In medieval times freelancers were soldiers who were for sale. They were literally free (available) lances.

From The Horse’s Mouth

You can tell the age of a horse by examining its teeth. A horse salesman may try to fabricate the age of the animal,but you can always establish the truth ‘from the horse’s mouth’.

Long In The Tooth

This saying also has horsey origins, as the gums of a horse recede as it gets older, making it appear long toothed.

A Long Shot

It’s a long shot means an effort with little chance of success. In the past, when guns were only accurate at short range, a long shot fired over a great distance had a small chance of hitting its target.
