Larry Schultz, Dr. Robert A. Anderson, Karl Holz and Allison Parrington thank Mickey Mouse. By Linda Wiggins
When the Dr. Robert A. Anderson Park in Rockledge was completed in August of 2006, it was built more for storm water drainage than recreation. Sixty of the 90 acres are under water, with drainage to a larger lake to the west keeping water off formerly flooded streets. On Saturday, July 28, more than 200 volunteers, two businesses, two nonprofits and
“This new playground is so creative and beautiful,” said longtime Rockledge City Manager Jim McKnight, as volunteers patted down the mulch bedding that will accommodate children with assistive devices such as wheelchairs. “The things it will do for the enjoyment and health of our children is incredible.” McKnight thanked project partners Disney Cruise Lines, Walt Disney Companies,
and Conservation (ROC) Foundation, which is run by former longtime mayor Larry Schultz. The large, complex and diverse play areas were designed with the wish lists of area children in mind, submitted in May. The playground was built in six hours. “When I arrived at 6:30 a.m. there was nothing there,” said Lisa Nicholas, community redevelopment specialist for the city. “Throughout the day it took shape amid 90 degree weather, with not
adults. Disney embraced the mission. “Only one in five children live within walking distance of a park or playground,” said Leslie Goodman, vide president of Disney Citizenship, which provided DisneyVonuntEARS to help build the playground. The play area reflects the cruise line’s nautical theme with a bow and stern as part of the rock-wall climbing area, stepping stones and a picket fence decorated with the words “play,” “fun” and “grow” in the Disney crew’s native languages from

Suntree Carrabba’s debuts summer facelift By Angela Smith
With summer quickly coming to an end, so too are the renovations that have taken over the Suntree Carrabba’s Italian Grill since mid-July. On television the remodel of the chain eatery could have been called Extreme Makeover: Restaurant Edition for its fast transformation and updated layout and look. Proprieter Dave McMillan saw the facelift as a necessary leap into a hopeful future for the popular grill. “It’s definitely a change, but one we hope everyone will enjoy,” McMillan said, “and so far, we’ve had nothing but support from our customers.” The upgrade marks the first of two revamping phases the Suntree location will undergo, hoping to appeal to a wider demographic in a time where eating out has declined with the economy. The restaurant, which opened in 2003, already known for its appetizing menu, open-style kitchen and friendly staff, will now be known for its brighter color tones, contemporary design with exposed wooden beams, updated

window treatments and elegant wine displays with overall improved lighting. Regional Vice President Roy Vollick said the purpose is the customers. “Even though we’ve changed the look and it’s more upscale for diners, we still have parts that they’ll remember,” Vollick said. He pointed to family photos on the wall in the corner of the restaurant. “That’s our family table, a key element in the plan,” he said. But fresh paint, new lighting, seating space and overall ambiance of the grill aren’t the only features
added; the technology behind the scenes also has been updated with a hostess station that will make seating a breeze on busy nights. Still, despite the renovations, Vollick and McMillan insist nothing else has changed in the way of food, staff or prices. “The passion for the food and the commitment to the quality is still the same,” McMillan said. “It’s the overall feel, which will be more comfortable and classier, that’s changed for the better.” For more information, call 321-253-0991. Viera High School’s freshmen weren’t the only new faces in the crowd when the school opened its doors last month for the fall semester. The campus also welcomed new staff members, including assistant principal Debra Guenzi. For Guenzi, it was Viera’s school pride that drew the experienced administrator VIERA VOICE Angela Smith into her new role at the Debra Guenzi plans to use her years of six-year-old school. experience in administration to start “There’s very much a sense of community here; new traditions at the school. it doesn’t seem like a big impersonal high school,” Guenzi said. “So I’m excited about getting started with the new year.” Guenzi, who joined the staff during the summer after spending more than a decade at Jackson Middle School in Titusville as an administrator, has years of experience at other area schools as a business and science teacher. While she said it wasn’t an easy decision to leave a place she worked for more than a decade, she said Viera just felt right. “It’s a big change and there’s a lot to get used to,” Guenzi said. “There were almost 600 students at Jackson and here at Viera there are almost 2,000, but I’m looking forward to it and the staff has been nothing but wonderful.” Guenzi plans to use her lengthy experience to get things rolling this school year and in the future with new ideas and traditions she hopes the staff and students will enjoy. Some include benches in the common area where students gather before classes in the morning and brick pavers with names and class years engraved on them, as well as an expansion of the Myles Freeberg memorial garden, named for a student. “It’s exciting to know that you can be a part of something that’s growing and evolving,” Guenzi said. “I already have ideas about graduation. I’m ready.” For now, the new assistant principal will oversee the facilities and is eager to hear what students have to say. “I have to find my niche here and I’m already hearing from students,” she said. “Right now, my main concern is to make sure the students and teachers have everything they need to succeed, meaning anything from textbooks to making sure the building is clean and there’s good food in the cafeteria because, in the end, it all matters.” VV

Hoops over 40 thrill at the Viera Community Center
VIERA VOICE Angela Smith
Team Kangaroo Electric (in black) faces off against Lightning Science (in orange) of the over-40 basketball league at Viera Regional Community Center. The men say the game is a great way to stay active and healthy. By Angela Smith
Walking into the gymnasium Monday evenings at Viera Regional Community Center now through the end of the month will be like stepping into an ageless basketball wonderland. But don’t expect to see any young ballers on the court. For the fourth consecutive year, the gym will be home to a different kind of basketball league, the over-40 crowd. “There was a need in the community for a place
where people could come play basketball together as a team and we set out to fulfill that,” said Kristin Swenson, community center coordinator. “We first started with a more open league with all ages, but it became apparent that we needed to separate the 40-and-over group and it’s been successful ever since.” The annual tournament for this age group that’s already underway, pits men nearing their 40s to men well into their 70s against one another for two 20-minute halves.
The game may has the same regulations, competition and end-result as other leagues. However, the players who once enjoyed the sport as children are now older. Some are parents and grandparents, but they are just not quite ready to hang up their basketball sneakers. “It’s become a league where it’s competitive, yet there’s still camaraderie among the players and teams,” Swenson said. “It’s a fun mix of them encouraging one another to be better and to compete, but also a friendly atmosphere where they can interact with others their own age.” However, this six-team league has become much more than an opportunity for the men to shoot hoops and hang out. Some see the league as an opportunity to stay in shape. For William Logan, captain of team Kangaroo Electric, playing the game meant a shorter recovery after a recent knee surgery. “Because I was as active as I was, I was back playing after six weeks. I wouldn’t have recovered as quickly as I did if I hadn’t been playing,” Logan said. “So I think it’s a sport for everybody at any age. You just have to get out there and do it.” For Brawlers team captain Chuck Radloff, the game is something to shake up his regular routine and feel free of the daily grind.

Rentals in associations receive mixed reviews
Association Living By Frank Kneiser CMCA, AMS, PCAM
Renting and leasing in community associations is a fact of life that is often met with mixed reactions. Proactive communication with both owners and tenants avoids most of the pitfalls. Owners have a responsibility to make sure their tenants are aware of the rules and regulations as well as the benefits of the association. Many associations require owners to provide a copy of the lease to the management. It has been my experiences that some associations actually require landlordowners utilize a specific lease.
Often, board members consider renters as less desirable than owners, which is unfortunate because renters have the same potential to make positive contributions to the association. Occasionally, I will hear of a potential renter deciding against renting a unit because they do not want the regulations and restrictions. With few exceptions, tenants have the same rights as owners. Renters should be allowed to take advantage of all of the association’s amenities. Some associations restrict the number of units that are leased or
set a certain percentage of the total. It is common for lending institutions to consider the number of leased units as part of a mortgage application. The number of leased units is frequently a question on a title company’s estoppel request. Owners, be sure to keep your tenants and management informed and associations should strive to treat renters with the respect they deserve. Renting and leasing in community associations is a fact of life that is often met with mixed reactions.
It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com. VV

There’s no shortage of good restaurants in Brevard County. For most, there’s not enough time to find all the places for a good meal. The ninth annual Great Taste at Suntree promises to make the process a little easier. For the second consecutive year, the event will be held at the Suntree Country Club. The Rotary Club of Suntree will host the event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Children’s Hunger Project will receive all net proceeds from the gathering. Tickets are $30 per person. “This gives everyone the opportunity to network and experience restaurants they’ve never gone to,’’ said Joyce Hathaway, who is the chairperson of the event. “Trying the different food samples brings you to different restaurants than in the past.’’ VIERA VOICE Photo It also helps children, whose only Great Taste at Suntree event chair Joyce Hathaway sells the regular meals might be the ones eaten first ticket to Rich Egan, president of the Suntree Rotary Club. during the school day. Local divers make splash at nationals
“It’s amazing what these kids can do.” Sarah Rousseau, who competed in the 12U division, finished fifth in both the 3-meter and 1 meter dives. Ali Giuliani, an 11-yearold diver placed third in the 11U division for the 3-meter dive and came in sixth in the 1-meter dive. Olympic champions have to start somewhere. For 12-year-old Viera resident Sarah Rousseau, that means diving her way from Florida to Georgia where she competed at the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Diving National Championships in Huntersville, N.C., in late July. Rousseau was one of six local divers from the Sunrise Springboard Diving Club who brought home impressive results. “It was an exciting time for them,” Sarah’s mom, Lynette Rousseau, said. “They all work so hard to get to this point and it’s nice to see them achieve some of their goals.” The results came as no surprise to the team after training twice a week in the
pool all summer at Satellite Beach High School. “It’s nice to see it all pay off,” Lynette Rousseau said.

Navy, Air Force both possible choices for VHS student By George White
Many high school students would jump at the chance to visit one of the U.S. military service academies. Viera High School senior Kyle Post, 17, got to visit two—the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.—in the same summer. Next up for Post to complete the application process for each academy, including obtaining the sponsorship of local elected officials. Having visited both, Post said he comes away with a new appreciation for the services. He said he expects to attend one of them and will make his final decision by the end of 2012. “They’re both very high choices for me. I’m still considering both,’’ he said. But, with all other aspects being equal, Post’s dream of becoming a military pilot may tip the scales toward the U.S. Air Force Academy. He’s currently learning to fly general aviation aircraft at Merritt Island Airport. “I want to fly and I hope to be a jet pilot, but any aircraft would be fine,’’ Post said. VV

Everything adds up for math whiz Vaske By Jeff Navin
Dominick Vaske’s love of math has helped the younger students he tutors on a weekly basis. It also is bound to make him successful in his future pursuits. During the summer, the Viera High School junior was Patrick Air Force Base’s Youth of the Year as part of the 2012 Air Force Boys & Girls Clubs of America Youth of the Year Award ceremonies in Washington, D.C. Vaske served 150 volunteer hours at Patrick Air Force Base this summer and another 30 at the Viera Community Center in the spring as part of the homework helpers program. “My background is in math,’’ said Vaske, a 4.0 GPA student. “I not only helped them, but I helped myself. Some were fifth and sixth graders, and I had the occasional fourth or third grader.’’ According to Vaske, math has an undeserved reputation. “All of my friends hate math,’’ the 16-year-old Vaske said. “They think, ‘The teacher has it out for me.’ I think it’s real easy if they try to understand the basics. That’s when it becomes
much easier to do - if you get the hang of it. There has been an overall biased attitude toward math. So many students choose not to succeed when they take Algebra I in eighth grade.’’ Vaske hopes the homework helpers program can dispel some of those beliefs. “My advice is to take advantage of those types of programs,’’ Vaske said. “When it clicks, you can do almost anything in math.’’ At PAFB’s Youth Center, Vaske did almost everything to help the summer program for children ranging in age from 6 to 12. “It was the same program I did when I was younger,’’ said Vaske, whose parents are Michael and Xiomara Vaske. “We try to be good role models and to promote a healthy lifestyle of exercise. It’s not just movies and board games. We made sure they went to the gym at least once a day.’’ “The kids would pick the games, but we’d make sure that if they picked something too often, we’d branch out,’’ Vaske said. “We taught soccer one week, dance, volleyball and we’d also throw the football around.’’

“They’re so used to TV. It’s fun to broaden them in other areas.’’ A hefty course load, which includes Pre-Calculus and Physics Honors, will keep Vaske busy this school year. He hopes to rejoin the wrestling team, a sport he participated in as a freshman. Once the school year concludes, he likely will take part in one of the many summer internships offered by Viera High’s Academy of Business & Finance. ‘’I’d like to try something in engineering,’’ the 5-foot-10, 152-pound Vaske said. “I want a hands-on feel to see what it’s like to be an engineer.’’ The University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are two of his top choices for college, but Vaske says he would be more than comfortable at the University of Florida. Paul Hackmann, Vaske’s ninth-grade geometry teacher at Viera High, has been a mentor. “He went to Florida and he was Navy ROTC there,’’ Vaske said. “He has reminded me that, even though it is a big school, it is possible to find a group of friends to make the place smaller and easier to handle. When it comes to math, I listen to him closely. He runs the

Viera Math Team, where we compete against other schools.’’ Michael Vaske is a Navy Commander, who works at Patrick Air Force Base for the Department of Intelligence. “I plan to join Navy ROTC, but I’d be open to Air Force ROTC in college,’’ said Vaske, who roots for all of the sports teams at the University of Florida, the Minnesota Vikings and both the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat. VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy football coach Mark Ainsley said this year’s Tigers team is much more physical than last year’s team that went 6-4 in his first season. By Carl Kotala
It may be a little early to start making Thanksgiving Day plans, but members of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy football team are hoping they can all be at a big family gathering that has nothing to do with turkey. They want to be at practice. “In my three (previous) years, we’ve never been to the playoffs,” senior center Brandon Collins said. “We’ve been close. Last year, we were real close. But we’ve never been to a playoff game. That’s definitely our goal, to be practicing on Thanksgiving.” The Tigers went 6-4 last year in coach Mark Ainsley’s first season, but now the getting-to-know-each other-period is over. Senior

lineman Dylon Collins said the players feel much more comfortable with their coach this season and have a better idea of what to expect in certain situations. This year, Holy Trinity expects to have success. “We feel very positive about the year,” coach Mark Ainsley said. “We lost some talent from last year, but I think we’re actually a better team. We’re a better overall group. We’re not going to heavily rely on one or two guys. We’ve got some weapons. I really expect some big things out of us.” Leading the way will be senior triplets Brandon, Dylon and Ryan Collins, who will make up three-fifths of the Tigers’ offensive line. Senior Dan O’Brien gives Holy Trinity four returning starters up front and

transfer Garrett Heinlen has been fitting in nicely. Another transfer, sophomore J’v’on Butler, is expected to play a big role at linebacker while senior transfer Johnny Gomez will step in at quarterback. Freshman Josh Harden will start at tailback, while seniors Marques Burgman (WR/CB) and Nick Hamer (RB/LB) will play important roles as well. While the offensive line will be a big strength of the team, the defensive line and linebacking corps should stand out as well. “I’m very happy with our defense,” senior linebacker/ tight end Mike Boyle said. “I think we’ll definitely be all over the ball. I don’t think there are many teams that will be able to do much against our defense.” VV

Viera High offensive line ready to shoulder the load
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
The Viera High School football team has set a school record for wins in each of the past two seasons. If the Hawks can keep that up, a playoff spot could be within reach. By Carl Kotala
If the Viera High School football team is going to have a breakthrough season in 2012, the Hawks will need a big year from their offensive line. Fortunately, that’s where they also have the most experience. “We’ve played with each other since we were freshmen, so we all know each other well,” senior center Zach Schwarz said. “We’re real close (as) a unit and hopefully, that will translate onto the field with good communication and everything like that.” With five seniors starting on the offensive line, and three of four seniors starting on the defensive side, the Hawks hope this will be the season they make their first playoff appearance. Viera has set a school
record for wins in each of the past two years, going 4-6 last season under coach Kevin Mays, who was hired just weeks before the season started. Whereas last year’s team had to learn everything on the run, this year’s group has had a full off-season to learn Mays’ system. “I’m way ahead of where I was last year, but it’s still gong to be a new process for me because we graduated 24 seniors,” Mays said. “But so far, we had a real good summer. You can tell the difference on the field.” Viera’s key returners from last year’s team are Schwarz; senior wide receiver/running back Jalen Jackson; senior defensive lineman Hunter Prussel; senior defensive end Sebastian Noel; senior defensive end Jake Nield; junior defensive back Cody
Dentmon; junior running back Connor Prater; junior wide receiver Ryan Ferland; senior linebacker Joel Fullum; senior linebacker Chris Allison and senior guard Gio Brunelle. Others who have a chance to start are among several key newcomers. That list includes senior running back/wide receiver transfer Chris Barkley; freshman receiver Marcus McClain; freshman defensive back Tre Nixon and sophomore defensive back Devon Nixon. “We’re definitely on the rise,” Schwarz said. “I think if we execute and keep working hard like we’re doing, we can have a great season (and) just keep getting better like we have been.” VV

Viera boys golf has drive to reach state tournament
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Duran Golf Club – Viera High School senior Ben Hellmuth can easily drive the ball 330 yards, making him perhaps the longest hitter in Brevard County. The Hawks’ No. 1 golfer is a Player of the Year candidate. By Carl Kotala
Ben Hellmuth remembers the early days of his Viera High School golf career, when just getting around the course was a challenge. “When I first came out, my sophomore year, I would shank it and barely be able to get around,” the senior said. “(I’ve made a) big improvement since then.” That’s for sure. With dedication that has him hitting golf balls every single day, Hellmuth will not
only go into this season as Viera’s No. 1 player, he is also a Player of the Year candidate and capable of driving the ball 330 yards. “Ben’s length is probably the longest in the county,” Hawks coach Paul Bentley said. “He can hit it farther than anybody.” While driving the ball obviously won’t be a problem for Hellmuth, it’s the game from 150 yards in that will tell just how good he can become. Getting a chance to practice at Duran Golf Club certainly gives

him a chance to work on that part of his game. “I can hit it far, but I try to work on my short game as much as possible, because really, from 150 (yards) in is where all the scoring is done,“ Hellmuth said. “Just being out here on the par 3 helps.” While Hellmuth will serve as the Hawks’ top player, there are quality players behind him in returning seniors Justin Taylor and Christian Eraso, plus up-andcoming juniors Alex Liles and Kevin Keller. Bentley said there are roughly six players competing for the sixth spot, including a number of freshmen who could have a big impact on the team down the road. Last year’s Viera team won the district championship, but did not make it out of regionals. This season, the Hawks will have a distinct advantage because the regionals will be played on their home course at Duran. “I think it’s our best chance to make it to state,” Hellmuth said. “We have a fairly strong team this year, and hosting regionals might just give us the advantage we need. But still, hard work is what we need to put into it.” VV

As freshmen on the Viera High girls’ golf team two years ago, Samantha Dahl and Carli Ford know what it’s like to win a state championship. It’s an experience they would like to share with their current teammates. “That’s definitely a drive for us,” said Dahl, now a junior. “Carli and I were both here the year we won state, and it was really awesome to see the results of all the seniors’ hard work. I think it’s definitely a huge factor in our motivation.

“For the other girls, hearing us talk about that, seeing the girls come back and visit, listening to coach, it’s been good. We don’t want it to be a one-time thing.” To make that happen, of course, the Hawks will have to qualify for the state tournament, something they weren’t able to do last year despite winning a fourth consecutive district championship. They would like to make it five district titles in a row, of course, and use it as a stepping stone for another

This Holy Trinity Tigers golf team has plenty of bite trip to the state tournament. “Honestly, I think we’re going to have a really good team this year,” Ford said. “The team is very motivated. We have a good dynamic going on. We all love each other. It feels like a family.” Though the team will miss last year’s top player, Mary Dawson, there is definitely enough talent on board to help the Hawks make it to Harbor Hills Country Club in Lady Lake for the state championship tournament Oct. 30 and 31. The Hawks will be building around four young players—Dahl and Ford, Kaycee Gray (sophomore) and Katie Jones (junior)− as they try to maintain their position as one of the premier programs, not only in the county, but in the region. “I think, if we play like we’re capable of playing, we can definitely make some noise,” Hawks coach Greg Ford said. “We’re a year improved from last year, when we finished third in the conference. “We’ve added two pretty decent golfers. We’ve got to continue to improve throughout the season, that’s the main thing.” VV

Some high school golf teams struggle to field a strong lineup behind the No. 1 player. That’s not going to be a problem for the Holy Trinity boys this season. With seniors Kerry Sweeney and Ryan Allison competing for the top position, there also is plenty of talent behind them in the form of junior Matt Allison and senior Casey Nierenberg. “They could all be number ones, really,” Tigers coach Ron Bentfield said. They’re coming off the best season in school history and they’ve got 10 players back. If you think the expectations around the Viera High School girls volleyball program are pretty big this year, you are right. “I think it’s now just a new set of things that we’re going to have to work on,” Hawks coach Sarah Sykes said. “Now it’s going to be, because we were district champions, because we had our best season ever, now the challenge is how do we go up from here? How do we keep improving? I think it’s just a matter of continuously challenging the girls, and pushing the girls so they don’t get comfortable.” Seniors Shelby Jelinek (libero) and Christine Moore (outside hitter) certainly understand what to expect coming off a year in which the Hawks went 20-6 and won their first district title before losing in the regional quarterfinals. “I guess you just can’t let it get in your head,” Jelinek said. “You have to be very open with each other. Listen, this is going to be a very tough season. We have to live up to it, but we can’t spazz out in games. We’ve just got to put forth our best efforts and do the best we can.” With Jelinek, Moore, junior outside hitter Alex Bynum and sophomore setter Elaina Valencia leading the way, the Hawks are clearly the favorites to repeat as district

Viera High seniors Shelby Jelinek (left) and Christine Moore are two big reasons why the Hawks have a chance to repeat as district champion and go further than any other Viera team has gone in the past season.
champions. However, the team has its sights set on going further than any other Viera team has before. Moore and Jelinek, who played so much volleyball during the summer they barely had a day off, certainly appear ready to ensure the Hawks don’t get complacent as they reach for new heights. “This is the year we have
a giant target on our back,” Moore said. “Our girls need to work that much harder, and keep in mind that everyone’s gunning for us, so we’ve got to give that extra (effort). We’ve already overcome the challenge of getting to know each other. Now, it’s just really taking what we have and using it.” VV
Savannah Hicks and 6-foot3 senior opposite hitter Izzy Carmona, who has verbally committed to Florida State. Junior Gabby Dixon (6-2) will move from the middle to the outside and junior Chelsea Pruitt will see time at opposite hitter. Among the team’s eight newcomers are sophomore libero Jenny Ryan, sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Hicks, freshman setter Hailey Vice and freshman middle blocker Tristin Kott. While the Tigers have a number of young players, including two freshmen and five sophomores, they have plenty of club-level experience. “I think all the key players have a higher volleyball IQ this year, so we know what we’re doing,” Carmona said. “It’s clear to us now, so we
can help other people.” While winning a fifth district title is certainly on the Tigers’ to-do list, so is erasing the memory of last year’s defeat in the regional quarterfinals. “We’re very focused this year,“ Savannah Hicks said. “The way we ended last season was disappointing for us. We definitely wanted to go further. We know what we have to do this year, and what we need to work at to get stronger to play at the higher levels of competition.” As seniors, Carmona and Hicks are doing their best to make sure the team stays on point this season. Make no mistake, the Tigers have their eyes on the biggest prize. “We want to see our team succeed this year,“ Savannah Hicks said. “We want our state rings.” VV

High expectations are nothing new for the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academygirls volleyball team, but this year’s team has a reason to be thinking big. The Tigers are deeper, more focused and yes, a little hungrier than they were last season when they went 17-6 and captured their fourth consecutive district championship. “I think we’ll actually be a little bit stronger in some of the support positions than we were last year,” coach Patrick Barrett said. “I think our level across the board has gotten better. We’re pretty excited that we could have a good year this year.” Holy Trinity has four returning players, led by senior outside hitter

Area schools prosper when parents volunteer By Linda Wiggins
The first day at Viera, Suntree and south Rockledge schools was a prelude to the ultimate success of their ability to educate students. Parents were nearly as numbered as their children on campuses. “The high level of parental support in a child’s education is the number-one attribute to A-grade schools on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test,” said Ruth McCleeary, administration manager for Manatee Elementary School in Viera. All Viera Suntree elementary schools, Manatee, Suntree, Quest and Ralph Williams, learned they maintained their A grades on the FCAT in July, while Viera High School officials anticipate learning by November whether the school
maintained its A grade. According to McCleeary, one reason is that the high socioeconomic ratio in homes surrounding the schools allows for a greater percentage of one-income families, allowing one spouse to invest more time in homework, enrichment activities and volunteering. April Murray, outgoing vice president and current member of the Parent Teacher Organization at Suntree Elementary School, met with other parents at an impromptu parent meeting the first day of school, after they tucked their children into classes and dropped off volumes of schools supplies, many donating extras to supplement class needs and those of needy students. “When you volunteer at school, it helps everyone―
teachers, administration and students. There are so many different opportunities for parents to support our school through the year, many requiring a one-time commitment,” Murray said. “If each parent pitches in just a little, great things can be accomplished as a group.” Parents who cannot volunteer during school hours can help out at home, whether it be taking home students’ papers to check for the teacher or working with their own child, according to Brevard Schools spokesperson Michelle Irwin. “Checking homework, creating inexpensive items for class use and reinforcing literacy by reading daily with your child are a few ways parents can support classroom instructional strategies,” Irwin said.

Finding host families is the other part of the equation, with most of them being parents of Holy Trinity students. Beverly Wheeler formerly worked at Holy Trinity. Even though her children are grown, Wheeler still participates in the program. This year, she
opened her home to three girls from China. “It’s different than what I thought because the Chinese culture is a little different. They are more private and study a lot. They are not like American teenagers at all. They’re very polite and really respect your privacy. You really have to work to engage them,’’ Wheeler said. Jason, Jonathan and Danielle Ouellette hope to take over the family orthodontic practice one day from their father, Dr. Paul Ouellette. By George White
Being in the dental profession is all in the family for Dr. Paul Ouellette, founder of The Dental Specialists of Central Florida, with seven offices including a new location centering on children’s braces at 1715 Berglund Lane in Viera. Following in his footsteps are his offspring, Jonathan, Jason, and Danielle. In the Brevard County area for more than 30 years, the main office of the practice was located on Merritt Island. Other locations include Satellite Beach, Titusville, Melbourne and now Viera. Ouellette said, “We’re a well-established provider in this area. The Viera office will be centered around kids who are getting braces, whereas the other offices handle both children and adults.” The overall long-range plan is to eventually have his children join the practice, thereby giving him a chance to teach half-time at Jacksonville University. “I have been a place holder for the kids. It’s just the best to have your kids emulate you. The practice will always stay open with them,’’ he said. In addition to keeping the family business going into perpetuity, Ouellette said he is most proud to have established a new program called Earn Your Smile. In the program, patients and parents have the opportunity to earn “Smile Voucher” credits by donating their time to qualified local nonprofit charities. “An online Earn Your Smile Voucher form can be downloaded and printed if a patient or parent wishes to participate in our family’s pay-it-forward program,” Ouellette said. Patients and parents can earn up to $1,200 credit to be used towards comprehensive orthodontic treatments. “It’s been proven that, by helping work to pay for the braces, the patients cooperate better, brush their teeth better and their parents are excited to have that much money taken off the overall cost,’’ he said. When one door closes, another opens; but it was an Internet window for Viera resident Ray Cornelius who was searching for a new Rotary club. Cornelius, a former member of the Viera Rotary, which dissolved earlier this year due to lack of self-sufficiency and declining membership, decided to go in a different direction when continuing his philanthropy and Rotary lineage. With technology at his fingertips, connecting with other business and professional leaders who volunteer their time and talents serving communities and the world has become as simple as a few taps on the keyboard and the click of a mouse. Soon the do-gooder found his future with the Rotary eClub of the Southeast USA and Caribbean, allowing him to take his good deeds to the next level—online. “I think the Internet is a hub of a lot of things and why not this? I think a club like this provides a good alternative for the future and as we become busier, more and more people will head this way,” Cornelius said. Each week, Cornelius networks at home with humanitarians from Georgia to the Caribbean, where thousands of individuals unite for one cause: promoting world peace through public service. Despite existing in cyberspace, eClubs like Cornelius’ are still considered equal to traditional clubs found locally or across the globe and are affiliated with a Rotary District. Also, it gives Rotarians with physical disabilities or scheduling restraints the opportunity to stay engaged, connected and inspired through Rotary service and friendship. “It’s sort of like a Facebook, but a Facebook in Rotary. You attend meetings by going online and read the weekly announcements,” Cornelius said. “In a traditional Rotary, you would have personal interaction with other members, but here, it’s all through the Internet.” As all Rotary clubs do, the eClub meets weekly through an online forum, performs service projects in local and international communities, supports The Rotary Foundation and enjoys fellowship—something that intrigued Cornelius who volunteers as a lawyer for the Brevard County Legal Aid office in Rockledge. “I have been a Rotarian for a long time and looked forward to the challenge of joining a Rotary club where there were members from other parts of the world,” he said. “The way this club helps Viera and the Brevard County area is that through me and my participation and efforts here and what I do, like the legal aid, there’s an exchange of ideas and communication. That’s pretty much what Rotary is about when it comes to service.” For more information, visit rotaryeclubone.org. VV

Toastmasters hone their speaking and leadership skills

Toastmasters International could be described as the best self-directed, selfhelp program that exists. Featuring some 13,000 clubs around the world
and membership in excess of 270,000, Toastmasters develop in a learn-by-doing workshop style where participants hone their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure atmosphere. The prevailing idea is that if you want to communicate better, there is no better place to do it than
6th annual Daffodil Gala
Toastmasters. Residents of Viera have a few choices for an evening meeting that will best accommodate their needs. The Viera/Suntree Toastmasters club meets the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at the Wuesthoff Reference Lab near the intersection of Spyglass Hill and Murrell roads. For more information, please check out the club’s webpage at vierasuntree. toastmastersclubs.org. The following officers have been installed at the Viera/ Suntree Toastmasters Club for the 2012-2013 season: President, Steven King, ACB/ ALB; VP Education, Jake Schmalenberger, CC; VP Membership, Eric Barnhart, ACB/ALB; VP Public
Relations, Mike Friedman, TM; Secretary, Cindy Giamarino, ACB; Treasurer, Doug Tambor, DTM; SAA Dave Staal, TM. Steven King, a four-year veteran of Toastmasters, believes that Toastmasters can give anyone the confidence to speak when needed. “If you think about it, all of life is a type of salesmanship. You are trying to sell the ideas of your company to promote business or you are trying to sell your friends and family on your interests. Toastmasters can give you the boldness not only to speak with confidence but also to help you tailor your message to fit your audience. VV

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer By Wendy Scheuring
Team Amazing Grace will form a team for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Oct. 20 at the Space Coast Stadium. There is no fee to participate in the 5K walk. Participants are welcome to donate to the cause and to encourage family members and friends to support them. “We formed the team four years ago when one of our jazzercise class friends, Grace, who had been in remission, passed away,” Sandra Williams said. The color pink is synonymous with breast cancer awareness. On the day of the event, onlookers will see thousands
of walkers wearing pink T-shirts and even pink bras, forming a sea of pink, to raise breast cancer awareness. “If you raise $100 or more, you get a T-shirt from the American Cancer Society,” Kathie Andrews said. The team committee comprised of Debi Laughlin, Nancy Snyder, Kathie Andrews, Susie Camposano, Sandra Williams and Demie Andrews met in a jazzercise class taught by Snyder at Hope Episcopal Church in Suntree. They have been working on fundraising events since forming. On Sept. 29, the Pink Dreams fourcourse luncheon with wine will be in the pink dining room of the Carnival Dream at Port Canaveral. The luncheon is limited to 100 guests. For individuals,
the luncheon donation is $25. Corporate tables of 10 are also available. Table sponsors will be listed on a tri-fold tent that will appear on each table. RSVP by Monday, Sept. 10. There also will be a drawing to win a three-to four-day Carnival cruise, which was donated by Defense Suppliers of Cape Canaveral. The winner has up to 18 months to book VIERA VOICE photo the cruise. The Ride 4 A Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Event will take place on September 23 at The Shoppes of Suntree. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and cyclists will be riding to support breast cancer patients or to remember those who lost their lives due to the disease. Wells Fargo Advisors and Cancer Care Centers of Brevard Foundation Inc. are hosting the non-competitive eight-, 30- or 46-mile bike ride. The cost to ride is $35 and proceeds will go to the Cancer Care Centers of Brevard Foundation, Inc. “We help the uninsured and underinsured by helping them with their household expenses, such as their rent or mortgage, electric, water, or cell phone bills, said Marta Fiol, Marketing Manager, Cancer Care Centers of Brevard. T-shirts, beer glasses, and food and drinks are provided for participants. On September 22, Charlie and Jake’s will be donating 10% of their sales from 5 pm. to close of business at “October Breast. On the day of the event, Club Performax is offering a free spinning class for non-riders, and there will be a pancake breakfast catered by Mary Lee’s Lunch and Catering of Melbourne. The event is sponsored by Revolutions Cyclery and Space Coast Velo Sport. During the event, roadside assistance and minimal technical support for cyclists will be just a cell phone call away. Last year’s event had 200 riders registered, according to Fiol, but only 24 die-hard riders showed because of monsoon conditions. Ginger Twigg, Event Coordinator and Co-owner of Revolutions Cyclery, is hoping for sunny skies for this year’s ride. Ride 4 A Breast is not a cycling race. “It’s a personal accomplishment, said Twigg. For more information or to register, go to www. cccfoundationinc.org. VV

European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)
By Charlotte and Charlie Corbeil
Charlie Corbeil
Florida Master Naturalist pbase.com/charlie_corbeil
The starling, an invasive species from Europe, was introduced to North America in the 19th century. Immigrants yearned to establish some bird species from their homelands. Moreover, starlings were released in New York City’s Central Park by Shakespeare enthusiasts who were eager to launch every bird mentioned in his works. Subsequently, more than 200 million
starlings inhabit the continent. At the present time, this ubiquitous transplant threatens rural and populated areas. For example, it forages on agricultural crops, such as fruit and livestock feed; Annual damage is in the millions. Also, it hosts parasites: ticks, mites, fleas, and lice. Such organisms infest people and animals. Furthermore, roosts release abundant droppings which are malodorous, slippery, and corrosive. Feces spawn deadly diseases: meningitis, salmonella, and encephalitis. Most alarming is the fact that a flock of starlings—a migratory gathering sometimes numbers in the thousands—can cause catastrophic damage when drawn into the engine of an aircraft in flight. In addition, this
troublesome creature aggressively evicts native birds from their nests. Eggs and chicks are destroyed. Recently, at the Viera Wetlands, a starling pressured a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers out of the cavity of a dead palm. Four weeks after the takeover, an adult starling fed its two chicks at the site (see photo). Although the starling is vilified, it is sometimes acquired as a pet. The appeal is this bird’s ability to vocalize—it is a relative of the myna bird. It can mimic human speech and imitate the calls of 20 different bird species. When stimulated by the activities of nest building, it delivers varied and prolonged vocals from inside the hollow. Possibly, vocalization is its only charm. VV
Young magicians meet their idols at Las Vegas Convention

Christopher Quintero, Austin Dunlop, Jason Knight and mentor Dr. Dan Ezell were honored at the Magic Dove Magic Shop on Aug. 10, 2012. By Martha Masiello
The Magic Dove Magic Shop in Cocoa Village inspired three local teens to pursue their interest in magic at an early age. As a result, the boys accepted recognition and a certificate of charter for the newly formed Society of Young Magicians Club (SYM), a branch of Society of American Magicians, (SAM) at the July Las Vegas convention. Harry Houdini served as president of the Society of American Magicians from 1917 until his death in 1926. When Chas Hackmann graduated from Viera High School in 2010, he thought he might have to put his trumpet away, although he loved playing. Hackmann was preparing for college life at the University of Florida and he knew majoring in mechanical engineering would place high demands on his time. He also knew he really liked playing in the marching band and he didn’t want to abandon that part of his life. He said, “If you like what you’re doing and you’re good at it, don’t give up. See where it takes you.” Because Hackmann didn’t
he will be marching with the Gators again during his junior year, but that isn’t the highlight of his musical career. The band was invited to play at the 2012 Olympics in London, the first time a college marching band has participated in the prestigious event. The band was in the United Kingdom eight days and rehearsed in front of Buckingham Palace on The Mall before its debut during the women’s cycling event. According to Hackmann, the band played at the park before the opening ceremony and marched around the crowd for 45 minutes. In addition to seeing world-

A traditional barbeque lunch will be served, plus kid’s corner face painting, Santa pictures, bake sale, fantastic silent auction, and more. “The Silver Anniversary bazaar gives the community a wonderful chance to start their holiday shopping with the funds going to several good causes,” Tom Short said. In addition to church and youth missions, proceeds are also divided among local charities such as the Salvation Army Women’s Shelter for Domestic Abuse, Devereux children’s school, Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children, the Daily Bread, the Boy Scouts and Meals on Wheels. Silent auction items include four one-day “park-hopper”
tickets donated by Disney World, a $480 value. More than 50 local businesses have donated their products or services as well. Entertainment includes an 11:30 a.m. concert featuring solos by Dr. Robert Lamb, professor of music at Brevard Community College and the traditional-chorus director, and duets by Lamb and Lori Taylor, both accompanied by Tom Taylor. The event is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, located at 7400 N. Wickham Rd. For more information, contact Tom and Nancy Short at tshort@cfl. rr.com, or for a list of courses, call the church office at 321242-2585. VV

community dinner. “We teach everything from marriage skills, to money management to how to grieve in a healthy way,” said Senior Co-pastor Terri Hill. The church is known across the county for its divorce recovery class, which helps participants learn how to change their approach to dating so that their next marriage is a lifelong mutual blessing. The bazaar includes several “stores” for shopping with a cause: Book Nook, Attic Treasures, Unique Boutique and Silent Auction. The biggest attraction is the arts and crafts showcase, featuring 35 of the best local artists offering a variety of one-of-a-kind craft products.
