November a month that stops a nation
More security for older folk A UN expert has called for greater accessibility by older people to urban infrastructure, facilities and services. The United Nations independent expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, Rosa Kornfeld-Matte, said nations needed to re-think cities. More than 900 million older persons would be living in cities across the
WELCOME to our entertaining November edition of your popular Seniors Newspaper. This month is a particularly special time for many Seniors Newspaper readers throughout our five publication regions as they celebrate a social and sporting icon and then commemorate events that shook the world to its core. The nation will stop on the eleventh hour, of the ele-
world by 2050, but the cities were not fit for this global demographic revolution, she said. “The existing barriers in public spaces and buildings, as well as the lack of safe, affordable, accessible and barrier-free housing and transportation, obstructed older persons from enjoying their rights and from living in dignity and safety.”
venth day, of the eleventh month to pay a silent tribute to those who paid the supreme sacrifice in wars, fighting for the freedoms we all enjoy today. This year, November 11 – Remembrance Day – will mark the 97th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute’s silence in memory of those who died or suffered
in all wars and armed conflicts. And on a celebratory note, the first Tuesday in November marks Melbourne Cup day ... when the nation stops again to become horse-racing experts for a day and take that once-ayear punt on our favourite horses. Some will go to the track and dress to sparkle; sharing champagne, wine and gourmet foods with the gla-

For now ... settle back with a cuppa and enjoy this issue’s articles about you – our Seniors Newspaper readers.
HOW did you get into building model boats? “Well, it might seem funny,” responded the former RAAF serviceman. “I was hunting for manure for our flower garden along the edges of Tygum Lagoon and I noticed ducks were dodging a flotilla of miniature marine craft zigzagging across the water.” That was about 17 years ago, and Ray Atkins, 86, says he’s been moored to the hobby ever since he joined the Logan City Marine Modellers Club, based at Waterford, south of Brisbane. As you would expect, Ray knows a lot about aircraft and has built many model military aeroplanes and trains. But intricate work needed for creating model ships and boats got his juices flowing. He said after he lost his wife four years ago, he seemed to just go around in circles.
No pier pressure, just hobby fun HELLO SAILOR:
■ When: Sundays 7am–2pm, free entry. ■ Where: Tygum Lagoon, Tygum Park, Park Rd, Waterford West. ■ Contact: Club secretary Lisa Baronoff on 0407 164 491.
“I joined the Logan modellers and the guys there were great. It put me on the right course,” Ray said. A retired panelbeater and spraypainter, Ray’s old trade has helped with his hobby. He’s working on a 1.8m oil tanker and was fitting out the cabins when Seniors Newspaper called. “We use mostly 2mm flexible plywood to make the boats,” he said. I told Ray I was connected to the plywood industry and might be able to help. Ray saw service in an RAAF bomber and tran-
sport squadron based with Commonwealth forces in Malaya during the Malayan Emergency conflict (1948-60), a guerrilla war fought between British Commonwealth armed forces and the communist Malayan National Liberation Army. And now, every Sunday from 7am–2pm, the Tygum Lagoon at Waterford West reverberates with the sounds of battery-powered craft. Hand made by committed enthusiasts and operated by radio control, all forms of watercraft from sailing boats to warships (complete with miniature sailors to operate the guns, watch for the enemy and wash the decks) are brought out for viewing pleasure. Marine craft include a Chinese junk, several sailing boats and speedboats, tugs, model warships and racingstyle catamarans known as fast electrics.
THE Melbourne Cup – Australia’s pre-eminent horse race held on the first Tuesday of November each year – is known as the race that stops a nation. And it certainly does. The winner of the first Melbourne Cup race – run in 1861– was 16.3 hand bay stallion Archer in a time of 3.52.00, ridden by John Cutts. And since then Australia has embraced Melbourne Cup Day as one of the country’s most popular racing and social days – we dress up, drink champagne, and have that once-a-year flutter on our sentimental favourites. The race is televised live to an audience of about 650 million people worldwide. More than 100,000 people will descend on Flemington racecourse for the big race day and many people will stop what they are doing shortly before 3pm on the day to watch or listen to the main race either via television, internet or the radio. At the racetrack, people dress up – many women dress to kill on the day with some participating in fashion parades on the field. Marquees are set up for VIP guests, including national and international celebrities. The race is run over 3200m under handicap conditions and is worth more than $6m in prize money. Last year’s Cup was won by Protectionist from Red Cadeaux with Who Shot Thebarman third. The four-day Melbourne Cup carnival is the pinnacle of the Melbourne spring racing carnival. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

These loominaries weave their skills By JIM BOWDEN
ABOUT 40 years ago a young British migrant weaver packed her Harris loom and boarded a ship for Australia. Although Harris weaving looms from Kent in England have been the choice of weavers and textile designers since 1939, silk tapestries woven on looms in ancient Egypt have survived since 1500 BC. When the loom lady from England eventually settled into a retirement home, the wooden machine, stored

under a house and still in good condition, was passed down to members of Southside Spinners and Weavers Group who installed it in the Logan Village museum and demonstrate their weaving skills at special open days. Iris Gerussi, 75, was work-
ing the loom with two friends when Seniors Newspaper caught up with members of the group at a Logan festival. The group was established 20 years ago and is among many similar groups offering classes and demonstrations up and down the
coast, with the Queensland Spinners, Weavers and Fibre Artists Group located at Fibre House in Auchenflower. London-born Iris Gerussi came to Queensland 34 years ago and the still-nimble fingers she uses for weaving were her “tools of trade” when she worked as
a court reporter in Hong Kong, excelling in the shorthand method developed by Sir Isaac Pitman in 1837 – now long replaced by tape recorders. The Harris weaving loom at the Logan Village museum is pedal-powered and a delight to watch in action. The first Harris loom, pro-
duced in 1939, featured a hardwood frame and brass ratchets and an easy-action shedding mechanism still used today. In 1980, the option of electronic pattern control was added and the loom was linked to a computer, liberating the textiles designer from many repetitive tasks.

Call for helpers in new study on what makes brains tick
Dr Lars Marstaller is studying aging and memory loss.
AS we age, our bodies and brains change. Some get forgetful and have trouble remembering names and dates; others are highly active and show no signs of slowing down mentally. Postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Advanced Imaging at the University of Queensland, Dr Lars Marstaller, has focused his research on how the individual differences in brain aging affect mental abilities such as language, gesture, memory and learning. “The overall aim is to understand why older adults differ so much with respect
THE World Health Organisation has issued a note of caution to the world’s red meat lovers. Eat too much, every day, and you add up your points that tilt you into the cancerrisk category. Bacon, ham and sausages ranked alongside cigarettes as a major cause of cancer, the WHO said, placing cured and processed meats in a category shared by alcohol, arsenic and tobacco. The report from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said there was enough evidence to rank processed meats as group one carcinogens because of a causal link with bowel cancer. It placed red meat in group 2A, as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. Eating red meat also was linked to pancreatic and prostate cancer, the agency said. The message garnered headlines and quick responses from the pro-meat lobby. But simply put, if you eat red meat twice a week and share your diet with fish, chicken and occasionally a vegetarian plate (and bacon for brekkie sometimes) you will be fine.
Reading and doing crossword puzzles are great exercises for the brain.

aging brain copes with these changes to support language and memory. “It’s like a train system,” Dr Marstaller says. “With age, train tracks and engines deteriorate, some faster than others, and cannot take as many passengers as before. The fascinating fact about the human brain is that it can deal with these changes and still manage to re-organise itself so that trains still run more or less on time and people can reach destinations. “My research is highly dependent on the help of the community because for each study I need older
adults aged 65 or more to take part in one of my studies.” Volunteers who decide to participate are asked to fill out a questionnaire to ensure that it is safe for them to go into the MRI scanner and that they have no mental illnesses or brain damage. Participants usually take part in a one-hour imaging session, in which they press buttons or speak words while lying in the brain scanner. “Participation in one of my studies is a contribution to science and we’ll even reimburse you for your efforts,” Dr Marstaller said.

Dipping into super to give the kids a hand
If you want to be happy in your retirement years, the advice from Forbes Business Magazine is: don’t retire.
When age is all in your mind SOME ACHIEVERS WHO MADE IT LATER IN LIFE:
■ Colonel Sanders was well over 60 when he made it big with Kentucky Fried Chicken; ■ Frank McCourt, author of Angela’s Ashes, didn’t take up writing until he was 65; ■ Grandma Moses, renowned American folk artist, began painting in her 70s. ■ Sheldon Harnick, Fiddler on the Roof lyricist and Broadway legend, is still working on new shows at 91.

On the other hand, some of the happiest people who’ve reached retirement first treated it like a vacation and then, after some rejuvenating R&R, emerged with a renewed sense of purpose and focus, eschewing who they once were and ready to embrace the possibility of who they might become. most successful among them realise that age is nothing more than a number. ■ An ability to find joy in working. The 65-and-older population is growing faster than the total population and even people in their 80s are increasingly returning to some type of work, whether part-time, paid or volunteer. In many ways, this growing sector is divorcing from traditional views of retirement and relying on their natural abil-
ity to create, which may have been long dormant. ■ The knowledge that change is good. In one way or another, people who are most happy in retirement continue to learn new things and consider new ideas. They are not afraid of change. Some go back to school, while others continue to learn through workshops, retreats and, most of all, reading. They eat well, sleep soundly and play. ■ Happily retired people treat themselves like a good friend. They keep themselves well-fed, exercise at least three times a week, get proper rest and maintain strong social connections. They understand how vital good health is to their wellbeing in retirement.

IF YOU want to be happy in your retirement years, the advice from Forbes Business Magazine is: don’t retire – at least not in the traditional sense. The magazine’s lifestyle writers say that among the men and women they know who have reached that elusive finish line, those who spent extensive periods of time puttering around on the links or vacationing at sea appeared to be aging faster than those who were still actively employed or engaged in some kind of meaningful activity. They attribute this phenomenon to the mind; perhaps when the mind tells the body that it’s retired, things begin to atrophy at
THE surge in house prices is forcing around 15% of retirees – one in seven – to dip into their own superannuation funds to help their children buy their first home, according to a survey by superannuation fund REST Industry Super. The survey of 1000 working Australians aged 50 and over found that nearly three-quarters of them planned to help out their adult children financially, by drawing down from their superannuation balances when they began retirement. Of these, more than a fifth (21%) said they would draw down on their super to help their children pay a deposit on their first home. An even higher proportion – nearly a third of retirees – said any inheritance they received would be passed on to their children to help them get on to the property ladder, given the recent surges in house values. Over the past 10 years, national property prices have risen 57%. The result has been that more first-home buyers have been forced on to the sidelines.

Coffee, tipple can impact our sleep OLDER Australians are drinking so much coffee and alcohol that it’s damaging their already-fragile sleep, a new survey has found. An examination of sleep patterns and habits by the Sleep Health Foundation has revealed consumption of caffeine and alcohol increased steadily with age. As a result, people aged over 55 were waking an average of 2.5 times each night in disruptions that affected sleep quality. The findings were concerning, given older people naturally had a more disturbed sleep, a known developmental change linked to aging, said Professor David Hillman, president of the Sleep Health Foundation, Australia’s leading national advocate for sleep health. “It seems that older people are not doing themselves any favours drinking lots of alcohol and coffee – mood-

altering substances which have been proven to be detrimental to a good night’s sleep,” Prof Hillman said. “As they age, people should really be consuming less of these, not more.” Prof Hillman issued the warning after the daylight saving change on October 4, which saw people putting their clocks forward one hour. The clock change robbed people of an hour’s sleep that night but studies show the impact of this seeming-

ly small one-hour shift in the sleep cycle affected some sleep for a week. An online survey of 1050 people, including 730 women, found that Australians were getting seven hours and 18 minutes’ sleep a night on average. Those aged over 55 got slightly less, six hours and 50 minutes a night, and admitted to waking 2.5 times a night on average, mostly to go to the toilet, or due to a busy mind, body aches or partner disturbance. About 90% drank coffee, 52% drank alcohol and 15% had taken sleeping tablets, all figures that were lower among young and middle-aged people. They also reported consuming larger quantities of caffeine than other age groups. “Our advice is if you’re struggling with your sleep, and you’ve got a bit of coffee and alcohol in your diet, experiment with having less,” Prof Hillman said.

Don’t stress over holiday season costs
Share plans with loved ones THE festive season nears and holidays are often ushered in with high expectations. From travel to hosting family, elaborate decorations and dinners to thoughtful gifts, the end of the year can also come with large debts – especially for recent retirees making the transition between a steady income and living off pensions/savings. Yes, the first few holiday seasons can come as an economic shock. While retirement is often touted as a time of rest and relaxation, granted to those who have worked hard and deserve to spend the latter portion of their life carefree, that is not always the reality. Budgets need to be readjusted and expectations may need to change substantially. However, it is possible to still have a fulfilling, meaningful holiday season even with drastic changes in income situations. It may not be easy at first; stresses may rise and disappointments may loom on the horizon.
But in most cases, these disappointments can be sidestepped through proper planning and budgeting. First of all, it is necessary to outline what expectations are being held by those you regularly involve in holiday activities. What may seem paltry to you may be the thing that makes or breaks a family member’s holiday experience. Once everyone has discussed and made clear what they would like to happen as the year comes to an end, a plan can be drafted based around these key elements. By sharing family members’ expectations, you can start to collaborate and make a plan for the holiday season. Keep the lines of communication open and let everyone voice their hopes and concerns. Validate the opinion of each person in the family by letting them share and help in a holiday plan. Once you have a detailed document spelling out what you want to accomplish over the holidays, you can begin attaching costs

to-do list based on those amounts; or, you can begin examining each item’s cost and sum up the total expenses, finally checking them against your larger budget. Early retirement can be a time of high stress, but through communication
and support, those stresses can be relieved. Take the time to talk with your loved ones about how your retirement will inevitably influence others. Share and remember to listen. Finances do not need to negatively impact on your holiday cheer.
If you are struggling with post-retirement stress and personal finance concerns, reach out to a professional adviser, a trusted friend or partner or financial consultant. Don’t be consumed by monetary stresses. You have the capability to control your life.

That’s $6.6 trillion in financial giving and $1.4 trillion in volunteer services (calculated at $23.63 per hour). Logan gets tips from the guru
At NEVILLE BLACK PHARMACY SUNNYbANK
DOZENS of Logan seniors took advantage of a rare opportunity to hear bestselling author Noel Whittaker talk financing options at a planning forum held at Active Lifestyle Estates Bethania recently. Mr Whittaker was joined by prominent retirement finance expert Rachel Lane, and together they discussed options for seniors living in south-east Queensland, where house prices are gradually rising. “According to the REIQ, the Brisbane median house price reached $610,000 in the June quarter, creating even greater competition for affordable housing in areas like Logan, particularly among young families and seniors,” Mr Whittaker said. The number of Logan residents aged 65 years and over has been forecast to more than triple to 84,600

The Active Lifestyle Estates model is unique ... buyers purchase a new, state-of-the-art home and lease the land people (2011-2036). “For seniors looking to tap into their most valuable asset – their home – to help fund their retirement while staying local, the different options can be difficult to navigate. “While downsizing to an apartment might not suit everyone, and purchasing a smaller home would attract substantial stamp duty costs, many people are looking for new options to
deliver the biggest bang for their hard-earned buck. “One such option is lifestyle parks, or manufactured housing estates. However, many people don’t know much about how that option differs from traditional retirement villages, the concessional benefits involved and the quality of homes being offered by providers like Active Lifestyle Estates across the region.” The Active Lifestyle Estates model is unique in that buyers purchase a new, state-of-the-art manufactured home and lease, rather than own the land, eliminating the need to pay stamp duty, entry and exit fees and council rates. Planning for income flow for retirees
RATHER than being offered their superannuation as a lump sum on retirement, Australians will have their balance invested in an account-based private pension designed to provide them a steady income stream. That is the intention behind the Federal Government’s commitment to develop and consult on legislation by the end of 2016 that would “facilitate trustees of superannuation funds providing pre-selected comprehensive income products for retirement”. Treasurer Scott Morrison made the announcement as part of the government’s formal response to last year’s Financial System Inquiry, which endorsed 42 out of the inquiry’s 44 recommendations. Inquiry chairman David Murray said he was pleased the government had acted

Program checks on seniors SHELBY police in North Carolina are renewing their efforts to enrol more senior residents into their “Are You OK?” program. It’s an automated system that calls senior residents who live alone or have disabilities between the hours of 7-9am. Warner Cable News reports if the calls go unanswered or if they get busy signals three times in a row, the police department will contact a family member or neighbour. If those designated contacts don’t know why the person isn’t picking up, police can check on them. “This is one that is near and dear to our hearts, because it does reach people and help people that may not have finances to get other programs or pay for programs,” said Shelby PD supervisor Amy Fredell.

Older folks learning to code
MANY young people – and those well into their eighties – are learning to code. Coding is what drives computer applications from websites to games, from refrigerators to jet fighters. And demand for coders continues to grow as more and more day-to-day activities rely on algorithms to function. The coding community numbers hundreds of millions yet you would be lucky to find more than a token number of schools in Australia that teach it or perhaps even know about it. I plan to change that in my voluntary capacity ... and I
invite seniors to join in. If you have an interest and believe you can participate, I would like to hear from you. I show kids how to code using a fantastic free online application such as Scratch. Today there are millions of Scratch users around the world ranging in age from six to 86 (and probably older). Scratch is a great first step on the coding journey but it also trains the brain in ways purpose-built applications only dream about. You can start playing with Scratch by simply going to the website at http:// scratch.mit.edu and selecting create. By logging in,
you can immediately join the Scratch community. There is a growing demand for facilitators as well, so if you would like to lend your expertise then please get in touch and I will organise classes to give you the necessary skills or lead you to a group in your area doing something similar. Please feel free to visit my website http://codingaustralia.com where there are links and lots of free resources. And please send me an email via the icon in the footer if you would like to know more.

AMA welcomes age care’s return to health portfolio THE Australian Medical Association welcomes the Federal Government’s decision to return responsibility for aged care to the health portfolio. Aged care has been missing the public and political focus it deserves in recent times. It is vital that the health needs of older Australians are considered as a key component of the broader health policy debate, and it is fitting that aged care is back with the Health Minister. Caring for older Australians, whether they live in residential aged care or independently in their own homes, is an integral part of medical practice. Most older Australians have longstanding relationships with their GP, who is best placed to determine which services will work best for their patient. Early medical assessment is critical in ensuring that older Australians receive the appropriate support to maintain their level of independence before their so-

cial and health situation deteriorates. Including the clinical opinion of a patient’s usual treating doctor in the assessment of their care needs, and formulating the care package, should be normal practice. It is currently an optional extra. We also need to see improved processes to allow doctors to manage the provision of straightforward care, such as wound care,
for older people still living in their own homes. The aged care sector must be able to provide the level and quality of medical, nursing, and allied health services required to meet the needs of our aging population. The AMA looks forward to engaging with Health Minister Sussan Ley on aged care policy priorities. – AMA president, Professor Brian Owler.

Saying thanks to grandparents OLDER people are the cornerstones of our communities – they give back as volunteers, employees, community leaders, carers, grandparents and advocates. They enrich our communities with their wide range of experience and achievements and play a significant role in the family structure. As the only child of aging parents, I understand that while there are challenges for some older people, their contribution to the state makes them Queensland’s
most valuable assets. Grandparent’s Day is an opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contribution of grandparents. It is also an occasion to acknowledge the efforts and devotion of grandparents who are fulltime carers for their grandchildren. Clarifying the age pension THE rate at which your Age Pension is paid depends on a number of factors: whether you qualify for a full or part age pension, your level of income and assets and whether you earn money which can be considered exempt under the Work Bonus Scheme. Your age pension payment is calculated against both the asset and income tests and you are paid the lower rate of the two. The rate of a full age pen-
sion, including pension supplement and the energy supplement, is $867 a fortnight for singles and $653.50 for each eligible member of a couple. This is valid until indexation on March 20, 2016. I’m puzzled when trying to downsize I AM frustrated with property developers building large houses and not considering people who want or need to downsize. I have a three-bedroom house and want to downsize to a oneor two-bedroom home with a little garden for a decent price; not for the same cost as my current home. The over 50s developments have either three bedroom or two with study or one bedroom and no garden to look after. One of these developments had one-bedroom homes with garden but the washing machine was in the lounge room; I assume in a cupboard, but that wouldn’t stop the noise of the machine. I have heard of small houses overseas and other states but not in Queensland. Secondly, I am disappointed that no discount is given to those on a senior’s card, for water or rates. My power company, public transport, motor vehicle registration etc. give discounts so why can’t the council and water supplier?

Walking, riding for good health THE Redcliffe City Mixed Probus Club lives and succeeds by its motto Friendship, Fellowship & Fun. With full membership of 120 and a waiting list, it is possible for a member to have club social contact with other members seven times in the month. It is said for an enjoyable retirement you need to find activities you enjoy and people you enjoy doing them with – so that you have an active life. It is also said that a measurement of whether people are successful in retirement living is the strength of their social network. The club’s management committee recognised that
whatever your age, keeping yourself mentally, socially and physically active can contribute to your health and well-being. Many physical problems associated with older age can be improved by physical exercise, even at low intensity. Bike riding with a followup barbecue with other members is very popular. However, it is the walking group that has enabled a lot of our members to follow the new fitness trends for seniors. It is an early Thursday morning start for the walking group along the Redcliffe Peninsula waterfront circuit. Afterwards the group enjoys a coffee and

Pine Rivers VIEW Club AT OUR October meeting Sharnelle and Kerri from the Crime Prevention Unit came to speak to us. What a fabulous morning. It was a most enjoyable and fun session of interacting with these two police officers and learning so much about how we can protect ourselves from being a victim of crime. We all went home much wiser about our safety. Our next meeting is on November 18 at Murrumba Downs Tavern on Dohles Rocks Rd at 11am. Our speaker will be an education officer from RACQ, who will be talking on agerelated road safety issues, and should be most interesting. If you are new to this area, retiring soon, or just want to meet some new friends and have things to do, then phone Sandra or Elizabeth to find out more about our club. We love welcoming visitors and new members. If you would like to come along next month phone Sandra 3425 2738 or Elizabeth 3886 4937 for more details.

Albany Creek NSA visits jail ON OCTOBER 15, 14 of members Albany Creek National Seniors arrived at Boggo Road Gaol to find out what it was like to be an inmate during the time it was a correctional centre. We were addressed by a former inmate and a tour guide, and were told many stories and anecdotes. This followed our visit to the Victoria Barracks the previous month and, as we are gaining an appreciation for Brisbane’s history, we may visit Toowong Cemetery next year. As well as our monthly meetings with a light supper and a guest speaker or entertainment, we have regular interest groups – golf, craft, reading groups and photography, which continue to operate successfully, along with bus trips and local outings to places such as the Victoria Barracks, Brisbane jail and a planned Bribie Island Christmas Lights boat trip. During this year, our members have travelled to Caloundra, Grand View Hotel Cleveland for Christmas in July, the Margaret Olley Exhibition, and will hopefully visit the Eumundi Markets in November for early
Christmas shopping. The Happy Snappers have enjoyed photo opportunities at Redcliffe Pier and Bee Gees Way, and captured some good sunsets at Woody Point and done some birdwatching at Cedar Creek. Knit and Knatter is a new group that has worked well – we knitted small squares that were made into blankets for the needy, as well as providing a happy social atmosphere, as we can chat while we knit. One of the blankets was given to the mother of one of our branch members. Many members have enjoyed the independent trips, and it seems Yamba was a popular choice, along with return visits to Ballina, Montville and Alexandra Headland. The Zone 102 National Seniors Conference was well attended by 11 of our members, and it is good to note their interest. Through attendance at conferences, our branch has built up close liaison with other branches by the sharing of ideas through the exchange of newsletters. We will actively follow the progress of the Strategic Planning fo-

Visitors and new members are always welcome. We meet on the second Friday night of the month at 5.30pm for light refreshments prior to a 6pm meeting at the Albany Creek Community Centre, Ernie Street, Albany Creek.
EACH Tuesday from noon–1pm, free concerts are held at Clem Jones City Hall, in Adelaide St, Brisbane. Take time out from your day to be entertained by a variety of top-class artists in Brisbane City. November 3– Ornaments of the Earth: Baroque specialists, Arioso Chamber Ensemble, celebrate the splendour of Handel’s music, including his Violin Sonata in D and the enchanting Nine German Arias, Ornaments of the Earth. November 10 – Songs My Mother Taught Me: Opening with Greg Hartay-Szabo on the Henry Willis Organ, celebrate in song with award-winning tenor Jonathon Welch and his famous School of Hard Knocks, Absolutely Everybody Choir. November 17 – Music Box: Percussimo percussion ensemble presents a mixed selection from the box – big and small screens from television and movie themes. November 27 – The Andrew Sisters Stand and Salute: Popular wartime tribute act The Andrews Sisters return to re-live the swing and boogie favourites that captured the hearts of a generation in the 1940-50s.

Newmarket VIEW Club fun THE committee members of the Newmarket VIEW Club have been busy in the past few months planning club and social outings for members. September 10 was a special outing to Bribie Island for a lunch cruise on the Ferryman boat which was enjoyed by all the members and their friends who attended. An annual club event occurred at the lunch meeting on September 23 when members were entertained with a fashion parade, with fellow members as the models. Again the spring fashions were provided by Fashions on the Go, a mobile women’s boutique provided by Rosa da Silva with some colourful and creative clothes for a woman’s wardrobe. Just before the parade all enjoyed a tasty and well-presented high tea. On October 13 our planning officer Sue organised a lunch for members at the Litse Lounge Cafe, at the Great Western Shopping Centre, which was a lovely spot to have lunch with good friends. The food was excellent and we were served by very courteous staff which enhanced the whole experience for newcomers especially. A Bring and Buy was held at our

October 27 lunch meeting with Christmas-themed goodies to buy. Funds raised will benefit the Smith Family Appeal. Guest speaker for the day was Professor Roly Sussex, a very accomplished speaker about the English language and where it is going. Tuesday, November 24 marks the final lunch meeting for VIEW
Club members which will be a fun day with games, lots of hamper raffle prizes and if members dressed with a Christmas theme for the day, they may be picked for the best dressed lucky prize. There is also a Christmas lunch menu to enjoy with a variety of fine food presented. On December 8 a bus trip excursion to the Caloundra RSL Club for our members, their partners
and friends has been planned, so we are all looking forward to sampling a festive Christmas luncheon and being entertained by the club staff. In all, a very happy and worthwhile year has been part of the life for our members who are proud to be associated with Newmarket VIEW Club. For enquires phone 0432 230 612.

Freehold retirement revolution! Open day
IF you’re considering your retirement options then you’d better lock this in your diary! Pebble Beach Freehold Retirement community will hold an open day on Friday, November 27 from 10am-2pm. This will be an ideal opportunity for those considering a revolutionary concept in active, independent retirement to tour the latest stage of this sought after development, view display homes and join friendly residents for rolling refreshments. Pebble Beach Freehold retirement community is unique because its ownership structure means residents have all the rights of freehold home owners but still get to enjoy the security and community atmosphere of a retirement community. “In this way Pebble Beach has been designed to bridge the gap between full service retirement living and owning your own home,” says sales manager Elaine Quinn. “The community doesn’t boast a swimming pool, restaurant, bowls club or
any on-site care however the community’s proximity to an abundance of services, clubs and facilities allows residents to pick and choose those they want, without being burdened by ongoing costs and service fees associated with on-site facilities they may not even use.” Pebble Beach presents the perfect solution for those active retirees who really just seek to downsize and have someone else take care of large home hassles. All on the doorstep of Bribie Island, the Sunshine Coast and a multitude of local clubs and facilities whilst still being within an easy drive of Brisbane and all major services. Pebble Beach Community at 210 Bestmann Road East, Sandstone Point, just before the bridge to Bribie Island, offers quality brand new two and three-bedroom freehold retirement homes with prices starting from $349,950. Visit Pebble Beach online at: www.pebblebeach.com.au. The sales office is open ThursdaySunday, 10am-4pm. Phone: 5429 5377.

The health and social benefits of bowls are well known in keeping you active and socially connected. Kris wants to increase bowlers’ participation in the sport and their enjoyment of the game with their friends, through her sharing of the nutritional values of certain food to complement the social and health benefits. The No.1 benign tumour in men symptoms. BPH affects more than 50% of Australian men in their sixties and 90% of men above the age of seventy. Magnus Shield® is an extract created from the pollen (the male seeds that enable flowering plants to reproduce) of various plants, including rye grass. Magnus Shield® has antiinflammatory properties which decrease swelling and improves urine flow. Magnus Shield also works on the urinary tract by relaxing the smooth muscle tone of the urethra, thus improving urine flow, increasing bladder muscle contraction to push the urine out, and relaxing the
sphincter muscles, which help hold the urine in the bladder. Together, these actions would improve the urine flow rate and reduce the amount of urine remaining in the bladder after urination, thereby decreasing urinary frequency. A number of impressive trials conducted have concluded that Magnus Shield® has a beneficial effect in the management of BPH. In a double-blind, placebocontrolled study, 60 men suffering from BPH were treated with Magnus Shield® or placebo for six months. Nocturia (frequent urination at nighttime) was improved or

Whether you’re going around the world or Australia, organising travel insurance is an essential part of preparing for your trip. Travel cover exists to protect your investment in your journey and ensure you don’t lose out, and get
medical help, if things go wrong. Many people will return from a holiday with stories about getting lost, language barriers or other minor challenges. But, if things take a turn for the worse, it is important to have financial support behind you. Accidents can happen to anyone, and medical costs overseas can reach hundreds or thousands of dol-
lars. If you are uninsured, you (or your family) can be responsible for covering any medical or other costs resulting from unexpected incidents or accidents. The Australian Government won’t pay for your medical evacuation to Australia and may not pay for medical treatment overseas. So, travellers without travel insurance can be personally liable for covering
any medical and associated costs they incur. The best time to buy insurance is as soon as you have booked or finalised your holiday so you can benefit from cancellation cover and claim back any prepaid costs if you need to cancel your trip prior to departing. If you put this off until right before your trip, you won’t be able to take advantage of this cover – and
you could lose any non-refundable costs paid. National Seniors Insurance has partnered with the experts at Cerberus to provide affordable travel insurance that has been specially designed for the over 50s, underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s. We cover a range of pre-existing medical conditions and offer phone or online medical assessment.

BUDGET or BOUTIQUE
An exciting mix of old and new
Markets in Chinatown.
Where: Kuala Lumpur What: Capital city of Malaysia, colloquially known as KL. Why: An interesting mix of Malaysian, Chinese and Indian cultures, where the traditional and the modern live side by side. Any easy eight-hour flight from Brisbane. BUDGET: EAT Petaling Street night market in the heart of KL’s Chinatown has an array of cheap treats for those wanting to sample local dishes. Choose from an
array of reasonably priced restaurants or street hawkers. Tropical fruits, roasted chestnuts, a glorious array of noodle dishes, delicious barbecued chicken wings and traditionally roasted meats are all on offer. SLEEP The Swiss Inn in Chinatown is literally in the heart of all the action. A simple, but clean hotel, room and breakfast is available at a reasonable rate. Other budget hotel options include Hotel Sentral, Pacific Express Hotel and Hotel Transit.
Kuala Lumpur at night with views of the city.
DO If you are prepared to walk and take public transport such as the very convenient light rail system, there are lots of attractions that can be easily (and cheaply) accessed in Kuala Lumpur. In addition to Petaling Street market, there is also Kuala Lumpur Central market, which has a great array of traditional arts and crafts, food stalls and tourist
souvenirs. KL also boasts some amazing architecture ranging from Islamic influenced buildings such as the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and Jamke Mosque, colonial period structures of which the Selengor Cricket Club is an example, right through to the futuristic Petronas Twin Towers. It costs nothing to stop and look! Also worth a visit is the very reasonably
priced KL Bird Park. BOUTIQUE: EAT If fine dining is your preference, then Kuala Lumpur doesn’t disappoint. A good starting point for some chic eats in KLCC, home of the Petronas Twin Towers. For a birds eye view over the city you could try Italian-inspired Marini’s on 57 or Troika Sky Dining.

Peep into the past with a Sandgate Museum guided tour
BECAUSE of the popularity and success of the Sandgate Historical Museum’s Historical tours Peeping into the Past, extra guided tours, with Museum Researcher and Tour Guide Pam Verney, have been arranged for early in November. On Saturday, November 7, meet with Pam at the Bald Hills Cemetery and join her on a walking tour to discover the forgotten connections between Brisbane and its pioneering past. Pam will take you on a walk through the Bald Hills Cemetery and point out the resting places of Brisbane and Sandgate’s significant pioneers and share their stories of how they shaped the city we know today. This tour includes a special opportunity to enjoy a

aspects of this popular old seaside resort before walking with Pam on an interesting journey to view some of the architectural beauty of the residences throughout Sandgate’s streets, avenues and beachfront. Handle bill splitting and tipping without pain INTERNATIONALLY, Australian travellers are not known as great tippers – it’s not part of our culture. But in the spirit of when in Rome, do as the Ro-
mans do, stepping up and following local customs – including tipping – is the way of the enlightened traveller. This is where the Tipulator app can help by assist-
ing with bill splitting and calculating the tip. Tipulator is available on iPhone, iPad and Android with further information at iTunes Preview.

Resurrection at the Cross No longer King’s Cross … it’s Potts Point
I’M SURE many of you remember the “good old days” around the King’s
Cross area. Growing up in Sydney, as teenagers we would occasionally ignore parental advice and drive the Morris Minor through Macleay
Street and Darlinghurst Road to gawk at all the weirdo types as if they came from another planet. If we had enough money, we’d stop in at the old El Rocco,

a subterranean cave where great jazz musicians like Don Burrows and George Golla performed regularly. In other words, King’s Cross was a place that most suburbanites would go for a naughty time out, “but wouldn’t want to live there”. Of course it’s all had to change. Rising inner-city property prices have seen to that. Not only has there been a big clean-up of the streets and the “undesirables”, but liquor laws now force bottle shops to close at 10pm and there’s a 1.30am lockout from licensed premises. The early morning harddrinking crowd has moved on, to the relief of the local residents and cops, though resented by those businesses affected. It’s a transition that will re-balance the suburb considerably and move real estate prices higher still. In fact, King’s Cross is not a suburb, nor a postcode. It’s a village called Potts Point, which has a much more genteel ring to it. Even the four-star Mercure Hotel, right above King’s Cross station, is now called Mercure Potts Point. The hotel is a natural vantage point from which to view street life, the changes taking place and the new vibe around the precinct. It’s also a much safer place to walk around, even at night. There’s more to it than just a name change. Gentrification brings with it a different demographic, a more sophisticated crowd intent on moving the market up…in style, fashion and naturally, price. A few years ago, five-star restaurants were thin on the

ground, but now there are many contenders in the upscale eateries normally associated with The Rocks, Surry Hills, Darling Harbour and the CBD. Fortunately, there hasn’t been wholesale destruction of the heritage listed Art Deco buildings and Victorian terraces, which are ripe for renovation. It’s to be hoped that strict planning regulations will allow for modernisation without

Fifty Plus Club blooms By Les Brooks THE destination for the September outing of the Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club was the annual Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. We had another great attendance of our members who all eagerly awaited the arrival of their coach to take them up the hill to view the amazingly beautiful world-renowned gardens. Our morning tea stop on the way was at Picnic Point, with cakes, slices, tea and coffee provided by a few of our lovely members. The next stop was at Toowoomba’s Queens Park to wander around the beautiful display of colourful flowers and contemplate what your own garden might look like if you had the time and more importantly, green fingers. After walking around the gardens, it was then time to make our way to Toowoomba City Golf Club for a wonderful buffet lunch. Following lunch it was
Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meeting PREPARATIONS for Christmas are being made and the last 2015 meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will take place on Thursday, December 3. Attendance is by invitation only. At this meeting there will be the usual end-of-year activities such as presentation of prizes to successful exhibitors, and other entertainment. This club will then go into recess for the festive season. If you haven’t already done so, give some attention to your caladium, dahlia, tuberous begonia, or other bulbs stored over the winter period. These should be shooting by now and need to be planted. November is a good month to prune azaleas and other spring flowering shrubs if flowering is finished. Don’t forget to keep topping up mulch on the

After a very enjoyable day, it was time to make our way back home, with much discussion on the bus about what you could do to make your own garden as beauti-
ful as those in Toowoomba. Forest Lake Fifty Plus Club meets on the third Friday of the month at the Lions Richlands Club, Pine Road, at Richlands 10.30am sign in for an 11am start. New members are always welcome. For more information on

Meet the desert rose Tamborine Mt trip a great success OUR bus trip to “Springtime on the Mountain” at Tamborine Mountain was a great success. We visited several outstanding gardens, wandering along winding pathways to admire rhododendrons, magnolias, camellias, Japanese maples, azaleas, clivias, orchids and massed plantings of spring blooms. We came home laden down with lots of wonderful plants for our gardens. Our guest speaker for November is Marise Stephens who will be talking on the cultivation of the beautiful desert rose (Adenium obesum). It is a spectacular succulent plant with red, pink and white flowers and very useful as an indoor plant. She will be bringing along some plants to show and

THE Cat’s Cradle is a mystery thriller production where on the eve of his retirement a Scotland Yard Inspector reopens a “cold case” which had ruined his career and haunted him for twelve years. He returns to the remote village where once he had met with co-operation in his investigative efforts but now faces a barely veiled hostility. Explore a corner of inner-suburban Brisbane STEPHEN Nothling’s paintings invite you into his endearing neighbourhood in a series that documents Louisa Street where the artist has lived for 14 years. In The last street in Highgate Hill, Nothling imagines life behind the facade of 38 houses that line his street on the fringe of the Brisbane suburb of Highgate Hill. Gathering clues,
bowerbird-style, his work is based on observations from his daily walks when he soaks up the incremental and dramatic changes to the households and gardens he passes. The work captures a moment in time, collaged together with lashings of humour and a unique aesthetic that will captivate and charm. It is a deeply personal interpreta-
tion of inner Brisbane that will resonate well beyond its geographical confines to explore our sense of community, our love for our city and all its unique locales. Visit Clem Jones Gallery at Museum of Brisbane, Level 3, Brisbane City Hall. Adelaide and Ann Street, Brisbane. Open 10am-5pm, seven days per week, until January 31, 2016.
