Volunteering goes hand-in-hand with Rosies VOLUNTEERS around Australia who go the extra mile to help those in need are celebrated during National Volunteers Week, 12-18 May. A wonderful example is Rosies on the Gold Coast. Everyone is welcome at Rosies, whether in need of food, a sleeping bag or swag or just a cuppa and a chat with friendly volunteers. It’s been 27 years since ‘Rosies – Friends on the Street’ first began changing the lives of marginalised and disadvantaged Queenslanders, particularly those living on the streets. Today Rosies spans from the Gold Coast to Cairns and west to Toowoomba. An estimated 1,370 homeless are helped each week through outreach services supported by some 850 volunteers state-wide on a day-to-day basis. Rosies coPatrons are Leneen Forde AC, Chancellor of Griffith University and 22nd Governor of Queensland, and His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd). On the Gold Coast, Rosies Drop-In Centre is located on the corner of Hicks and Davenport Streets, Southport, in the lower-ground floor corner of the Mal Burke Car Park. Open Monday to Friday 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., $2 lunches are served daily between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with food boxes available for $10, $20 or $30. This year Volunteering Australia considers what it means to be a volunteer and reflect on the ‘best bits’ of the last 25 years. Volunteers have a power in today’s society and a drive that enables them to make a true difference in the world – can you imagine what it would be like without them? We invite you to consider this as you celebrate the volunteers powering

your community. This NVW, go the extra mile to say ‘thank you’. Volunteering Australia joins in the celebrations by providing the 25th Anniversary Lapel Pins. For further information about the 25th Anniversary Lapel Pins contact Volunteering Australia on (02) 6251 4060 or order online at: www.volunteeringaustralia.org Volunteering Australia thanks everyone taking part in NVW 2014. The power of volunteers starts with a single step, giving us the strength to walk for miles … together.

Queensland Police Service celebrates 150 years THIS year marks the 150th anniversary of the Queensland Police Service, which came into being in 1864.To celebrate the anniversary, the QPS is holding events throughout 2014, and has published a commemorative book and calendar. Volunteering goes hand-in-hand with Rosies Continued from Page 1 Street vans serving mostly hot drinks and ‘cuppa soups’ are accessible in Southport at varying times Monday through Saturday and tea and coffee are served from a room at Southport Courthouse when court is in session. Once a week Rosies volunteers visit inmates at Numinbah Correctional Centre as well. Rosies offers ‘unconditional acceptance and friendship’ and ‘aims to provide practical support to some of the most abandoned people in our society. Rosies is non-preaching and non-discriminatory.’ According to volunteer Denise, the cupboards were bare at the not-forprofit Rosies not long ago but thanks to the broadcasting efforts of radio station Hot Tomato, public generosity ensured that larder shelves were stocked once again, at least for a while. Anyone wishing to donate tinned or dried foods, sleeping bags or funds towards the cost of $147 swags for the homeless is welcome to drop in to Rosies during open hours or to contact co-ordinator Wendy on 0400 474 992. With winter on its way, Rosies would be grateful too for donations of blankets, scarves, beanies and gloves.

Governments get a big “F” for employing older workers

GOVERNMENTS, both federal and state, lag well behind the private sector when it comes to employing older workers, a new report reveals. Using ABS and Census data, the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre report - Past, present and future of mature age labour force participation in Australia - highlights variations in rates of ageing and mature age par-

ticipation across the country. An interesting finding is a marked decline in the proportion of people aged 60 and over employed by governments. For example, around 16.4% of men aged 50 to 59 work across national, state and local bureaucracies, but this falls to 12.7% for men in their 60s. Women drop from 24.2% in their 50s to 20.1%. Conversely, private sector employment

actually increases as people age. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the findings were surprising considering Treasurer Joe Hockey’s recent emphasis on the costs of population ageing. “Government threats to raise the pension age, when they don’t employ older workers themselves, are a bit rich,” O’Neill said. “The public service should represent the gold standard in hiring and retaining mature age staff. Instead, public servants aged over 60 are a rare breed across the country. “When it comes to employing senior Australians, governments, both federal and state, get a big ‘F’.” The report concludes that an ageing workforce underscores the importance of addressing the barriers to mature age employment from age limits on workers compensation to discriminatory recruitment practices. “Unless governments lead by example and stamp out age discrimination, Australia’s mature age participation rates will continue to lag behind

those of other OECD countries,” he said. In 2012, 14% of the population was aged 65 and over. This is projected to increase to 20% in 2042. The proportional decline in the “working age” population (15 to 64) may result in wage inflation and lower productivity. Earlier research conducted for the Human Rights Commission indicates that just a 5% increase in paid employment of Australians aged 55plus would add $48 billion to the economy annually. Commission of Audit: Seniors left in the lurch

OLDER Australians will be shocked by many of the recommendations contained in the Commission of Audit in the areas of health care, pensions and aged care, says leading seniors advocate COTA Australia. Chief Executive Ian Yates said older people are the major users of Australia’s health care system, so introducing copayments for GP visits, emergency departments and medicines will mean basic health care is compromised for many seniors, and this will be counterproductive to containing health care costs. “In the lead up to the last election COTA asked older people what issues they were most concerned about,” Mr Yates said. “First up was access to health services with quality, affordability and availability their main concerns. “If the Commission of Audit recommendations are adopted, many older people will be badly out of pocket, or they will not go to their GP to have their health issues diagnosed. They will consequently get sicker and end up in expensive hospital care with more limited life expectancy. “Putting barriers in the way of people looking after their health at the cheaper end of the health System – a visit to the GP or getting the medicine they need – will only end up putting more pressure on the system at the more expensive end – surgery and hospital admissions. “In addition, locking higher income earners out of Medicare and charging others high copayments even for emergency care sets Australia up for the likes of an American health care sys-

tem which is one of the most expensive in the world and with poor outcomes – totally unsustainable over the longer term. Mr Yates said he was also disappointed about suggested changes to aged care, which while picking up the Productivity Commission’s 2011 recommendations on inclusion of the family home in the assets test for care, ignores the key Productivity Commission tradeoff for that removing rationing of aged care and opening up aged care to market forces. “It’s mystifying that the Commission wants to charge people more for aged care but not allow them access to it,” Mr Yates said. Mr Yates again welcomed the Prime Minister’s commitment to keep his election promise on the age pension and not make changes in this term of government. “The Commission of Audit recommends many conflicting changes to the age pension, but it does at least acknowledge the need for a more comprehensive look at the ageing population and retirement. “This needs to happen before any changes are made to the pension – including looking at superannuation concessions which the Commission stunningly completely ignores. Higher income earners, like the Commissioners all benefit enormously by superannuation concessions, while most pensioners receive little or no benefit. “It’s time for a truly independent and fair review of retirement incomes,” Mr Yates said. community news Mother’s Day: what does it really mean? A WOMAN without children and who never married honoured her mother at a memorial service in West Virginia, USA, in 1908, at what is recognised as the first official observance of Mother’s Day. Anna Marie Jarvis, who died aged 84 in 1948, was the daughter of Ann Reeve Jarvis, who by the time she was 26 was the mother of 11 children. Mother’s Day began to take root in 1858, when Ann Jarvis created working groups of mothers to deal with health and sanitation issues in her community. These groups of mothers continued to work for the greater good, even through the American Civil War during which they cared for wounded soldiers from both sides of the conflict. On May 10, 1908, three years after her mother’s death, Anna Marie held a memorial ceremony to honour her mother and all

mothers at Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, marking the first official observance on Mother’s Day. In the following years, she campaigned to make ‘Mother’s Day’ a recognised holiday. But by the 1920s, Anna had become soured by the commecialisation of the holiday. She incorporated herself as the Mother’s Day International Association, trademarked the phrases ‘second Sunday in May’ and ‘Mother’s

Day’, and was once arrested for disturbing the peace. She and her sister Ellsinore spent their family inheritance campaigning against what the holiday had become. Both died in poverty. So on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14, we should contemplate the origins of this day, a day that was first celebrated without buying gifts or greeting cards. That was never the point. Think of Anna Jarvis as the figurative Mother of Humanity. She was, for all humanity, what all mothers want for their own children. They wanted peace, they wanted their children to be healthy, safe, educated and cared for. They wanted their children not to die fighting stupid wars. They wanted their children to remember that even when dogma-fueled wars do divide us, our humanity unites us. They wanted us to care for each other.

My Mummy can do anything! My Mum knows a lot. A whole lot! My Mother doesn’t really know quite everything. Naturally, Mother doesn’t know that, either. Mother? She’s so old fashioned. Mothers are so out of date! Well, Mum might know a little bit about it. Before we decide, let’s get Mum’s opinion. Wonder what Mum would think about it? Wish I could talk it over with Mum.

Are grandkids too much of a good thing? CARING for grandkids one day a week keeps grandmothers mentally sharp, but extending it to five days has negative effects, an Australian study has found. “We know that older women who are socially engaged have better cognitive function and a lower risk of developing dementia later, but too much of a good thing just might be bad,” said Margery Gass executive director of the North American Menopause Society which published the results last month. Researchers from the Queensland University of Technology conducted three tests on 186 Australian women, aged 57 to 68, noting whether they also thought their own children had been particularly demanding of them in the last year. Among the 120 grandmothers, those who spent one day a week taking care of grandchildren performed best on two of the three tests. But those taking care of grandchildren for five or more days a week did significantly worse on the test which assessed working memory and mental processing speed. However, the researchers also found that the more time grandmothers spent taking care of the grandchildren, the more they felt that their children had been demanding of them, leading them to specu-

late that perhaps mood played a role in the unexpected result. Although other research has looked at the relationship between

mental sharpness and being socially engaged, this is the first time that this type of research has looked at grandparenting.

DrGass said that since postmenopausal women played such a big role in caring for grandchildren, knowing its effect on their future health was vital.

Do you want to know how to store your vegetables in your fridge, so that they stay fresh for two to four weeks or more? It’s so simple, and it will save you lots of money like I have! Recently I came across a product called “Super Fresh Bags”. These bags store food in the fridge for freshness and longevity. I’m sure most of us Villagers waste fruit and vegetables because they “go off” before we get to use them up completely. Well, this need not happen anymore and the proof is in the pudding. Prior to Christmas I put various items in these bags to test. On returning from holidays some three weeks later, all of my vegetables were as I left Roslyn Roberts of Hammond Village, Coombabah, QLD them in the refrigerator – fresh and ready to eat. In fact, I now have had some spring onions stored for over six weeks and they are still fresh. My personal experience with these bags has been nothing short of fantastic and for what it is worth I want to share this with you. The bags pay for themselves in no time. And the best part is the bags are washable and reusable over and over again. I have been using my bags for over 12 months now and they are still going strong. You will find that these bags have a myriad of uses and it is just a matter of experimenting. The bags have a very minimal cost and are posted free all over Australia. Go on line and visit www.superfreshbags.com.au for more information or to make a purchase or if you don’t have access to a computer call

Seniors Enquiry Line more than a phone service UNITINGCARE Community’s Seniors Enquiry Line is more than simply an information and referral phone service. Funded by the Queensland Government, the statewide service has access to a wide range of publications and forms which can be posted to interested seniors. “There are a number of useful publications available which can assist seniors to access concessions, retirement accommodation, financial and legal assistance and information on government services,” Seniors Enquiry Line Coordinator Julie Argeros said. “Booklets can also be forwarded to seniors which explain how UnitingCare Community’s Elder Abuse Prevention Line and Time for Grandparents programs can provide services to older Queenslanders to increase their wellbeing and sense of security while at the same time strengthening ties within the community,” Ms Argeros said. Publications and booklets available through the Seniors Enquiry Line include: Protecting Yourself Online – What Everyone

Needs to know: An Australian Government publication designed to help keep Australians safe and secure when online (www.staysmartonline.gov. au) NPS MedicineWise: Information on who to contact when you suspect your medicine may be causing you a problem or if you have a question about your medicine (www.nps.org.au) Now That’s Living: A comprehensive publication of accommodation, services, support and lifestyle options in Queensland, including a retirement directory (www.qld.lasa.asn.au). “Seniors Enquiry Line staff can also post out applications and forms to seniors who may not have access to the internet to be able to print them out,” Ms Argeros said. “For the cost of a local call, Queensland seniors, their family or carers can talk to a real person to obtain applications for the taxi subsidy scheme or other government concessions, rebates and subsidies should you be eligible.” For further information, call the Seniors Enquiry Line on 1300 135 500. The service operates Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.

ASHBY garden is open to the public on Saturday 7 June and Sunday 8 June from 10am until 4.30pm. In early 2013 a massive storm hit and there were trees down everywhere necessitating a huge clean-up. The house and garden thankfully was relatively unscathed but it took several weeks to make things shipshape again. You will find many conifers, Japanese Maples, Magnolias and Camellias. In recent years, perennials, particularly Salvias have been planted, originating in Mexico and SE Africa and many of them flower in winter. This is a bonus for brightening the cool garden. Open Gardens Australia welcomes you to visit this lovely garden at 55Freemont Drive, North Tamborine. Cost: $7 per person.

community news Have a cuppa to help fight cancer IT’S almost that time of year again when Cancer Council Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events are held across the nation in a bid to fund the fight against cancer. Most of us have participated in this, the largest fundraising event of Cancer Council Australia, in some way over the past 21 years. Some of Australia’s best loved foodies, including Janelle Bloom, Gary Mehigan and Barry du Bois are proud to make their cups count this May and have created healthy and delicious

morning tea recipes to get mouths watering, inspire our hero hosts and help raise funds for Cancer Council. So if you’ve ever dreamed of baking like your favourite chef, now’s your chance with a smorgasbord of healthy treats including Gary Mehigan’s mozarella bruschetta, Janelle Bloom’s

mushroom tart, Darren Robertson’s pear & ricotta muffins, Justin North’s lemon iced tea and Anna Gare’s overnight healthy muffins. Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea ambassadors will join over a million Australians on May 22nd to make their

cuppa count. This year Cancer Council aims to recruit 36,000 generous morning tea hosts to raise over $13million. Funds raised support Cancer Council’s lifesaving work into prevention programs, world class research and support services (like the Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20) for all people affected by

cancer. Across Australia, communities and homes will join the celebrations, raising funds to help beat cancer. To register, visit www.biggestmorningtea. com.au or call 1300 65 65 85 to receive your free Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea host kit today.

Visitors pay respects at Cavill Park Cenotaph

Pictured at the Cavill Park Cenotaph are Clive Pincott, Judi Pincott (centre) and Patricia Brenton

THE Anzac Day Commemoration Service had come to an end for another year and the crowd had moved on when Clive and Judi Pincott of Christchurch, NZ, and

sister-in-law Patricia Brenton of Laurieton, NSW took the opportunity to reflect at the Cavill Park Cenotaph next to the Surfers Paradise RSL. The three visitors to

Queensland had chosen to meet on the Gold Coast for a holiday together (a very good choice they all agreed) and included the central Surfers Anzac Day parade and Service to pay their respects. As it turned out, Anzac Day is a particularly poignant time for Patricia as her father, Thomas Abbotts, died while marching in an Anzac Day parade in Newcastle 64 years ago. Patricia, who has family in Banora Point, said that she found the noontime Service ‘moving’ and the voices of the Gold Coast City Choir, led in song throughout the ceremony by director Ruth Gurner, as ‘beautiful, simply beautiful’.

community news Improving palliative care access in aged care MANAGERS of aged care services and facilities are being asked to participate in a new survey that aims to map the provision of palliative care and ad-

vance care planning services around Australia, in what has been described as a ‘first’ for the sector. Dr Yvonne Luxford, Palliative Care Australia chief

executive, says the survey aims to improve end of life care for older Australians. The online survey, conducted by a consortium

of leading national health, aged care and academic organisations, is part of a $15 million federal government project working to improve access to palliative care and advance care planning services in the aged care sector nationally. Dr Luxford says the survey seeks to capture the knowledge of aged care professionals, as well as GPs and specialist palliative care services, so that an accurate picture of services currently available can be obtained. “About 60,000 people die each year in the care of residential and community aged care services, so it’s clear that palliative care and advance care planning are core business for the aged care sector,” Dr Luxford says. “This survey will help to identify gaps in service delivery that need to be targeted so those working in aged care can be better supported to improve

palliative and end of life care for older Australians.”Findings from the survey will be incorporated into a national environmental scan of the sector, with the information used to develop a suite of programs funded through the Specialist Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning Advisory Services Project. Other initiatives include a 24 hour hotline for GPs and aged care providers to call for specialist palliative care and advance care planning advice, as well as education, training and web-based resources for health and aged care professionals to enhance their skills in palliative care and advance care planning. The consortium appointed to implement the Advisory Services Project comprises Respecting Patient Choices, Palliative Care Australia, CareSearch, the Univer-

Changes to Aged Care from 1st July 2014 FROM 1 July 2014, the distinction between high-level and low-level care will be removed, giving everyone the choice to pay their accommodation costs as a lump sum, a daily payment amount or a combination of both. You will also be able to select extra services for an additional daily fee in participating facilities. Importantly, the current income-tested care fee, which is based on assessable income, will be replaced with a means-tested care fee, which will be based on assessable income and assets. For many, this will mean ongoing care fees will be higher if entering an aged care facility on or after 1 July 2014. From that date you will be able to choose to pay a refundable accommodation deposit, a daily accommodation payment amount, or a combination of both. All facilities will be able to offer extra services for an additional daily fee. You will be required to pay a basic daily care fee. If you’re not receiving the full Age Pension, you will

generally be required to pay an additional daily fee based on your level of income and assets. Importantly, those already in aged care can continue with their current arrangements unless they leave care and re-enter after a period of 28 days, or if they change facilities and decide to re-enter

under the new rules. If you enter aged care on or after 1 July 2014, the value of your assets, which may include your home, will be used in the calculation of your ongoing care fees. If you decide to keep your home, it is important that your accommodation costs are structured

correctly in order to continue to receive favourable Centrelink treatment. For over 50% of people, it can take more than a month after receiving an aged care assessment to enter a subsidised residential aged care facility, so it may be best to act sooner rather than later.

Retirement community offers incentives to move! NEW incentives announced by award winning retirement community De Paul Manor Estate will give Tweed Heads and Gold Coast Seniors plenty of reasons to smile. The incentives apply to selected new two bedroom apartments for sale at the Ashmore community. Sales consultant Sue Benseman said, “We are encouraging all interested parties to enquire about how they can save up to $77,000 off the list price on selected new apartments. An example is our fabulous ground floor Style 2 apartment, complete with modern kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study nook,

originally priced at $457,000 is now selling at $380,000.” “To assist with making the move easier we’re also offering $1,000 to help with the cost of furniture removal and three months’ fees absolutely free, valued at $1,500,” she said. One couple already living the life at De Paul Manor Estate are Don and Shirley Pettiford who downsized to better suit their lifestyle opportunities. From the Pettiford’s point of view, they found the transition from their home of 30 years in Toowoomba to community living in Ashmore to be less stressful than anticipated.

“I welcomed the absence of yard, garden and building maintenance and concentrated on gaining a level of fitness, relaxing and generally enjoying the amazing facilities. There are daily social activities and you choose which ones you want to join-there’s no pressure,” said Don. “We have also found that our overall cost of living which now includes the General Services and monthly charges, has decreased by approximately 20%.” The low maintenance, easy living apartments feature high ceilings, a private balcony, quality appointments and fittings such as split system air-conditioning,

stone bench tops, glass splash-backs and 24-hour emergency alert service as standard features. Residents at the pet friendly community also enjoy 24-hour security, a dedicated on-site management team, pay no stamp duty and have the peace of mind of priority access to the De Paul Villa Aged Care facility located next-door. To find out more about how you can make the move to De Paul Manor Estate and phone Sue on 1300 732 306.

Retirees identify living cost discounts A MAJOR issue facing all Australians is the never ending escalation in living costs. This is of particular concern to Gold Coast retirees who do not receive the benefit of a regularly increasing income to offset escalating costs. There are now many instances of retirees canceling household insurance or medical insurance or unable to afford some of the small luxuries in life due to constant rises in costs. The Gold Coast Branch of Australians in Retirement is in the process of addressing this issue. At it’s last Baby Boomers meeting, members discussed all items of expenditure incurred by retirees. Such items as groceries, rates, electricity, vehicle running and health insurance were discussed with members providing details of how they are able to obtain seniors discounts or

cheaper packages. Through this interactive sharing of information and ideas the branch is now compiling a list of all retirees expenditure items and a range of sources for cost reduction. The process of compiling this list continued at the branch’s Baby Boomers meeting on 7th May. The very comprehensive list will be made available to members for them to use as a resource in reviewing their own living costs and potential discounts available to them. For further information please contact Rob Grover at robgrover@hotmail.com or 0417 732 242. Australians in Retirement is the business name for The Association of Independent Retirees, the peak body representing the interests of retirees who are self -funded or in receipt of a part pension.

She knows her job inside and out and I really look up to her.” Leigh’s outstanding management skills were recognised by the Retirement Village Association two years ago, when she was awarded Queensland Manager of the Year. ”Whilst it was a lovely acknowledgement, my residents’ wellbeing and happiness are my real reward,” Mrs Bradley

Creek Week. Nerang Riverkeepers, together with Gold Coast Catchment Association, are hosting the tree planting day to celebrate South East Queensland’s waterways. To register, contact Gold Coast Catchment Association: info@goldcoastcatchments.org and 0423 846 494. The date again is Saturday May 24 between 8 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. or until 10,000 trees are planted. Location is Country Paradise Parklands, 231 Beaudesert-Nerang Rd, Nerang. Cost is free. All equipment will be provided and everyone is welcome. SPOTTED at Palazzo Versace enjoying High Tea with good friends was Maggie Brown of Runaway Bay. The occasion, a surprise organised by daughter Katherine, was in celebration of Maggie’s 70th birthday. When the comment was made that ‘70’ must be the new ‘50’, and the question asked how she remained so youthful, the good-natured Maggie, always with a twinkle in her eye, offered the sage advice: ‘Drink lots of water.’ Happy belated 70th birthday Maggie!

Breakthrough drug stops Alzheimer’s A NEW drug that stops the devastating symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease is being developed by scientists. Early trials have shown it holds back memory loss, confusion and the inability to carry out daily tasks for three years. At present, the small number of drugs available can only treat the symptoms and “buy patients time”, slowing down the decline by up to six months. But patients who have been given the new jab every two weeks for the last three years have not suffered any further progression in their symptoms. Alzheimer’s is caused when deposits called amyloid proteins form in the brain. The new vaccine, called IVIG, works in a completely different way to other drugs by teaching the immune system to target these deposits so they cannot increase. Campaigners believe it could be available within the next ten years. Professor Clive Ballard, director of research at

the Alzheimer’s Society in the UK, said: ‘This is probably the most exciting drug [for Alzheimer’s] we know about that is currently in the late stages of research. “We now know it is safe but the real test will be whether these initial promising results can be replicated in larger groups. One in three people over 65 will develop dementia. “While finding a cure is the Holy Grail of dementia research, it is also vital that we continue to fund studies like this if we are to develop more treatments to help people to live well with the condition.” Scientists also hope that if the patients in the trial continue to be given the jab, it will halt their symptoms for several more years. The manufacturers must now carry out tests on hundreds more patients, which may take several years. Scientists will then look at the results of these ‘phase three’ trials to check the vaccine is effective and

safe. IVIG – short for intravenous immunoglobin – has so far only been given to patients in the early stages of the illness, but scientists hope it will also be effective for those who have had the disease for a number of years. It is not designed to treat other forms of dementia.

PEOPLE with diabetes are more likely to develop serious foot problems because the condition may lead to reduced blood flow to the feet, which makes cuts and abrasions slow to heal. Diabetes can also causedamaged nerves in the foot, which result in a reduced ability to feel minor trauma. As well as checking their feet daily for cuts, blisters, bruises or signs of injury, which they may not have felt happening, they should have at least an annual foot check-up with a podiatrist. Seek advice or treatment from a podiatrist before trying to manage foot problems (such as corns, calluses or ingrown nails) by yourself. Good foot care

can help people with diabetes to avoid foot problems. Take care of your feet, get regular check-ups from your doctor or podiatrist and act quickly if you have a problem. The nerves to your feet are the most likely to be affected by diabetes. Damaged nerves (neuropathy) can cause painful, numb or insensitive feet. Minor cuts, blisters or burns may not be felt and ulcers can develop, which you may not be aware of. Some people with neuropathy experience uncomfortable sensations such as burning, tingling and pain. This is often worse at night. It is important to remember that many people with nerve damage have no

symptoms and are unaware of the problem. Nevertheless, they are still at risk of developing ulcers. Foot care amongst diabetics is incredibly important as foot ulcers affect as many as one out of 10 people with diabetes. Even small ulcers on the foot can represent a serious risk as they may heal extremely slowly and need rigorous treatment to cure.In turn, ulcers can develop into serious lower body infections. The presence of high blood glucose levels over a long period of time may result in damage to the body and to bodily functions. Although it is uncertain how this process works, amongst diabetics it is relatively frequent. A condition called diabetic neuropathy sometimes occurs over time, usually affecting the sensory nerves in the legs. If your nervous system is even slightly damaged, the extremities of the body can become numb. For this reason, you may not be able to feel foot problems until they have developed. It is most

important to ensure you have regular foot examinations. Diabetic neuropathy can gradually occur without the patient realising and, as such, the loss of protective sensation puts them at risk of developing increased pressures underneath the feet that can cause ulceration and in some severe cases where infection and gangrene is present, amputation. The

blood supply to the feet can also be affected along with an increased tendency to develop foot deformities due to an imbalance between the foot and lower leg muscles. These complications represent a significant risk to patients with diabetes mellitus and their health and quality of life in general. If you are at risk, check in with your doctor or podiatrist soon.

Spending time online may ward off depression among live-alone retirees

A new study shows that the Internet offers retirees a chance to overcome the social and spatial boundaries that are believed to fuel depression

SPENDING time online has the potential to ward off depression among retirees, particularly among those who live alone, according to new research The researchers, based in the US, report that Internet use reduced the probability of a depressed state by 33% among their study sample. Late-life depression affects between five and 10 million Americans age 50 and older. This new study shows that the Internet offers retirees a chance to overcome the social and spatial boundaries that are believed to fuel depression. The research was conducted by Dr Shelia R. Cotten of Michigan State University; Dr George

Ford of the Phoenix Centre for Advanced Legal and Economic Public Policy Studies; Dr Sherry Ford of the University of Montevallo; and Dr Tim Hale of the Centre for Connected Health and Harvard Medical School. “Retired persons are a population of interest, particularly because one mechanism by which Internet use may affect depression is to counter the effects of isolation and loneliness, which are more common among older adults,” the authors said. “Also, working individuals may be required to use the Internet rather than choosing to, and may use the technology for different reasons than those not working.”

The data were obtained from four waves of the health and retirement study, a longitudinal survey collecting information from more than 22,000 older Americans every two years. The current study sample included 3075 community-dwelling respondents observed over four waves of data, from 2002 to 2008, yielding a total of 12,300 observations. The measurement of Internet use was based on a question asking participants, “Do you regularly use the World Wide Web, or the Internet, for sending and receiving email or for any other purpose?” Depression was measured using an epidemiologic studies depression scale. With other factors constant, the authors found that Internet users had an average predicted probability of depression of .07, whereas that probability for nonusers was .105. Based on the difference, Internet use led to a 33% reduction in the probability of depression. “The number of people in the household partially mediates this relationship, with the reduction in depression largest for people living alone,” the authors wrote. “This provides some evidence that the mechanism linking Internet use to depression is the remediation of social isolation and loneliness. Encouraging older adults to use the Internet may help decrease isolation, loneliness, and depression.”

Popularity of cruising continues P&O first introduced passenger services in 1844 and was the forerunner of modern cruise holidays. It’s early voyages were the first of their kind, and have led to P&O Cruises being recognized as the world’s oldest cruise line. P&O subsequently became the first company to operate passenger routes to Australia from 1932. These voyages became the cruise holidays that are so popular today with the specialist Australian service becoming known as P&O Cruises Australia. It’s fleet has certainly come a long way since the days of the old Fairstar. The Pacific Dawn for instance underwent a multi-million dollar refurbishment before it was relaunched in 2007 as the Pacific Dawn. It is the only ship in the P & O Fleet to feature an all white hull which was done to celebrate the 75th anniversary of P & O Australia. It is 245 Metres long and caters for 1900 passengers. The Fairstar, which was a converted Troop Ship, was 188 metres long and at the end of its career catered for 1280 passengers. Passengers aboard the Pacific Dawn and its sister ships enjoy a level of comfort little known to the clientele of The Fairstar. The major entertainment on the Fairstar was the moonlight disco while these days passengers have entertainment that ranges from Circuses to Astronomy as well as Production Shows, Theme Nights and even a Sit Down Comedy Club. P&O Australia currently operate a fleet of three vessels permanently in Australian Waters; The Pacific Pearl, The Pacific Jewell and the Pacific Dawn. The Fairstar was enormously popular and its final voyage in January 1997 was sold out in a few hours. The popularity of cruising continues today. Little wonder they need three ships to serve the Australian Cruising Public’s ever growing demand for Cruise holidays.

Come with the train buffs THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination. Like the sound of the above ? The Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) has now entered iti 57th year of operating rail

tours. Over 980 excursions operated by both steam and diesel hauled trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic tour in travel of a bygone era , travelling in style in the heritage carriages. Join us for a mystery day out by ICE train on Saturday June 21st. We don’t tell you where we are going but head off to a country destination and have lunch at an historic old pub before returning to the City mid afternoon. Nambour Garden Expo is the destination in July. The train steams through the scenic Glasshouse Mountains, past pineapple fields, and the lush

Sunshine Coast Hinterland enroute to Nambour for the large garden event. There is also the option of staying on the train and continue to the interesting little village of Yandina. In August come and escape with us on a two day tour by special rail motor to Stanthorpe and Wallangarra to celebrate the end of winter. There is great scenery across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt region and there is no better way to see it then from the comfort of the heritage rail motor. To book or order a brochure phone our office on 3252 1759 between 10am and 3.00pm Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A recorded message operates at other times.

Air transport tips GET tech savvy (if you don’t know how your kids will help you). Check with your airline to determine if there are options for web, kiosk or mobile phone check-in to save time when you arrive at the airport. If you have any items that you are unsure about, check with your airline prior to arriving at the airport so that you can avoid any unnecessary surprises or delays while check-

ing in for your flight. Ensure that all personal toiletry items such as liquids, aerosols and gels are packaged in containers with a capacity of 100 ml/100 grams (3.4 oz) or less. You are responsible for making sure that you have the proper identification and travel documentation for yourself and your children as required by the country of destination.

Transportation: One of their favourite ways to bundle transportation and lodging together is to take ‘repositioning’ cruises. Twice a year, cruise lines relocate their ships as the seasons change and sell cheap one-way fares to passengers who want

countries for several weeks at a time. And their first destination in any new city is always the grocery store. If they do eat out, it’s usually for lunch, a much less expensive meal. Health care: Since Medicare doesn’t cover overseas health expenses, Lynne and Tim have an international catastrophic health care policy. It’s not much, but it ensures they can be transported home if they become too ill for travel. For more common health needs like dental check-

to come along for the ride. The Martins recently travelled from the US to Europe for $2000 – not exactly ideal if you have to book a flight home as soon as you land, but for Lynne and Tim, it’s an economical way to get from point A to point B while enjoying all the amenities a cruise has to offer. Often they travel from the US to Europe this way. “When you consider what airfare costs, we’re getting transportation there, plus 12 or 14 days of food and housing,” Lynne says. On the ground, they stick to public transportation whenever possible and use CarRentals.com when wheels are necessary. The site lets them search for rental agencies in most countries and compare prices in one place. Lodging: With a housing budget of around $2400 a month, they don’t have room for pricey hotels. They use Homeaway.com and VRBO.com to rent apartments, condos and sometimes houses. To stretch their dollar and have time to settle in to new places, they stay in

ups, they pay out of pocket. “Health care in other countries is remarkably good,” she says. “If you get sick in Paris, lucky you.” The time table: Tim usually handles nitty gritty trip-planning duties, but they’re careful to leave room in their schedule. “We try to plan six months ahead because I’m old and I need to know where I’m going,” Tim says. “When we first started, we tried planning a year ahead and I thought that lacked a little flexibility.” Currency: Credit is king with the Martins. They take advantage of their airline-specific credit cards for free checked baggage perks and otherwise use credit cards that earn points for travel and don’t charge foreign exchange fees. The end of the road: With the benefit of good health on their side, the Martins say they’ll continue travelling as long as their bodies allow it. But they purposefully leave their principal retirements savings untouched as a form of security for when they do finally need to slow down. May 2014 - Gold Coast Seniors - Page 33

THERE’S no doubt that Naples gets a mixed press. It would be too easy to read some reviews and reschedule your itinerary to bypass the city and head straight for the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii or indeed anywhere else. Reports of pickpockets, mafia, littered streets, dodgy vendors and taxi touts are not unknown. Conversely, you’ll find rave reviews of the food, the history, the palaces and monuments, the Parkers Hotel

museums and churches ... and the people. For the Neapolitans, life is to be lived to the fullest. And you’re invited to go along for the ride. From the balcony of our lodgings, the palatial Grand Hotel Parker’s, we begin to understand the contradiction that’s the city of Naples. There’s the beauty of the harbour, the bay shimmering at dusk, the lights reflecting off lowslung clouds. Closer beneath us, the chaos of the streets, the bee-like buzz of humanity, the senses awakened with culinary anticipation. How could anyone not be in love with this taste of the real Italy, the one we see in movies or read about in a marvellous book called “Naples – A Way Of Love”. In the morning it’s off downtown to meet Walter the tour guide, whom Marco the concierge has arranged for us. The old, historic part of the city teems with life in narrow alleys where Vespas come hurtling toward you and veer at the last moment, keeping the adrenalin pumping. There is so much to see and experience that 3 hours is hardly enough ... medieval churches, old palaces, an underground labyrinth, even a museum of purgatory; and to satisfy true believers, rows and rows

of stalls selling religious objects and elaborate nativity scenes. For lunch, we indulge in slabs of cheese and fresh bread from a local deli, eaten on the steps of a cathedral where we watch people and they watch us. It’s a favourite pastime, and everyone wants to talk to you especially if they know you’re Australian. Every single person in Naples has relatives in Australia and they all seem to be called Giovanni or Maria. Of course we know them all. We spend hours roaming the alleys and the squares, following our guide or guide book, grabbing a gelato and taking it all in. But at the end of the day, there’s “Parker’s” as it’s known, and the prospect of a splendid dinner on the terrace, or a takeaway from the nearby pizzeria. Washed down, of course, with something very Italian indeed. Naples is a city that absolutely demands a return visit, to enjoy life in a way that seemingly only Neapolitans know, but are more than willing to share. And when it comes to hotels, you’d be well advised to discard any thoughts of budget lodgings because, frankly, the 5 star experience will be well worth it. www.comune.napoli.it www.slh.com

Great holidays combine independent travel with local knowledge THE freedom and choice of travelling independently is sometimes offset by missing out on a major attraction. This can be due to lack of knowledge about a region and less than thorough research before you leave. With so much information on the internet travellers are spoilt for choice, and trawling through airfare sites and accommodation options can lead to information overload. Of course, you can’t always see everything on a holiday visit, so start by creating a must see and do list, but try and add a little spare time into your itinerary as well. If you have never visited a place before, settle in to your chosen accommodation and see if they have a street map with your address marked on it. Head for the tourist information centre and ask a local what makes the place special and what is really worth seeing. It may be that the view of the area from a nearby hill is more worthwhile than another art gallery or fountain in the centre of the town.

Elderly drivers are safe drivers, but a regular refresher course is a good idea A TASMANIAN retiree is standing up for the competence of older drivers. Graeme Barwick, who is branch president of the Northern Tasmanian Association of Independent Retirees, has been a driver for almost 60 years and says driving ability depends on the individual, not the age. He has spoken out after a road toll report claimed older drivers made up the most driving fatalities in 2013. Last year, 37 people died on Tasmanian roads, including 13 people aged over 64. Their ages ranged from 65, with the eldest a driver and a pedestrian, both aged 96. There were also drivers aged 82 and 92 who died. However, the report said older people were less likely to be in serious injury crashes, with people aged over 64 making up 18.1% of the 250 serious injuries reported last year. Mr Barwick said there were drivers from every age group who could benefit from a refresher course. “It’s a controversial subject,’’ Mr Barwick said. “There are definitely some older people who need a refresher course, but the vast majority are quite capable and careful drivers and never have an accident. “So, too, some middle-aged people could do refresher courses and definitely some younger groups, when you see the way they drive and ignore the signals. “`But I wouldn’t target the older drivers alone; they are safer drivers.’’ Mr Barwick, 76, said he knew people www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

in their 90s who were safe drivers. He said he was a confident driver and drove thousands of kilometres during a multi-country overseas trip in 2008. Meanwhile, the RACQ’s Years Ahead program is assisting older motorists to drive safely for longer, making them aware of their own capabilities. It covers topics such as changes to the Queensland road rules; medical considerations when driving; and alternative transport options (such as motorised wheelchairs).’ Contact the RACQ on 13 1905. Drivers who are 75 years or older, as well as drivers with medical conditions that affect their ability to drive, are required to obtain a medical certificate from their medical practitioner in order to continue driving. An ‘M’ will be shown on the licence as a condition. The driver must carry the medical certificate at all times when driving and produce it to police if required. Failure to carry a medical certificate could incur a fine. For both older drivers and drivers with a medical condition, doctors can suggest the limitations or conditions on a driver’s licence. While doctors and health professionals may be able to assess an older driver’s medical fitness to drive, it is not necessarily possible to evaluate a driver’s ability to interact with the road environment unless being assessed while driving. The doctor may suggest a formal driving assessment be carried out to evaluate a person’s ability to drive safely. May 2014 - Gold Coast Seniors - Page 37

Every day is a ‘treasure’ with Peter James at the Currumbin RSL!

Peter James

THE Currumbin RSL believe they’ve hit the jackpot after securing monthly performances by one of Queensland’s true entertainers. The RSL’s first ‘Treasure Day with Peter James’ will be held on Monday 26 May, and based on the show’s popularity, the Club is expecting upwards of 400 people to attend! “Peter James has a huge following across Queensland and Australia, and we are expecting his monthly ‘Treasure Day’ to be hugely popular with both our members and guests,” said Currumbin RSL Marketing Manager, Stacey Panozzo. “When Peter walked through our club

a couple of months ago, so many of our members stopped him to say hello and ask if he’d be preforming here,” she said. According to the man himself, the success of the show comes down to two things – the concept and the quality of performers. “The initial concept came after I pulled all of the best parts out of many different television game shows and combined them into one great stage show,” said Peter. “Now Treasure Day is almost four hours of nonstop live entertainment, audience participation, games, raffles, prizes and lots of fun. The band, The Hip Replacements, is superb and the guest performers are always quality, international entertainers,” Peter said. “The people I entertain for are a fun bunch. There is nothing out there like this show for the older generation and that’s why people keep regularly attending.” After a lifetime in show

business, Peter should know what his audience likes. He is only a couple of months off 70, and is the second oldest member of The Hip Replacements. The first Treasure Day with Peter James on Monday 26 May with showcase The Lions Den, a sensational male harmony trio who will feature songs from legendary male Doo-Wop groups, including The Platters,

Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, the Bee Gees and The Beatles. Treasure Day with Peter James at the Currumbin RSL on Monday May 26 from 11am to 2:30pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. For more information, go to the Currumbin RSL website at www.currumbinrsl.com.au or call the Club on (07) 5534 7999.

weave their exotic tale through Arabian Nights, a program of orchestral music. Arabian Nights will be held at the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra Centre, Community Drive, Ashmore on Sunday 27 July at 2.30pm. The venue will be transformed into an Arabian tent in the desert complete with rugs, cushions and woven baskets while the greatest story ever told, Scheherazade by Rimsky Korsakov, entrances the audience. Composers, especially those in the 1800’s, began exploring the exotic east, following the silk trail through Persia and travelling to Morrocco and darkest Africa. The new sounds delighted them and a wealth of orchestral music was created. The orchestra will also perform In a Persian Market by Ketelby, Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances which features the melody now famous as Strangers in Paradise, Arabian Dances by both Grieg and Tchaikovsky, SaintSaens’ Bacchanale from

Samson and Delilah, music from the film Lawrence of Arabia and more. Concertmaster, Margaret McAteer will lead the orchestra in a new work for the orchestra, Armenian Rhapsody, which will feature solo violin. The audience and musicians will enjoy a warm winter’s afternoon of orchestral wonders and a luscious afternoon tea all included in the ticket price. Thank you Queensland! I WOULD like to extend a sincere thank you to all who helped make this year’s World’s Greatest Shave such a success. The World’s Greatest Shave is the Leukaemia Foundation’s major annual fundraising event. It enables us to continue to provide free worldclass support services to blood cancer patients and their families as well as fund medical research. This year thousands of brave participants shaved, cut, coloured or waxed their hair to help raise over $16 million nationally. We are well on our way to reaching our $5 million goal set for Queensland. Each day the lives of six Queenslanders are turned upside down with the di-

The Leukaemia Foundation is there to provide patients with the practical assistance and emotional support they need during this difficult time. We are truly appreciative of the many participants, sponsors and volunteers who supported our work by being involved in the World’s Greatest Shave. community news Classical didgeridoo artist to play at Yugambeh Mobo on the Gold Coast

Performing at Yugambeh Mobo .. William Barton, of Australia’s finest didgeridoo players.

ONE of Australia’s finest didgeridoo players will be a big attraction at the Yugambeh Mobo event at Somerset College at Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast on June 1. William Barton, 33, was born at Mount Isa and learned to play from his uncle, an elder of the Wannyi, Lardil and Kalkadunga tribes of western Queensland. William is widely recognised as a leading didgeridoo player in the classical world. “I’m doing what I love,” William says. “I want to take the oldest culture in the world and blend it with Europe’s rich musical legacy.” The Yugambeh Mobo event is organised by the

Yugambeh Museum, Language and Heritage Research Centre at Beenleigh, which records and promotes the traditional knowledge of the region, especially the Yugambeh language, which was spoken throughout southeast Queensland. The museum also assists Aboriginal youth with employment and training opportunities, and helps community members trace their own family stories. Yugambeh Mobo means ‘yugambeh tomorrow’ and acknowledges the history of its past. It was officially launched at Somerset College in December 2013 and has grown from a one-day event into an all-inclusive campaign. Driven by the Yugambeh Museum, but owned by the southeast Queensland community, this journey invites all to participate and celebrate “the cultural uniqueness of our home”. Paula Nihôt, healthy communities coordinator, Parks and Recreational Services, Gold Coast City Council, writes the Yugambeh Garden component, highlighting local plants that can be used in everyday cooking. She told Seniors Newspaper that William Barton also plays the guitar and is backed by a symphony orchestra. “I heard a four-minute prelude which was amazing,” she said. Paula invites readers to follow the campaign on facebook www.facebook.com/yugambehmobo Contact the Yugambeh Museum on (07) 3807 6155 or Somerset College on (07) 5559 7167.
