossings in Viera, as it’s a great location,” Brown said.

“We’ve worked with some wonderful folks both at SJC Ventures and at Chicken Salad Chick who have been outstanding throughout the whole process.’

Chicken Salad Chick started in Auburn, Alabama with stay-at-home mom Stacy Brown making chicken salad out of her house. Her recipe became so popular that the franchise now boasts of more than 225 restaurants with plans to exceed 250 or more locations, including additional states, in 2023. They offer made-fromscratch meals in a fast, casualdining setting and most of their salads are named after the women that have played a big part in supporting

Chicken Salad Chick.

Additionally, Chicken Salad Chick founded the Chicken Salad Chick Foundation. It makes sizable donations to the American Cancer Society, coupled with fundraisers. They’re also passionate about ending hunger in America and partnering with Chicken Salad Chick locations that work with local food banks to give back to the community.

“The restaurant opening is tentatively scheduled for September 2024, depending on construction. We’ll offer about 12 versions of seasonal chicken salads alternating

from classic, savory and fruity,” Brown said. “The clientele is about 80% female, but guys are starting to realize how good the food is.”

Chicken Salad Chick will be one of the restaurants at The Crossings in Viera, the 20-acre commercial plaza off Viera Boulevard and Star Rush Drive, south of the I-95 interchange.

The Browns have also been awarded the West Melbourne/Melbourne

Chicken Salad Chick territory and they’re actively looking to open another location soon. VV

Cigar lounge prepared to make its entry at The Avenue

Trey Baruti, the owner of Fairway Cigar Lounge, has always been passionate about cigars.

“My roommate in college was the son of a Cuban immigrant who was a cigar roller. That’s how I was introduced to premium cigars,” Baruti said.

Baruti, a resident of Satellite Beach, once lived in Viera. He frequented The Avenue Viera and thought it would be the perfect place for a cigar lounge. He saw the importance of establishing a place specifically designated for cigars and tobacco.

It is the only place where one can find Baruti’s 5½by 54-inch ring-gauged, box press cigar from the A. Baruti Premium collection.

Fairway Cigar Lounge is located at 6729 Colonnade Avenue, Suite 108, near Kohl’s department store.

The 1,600-squarefoot lounge, now under construction, is expected to open in late summer. Baruti describes the interior as “relaxing and soothing.” It will feature wood floors,

leather sofas and bar stools, the brand’s white, green and gold signature colors, and a baby grand piano.

There also will be a shoe-shine station “for the gentleman or lady who likes to make sure their shoes are shiny,” Baruti said.

“I believe this is an art that has been lost. I appreciate art and when you walk into the lounge, it will be of that magnitude.”

A 400-square-foot outdoor patio behind the lounge will feature summer outdoor patio furniture and beautiful sunset views.

The lounge will be open to the public. Three levels of membership are also available: white, green and gold.

“There are perks to being

a member,” Baruti added. “With the gold membership, you get your own locker to store your cigars, and 20% off purchases of all tobacco (cigars and pipe tobacco), merchandise and alcohol.”

A membership, regardless of level, gets the member

into private events at the Viera location as well as in the county, as well as a 20% discount off golf at select areas in Melbourne.

“This is something that will become a franchise that will be headquartered in Brevard County,” Baruti said.

“Brevard County has welcomed me and my family with open arms and is 100% on board with the growth of Brevard County’s small businesses,” he said. For more information, go to fairwaycigarlounge.com VV

Kava popularity growing with Island Root expanding

Kava has been growing in popularity in the U.S. with trendy bars emerging across Florida.

The social drink is now in the spotlight, touted for health and medicinal properties, as a supplement mood-booster, as an anti-anxiety remedy and as a hip alternative to alcohol.

At Island Root Kava Bar in Suntree Kava is a way of life. There, they incorporate the root in drinks with fruit juices.

“I was first introduced to Kava about 18 years ago when I walked into a bar with some friends and didn’t know what it was,” said Tony Childers, co-owner with John Shealey of Island Root Kava.

“After drinking Kava out of a coconut shell, I realized it relaxed me and gave me a great sense of calmness. Kava has reduced my stress levels and gives me the ability to sleep better.”

So what is Kava or as the islanders call it Kava-Kava?

It’s a root found in the Pacific Islands — Micronesia, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Hawaii. The evergreen shrub grows on the hillsides of low-lying mountains and its root has been used in the regions for medicinal and ceremonial purposes for thousands of years. The root is pounded to make tea and locals drink it to

lessen restlessness, calm anxiety and help with sleeprelated issues.

“When I first opened my first location in downtown Melbourne in 2011, it was the sixth Kava bar in the U.S.,’’ Childers said. “Our locations now have a big following in the community and it’s like the bar in Cheers, where everyone knows your name. We have a mixed crowd of all ages, everyone has great conversations where friends meet. I’ve had a couple that met at one of our locations, got married and now have teenage kids.”

The location in Suntree is celebrating its two-year anniversary June 17. Its manager Angela Schulze who helped open the store has been with the company for seven years.

Childers also is expanding Island Root Kava to Satellite Beach and to Sebastian. The Satellite Beach location will be restricted to patrons 21 and older.

Besides the downtown Melbourne and Suntree locations, he also has Kava bars in Eau Gallie, Jensen Beach, Jupiter, Port St. Lucie,

Royal Palm, Coral Springs and Stuart.

Chef realizes dream, opening upscale market-restaurant destination

The opening this month of Ercan Ekinci’s $10 million Urban Prime Marketplace Restaurant fulfills a 20-plus year dream to share his love of fresh, locally sourced gourmet food with customers he has served for decades as a wellknown Brevard County chef.

“In January 2020, I left the Green Turtle Market with plans to open this and, one month later, we faced COVID. Restaurants were closing, so I put plans on hold.”

Since then, he said, building

materials, food and labor costs have doubled and even tripled.

“Our mission is to share unique culinary expertise

in a reasonably priced shop for gourmet food, shopping, casual drinks and social gatherings,” Ekinci said.

A 300-seat restaurant is planned, with an open market of nine separate departments, an indoor and outdoor bar with fire pits and live music. Curbside pickup will be available.

The 4,500-square-foot market will have an artisanal butcher shop, sustainable and wild-caught seafood, to-go prepared entrees and sides, made-to-order sandwiches, fresh salads, a bakery and specialty coffee shop, and a four-aisle global market offering local produce and goods, a deli and a sushi bar.

The modern-styled building will feature local artwork for sale, changing quarterly. A 7,000-bottle wine cellar sits between the market and restaurant. A commercial kitchen, storage, offices and restrooms complete the 13,000 square-foot space.

Ekcini said the 1.7-acre site at 2435 Metfield Drive will generate 125 jobs. The building has five sound zones and a variety of lighting, including lights on the front

of the building to mimic champagne bubbles. Parking is available for 100 cars plus golf carts, which he said is a first for the county.

Residents moving to the nearby townhomes and apartments say they’ve been waiting. Jose Matos said the destination will “give us something to do like I had in Fort Lauderdale.” He moved into The Pearl of Viera nine months ago.

Ana Maymone and Morgana Timbo recently moved from Montreal and saw the development’s signs.

“We got excited to have a great place to get together. It’s right across the street,” Timbo said.

Maymore called the market-restaurant “a great addition to The Avenue.”

As the youngest of five on his family’s farm outside Istanbul, without running water or electricity, Ekinci learned about crops turned by oxen and freshly prepared food from his parents. After leaving home as a teen to travel, Ekinci came to Florida when he was 23 to study

culinary arts.

“I washed dishes and got experience.” He worked his way up to become certified by the American Culinary Federation. He is a Chef of the Year for the Space Coast Chapter.

Ekcini hopes his relaxed venue will become an alternative for locals to Disney Springs or similar sites by offering wine and alcohol tasting and classes, a wine club, Sunday jazz and sunset views.

“The Town Center of Viera will host open-air music events, art shows and farmers’ markets. Families and young professionals will find many shopping and culinary dining experiences at Urban Prime,” he said.

Beginning hours for the restaurant will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. each Sunday.

The Market hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. or later on Sunday. VV

Choice, lifestyle, nature share stage in Viera’s newest communities

The lake is serene at 8 a.m. Afloat, a large white bird, worthy of an Audubon cover, is the lone inhabitant, slightly creasing the water and redefining the postcard as real.

Even amidst the beginning of rush-hour traffic and ongoing construction, Borrows West Park renders it no more than white noise as the palms, some yet to open, parcel out the breeze. The sun, freshly risen, bathes Lake Andrew Drive and Stadium Parkway, the yellow brick roads and gateways of the Duda purpose “… to multiply and share God’s blessings.”

The proliferation begins with busy Viera Boulevard, recently populated with Interstate-95 access and new businesses. The southward turn at Lake Andrew Drive gently reveals a city-like expanse of municipal offices, businesses and residences, some familiar, some in their infancy, the newer ones piquing curiosity and inspiring a trip, ending for the time being and ironically enough at a place called Pangea Park.

The journey unveils an abundance of living choices and amenities as the hustle and bustle slowly yield to the more bucolic nature of the new construction. The Viera Company (Viera means faith, has remained steadfast in its mission of creating vibrant communities. There are stops along this five-mile trip where the new babies of this community await their visitors.

In the latter portions of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, Pangea was allegedly a supercontinent that broke off into Gondwana and Laurasia. Today, rapidly forming Pangea Park sits immediately south of the Lake Andrew Drive and Pineda Boulevard intersection, just across the street from Costco.

Laurasia is the developing land mass to its immediate west currently accessible via Stadium Parkway.

Paula Jones, a sales manager for Viera Builders, has the nimble fingertips to manage the smartboards in the sales office of Pangea Park. The models and the choices are reflective of what the research shows people want, a departure from the cookie cutter communities and a say in what goes into the inside and outside of their future homes, as well as the community’s amenities.

“When you come into Pangea,” she said, “right in the center, you’ll have the amenities — pool, pickleball, tennis court, playground, a pavilion with a kitchen and picnic tables.”

Pangea Park is made up of different collections and size lots, with floor plans ranging between 1,795 and 3,647 square feet. There are homes going up rapidly, some on 45-footwide lots, some on 55-foot, some single-story, some two-story. Jones considers what she calls flex areas to be a unique feature of Pangea Park. Choices are available minus the formality of having to make an appointment to sit down with the builder. Buyers can opt for the gourmet kitchen, an extended lanai, or a flex room that might serve as a fourth bedroom or a study. At buildout, Pangea Park will have 676 homes.

“We have a design studio that is open twice a week,” Jones said, “for preview without an appointment so you can match up what you’re looking to put in your new home.”

The drive must include a quick sweep of Laurasia. Less further along than its sister community, Laurasia has structures rising from the dust of dinosaur-sized machinery, footprints between 2,708 and 3,937 square feet, and boasts 14 different models, also with customizability. Somewhat

higher end than Pangea Park, Laurasia will have 263 homes upon completion.

The northern end of the Viera community sprouted from Fiske Boulevard more than two decades ago, giving birth to Stadium Parkway, the original gateway road, one of time-tested progress

and continued progression. The road flexes its muscles, boasting established communities, businesses, a government center, schools, golf courses, and sprawling into the newest 55-plus community of Del Webb.

There are a dozen models to choose from, ranging from 1,405 to 3,453 square feet. Situated among a series of ponds, the 500acre development will have 1,297 units at buildout. The palatial entrance is framed by a lake with a spouting fountain and features a 30,000-square-foot amenity center. Established as an active lifestyle community, Del Webb features lifestyle directors who plan community calendars in conjunction with resident input. There are dances, community socials, arts and crafts, health and fitness classes, sports

courts, and a resort-style pool. Advertising itself as “America’s leading builder of developments for people ages 55-plus,” Del Webb has been in business since 1960.

Deborah Tomczak, a RE/MAX realtor, believes that people in the 55-plus category like the idea of a uniquely designed community complete with amenities catering to their needs.

“I have been in the business for 18 years as an area expert in real estate,” she said. “There is a lot of demand for Del Webb at Viera.”

As of this writing, it is almost guaranteed that one will not notice the entrance to Aripeka on the way home from Costco. Announced by unassuming low wooden fencing, the development is in its embryonic stage with only one home currently under construction. The drive through yields a natural landscape framed by lakes, and 260 future homes will be nestled within nature trails and serene little park areas. Today, Aripeka sits pristine with the promise that the oaks, palms and pines will remain undisturbed in deference to their beauty.

Scott Miller, The Viera Company’s executive vice president of sales, marketing and community development, sums up the vision for Aripeka. Because the community will not be a typical clear-and-build design, he champions individual homeowners who will be able to have their homes designed with preservation in mind.

“Just drive through, and you will see magnificent examples of old Florida oaks and sabal palms,” said Miller, who takes the company’s stewardship role to heart. “We want these builders to do something very unique with a very unique piece of property.”

The drive through conjures thoughts of a more primitive time. It will be the task of four custom builders, CDS Builders, Joyal Homes, Lifestyle Homes and Stanley Homes, to blend their magnificent structures in homage to the nature that has remained a constant.

As determined by John Burns Real Estate Consulting, Viera is the eighth-ranked master-planned community in the country. The seamlessness of its ongoing growth is testimony to the vision. VV

Nurses, PAs feel true calling to serve others

Nurses are the lifeblood of medical centers, hospitals and doctors’ offices throughout the United States. Four health care workers have helped make Suntree Internal Medicine an important fixture in the Suntree community.

Luana Meskauskas, who has worked at Suntree Internal Medicine for a little more than three months, almost became a lawyer.

“I was set on going to law school,’’ Meskauskas said. “I had decided that law is what I would devote my life to so I could help disadvantaged people get some justice.’’

A life-changing incident at 17 altered those plans.

“The car in front of me flipped, and I pulled her out and performed CPR,’’ Meskauskas said. “I barely knew what I was doing as I had just barely acquired my CPR certification because of my life-guarding job. But it was as if someone else took over me and knew what to do. By the time the ambulance and fire department arrived, I had brought her back.’’

Three months later, Meskauskas received a letter from the woman.

“This was around the time when cell phones were barely a thing, so my email went on the police report,’’ Meskauskas said. “She thanked me for saving her life. Up until that point, I had never felt such a satisfying feeling. I became addicted to that feeling of saving somebody's life.

“I realized that the reason I wanted to help underserved people was because, in many ways, I felt underserved and very broken due to all of the abuse I endured when I was a child. I faced many dire and unfair situations without help. It was then that I realized helping others actually healed me. It

was a calling I couldn't deny.’’ Meskauskas is busy at Suntree Internal Medicine.

“As a provider, there are many roles I have to take in order to provide the best patient care I possibly can for all of my patients,’’ Meskauskas said. “Like other providers, I treat, diagnose and prescribe. I try to make sure my peers are OK and that they don't need help with anything. No task is too little for me. As with all jobs, there are administrative tasks as well. My tasks vary from performing assessments, to providing injections, to educating my patients, to making sure all of their paperwork is in order. My tasks are not limited to the tasks listed above; there is always something to do.’’

Meskauskas likes to run on outdoor trails and she recently began kite surfing. She also goes kayaking and does stand-up paddle boarding. She is an avid gardener.

After less than three months at Suntree Internal

Each day is different and has its unique challenges.

“I treat patients with acute and chronic conditions, educate patients on their diagnoses and use preventative medicine to improve patient well-being,’’ Hodge said.

Since she is new to the area, Hodge also has enjoyed exploring local restaurants on weekends. She likes to work out and winds down each day by reading a good book.

through every variation of nurse. Each was rewarding and I wanted to keep helping people in their time of need.

On the weekend, Gallego spends time with her husband and children and likes to dote upon her dogs. She also likes to try new places to eat in Brevard County and watch a movie to wind down.

Amber Jack has been at Suntree Internal Medicine for a little more than three months.

“I see the same-day patients that aren't feeling their best and need to be seen by a provider that day,’’ Jack said. “These patients mostly consist of patients that are sick or have injured themselves.”

Medicine, Sarah Hodge still is fascinated with Brevard County’s beaches.

“I spend my weekend at the beach,’’ said Hodge, who earned a bachelor of arts degree in dance at the University of Florida. “I enjoy running on the beach after work.’’

The physician’s assistant has always had a passion for medicine.

“I love the opportunity for collaboration between providers, caring for patients and the versatility

“My role is a little bit of everything,’’ Gallego said. “I may see a patient to review labs, because they are sick, to address a new health concern or even for a dressing change. It varies but, hopefully, I make a bad day better.”

Gallego is busy outside of the office.

“I enjoy staying active,’’ Gallego said. “I am a board member for CARE Brevard and assist with their social media.”

As a child, she wanted to be a doctor.

“I guess I found a different route,’’ Gallego said. “I started as a CNA right out of high school and moved up

Before becoming a nurse, Jack worked in accounting.

“I got into nursing to help people,” Jack said. “I want as many people as possible to have the ability to receive the healthcare assistance that they need. I'm just trying to do my part. I actually worked in accounting prior to my nursing career, but decided it wasn't for me.’’

Two dogs, a chinchilla bunny and a lot of chickens like attention, too.

“My most recent hobby is my chickens,’’ Jack said. “We started out with only four. Now, we have way more, including babies.’ VV

Good nutrition, stress management keys to optimal health

Stress management helped Dr. Jaya Prakash to overcome out-of-control diabetes.

Off diabetes medication for the past eight years, she is an Optavia coach helping others in similar health conditions.

Prakash works with people from all walks of life, but especially those with diabetes or other metabolic disorders, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

A retired medical doctor, Prakash has been a certified Optavia coach for the past eight years.

Optavia is a life transformation system focusing on health and wellness, including weight loss and management, nutrition and stress management because “we learn from others on the

same pathway,” said Prakash, who was influenced into becoming a doctor by her aunt, an internationally known pathologist.

The name Optavia stems from the words optimal and

via (life).

“I had diabetes which was not under control,” Prakash said. “This system has helped me to control my diabetes for the past eight years and to get off of my medications.”

“A lot of times, we think we are eating healthy and we are not,” she added. “Food has changed and we are not in balance.”

Prakash said her own situation was not bad food. She is a vegetarian. Her issue was not addressing stress.

“Stress affects all systems of our body, especially the daily chronic stress,” she said. “That’s the missing piece.”

Prakash explained the four main components of the Optavia program: structured nutrition, coaching, education and community support including webinars, coffee talks and a private Facebook group.

Prakash also offers monthly small-group stress management workshops. The next one will be held June 17.

She also works with small businesses to establish employee wellness plans.

Before moving to the United States, Prakash practiced medicine in Mumbai, India for 10 years. Upon relocating to the U.S., she taught courses on infectious disease and immunology.

“The infection control in hospitals is much tougher, especially in overcrowded hospitals and with patients that are very poor,” she said. Three years ago, she moved to Melbourne to be closer to her daughter who is an engineer at NASA. Since then, her granddaughter was born.

She has written a book: “Diabetes: What’s the Big Deal,” which is available on Amazon. Proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Hunger Project.

Ode to salads

The cornucopia of summer produce beckons everyone to champion healthy salads, as they’re endlessly adaptable. Branch out beyond the usual and go for gold — don’t just throw a salad together, create your own masterpiece!

Proteins — Contenders include salmon, chicken, sirloin or shrimp. Add beans, lentils, sautéed/grilled tofu or poached eggs instead of boiled.

Salad on salad — Chicken, tuna and egg salads topping leafy greens are no brainers. Roast cauliflower florets, cool and chop, add toasted walnuts, dried cranberries/raisins, chopped apple and toss in a mayo/yogurt, sweet currystained dressing and prepare to be converted.

Raw stuff — Cabbage, lettuces, kale, mesclun, baby arugula and spinach make the usual bulk. Don’t be boxed with what should be — ubiquitous cucumbers, tomatoes and croutons. They play a part, but branch out and embrace shredded carrots, bulb fennel and Brussel sprouts; sauté bell peppers and sweet onions; cooked fresh green beans, radishes. Roast veggies — corn, asparagus, sprouts, peppers, they add tremendous complexity. Include a pickled element, olives, beets, capers, pickled onions, marinated artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes. Grilled avocado is a game changer

Grains — Quinoa, bulgur, barley, brown rice, Israeli couscous add nuttiness, chewiness and texture. Not to mention, they’re superfoods. Cook grains in stock for added flavor with a dash of olive oil, salt and smashed garlic clove

Fruits — Berries, mangos, peaches, apples, pears, grapes and melons add sweetness to the savory mix

Add-ons — Toasted nuts, pepitas, crispy wontons give crunch and add dried, chewy fruit. Cheeses incorporate creaminess — feta, gorgonzola, parmesan, mozzarella balls. Use real-deal fresh herbs — mint, basil, cilantro, parsley, chives. VV

Decadent salad dressings

An award-winning salad deserves an award-winning dressing, as it’s the crown jewel that creates the masterpiece. Store bought is tempting, but they’re loaded with additives, sodium and sugar. Homemade is best and is good for up to two weeks, if refrigerated.

Use a blender and add salt and pepper to taste.

Basic Vinaigrette — 2 tsp Dijon, 1 tsp honey, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tbsp vinegar, 1 tsp Worcestershire, ½ cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), one garlic clove, parsley finely chopped

Creamy — ¼ cup of Greek yogurt, ½ avocado, fresh herbs, ¼ cup toasted walnuts, 3 tbsp EVOO, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tsp honey

Asian — ¼ cup EVOO, 3 tbsp rice wine vinegar, 1 tsp soy, 1 heaped tsp honey, juice of lime, 1 tsp sesame oil, 1 tbsp water, 1 tbsp tahini, one clove garlic minced, ½ bunch cilantro — stems included, pinch red pepper flakes

Caesar — Garlic clove minced, 1 tsp anchovy paste (don’t skip this), 1 tsp Dijon, 1 tsp Worcestershire, ½ cup of mayo, ½ cup parmesan, ½ tsp sugar, 1 tbsp water

Miso-Ginger — 2 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp miso, 2 tbsp lime juice, 1 tsp sesame oil, 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar, 1 tsp grated ginger, one garlic clove, 3 tbsp water, pinch of sugar

Vinegars/Acids — Balsamic, white balsamic (is milder and the golden color keeps things bright), red/white wine, sherry, champagne, ACV (apple cider) are good choices. Fresh lemon/lime juice.

Oils — EVOO is the queen of oils and there’s no substitute.

Incorporate a sweetener — honey, agave or brown sugar — it adds roundness and cuts acidity.

Space and the Lagoon: a step toward balance

Recently, we called for more communication and balance between our rapidly developing space industry and restoration of our precious Indian River Lagoon.

Well, I can report we have taken a step in that direction.

The picture shows the Indian River Lagoon Roundtable (irlroundtable. com/) table at Blue Origin’s April Earth Day event. There were about a dozen exhibitors at the event and several hundred Blue Origin employees attended.

Lagoon Straight Talk From the Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition

Bluewater Creative Group - Issue 4

with said they valued the IRL and understood that it was experiencing problems. A few did not know that there were any issues (algal blooms, fish kills, manatee starvation) to be concerned about.

VIERA VOICE Courtesy of BIRLC Michael Myjak, left, and Lew Kontnik prepare to engage Blue Origin staff at the April 21 Blue Origin Earth Day to share the current issues affecting the Brevard Indian River Lagoon.

Most of the employees we talked

This conversation led naturally into a discussion of what causes the problems. Past construction at KSC that cut water flow and other issues.

A current example is new construction of large structures with massive parking lots that produce huge amounts of freshwater runoff into the Lagoon, potentially reducing the salinity and stressing the ecology. This led to a discussion of Low Impact Development and other approaches to minimize impacts (epa. gov/nps/urban-runoff-low-impactdevelopment).

We also touched on the tendency of regulators to permit new projects in a one-off fashion, failing to track or manage the cumulative impacts of all the individual projects. This also led to talk about how commercial leaders such as Blue Origin could encourage more transparency and balance in the outstanding space development

occurring in Brevard and the Lagoon’s restoration we are working so hard to accomplish.

Most of our visitors understood and agreed that such a comprehensive and balanced process was indeed appropriate, especially recognizing that Blue Origin’s mission is about helping the earth (Our Blue Origin) by removing noxious and hazardous activities to space.

We thank Blue Origin for inviting local groups focused on the environment to engage with its staff. We see this as a small, but important step toward building more balance between our twin blessings: space and the Lagoon VV

Back to the drawing board

For the past six years, Recycle Brevard had a space on Cogswell Street in Rockledge.

The facility on Cogswell was the place where unwanted items were dropped off and hard-torecycle materials were brought in by businesses, organizations and individuals. They shared a common goal that aligned with one of Recycle Brevard’s — to reduce waste and keep materials out of the landfill.

On April 30, however, Recycle Brevard had to say goodbye to that address. The building where the facility was located had been sold and the quest to find a new space in the area began. Throughout the month of April, without a new location yet, Recycle Brevard donated or recycled most of the unwanted materials it previously stored in its Reuse Room, put what could fit in storage, and had to discard the rest. Its little free library was moved to 1845 Cogswell Street, outside the Brevard Achievement Center that kindly agreed to host the little library.

BEYOND the CURB

That was a big shift, one that was not planned but had to be executed. In that process, 5,020 pounds of material was donated or recycled in a month, almost doubling the amount recorded for the whole first quarter of 2023. That was a positive side effect.

Besides that, Maria Langan-Riekhof (Brookings) in her 2017 article reminds that “as President Kennedy suggested, out of crises can emerge new and incredible opportunities, particularly if traditional approaches and paradigms are questioned and challenged,” so this challenge can be turned into a good opportunity to get back to the drawing board — look back, reassess, rethink and create a new model to operate under.

After all, for its first six years, Recycle Brevard did not have a facility.

Born after a trip to

the landfill to answer a 6-year-old’s question — where does garbage go? — and a desire to help the environment and the communities in Brevard, Recycle Brevard started as an idea and lived through volunteering efforts around the community.

Years later, it became an organization that many count on when thinking of throwing away materials: reusable materials get another chance of being used and hard-to-recycle materials, from empty toothpaste tubes to pet food bags and cell phone cases, get recycled with Recycle Brevard.

After 12 years of sharing free resources, carrying out free presentations and educational programs, the desire to serve our communities has not faded and the search for a new physical space continues.

LEAD Brevard has shared information with its members and followers to help on that search and Recycle Brevard has reached out to the city of Rockledge, Brevard County and Brevard Public Schools, among other organizations,

Fulfilling people’s dreams one home at a time since 2007

and is waiting to hear back from them.

As Azim Shariff expressed in his TEDTalk, does working hard really make you a good person?

Recycle Brevard is in the market for finding the best collaborators and hopes to find a partner who truly believes in its mission and goals, willing to share the investment of building a better community.

In the meantime, Recraft Bazaar in Cocoa Village — will open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays starting Aug. 12 — is Recycle Brevard’s official office space and bazaar for

second-hand crafts and gifts but not a place for dropping off materials. We are working to have a place for that soon.

Thank you to all supporters who throughout the years continue to believe in Recycle Brevard’s mission and help make that a reality. Stick with us while we get ready for a new phase. VV

Georgina Love, who trains at Space Coast Olympic Fencing, made sports history recently when she won medals in two Olympic style fencing events — Epee and Foil.

In Olympic-style fencing, there are three weapons: Epee, Foil and Sabre. Love’s win in two weapons is a great feat.

Each row must contain the numbers 1 to 9; each column must contain the numbers 1 to 9; and each set of 3 by 3 boxes must contain the numbers 1 to 9.

“Georgina came to me six years ago with the goal of winning the Veterans Division at the Nationals,’’ Bucur said. “Through much hard work and dedication, she developed into a national contender. What she has accomplished in winning these two national titles simultaneously in two weapons is unprecedented. It is truly an outstanding accomplishment.’’ Bucur fenced for the Romanian National Team, and he later served in the U.S. Army, retiring at the rank of captain.

Love was down 0-5 early in the finals but came back and defeated Jeanette Starks-Faulkner of Connecticut in the finals of Foil in a thrilling 10-9 upset. She then defeated USA No.1 Valerie Asher of Washington D.C. in the finals of Epee by a lopsided 10-4 score.

With a gold medal in Foil and a bronze from the January event, Love has accrued enough points for the Veteran foil team. The two gold medals in Epee, the first one from January as well, again give Love enough points to qualify for the team.

“I am so thrilled,” Love said. “It was so nice getting messages from all my

friends in Florida and having my Space Coast fencers root for me. I’m so glad I didn’t let anyone down. When I called Maestro immediately after my win, he answered, ‘Yay.’ ” “Georgina has proved once again that age is just a number,” said Charlie Williams, a fellow Space Coast Olympic Fencing classmate. “If you have the will to learn, you will succeed. Even at the highest levels.”

Space Coast Olympic Fencing is in Viera. It offers classes for children in elementary school, middle school, high school, college, adults and seniors. For more information, check out SpaceCoastOlympicFencing. com. VV

Soup Shop coming to Addison Square

The Soup Shop has found its new location at Addison Square on the corner of Lake Andrew Drive and Ivanhoe Drive in West Viera.

The Soup Shop owner Julie Shipley started to look for a new location in Viera after she was notified that she would not be able to move forward with a lease at The Crossings.

“We got a call from Erik (Costin)at W+J (Construction) and he suggested we look at space at Addison Square as he had heard we were looking for a new location in Viera,” Shipley said.

“We now have two locations opening a month apart from each other and we’re hoping that will be by September of 2023,” Shipley said. “We’re waiting on permits to start in Addison.” VV

Council member's legacy lives on with Murrell Road

In 1964, long before the Internet was invented to provide everyone with an endless amount of instant information, along with a few dozen streaming services and thousands of shows, referred to as content, three major TV networks were dominant. Shows such as “Gunsmoke,” “Gilligan’s Island,” “The Andy Griffith Show” and, of course, the No. 1 show at the time, “Bonanza” were popular.

The Beatles stormed the country with their two big hits, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You.” Both songs were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles for that year. In 1964, we still went to the drive-in theater. People still engaged in conversations, since the Smartphone had yet to enter everyone’s lives.

In 1964, the population of Rockledge, the oldest city in Brevard County, was a little more than 4,000. But, the city was growing. And with it, dirt roads, like many other such roads in Brevard County, were being extended and more importantly, paved.

One such new road, in Rockledge that went from Barton Boulevard to Barnes Boulevard and later extended south to Wickham Road, needed a name. A review of the minutes from the March 18, 1964 meeting of the city council for Rockledge revealed that the council passed a motion and approved naming this street Murrell Road after one of its council members, Robert Lee Murrell.

Murrell, who was known for his dry sense of humor, served on the Rockledge council twice — the first time from 1938 to 1939 and then again from 1941 to 1974. He was also known as a watchdog of city finances. Little records about Murrell exist in City Hall archives. He is said to have owned a gas station in Rockledge.

In a 1993 meeting of the city council, former Rockledge City Councilman Roy H. Wall, who, at the time, was 104 years old, appeared before the council to express his gratitude for having a street named after him.

“This is especially (gratifying) because the street (would) intersect with Murrell Road, which is named after my good friend, the late

Robert L. Murrell,” Wall is recorded as saying.

Today, Murrell Road is a major thoroughfare connecting Barton Boulevard to Wickham Road.

Murrell was liked well enough to have a street named after him, and he had a good friend in Wall. However, there is much more

to Murrell than that.

Anyone who serves on a city council for 35 years has to make a lot of friends along the way. Sadly, however, Murrell died more than 35 years ago, as well as about everyone who served with him during that time.

Jennifer LeVasseur, the Rockledge City Clerk and

Public Relations Officer, said, “There is little else about him in our records. We don’t even think or know if he has any surviving family living in the area.”

Murrell spent 35 years in public service and helped guide Rockledge through years of rapid growth and development. VV
