Life as a retiree For retired people how many days in a week are there? 6 Saturdays, 1 Sunday When is a retiree’s bedtime? Three hours after he falls asleep on the couch. What’s the biggest gripe of retirees? There is not enough time to get everything done. Why don’t retirees mind being called Seniors? The term comes with a 10% percent discount. Among retirees what is considered formal attire? Tied shoes and with their teeth in. Why are retirees so slow to clean out the basement, attic or garage? They know that as soon as they do, one of their adult kids will want to store stuff there. What is the best way to describe retirement? The never ending coffee break. What do you do all week? Monday to Friday- nothing. Saturday and Sunday I rest! Old age is when former classmates are so grey and wrinkled and bald, they don’t recognise you.

Writers’ block BLOCK out a day to work on your writing craft, with expert advice from Matthew Condon, Louise Cusak and Simon Groth. Date is Saturday November 22, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Robina Branch Library. To book your free spot, phone 5581 1600.

community news Good Mates DRIVING homeward after a school pick-up, I decided to fake a cough – it was really too cold to go swimming and I needed a good reason to give it a miss. I explained that it would not be sensible to go in the pool (heated though it is) but a few minutes later, a little voice came from behind - “I don’t hear much coughing, Gill.” It was hard to keep a straight face as I contemplated how hard it is to fool a five year old. Memories are made of moments like these! Caladen is not technically my grandson and I am not a real grandmother but we have never let that get in the way of our relationship. We have shared a bond across the generations for almost all his life. From the age of two, when he attended day care, he has loved coming to “Gill’s house” once a week and we play with LEGO and play dough, swim in the pool

and even occasionally sip a lemonade at happy hour at the retirement estate where I live. Caladen has met many of my friends there and has always enjoyed mixing with a different generation. Now that he is five we regularly spend time exploring maths or reading on my ipad, playing with more challenging LEGO,

drawing or just trying to extend his swimming skills (he is already quite a competent swimmer and loves the water). Caladen’s mum, Saskia says, “My parents live interstate and his other grandparents both still work so it’s great that he has this inter-generational time with Gill.” I know that as he and I both become older, he may not want to spend

as much time with me, but for now I cherish his enthusiasm for life, curiosity about the world and delightful conversation. Gill MacDonald

community news Battle of Leyte Gulf 70th anniversary THE 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf led to the liberation of the Philippines after invasion by the Japanese in 1941. David Mattiske, now 89, of Southport served in HMAS Shropshire during the October 23-26 Leyte Gulf campaign. Here he shares some of his thoughts and recollections. “The fascinating story of the Battle of Leyte Gulf is virtually unknown in Australia; yet Leyte Gulf was not only the largest naval battle of World War II but the largest naval battle in history. The campaign saw more ships and sailors of the Royal Australian Navy in battle than any other operation. The Japanese introduced the kamikaze for the first time on October 25 on aircraft carriers off the Philippine islands of Leyte and Samar. Earlier, on October 20, 1944 General Douglas MacArthur had landed 100,000 troops in an invasion of Leyte in his promised ‘...I shall return’. In four major clashes in

Shropshire, together with USS Light Cruisers Phoenix and Boise, made up the right flank of the battle line, opening fire and sinking the Japanese flagship Yamashiro.” To observe the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte, the Gold Coast Navy Week Committee is organising a commemora-

tion service and reunion luncheon for Sunday October 19 at Currumbin RSL, 165 Duringan Street. Special guest will be Philippine Ambassador to Australia, Her Excellency Belen Anota together with other dignitaries. For further details, please contact Mrs Lyn Dee, P.O. Box 869, Mudgeeraba. One month left to confirm your place at Gallipoli 2015

AUSTRALIANS offered a place in the ballot for Anzac Day commemorations at Gallipoli in 2015 have just a few weeks left to accept or decline their place at next year’s centenary Dawn Service. The deadline to confirm attendance at the commemorations is 11:59 pm AEDT Saturday, 25 October 2014. Travel booking details must also be provided by this time. People can accept or decline their place by logging into their ballot account via www.gallipoli2015.dva.gov.au or, if they have forgotten their account details, calling Ticketek on 1300 364 002. People who have expressed interest are encouraged to accept or decline their place as soon as possible. There are many people on the wait list eager to attend the commemorations, and it is important to give those people as much time as possible to organise and pay for their trip. When an attendance pass is returned it is re-issued to the next person on the wait list. More than 230 places

have already been released to the wait list and further releases are expected as those who were initially offered a place in the ballot decline their passes. The wait list will operate until 31 March 2015. Those without tickets may consider visiting Gallipoli on 6 August 2015 for the Battle of Lone Pine Centenary commemoration service. The Battle at Lone Pine saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Gallipoli campaign. Australians may also consider attending another Dawn Service in Australia or overseas or watch the television broadcast of the Gallipoli and VillersBretonneux services on the ABC. Another option is to visit Gallipoli at another time during the Centenary year. Bumpers will look like new

WE’VE all done it before, got a little too wide when pulling into the car park, reversed into the hubby’s trailer and hugged the garage walls a little too closely. There is nothing more embarrassing than driving around in a scratched car but most of the time it’s not bad enough to pay high premiums on insurance or panel beaters to have fixed. Not to mention having to

live without your car for a day or two while it is getting fixed, it is inconvenient and frustrating. Fortunately, a business has noticed this gap in the market or car repairs and has provided a service that is convenient, professional and fast. BumperTech will come to where your vehicle is parked and repair scrapes, scratches and those unsightly damaged bumpers and minor panel damage. Forget searching high and low for matching touch-up paint, BumperTech uses a Dupont mini paint system that matches the colours. BumperTech is a cost effective repair service when compared to an insurance claim. “Research shows a well presented car brings maximum price and speedy sale,” John Cowan, BumperTech representative said. A five year warranty is given with every job. For an obligation-free quote on BumperTech services phone 0412 241 014.

Ignoring your hearing loss? New Research shows “Use It or Lose It!” OVER 40s: The Need for Hearing Aids is On Par with the Need for Glasses It’s ironic that as we get older, we generally get wiser and more content, but our sight and hearing can deteriorate, often slowly enough that we don’t notice that the quality of these senses is considerably different than when we were younger. You may be aware that your sight needs regular check-ups, but perhaps you consider hearing problems to be the realm of rock stars and the elderly- and definitely elderly rock stars! The surprising reality is, however, for Australians over forty the need for hearing aids is almost on par with the need for glasses. What did you say? Even a mild hearing loss can really affect the clarity of sounds and daily communication. Sometimes identifying that your hearing may not be what it used to be occurs in specific situations, like hearing someone talking to you when there is background noise. Or you might find that you are turning up the volume on the TV, or

often asking someone to repeat themselves. Use it, or Lose it Sadly research shows that the longer a person leaves their hearing loss unattended, the poorer the hearing becomes over time. Known as auditory deprivation, the brain loses its ability to process certain sounds clearly. Unfortunately hearing falls into the ‘use it or lose it’ category. But by using a hearing aid, you can continue to stimulate the brain with the full spectrum of sounds and pitches, meaning that these areas of the brain remain useful and active. Jelly bean size, but packed with benefits The development of digital technology is perhaps

the most significant advancement in hearing aids in recent years. Not only has it resulted in improved sound quality, but it means that all hearing aids can be uniquely programmed to match an individual’s hearing levels. Hearing aids have also become fully automatic, meaning that you can insert the device and forget about it. If you have a busy lifestyle and are often in social environments, you will need a higher level of noise reduction than someone who spends most of their time quietly at home. Yes the hearing aid, as tiny as it is, has benefited from millions of dollars worth of international research and technology breakthroughs. But more im-

portantly it can return your hearing to levels that you may have experienced 10-20 years ago. Hearing specialist Don Hudson What now? Attention: Victoria Barracks Brisbane Now Open! DURING the centenary commemorations of World War One, the staff of Army Museum South Queensland, on behalf of the Australian Army History Unit, will conduct guided tours of the Barracks by appointment. Devonshire Tea at $5/head is then served in the Officers Mess – which is quite a unique experience in itself. Victoria Barracks on Petrie Terrace, Brisbane, has a long and interesting history dating back to 1859 when the first Governor of Queensland Sir George Bowen requested better security for the fast growing colony. The Barracks has been a home to many Army personnel through the South African War, the World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and the more recent conflicts. range of allowances and concessions to help age pensioners meet everyday living costs, the fact is that the most disadvantaged are unable to afford even the most basic standard of living.” “It is vital that concessions and government contributions for age pensioners are targeted at those who need them most,” he said. Mr Henley said age pensioners who didn’t own their own home were struggling on two fronts. On the one hand, Commonwealth Rent Assistance is failing to meet the increasing cost of renting in the private market. On the other hand, there continues to be long waiting lists for suitable social housing as an alternative to private rental. Mr Henley said that the figures in the report were based on a very austere living standard, and provided little room for improvement or protection from unexpected costs or crises. community news Scaling down …. house too big! RECENT surveys of home sellers and buyers 50 years of age and older revealed some surprising insights. For instance, nearly half of surveyed seniors made the internet part of their home selling process, while more than two thirds of them used the internet in their home buying search. This clearly demonstrates that people born before the digital age are far more computer savvy than they’re sometimes given credit for. Even more surprising may be that the majority of seniors did not relocated to some distant destination, but instead kept close to home, with a quarter moving less than 25 klms away from their old neighbourhood and over half staying within 12 klms of it. As you plan for retirement or semiretirement, what’s your next move? Is it in the same town or to another state or country ? Is it in country town or in a beachside community? Will it be a house or in an active over 55 community ? There are so many choices available! Boomers & Beyond on the Gold Coast. Many of my buyer clients are considering the Gold Coast for retirement, purchasing investment properties to eventually live in once they have finished work.. Whether it’s a new over 55 apartment or a free standing home, its important to think ahead and prepare for your future needs. Just because a home is single level does not make it truly accessible.

As Active Adults become less agile, many will have to engage in substantial home modification or be prepared to sell and move into accommodation that is more suitable for their future needs. House costs and garden maintenance become issues that can be stressful. Even though none of us has a crystal ball for what lies ahead its important to put some forward thinking in place to prepare for your future needs.

Granny flat fees scrapped GOLD Coast Mayor Tom Tate has announced infrastructure fees for family accommodation dwellings (up to 100m²) will be completely waived for the duration of Council’s term. Council recently supported a Mayoral Minute to reinstate the popular discount that was inadvertently overridden during budget deliberations. The Mayor said that his fundamental policy intent was to keep families together and that the policy deserved to continue. “This Council is in the business of making sensible planning decisions and there is nothing more sensible than making the most of existing infrastructure,” said Cr Tate. “My fundamental view is our community is at its strongest and most resilient

when families live close to one another.” “I was determined to slash the red tape that made it prohibitively expensive for families to accommodate ageing grandparents close to home.” The Mayor expects a social welfare windfall from the decision. “There are many demands on modern families and a clear need for more flexible living arrangements,” said Cr Tate. “Many grandparents step into the role of babysitters and carers and having them close by will make the world of difference to many.” Some residents are expected to save up to $20,000 on infrastructure fees. community news Tried everything? You need oxygen therapy A vital, healthy body is critically dependent on oxygen. You can live for weeks without food, days without water, but only minutes without oxygen. Increased need for oxygen can occur in heart disease, anaemia, poor circulation, lung conditions or lack of exercise, aging and degeneration, illness—or injury, surgery or toxic exposure. Hyperbaric chambers are a proven and medicallyrecognised method of boosting oxygen levels in the body. They work by increasing both the pressure and concentration of

O2, driving more of it into your blood stream. Whilst commonly used in many other countries, they are only just starting to become popular in Australia outside of hospital facilities. The Australian-made HYPO2 hyperbaric chamber is the only one in Australia TGA-listed as a CL IIB Medical Device. At our Tallebudgera clinic we have two HYPO2 chambers, the standard lyingdown one, and our new arrival—a sitting-up one. This is the only upright one in this country, and is ideal for those with re-

stricted movement. A typical session lasts one hour and costs about the same as a massage. Our observation is that people often rest deeply during this time, then emerge looking relaxed, fresher and younger. With regular use, longer term benefits can include better sleep, improved brain functioning, faster wound healing or recovery, heightened immune system functioning, improved energy levels, and more. community news Renewable Energy Target Campaigns ramping up

A major campaign concerning Australia’s Renewable Energy Target is about to begin in marginal seats in Queensland in the lead-up to the state election; among other actions that should also make the Federal Government really sit up, take notice and act accordingly. The Australian Solar Council, the Queensland Council of Unions and Queensland Conservation are embarking on a high profile campaign over the next 5 months encouraging Queensland’s many solar households and others to support political parties that back good solar policies. “Since Campbell Newman’s LNP was elected two and a half years ago, unemployment has hit its highest point in more than a decade, rising to 6.8%. Mr Newman has supported the Abbott Government’s push to dismantle the RET, and if this is allowed to happen thousands more Queenslanders will be unemployed,” said Ron Monaghan, General Secretary of the Queensland Council of Unions. “Queensland is the solar capital of Australia with over 330,000 homes with solar on their roofs, nearly 25% of all homes. This investment creates jobs, reduces power bills and supports a clean energy future,” said Toby Hutcheon, Executive, Queensland Conservation. In related news, some of the country’s best known community and consumer groups; including Brotherhood of St. Laurence, ACOSS, the ATA and the Consumer Utilities Advocacy Centre,

have called on the Federal Government to leave the Renewable Energy Target alone. In a letter to Prime Minister, the signatories state: “In recommending a cut to the RET, the Warburton review panel seems to be ignoring the results of the research and analysis that it commissioned … We urge the government instead to focus on other areas that have had a vastly more significant effect on driving up power bills. These include electricity network pricing, wholesale gas prices and retail competition and regulation.” Earlier this month, the Australian Technology Associated (ATA) warned yet another sector to suffer if certain Warburton review recommendations are implemented is the voluntary GreenPower scheme, which 600,000 Australians participate in. The review recommended electricity purchases through GreenPower be included within the mandated annual RET targets. “GreenPower will basically collapse overnight if the Federal Government chooses to adopt this recommendation,” Damien Moyse, the ATA’s Policy & Research Manager, said. It’s understood Labor’s environment spokesman Mark Butler has accepted an invitation from Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane, for a meeting to discuss the RET. While doing Mr. Macfarlane “a courtesy” by listening to what he has to say, Mr. Butler says Labor won’t support the recommendations from the Warburton review. Media release: energymatters.com.au

Clinic to determine whether this revolutionary laser treatment would be beneficial. Their laser treatment uses the latest technology and reduces the need to use topical

medications which are often less than satisfactory. No anaesthetic is required and it is a walk-in, walkout procedure with no pain. Private Health rebates are available. Nail

fungus, or onychomycosis, as it’s medically referred to, is often characterised by a change in nail colour, thickening and distortion of the nail, and often debris under

the nail which can become smelly. “Our Service is conveniently located in Robina and Carrara. The treatment involves a general clean-up of the nails, assessment of the infection within the nail and a laser treatment plan to eradicate the unsightly fungus.” “Our Podiatrists will meticulously and painlessly ‘debulk’ the nails prior to treatment, thinning them gently with specialised sterile equipment. “This is imperative to ensure the effectiveness of the laser treatment while

resulting in cosmetic improvement, and self-esteem.” “There is no harmful sideeffects or down-time, and the procedure is extremely well tolerated.” Previous treatment involved anti-fungal medication, exhaustive topical treatments and even surgery to remove the affected nails. “Laser is now the gold standard treatment for fungal nail disorders of the toes and fingers,” Chris said, who has witnessed some amazing results and is extremely pleased with the success of the laser treatment. “Now is the ideal time to get your nails looking good for summer,” he said So to have healthy looking feet and hands for the warm weather, phone The Gold Coast Nail Laser Clinic on 5562-5055 for a no-obligation initial consultation today.

It’s your legal responsibility to protect your family and your assets. Even if you do have a Will you may need to update it if you haven’t recently. You cannot afford to leave your family to fight the government after you’ve gone. Dean Bainbridge, Principal at Bainbridge Legal I’ve been dealing with deceased estates for more than 10 years. They are some of the most distressing events when there is no legal Will. People just don’t realise what it costs to settle an Estate, even a small one. And it can drag on for months and even years if there is no Will in place. Worse still, the Government lawyer is the first to get paid before the family gets any benefit. I advise all my clients to make a legal Will and will not manage their legal affairs unless they have one. It’s not worth the hassle – for me or them. It saves everyone in the long run.

latter a particular problem on the Gold Coast. SCAMwatch is an easyto-access website run by the Australian Competition and Consumer C o m m i s s i o n . SCAMwatch can assist consumers and small businesses in recognising, avoiding and reporting scams. DSC Edwards’ detailed presentation at the Forum covered a vast range of information relating to fraud and cyber crime. “Cyber crime is a business” and thousands of people around the world make a lucrative living from cyber crime, with particular reference made to Nigeria. In the UK, cyber crime is viewed as seriously as terrorism, natural disasters and armed conflict. Seniors tend to be targeted by fraudsters because of access to superannuation and having paid off mortgages or, in the reverse, the worry of heading towards retirement without enough savings. Emphasised by DSC Edwards was that many criminals are after a person’s personal and business data, including but not limited to utility accounts, credit cards and banking details, considered commodities of value that can be bought, sold and traded once stolen. These items can be obtained through, for example, mail box theft, lost wallets, home and vehicle burglaries, public records, dumpsters, social media. Credit card skimming is another method used by criminals, with it stressed to always protect your pin numbers and passwords as well. Today’s technology allows “fake documents and identities to be created and presented that are equal to the quality of the original documents.” Cyber extortion and the malware Ransomware were also noted by DSC Edwards as ways of obtaining money from victims, with the DSC saying to turn off the modem router, or internet access, to your computer when not in use, such as at night, to limit access by criminals.“Not even the best hacker in the world can access your computer if it is turned off.” The free Senior Wiser Safer booklet issued by the Queensland Police Service has information on scams and fraud and points on property security. To contact the Gold Coast District of Neighbourhood Wa t c h Q u e e n s l a n d , 0412 707 186.

community news Top tips for protecting yourself from elder abuse DON’T give your PIN to anyone. Don’t give your internet banking details to anyone. Don’t permit a friend, carer or family member to register your account for internet banking. If you need assistance, make sure you keep your password a secret. Before loaning money, giving any money, moving in with family, allowing family to move in with you……get independent legal advice. Independent legal advice is: not a lawyer chosen by a family member and is advice provided to you alone and not in the company of a family member. Consult Centrelink before loaning or gifting money, property, or moving in with a family member as your aged pension could be affected.

Make a Will and review it every 2-3 years. The Public Trustee of Queensland offers a free Will service. Prior to reviewing your Will, obtain a capacity assessment from your GP and keep it with your Will. Make an Enduring Power of Attorney and review every 2-3 years. The Public Trustee of Queensland also provides this service. Consider the following before appointing an attorney under an Enduring Power of Attorney: don’t sign the document until you fully understand the document and its power. You can choose when the power starts, and it does not have to begin immediately. Once the financial power starts, the attorney has full control over all of your assets eg: the power to sell

your house. Once the personal and health decisions power starts, the attorney has the power to place you in a nursing home. Choose an attorney you trust implicitly. Consider appointing two attorneys to act “jointly”, i.e. they both have to agree before a decision is made and it is more likely to safeguard you from abuse. Join a group and keep fit and healthy. Stay active and keep in contact with friends, neighbours and extended family. A risk factor for elder abuse is social isolation. Speak up! If you suspect elder abuse of yourself or a neighbour or friend call Seniors’ Legal and Support Service on 3214 6333. Source: “Queensland Focus”, Elder Abuse Prevention Unit

New Alzheimer’s Study reaches out to Seniors Community A new study on Alzheimer’s disease has begun on the Gold Coast and is recruiting healthy seniors to volunteer in this exciting new trial. The TOMMORROW study seeks to learn more about the genetic risk for developing mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease and whether an investigational medication might prove effective in delaying the first symptoms of this condition. Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating disease and diagnoses are increasing as the world’s population ages. Currently 35.6 million people worldwide are living with some form of dementia. In recent years the focus of clinical research in Alzheimer’s disease has begun to shift toward prevention, which is what this international study is aiming to investigate. “This is an important trial that is aimed at reducing the burden of Alzheimer’s disease.”

said Project Director, Professor Lyn Griffiths of QUT (Queensland University of technology). “Research on this increasingly common disorder is needed so that we can understand its development and find better ways to slow the progress and to treat this serious condition.” An individual may be eligible to participate in the TOMMORROW study if he or she: • Is between the ages of 65 and 83 years • Is in good physical and mental health • Has a project partner, such as a spouse, close friend, or adult family member. owners direct. This means that home owners do not have to leave the park to access services, can ask questions and be informed about the products that are available to our age group. At these Expos, ARPQ provides a morning tea and gives residents an opportunity to get to know ARPQ committee members, who all have a professional background or skill sets. In addition to this we run workshops for our members to give them a greater understanding of the legislation and to discuss residential parks life in general. Last year the Queensland Government carried out probably the most comprehensive survey ever, giving home owners the opportunity to have their say about park living. A copy of this valuable survey and analysis is available from the Department of Housing and Public Works website or the ARPQ website on the Special Bulletins page.

Qualified in all facets required of a professional lifeguard, including rescue boards and tubes, jet skis and helicopter rescue crew, Warren has advanced certificates in resuscitation, first aid, defibrillator technique, restricted coxswains and swift-water rescue. He still undertakes the gruelling albeit compul-

sory biannual lifeguard fitness test too: 750-metre ocean swim, 1600-metre beach run, 800-metre rescue-board paddle. Tops in his field, but what about life away from the job? Married for 38 years to Louise—”she is a wonderful person”—they are parents to four children aged 27 to 36, “all with a great sense of humour. We’ll catch up for a surf,

A big smile, firm handshake and friendly eyeto-eye greeting outside the Lifeguard Operations Centre on the Esplanade, Burleigh Heads was my introduction to popular local identity Warren Young, the Gold Coast’s Chief Lifeguard. community news Merchant Navy mates drop anchor at Southbank for a unique reunion By Jim Bowden IN the late evening of September 3, 1939 – the day Britain and France declared war on Germany – a U-boat commanded by Fritz-Julius Lemp was submerged and cutting through the North Atlantic Ocean at 22 knots. Dropping speed at periscope depth off the Scottish Outer Hebrides, Lemp observed a British vessel “of about 13,400 gross tonnes moving on a zigzag course”. U-30 tracked the ship for three hours until eventually, at 19.40, Lemp ordered two torpedoes to be fired. The first struck home and exploded. The ship was the S.S.

Athenia under Captain James Cook and it was the first British ship to be sunk by Nazi Germany in World War 2. Of the 1418 aboard, 98 passengers and 19 crew were killed. The event was recalled by ex-merchant mariner Brian Hunt, president of the Southeast Queensland Vindicatrix and Mariners Association, during a gathering of the Queensland section of the Naval Association at the Maritime Museum at Southbank on September 28. A policy of unrestricted warfare meant that merchant seafarers were also at risk of attack from enemy ships. The loss to Uboats in World War 1 was around 7,759,090 tonnes and 14,661 merchant seafarers were killed. In honour of this sacrifice by merchant seafarers, George V granted the title Merchant Navy to the service. Merchant seamen, although they did so as civilians, faced the same dangers of war as the regular armed forces. The merchant shipswere peace-time vessels fitted with guns for defence, although this weaponry could not withstand an enemy attack. The job of the Merchant Navy was to carry vital troops, food, fuel and equipment to wherever they were needed in the fight against the axis alliance of Germany, Italy and Japan. Historians accept that their most crucial struggle was the Battle of the At-

lantic that began on September 1939 with the torpedoing of the Athenia. Prime Minister Winston Churchill said that the only thing that frightened him during the war was the U-boat peril. All past and present Merchant Navy personnel from all countries were invited to join the SE Queensland Vindicatrix and Mariners Association’s recent remembrance service in Tweed Heads. Association secretary Jack Secker, 80, of Alexandra Hills, who served in the British Merchant Navy from 1951 to 1961 after training on TS Vindicatrix in Gloucester, England, said the group aimed to perpetuate the memory of all merchant seamen who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country .. “to meet in harmony and geniality regularly to foster this aim”. “While the inaugural meeting was formed by eight Queensland-based Brits, all ex-Vindicatrix boys, it was decided to open the association to all ex-merchant mariners,” Jack said. The former sailing ship Vindicatrix was moored at Sharpness canal in west England from 1939 to 1966 to provide a base for training boys as deck hands and stewards for the merchant navy. The courses lasted two or three months, and around 70,000 boys received their basic training there. The boys were taught ropework, boat handling, signalling, knowledge of the compass and cleaning and serving in the mess. When they left at the end of the course, they were found employment on a ship. Most of the boys came straight from leaving school, and for many it was their first time away from home. “We found the life very hard, but we acknowledge that our short stay on board rapidly turned us into young men,” Jack said.

WHAT will happen when you die? It’s one of those questions people of all ages tend to avoid but these days, there are more things to consider than whether you want to be buried or cremated; like who you want invited to your funeral (not that guy!), and how your family will gain access to your Facebook and other social media pages (where did she keep her passwords?) after you pass on. Lisa Herbert, an ABC journalist and radio presenter, has published The Bottom Drawer Book to make the conversation a little less confronting. Featuring comical illustrations and humorous text, the book offers thought-provoking questions about death and provides space for readers to leave their own ideas and plans. “Then when you go there’ll be no squabbling over how much to spend on your casket, who’ll tell stories at your funeral or which footy jumper you’ll be buried in,” said Ms Herbert. community news RSL Care celebrates Seniors Week with Senior Snapshot events RSL Care communities opened their doors and invited residents and community locals to take part in a family snapshot session to celebrate Queensland Seniors Week. The Senior Snapshots events took place at RSL Care’s Moreton Shores, Milford Grange, Fairways, Fernhill, Fairview and Chelsea communities, and provided an opportunity for families to celebrate the older Australians in their lives by capturing special memories through keepsake photographs. RSL Care Chief Executive Officer, Craig Mills said the event embraced the theme for Seniors Week, “It’s on for young and

old”, by encouraging community connections with people of all ages. “As an organisation whose passion is guiding people to make the most out of life we want to create opportunities for family, friends and the wider community to come together and celebrate older Australians,” Mr Mills said. “This is why we invited not only our residents and their families but also community locals to visit a number of our communities and spend time together, with the added bonus of having a family photograph taken by a professional photographer.” “It’s so important we recognise the valuable

How to Invest in Government Bonds

MANY pundits are predicting a substantial fall in the sharemarket. As a result many retirees are seeking a safe haven to park their funds until the sharemarket improves. With term deposits at historical low rates, government and corporate bonds offer an attractive alternative. But how can the average retiree or Self Managed Super Fund gain access to these investments? The Gold Coast Branch of Australians in Retirement have invited two specialists to speak at their next meeting about government and corporate bonds. Details of how to purchase these instruments, how to determine their market value and the risks and advantages of these investments will be discussed in detail. All Gold Coast retirees are welcome to attend the meeting as a guest free of charge. The meeting will be held at 9:30 am at the Broadbeach Seniors’ Centre, 23 T E Peters Drive, (cnr Havana Keys), Broadbeach on Wednesday 1st October. For further information or to register your attendance please contact Rob Grover at robgrover@hotmail.com. UNDER the expert guidance of highly-skilled City of Gold Coast Bush Regenerators Saul, Darcy and Clay, a group of keen locals recently explored a small section of the Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area during a free two-hour tour offered through the NaturallyGC program. Male kangaroos and females with their joeys viewed the walkers nonchalantly from a distance while the eagleeyed guides spotted three koalas high in trees, one koala tightly embracing her joey. Varieties of birds were also sighted including a pair of Royal Spoonbills and a Channel-Billed Cuckoo, said to be the largest cuckoo in the world and a brood parasite, meaning it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds which then raise the Cuckoo young. The mulberry trees, it was explained, are remnants of a time-gone-by when the area was used as farmland; the salt marshes and mangrove swamp habitat part of an estuarine system ecologically-significant on many levels. The 1200 hectare Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area is a Gold Coast City Council reserve and part of the Kombumerri traditional lands. community news Adjusting to life with your new full or partial dentures Author: The American College of Prosthodontists YOU’VE just been told you need dentures and, like most people in your position, you’re unsure and probably nervous about what to expect. Change is never easy, especially when it involves something as personal as your mouth. If you’re like most people, you place a lot of importance on your smile because you believe it is the first thing that people notice about you. Your fears are not uncommon and many of the patients we see who need dentures express the same concerns. To assist you through this process, we’ve developed a few tips to help you adjust to your new life with dentures. First, know that you’re not alone. Many denture wearers are missing multiple teeth and have a full or partial denture, which means someone you know may be going through the same transition as you and may not even be aware of it. That’s because dentures aren’t as noticeable as you may think. Dentures can be made to closely resemble the look of your natural teeth so there is little change in appearance. When you first start wearing dentures, you may find pronouncing certain words may require practice, but reading out loud and repeating troublesome words helps. If you notice your dentures “click” while you’re talking, speak slower. Your new dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you get used to them. The

dentures may also feel loose while the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to keep them in place. This feeling will fade as your mouth becomes accustomed to your new dentures. However, during this time, you may want to consider using a small amount of denture adhesive to help keep your dentures in place. You also may find your dentures occasionally slip when you laugh, cough or smile. To fix this problem just reposition your dentures by gently biting down and swallowing. This is another instance where a small amount of denture adhesive may come in handy. It will help keep your dentures in place and make it easier to speak clearly and avoid any embarrassing denture slips. However, if you continue to experience issues with your dentures, be sure to consult your dentist or prosthodontist. To get more helpful information about dentures and how to gain confidence during the adjustment period, including additional tips from the American College of Prosthodontists’ panel of experts, explore this site. For more Information Call Liz and John at Noble Denture Design on 5525 2899. See our advert on page 12 herein. Halcyon Knitters stitch up penguins

PROVING they are a tight-knit bunch, members of the Halcyon Waters Craft and Chat Group at Hope Island have pulled together for Australian penguins affected by oil spills. Six knitters from the group have created 80 pint-size jackets and made them available to one of Australia’s most signifi-

cant fairy penguin populations, Phillip Island in Victoria. The jackets have been sent to the Knits for Nature program on the island and are on display in a visitors centre ready for deployment when needed. More than 30 of the jackets were knitted by Halcyon Waters home owner

Pat Rice. Group spokeswoman Brenda Whalon said the women took on the penguin jacket project earlier this year after hearing about the potentially fatal impact of oil spillages on small penguins. “If they ingest too much of the toxic sludge by pecking at their coats it can kill them,” she said.

“It’s been found that woollen jackets covering their main body areas can reduce how much they take in. “So using a lot of donated wool, we were able to produce the 80 jackets that are now ready for use when they’re needed.” Halcyon Waters Community Manager Sue Carroll said it was great to see home owners using their skills to help animals in need. “People very generously donated their time, effort and materials to the cause,” she said. “It was very much a case of the community coming together and it was great to see home owners coming up with an outsidethe-box idea for helping animals in need.” Halcyon Waters home owners actively participate in a range of community-based initiatives including charity functions and fundraising events.

Understanding Residential Aged Care WELCOME to the first of a regular monthly column brought to you by Opal Specialist Aged Care (formerly Domain Principal Group). You may not be looking for aged care for yourself, but know someone who is or will need to in the future. So it’s good to know what options are available. We understand that deciding about care is never easy especially in an emergency situation. As Regional Admissions

Manager for Opal Aged Care Homes across the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads area, I see many families experiencing a number of emotions when thinking about aged care. I can help you understand the complexities including where to find information on aged care homes, how to work out costs, how to apply and finally moving in and managing your affairs. We aim to unravel the myths around residential

aged care. Sometimes the smallest things cause the greatest anxiety and people often ask ‘can I take my own belongings?’, ‘what’s the food like?’ or ‘can I still garden’. I can say our Homes provides some of the most passionate and caring staff you’ll ever meet and the homes offer choices around activities, meals and care options. We have a Five Steps to

Residential Aged Care booklet, which you can access via our website or I can send this to you. Enjoying Your Golden Years, or feeling Retirement Income Insecurity? DID you know one in three elderly Australians are living in poverty, despite being among the most highly educated senior citizens in the world? Retirement lifestyle crises There is a retirement savings/lifestyle crises, and people are coming to terms with the fact that they probably aren’t going to be able to save enough to just cruise through their money and slowly deplete their Super from age 65 to 100. With the average 60-64 year old estimated to have less than $80,000 in Super — much less than the lump sum needed to maintain current lifestyles — there is an obvious need to find ways to save more or generate supplemental income, starting now, and continuing throughout retirement. As well as the money, many highly experienced retirees have a desire to stay involved – to be part of something bigger & better – learn something new – make new friends – and make a difference. The Solution for many retirees For many, the solution may be to consider franchise or direct marketing opportunities that offer very low barriers into entrepreneurship requiring only a few hours per month to operate successfully – and often provide training, support & encouragement along the way. Retirees that realize they need activities to keep them busy, relevant, in good health and connected to others may find the time, energy, and initial cost to participate in these opportunities make sense. Ensure your retirement years are truly ‘Golden’ By thinking in terms of creating a ‘Personal Retirement Lifestyle’ that includes replacing a work identity, staying relevant & connected as well as keeping mentally & physically fit, retirees can avoid retirement income insecurity – and ensure the years from 65 onward are truly ‘Golden’. Helensvale Probus Club THE month of September was one full of activities for many of the members, The September meeting again was an interesting one with the guest speaker Sue Spicer from U3A giving our members, valuable information on the courses and activities available for any interested persons. Our members who travelled to Longreach had a wonderful experience, and on their return having many tales to tell of the trip………….Nola continues to have great support for the outings to the theatre, with members who attend speak of the outing with enthusiasm, ready to go again. Recently a small contingent of members joined Marie on a train and walk excursion to the Roma St Gardens and what a treat for those in attendance, we were

joined by two members from Seniors Citizens who also thoroughly enjoyed this outing, how fortunate we are to be able to walk from the train station directly to these beautiful gardens, where no amount of work has gone to create such beauty with so many interesting exhibits, and superb layouts. All of which on the day made one realize we are very privileged to have access to a wonderful facility of beauty and tranquility. This is a must do outing. Morning tea at Cabbage Tree Point on Prawn Farm visit

ON one of the first sunny days of Spring, forty two members of the Burleigh Waters Probus Club headed out from Burleigh Heads to meet our guide for the day – James Herbst, a fifth generation local resident and nephew of the owner of the Prawn Farm that was the focus of the day’s trip. We started off with morning tea and cake at Cabbage Tree Point, a beautiful spot on South Moreton Bay. There some if us ordered prawns for pickup later, and we embarked on a guided and narrated tour of the cane fields, learning about different types of cane and the processes that make use of every part of the cane plant to maximise profit for the farmers. Then came our tour of the Prawn Farm which is operated as Gold Coast Marine Aquaculture, employing 40 people and having a capacity close to 700 tonnes of Black Tiger Prawns per year. We were surprised by how technically sophisticated the process is, with great care being taken to ensure that breed-

ing pairs of prawns are genetically matched, and that in-breeding within families of prawns does not occur. Holy Catfish… Heaven forbid that we should eat an in-bred prawn, even if it has been genetically engineered!! After an excellent lunch at Harrigans Drift Inn in Calypso Bay, the afternoon brought a tour of the Norwell area, including a drop-in at a Strawberry Farm where some of us purchased some delicious strawberries to go with our delicious prawns. Some of us also made purchases at ‘Yatala Pies’ on our way home. A great day out, and a testament to Australian farming, that in addition to maximizing technical sophistication and efficiency, also places great emphasis on producing the highest quality food in a way that does not adversely affect the environment. PEOPLE interested in machine knitting meet at The Franklin Craft Centre, Mudgeeraba, with our next meeting to be held on Monday 10th November, commencing 9am to around noon. After our usual Show and Tell of members’ knitting (and other craft works) during the month we will be demonstrating stripping down a Singer knitting machine for its annual service. A similar demonstration on a Brother machine is scheduled for our first meeting next year. As a group our members come from areas as wide apart as northern New South Wales to beyond Brisbane and we have a combined experience with various makes of

knitting machines, so are happy to help anyone who has a knitting machine tucked away that they think they might like to bring out and use. The machines can knit finer yarns for the warm weather as well as heavier for garments sent to relatives and friends in colder climates. Besides our own knitting we try to help charities with anything we can do for them wherever we can. Our meetings are happy events. We always have a cheerful cuppa on hand and visitors are assured of a friendly welcome. We do our best to give help to beginners and those coming back to the craft after time away. LOCALS will have the opportunity to fire questions at the Federal Parliamentary Speaker, Bronwyn Bishop, at the upcoming Gold Coast Community Expo and Seniors Forum. Ms Bishop will take part in a Q & A session at the annual event at Jupiters Hotel and Casino. The Expo and Forum will feature exhibitors across a range of areas including health care, legal and financial planning, aged care and seniors’ lifestyle choices. Gold Coast MP Steven Ciobo, who is hosting the event, said the Expo and Forum was a onestop shop for the community, in particular seniors. “This year will be our biggest and best yet, with excellent exhibits, entertainment, lucky door prizes and a free morning tea,” he said. Mr Ciobo said seniors make a tremendous contribution to the community and our city. “As a Federal Member, I believe it is important to keep the community informed about the matters and issues relevant to them,” he said. “The Expo and Forum will provide an opportunity for everyone to discuss their concerns and gather information on activities and services available for them. “A variety of service providers, businesses and government agencies will have stalls on the day to provide relevant and up-to-date information. Representatives from Centrelink and the Department of Health & Ageing will also be on hand to answer questions.” Mr Ciobo said the Abbott Coalition Government remained committed to supporting senior Australians. Last month pensioners received an increase in the Age Pension. For singles on the maximum rate the increase was $11.50 a fortnight – to $854.30. For couples on the maximum rate the combined increase was $17.40 a fortnight – to $1,288. The Age Pension is going up with the cost of living increase for pensioners – which is higher than the increase in Male Total Average Weekly Earnings. Mr Ciobo said this is the second increase to the Age Pension this year. “It will continue to increase twice every year – just as it has in the past,” he said. Mr Ciobo said the family home is not included in the Pension assets test – and, under the Coalition, never will be. “Also, with the Abbott Government’s abolition of Labor’s Carbon Tax, power costs are falling – but we’ve kept the Energy Supplement for pensioners,” he said. “The Government is committed to providing strong support for pensioners – with twice yearly pension increases.” RSVPs are essential for the Gold Coast Community Expo and Seniors Forum. Crown carries over 70 currencies and consultants are happy to take telephone orders and are able to assist customers with advice as to the best currency to take. Check out Crown’s also offers first class travel insurance products, greatly discounted, 10% off. Also available are TravelSIM cards that provide affordable telephone contact from 190 or so countries. Wiring money overseas is also much cheaper when done through Crown. Rates are usually better than those offered by banks. The consultants can give you details. Crown’s home page is www.crowncurrency.com.au. Crown Currency Exchange is a one-stop shop for all your money needs! It’ll pay to check out their offerings on insurance too. Customers may call 1300 392 426 and pre-order. Or, email for a quote:orders@crowncurrency.com.au

CROWN Currency Exchange operates nine outlets in south east Qld, five on the Gold Coast and four in Brisbane. Seniors have always enjoyed special rates and outstanding service in all these shops. Business development manager, Tania Lewis, says, “Crown does not charge fees or commission and has a special rate for seniors. And, cash is still the cheapest way to have money to spend overseas. Yes, Crown has the debit card available, the cash passport, but the rates are almost twice as expensive as the cash rate.” Ms Lewis adds, “Because Crown does not charge fees, customers may buy smaller amounts in the months leading to their departure or need, effectively averaging the rate over that period, a kind of hedge.”

AUTO Business TAKE care of your vehicle and it should, reliably, take care of you. Here on the Gold Coast, and into New South Wales, there is no shortage of qualified people and businesses that can assist you in keeping your chosen mode of transport in top condition, and dependable. From dealerships to detailers; from Ormeau to Murwillumbah, your automotive needs are covered; however, being personally aware of the condition of your car, truck or motorbike is a good all-round first step. With tyres the only thing between the body of your vehicle and the road, it is important to keep regular tabs on tyre tread. It’s the tread that helps with grip on all surfaces travelled, from hot bitumen to gravel; rain-soaked to corrugated and everything in-between. Tyre pressure, too, should be checked regularly and should be neither too low nor too high or it could affect tread wear, gas mileage and performance. It is best to check your tyres once a month when they are still cold, using the number often located on the driver’sside door or in the Owner’s Manual.

Look under the bonnet for worn or loose belts, and whether fluids such as oil and coolant need topping up or are leaking and expert help is required. With brakes vital to the safe and smooth operation of any motor vehicle, it is recommended to have the brakes inspected at least yearly or more often if there are any signs of malfunction, such as noise or pulling or vibrations. Never ignore warning signs. Batteries can be affected by, for example, extreme temperatures. It is wise to have a technician check that your battery is charging at the correct rate. Batteries don’t last forever and may have to be replaced after three years to five years. Knowing your vehicle could ultimately save time, expense and heartache and could also open the door to better, easier communications with those offering professional automotive services. Ir should be mentioned that carrying an emergency kit in your vehicle could prove helpful in unexpected situations. Items such as a first-aid kit, jumper cables, road atlas, flashlight with extra batteries, water, non-perishable food items and blankets might just save the day.

GENERAL CAR MAINTENANCE TIPS An engine is made up of important moving parts, such as pistons, crankshaft, valves and the camshaft to name a few and engine oil ensures that these all work together properly. Tips: • Engine oil level should be regularly checked regardless of vehicle age. • Only top up oil with correct grade as specified by manufacturer. • When topping up oil do not exceed the maximum recommend level. For any oil related problems consult your owner’s manual or contact your local RAC Auto Services site. Have you checked your tyres? Tyre care is essential for maintaining vehicle safety. Tyres should be checked on a regular basis and before any long driving trips. Correctly maintained tyres will improve fuel economy, extend tyre life and improve vehicle safety. Battery maintenance The battery is the key component of your car’s electrical system and the main cause of vehicle breakdowns. A number of simple steps can be taken to ensure your battery is kept in optimum condition all year round. Check battery terminals regularly to ensure they are clean and tight. Ensure that the electrolyte level is correct, if topping up only use distilled water. Many newer batteries are maintenance free and won’t require topping up. Make sure the battery is secure. If your battery has not been replaced in 3 – 4 years consider a replacement as battery failures often occur with no warning. Cooling system Your vehicle’s cooling system is vital to the operation of your vehicle. Driving at freeway speeds and hot summer days put a lot of stress on your vehicle’s cooling system. Basic checks can assist in maintaining your vehicle’s cooling system. Only inspect your cooling system when the engine is cold. Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Brakes Brakes are a vital component of your vehicle. Poor brake performance and condition can result in substantially longer braking distances potentially placing you and your passengers in danger. Squealing brakes, grinding on your rotors or unusual vibrations may indicate your brakes need replacing. Another sign of worn brakes is poor brake performance. Ensure that your vehicle’s brake fluid is full. Always use the recommended brake fluid for you vehicle, this can be found in your owner’s manual. Always consult your owner’s manual or contact your local auto service. Courtesy of RAC website www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

she would lay giant snail baits along highways to get them out of the way. But my mum had it all wrong. Caravanners are not smug road hogs who delight in holding up scores of vehicles behind them or who deliberately cause traffic chaos in the middle of towns. In fact, a caravanner is someone who has a lot on his or her mind, especially as an unfamiliar town is approached. Do we want a coffee stop here, where can I stop, do I want a wee, where are the blue street signs pointing to public toilets, do I want fuel, where is the nearest

servo (somehow it’s never on the exit road from town), why has the GPS put us on the truck bypass, will the van negotiate the next tight roundabout, why is there nowhere to park with a van, will I end up in a narrow cul-de-sac with nowhere to turn? So, with ballooning bladder, darting eyes, sweaty palms and too many signs to read, a van driver can easily lose it. Calm. I must be calm. Think peaceful thoughts. Mistfilled meadows. Waterfalls. Flowers waving in the breeze. Politicians rendered mute. Ahh.

Peace, love and brown rice, as they say. Sadly, by the time I am focussed and relaxed enough for strategic thinking, we are already on the other side of town, fuel tank near empty, heading in the wrong direction, and the GPS and co-driver shouting at me to do a U-turn. Ever notice how vans congregate in unremarkable side streets of country towns, around roadhouses and in out-of-theway van parks? They’re the dispossessed, the downtrodden, the refugees of the road, looking for temporary sanctuary...or maybe just

I WAS born in 1933 so I remember the WW2 years. I have just returned from France and will share things with you. There is a computer connection. I lived in a little town close to Bletchley Park where the code breakers were operating. We had people from there billeted with us, including a ‘White’ Russian (as apposed to ‘Red’ communist). They were involved in SPYING!!. After the war I retained an interest in computing (and spying) although I did not think of it as that. To come back to now. Visiting to the Normandy Beaches, the subterfuge involved, and the connection with the Horsa Glider, the wings of which were made in my hometown. It has been 70 years but the many memories are there. That computer connection, I have been a programmer, I am now surrounded with my iMacs, iPad, iPhone and iMac Pro and so those early years have connected me with

great technology. What will be the next big thing? To find out join the computer club! The computer club is located in the South Tweed Sports Club 4 Minjungbal Drive South Tweed in a great air conditioned environment. Assistance is offered to people wishing to obtain their first computer with courses from absolute beginners to the more advanced. The tutors work on a voluntary basis and get fulfilment from passing on their knowledge to help others using the PC’s and Apple Mac Computers. People can join at any time but if they require more direct information they can attend the next “sign on” day on Friday 31 October 2014 at 11:00am to 1:00pm. community news Gourmet Meals – “Healthy Eating Made Easy” GOURMET Meals is an Australian owned and operated company based on the Gold Coast. The company, which first opened its doors in 1993, manufactures quality, ready-made frozen meals. Recognising that there is a growing demand for quality, ready-made frozen meals that not only taste like real home-style cooking, but are also nutritionally balanced, the owners of Gourmet Meals seized the opportunity to fill this hole in the market and offer a product that fulfils these needs. ‘We love the delicious home-style meals, it’s so convenient and it’s a great way to keep your portions under control’ – J Evans, Brisbane Gourmet Meals differentiates itself from other companies not only with its great tasting meals, but also with its friendly personalized service of home delivery combined with assistance in unpacking the order

Another point of difference is the fact that many of our meals are gluten free which is a healthier alternative for all of us, plus a welcome solution for Coeliacs and those people who are gluten intolerant. The delivery service spans from Northern NSW through to the Gold Coast, Brisbane suburbs, Ipswich, Caboolture and Bribie Island. Deliveries are made to each suburb once a week, with a courier service available should an alternate day be required. There are no contracts, only a minimum order of $45 for a delivery. For first time customers we offer a special incentive of two “free” meals. The website www.gourmetmeals.com.au gives extra information on the nutritional analysis of each meal, different ordering procedures, payment methods, heating instructions and delivery days. A full listing of all pick-up locations for Gourmet Meals can also be found on the site. Gourmet Meals offers main courses, side dishes, soups and desserts. The meals come in large and small sizes, are nutritionally balanced and portion controlled. Most are salt and fat reduced, high in fibre, protein, and gluten free. A welcome boost to pensions will soon help pensioners keep up with rises in cost of living expenses. Single age pensioners will gain an extra $11.50 a fortnight after the September indexation figures were announced. Couples on pensions will get up to $17.40 a fortnight extra. Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews said Australia’s 3.7 mil-

lion pensioners are getting their second pension increase this year, after an earlier increase in March. “This means total pension payments for people on the maximum rate will be $854.30 a fortnight for singles, and $1288 a fortnight for couples,” Mr Andrews said. This will start on 20th September 2014.

It’s a breeze to have the squeeze

WITH October being breast cancer awareness month, the message from the local breast screening service is simple. Now is a great time for women to take action to look after their breast health by booking their free breastscreen if they are overdue or yet to have this health check done. It’s quick, easy and free! B r e a s t S c r e e n Queensland Health Promotion Officer, Julia Foreman, understands it is easy for women to put off having this life saving test when trying to juggle everyday life. “Many women tell us it how difficult it can be to find time for their breastscreen due to work and other commitments,” Julia said. “To make it easier for women to squeeze an appointment into their busy

schedules, we’ve added extra Saturday appointments during October, in addition to our regular after-hours appointments.” “A breastscreen is an xray of the breast used to find breast cancers early, before they can been seen

or felt. The visit takes around 15 minutes. The procedure, described by many as ‘a breeze’, is only a few seconds of discomfort for most,” she said. Women aged between 50 and 74 are strongly recommended to have a

breastscreen every two years. Women are eligible to attend this free service from the age of 40. Services are located at Helensvale, Southport and West Burleigh. For an appointment phone 13 20 50.

The Power of the Second Question Chris Skellett Popular psychologist Chris Skellett reveals how you can pause in your busy life to reflect and capture the ‘simple truths’ about your world. In doing so, Chris says, we can reconnect with the deeper meaning of our lives and rediscover our sense of purpose. Each chapter suggests ideas, gives examples and reviews the importance of personal insight and celebrating life’s ‘aha’ moments. This book sets out clearly and simply how we can make our lives better and happier, by taking stock of what life has taught us. An invaluable resource for anyone questioning their current life path and wanting to make changes, The Power of the Second Question encourages us to lift our thinking horizon, disengage our lives from autopilot and live with renewed purpose and focus. - Exisle RRP $29.99

Electric Bikes Brisbane is in its second year of trading and Samantha says the bikes sold so far have saved nearly I million km in car and public transport. New bicycle technology has a motor and an electric battery that provide up to 250 watts of extra power to a rider’s own pedal power. “So what is often a hard, hilly ride around Brisbane is transformed into one that is fun and relatively easy,” says Samantha. “With rising fuel and public transport costs, more and more people are using electric bikes. Students, young couples, families and seniors are replacing short car trips with their electric bikes. “The extra power means that carrying things is a lot easier, and people love the feeling of cruising up what used to be a difficult hill, and of course parking them is so much

easier, too.” Electric bikes are legally classified as a bicycle; there is no need to register them or carry a license to ride them, which makes them a popular choice for drivers who have lost their license. Greg Yeowart loves bike riding, but recent respiratory problems and knee trouble kept him “out of the saddle” – that is until the Electric Bike rolled up. “The electric bike is just magic – I can do a lot with it and go anywhere,” said Greg who worked in project management in the mining industry. “I’ve always ridden bikes and now I can pedal to my heart’s content. And when the road gets challenging the electric assistance cuts in and it’s a breeze.” Samantha and Nick make full use of their own product. “We often ride down from our home at Wights Mountain, 20 km from the

Kiwi Invention reaching Aussie Seniors THE New Zealand invention which is a boon to arthritis sufferers in NZ was launched in Australia in July. It is already helping people here manage not only arthritis but diabetes, Parkinson’s, aching legs, sore feet and aiding stroke rehabilitation. It is a great circulation booster, helps relieve joint and muscle pain, strengthen leg muscles to help support and protect joints and improve balance and mobility. Night cramps and swollen ankles are relieved. It’s useful for anyone on diuretics to help get rid of accumulated fluid. The Australian distributor, Tess Rowley, a well known author of children’s books, is excited about her new venture. She has already visited some retirement villages and is available to speak to groups and demonstrate the Aircycle. Tess can be contacted on 0412 329 450 or by emailing aircycle.au@gmail.com The Aircycle keeps you moving while you watch TV, chat on the phone, or sit at your office desk. It’s simple to use and relaxing. If kept by a comfortable chair and used several times a day, results are quickly noticeable. The exercises not only work foot, knee and hip joints but also move the lower back and core muscles. By placing the Aircycle on the knee, fingers, wrists and shoulders can be exercised too. It is soothing and relaxing for arthritic fingers, OOS and carpel tunnel problems. The Aircycle has a lifetime guarantee and is used or demonstrated by arthritis and diabetes educators, podiatrists, physiotherapists and some hospitals in NZ. It is washable and folds up to pop in your pocket to take anywhere with you. It’s great for using in the car or on long flights for boosting circulation and avoiding ankle swelling. More information and direct orders : Call 0412 329 450 or visit www.aircycle.co.nz. For mail orders see advert on page 21.

When I purchase sheets or lightweight blankets, I save the zippered plastic bags (smaller sizes) they came in. I use them to help organize my suitcase, putting underclothing in one, shirts in another, etc. It’s especially helpful on those trips where I have to repack every few days. Elizabeth J. WE flew into Johannesburg hired a car and took off north to ‘The Lost City’. Africa’s kingdom of pleasure, an exciting and amazing leisure resort, with two international standard golf courses and accommodation ranging from The Palace, a seven star resort hotel to motel accommodation supported by a casino and a 6000 seat super bowl which has hosted the Miss World pageant and many of the world’s top entertainers. The whole set in the wild African countryside. The dining was first class. If you visit, take an interest in how they produce your poached eggs. There is a game reserve next door which houses primarily elephants among a whole range of animals. The whole is something not to be missed; about an 2.5 hours drive north of Johannesburg. The road east out of the city is an ‘A’ standard highway down to Durban in Natal, on the way we took off to the right into Drakensberg Mountains - Fantastic mountains tinted pink and purple by the African sun, with quality accommodation, excellent mountain panoramas and interesting walks with a surprising vista at each turn. We then continued down to Durban the capital of Natal where, for those interested in shopping they have created the largest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere. North of Durban is the location of three game reservesUmfolozi, Skukuza and Mkuze. The latter was the smaller and more interesting from the game viewing standpoint. We

Hop on and stay on! ON an Asian Cruise earlier this year the ship spent a day in Shanghai. We decided to catch the Hop on Hop off Bus to see the sights, it was very cold so we opted for a closed in upstairs. There were 10 other passengers all Chinese sitting near us. We set off enjoying the ride, stopping several times, then about twenty minutes later we stopped and all 10 Chinese went downstairs and got off, we took no notice and continued to sit and sit, eventually we decided to go downstairs only to find the bus locked and the driver gone. There was no emergency button to open the doors only an axe to break a window, which we didn’t dare do, so we stood by the doors frantically waving at the numerous passersby who just waved back!! an old lady selling noodles thought it was hilarious and just laughed! After a while my husband decided to blow the horn to attract attention, luckily the driver had left the keys, he’d obviously gone to lunch or something so hoping for the best as everything was in Chinese in the cab he pressed the horn till a Chinese man, who lucky for us spoke English said he would go and look for the driver. Eventually they returned and after a heated discussion and much relief we were put on another bus and continued our tour some 30 minutes late. We’ll never forget our adventure in Shanghai. then drove up to S. Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and on to the Victoria Falls on the Zambezi, they are 1 km wide and 340 ft high, a whole lot of water pours over this in the wet season and the spray in the air is visible for 10 miles. The Africans call it ‘Mosi oa Tunya’ (the smoke that thunders). Naturally one must not fail to visit the Kruger Park game reserve, which has become one of the favorite weekend drives for people in Johannesburg and Pretoria. A visit to Cape Town is a must and for those who are energetic, a walk up Platteklip Gorge, which runs up the front of Table Mountain at an angle of about 45 degrees, but the cable car is a lot easier as the view is magnificent. THE THING ABOUT PRAGUE . . .

My stor y IN 2000 whilst on a private tour of China with my husband (car with driver and guide) we stopped at a small village in the far west of the country and when two little children saw us they screamed and ran to their grandparents. They had never seen white people before in their village. The grandparents bought them closer to us and with their encouragement they were happy to smile at us. What a difference to the Chinese children living in Australia, so modern and educated in the western ways and living standards. Margaret Telford

How I gave it all up for a new life in Europe’s most idiosyncratic city Rachael Weiss ALLEN & UNWIN $29.99

This is the story of a freewheeling Aussie girl who gives up her life in Sydney to return to Prague, her ancestral home, intending to live there for the rest of her life. In fact, she lasted there for three years before visa restrictions anddisillusionment caused her to leave the country. Even though she is at times exasperated by the petty bureaucracy andcustoms of a country that values beer and potatoes above everything else, and even though she is frustrated by herattempts to master a very difficult language (only spoken by 10 million people), her efforts to engage both socially andromantically with the locals are wonderfully funny. Social embarrassment and mortification rub shoulders with the kindof bureaucratic absurdity that inspired Kafka in former times. The Thing About Prague is a surprising and generous memoir full of warmth and Rachael’s unstoppable sociability.Rachael Weiss is the author of Me, Myself & Prague and co-author of When Will We Get There. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

Freak Street revisited

By

Phil

Hawkes

FORTY years ago. Kathmandu. Exotic, neurotic. Freak St., Durbar Square, Pie Alley. The Camp Hotel. Dylan and headbands. Hash candy and ganga pie. Embroidered Afghan sheepskin jackets. Battered VW vans arriving overland from Europe. The daily DC3 coming from Patna. And, to escape, the back of a truck bound for the Indian border, 8 hours away. Then, the travellers. Real travellers, genuine pioneers. “Hippy, hippy” cried the children. “Come my place, good stuff” insinuated the older ones. “Change money, good rate” muttered the shopkeepers. Through it all, the passing parade. Kennedy’s children. A time for changing the world; changing one’s self. Self discovery amongst a movable commune, caught between Est and yoga, between Erhard and Rajneesh. A remarkable town, a remarkable time. Thankfully, the fundamentals haven’t changed. But we have. The children of a different era. A time of designer jeans and Reeboks, of more assured minds and spirits, of Empowerment seminars. White water rafting and trekking and

Relive your travels in the 60s and 70s Swayambhunath Temple insurance policies. A GPS phone. The pursuit of style and a global identity; taking time out from an MBA. Not so much the naïve idealism of the Peace Corps, but the orchestrated business break. The certainty of getting back to it all; a computerised reservation. Kantipath giving way to a career path. The Grateful Dead transformed into the gracious living. But the moon still rises high over the Himalayas. Nagarkot still welcomes the first rays of daylight. And the temples continue to go about their ancient business, third eye watchful as ever. Kathmandu is still what you make of it, what you want it to be.

IT’S been said that if you remember the 60s then you weren’t there. But if you grew up in the 60s and 70s and were into backpacking, there is actually a whole lot to remember. We were creative and intrepid and we had virtually no money but we saw a lot of the world. Some of us went overland from London through Afghanistan to India and on to Australia. We slept on the beaches or café rooftops in Greece, or worked on a kibbutz in Israel. We came of age in the 60s and 70s; we were rebellious and restless, we hitchhiked or bought an old campervan and threw an extra pair of jeans in a backpack and just took off, usually with no real plans. We would love you to share your early travelling days with our readers. So send in your backpacking stories (limit 150 words) and photos of your early travels and relive those heady, magical days. Mail them to ‘Relive your travels’, Gold Coast Tweed Seniors Newspaper, PO Box 1062, Tewantin, Q 4565.

All Aboard! reserved seat awaits you THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination. Like the sound of the above ? The Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) is now in it’s 57th year of operating rail tours. Over 990 excursions operated by both steam and diesel hauled trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic tour in travel of a bygone era – travelling in style in the heritage carriages. The Glasshouse Mountains area comes alive with the sound of steam on Saturday 25th October - join the steam train from Brisbane to Mooloolah with time to

explore the three villages of Glasshouse, Landsborough and Mooloolah. Looking for an escape to the north? In November we are running a 5 day daylight rail tour from Brisbane to Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands. Heritage diesel 1620 will haul this special farewell tour to the Lander series air conditioned carriages which are being withdrawn from traffic later this year. What a great way to see Sunshine Route all the way from Brisbane to Cairns in daylight travel with overnight stops at Bundaberg, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. And of the course the Tablelander continues up the Kuranda Range – great views of country Queensland and coastal scenery from the wide window of an air conditioned train. Not only will Santa be celebrating the arrival of Christmas - the Australian Railway Historical Qld Divn will celebrate its 1000th tour in December so join Santa aboard the Christmas Excursion on Saturday 6th December. IN August Go See Touring held the inaugural Convict’s Cup Croquet Tournament on Norfolk Island. Croquet players from around Australia were invited to travel to the island for a week of croquet fun and have fun they did. The social tournament was a golf croquet match and players were paired ‘randomly’ with novice players being teamed up with those who were more experienced. In all 64 players participated in the event and a huge congratulations goes out to the winners Gordon Giles from Victoria Point in QLD and Nanette Meredith from Leongatha in VIC. The history of sports on the island goes back to the Second Settlement (1825 – 1856) when sports were played by the military and free settlers on the Kingston Oval. The field today is home to football and cricket matches and is the oldest pitch in the Southern hemisphere still in use. Norfolk Island doesn’t have

any croquet lawns as such so much preparation work was done to the Kingston Oval to make it suitable for the event. Our players came from as far South as Geelong and as far north as Bundaberg and as well as playing croquet our group had time to explore on their own, shop til they dropped and also enjoy BBQ’s, Island Fish Fries, Breakfast Bush Walks and more. Go See Touring plans to make the Convict’s Cup an annual event and the next tournament is planned for June 2015. Next year players from New Zealand are also invited. There are also plans in place for a week’s touring in New Zealand in November 2015 with the best sites of the South Island being combined with some social croquet activity with some of our Kiwi cousins. For more information on either tour give the friendly staff at Go See Touring a call on 1300 551 997 or check the details at www.goseetouring.com

‘I Love This Place’ film DVD giveaway THE film ‘I Love This Place’ will premiere from mid-October around Australia. As a ‘musical documentary’ the film is predominately targeted at our age group with its engaging rich visual imagery and bespoke musical score. It is a commentary free portrait of Director and lifelong resident, award winning Producer Steven Salgo’s ‘backyard’ - Sydney’s eastern suburbs coastline. Unlike so many who can’t wait to get away from it all, Salgo found that everything he needed was already on his doorstep. The evocative and entertaining film unfolds around a year; drawing an intimate portrait of the energy, the unexpected and the daily life of this piece of paradise. The region’s architecture and events as well as the degrading coastal environment are also highlighted. The power of the wind, rain and, of course, the sea, is integral to savouring the area’s innate glories and it’s easy to see why Steven Salgo ‘ loves this place.’ Steven is a fifty something award winning filmmaker with vast experience in film and television production. This is Steven’s passion project and he has invested a large majority of his superannuation into making this documentary over the last couple of years come to life! The film’s Ambassador is Costa Georgiadis, host of ABC’s Gardening Australia. We have one DVD to give away to a reader, so if you are unable to attend a screening, make sure you enter to win a copy of ‘I Love This Place’. To enter, write your name and a daytime contact telephone number on the back of an envelope and mail it to ‘I Love This Place’, Gold Coast Tweed Seniors Newspaper, PO Box 1062, Tewantin, Q 4565 to arrive by 27th October 2014. BRISBANE residents Susan Ryan (left) and Gail Masters couldn’t have chosen a better time for a day out at the Gold Coast. Not realising that the yearly Swell Sculpture Festival was in full swing, they happened on it by chance and glad they did, enjoying the selection of unique artwork spread for a kilometre along Currumbin Beach. Finding a shady spot for a picnic lunch proved to be more of a challenge but resilience mixed with good humour saved the day.

Disability Support Workers Michaela Kloeckner and Jenny Davis, along with a team of volunteers, were mentors on the project. John was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) 22-years ago. John says, “I used to be a landscaper, enjoying the earth and the way plants worked together to create lovely features. These days I live for my grandkids, two girls. We

go out together, mostly shopping. They call me ‘Poppy’ and I’m always putting my hand in my pocket, but that’s what I love. When I’m not with them I am reading or scooting about town on my scooter or out in one of the lovely parks on the Gold Coast with Nerang Respite’s community access mob, or in the NCRCA centre mucking around with clay. My exhibit, Time Matters, represents my hope of more time with the ones I love.”
