Take the guesswork out of cross-cultural communication DID you know that about one in three people who live on the Gold Coast were born overseas and that more than 50,000 residents speak a language other than English at home? In addition, about 800,000 of the ten million visitors we welcome to our city each year are international visitors. These are just some of the reasons to consider in how we connect with others and why a CrossCultural Communication Fact Sheet has been developed with tips on how to communicate effectively with people from different cultural or linguistic back-
grounds. People who speak a different language sometimes have difficulty understanding our message. Other cultural differences, such as body language, can also lead to confusion. The Fact Sheet aims to help take the guesswork out of getting the correct message across. For more information, visit the City of Gold Coast/ Cultural Diversity website or contact Project Officer Kelly Rose on (07) 5581 6449; email: krose@goldcoast.qld.gov.au.
The proposed $7 Medicare co-contribution not yet in place
THERE is anxiety and confusion for some pensioners who wrongly believe co-payments announced in the budget are already in place. Some GPs have even reported patients not showing up for appointments over concerns they’d have to pay a $7 co-payment, flagged to be introduced in July 2015. These patients may mistakenly believe the co-payment has already been introduced and some doctors are concerned it will mean that people with diabetes, who need regular review, are not going to show up to GP appointments. There is also confusion about copayments for PBS-listed medication with some pharmacists saying that
they have had anxious enquiries, particularly from pensioners, who think the cost of their medication has increased. Currently, pensioners pay the first $6 of PBS-listed medication and the general public pays the first $36.90. However the budget has flagged future increases for both pensioners and the general public. Pharmacists have concerns that if the GP co-payment goes through there would be much more pressure on their services as people use them as a first point of call for serious illness. Any co-payment for Medicare services and for PBS-listed prescriptions is at least a year away – if the budget is passed it will not take place until July 2015.

Commonwealth Bank apology rings hollow for destitute seniors
THE Commonwealth Bank apology to loyal customers rings hollow for older Australians left destitute by its rogue financial advisers, says the seniors lobby. “Ian Narev’s apology isn’t worth the paper it’s written on,” said National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill. “The big banks and AMP, which control 80% of the financial advice industry, have led the charge to unwind the sector’s consumer protections.” “If the Commonwealth Bank was truly committed to the wellbeing of its customers it would have stepped up and opposed Matthias Cormann’s FoFA amendments”. “Instead, the government has quietly removed a catch-all requirement to put client interests first; scrapped the two-yearly opt-in for ongoing fees;
and ended mandatory fee disclosure statements for pre 1 July 2013 customers”. “The Commonwealth Bank’s apology has done nothing for trust and transparency in the financial advice industry, nor will the Government’s FoFA amendments,” he said. “The financial advisers are back in the driver’s seat, and they pretend they’re a professional sector. They’re not; they don’t have the educational requirements or standards of accountants or lawyers, and it will take another five to ten years to get there,” said O’Neill. In its May submission to the Senate Economics Legislation Committee inquiry into the Corporations Amendment (Streamlining of Future of Financial Advice) Bill 2014, the Commonwealth Bank commended the
Government for removing consumer protections introduced after the collapse of Storm Financial which left thousands of decent, hardworking older Australians dependent on the state. Earlier this week, National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill called on the big four banks to show community leadership and publicly denounce the FoFA changes. External modelling shows the FoFA amendments will cost consumers $533 million a year - $240 million of that will result from the removal of the opt-in alone. Independent legal analysis commissioned by National Seniors concludes the amendments represent a major detriment to consumers. Now, the new Senate will have the chance to disal-
low the government’s removal of consumer protections on financial advice, once the amended regulations are tabled. With the Greens and Labor siding with consumers to oppose the changes, their fate now rests with cross bench parties including: Palmer United; Motoring Enthusiasts; the DLP; Family First; and independent Nick Xenophon. Bumpers will look like new
WE’VE all done it before, got a little too wide when pulling into the car park, reversed into the hubby’s trailer and hugged the garage walls a little too closely. There is nothing more embarrassing than driving around in a scratched car but most of the time it’s not bad enough to pay high premiums on insurance or panel beaters to have fixed. Not to mention having to
live without your car for a day or two while it is getting fixed, it is inconvenient and frustrating. Fortunately, a business has noticed this gap in the market or car repairs and has provided a service that is convenient, professional and fast. BumperTech will come to where your vehicle is parked and repair scrapes, scratches and those unsightly damaged bumpers and minor panel damage. Forget searching high and low for matching touch-up paint, BumperTech uses a Dupont mini paint system that matches the colours. BumperTech is a cost effective repair service when compared to an insurance claim. “Research shows a well presented car brings maximum price and speedy sale,” John Cowan, BumperTech representative said. A five year warranty is given with every job. For an obligation-free quote on BumperTech services phone 0412 241 014.

them reduce feelings of anxiety and improves communication with care givers. The very cute robotic baby seal is fitted with artificial intelligence, software and tactile sen-
sors which enable it to respond to touch and sound. It also shows emotions such as surprise, happiness and anger. Residents with dementia are able to cuddle the seal and interact with it. RSL Care’s fundraising coordinator, Danila Franz said the purchase of the PARO seal was a great example of funds raised being used to support the wellbeing of residents. “Our Christmas Appeal star, World War Two hero Archie Wilson will be very proud the campaign he supported has been able to contribute to such a great initiative” she said. “The PARO seal uses cutting-edge robotic technology which is increasingly being recognised clinically as a rehabilitation tool.”

community news A city where everyone is included
Top service from top volunteers
WHERE would the world be without good-natured volunteers such as the pictured Tea Men, willing to put in their all for a good cause? The event was Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, as held in May at Paradise Point Uniting Church in aid of the Cancer Council Queensland. Bruce, Colin and John (left to right), and Ken behind the counter on pot-filling duty, were only too happy to help out on the day, switching between tea and coffee tiaras as required. And how did patrons rate their service? “Six Stars out of Five” appeared to be the general consensus.

CITY of Gold Coast has just taken a big step forward to create a city that is genuinely accessible and inclusive. Mayor Tom Tate launched the Accessible and Inclusive City Action Plan, at the Helensvale Library and Cultural Centre, a benchmark in accessible City buildings. “Providing good access makes good business sense. We will ensure we are nationally and internationally recognised as an accessible destination,” Mayor Tate said. The Mayor said the five-year plan outlined the work still to be done. “We’re working towards creating a city where everyone is included, and where equity of access is routinely considered across our operations,” he said. “This plan will make our city a better place to live and visit for people of all age groups and abilities. Our city has so much to offer and we want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in community life. “It outlines more than 170 actions to be achieved over the next five years across seven priority areas from employment and recruitment processes to transport, infrastructure and activities. This is already part of our budget and does not represent an additional cost to ratepayers. “Planning for access and inclusion is fundamental to the dayto-day business of the City for the benefit of our ageing population, parents with prams, people with mobility challenges and people with temporary or permanent impairment.” The plan has been informed by community feedback, and it represents an integrated and coordinated approach to access and inclusion. It also assists with preparations for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth GamesTM by including actions to develop a mobility or visitor map identifying accessible facilities in the city and networking with providers to increase accessible tourism. Mayor Tate thanked community groups and residents involved in the development of the plan. More than 20 per cent of the city’s population will be aged 65 years and older by 2031, and nearly 92,000 of the city’s population have a disability. The City is also home to 132,000 families with approximately 31,000 children under four years of age. For information visit cityofgoldcoast.com.au/access.

community news Seniors are assets not liabilities, forum hears THE growing number of seniors and their spending power make them an asset and not a liability as they are too often portrayed, a public forum in Melbourne heard today. Michael O’Neill, chief executive of consumer lobby group for the over 50s National Seniors Australia, said today that there was too much
‘doom and gloom’ surrounding the impact of ageing on the economy and the community. “What some commentators are largely failing to understand is that the growing numbers of people who are seniors present a huge opportunity for business, for the community and for government,” O’Neill said. “In a country as
wealthy as ours, older Australians should be celebrated for their massive contributions as carers, as volunteers, for the time they devote to civic and social duties and in the workplace – as well as their substantial spending power,” he said. “Instead they are too often demonised and regarded as a burden. “They want to contribute
Share Market Predictions
to their own retirement and would live without government involvement if it was in their power to do so. “But governments have to provide certainty in superannuation and investments and not give banks and financial advisers an unfair advantage by reducing consumer protection.” O’Neill was speaking at the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre’s free public forum today at the State Library of Victoria. He was one of a line-up of leading experts from Alzheimer’s Australia, the Stroke Foundation, beyondblue and other organisations who shared their insights and healthy living tips for over 50s. Topics covered include Alzheimer’s disease prevention and support for carers, stroke prevention, depression and anxiety in older people, physical activity for health living, healthy eating and health and employment. Awardwinning science and medical journalist, presenter, speaker and academic Dr Gael Jennings, was the Master of Ceremonies. WITH the commencement of the new financial year, investors are asking themselves whether sharemarkets will continue to provide positive returns in 2014-15. The Australian sharemarket has provided double digit returns over the past two years. So has the market now peaked? Should investors be selling their shares and taking profits? Or will the market continue to rise to new levels in the twelve months ahead? While a definitive answer cannot be provided to these questions, Gold Coast retirees will benefit from an Investors Group meeting to be held next week. Australians in Retirement will be hosting a “Stock Market Intensive” with three local sharebrokers providing their opinions on potential market direction over the next 12 months. Felicity Cooper from Morgans, Hayden Schneider from Bell Potter and Jason Sedawie from Decisive Asset Management will discuss the factors that may affect market direction and provide their tips on “hot
stocks” that they expect to perform well. Mr Robert Grover, Gold Coast President of Australians in Retirement said: “Making sensible and profitable investment decisions are important for retirees in managing their retirement finances. The expert opinion from these three local stockbrokers will provide retirees with valuable information to help them maximise their investment returns. Because of this unique opportunity we are opening this meeting free of charge to all Gold Coast retirees.” The meeting will be held at 9:30 am on Wednesday 16th July at the Broadbeach Seniors’ Centre, 23 T E Peters Drive, (cnr Havana Keys), Broadbeach. All Gold Coast retirees are welcome to attend. For further information or to register your attendance please contact Rob Grover at robgrover@hotmail.com. Australians in Retirement is the business name for The Association of Independent Retirees, the peak body representing the interests of retirees who are self -funded or in receipt of a part pension.

Scammers continue to call us SCAMwatch and Telstra are warning consumers to hang up the phone if they receive a call out of the blue from someone claiming there is a problem with their internet connection or computer. Recent months have seen a surge in reports of scammers calling people at home and raising a false alarm that they are at risk of their internet being disconnected immediately, as their computer has been hacked or infected with malware and is threatening Telstra’s internet infrastructure. The caller claims that they are able to fix the problem on the spot, however a fee for this service will need to be paid and the person will also need to download software that will allow the caller remote access to their computer. If the person resists or questions the scammer, they up the ante. Scammers have reportedly threatened to sue people for putting Telstra’s infrastructure at risk. When the person has requested proof that they are a Telstra rep, scammers have given out
a fake number for Telstra which, when the consumer calls, puts them back on the line with the scammer. These scammers are also wellversed at creating a sense of urgency to incite fear and anxiety that your device has been compromised and must be fixed immediately. Do you want to know how to store your vegetables in your fridge, so that they stay fresh for two to four weeks or more? It’s so simple, and it will save you lots of money like I have! Recently I came across a product called “Super Fresh Bags. These bags store food in the fridge for freshness and longevity. I’m sure most of us Villagers waste fruit and vegetables because they “go off before we get to use them up completely. Well, this need not happen anymore and the proof is in the pudding. Prior to Christmas I put various items in these bags to test. On returning from holidays some three weeks later, all of my vegetables were as I left Roslyn Roberts of Hammond Village, Coombabah, QLD them in the refrigerator – fresh and ready to eat. In fact, I now have had some spring onions stored for over six weeks and they are still fresh. My personal experience with these bags has been nothing short of fantastic and for what it is worth I want to share this with you. The bags pay for themselves in no time. And the best part is the bags are washable and reusable over and over again. I have been using my bags for over 12 months now and they are still going strong. You will find that these bags have a myriad of uses and it is just a matter of experimenting. The bags have a very minimal cost and are posted free all over Australia. Go on line and visit www.superfreshbags.com.au for more information or to make a purchase or if you don’t have access to a computer call

Arthritis Aid a Big Hit
WHEN a New Zealand woman devised a means of relieving her husband’s severe arthritic pain, stiff joints and swollen ankles, she did not anticipate the demand that would ensue for her Aircycle. The inflatable exerciser, allowed her husband to exercise his finger, ankle, knee and hip joints while sitting down. So effective was it, that an arthritis educator requested they be made for others. In any case, the more time you leave to practice and familiarise yourself with increased PIN use, the better. Starting with some of the nation’s largest merchants, the move will see all of Australia’s 800,000 merchant payment terminals undergo updates to no longer accept signature as the main form of card authorisation for most Australian cardholders. There will be no change to contactless or online transactions. Signature will still be a valid form of payment authorisation for visitors from overseas.

Seniors home care FROM July 1 there will be changes to the way government funded home care is delivered to Queensland seniors. UnitingCare Community’s Seniors Enquiry Line can provide information to
help explain how the changes may affect you. Funded by the Queensland Government, the Seniors Enquiry Line has available a helpful guide to assist seniors access government
funded home care packages under the new changes. The Home Instead Senior Care Booklet, The Home Care Solution, explains what home care is, how to identify if you or a family member needs help at home, where and how to find home care services, and respite options available for family members. “For older people, their carers, and family and friends, it can be difficult to know where to go or what help is available,” Seniors Enquiry Line Coordinator Julie Argeros said. “The Seniors Enquiry Line regularly receives calls from people in the community wanting to know more about the ser-
vices available to them or a family member so they may continue to remain living independently at home. “Sometimes it may be difficult to accept that you need help or that a loved one does, and having someone outside the family to talk to can be useful to help determine what options are available.” For a copy of The Home Care Solution or to access a range of other useful publications and information on services available to Queensland seniors, phone the Seniors Enquiry Line for the cost of a local call. This UnitingCare Community service can be contacted on 1300 135 500 from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.
THIS year, Australia and the world began commemorating the Centenary of the First World War. For Australia, this occasion marks a significant period in our history. The actions of the brave Australian men and women during the critical years of 1914 to 1918 will not be forgotten – they helped to shape the nation we are today. The Royal Australian Mint is proud to play a part during this significant period, partnering with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and the Australian War Memorial for the Official Anzac Centenary Coin Program. This five year program honours the courageous men and women who served and sacrificed for our country in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The coin releases from this program are thoughtfully designed to mark significant events and dates from over a century of Australian military service, from the Boer War and the First World War to Post1945 conflicts, including Iraq and Afghani-
stan. One of the special releases to date includes the fine silver The Victoria Cross for Australia coin. Befitting the beauty and prestige of Australia’s highest military honour, this coin commemorates all Australian Victoria Cross recipients and those who served beside them. It serves as a tribute to everything the Victoria Cross stands for; selflessness, courage, mateship and above all, valour. Whether they are cherished as a memento of history, loved as a piece of art or sought after as an investment, these beautifully crafted, inspiring and meaningful coins will help Australians share their story of sacrifice, preserve their legacy and help honour their memory. To secure your piece of this commemoration, visit eshop.ramint. gov.au. For more information regarding our Official Anzac Centenary Coin Program and the current coin releases, visit www.ramint.gov.au.

community news Miniature train exhibit attracts all ages Taking their hobby to the public proved to be a popular move as a steady stream of people of all ages enjoyed the displays presented by Miniature Train Club – Gold Coast Inc members at Australia Fair in Southport over two June weekends. One of the main attractions was a miniature rail yard layout designed to replicate the circa-1950 Southport Station passenger and freight terminal that existed in the area of Marine Parade and Railway and Nind Streets. A second display was a composite; explained as a ‘Domino Effect’ because of its varied themes.

Concessions decision good news for vulnerable pensioners COTA Queensland has welcomed the announcement by the Queensland Premier to maintain funding for pensioner and seniors concessions. “It was a good Queensland Week present for the 435,000 aged pensioners who would have been significantly worse off if the cut in household and transport concessions had gone ahead,” said Mr Mark Tucker-Evans, Chief Executive of COTA Queensland. “It is also good news for other holders of a Commonwealth Pensioner Concession Card, such as veterans, people with disability, carers, and single parents who rely on state government concessions for access to electricity, water, and transport.” The announcement by the Premier to continue the current level of concessions without the Australian Government’s annual contribution is recognition of the anxiety and confusion which many pensioners were feeling after the recent Federal Budget. “The Queensland Government needs to work with the Australian Government, as well as other states and territories, to forge a lasting agreement about the Pensioner Concession Card and the role of government in maintaining a safety net for people on fixed, low incomes. “COTA Queensland will continue to work with the Queensland Government on finding ways to simplify and improve access to concessions for those pensioners and low-income Queenslanders who do not receive adequate assistance.”

Kids Gone…. House too Big ? RECENT surveys of home sellers and buyers 50 years of age and older revealed some surprising insights. For instance, nearly half of surveyed seniors made the internet part of their home selling process, while more than two thirds of them used the internet in their home buying search. This clearly demonstrates that people born before the digital age are far more computer savvy than they’re sometimes given credit for. Even more surprising may be that the majority of seniors did not relocate to some distant destination, but instead kept close to home, with a quarter moving less than 25 klms away from their old neighbourhood and over half staying within 10 klms of it. As you plan for retirement or semi-retirement, what’s your next move? Is it in the same town or to another state? Is it in a country town or in a beachside community? Will it be a smaller house or in an active over 55 community? There are so many choices available today! Surveys have shown over and over again that most seniors want to stay in their own homes as long as possible. That means performing household chores as well taking care of their personal and social needs. Many seniors won’t complain about their ability to perform daily activities until their health needs become debilitating. However, the earlier the issues are identified, the quicker changes can be made that support them and their independence for as long as possible. As Active Adults become less agile, many will have to engage in substantial home modification or be prepared to sell and perhaps downsize or move into accommodation that is more suitable for their future needs. House maintenance and costs can become an issue. Even though none of us has a crystal ball for what lies ahead it’s important to put some forward thinking in place to prepare for your future needs. As a Real Estate Agent on the Gold Coast, I have been assisting my senior clients for many years with buying and selling their homes. My success comes from my strong dedication to my clients and under-
standing the unique needs of seniors. As part of our ongoing commitment we have developed a Seniors Real Estate Website where you will find many helpful and interesting articles as well as a useful Resource Centre. We invite you to visit our website at: www.seniorsrealestateservice.com.au If you are considering selling or buying a property, please feel free to call me at anytime. The Palm Beach Creative Stitchers first-birthday banner is displayed by several of those who took part in its creation, including president Clare Boyling (centre; multi-coloured top); secretary Jenny Patching (fifth from right); treasurer Joan Hubball (second from right), and Pattianne Bradford, far left.
PALM Beach Creative Stitchers has a growing membership with keen interest in needle work ranging from embroidery to quilting to knitting and
crocheting. New members are always welcome. Celebrating its first birthday in April of this year, the group was formerly associated with Gold
Coast Embroiderers’ Inc located at Mermaid Beach. Creative Stitchers Secretary Jenny Patching said, “As part of our first-year celebration, foundation members created a banner that spells out the name
of the group as well as incorporating our badge. Each square on the banner was completed by a different member, with Pattianne Bradford designing and constructing the finished product in time for our birthday.”
Jenny continued, “As a group we are extremely proud of this banner. No instructions were specified as to the stitches or format to be used; only the outline of each letter was given to participating members. The overall effect is breathtaking.” Group president Clare Boyling added, “In total, 28 members are to be congratulated for their committed efforts to the creation and completion of the banner. A job not only well done but well worth doing.” Palm Beach Creative Stitchers meets every Monday (except Public Holidays) between 12 noon and 3.00 p.m. at Share ‘N’ Care, 31/10th Avenue, Palm Beach. ANYONE who needs to make or update their Will should mark the 22nd and 23rd July in their calendar, as this is the day Red Cross is coming back to Robina with its highly successful Wills for Life program. Red Cross runs over 60 Community Wills Days across Australia each year. Ian Williamson, National Bequest Manager for Red Cross says “Writing a Will is one of the most important things you will ever do in your lifetime, and yet just under half of Australian adults still do not have one. “Most of us work hard to maximise our financial position for retirement, but it’s surprising how many fail to make a Will. “What can happen is that someone you don’t even know may end up controlling your estate and prized investments. “The Red Cross Wills for Life program has so far helped over 5,000 Australians get their affairs in order with a new or updated Will, and over 2500 people have confirmed a gift in their Will to Red Cross.
“It really does pay to take some time to ensure that your assets are dealt with the way you want” says Mr Williamson. “Red Cross Community Wills Days are a great opportunity to get your personal affairs in order. “It is also a chance to consider helping out a great cause. “We know that in years to come hundreds of thousands of people will turn to Red Cross for help and we are determined to be there when they do. “That’s why we ask that when you make your Will, and after you have provided for your loved ones, you consider supporting Red Cross. “A gift in your Will to Red Cross will help us in our everyday work both in Australia and around the world.” For more information about the Red Cross Community Wills days phone 1800 811 700 or email bequests@redcross.org.au Robina Community Wills Day, Tuesday & Wednesday, 22nd & 23rd July 2014 10am to 3pm at the Robina Community Centre, 196 Robina Town Centre Drive

by Donna Mroz Turcic ‘empowering individuals towards increased levels of joy, flexibility, selfawareness, creativity, self-acceptance and love, while gently supporting the release of unwanted trauma, pain and disease.’ Janina (pronounced Yanina) completed a Bachelor of Social Science degree (BSocSc) in 2004 at Southern Cross University. A Natural Health Practitioner, she is the mother of four and grandmother to three whose ages range from 22 to 11. But there’s more to Janina—much more. A Yogi since 1988, the passionate Janina is a Yoga Teacher/Facilitator and Professional Rebirther. She holds a Diploma in Therapeutic Massage; practices Reflexology Level 1 and is also a certified Practicing
Astrologer. With interests in many directions (not surprisingly, she has walked on fire too), Janina is a keen motorcyclist— an enthusiastic bikie Nanna, it could be said— with the gentle pseudonym ‘Lace’. A Harley-Davidson 1200cc Sportster with custom lace paintwork (hence the moniker ‘Lace’) is Janina’s chosen mode of transport. The eye-catching machine, the second H-D she has owned, has taken Janina more than 170,000km since 2002. This duo likes to travel but also enjoys caring and sharing, with aged care facilities welcoming unique visits filled with ‘love and light; health and happiness’ from Lace and her HarleyDavidson. aspects of entering an aged care facility, and the involvement of the resident’s family in making decisions, it is easy for those affected to be overwhelmed. Decisions around how costs are paid and whether to retain the family home have important strategic outcomes. Aged Care decisions are complex and specialist advice is essential to ensure the correct structuring of assets and income to assist in maximising pension entitlements, minimise the ongoing cost of
aged care and have estate planning wishes met. Julie Lockeridge has put together a well informed panel of speaker featuring Noel Whittaker to talk about all things “Aged Care” and answer questions you may have. You can join Julie and Noel on the 6th of August from 1.30pm in the auditorium of the Robina Community Centre. Entry is free and afternoon tea will be provided. FADDEN SENIORS EXPO Senior Gems® Dementia Program making waves
At Senior Helpers, our professional, trained caregivers take a positive approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care with our unique Senior Gems® program. Senior Gems® focuses on what is precious and unique about our clients and although we understand there are changes taking place, our emphasis is on what clients are still able to do. Our caregivers use techniques designed to: • Foster supportive communication • Promote a positive environment • Provide meaningful activities We work closely with dementia expert and registered occupational therapist, Teepa Snow (MS, OR/L, FATE). Senior Gems® classification system (based on the Allen Cognitive Disability Theory) allows us to understand which stage of dementia the person is experiencing so we can put together the best plan and select the best qualified caregiver for that individual, their specific stage of dementia, their specific circumstances, goals & cultural / personal values and environment. Our system provides a consumercentered care program that promotes positive meaningful interactions and activities between the client, their family members and our care staff. We have managed to develop tips for caregivers and families to help them navigate the changes that accompany the aging process. Knowing how to

make the most of their time with their loved one can be difficult, particularly during special occasions Senior Gems® program identifies 6 stages of dementia and associate each stage with a precious gem progressing from Sapphire to Diamond, Emerald, Amber, Ruby and ultimately Pearl. Caregivers learn how to identify each stage based on the symptomatic behaviors and changing needs & expressed wants of our dementia clients. All our Dementia caregivers have been thoroughly trained in handling challenging behaviours especially from previous experiences in dementia care & working with persons with disabilities. All dementia caregivers get a rotation system in place to avoid burnout and complete a series of OH&S to make sure that they adapt to the home environment and also to protect the clients & their safety Our staff have mastered techniques of non-confrontation in case of challenging dementia client behaviour. The objective is to maintain a safe environment, manage changing behaviours, provide nutritious meals, provide mindstimulating activities create social interaction and supervise daily activities. FADDEN SENIORS EXPO Is it time for a Hearing Aid? IF your hearing is not as good as it used to be, find out what you can do to keep your hearing at its best. Hearing loss is most noticeable in someone when left untreated. We as a society do not notice people wearing contact lenses to improve their sight. Is it possible that we notice people can hear well but do not notice they are wearing hearing aids? Making the decision to visit Michelle at Ashmore Hearing Centre is a big step towards improving your hearing. This is not as difficult as you might think. If you notice that you have reduced hearing, it is a good idea to take notes on the specific situations that you have noticed issues with. This will help Michelle understand which solution is the best suited for you. Whilst there are many different types and levels of listening devices, there are five basic components which are common with all: Microphones that pick The Hon Tony Abbott (left) and the Hon Stuart Robert (right) meet a local senior at the 2013 Expo

up sound; An inbuilt amplifier that makes it louder; An internal or external receiver that sends amplified sound into the ear; An ultra-small chip that processes the sound to fit your hearing needs; A battery that runs the hearing aids. Some hearing devices are so small once placed in your ear canal you cannot see them. If you have taken the time to read this, now it is time to perhaps make that appointment to see Michelle and her friendly staff at Ashmore Hearing Centre. Call today to book your appointment on 07 5564 8116 or visit Shop M5A, Ashmore City Shopping Centre, 206 Currumburra Rd, (Medical building behind Ashmore City) See you at the Fadden Expo and be sure to visit Ashmore Hearing’s stand for the chance to win a free giveaway!

community news Tai Chi by the Sea - an elixir for youthfulness and good health? TALES of a Fountain of Youth have been told for thousands of years but the legend came to prominence in the 16th century through Spaniard Juan Ponce de León. Although various interpretations exist in relation to the explorer’s discovery of a youth-restoring spring in what is today known as Florida, USA, it appears that any therapeutic waters have trickled away over time into an ocean of dreams. Or have they? The year is 2014. Tai Chi Master Rod Ferguson, voice serene and displaying gentle hand and body movements, leads a group of 100 men and women in a session of tranquil out-
door exercise on a brilliant Gold Coast winter’s day. Although not the official name, Tai Chi by the Sea, a City of Gold Coast Active & Healthy initiative, is set on parkland parallel to Burleigh Heads beach. Two of the participants on this sunshiny morning, Nona Maguire and Barbara Hartnett, stand near the back of the assembly; seemingly effortlessly swaying, reaching, turning in tune to Rod’s expert guidance. As surprising as a 16th century claim of youthfulness forever was Nona saying that she will be celebrating her 79th birthday later this year, while Barbara is “75 and a half”.
These two fashionable, fit-and-healthy looking friends—Nona from the local area and Barbara from Palm Beach—have been enjoying twiceweekly, hour-long Tai Chi by the Sea “for about three years”, with each praising its benefits for back problems and general well-being. Is there a chance that the waters from Ponce de Leon’s famous find have gurgled their way underground over the centuries and resurfaced as Tai Chi by the Sea in Queensland,
by Donna Mroz Turcic
Australia? If Nona and Barbara are any indication, it certainly is a possibility. For details about Active & Healthy, pick up a copy of the latest no cost 2014-2015 booklet— available at libraries and Council offices from end July—listing the many free and low-priced activities on offer throughout the Gold Coast for all ages. Let’s Get Quilt centre an eye-catcher
MARGARET Prove (pictured at front) of Burleigh Heads was quick to acknowledge that the work she was embroidering was “a quilt centre based on a Wendy Williams de-
sign”; however, the idea of using newspaper-print fabric as background was her choice, as was the actual placement of the colourful flowers that Margaret then “button-
holed”. Buttonholing indicates stitching around each flower, similar to stitching around a buttonhole on a shirt or blouse for example. Margaret, a keen quilter, would like all Seniors Newspaper readers, plus families and friends, to know that they are welcome to attend the Gold Coast Quilters Guild Festival of Quilts, to be held on Wednesday July 23 at the Burleigh Waters Community Centre, 131 Christine Avenue, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information about the Gold Coast Quilters Guild, please visit www.gcqg.info.

COOLANGATTA Tweed VIEW Club ladies enjoyed a delicious lunch of fish and chips at The Regatta Restaurant in Tweed Heads. The occasion, held in May, acknowledged the end of autumn. As part of the fun, Club members were asked to each bring along an interest-
ing tea towel on the day. Several did and then reminisced as to the origins of the ‘show-and-tell’ items. All agreed that “this was a delightful way to welcome the beginning of winter; in glorious sunshine on the banks of the Tweed River.”

News from THE TWEED U3A Tweed Coast
New Range of Pride Lift/Recline Chairs on display in store Banora Community Centre – Beginners’ Ukulele Group at U3A Tweed Coast Forum
AS we wind down Term 2 and embark on our end of term preparations, we wish to remind readers of our reduced member’s subscription of $20 for the period 1 July to 31 December 2014. This amount entitles members to attend as many classes as they can fit into their schedule without any additional cost. Our next term commences 14th July 2014 – we operate in line with the NSW school term. As a result of the many enquiries we receive from those interested in Tai Chi, we have pleasure in announcing we will be offering an additional class of this popular course when we resume, bringing the total to three. All of them will be operated by Bob (0402 484 954) on Wednesday mornings at Cudgen Leagues Club. Besides holding classes in Kingscliff, locations in Tweed Heads and Pottsville are also the venue for U3A classes. In fact, we have vacancies in our “Inquisitive Gardener” group which meets at the Pottsville Community Centre on Fridays at 11a.m. Glen – (02) 6674 1505
– is the contact. If Mahjong is more your style, Janet (0412 821 642) runs a beginners’ session in Kingscliff at 2 p.m. on Mondays. Our Friday Forum on 6 June was a very light hearted affair. Julia Gill brought along the Coolangatta Ukulele Band and the beginners’ group that she teaches at Banora Point Community Centre. These enthusiastic performers quickly engaged the large audience and soon had “volunteers” joining in with a selection of percussion instruments. The Uniting Church Hall filled with the sound of music as everyone joined in the choruses as the two bands went through their repertoire of music that is so familiar to all of us in our “Third Age”. Our next Forum on 1 August will be a more serious affair as Michelle Brown gives a presentation about the scams and cons about which we should all be aware. Details of U3A Tweed Coast are available on our website: tweedcoast.u3anet.org.au/wp Also from Lynda – Tel (07) 5513 1047.

with a celebratory luncheon in the picturesque setting of Nerang’s Coolibah Downs. Founder Yvonne Cody and her faithful friend Misty greeted 75 guests on the day; many of them dedicated Pets for Therapy volunteers and all of them keen supporters of this highly-respected, award-winning, not-for-profit group. Yvonne started her Pets for Therapy journey in 1989 with ‘my wonderful loyal JoJo, a snow white miniature poodle; extremely smart and a true gentleman.’ JoJo was with Yvonne for 16 years, with the talented silver miniature Misty, nicknamed ‘Miss Mischief’, coming
on board in 2005. Offering a unique free service to some 80 Gold Coast aged care facilities and respite centres, as well as to blind and visually impaired persons; mental health facilities and children with special needs, Pets for Therapy volunteers and their specially-trained dogs visit over 100 people weekly. Staging shows, demonstrations and meet-andgreet sessions, those visited often get the opportunity to pet the animals too. According to Yvonne, ‘to see the delight on people’s faces when they interact with our dogs, and to hear the happy laughter, you can’t help but be filled with the warmest of feelings.’ A giving, sharing and humble person, Yvonne says that she has been inspired by everyone she has met through Pets for Therapy. ‘It’s been such a pleasure to have had this opportunity and I look forward to the future.’ Although plagued by illness during recent times, Yvonne’s tireless behind-the-scenes team efforts continue thanks to a positive ‘the show must go on’ attitude. Improving bone health REDUCING the risk of fractures in older women is the aim of a randomised research study at Griffith University. The study led by Associate Professor Belinda Beck the Griffith Health Institute’s Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, is hoping to determine if high load resistance training is a safe and effective strategy for improving bone and muscle strength and physical function in post-menopausal women. Called LIFTMOR (Lifting Intervention For Training Muscle and Osteoporosis Rehabilitation), the study is aiming to recruit 100 healthy women aged over 60. Half of the women will be randomly assigned to a high load resistance training program either on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane. The other half will complete a lower load home-based exercise program. The program will only take 30 minutes twice a week for eight months, with participants being asked to undertake a small number of exercises of gradually increasing intensity. All study participants will receive free scans at the beginning and end of the study to assess changes in bone mass and muscle strength. “Unfortunately, one in three women will experience a fracture after the age of 60 as a result of a gradual decline in bone
health; some of which may be fatal or cause significant loss of independence,” says Associate Professor Beck. “We are basing our exercise program on one developed by Olympic weightlifter Lisa Weis who runs a fitness facility in Brisbane focussing on older women. Lisa’s program has had some success, but real data is needed to test the effects.” Physiotherapist Mr Steven Watson who is conducting the study as part of his PhD says: “We are optimistic that this research will produce some positive outcomes, with the women expected to show an increase in bone mass and muscle strength which translates into a reduced risk of fracture.” Globally, osteoporotic fracture is now responsible for 0.83% of all non-communicable diseases (1.75% in Europe), and therefore accounts for considerable worldwide mortality and morbidity. In 2013, there were almost 400 osteoporotic fractures a day in Australia, and by 2022 it is estimated the number will increase to 500. For more information on this study please go to www.liftmor.org or contact Associate Professor Belinda Beck on (07) 5552 8793 or Mr Steve Watson at steven.watson3@griffithuni.edu.au.
Keep warm in the colder months
WINTER is when we’re likely to stay indoors and use extra power to heat our homes. The good news is that it’s possible to use less power and keep bills down and still stay warm and comfortable during the colder months. There are many simple actions we can do around our homes in winter to reduce our power bills, while still keeping warm. Most of these actions don’t cost anything. The ones that do cost are more energy efficient and can save money in the long run by reducing power bills. Keep your heater’s thermostat set between 18ºC- 21ºC in winter. Decreasing your temperature setting by just one degree can reduce your power bill for heating by up to 15 per cent. Put on some extra layers – wearing
warmer clothing or putting an extra blanket on your bed keeps your power costs down and keeps you cosy too. Install a timer or program your heater’s thermostat so it turns itself off when it’s not needed. Saving power at home can be as easy as closing a door! Closing areas of your home that aren’t in use, like storage areas or spare bedrooms, is an easy way to avoid wasting power and money on excess heating. Sealing draughts and gaps around external doors and windows can save up to $20 a year on your power bill. Keeping curtains and external blinds closed at night and on cloudy days keeps the cold out and the warmth in; closing curtains can save around $55 a year.
A condition that’s still too embarrassing to discuss FOR almost 5 million Aussies it’s the drip that won’t go away. A Newspoll survey conducted on behalf of HARTMANN, makers of MoliCare Mobile, reveals that despite the fact 4.8 million Aussies experience incontinence, only 12% of those surveyed actually said they know someone with the condition, indicating the topic remains, ‘off limits’ and not openly discussed. The National Incontinence Report by HARTMANN showed nearly 80% of Aussies think people with incontinence should visit a doctor for advice however in reality, approximately 70% of incontinence sufferers do not seek advice from a GP or health care specialist for their condition. It is common practice for people with incontinence to ‘selfdiagnose’ their condition and attempt to treat it with minimal knowledge of products, skin creams and other support services available to them. Commenting on the range of feelings often associated with incontinence, Media Presenter and Sydney GP Dr Penny Adams said; “It’s important to remember as a person experiencing incontinence, you are not alone and that help is available. The right products and the right advice are the keys to managing it better. Once the right advice is sought, a person with incontinence can more effectively get on with their everyday life and continue enjoying usual activities.” Incontinence is set to rise to more than 6 million (or 27% of the population) aged 15 and over, by 20304. In the lead up to World Continence Week, 23 - 29 June the survey showed that awareness of incontinence remains low. • Just 12% admit to knowing someone with the condition, despite the reality that 4.83 million Aussies experience incontinence. This implies the condition remains too embarrassing to discuss • 6 in 10 admit that incontinence is a social taboo that
is rarely talked about • Only 16% correctly think that the majority of women with incontinence are under 50 years of age • 1 in 5 correctly saying the condition affects more than 20% of the population Pain that’s more than skin deep Another key finding of The National Incontinence Report by HARTMANN, showed 57% of people have no knowledge, and a further 20% have an incorrect perception of incontinence associated skin complications and the impact this has on health and wellbeing. Dr Penny Adams commented; “Regular use of continence pads can cause heat and sweat to build, weakening the skin and making it more susceptible to bacterial infection, skin irritations, reddening, allergic reactions and Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD)5. Many of these symptoms are preventable by selecting products that provide skin protection7.” More than just a leaky bladder: The day-to-day challenges that people with incontinence face is far greater than managing the condition in everyday situations such as grocery shopping and walking. People with incontinence often require help from loved ones and there are many hidden burdens such as taking time off work and extra laundering expenses. Despite its prevalence, incontinence remains a taboo that is seen as embarrassing and difficult to discuss. As the population ages, incontinence will become an increasing health and social problem, contributing towards isolation for a growing portion of Australians. Help is available; talk to your local pharmacist or GP or contact the National Continence Helpline (1800 33 00 66). The National Continence Helpline is staffed by continence nurse advisors who provide free advice, referrals and resources to consumers and healthcare professionals.

FEELING GOOD AS you get older, you may be at greater risk for Shingles — even if you’re feeling great. Even if you’re doing everything your health care professional recommends, the

painful, blistering rash of Shingles can happen to you. Because your immune system can weaken as you age, it’s easier for Shingles to break through your defenses.
Page 38 - Gold Coast Seniors - July 2014
Unfortunately, there’s no way to predict when the Shingles rash will erupt, or how severe the outbreak will be. But when Shingles happens, it can be excruciatingly painful.
If you’ve had chickenpox, the Shingles virus is already inside you and it could strike at any time. Your risk for Shingles increases substantially as you get older.
The virus that causes chickenpox never leaves your body. Instead, it lies dormant in your nervous system and can re-emerge as the painful rash of Shingles. When you’re young, your immune system is usually strong enough to keep the virus in check. But as you age, the immune system can weaken, allowing the Shingles virus to break through. You can’t catch Shingles from another person and it cannot be passed on
to another person by sneezing, coughing, or through casual contact. You can’t catch Shingles, you can only develop Shingles if you’ve had chickenpox. If you haven’t had chickenpox and you have direct contact with another person’s Shingles rash, you could get chickenpox. That’s why anyone who has an active case of Shingles should stay away from newborns, people who have problems with their
immune system, and people who haven’t had chickenpox. Your age is not the only thing that puts you at risk for Shingles. Other factors and conditions can weaken your immune system, allowing the painful rash of Shingles to break through your defenses. For example, physical trauma, surgery, and medicines or chronic conditions that suppress your immune system can also increase your risk for Shingles.
Psychologists raise concerns over grandparents’ health THE physical and psychological health of grandparents is worsening due to their caring obligations, according to psychologists. The Australian Psychological Society (APS) says grandparents who take primary responsibility for raising their grandchildren are sacrificing their own physical and psychological health due to their caring responsibilities. Ms Heather Gridley from the APS said given the increase in need for out-ofhome care, and the lack of availability of care options, grandparent care should be prioritised over foster care as it is known for higher levels of stability. “Grandparents are overwhelmingly older, female, single, from lower socioeconomic backgrounds and in poorer health,” Ms Gridley said.
“They are often managing strained relationships with birth parents, feelings of being overwhelmed and alone, and mixed feelings of wanting to keep the family together but resentment and guilt about being robbed of their own life or retirement.” National Seniors’ concerns over the health of grandparents was also raised in a submission to the Federal Government earlier this year. In the submission, National Seniors called for more social and financial support for grandparents including legal assistance, respite care and educational and training programs. The No.1 Benign Tumour in Men
If you know someone or a loved one who is suffering from poor prostate health, you’re not alone, it’s a common problem and help is available. The Prostate: The prostate is a walnut-sized gland that wraps around the urethra at the point of the bladder. Prostate gland enlargement can be caused by prostate cancer, but 80% of the time it is attributable to benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). As men age, the prostate gland increases in size, making BPH one of the most common agerelated conditions in men. The enlarged gland puts pressure on the urethra, acting like a partial clamp and thus causing numerous urinary symptoms. BPH affects more than 50% of Australian men in their sixties and 90% of men above the age of seventy. How Magnus Shield® Helps The Prostate: Magnus Shield® is an extract created from the
pollen (the male seeds that enable flowering plants to reproduce) of various plants, including rye grass. Magnus Shield® has anti-inflammatory properties which decreases swelling and improves urine flow. Magnus Shield also works on the urinary tract by relaxing the smooth muscle tone of the urethra, thus improving urine flow, increasing bladder muscle contraction to push the urine out, and relaxing the sphincter muscles, which help hold the urine in the bladder. Together, these actions would improve the urine flow rate and reduce the amount of urine remaining in the bladder after urination, thereby decreasing urinary frequency. Research Validates Magnus Shield’s® Effects: A number of impressive trials conducted have concluded that Magnus Shield® has a beneficial effect in the management of BPH.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 60 men suffering from BPH were treated with Magnus Shield® or placebo for six months. Nocturia (frequent urination at nighttime) was improved or eliminated in 60% of the patients treated with Magnus Shield® compared to 30% of the patients treated with placebo. In addition, 57% of patients treated with Magnus Shield® showed improvement in bladder emptying compared to only 10% in the placebo group. Residual urine volume and prostate gland size also decreased significantly in the patients receiving Magnus Shield®. Safe and Non-allergenic Magnus Shield® is safe and well tolerated. No adverse reactions to its use have been reported. Magnus Shield® taken orally did not cause allergies in patients who are usually allergic to pollen. Testimonials:

Skin cancer checks – don’t put it off
THE Tweed Skin Cancer Clinic in Tweed Heads offers patients a comprehensive and experienced service for the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and melanoma. Since opening in 2000 when there was less awareness of skin cancer and the severity was very high in this region, we have seen this improve as people have become more and more aware of the seriousness of skin cancer and the need to have regular check ups. We offer patients 100% bulk billing for all visits and procedures, and send reminders in the mail when you are due for your next check up. We also have an in-house Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon who attends to the more severe cases of skin cancer and melanoma. A trend that has been noticed by our doctors is the steady increase in rates of melanoma in the last 2 years. The doctors regularly report that most skin cancers and melanomas that they find, patients weren’t aware that they had them. They were found incidentally on a routine check or while checking another concern. This emphasises the importance of getting thoroughly checked by an experienced and well trained professional on a regular basis. After your examination, your doctor will advise what is right for you, and how frequently to come and have a review. For an appointment phone 07 5536 4961.

HOLIDAY & Leisure Building Buses and Tours For Everyone HOW do you take people to the best places in Australia when some of the best places can’t be reached by conventional tour coach? The answer Stonestreets Coaches came up with was to get a luxury 4x4 tour coach built. After many months of careful planning, Stonestreets ideas of the perfect 4x4 off road tour coach were submitted to Coach Design, a Brisbane based coach builder who transformed those ideas into reality, supplying Stonestreets a few
months later with a brand new luxury off road tour coach. That new coach has now done its inaugural journey travelling throughout the country over a 3 month period and is back in Toowoomba getting ready for its next stint “out the bush”. The next set of tours will be started off in July with the 11 day DIAMANTINA DRIFTER tour travelling into the Diamantina Lakes National Park, crossing the border into the Northern Territory and follow-
ing the Sandover Highway south westerly to Alice Springs. Another tour, an 11 day DESERT SANDS tour will then begin in Alice Springs following one of outback pioneer, Len Beadell’s tracks, the Gary Highway, right across the Great Sandy Desert to the West Coast of WA to Marble Bar and Port Hedland then travelling north alongside the Eighty Mile Beach to Broome. The KIMBERLEY & TANAMI tour 3 of this series of 5 tours begins in

Broome before setting off to Kooljaman on picturesque Cape Leveque, then into the fascinating Kimberley region exploring gorges and waterfalls along the Gibb River Road. This tour will spend two nights in beautiful Kununurra then two more nights in the awesome Bungle Bungle National Park - Stonestreets first ever tour to stay in this park. From Halls Creek the tour will continue to Wolf Creek Meteorite Crater then down the dusty Tanami Track
past Rabbit Flat to Alice Springs. Yet another tour, INTO THE RED ZONE will begin in The Alice and explore the MacDonnell Ranges, visit beautiful Palm Valley – only accessible by 4x4 vehicles, stay on a real working cattle and camel station at Kings Canyon then into the hauntingly beautiful Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park. Of course there will be a visit to the huge monolith and the chance to capture a colourful sunset picture of Ayres Rock during this visit.
Cross the Painted Desert and the Moon Plains to Coober Pedy staying in underground accommodation then to William Creek and Lake Eyre South, Woomera to Port Augusta and Adelaide. The final tour in the series, PIONEER SPIRIT travels north to Marree the along the infamous Birdsville Track to the frontier town of Birdsville. Take a look at Australia’s largest shearing shed at Cordillo Downs and the remote settlement of Innamincka. It was near here that Burke and Wills ended their journey and lost their lives beside the Cooper Creek. I visit to the Dig Tree will show where these famous Australian explorers spent their last few hours. Travelling east, cross the longest fence in the world, the Dingo Fence at Hungerford then explore the Currawinya National Park prior to sampling date wines in Eulo. The tour will visit St George on the Balonne River before finishing back in South East
Queensland on the 15th September. Not everyone can afford the time or the money to travel for 50+ days on a tour and that’s why Stonestreets have designed these tours so you can travel on just one or many sections. And this doesn’t just apply to the 4x4 tours, Stonestreets have another tour travelling by luxury tour coach in 5 sections right around Australia which can also be split into 5 sections, 1. Cruises Along The Pristine Coast, Brisbane to Airlie Beach 2. The Whitsunday Coast & Tablelands, Airlie Beach to Cairns 3. Across the Top, Cairns to Broome 4. The West Coast, Broome to Perth 5. Kick-off for Park’s 100th anniversary celebrations PICTURESQUE Lamington National Park will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2015, with the kick-off happening on July 31 of this year. Known for its natural beauty, rainforests, birdlife, wildlife, ancient trees, waterfalls, walking tracks, caves, mountain views and history, the Park is located 85km southwest of the Gold Coast (out of Southport); on the northern side of the Tweed volcano. The two main areas of the Park are Green Mountains, which includes O’Reilly’s, and Binna Burra. Ted and Judith de Boer, retirees living in Southport, are volunteers with the Lamington Natural History Association based at Binna Burra Visitors Centre. They are pictured here at an information stand at the Gold Coast and Hinterland Historical Society Open Day held in May. Ted and Judith can be contacted on 0755 325 459.

Steaming along
THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination. Like the sound of the above? The Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) is now in it’s 57th year of operating rail tours. Over 980 excursions operated by both steam and diesel hauled trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic tour in travel of a bygone era – travelling in style in the heritage carriages. On Ekka Wednesday we are heading off on a special coach tour to the Gold Coast to sample travel in the new trams. Lunch is included at Southport. Our most popular tour for the year is by steam train to the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers – it is time to book now the spectacular climb of the main range with it’s nine tunnels and the magnificent floral displays. There is a choice of 3 great tours to choose from. Looking for an escape to the north? In November we are running a 5 day daylight rail tour from Brisbane to Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands. Heritage diesel 1620 will haul this special farewell tour to the Lander series air conditioned carriages which are being withdrawn from traffic later this year. To book or order a brochure phone our office on 3252 1759 between 10am and 3.00pm Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A recorded message operates at other times. Ray Edser (Tour Manager)

HOLIDAY & Leisure A Cruise with a Difference Island, Isle of Pines, Port Vila, Port Denarau and Suva. New Zealand may also be a possibility. There is only one snag to all this – with cruising growing rapidly in popularity, bookings for Christmas cruises will be heavy. If you are interested in pampering yourself for this year, you need to get moving. So what are you waiting for? Just get on the Internet or go and see a travel agent.
by Allan Blackburn HOW would you like to get away from the holiday hordes doing their last minute Christmas shopping? What about not having to get all that food together. Even better, not having to cook Christmas dinner, or for that matter, any meals at all. The icing on the cake is not having to do any cleaning or housework of any kind. The solution is a Christmas cruise. With some of the popular lines like Princess, P&O and Cunard including Brisbane in their itineraries, you don’t even have to fly to Sydney. It is a simple matter of driving to Eagle Farm, leaving the car at one of the storage facilities, and you are on your way. While the Port of Brisbane passenger terminal is not the flashest around, it is functional and quite efficient – it has to be to enable the larger ships to offload over 2000 passengers and their luggage, re-provision the ship with fuel and all supplies, and then board the next complement of travellers, all within about eight or nine hours. Any cruise is fun and enjoyable but a Christmas cruise is one to remember. A festive air pervades the ship, from the little decorations on the cabin door to carol
singers in the foyer, to a huge decorated tree and, of course, the mandatory visit from Santa for the kids. Any cruiser will tell you that the food is a highlight. A Christmas cruise is appreciated even more since there are no hassles on the day. You just roll up to the restaurant and have a feast fit for royalty. A four-course meal with each course having a Christmassy flavour is just wonderful. If the
menu offerings are not quite to your liking, the staff go to great lengths to accommodate all requests. And to top it off, there is no washing up to do. All you have to do is waddle back to your cabin and have a snooze. Of course, if you really want to you could have a game of table tennis or shuffle board, or hit a few golf balls – all things are possible. Specific destinations vary with the cruise line.

Introducing the Queensland audiences to Silvie Paladino and Kane Alexander, will continue to raise the bar of amazing Australian talent presented this year. The Broadway Spectacular will include music from Chorus Line, Chicago, West Side Story, as well as some of the greatest hits of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Brisbane Sings Choir and dancers from Morton College will add the zing to the spectacular part of this production. Fresh and talented voices will join with the power and energy from Morton College to present a real Broadway event. In October the Best of British will finish this year of celebrations. Mark Vincent now with his 5th Album at No1 on the Aria Classical charts and Elizabeth Lewis who is currently performing with Victorian Opera will sing some of your best loved last night at the proms
songs as well as the wonderful music of the British Isles. Lisa Lockland-Bell will join Mark Vincent in “Best of British” at The Events Centre, Caloundra on Sunday 12 October 2pm. Joining the Pops for the first time will be Choir of Mansfield State High School who will join the QPAC Choir who featured so magnificently in 2013. Conductor Patrick Pickett has been delighted to lead the revival of this magnificent orchestra. As the other professional orchestra in Queensland, the Pops has grown in size and stature over the last 12 months and continues to evolve as an orchestra that provides great entertainment with outstanding production and stylistic diversity. The final concert for this year is the New Year’s Eve Concert and will be on sale in mid July. Following the triumph of this event in 2013, audience goers will be encouraged to secure tickets early for both performances to avoid disappointment. Tickets are on sale now contact The Events Centre, Caloundra on www.theeventscentre.com.au or phone 5491 4240.

IF the inaugural 2013 Mudgeeraba Music Muster is anything to go by, be sure not to miss this year’s hand-clapping foot-stomping Muster, comin’ up quick in October. Over 3,000 visitors had a great time last year and organisers, the Mudgeeraba Chamber of Commerce, have their sights set on more, lots more, enthusiasts of all ages having even more fun in 2014. But is that possible? Best way to find out is to mark Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th October on your calendar now; then go along with family and friends to support the many emerging Australian country artists who will take to the stage, keen to get a foot in the door of the music industry. Your backing will also boost the local Mudgeeraba community, particularly small businesses and their employees, a win-win by a country mile for everyone. Though possibly David to the Goliath of other, longerrunning festivals, there’s plenty of enthusiasm behind the scenes of the Mudgeeraba Music Muster with the event anticipated to gain popularity, and grow and grow, in coming years. For more information, contact Darryl Greer on http://darrylgreer.com/contactdarryl-greer. To top off the 2014 Muster (and what a tip of the akubra this is) an Art Union will be held to help fund the not-for-profit event, with first prize a trip for two to Nashville and Memphis including airfares, transfers, accommodation and $1,000 spending money. Tickets are only $10 each and no more than 2000 will be sold. To find out where you can buy your tickets, please visit: www. mudgeerabachamber .com.au.

The Can Man of Benowa MANY readers will be familiar with The Tin Woodman, sometimes simply called The Tin Man, from the 1939 film The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a character on a quest with Dorothy (played by
Judy Garland) to see the kindly Wizard in order to get a heart. The Can Man of Benowa might not be quite as famous (at least internationally) as The Tin Woodman, first devel-

oped by author L Frank Baum (1856 – 1919) in his series of Oz books, but there’s no question that a lot of heart and effort has gone into the creation of the colourful, curlyhaired Can Man who is ‘resident greeter’ at the Sculptors’ Society Gold Coast Inc. Sculptors Jo Ryder, 84 (on left) and Isabelle Thatcher, 77, are the creative forces behind The Can Man of Benowa, an artistic and inspirational endeavour that took some six months to sculpt from start to finish. Always happy and welcoming; seemingly dancing with joy, The Can Man of Benowa, albeit static, might remind some of The Dancing Man of Sydney who was captured on newsreel during celebrations to mark the end of WW2. In reality though,
he is of a totally different mesh, so to speak. The Can Man of Benowa comprises a steel framework plus chicken wire, foam and plaster bandages to hold him together under an array of eye-catching recycled, cut-to-fit and riveted aluminium cans. Perhaps Jo and Isabelle should be awarded an environmental prize for their inventive recycling idea. If you would like to say “g’day” to The Can Man of Benowa, please just contact the Sculptors’ Society Gold Coast Inc, Old Benowa Schoolhouse, 173 Ashmore Road/Carrara Street, Benowa; PO Box 8950, GCMC, Bundall, Qld 9726; email: enquiries@ sculptorsgoldcoast.org.au; FaceBook: Sculptors-Society-GoldCoast-Inc.

‘Aunty Pat’ Leavy opens Festival
Aboriginal people to mean ‘excellent’, as in the case of this inaugural Festival.) Brainchild of organiser James Moreland from Relationships Australia Queensland to bring together local non-indigenous and indigenous communities, the event was opened with welcoming words from southwest Queensland Kooma person ‘Aunty Pat’ Leavy. ‘Aunty Pat’ has lived locally for 45 years and is president of the Gold Coast Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Community Consultation Yallburru. ‘Aunty Pat’ stressed that it was not skin colour that mattered but what was in the heart. The range of free activities on the day, all showcasing Australian Aboriginal culture, included Advance Australia Fair sung ‘in language’; traditional dances and songs; didgeridoo playing (with it explained that the name ‘didgeridoo’ varies throughout the country); boomerang throwing workshops; food tasting; health screenings, and a variety of information stands. For more information about Gold Coast and area Aboriginal culture, contact Jellurgal Cultural Centre, 1711 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads, on (07) 5525 5955.
FRIENDS Karel and Marta enjoy the Gold Coast and all it has to offer, particularly the ‘beautiful one day; perfect the next’ ambiance. Not ones to stay indoors on a fine day, they were photographed near the entrance to Burleigh Heads National Park while out for an after-lunch stroll.
