Birding author’s dangerous tale

The new Viera Discovery Center, located at 7350 Shoppes Dr., Suite 103, is taking shape and on schedule to open this month, company officials say. The center was constructed in 2006 as Viera Realty Inc’s sales office. The building was vacated by the realty sales team in August when it moved to their new location at the Northwest corner of Murrell and Wickham, allowing the repurpose of the building into the Viera Discovery Center. The building will offer a warm greeting and become a community resource, said KarlaMae Goodman, general Photo courtesy of Cathy Heinz manager. Viera Discovery Center community ambassadors Carmen Vastola and Ana Rhodes, along with general manager Karla-Mae Goodman, are gearing up for a Feb. 25 opening. “The Viera Discovery Center is being designed to provide a welcoming atmosphere to its visitors neighborhood maps, and bankers and the residents,” and a Realtor room as a and guests, from the video presentations on two Goodman said. measure of convenience landscape to the flooring, big screens tvs. Construction of the for agents and builders every detail has be taken “From the lifestyle, interiors was completed in working with clients on into consideration,’’ December and the finishing variety of homes and purchases in Viera. Suntree Elementary School parent Philip Karman, Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy Leon Jones, right, and Principal Mecheall Giombetti, center, discuss upgrades to security at the school. By Linda Wiggins

All schools in the Viera, Suntree and south Rockledge area and beyond will get closer scrutiny and upgrades to their security systems in light of the Newtown, Conn., school killings, but Suntree Elementary School was already a step ahead.

A week before the tragedy, an apparently inebriated noncustodial parent caused a security breach at the south end of campus where a walkway connects to the Casa Bella community. “Since then, we have experimented with ways to improve security yet streamline arrival and dismissal of students,” said Mecheall Giombetti,

Suntree principal. “We really appreciate the patience of parents as we work this out, because it ultimately is for the safety of their children, which are their greatest concern.” Stops and starts with new changes resulted in traffic-loop gridlock and crowds of parents waiting to pick up their children. The popular school is at its limit of 648 students. Daily notes for parents went home in students’ backpacks. A sampling of one: “We quickly realized that Plan ‘A’ and even plan ‘B’ were a disaster! So take a deep breath and read on for the new and improved Plan ‘C’ that we hope will get a grade of A.’ ” The jump on changes at Suntree may provide insight into a district-wide security upgrade, reducing the need for stops and starts at schools across the county. Giombetti is working with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, which serves the unincorporated area of Brevard County in which Suntree and Viera are located. A sheriff’s deputy was posted during arrival times on the return to school after winter break when the changes were implemented. In turn, Sheriff Wayne Ivey is coordinating with Brevard Schools Superintendent Brian Binggeli on a plan to upgrade security at all schools. “Schools have always had a highsecurity protocol,” Ivey said. “Think about fire drills, air raid drills where you had to get under the desk and instructions not to go near the windows during severe weather. “Schools have always had great safety plans in place and the ability to move large numbers of people out safely during emergencies. Our challenge is to make them even more secure.” For more information on changes at your area Brevard public school, call 321-631-1000, ext. 500 and ask to be connected to that school. VV

Viera Manor to open this spring

Doug Love, executive director for Viera Manor, stands in front of what will be a premier assisted living facility in Viera. By Rosemary H. Lynn

Viera Manor, an assisted living facility, is well under way to opening its doors. Doug Love, executive director, anticipates an April or early-May opening, with reservations for units already coming in. There will be 86 suites on

two floors. Six of these are two-bedroom units at more than 1,000 square feet of space, each. Other rooms are studio type for one person, and one-bedroom suites. All have a private bathroom and kitchenette. Laundry services can be provided or the resident may do their own laundry.

“We try to accommodate everyone according to their personal needs,” Love said, adding that this applies especially to veterans, who receive preference in admission. “We are very close to the V.A. clinic and will have transportation for them to and from the center. There will also be on-site physical therapy as well as nursing services available,” he said. It is easy to understand why Love is excited about this project. He has been a director for various assisted living facilities for more than 14 years. He is hoping that Viera Manor will be one of the premier living facilities in Brevard County. Included in the price of a monthly unit rental are fivestar quality meals prepared by a chef and served by a professional wait staff. There will be transportation to and from for shopping, movies and doctor’s appointments. Guests may come and go as

they please and there will be ample parking for their vehicles. An indoor café and ice cream parlor, hair and nail salon and an exercise room, as well as reading room, a big screen TV room and lounge will be provided. Residents can request private dining for their family or friends in a special area off the main dining room. There will be menus offering various selections of healthy foods and desserts. “I am very excited about what we will be offering and, if a guest has a special health need, we will do everything we can to accommodate him or her,” Love said. Local entertainers will perform each week, according to Love. “The people who live at Viera Manor are our guests and we will treat them as such,” Love said. operate under the direction of The Viera Company and will be open and staffed seven days a week. It will house the Marketing & Community Relations department, and the two full-time ambassadors. “This is a community resource,’’ Goodman said. “From our community partners to our residents, to the local homeowners associations for their meetings, everyone will benefit from it. It’s a beautiful building. Many newcomers are always pleasantly surprised when they walk through the door, so utilizing this building was not a difficult decision. Our town is growing, and we see this as an opportunity to have our community grow with us. We are here to serve, introduce and educate through partnership, all with the goal of building a better community, together.’’ Goodman said. VV

On March 10, the Suntree community will host a Spring Fling dinnerdance, will benefit four organizations in Brevard County. It will be held at the Holiday Inn in Viera. This annual event is open to all Brevard county residents and promises to be great fun for all. The organizations benefiting from the proceeds are Viera High School, Serene Harbor, Nana’s House and South Brevard Animal Shelter. Each will receive a donation of $1,000. Carolyn Hayes, entertainment planner, has booked entertainer Nick Chirico for the night, which will include dinner, silent auction, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. The cost per person is $35. Chirico, promises to be a

highlight of the evening. As a well-known entertainer for nursing and assisted living facilities in the area, many people do not realize that he also is available to perform at events such as clubs and local parties. He has entertained throughout the United States for cruises, casinos, theme parks, conventions and concerts. In his 40plus years of entertaining, Chirico has opened for or played with such famous acts as Little Anthony, The Dell Vikings, The Platters, The Coasters, Soul Survivors and the Ink Spots. He also opened for Garth Brooks when Brooks was just starting out, as well as for jazz greats such as The Peterson Family. Chirico has acted in several feature length films as well as worked behind the scenes doing movie

soundtrack production. His light-hearted approach makes him a favorite entertainer at the many facilities he regularly visits. His goal is to give back to a community that has done so much for him. He is passionate about his calling and loves to make his audience, no matter its age, energetically happy. Cocktails will be served at the open cash bar from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. with dinner from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dancing will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information about the Spring Fling, visit Neighborsofsuntree. org. Cupid’s 10 tips for a happy

Valentine

February is the month Cupid draws back his bow and fires an arrow through the hearts of a couple and, voila!, true love. Some Viera and Suntree love experts say, however, magic doesn’t just happen; It takes work, but the payoffs are amazingly good for mental health and happiness. By Linda Wiggins

1. Exercise together. Exercise boosts your happy neurotransmitters, and exercising together helps you bond on a physical but non-sexual level. “It does increase feelings of intimacy,” said Dr. Scott Fairchild, Ph.D., a mental health counselor and owner of Baytree Behavioral Health in Viera. If Cupid does shoot arrows, it is more likely he aims at the brain rather than the heart. Fairchild works with a nuclear technologist to perform brain scans and a neurosurgeon who analyzes them to actually show healthier brain function post treatment. A happy relationship is one of the most important factors in improving emotional health, Fairchild said. 2. Do something thoughtful for your partner everyday. Show your spouse that you thought of him/her even with a simple “thinking of you” text or email that will bring a smile to their face. Hide a note in a lunch box or briefcase. “Acts of kindness always bring on more acts of kindness,” said Dr. Rachel Lefebvre, Ph.D., a Viera psychologist specializing in marriage and family therapy. 3. Holy Trinity fundraiser appeals to country music lovers By Carl Kotala

Country music fans, both young and forever young, should have a fun time at the fifth annual Country Legends Band Concert at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy Performing Arts Center on Feb. 9. The event, which benefits Holy Trinity’s athletic programs, has become so popular that there are two shows – at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. – with roughly 1,600 people expected to attend. Holy Trinity athletic director Lenny Paoletti put the show together in 2007 with his wife, Tammy, who is also the featured singer. “Our motto is that we pay tribute to country legends of yesterday and today,” Lenny Paoletti said. “So we’ll do Patsy Cline and Hank Williams, Sr., and Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. But we’ll also do Garth Brooks and Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert, and some of the newer ones. “The audience we’re getting is very diverse. We want them all to have a good time.” There will also be a preshow party with food and drinks beginning 90 minutes

MS Walk debuts at Church at Viera by Mary Brotherton

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system. It disrupts connections and signals between the mind and body, sometimes causing disability. Every hour, someone in the United States is diagnosed with MS. The Mid-Florida Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a community of individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of those affected with MS. The chapter, founded in 1958, provides programs and services to an estimated 70,000 people affected by MS. The group serves 23 counties and raises money to fund research into the cause of and finding a cure for the disease.

In the middle of MS Awareness Week, on March 16, the local chapter will hold Walk MS, a powerful way for the community to share in the hope for a cure. According to the group’s Facebook page, a $50 donation provides transportation to a physician or therapist appointment; $100 sponsors one hour of counseling for an MS client or family member in crisis; $225 underwrites one child’s attendance at the MS Kids Camp; $500 provides a six-week MS Journey Club workshop for one family; and $1,500 provides assistance with home or vehicle modifications to maintain independence. A donation of $10,000 funds an educational symposium to help people manage the unpredictable symptoms of MS. The

money raised stays in Central Florida. Kevin Kelley, the chairperson for the Brevard Walk, said that groups are forming now for the event at the Church at Viera. “We have about 75 individuals and teams registered for our first walk in Viera,” he said. “The local chapter has been sponsoring walks for 17 years. This is my second.” Kelley said he hopes to surpass this year’s fundraising goal of $70,000, which was the amount raised at last year’s walk. “We are excited about the walk, this year,” he said. “It’s going to be like NASCAR, with all left turns. The rectangular track is in a beautiful setting. ” For more information, or to register, visit midfloridamswalks.org or call 800-344-4867. VV

Families, seniors top priority for top cop

COMING SOON to Viera!

By Linda Wiggins

New Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, in an interview with Viera Voice, pledged to focus his efforts on families with children, and on seniors, two populations that make up the majority of residents in Viera, Suntree and south Rockledge. He was sworn in on Jan. 7. “Nothing’s ever been more humbling in my life than that day, to have all these folks celebrating with us at the swearing in ceremony,” Ivey said. “I was so fortunate to have my whole family there, including all four of my children. My wife sacrificed so much during the campaign. I can tell you I know firsthand how important families are to each and every resident of Brevard County.” Formerly head of the Florida VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins Department of Law Enforcement, Wayne Ivey, left, is sworn in as Brevard County Sheriff by outgoing Ivey used to write a column for sheriff, Jack Parker. Viera Voice sister paper Senior Life, often focusing on safety issues for seniors. With this focus in mind, he pledged to work with new State Attorney Phil Archer to build an economic crimes task force targeting fraud and cutting identity-theft crimes. While these crimes are nondiscriminatory, it is the most tragic when seniors are targeted, according to Ivey, because they don’t have the ability to work to rebuild their savings, which often are wiped out entirely. The task force will also look at ways to inform residents immediately about topics like particular neighborhoods being targeted by burglars so that area residents can beware. VV

Biking trail from the zoo to the beach, first segment planned By George White

County recreation officials will soon construct a mile-long elevated boardwalk trail from the Brevard Zoo in what is hoped will one day join a network of trails leading all the way to the beach. “It starts at the southern access road of the Zoo and essentially will go a mile south, about half way to Pineda’’ said Keith Winsten, executive director of the Brevard Zoo. The $1.8 million project also includes the development of paved parking places in the south zoo parking lot, he said. The project fits perfectly with the zoo’s mission of getting people closer to nature, he said. “We really see ourselves as offering a variety of nature experiences here. For example, we have Tree Top Trek. This is an extension of that. There are very few off-road bike trails here and this is going to go through some beautiful habitat so it really aligns up with the whole vision what could happen. Eventually, if the second phase is completed and lines up with Pineda. You could bike all the way to the beach, so it connects all the people of the Viera area with the rest of the county,’’ Winsten said. There also is a provision in the agreement for the Zoo to rent out bikes and other concessions as a potential tourist draw,’’ he said. The Brevard Zoo trail was mentioned in the 2000 parks referendum and another in 2006. The county has an agreement with the Brevard Zoo to construct the trail with the zoo responsible for operation and maintenance, said Brevard County Parks and Recreation Director Jack Masson. The project is in the final stages of design and it is anticipated that the project will go to bid for 30 days starting in February. Construction is expected to take approximately 150 days, he said. “The trail will be elevated boardwalk with selected rest areas. The trail will accommodate walkers, joggers, bicyclists, strollers, roller riders. The bids will dictate how far we will be able to go because we only have the $1.8 million. Right now, the second phase is conceptually only. There is no funding for that,’’ Masson said. The boardwalk will be constructed of recycled plastic lumber, he said. “The up-front costs are a lot more with recycled material, however, the longevity far exceeds that of wood,’’ he said. The project also includes paving from the zoo parking lot to where the boardwalk will begin, he said. VV

Brevard Zoo’s 400,000th visitor is a Viera family By Mary Brotherton

When Viera’s Santilli family visited Brevard Zoo on New Year’s Eve, mom, Jackie, hoped to make a special holiday memory for her two small children and their grandmother. The visit turned into more than a memory for the family, as the group made zoo history. Jackie Santilli was the 400,000th visitor in 2012. “We visit often,” Santilli said. “It is nice to have the zoo in the community. Our children love coming to the zoo and it was special

to be a part of surpassing 400,000 visits to this community treasure.” This was the first year the zoo surpassed 400,000 visitors since its 1994 opening. Excluding guests for Treetop Trek and Boo at the Zoo, the zoo’s 2012 attendance increased by 10 percent from 2011. The dinosaur exhibit and other special attractions helped draw 401,837 guests to the zoo in 2012. As Very Important Zoo guests, Jackie Santilli, her children Michael and Alexandra, and their grandmother, Joan, who was visiting from New York, were treated to a

free lunch, opportunities to feed the giraffe and a free train ride. Brevard Zoo is home to more than 650 animals representing more than 165 species located in Florida, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. Some of the zoo’s features include giraffe and lorikeet feedings, African kayak tours, paddle boats in the wetlands and a train ride. The nonprofit zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 321254-9453. VV

Holy Trinity baseball turns to Hall of Fame coach

Viera eyes district title … and plenty more

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

On a team short of upperclassmen, the Holy Trinity baseball team will rely heavily on players such as freshman Sean-Paul Perry, left, junior Jacob Burns, center, and freshman Ryan Bastien. By Carl Kotala

When Devon Pishalski decided to transfer to Holy Trinity for his junior year, he was excited to find out his new baseball coach would be none other than Space Coast Hall of Famer Chuck Goldfarb. “He’s brought a lot of talent, a lot of baseball smarts,” Pishalski said. “He clearly knows what he’s doing out there … it’s going to be a lot of fun playing for him.” Goldfarb, who won two state baseball championships at Merritt Island, and also helped turn Cocoa High into a powerhouse during his stint as athletic director, retired last May. Now, he’s back as Holy Trinity’s baseball coach and associate athletic director. The facilities have been upgraded, and with Goldfarb’s longtime assistant coaches Mark Hedgecock and Bubba Frith on board, the Tigers are working to improve their program as well. With only one senior, two juniors and 13 sevenththrough-10th graders, however, it’s going to take time. “We’ve got our work cut out

for us,” Goldfarb said. “The kids are working good. I’m pleased with them. We’ve just got to work harder every day. My coaching staff will push them.” Pishalski is one of those two juniors, along with Jacob Burns, a 6-foot-3 left-handed pitcher/first baseman who throws between 86 and 87 mph with a curveball, changeup, knuckleball and slider. He has drawn the interest of colleges such as UCF, Miami and Clemson. “We’re a pretty young team,” Burns said. “We’ve just got to work hard. We’re getting better. I see pretty good potential. We’ve got a lot of young guys, but we’re getting better.” Sean-Paul Perry, a freshman who will play shortstop, center field and possibly pitch, believes the Tigers will be much better if they can shore up their defense. “I think a successful year is going to be if we can limit errors,” Perry said. “Last year, we made more errors than we had the past three or four years. If we just limit the errors and improve every single year, by the time I’m a junior or senior we’re going to be a good team and we’ll be able to compete with those bigger schools.” VV

the upcoming year. But wait, there’s more. “Not only do we bring 12 back, we brought in some really good freshmen that I wasn’t expecting,” Pierce said. “There were probably two or three of them that I didn’t even know who they were when they came in. They’re going to be impact players right off the bat and probably start.” Two freshmen who figure to have an immediate effect on the Hawks this season are Kiana East, a shortstop/ pitcher, and

Sidney Brooks, whom Pierce described as the epitome of a utility player. Those two join an experienced group led by their co-captains – senior pitcher Ana Breeden and junior Lauren Palombi, who led Viera in hitting last season. “I think she’s really going to be a big asset for this team,” Pierce said of Palombi. “She really came into her own last year. And she had a great fall, too. She’s (also) a really good leader, her and Ana both.” Last year’s Viera team lost in the semifinals of the regional playoffs, after reaching the regional finals the two previous seasons. That didn’t sit well with the returning players who are determined to bond together this season. “We’re all on the same page,” Breeden said. “We all want to win districts again and go to regionals and go further than we did last year. We all have the same goal, so I think that’s what’s pushing us.” Other reasons for optimism include the return of Breeden and Sara Seibert on the mound. With the addition of East, Kate Callinan will concentrate on playing first base instead of pitching this season. And the Hawks will get a big boost once Dee Anderson joins the team after basketball season. Winning another district title would be nice, but with so much talent returning, Viera has its sights set high. “This year … states,” Palombi said. “We’re going to states.” VV

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

The Holy Trinity softball team made it to the regional playoffs last year and has a lot of young talent it will rely on this season. By Carl Kotala

With a starting lineup that will feature eight players who are sophomores – or younger – the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy softball team’s best days are definitely down the road. “We have a lot of young people coming on, so that’s good for the future,” said eighth-grader Talia Douglas. “Because they’ll grow together,” added sophomore Paige Golson. Of course, that doesn’t mean the Tigers aren’t planning on making a little noise now. Holy Trinity is coming off a season in which it was runner-up in the district and advanced to the first round of the regional tournament. Seven of those players are back, including five starters. “More so than any other

year that I have been a part of this program, these girls are taking ownership this year,” coach Ralph Golson said. “They’re out here helping each other.” Having a good mix of players who have experience despite their overall youth, and a number of other players who are hungry to learn, has been paying off for the Tigers. “I feel like whenever we’re practicing and someone makes a mistake, no one’s mad about it,” senior first baseman/ pitcher Lexi Joseph said. “We pick each other up. And there’s no drama.” Douglas is the team’s top player and, according to Coach Golson, has the potential to be a Division I player. She’ll be at shortstop. Joseph will be at first base and also handle some of the pitching. Sophomore

Alyssa Nelson will once again be the team’s top pitcher. The Tigers have also been impressed with the play of younger players like Casey Cohen (third base/catcher) and Suzanna Boyle (second base), who have shown marked improvement since last season. Senior Sophie Rosseau, who has never played softball before, has impressed with her attitude and will spend the season moving between the JV and varsity levels. Holy Trinity may be undergoing a youth movement, so to speak, but that doesn’t mean the Tigers don’t have their eyes on the present. “Right now, we’re focusing on districts and winning that,” Douglas said. “If we do good and pass that, then we’re ready for the rest.” VV

Reid Neal, left, and Grant Wilcoxon are co-captains of the Viera High baseball team, which will gun for its first district title this season. By Carl Kotala

Reid Neal is about to start his seventh season of playing high school baseball, and the Viera High senior shortstop has yet to experience the joy of winning a district championship. The Hawks’ co-captain is hoping to change all that, and he’s hardly the only one who wants to end his high school career in style. “We had eight juniors that turned into seniors this year that are all hoping for the same thing,” Neal said. Having lost only one starter from last season’s team that went 16-11 and, with the addition of some younger talent, this could be Viera’s year. “We’ve got a lot of guys that we’re expecting a lot of good things (from),” Hawks

coach Bob Doty said. “I believe we have the talent. It’s just bringing everybody together, that team chemistry that we always talk about. Our theme this year is ‘Band of Brothers.’” Neal and senior pitcher/ first baseman Dave McKay have both signed with Florida Atlantic, giving the Hawks two marquee players to rely on. However, Viera has plenty of other talent in co-captain Grant Wilcoxon (center field/pitcher) and Steven Martinez (second base), a four-year letterman. Matt Cowan, who missed all of last year with an injury, is back and should bring a big bat to the Viera lineup. Senior outfielder Kyle Post; senior pitcher Brandon Goff; junior catcher Billy Lamm; outfielder Connor Prater; third baseman

Connor Hermida and first baseman and left-handed pitcher Kyle Hintz will also be key players for Viera this season. “Our hitting will be (leaps and) bounds better than it was last year,” Neal said. “One through eight can all hit a bomb and one through nine could all hit .300. It’s doable.” The Hawks remember watching New Smyrna Beach doing a dog pile on their field after winning last year’s district title. This time, they want to be the ones doing the celebrating. “We’ve been working for it all offseason,” Wilcoxon said. “We’ve been going five days a week since September. We’ve been getting after it. For a lot of us, it’s our last chance, so we’re giving it everything we have.” VV

Tigers, Hawks get new district opponents By Carl Kotala

New district opponents will mean new challenges for both the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and Viera High football teams during the next two seasons. The Florida High School Athletic Association released its tentative district lineup for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 football seasons last month. Viera will remain in Class 7A, District 12. Also assigned to that district were Martin County, Melbourne and Sebastian River. The addition of Melbourne and Sebastian River replaces Fort Pierce Central and Port St. Lucie, not only cutting the travel time for the Hawks, but giving them a natural rivalry with Melbourne and a potential one with Sebastian River. Holy Trinity, which was in Class 3A, District 4, will now be in District 3. However, the Tigers will still face First Academy (Orlando), Melbourne Central Catholic, Orangewood Christian (Maitland) and Trinity Prep (Winter Park). There were set to be two additions – Lake Mary Prep and Florida Air Academy. However, Florida Air Academy announced last month it was dropping football. District assignments will be finalized pending any appeals. Neither Viera or Holy Trinity planned to change their assignment. “It was already a very tough district, but I like it,â€? Holy Trinity football coach Mark Ainsley said in an email. â€œâ€Ś I feel very good about what is to happen here at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. “The HT football program is looking very strong so far. We have already been in the weight room preparing. We return a good core of players and although, we graduated nine players, we look to not rebuild, but to reload. I feel very positive about the amount of feedback I am getting about our 2013 team. We have been hard at work for some time now.â€? Viera coach Kevin Mays, whose team scored its first-ever district win against Martin County this past season, is also looking forward to new challenges. “It’s got three other good teams in it and I think it’s a district we can be competitive in,â€? Mays said. “We’ve got a good group of skills coming back. The biggest loss is that we’re graduating seven seniors on the (offensive) line. We started offseason conditioning and all the way up to May 1, it will be doing everything we can do to get better. “We’re looking forward to it. The guys are trying to build off that first district win. We felt good when the season ended. And our younger kids seem hungry.â€?

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

The Viera High football team will find itself in a new district that includes Melbourne and Sebastian River next season.

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

The Holy Trinity football team will have a new district next season, but the only difference will be the addition of Lake Mary Prep.

Highwaymen paintings to be displayed at King Center

Robert Lewis, Highwaymen artist

The colorful paintings of Highwaymen artist Robert Lewis will be on display at the Harris Corporation Art Gallery of the Maxwell C. King Center lobby from Feb. 4 through Feb. 24. The exhibit can be viewed by ticketed patrons attending King Center main stage events. His exhibit will be open to the public from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb.

21. Lewis will perform during the evening. In the early 1950s through the 1980s, a group of 26 AfricanAmerican artists painted beautiful landscapes that displayed the serene, undeveloped Florida landscape of their time. Today these artists are known as the Florida Highwaymen and, because of the tranquil scenes and history involved, their original paintings are highly demanded by collectors and enthusiasts. Lewis is one of those men. He uses an imaginative color palette where colorful skies take center stage amongst lush greenery. Trees are also a prominent feature of his work. On his older paintings, the palms often curve and lean. For more information on the Florida Highwaymen, please visit floridahighwaymenartist.com. For more information, please contact Robert Lewis by email at rllewisartist.com or phone by at 321-543-1919. VV

Uncle Sam is looking for a few good women; the more the better, actually. Women In Defense, A National Security Organization (WID), an affiliate of the National Defense Industrial Association, formed its Space Coast Chapter Jan. 15. The mission is to cultivate and support the advancement and recognition of women in all aspects of national security, and provide women with a formal environment for professional growth through networking, education and career development. District 8 U.S. Congressman Bill Posey, whose office is at the Government Center in Viera, will be the keynote speaker at the next meeting, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the Courtyard By Marriott in Cocoa Beach. The local chapter named a president and members to the leadership board at the inaugural meeting. “The Florida Space Coast is a unique area with several rapidly expanding national defense industries and a very prevalent military presence,” said new WID chapter president, Karen Gregory,

The membership is comprised of a diverse demographic of women and men from a cross-section of national security professions in industry, government, military and academia, according to Gregory. The Space Coast chapter will allow easier access for members who want to participate in the monthly networking events. The five-person team that successfully led the charge on this effort, in addition to Gregory and Gillespie, includes Joanne Longo, Barry University; Mary Kinberg, Kinberg & Associates; and Elizabeth May, AhtnaSTS. The team worked with the guidance of the Central Florida Chapter president, Terri Smith, and past president, Debbie Berry. The cost to attend monthly meetings is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Food is included, with a cash bar available. Yellow shirts get yellow light on school closures, cuts

Viera Voice Linda Wiggins

A parent with students at Quest Elementary and Viera High schools, Athena Bauerle is also a classroom volunteer and teacher who hopes the Brevard School Board will find a way around all the school budget cuts. By Linda Wiggins

Supporters of four schools facing closure will find out their fate Feb. 12, when the Brevard County School Board votes on a new plan that may find new resources through cuts or cost savings to keep them open. While none of the schools are in the Viera and Suntree areas, families there would be affected. Students in the Viera and Suntree areas east of U.S.1 are bused to Sea Park

Elementary School in Satellite Beach, which is on the cutting block. If closed, students from those areas would likely spark redistricting, as the closest schools, Suntree and Quest elementary schools, are already at peak enrollment. The redistricting could ripple to elementary schools as far as Longleaf to the south, Manatee to the north, and beyond. The remaining vulnerable schools include Gardendale and South Lake elementary

schools on Merritt Island and in Titusville, respectively, and Clearlake Middle School in Cocoa. “Adequate school funding is the greatest investment we can make in our children and in our community,” said Suntree resident Athena Bauerle, formerly a teacher in the district and now a substitute teacher, education community leader, taxpayer and volunteer in the classrooms of both her children. Her son, Andrew, attends

Quest Elementary School and son, Robert, attends Viera High School. They, as well as all the students in the district, may have subjects cut that are necessary for a well-rounded education cherished by colleges. “We all know art and music enhances learning. The goal of public education is to provide equal opportunity for all,” Bauerle said. “If they are cut, only the well-to-do can provide this for their children. That’s not equitable.” In addition to cuts to the arts, music and other non-basics, students may find themselves competing for faculty attention if the proposed teacher-tostudent ratio changes, allowing a major reduction in teaching staff. Another of the proposed cuts would reduce planning time for teachers. “Our teachers are the front line of education. We need to support them,” Bauerle said. “They can’t do the job with even less because they are already using their own money and time to fill the gaps.” She was among the many parents, students, educators and other community members who wore yellow Save Our Brevard County Schools T-shirts or those representing schools targeted for closure at a Jan. 10 rally at Viera Regional Park. They then marched to a community

meeting held at the school board chamber to air concerns in a forum school board members declined to attend. The show of support may have swayed school board members, who declined to vote Jan. 22 to close the schools – which initially looked certain – and instead tabled the vote to Feb. 12 to explore alternatives. Since the Jan. 22 meeting, Brevard Schools Superintendent Brian Binggeli held an administrative meeting and will now recommend to the school board to delay closing the four schools for a year to explore alternatives. A number of Brevard County Commissioners spoke at the Jan. 22 meeting to protest the school closures in their districts. Last year, they voted 3-2 to lower the tax rate to give constituents a break on their now-overvalued property values, and prevent collection of excess taxes based on those values. School funds are included in the property tax. A half-cent sales tax to fill a school funding shortfall did not get voter approval in November. “The sales-tax increase might have passed if people knew exactly what was going to be cut,” Bauerle said. Viera wins top prize at Business Plan Challenge By Carl Kotala

place team was awarded $500 from Maverick Media. “It has boosted their confidence,” Viera teacher Sandy Spence said. “They’re actually having to experience being a leader and the real, true meaning of it. It’s showing them what it’s like to be successful. That’s a cool thing. You have to know how to handle that, too. It was very exciting for us.” There were 17 teams at the two-round event. Four finalists were selected and pitched their plan to a panel of judges under the premise of seeking investors. Seniors Shelby Jelinek and Nicole Fraumeni, took third place with their idea for waterproof headphones. The winning team consisted of juniors Dalton Wiedman, Joey Molnar, Dominick Vaske

and Sean McKeel. Their idea was called Go Fitness. “The concept was we would bring the gym to you and have a personal trainer for those who don’t have time to actually go to the gym,” Wiedman said. “We would set up a time slot.” The students spent roughly four weeks putting their projects together, learning about leadership, compromise and, of course, teamwork. Taking first place came as a surprise, and it also may have put at least one student on his future career path. “What it did most for me is that it kind of locked in my want to become a business man,” McKeel said. “I’m looking at going into international business, and winning this competition inspired me a little bit more to do so.” VV

Viera Voice Student of the Month Paola Irizarry of Manatee Elementary School, center, with teacher Shirley Bunker, right, and Principal Carl Brown, said helping others helped her settle into a challenging school year. By Linda Wiggins

After a bumpy transition to her new school last year, Manatee Elementary School sixth grader Paola Irizarry began to hit her stride this year, feeling plugged in, back to being the happy, high achieving student she had been before the move. All the while, she was reaching out to other students to help them with transitions of their own. Her hard work and giving spirit earned Paolo the honor as Viera Voice Student of the Month. “Paola has an extraordinary ability to make herself available to teachers and fellow students, helping in any way she can without sacrificing her own academic responsibilities,” said her teacher, Shirley Bunker. “She continues to push herself in pursuit of the

highest standards. She never makes excuses, but consistently does whatever is necessary to reach her full potential.” Recently, Paola’s class gained a new student from Peru. The new classmate speaks no English and was overwhelmed. Fortunately, Paola is bilingual and made herself immediately and consistently available to help her new friend make a smooth adjustment to her challenging environment. Additionally, Paola volunteered to provide a copy of written notes for a classmate with a learning disability. “She does this beautifully and without drawing attention to her contribution or to her classmate’s special needs,” said Manatee Principal Carl Brown. “Quiet service is her natural demeanor.”

Paola’s classmates and superiors noted that she demonstrates a strength of character under all circumstances. “She can be counted on to do the right thing, serving as a role-model without putting herself above others.” “She has a genuine sense of humility rare in someone with so many fine qualities,” were some of the comments, including, “We really hope she gets the award because she is so unassuming that she could easily be overlooked.” In fact, all of the students in Paola’s class, sang her praises except for one: Paola. “I am really happy that I won. It feels good to get acknowledgement for all that people think I have done,” Paula said. “But to me, I don’t think I do anything that anyone else wouldn’t do for me.” VV

year’s “Eat My Crust” 5K run in Viera and now he wants to do even more for Brevard County. Austin hopes to find corporations which can direct lower-income families that might need a hand with pest control problems in their homes, but can’t afford the larger companies. “I love kids,” he said, grinning like a kid himself. “I hate the idea of children sleeping in a home that might be infested with bugs or rats. That problem needs to get taken care of and, depending on the situation, I may be able to offer my services for free just until the family is in a bug-free environment again.” Austin insists there is a big difference between working on his own and working for a large company. “People appreciate that I do a really good job for them. They become my friends. Their children call me the ‘Bug man’. I love it.” Austin is pleased to say that 75 percent of his business comes from referrals. That is why he is such a big advocate of giving back to the community. His prices are affordable, and he plans on keeping it that way. “No one should live in a bug or rodent infested home.” To reach D.R.T. Michael Gainey with some of the eclectic merchandise he offers for sale in his boutique. By Rosemary H. Lynn

When you first meet Michael Gainey, you may be overwhelmed by his enthusiastic passion for design as well as all things Florida. Gainey is a third generation Floridian, who has had an interest in décor since he was a boy. When he was a teenager, he worked in an upholstery shop and instantly became a “Design Nerd”. He then earned his degree in photography before starting work in a furniture store. Later, Gainey decided to open his own business and has been in his current location for the past two years. Gainey’s storefront is upstairs in the Belair Courtyard on Brevard Avenue in Cocoa Village. Although his sign clearly reads Michael Gainey Signature Designs, his small shop offers some of

the most interesting items available today at a fraction of the price you would pay elsewhere These include vintage hats, bags, brooches, bracelets, necklaces, lamps and mirrors. Items that Gainey found while shopping here in the United States as well as abroad, are displayed and he encourages you to pick them up and imagine yourself owning it. The knick-knacks in his boutique are small treasures. It is a fun place to just look around as Gainey offers a cup of coffee as you browse. Of course, Gainey is also well known as a designer of home interiors, large and small. He has an eye for even the smallest detail in a room and can often make a room seem large with just a small change. He even offers a “Fluff and Puff” service, which simply means he will come to your home to take a look at what you have and make suggestions of what

pieces to change or add. “Small changes can make a big difference” Gainey said. “I will take a look at what a client has available and sometimes pull out an unused piece of furniture or an art piece and create a whole new look for a room.” Gainey delights in talking with his customers, learning about their preferences. Most of his clients come to him via word of mouth. They can make an appointment with him and present their own ideas, tear sheets or photos of what they have in mind, and Gainey can go from there. He has sources from which to purchase individual pieces for a room or for a complete home makeover. Gainey’s eclectic boutique is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and he can be reached at michaelgainey61@gmail. com or at 321-501-7203. His website is michaelgainey signaturedesigns.com. VV

Second annual Art with a Heart auction to benefit Devereux Organization By Rosemary H. Lynn

The second annual Art with a Heart auction will be held Friday, Feb. 8 at the Holiday Inn, 8298 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne. Art in all media and price ranges will be available for sale. The art previews will begin at 6 p.m. and the auction will start at 7 p.m. Admission is $15 per person or $25 for two. This includes light hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, coffee or tea and a door prize drawing. One complimentary drink coupon is also included. Proceeds will benefit Devereux Foundation. The organization is planning on a major expansion, which will allow more children to benefit from the hospital’s facilities. In Brevard there are 1,000 children enrolled in the Devereux system and 350 staff members. The children attend regular educational classes given by fully accredited teachers and schools. Children spend from three months to several years receiving individualized attention at

Devereux. They come from all walks of life and from all over the U.S. and even out of the country. There are three group homes in the area that Devereux sponsors. Devereux opened its doors locally in 1988. It was founded by Helen Devereux 100 years ago as a national organization serving 13 states. Florida now is the second-largest treatment center with board certified child psychologists and mental health professionals. The art auction is just one of the many fundraisers Devereux sponsors each year. In the coming months, there will be a motherdaughter tea, a garden party held at Florida Institite of Technology’s botanical gardens and other events. Art auctioned will include some from famous artists such as Chagall, Rockwell, Moses, Wyeth and many others. Art created by the children of Devereux will also be auctioned. “There are with some truly amazing pieces available, said Patricia Hurst, assistant director of development

When Robert Lebron recently moved from California to Florida, he wasn’t sure where he would land. But soon, he found a new home in a Viera subdivision that served his needs perfectly: lots of wall space for displaying his many paintings, room to store many more and a contemporary layout which he was sure would please his wife of 35 years, Sandi. Initially, Lebron moved to Florida alone. He and his wife had been separated for a short while but both soon realized that they wanted to be together. Soon after his move to Florida, he reached out to her to join him and it wasn’t long before she decided to make the trip. She brought the remainder of their belongings, which included many more paintings and sketches. It is a match some might call “made in heaven. They complement each other perfectly. Sandi is a painter in her own right. She and Robert met in 1978 at an art gallery in Santa Barbara, Calif. Soon after, they were married. Both favor oil painting, Robert using the palette knife to create most of his artwork and Sandi using brushes. Both use vivid colors in their work and intricate detail. When Lebron was very young, his mother took him and his brother to Puerto Rico to live. His father, who was Puerto Rican, did not

come with them. Lebron was fascinated with the colorful tales his cousin told about life on the sea. He began to sketch drawings based on these tales. After returning to the mainland, Lebron was admitted to the New York High School of Music and Art. He also studied at The Arts Student League of New York. He soon began drawing cartoons for a local newspaper, which led him to begin working as an artist for Walt Disney. It was during a prolonged stay in Spain that Lebron picked up the palette knife. He found it to be a natural implement to paint with oils. He still uses one today. Each of Lebron’s paintings is dramatic and full of life. His vast collection of city scenes include San Francisco, London, New York, New Orleans, Paris and Vienna. Perhaps his most famous works are the paintings depicting the tragic forays of the Donner party, which are on display at the Emigrant Museum in Trucklee, Calif. Lebron has penned his first fiction novel, “DaVinci – Picasso DIALOGUE: Two Art Geniuses Clash in The Heavens which he also illustrated. His wit and wisdom fills the pages, as do his eclectic drawings. Currently, Lebron’s work can be viewed at the Art Gallery of Viera at The Avenue Viera. He also teaches classes there on Fridays. Holy Trinity Apprentice: You’re not fired!

Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy students have fun with the school’s version of The Apprentice, which teaches entrepreneurial skills while benefiting the community. Cover photo: Teachers Lara Duguid and Paul Suchoski. By George White

Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy Upper School teachers Paul Suchoski and Lara Duguid use lessons based on the popular show “The

Apprentice” to raise money for charity. The biggest difference between the show and the school program for the senior class? No Donald Trump with his catch phrase “You’re fired!” Suchoski teaches a class in the principals of entrepreneurship.

“It’s really trying to teach the kids the basics of starting and building their own business. It’s a lot of what you get in business school that really aims more at the individual business owner,’’ he said. Duguid, who teaches

economics among other classes, came up with the idea to use “The Apprentice.” “I knew the premise of it but never watched the show. I read the project idea and then tweaked it to use it here at the school. I just did it for the sixth time this last semester,’’ she said. Classes are divided where each group of five is given a $100 budget, which has to be reimbursed by proceeds, and then must give a proposal for a business plan involving a one-day breakfast sale on campus, she said. The sell-a-thon, usually held on the last Friday before the end of each semester, is held in various locations around campus. “I have them sell breakfast items, but they can add things to bring in customers. And, over the years we have had a variety of different things, such as pictures with Santa. Last year we had a horse,’’ she said. The judges for the competition, comprised

of teachers and administrators, rank the booths on factors including appearance, marketing and neatness. “I base the winner on the money they make after they reimburse it out of the money they make. I have always had the $100 covered and sometimes they’ve raised hundreds,’’ she said. Salesmanship often comes through, with a winning combination, Suchoski said. “It really is a competition because some of them have music and decorations. There’s a lot of salesmanship going on because sales at one booth takes sales away from the others,’’ he said. The teams can only have one booth, but can make sales in both places, Duguid said. “This is a real world thing. The more outgoing they are, the more they are going to sell,’’ she said. Proceeds from the program—about $250 last year—go to local charities. VV

Living in Suntree

This column will be more parochial than usual. I have the privilege of serving as general manager of Suntree Master Homeowners Association, Inc. Recently, I learned that many Suntree and area residents are not aware of the varied demographics and amenities. This column will tell you about them. Suntree is the largest Planned Unit Development (PUD) on the Space Coast, consisting of 4,506 dwellings. In addition, there are 29 commercial properties paying annual fees. The population is estimated at more than 11,000. While Suntree is home to many seniors, we also include numerous families. Elementary schoolage children residing south of Wickham attend Suntree ct2_Layout 1 1/29/13 9:42 AM Page 1 Elementary School and those north of Wickham are Suntree and Quest elementary school students. There are 66 miles of roads in Suntree, most of which are maintained by Brevard County. We also have 11 miles of pedways, some of which are shared with Suntree Country

Association Living By Frank Kneiser CMCA, AMS, PCAM

It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an attorney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a requirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any questions at frank@suntreeflorida.com. Club. St. Johns River Waterway Management District requires that Suntree maintain 350 acres of wetlands, retention ponds and stormwater drainage canals. These consist of five major drainage basins

controlled by nine functioning weirs or dams. Nine board members who are elected for two-year terms govern Suntree. Our next election will be March 13 at Suntree Country Club. The volume of the election is so large that the Brevard Election Commission provides voting machines and tabulations. Each board member either chairs or is involved in at least one standing committee. There are 13 employees of the association. We have two large parks with shaded playground equipment. The Spyglass Hill Park pavilion is available for resident reservations at no charge. Nine “pocket parks” are scattered throughout the community, with picnic benches in serene atmospheres. Suntree provides a diverse assortment of community events. These have included symphonies and movies in the park and an annual Easter egg hunt. This is just a “thumbnail sketch” of Suntree. Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus)

Charlie Corbeil

Florida Master Naturalist pbase.com/charlie_corbeil By Charlotte and Charlie Corbeil

In the United States, the red-bellied woodpecker inhabits the woodlands, forests and wooded suburbs of the East, except northern New England. Locally, it is commonly seen at the Viera Wetlands. Volunteer dentists to Give Kids a Smile

Volunteer dentists will Give Kids a Smile during a free program to treat children who are low-income and without dental insurance or Medicaid. The Brevard County Dental Society will schedule appointments Feb. 4 through 7. “We are happy to do it, and it is something that gives us all a lot of joy,” said Suntree dentist Michael Fowler, D.M.D. Like Fowler, many area dentists travel to disadvantaged countries to provide free services to children and adults in small villages. “We are careful not to overlook the children in our own backyard, who need our help just as much,” Fowler said. NEW YEAR – NEW LOOK!

He perches on a dead palm and issues a series of calls and drums on the trunk. Swiftly, she comes into view, performing her characteristic undulating flight with rapid wing beats. She joins him in the drumming, which indicates her willingness to assist in the nest building. He hops toward the peak; she climbs on the opposite side. Their ascent is facilitated by their zygodactyl feet, which display two toes forward and two toes back. The rear toes help increase support for clinging to vertical surfaces. Additionally, their unique tails, stiff and curved, brace their upward climb. When they reach the summit, they exhibit raised crests with ruffled necks and undersides. The tinge of red on their bellies is more noticeable, especially in the male nuptial displays. They mate and soon hollow a cavity. Presumably, they reproduce chicks! VV

Birding adventurist to headline wildlife festival By linda wiggins

Publishing giant Simon & Schuster has announced that award-winning author, expert birder and wildlife magazine publisher Tim Gallagher will headline the Viera Wetlands Nature Festival April 12 through 14, 2013. He is editor-in-chief of “Living Bird,” the flagship publication of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He will be the keynote speaker at the festival opening dinner, to be held at Holiday Inn Viera. It will be the first time the festival will be held over three days, and birders from all over the world are expected to attend.

At the festival, Gallagher will kick off the April 13 release of his new book, “Imperial Dreams: Tracking the Imperial Woodpecker through the Wild Sierra Madre.” In order to research and track the elusive bird, he traveled deep into dangerous Mexican territory ruled by cartel drug lords. He will tell of encounters with AK-47 machine gun-wielding drug traffickers, fields of opium poppies and marijuana, burning houses, and fleeing villagers. For more information on festival’s kick-off dinner keynote presentation or the festival, go to friendsofviera.org. VV
