THE 25th of April was officially named ANZAC Day in 1916. It was marked by a wide variety of ceremonies and services in Australia, a march through London, and a sports day in the Australian camp in Egypt. In London over 2,000 Australian and New Zealand troops marched through the streets. A London newspaper headline dubbed them “the knights of Gallipoli”. Marches were held all over Australia; in the Sydney march, convoys of cars carried wounded soldiers from Gallipoli attended by nurses. For the remaining years of the war, ANZAC Day was used as an occasion for patriotic rallies and re-

cruiting campaigns, and parades of serving members of the AIF were held in most cities. During the 1920s ANZAC Day became established as a national day of commemoration for the 60,000 Australians who had died during the war. In 1927, for the first time every state observed some form of public holiday on ANZAC Day. By the mid1930s, all the rituals we now associate with the day – dawn vigils, marches, memorial services, reunions, two-up games – were firmly established as part of ANZAC Day culture. With the coming of the Second World War, ANZAC Day also served to commemorate the lives of Aus-

tralians who died in that war. In subsequent years the meaning of the day has been further broadened to include Australians killed in all the military operations in which Australia has been involved. ANZAC Day was first commemorated at the Memorial in 1942. There were government orders prohibiting large public gatherings in case of a Japanese air attack, so it was a small occasion, with neither a march nor a memorial service. Since then, ANZAC Day has been commemorated at the Memorial every year. Australians recognise 25 April as an occasion of national remembrance, a day when we reflect on the many different meanings of war.

By Jo Marsh LAST December, Gold Coast resident Doug was gearing up for a big family Christmas. He’d bought the presents and plenty of Christmas food, and was looking forward to his family visiting. The 76-year-old pensioner’s plans were thrown into

chaos when his refrigerator broke down. After checking his bank balance he was resigned to the fact that he could only afford the smallest of fridges. Then he found out about Good Shepherd Microfinance’s No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) which is available through Seeds of Hope

organisation at Carrara. Manager of Seeds of Hope NILS Janice Cotterill said they were able to help Doug replace his refrigerator with the help of a NILS loan and a government subsidy. “We managed to get Doug a nice, big refrigerator just in time for Christmas,” she said. NILS is run nationally from more than 600 locations in partnership with c o m m u n i t y organisations, National Australia Bank, federal and state governments. Loans of up to $1200 can be provided for essential household items such as refrigerators, washing machines, beds etc, as well as car registration or repairs, health aids or education costs. The government subsidy is known as the Home Energy Saver Scheme (HESS)and is available for products that meet a minimum energy star rating, such as fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers and dish washers. Home owners can also apply to purchase air conditioners and solar hot water systems.

Ms Cotterill said HESS is a welcome addition to NILS. “It is going to help our clients purchase good quality, energy efficient items and this is going to result in significant energy savings for people in our community,” she said. “Many families in our area are experiencing pressure from the increasing cost of electricity, and we know that energy expenses form a large part of household bills. Under the HESS program, energy-efficient appliances will be more affordable for NILS clients and in the long term this will help cut household energy expenses.” These HESS subsidies are only available until June 30, 2014. To be eligible for NILS and HESS residents need to hold a pension card or health care card and be of genuinely lowincome. To find out more about No Interest Loans and HESS, phone 5559 1302. Get to know your street GETTING to know your neighbours can help build a friendly, safe community and help is now available to make organising a street event even easier. Acting Mayor Donna Gates said the City of Gold Coast won a national award and was sharing the success with residents. “Thanks to an Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Award and $5000 in prize money, we will distribute small grants to residents and groups to help fund the costs of local meet our street events,” Cr Gates said.

Not-for-profit groups can apply for up to $500 and local residents can apply for $100 in vouchers. “It’s a casual, low-cost way to meet your neighbours and creates a sense of community where people look out for each other. “These events are truly grassroots, we’re just offering some financial help, a kit to download and your street does the rest,” she said. National Seniors defends health card

NATIONAL Seniors has defended the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) after reports that the Commission of Audit may be considering changing the eligibility rules for the card. The CSHC grants low income self-funded retirees access to cheaper medicines; state, territory and local government concessions; and a Seniors Supplement for rates and utilities. The Coalition promised to index the CSHC income limits during the 2013 election campaign. CSHC income limits are $50,000 for singles and $80,000 for couples. These have not risen since 2001. These limits do not include “tax free” income such as superannuation. However it has been revealed that the Commission of Audit is now looking at redefining

income to include superannuation income which will leave some self-funded retirees ineligible for the card. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said seniors were already feeling anxious about any changes to the CSHC. “Seniors expect the government to honour its CSHC indexation election commitment – just as the government insists on honouring the Future of Financial Advice (FOFA) amendments to financial advisers and $20 million marriage counselling voucher scheme to the Christian lobby,’’ he said. “Beyond that, any changes to the health care card recommended by the Commission of Audit must be debated and considered in the context of all changes across the board.” Media release: National Seniors

Labrador Memorial Senior Citizens YOGA sessions are held on Monday at 8.15am and Wednesday at 8.30am. Both sessions go for an hour and a half. Indoor bowls is played Monday from 10.00am and Thursday from 12.30pm. New players are welcome to join in this fun and social activity. No prior experience necessary. We have 6 Table Tennis tables which are well used during our four afternoons of play on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The ever popular 500, Canasta and Rummy are played on Tuesday and Thursday. Hand and Foot (card game) is played on Monday, Tuesday, and on Thursday in the morning and afternoon. and Foot played several times during the week, as wsell as Rummy. NEW research out of the United States shows loneliness may be a risk factor for early death and a bigger killer than obesity. University of Chicago neuroscientist and psychologist John Cacioppoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s report titled Loneliness: Human Nature and the Need for Social Connections, found being lonely isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t only about being unhappy; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also unsafe and bad for our health. Loneliness may be a risk factor for early death and a bigger killer than obesity. A BRONZE plaque commemorating Australian servicemen declared missing in action during the 1950 to 1953 Korean War was recently presented to the Surfers Paradise RSL SubBranch at 9 Beach Road during a moving dedication ceremony. Over 17,000 Australian sailors, soldiers and airmen served in the Korean War as part of the multinational force defending South Korea from Communist North Korea. Of the 340 Australian servicemen killed during the Korean War, 43 were classified as missing in action and presumed dead. The plaque, donated by Somerville Funerals, honors the 43 who remain on the battlefields of North Korea or in what is now the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) between North

AN increasing influx of retirees and demand for new technologies will help fuel Queensland’s next jobs growth surge, says a new report by Deloitte Access Economics. The Deloitte research identifies the ‘25 sectoral hotspots’ with the biggest potential to lift Australia’s prosperity over the next 20 years. And the outlook is bright for Queensland. The attraction of the Sunshine State as a retirement destination is predicted to drive jobs growth in residential aged care, retire-

ment living, community care and education services related to re-skilling an ageing workforce. An estimated 15,000 retirees – or more than 40 every day – move from interstate to Queensland each year. Deloitte says it has also identified emerging sectors in Queensland that have the potential to sell into rapidly expanding world markets, and to meet global demand for clean energy. New technologies may open up the largely untapped potential of Queensland’s coastline to

provide new opportunities for ocean resources, both in terms of aquaculture and the future development of renewable energy through the power of wind and waves, the report says. Deloitte Queensland managing partner John Greig said there was “a great deal of potential” for Queensland across a range of industries. “Queensland has strengths not just in its resources and its sun and surf, but also in its ability to attract retirees, while new technologies have the potential to reinvigorate prospects in thermal coal and to open up new opportunities off our vast coastline,” Mr Greig said. Report co-author Chris Richardson said Queensland was a “magnet for retirees”, which presented strong business opportunities. “The story is better for Queensland because the aged go to Queensland – so you’ve got a bunch of old people getting older and needing healthcare. “That’s rolled gold as far as business opportunities go, not just its size, but its certainty.”

Textured shoe insoles a ‘positive’ step A $120,000 Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Research Australia grant will enable UQ School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences physiotherapy lecturer, Dr Anna Hatton, to examine the potential of an inexpensive insole to improve the mobility of people with MS. Dr Hatton says many people with MS have problems with walking, which make day to day activities difficult and often lead to falls. She says walking problems in MS could result from a combination of typical symptoms related to muscles, nerves and senses. “The key to improving mobility is to use a range of different treatment techniques which address each of these symptoms,” Dr Hatton says. “Improving walking ability is of primary importance to maintaining health, independence and quality of life for people living with MS.” Dr Hatton and her international research team (spanning Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom) will investigate whether a specially designed insole which enhances sensory information at the feet could boost the

walking ability of people affected by MS. They will analyse how about 180 people with MS walk over different surfaces after wearing the insoles for three months. “We will explore whether wearing the insoles changes the way the body moves or the leg and trunk muscles work during walking,” Dr Hatton said. “We will also monitor any changes in the perception of foot sensation and the awareness of foot position, to help better understand how the insoles may bring about their effects on walking.” The research builds on studies by Dr Hatton and the team over the past eight years on the effects of textured shoe insoles on walking and balance in older adults prone to falling, people with Parkinson’s disease and preliminary studies with MS. Dr Hatton’s funding was awarded as part of MS Research Australia’s 2014 grant round of $1.537 million Australia wide. ‘THE most famous rooms in Australian art’ are now open to the public after Her Excellency the Honourable Quentin Bryce AC CVO, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia officially opened the Margaret Olley Art Centre (MOAC) at Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah on March 15. Approximately 800 VIPs and guests gathered to celebrate the life, legacy and works of Margaret Olley, one of Australia’s most loved artists who died in 2011 aged 88. The Governor-General, in her last official engagement outside Canberra before her tenure in the role came to an end, told the ceremony that MOAC was a unique project which entrenched Tweed Regional Gallery as the home of ‘the most famous rooms in Australian art’. The Governor-General said regional galleries played an important role in Australia and Tweed Regional Gallery was one of the best. The MOAC, already affectionately dubbed ‘Olleywood’, has been con-

structed as an extension of Tweed Regional Gallery and includes re-creations of three of the rooms in Olley’s famous Sydney home, including the Hat Factory and the Yellow Room where Olley spent many hours painting. Murwillumbah residents, former Deputy Prime Minister Doug Anthony and his wife Margot, donated the original piece of land that houses the Tweed Regional Gallery and now the Olley wing. According to Tweed Mayor, Councillor Barry Longland, the $4 million project, including $1 million bequeathed by Olley, was an investment to create a national and international attraction that would provide social and economic benefit for Tweed residents for many years to come. Approximately 21,000 items were relocated from Margaret Olley’s Paddington home to create a precise reproduction at MOAC, which will also house a significant number of Olley’s paintings.

community news ANZAC Day at Currumbin - one of Australia’s largest and most impressive tributes

ANZAC Day is the day on which Australian citizens remember their fellow Australians who currently and past serve and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its qualities of courage, mateship and sacrifice continues to have meaning and relevance for our national identity. RSL Clubs around Australia keep the Spirit of ANZAC alive by providing services that enable commemoration by members of the general public. Currumbin RSL’s iconic ANZAC Remembrance will again this year be held at Elephant Rock on Currumbin Beach. In the lead up to the Centenary of ANZAC in 2015 this year’s event will have some very significant inclusions. The event, on 25 April, is

televised nationally by Channel 7’s Sunrise program and viewed by hundreds of thousands of Australians unable to attend a service. Elephant Rock’s backdrop is chosen for similarities to Gallipoli’s foreshore and the service is a touching collage of ceremony. Co-ordinator of the event, the Currumbin RSL Group, takes great pride in the event being the largest regional ANZAC event in Australia. Mr Ron Workman OAM, President of the Club and the driving force behind the Dawn Service for almost 20 years, says “Involvement in this event means a lot to me. This service continues to be one of Australia’s most impressive tributes.” “I’ve loved watching it evolve over time and grow into the major event it is today.” He said. This year’s program fea-

tures include honouring of indigenous servicemen, new footage including Afghanistan, guest presenters and a tribute to animal heroes. community news Constance Ackroyd Trust and RSL Care to provide accommodation support for veterans in need THE Constance Ackroyd Trust, managed by Perpetual has awarded RSL Care a grant worth $120,000 over three years to provide updated accommodation to financially disadvantaged veterans. The Constance Ackroyd Trust was established by the late Professor Joyce Speed in memory of her mother. RSL Care will receive $40,000 a year over a three year period with the funding used to renovate four RSL Care independent living units, which will be leased to financially disadvantaged veterans at a concessional rate. The trustees for The Constance Ackroyd Trust are Perpetual,

who are leaders in philanthropic fund management and Jennifer Callaghan. RSL Care CEO Mr Craig Mills said RSL Care was delighted to have been selected for the funding. “We are so pleased Perpetual has successfully matched RSL Care with a trust that was looking for a good project to support,” he said. “The activities undertaken with the grant funds will assist RSL Care to provide a wonderful living environment for our veterans who given so much serving the nation. “The upgraded units will make a significant change to deserving veterans by providing a modern, bright, clean

A well-known local identity, Jim Yuke was born in 1931 in Beaudesert. Growing up in Southport, the traditional land of his maternal grandmother Jenny

Graham, Jim attended Southport Primary School but left early to start work as a milk boy in Surfers Paradise. In later life he worked as a dredge operator, snake wrangler, flenser, railway worker and business owner with his brother Bill. Mrs Yuke said hosting the event was about remembering Jim in a way he would have loved: celebrating the stories and characters of Southport. ‘Jim loved spending time on the water and had “a close call” over the Southport Bar on more than one occasion. His final request was to have his ashes scattered over the ocean,’ she said. The Southport Community Centre was filled with friends and community members who shared the special occasion with the Yuke family.

the Renewable Energy Target in relation to providing financial support for the installation of home solar power systems. Currently, the RET provides up to $3,450 subsidy on a 5kW solar power system. A solar panel system of this size is large enough to wipe out the power bills of an average Australian household. If the RET is gutted, it would not only seriously impact on the

affordability of systems; but also on solar jobs throughout Australia. Earlier this year it was estimated if the RET was abolished, up to 6,750 solar PV jobs could be lost and foregone nationwide in less than 5 years. The Australian Solar Council says if the Renewable Energy Target is left unchanged, it could deliver 700 megawatts of big solar in Western Australia; creating 7,000 con-

struction jobs by 2020. The Australian Solar Council says it has been in discussions with key political parties to determine their support for maintaining the existing RET. “The future of the Renewable Energy Target will be a key issue in the WA Senate election. From our questions to candidates, householders will know which candidates commit (to) help them reduce their power bills.”

IN March, Burleigh Ladies Probus Club members travelled north to Woodford where, despite the much needed rain they enjoyed a visit to Strathgordon Clydesdales. We were privileged to hand feed both the giant Clydesdales and their tiny cousins the Shetland ponies and learn more about these ancient breeds of horses. Afterwards, lunch was taken at the nearby historic Woodford hotel. A great day was had by all. The Club meets at 10.30a.m on the third Wednesday of the month at the Burleigh Heads SLSC, Gold Coast Highway, with a guest speaker and lunch. New day dawns for The Gardens On Lindfield THE Gardens on Lindfield was acquired in January this year by Australia’s largest operator and developer of senior living communities, Lend Lease, and residents are already reaping the rewards of having such an experienced owner at the helm. The first of several refurbishment and development projects that will transform the village is a significant upgrade to the bowling green, including a new surface and a new barbecue and storage area. Lend Lease Village Manager, Leigh Bradley said The Gardens on Lindfield bowling team, made up of 40 residents, had been bowled over by the support they have received from the village’s new owners. “Lend Lease’s mammoth upgrade to the bowling green will see the entire boundary of the green replaced with new tiling. The drainage system will also be given a complete overhaul.”

Ms Bradley has considerable experience overseeing such projects, having managed similar refurbishments at her former post at Carlyle Gardens Townsville. “We’re virtually starting from scratch here but the village team and the residents are all delighted to have the support of Lend Lease to transform our green into a top class sporting facility,” she said. The new surface – a needle punch carpet - is expected to arrive from a UK manufacturer in June. Meanwhile Ms Bradley is busy coordinating the logistics for an easy installation and speedy fit-out of the recreational area surrounding the green. Adjacent to the bowling green, the Australian flag flies proudly above the village. On Anzac Day it will provide the backdrop for a celebration commemorating the dedicated men and women who served in World War I.

For The Gardens on Lindfield resident Jake O’Donnell, this year marks his seventh Anzac Day in the village. From 1968 to 1970, Mr O’Donnell served in Vietnam with the Australian Army Training Team, in combat with South Vietnamese troops in remote parts of the country. “I think it’s extremely important that we continue to remember the soldiers who served before us,” Mr O’Donnell said. “Helping to arrange the village’s Anzac Day service is my way of acknowledging the sacrifices

made by so many courageous men and women a century ago.” The Gardens On Lindfield will host a service at 6am officiated by resident Bram Lang, a former Royal Australian Air Force Officer who served in World War II. The formalities will be followed by a breakfast hosted by the village’s management team. and strong.’ The occasion was International Women’s Day 2014 as celebrated by the Coolangatta Tweed VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) Club at South Tweed Sports. Organised by the dedicated Penny Thorpe and a hard-working committee, the Hon. Justine Elliot MP formally opened proceedings while respect-

fully acknowledging the Elders of the Traditional Owners of the land. Kathie Diskin, VIEW Zone Councillor, provided an overview of International Women’s Day. Guest speakers, asked to recount their personal journeys through life, were Professor Colleen Cartwright, Foundation Professor of Aged Services, Southern Cross University; Pam Moore, an OAM recipient for services to the community through the Country Women’s Association (CWA), and Georga Pringle, a Year 12 student at Mt St Patrick’s College, Murwillumbah. The dynamic Professor Cartwright, now 70 and with an ‘I don’t think so’ attitude toward retirement, shared a captivating tale of leaving school at 15; marrying young and having a family before returning for further education when ‘a door’ opened

unexpectedly for her. Years later, at 61, Colleen Cartwright was awarded her PhD and today has extensive teaching and research experience in ageing, ethics and medical decisions at end of life. Pam Moore OAM, in a strong yet gentle manner, shared her amazing story as a woman on the land. Pam, a wife and mother, was not only involved in the CWA at Branch, Group and State levels but has also been active in other committees and councils including Rural Doctors’ Network and Rural Women’s Network and, more recently, the Commonwealth Gene Technology Community Consultative Council. Representing the younger generation, Georga Pringle confidently delivered an inspirational talk that commemorated women of the

Gold Coast wins national coastal award THE Gold Coast Ocean Beaches Strategy 2012-2022 was recognised in a prestigious coastal awards ceremony recently. The awards were announced at the Australian Coastal Councils Conference, held at Ballina on the New South Wales north coast on Tuesday 25 March. The Strategy sets the direction on maintaining and developing lifestyle and leisure opportunities, keeping our beaches clean and healthy, protecting our coastal infrastructure from erosions and other hazards, and the need for everyone, including different levels of government, to work together to look after our ocean beaches. Acting Mayor Donna Gates said the City was awarded the inaugural Australian Coastal Award for the Gold

IT might have only been a practice session in readiness for the Australian Surf Life Saving Titles in Scarborough, Western Australia but it was clear that these members of the Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park March Past Team were committed to this Surf Life Saving event, with well-deserved congratulations in order for a bronze medal win for Queensland in the recent State Titles held at Kirra. According to the Surf Life Saving Australia website, March Past is one of Surf Life Saving’s original events and represents the traditional discipline of a surf life-

saver. Teams march in time to music around a set course carrying a surf reel, line and belt and following their standard (flag) bearer. As well, teams march in formation following commands and are judged on factors such as timing, arm and leg swing, space and dressing, body carriage and presentation. The number one benign tumour in men IF you know someone or a loved one who is suffering from poor prostate health, you’re not alone, it’s a common problem and help is available. U3A members at a recent function

Our AGM was held on 17 March and the management committee for 2014/ 2015 elected. It is disappointing that, apart from the previous committee – who with one exception renominated – there were no nominations from other members of our organisation. We urge members to give some thought to becoming involved at some point in the future in the running of U3A Tweed Coast. After all even a committee has a use by date. Our classes continue to be popular and we are grateful to our group leaders who so willingly give up their time to run our courses. Popular demand encouraged us to start a “Beginners’ Cryptics” course. It was the intention to run this for just Term 1 and it has now concluded and an enthusiastic group of converts is now keen to put their

new-found skills into practice. The popularity of Mah Jong has prompted us offer a Beginners’ Mah Jong on Mondays in Kingscliff. Contact is Betty Everett (02) 6674 2759. We hold a forum on the first Friday of each month during the NSW school term. Recently we’ve been privileged to be addressed by two excellent speakers – John Fradgley spoke on legal matters at our March forum and on 4 April we welcomed Brendon Cox from NSW Fair Trading. Macular degeneration must be treated urgently to avoid irreversible loss of vision

MACULAR degeneration (AMD) is a debilitating eye disease that causes loss of central vision and we are seeing in increasing number of patients with this condition at the Eye Care Clinic in Coolangatta. Although the peripheral vision is generally preserved it can result in loss of independence as well as the ability to read or recognize faces. There are two forms of the disease. A gradually progressive dry type (dry AMD) that usually results in moderate central vision loss. On the other hand the aggressive wet type (wet AMD) can cause devastating central vision loss in a short space of time. Fortunately there is treatment available to halt the progression of wet AMD but it needs to be started within days after the vision is lost in order to prevent permanent damage. The biggest risk factor for developing wet AMD is smoking and ending the habit will be the most significant measure to reduce the risk of wet AMD.

A healthy diet, rich in dark green and brightly coloured vegetables will provide the most effective natural protection. Symptoms of sudden loss of central vision should prompt an urgent visit to your local optometrist who will refer you urgently if required. The Eye Care Clinic has recently appointed Dr Meon Lamont who has been leading the treatment of macular degeneration at Salisbury District Hospital in England and will continue this treatment on the Gold Coast. Dr Lamont also covers a wide range of general ophthalmology and will be treating a condition known as blepharospasm and related diseases. Blepharospasm results in uncontrollable, persistent, forceful blinking of both eyes that patients find debilitating and Dr Lamont can improve the symptoms dramatically with the use of muscle relaxants. COMMONLY known as ‘the flu’, influenza is a highly contagious disease that can be serious, debilitating and affect the whole body. The flu is caused by a particular group of viruses and is spread by infected people coughing or sneezing as well as from surfaces contaminated by respiratory secretions. Even laughing, talking and breathing can disperse the flu virus, but it’s no laughing matter. Influenza can cause serious illness, particularly in people with underlying medical conditions, older adults, pregnant women and young children. Many people confuse the common cold with influenza; however, colds are much less severe. It is important for people to be immunised annually as the vaccine usually gets updated each year because influenza viruses change, and this is the case for the 2014 vaccine. In addition, during the course of a year, a person’s immunity reduces by 50 per cent or more, so regardless of the changes it’s important to

keep boosting your immunity. Like all medications, vaccines may have side effects. Most side effects are minor and do not lead to any long-term problems. The viruses in the vaccine are inactivated

(killed) and cannot cause flu. However, some people may experience mild flulike symptoms for up to 48 hours as their immune system responds to the vaccine. Possible symptoms may include swell-

ing and soreness where the injection was given, fever, tiredness and aching muscles. Immediate allergic reactions to influenza vaccine are rare, however if you are allergic to eggs, you should

not be vaccinated. The vaccination is provided free through the National Immunisation Program to people over the age of 65. Check in with your GP to organise your injection soon.

Responsible Runners walk too! IT started in 2013 and, like all good things, is now expanding in an effort to keep Gold Coast’s beaches clean all the way from The Spit at Southport to Burleigh Heads. Volunteers for Responsible Runners have been running (and walking, hopping, skipping and jumping— whatever suits the individual) at The Spit every Wednesday afternoon since last year but thanks to recent support from Sea World Research and Rescue Foundation Inc and Healthy Waterways, participants are now running at Mermaid Beach and Burleigh Heads. Local ambassadors Lauren Hodge, Ella Horton, Ryan Adams and Naomi Edwards are joining forces to lead more groups to raise awareness about beach litter and marine debris issues along one of Australia’s most priced stretches of sand. ‘You don’t have to run. You can walk, hop, skip or jump while picking up beach litter and marine debris,’ said Ryan Adams, a local ambassador for the national Responsible Runners initiative. ‘We provide all equipment at the clean ups, which is also a great way to meet people and talk about how we can all keep our beaches clean.’ Justin Bonsey, Founder of Responsible Runners, explained how important it was to not only have a clean beach but a healthy community too. ‘Responsible

ROUEN on the river Seine, is the historic capital of Normandy. There is much to merit a visit to this delightful destination and I was fortunate to have a few days there while on my tour of “Literary France”. My early morning walk before anyone was about gave me a chance to see the many half timbered buildings, said to number 2000. There is no doubt they were lucky to survive the damage from WW11. No doubt there were reconstructions on the buildings from war damage. The streets I walked were away from the river where during the war fires broke out between the Cathedral and the Seine. Later in the morning while on another walk with a guide, we were shown where Joan of Arc, was tried, then sentenced and finally burned to death on May 30th 1431. And of course we toured the magnificent Gothic Cathedral. How can one describe the age of this church when Viking raids and fires have taken their toll over the centuries and finally in the 20th century, the Cathedral was bombed by the British Royal Air force and not long after a second bombing by the U.S. Army Air Force resulting in the oldest tower being burnt. Nevertheless our local tour guide gave us an excellent profile of the inside and outside of the Cathedral. On the walk we also

saw the ancient hospice for the plague victims, with gruesome carving showing misery and death on the outside of the building. It was on this site that part of “Les Miserables” was filmed. Rouen has many claims to fame. In 1892, Monet rented rooms opposite the Cathedral and is said to have painted it about thirty times. He wanted to show the building at different times of the day and in varied weather. These paintings hang in many galleries throughout the world and there are 5 in the Mussee D’Orsay in Paris. The estimated value of one of these painting is $40 million ! Monet is remembered with a statue of him in one on the charming squares. We had time to visit the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, where there are paintings by Velezquez, Modigliani and the the Impressionists, Monet, Sisley, Renoir and Degas, as well as the magnificent painting of “Christ of the Column” by Caravaggio. There was also time to visit the Museum of Flaubert and the History of Medicine. Gustave Flaubert was born in Rouen on December 12th 1821. His father was the chief surgeon of the city. Of course one of his best known books, Madame Bovary had some scenes in Rouen and caused moral outrage when it was published. Every five years there is an armada of tall ships

in Rouen, and we were fortunate to board a special Armada cruise ship of our own to see this wonderful spectacle at sunset. It is said there were 38 sailing ships and 8 warships in the armada, many of them training ships for cadets. They arrived along the Seine sailing under Europe’s tallest vertical lifting bridge named in honour of Gustave Flaubert. The ships came from all over the world, including Russia, Poland, Amsterdam, Mexico, Great Britain and, of course, there were many French vessels. Later that evening we watched the magnificent “Light Show” that is projected onto the outside of the Cathedral. The crowds milled around waiting for the night to fall for the spectacle to commence. Much of it concentrated on the paintings of Monet with the images cascading down in every possible colour. We enjoyed some wonderful French food while on the tour, and Rouen was no exception where we had dinner at La Couronne, which is on the Old Market Square. Founded in 1345 as an Inn, it is said to be the oldest auberge in France. The walls of this restaurant have framed photos of many famous clients who have eaten there including Grace Kelly, John Wayne, Sophia Loren, Salvador Dali, Lord Louis

Mountbatten and dozens of others including Julia Child who dined there in 1948 and recalled her meal in Rouen as a culinary revelation. We had a set menu and for once, I actually made

Antoinette O’Connor a note of some of the courses. A small serve of creamy cheese was served with two small rolls on the plate. A lobster Seafood salad was served prior to a

sorbet with calvados. Turbot was the main course, probably cooked in butter served with slivers of white asparagus, followed by a choice of cheeses, ( I selected a Brie) and the

desert was a superb souffle. The meal, no doubt was a suitable close to my visit to Rouen. If you are in Paris, it is quite possible to visit Rouen as a day trip.

There’s an obvious emotional connection between his music and Poland’s troubled history forged by wars, occupations and tribulations and it gives the visitor an insight into Polish pride and the nationalism which is evident today. One of the most emotive parts of any Warsaw tour is to understand the “Jewish experience”. It’s widely known that in WW2, the occupying German forces forced the Jewish population of about 400,000 into a walled ghetto area of no more than 3.5 sq.kms. Of those, about 250,000 were deported to extermination camps like Treblinka and most of the remainder starved to death. A visit to the Museum of the History of the Polish Jews and a walk along the traces of the former ghetto area and fragments of the wall will bring these events to horrifying life. Another moving experience awaits at the Warsaw Uprising Museum which chronicles the struggles of the Polish people against Nazi occupation in 1944, when WW2 was in its death throes and the Soviet Army was advancing. The Polish resistance movement, hoping to overcome the Germans and declare independence before the Soviets arrived, suffered massive losses and savage retribution leading to the demolition of 85% of the city. THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination. Like the sound of the above ? The Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) has now entered iti 57th year of operating rail tours. pany providing the service is Hurtigruten and they tout it as “The World’s Most Beautiful Sea Voyage”. Operating between Bergen and Kirkenes, the voyage takes six days on one of the 12 ships plying the route. All are purpose-built. The newer ships carry 1000 passengers, the slightly older versions catering for around 700. They are not typical cruise ships in that their principal purpose is to carry cargo and local passengers.

Hence they do not provide the variety of onboard entertainment that cruise ships specialise in. They do have first-class restaurants and panoramic lounges and they enable tourists to visit and enjoy places that would otherwise be unattainable. Short stops are made at towns along the route, often just long enough to off-load or take on a couple of pallets of cargo. Locals use the ships like buses, commuting from one place to another. Some exotic places are visited, many evoking distant memories from mentions in novels about World War II. Bergen, the southern terminus of the coastal voyage, is the second largest city in Norway with a population of about one quarter of a million people. Its harbour is a centre for the offshore petroleum industry, aquaculture and marine research and is one of Europe’s busiest cruise ship ports. Theharbour-side fish market gives a glimpse of the local industry with samples of whale meat and many other exotic offerings. A funicular railway takes sightseers to the top of Fløyen for excellent views of the city and harbour. Departing Bergen, the ship’s course takes it through many narrow channels, around islands and often into fjords as it calls at various small picturesque towns. The countryside is incredibly wild with steep barren rocky slopes plunging straight into the water. Isolated farms cling to rocky slopes, utterly cut off from civilisation. Waterfalls trickle down rock faces, fed by pockets of melting snow. Passengers have the opportunity to go ashore at the larger centres. Often there are walking tours, at a cost, or one can stroll around at leisure for an hour or more. One fjord of note is Geiranger which is 16km long. Here a shore excursion joins buses which ascend the almost impossibly steep road hacked into the rock. At the top, the ship far below looks like a toy. The bus traverses the plateau and crosses several

fjords by ferry. Water seems to flow from every crevice and one becomes blasé despite the wondrously different cascades. At one place called Trollstigen, the road plunges down an almost vertical rock face via 11 hairpin bends. It was a stupendous feat of engineering to build such a road. Many farm buildings are painted dark red, a throwback to olden times when poor people could not afford paint and so used fish blood instead! At Trondheim there is time to take a stroll around the thriving city. It was Norway’s first capital and the centre of the Vikings. During World War II it was a major base for German submarines. Now it is a picturesque riverside settlement. On the cruise there is always something of interest – like passing “the most beautiful lighthouse in the world”, or going through a narrow channel with just 10 metres to spare on each side, or crossing the Arctic Circle, or waving to another Hertigruten ship going the other way. Tromsø is another interesting city, the largest in northern Norway. There is the opportunity to visit the Polar Museum and the Arctic Cathedral. Many Arctic expeditions set off from here, including Amundsen’s. In November 1944 British bombers sank the 44,000 tonne German battleship Tirpitz just south of the city. Inhabitants of Tromsø have to endure low summer temperatures and long periods of darkness during winter. Depression is a common problem. Towards the end of the voyage the most northerly point of Europe is passed. The voyage ends in Kirkenes, just a few kilometres from the border with Russia. Most passengers opt to fly out from here but intrepid travellers can remain on board for the return trip to Bergen, often seeing different aspects of the scenery. All up, it is a great trip – see if you think it is worthy of that optimistic title.

THE Queensland Branch of the Australian Model Railway Association (AMRA-Qld) is on track for a fantastic model train show to be held on 3rd and 4th May in Brisbane. The AMRA-Qld is a nonprofit association incorporated in Queensland. The show which is the 37th annual event is to be held at the Doomben Racecourse. Entry is via gate 2 off Nudgee Road or gate 5 Hampden Street, Ascot. This year also celebrates the 60th year of the Australian Model Railway Association (AMRA)

Queensland Branch. The Queensland Branch is located at 20 Murphy Road, Zillmere and meets on Tuesdays from 10am until 3pm and most Saturdays (except the 5th Saturday of any month) from 12:30-4pm. Tuesday involves the affectionally called Daylighter’s Group which operates the indoor rail facility. On the third Saturday of the month, the Garden Railway operates at the Zillmere venue from 10am to 2pm. This involves an outdoor large scale facility for 32mm and 45 mm gauge track

powered, battery, clockwork and live steam garden railway models. Geoff Cook has constructed an Atlantic 4-4-2 scale model of the Southern Bell train which is a

replica of the service that used to be run by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company in the UK. Wilhelm Speldewinde and Warren Fleming run a German scale model LGB G 45mm gauge train (pictured). Donations from the general public who would like to assist the group in any way are most welcome at the Zillmere facility. The Queensland Branch currently has 260 financial members. New members willing to assist with the Brisbane Model Train Show would be appreciated as it is a major event. President Bruce Meiklejohn said that visitors were always welcome to visit the Zillmere facility prior to making a decision to join. Family, senior

and student membership is available. The highlight of the year will be the annual Brisbane model train show at Doomben Racecourse. This will feature a large range of train shops and steam trains for the backyard. There will also be interactive displays for children and demonstrations of wagon and building assembly. Evelyn and Peter are photographed with a Mamiya C3 Twin Lens Reflex camera on a tripod dating from 1900. Peter has also owned a Hasselblad, although his favourite was a Pentax 6x7 (film) camera.

IF the name ‘Peter Hill Photography’ rings a bell, or has you reaching for professionally-taken pictures from the past, then fasten your seatbelts for a trip down memory lane to catch up with Peter, now 82, and his adored wife of 57 years Evelyn. The Southport leg of this journey starts in 1961 when Peter, Evelyn and three small sons arrive on the Gold Coast from Victoria. In December 1962, Peter and Evelyn set

up a photography business at 13 Nerang Street before expanding to Main Beach, an adventure that lasts 22 years until they sell-up in 1984. Peter then establishes the Gold Coast School of Photography at his Peak Avenue studio. Many Gold Coasters are photographed, or taught, by Peter Hill. Coming from a bakery background, Peter first started work as a ‘baker boy’; delivering bread as a youngster while still at

At 16 Peter bought his first Box Brownie camera for £2 ($4); cleverly rigging the 1/60 speed with a rubber band so that he could take action photos at 1/300 of a second. At 20, Peter spent two weeks’ wages—£20 or $40—on his first professional camera, a Kodak Retina 35mm. Peter would earn extra money by taking the Retina with him on his bread delivery route where mothers happily paid him 2 shillings and six pence, about 25 cents, to take photos of their children. Setting up business as a semi-professional photographer on the Gold Coast was difficult at first but luck struck when Peter was asked to take photos of Miss Photography Australia, Marita Fagerström, in 1964. He never looked back. Peter says that even though he had no formal photographic education, he was keen and learned from world-renowned photographers when they travelled to Australia. Even today he can quote what they taught. With Evelyn skillfully managing the administrative Nerang Street location and taking passport photos too, Peter was able to work out of a speciallybuilt studio behind their Main Beach home. Eventually joining the Institute of Australian Photography (IAP), he was given a rating of ‘Excellent’ in the Portrait and Wedding field, although he also did press, commercial, advertising and aerial photgraphy. In 1978 Peter was asked by IAP to be a foundation member of the ‘Top 10 in Australia’, teaching others and assisting with Australian professional photographic standards.

GCWA to hold Sausage Sizzle Fundraisers THE Gold Coast Writers’ Association (GCWA) is a local non-profit group that welcomes everyone within the community, no matter your age or writing ability.

In order to keep things running, and running smoothly for the benefit of all Association members and visitors, fundraising plays an important role on the GCWA agenda. And what better way to fundraise than through an outdoor sausage sizzle held at a convenient location with lots of parking? The Gold Coast Writers’ Association, marking its 24th anniversary this year, will be holding a series of Sausage Sizzle Fundraisers at Masters Home Improvement Centres.
