Changing the face of men’s health

Max Walker - Ambassador

Merv Hughes - Ambassador

Ron Barassi - Ambassador

IT’S the hairiest month of the year and men around the country are preparing their upper lips for their prickly journey ahead as they shave-down to mark the start of Movember. Tomorrow marks the twelfth time Aussie men will let their Mos do the talking as they embark on the adventure to change the face of men’s health. While men have come a long way since the first Movember in 2003, one in three men still don’t take their health seriously and the same number are unaware of what they need to do to stay healthy, highlighting the need for the Mo to remain strong and keep growing. On the other side of the globe, the Australian Cricket Team is bound for moustache glory, dusting off their razors to start the month cleanshaven. Fast bowler and proud Mo Bro Mitchell Johnson knows all too well the power of the Mo and is gearing up for another outstanding Mo season after his stellar performance on and off the pitch last year. Changing the face of men’s health Continued from Page 1 “With one in eight Austalian men experiencing depression at any given time and prostate cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer amongst Aussie men, the support of Movember is so important,” said Mitch. Mitch is joined by teammates Mitchell Starc, Dave Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Finch and coach Darren ‘Boof’ Lehmann, and they’re backed by Mo Sistas of cricket – Ellyse Perry, Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healthy and Southern Stars coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick. Jeremy Macvean, Movember’s Asia Pacific Director, says all Aussies can help change the face of men’s health by committing to grow or support the moustache for the 30 days of Movember. “Every Mo acts as a hairy billboard for men’s health, encouraging blokes to take their health seriously and to take action,” said Jeremy. Since Movember’s inception here in Australia, more than

four million Mos have sprouted on the upper lips of men around the world, raising $580 million for over 800 men’s health programs in 21 countries across the globe. community news Over 50s outraged by Commonwealth Employment Department

PEOPLE over 50 desperate to find work in an ageist employment market are greatly offended by claims made by a Commonwealth government department that older people are happily retiring on the dole. COTA Australia said the claims, made in the department’s submission to the Senate Education and Employment Legislation Committee Inquiry says: “it is no longer acceptable for 55-59 year old job seekers to effectively retire on Newstart while undertaking a bit of voluntary or part-time work.” COTA CE Ian Yates said the commentary completely ignores the fact that if you

lose your job in your 50s it is extremely difficult to find another, which is why there are increasing numbers of older people on the Newstart Allowance. “This is an outrageous slur on the efforts of thousands of older Australians who are desperately looking for work and yet constantly overlooked in favour of younger job seekers,” Mr Yates said. “It’s bad enough that many people over 50 have to suffer the humiliation of multiple knock-backs by employers, despite their years of experience and clear ability to undertake the work. Now they have to put up with the Depart-

ment of Employment laying the boot in too. “The Department should shift their focus from going out of their way to offend older Australian job seekers and concentrate on ways to reduce the high incidence of age discrimination and look at ways to stimulate a jobs market for older people. “The evidence about age discrimination is clear and irrefutable, as Age Discrimination Commissioner Susan Ryan has noted, and presents a most disturbing picture for many older job seekers. “The government’s new Restart wage subsidy recognises that incentives are needed to encourage

employers to hire older workers – and more measures are needed.” Mr Yates said COTA and other advocacy groups had been calling for an increase in the Newstart allowance for years since people living on Newstart find it impossible to make ends meet and keep their heads above the poverty line. “It is ridiculous to suggest that older job seekers just want to spend their time doing a bit of voluntary work while living on the paltry income provided by Newstart. “Given the choice, older people want to have their wisdom, skills and experience recognised by being

fully employed in meaningful paid work as they have been for the rest of their life. “At the moment the Federal Government is trying

to increase the pension age to 70. That means if you lost your job at 50 and struggled to find another you could spend up to 20

years on Newstart. “I guarantee you not one older person is striving for that.” Source: SeniorAu.com.au

If fire, hail, or water blasting damages bonded asbestos, it may become friable asbestos material and must be managed and removed by a licensed friable asbestos removalist. The Asbestos Awareness Month campaign is overseen by WorkCover, the ACTU and James Hardie and supported by the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute. Funding for this campaign was provided by James Hardie Industries SE and the Heads of Asbestos Coordination Authorities. In 2011, the Asbestos Education Committee (AEC) in partnership with the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI) conducted a NSW based campaign to educate homeowners about the dangers of asbestos when renovating or maintaining homes. Following the success of the NSW Asbestos Awareness Campaign, the AEC and ADRI launched a national cam-

In 2014 the aim is to grow the campaign to reach as many Australians as possible including homeowners, renovators, tradesmen and handymen. Age Pension would be indexed by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) only which would mean that the value of the Age Pension would decrease over time. Currently, the pension increases twice a year in line with the higher of the CPI or the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI). It is then benchmarked against a percentage of Male Total Average Weekly Earnings (MATWE). National Seniors has been urging the government to ditch the changes to Age Pension indexation and to continue to use the current indexation method to ensure pensions keep up with costs of living and enable older Australians to maintain a decent standard of living. National Seniors will be closely following the Social Security Bills as they progress through Parliament. Media release: National Seniors

Bumpers will look like new

WE’VE all done it before, got a little too wide when pulling into the car park, reversed into the hubby’s trailer and hugged the garage walls a little too closely. There is nothing more embarrassing than driving around in a scratched car but most of the time it’s not bad enough to pay high premiums on insurance or panel beaters to have fixed. Not to mention having to

live without your car for a day or two while it is getting fixed, it is inconvenient and frustrating. Fortunately, a business has noticed this gap in the market or car repairs and has provided a service that is convenient, professional and fast. BumperTech will come to where your vehicle is parked and repair scrapes, scratches and those unsightly damaged bumpers and minor panel damage. Forget searching high and low for matching touch-up paint, BumperTech uses a Dupont mini paint system that matches the colours. BumperTech is a cost effective repair service when compared to an insurance claim. “Research shows a well presented car brings maximum price and speedy sale,” John Cowan, BumperTech representative said. A five year warranty is given with every job. For an obligation-free quote on BumperTech services phone 0412 241 014.

Working smoke alarms save lives THERE can be few more frightening moments than being caught inside a burning house. It’s a situation no-one wants to have to face, but fire brigades fight thousands of fires in buildings every year. Sadly, not everyone gets out safely. To escape a house fire, early warning is vital; that’s why you need a smoke alarm. When you go to sleep, your sense of smell also goes to sleep. If there is a fire, toxic fumes may overcome you before you wake up. Smoke alarms are devices that detect smoke and sound an alarm when activated. Smoke alarms alert and wake people allowing valuable time to get out of a house during a fire. Smoke alarms are mandatory in all homes in Queensland. There are two types of smoke alarms - photoelectric and ionisation. If you’re unsure which type you have, look on the base. A radiation symbol means it’s an ionisation model. It’s been known for many years that photoelectric smoke alarms usually respond faster to smouldering fires, while ionisation alarms respond faster to flaming fires. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services recommend that all residential accommodation be fitted with photoelectric smoke alarms. A Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme is available if you are deaf or hearing impaired, and have a current pensioner concession card.It is funded by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and is managed by Deaf Services Queensland.

Do you want to know how to store your vegetables in your fridge, so that they stay fresh for two to four weeks or more? It’s so simple, and it will save you lots of money like I have! Recently I came across a product called “Super Fresh Bags”. These bags store food in the fridge for freshness and longevity. I’m sure most of us Villagers waste fruit and vegetables because they “go off” before we get to use them up completely. Well, this need not happen anymore and the proof is in the pudding. Prior to Christmas I put various items in these bags to test. On returning from holidays some three weeks later, all of my vegetables were as I left them in the refrigerator – fresh and ready to eat. In fact, I Roslyn Roberts of Hammond Village, Coombabah, QLD now have had some spring onions stored for over six weeks and they are still fresh. My personal experience with these bags has been nothing short of fantastic and for what it is worth I want to share this with you. The bags pay for themselves in no time. And the best part is the bags are washable and reusable over and over again. I have been using my bags for over 20 months now and they are still going strong. You will find that these bags have a myriad of uses and it is just a matter of experimenting. The bags have a very minimal cost and are posted free all over Australia. Each year the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra selects a young Gold Coast musicians to experience the power of performing a concerto with full orchestra. Oscar Wong is 16 years of age and currently in year 10 at Emmanuel College. We also love inviting other community groups

and for this concert we welcome Coastal Charisma and Jonathan Albertini to weave their vocal magic. Who could wish for more!” More information and tickets are available online at www.goldcoast philharmonic.com or can be reserved with payment at the door on the day by phoning 5539 6076 (leave a message and we will get back to you). How do I know which aged care home I’ll feel happy in and what to look for?

IF you’re eligible for residential aged care the next step is to look for a suitable home. Deciding on the right home can sometimes feel a little overwhelming as there are often a lot of choices and you may not be quite sure what you’re looking for. The best way to find the right home is to visit a number of homes and see how they “feel” and talk to the staff, residents and families. You can apply to as many homes as you wish so that you have a range of potential options and you’re never locked into one particular home. All of our Homes have outstanding staff, who understand your needs and are there to help you get the very best you can out of life. We are particularly experienced in caring for Residents with very high nursing needs and those living with dementia. Opal Tweed Heads, one of our Homes in the area has also recently had a beautiful refurbishment offering a fresh, new environment. We would be very happy to show you around our Home and have a chat about what you are looking for. Please contact me if you would like any further information on Residential Aged Care, our Homes or to arrange a tour. Jacky Van Der Westhuizen Regional Admissions Manager Phone: 0438 705 233 E Jacky. Don’t book a scammer’s holiday

THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is warning consumers to watch out for travel scams. The ACCC has received 1,650 complaints about travel scams this year, with $100,000 reported lost. Most complainants were contacted by phone and many were offered holiday vouchers for $2,000 or $3,000. Others were sold fake trips to Florida or the Bahamas including tickets to theme

parks or cruises at greatly discounted rates. “While you are making plans for a hard-earned break, scammers are plotting to steal your hardearned dollars,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard warned. Simply searching online for a holiday can alert scammers that you are a potential target and they won’t hesitate to approach you with travel vouchers or offers that

always turn out to be too good to be true. “Watch out for these fraudsters cold calling and announcing that you’ve won a travel prize, ranging from discount accommodation vouchers to whole holiday packages. To redeem the prize, you will be asked to provide personal information such as your credit card and drivers’ licence details before they can send it to you,” Ms Rickard said. “Sometimes

scammers will provide authentic-looking tickets and itineraries but when it comes time to travel, these documents are useless and the business cannot be contacted.” Scammers have also recently been targeting homes and businesses with a fraudulent phone message from QANTAS or Virgin, which claims they have won a ‘travel prize’ or ‘credit points’ typically $999 - towards

their next holiday. In order to redeem the credit, you have to answer several questions, including handing over credit card details so that the ‘prize’ can be processed. Further information about travel scams is available atwww.scamwatch.gov.au.

Mickey Mouse is one old rodent! WALT Disney’s most famous cartoon creation turns 86 soon. Mickey’s first appearance with sound — and the first of his films to be distributed — was in “Steamboat Willie” on Nov. 18, 1928. The falsetto-speaking mouse appeared in “Plane Crazy” six months prior, alongside Minnie, but in that feature he was as quiet as a, well, mouse. The popular mouse, originally named Mortimer, first spoke actual words in “The Karnival Kid” in 1929. Walt Disney, from 1929 to original voices for both Mickey and Minnie 1946, provided the

community news The No.1 benign tumour in men IF you know someone or a loved one who is suffering from poor prostate health, you’re not alone, it’s a common problem and help is available. The Prostate The prostate is a walnutsized gland that wraps around the urethra at the point of the bladder. Prostate gland enlargement can be caused by prostate cancer, but 80% of the time it is attributable to benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). As men age, the prostate

gland increases in size, making BPH one of the most common age-related conditions in men. The enlarged gland puts pressure on the urethra, acting like a partial clamp and thus causing numerous urinary symptoms. BPH affects more than 50% of Australian men in their sixties and 90% of men above the age of seventy. How Magnus Shield® Helps The Prostate Magnus Shield® is an extract created from the pollen (the male seeds

that enable flowering plants to reproduce) of various plants, including rye grass. Magnus Shield® has anti-inflammatory properties which decreases swelling and improves urine flow. Magnus Shield also works on the urinary tract by relaxing the smooth muscle tone of the urethra, thus improving urine flow, increasing bladder muscle contraction to push the urine out, and relaxing the sphincter muscles, which help hold the urine in the bladder. Together, these actions would improve the urine flow rate and reduce the amount of urine remaining in the bladder after urination, thereby decreasing urinary frequency. Research Validates Magnus Shield’s® Effects A number of impressive trials conducted have concluded that Magnus Shield® has a beneficial effect in the management of BPH. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 60 men suffering from BPH were treated with

Magnus Shield® or placebo for six months. Nocturia (frequent urination at nighttime) was improved or eliminated in 60% of the patients treated with Magnus Shield® compared to 30% of the patients treated with placebo. In addition, 57% of patients treated with Magnus Shield® showed improvement in bladder emptying compared to only 10% in the placebo group. Residual urine volume and prostate gland size also decreased significantly in the patients receiving Magnus Shield®. Safe and Non-allergenic Magnus Shield® is safe and well tolerated. No adverse reactions to its use have been reported. Magnus Shield® taken orally did not cause allergies in patients who are usually allergic to pollen. Testimonials According to Mike B from NSW “9 Months ago, I have tried Magnus Shield for prostate medication made by Graminex Australia, I can say that it helps me mainly in reducing my night time

urination, a year ago, I used to wake up 6-7 times a night, and now I only wake up once or twice, and during last Christmas, I had 1 beer during the party, and I got up 3 times. Thank You for Graminex and I definitely will recommend this product” from Johns Park, NSW David Norton from Victoria Market Pharmacy said that at Victoria Market Pharmacy, we have been selling Magnus Shield for five and a half years, many of own customers are regulars who have benefited greatly, especially in the reduction of night time urinary frequency. community news Local schools help Nerang RSL – display trench complete

WITH the help of over 50 local school students, the Nerang RSL sub-branch has now completed an interactive replica trench as part of its World War 1 (WW1) Centenary Exhibition, at Preece House, Nerang. Located underneath the historically significant Queenslander, just 50 metres from the Nerang RSL Club, the trench display features sound, lighting and smoke effects reminiscent of the conditions the digger’s experienced. Project director and assistant treasurer of the Nerang RSL sub-branch Mark Swain says visitors can expect to hear the sounds of shelling and explosions, with carefully scripted dialogue that booms through the speakers in the confined, dark space under the property.

“The sound and atmosphere in the trench display tell a story, starting with general mundane chatter, which develops as chaos ensues,” he said. “You hear shouting as the sound of gunfire intensifies and when a soldier is hit, his comrades rush to his aid. “The words mateship, endurance, courage and

Learn to earn with Red Cross MATURE aged job seekers and those with a disability are being urged by Red Cross to consider heading back to the classroom to learn how to earn, now that Australians are living longer, retiring later and less likely to rely on welfare benefits. Bureau of Statistics figures show the average retirement age has jumped by five years in recent times with only 9% of workers expecting to retire before the age of 60. The figures also show a big shift in the way people expect to pay for their retirement, with fewer and fewer relying on a pension. Red Cross General Manager, Operations and Business Development, Chris Casey says “The trend towards

part-time work means there will be plenty of jobs in Aged Care, Community Services, Cleaning, Hospitality, Retail, Transport and Warehousing. “At Red Cross we have a range of training courses for job seekers to up skill, learn new skills or simply gain the confidence to re-join the workforce. “Job seekers currently working with an Employment Consultant are urged to contact Red Cross for assistance with a back to work training program. They are looking at issues such as the cause of WW1 and the reasons Australia went to war. The interactive exhibition - which has been designed to commemorate, remember and learn from those who sacrificed their lives between 1914-1918 officially opened to the public on 4 August, which marked the 100th anniversary of Australia’s declaration that it would fight with England in WW1. The display centre is located at Bischof Pioneer Park, 48 Nerang Street, Nerang and is open Thursday-Friday from 10am - 3pm and Sunday 9am - 12noon. Are you missing out on life’s important moments? WHAT if you missed your granddaughter’s first word, or the gist of a speech by your son at his wedding? Thousands of Australians get by on piecing together conversations and missing important moments that result in lasting emotional impact, research by Australian Hearing has revealed. The research has identified more than 87 per cent of Australians with hearing loss struggle to follow conversations and half of all sufferers (48%) and their loved ones (53%) believe hearing loss reduces the quality of communication by limiting the sharing of thoughts and feelings in conversation. Principal Audiologist at Australian Hearing, Janette Thorburn, said this could compromise quality of life and relationships for the sufferer. “Simple things we take for granted like chatting with grandchildren or partaking in conversations can be challenging for people suffering with hearing loss. It’s as if they never get to fully experience these moments, often missing words and sentiment” said Ms Thorburn. However, for the majority of untreated sufferers it is a burden often experienced unnecessarily - many people have hearing loss which can be managed effectively with proper diagnosis and treatment. Ms Thorburn said “people have a natural inclination to put up with or just ignore their hearing difficulties rather than take action.” The research found only 59 per cent of untreated sufferers had ever had a hearing test and of those who had had been formally tested, an average of 12.2 years had passed since their last test. “People who seek help earlier on are much more likely to get more benefit from them than those who put up with hearing loss for years before seeking help” said Ms Thorburn.

community news Tread the boards to see nature’s showstoppers ANYONE who enjoys visiting the Gold Coast’s largest mainland coastal conservation reserve, Coombabah Lakelands, off Raintree Glen, can now experience the park’s diverse flora and fauna from a different perspective along a new boardwalk and recreational trail. Located off Myola Court, Coombabah, the recentlycompleted 300-metre long boardwalk adjoins the Coombabah Creek tributary and has been built with both the environment and ongoing costs in mind. It uses eco-smart materials with a lifespan exceeding 50 years, more than three times that of the previous boardwalk. The latest structure was also carefully constructed to minimise the impact on the marine environment. Councillor Cameron Caldwell said the new boardwalk is a worthwhile investment by the City on behalf of both residents and visitors.

Pictured is a section of the new 300-metre boardwalk, located off Myola Court and next to the Coombabah Creek tributary. The entire walk, which includes a recreational trail, totals 1.2 km

“Coombabah is one of our natural treasures. It provides refuge for a huge diversity of fauna and flora no longer common in our urban areas, meaning the new boardwalk is a great way for everyone to get-up-close to nature.” The 833ha conservation reserve is home to 274 species of animals, including seven species listed as

vulnerable or near-threatened such as the koala, powerful owl and greyheaded flying fox, along with 24 internationally protected migratory bird species. The Lakelands area also contains eastern-grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies (including the golden colour morph of the swamp wallaby), bandi-

FOR the 12th year running, the Swell Sculpture Festival was held in September at Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast. This year 64 sculptures, spread over one kilometre of sand and beachside parkland, awed and wowed thousands of visitors over ten days. Viewing the individual works, some having travelled distances from Europe and South Korea, was an experience in itself; actually meeting a participating artist was an added bonus. Adriaan Vanderlugt, born in Holland during WWII and raised in Canada, has lived in the Whitsundays, Queensland for over 35 years with Denise, his Australian wife, partner and fellow professional artist. Swell 2014 marked the sixth time Adriaan had entered a sculpture in this internationally-recognised event with Hatchlings, a clutch of 110 baby turtles handcrafted from recycled copper, a tribute to the trials and tribulations faced by these marine creatures from birth. Visitors to Apex Park, off Snapper Rocks Road, Coolangatta can view Adriaan’s 2009

Centrelink changes could affect you CHANGES to be introduced by Centrelink could have a permanently detrimental effect on retirees’ pension entitlements. This claim was recently made by Mr Robert Grover, Gold Coast President of Australians in Retirement. Many retirees currently receive a Centrelink pension and also have money invested in superannuation in pension mode. In assessing the retiree’s pension entitlement, Centrelink currently appliers a relatively favourable formula to the retiree’s superannuation. This applies regardless of whether your superannuation is in a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF), an Industry Fund, a retail super fund or any other superannuation structure. However this method of favourable assessment will change on 1st January 2015 and in many cases will result in a reduction in pension payments. Some pensioners, if subject to the change, may lose their pension entitlement completely. Regrettably a change in a pensioner’s circumstances at some time in the future will trigger the new form of assessment. And these “triggering” changes can be somewhat innocuous. Some examples are: • If your super is in pension mode with XYZ Industry Fund and you change it to ABC Industry Fund to get a better return • If your super is in accumulation mode in your own SMSF and at any time in the future you change it to pension mode • If your spouse’s super passes to you on their death but they have not nominated you as a reversionary pensioner. • If you temporarily become ineligible for Centrelink (eg leaving Australia for an extended holiday) but then re-apply at a later date. The changes that will be introduced on 1st January 2015 can be quite complex and they could have a permanently detrimental effect on a retiree’sCentrelink entitlement. This issue will be fully explained and discussed by a Centrelink Financial Information Service Officer at the next meeting of Australians in Retirement. The meeting will be held at 9:30 am at the Broadbeach Seniors’ Centre, 23 T E Peters Drive, (cnr Havana Keys), Broadbeach onThursday 13th November. All Gold Coast retirees are welcome to attend. For further information or to register your attendance please contact Rob Grover at robgrover@hotmail.com. Australians in Retirement is the business name for The Association of Independent Retirees, the peak body representing the interests of retirees who are self funded or in receipt of a part pension. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

community news Blood test to diagnose early onset Alzheimer’s A non-invasive blood test that could diagnose early onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD) with increased accuracy has been developed by University of Melbourne researchers. The research team previously identified that changes in the brain occur two decades before patients show signs of dementia. These changes can be detected through expensive brain imaging procedures. The new early detection blood-test could predict these changes and a person’s risk of developing AD much earlier than is currently possible. The blood test has the potential to improve pre-

diction for AD to 91 per cent accuracy. However, this needs to be further tested in a larger population across three to five years, due to AD being a progressive disease. In an initial trial group using the blood test, one in five healthy participants with no memory complaints tested positive. On further medical investigation using brain-imaging techniques, these patients showed signs of degeneration in the brain resembling AD features. Lead researcher Professor Andrew Hill from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Bio21 Institute said the blood test would sig-

nificantly advance efforts to find new treatments for the degenerative disease and could lead to better preventative measures prior to diagnoses. “This blood test would be crucial to the development of therapeutic and preventative drugs for AD. It can be used to identify patients for clinical drugs and monitoring improvement on treatment,” he said. Dr Lesley Cheng from the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology Bio21 Institute believes this test is an accessible method for patients to accurately predict their susceptibility to AD. “This test provides the possibility of early detection of

Imaging AD by using a simple in Molecular Psychiatry, of Neuroscience and Australian blood test which has been was done in collaboration Mental Health, the CSIRO Biomarker and Lifestyle designed to also be cost- with The Florey Institute and Austin Health and (AIBL) study of Aging. effective. Furthermore, it is highly accessible for patients and physicians compared to organising a brain scan or undergoing a neuropsychological test. “Patients with a family history of AD or those with memory concerns could be tested during a standard health check at a medical clinic. This test could ease concerns for patients experiencing normal memory problems due to natural ageing. Those identified as high risk could then be monitored by their doctor,” she said. Let’s Get A model hobby turns out Tall Ships NEVILLE Bulley, 65, is a skilled hand at recycling materials that many would discard; creating eye-catching conversation pieces out of seemingly nothing. Regular readers of the Seniors Newspaper may remember a 2012 article about Neville that told how he had constructed an expansive replica—out of seemingly nothing—of the Brisbane Sisters of Mercy St Vincent’s Home for Children where Neville and his five brothers and sisters had lived in the late 1950s/early ’60s. The model was later generously donated by Neville and his wife Gloria to Mercy Family Services. Working out of his Southport garage-cumworkshop, Neville has now created four modelsized Tall Ships, “not to scale”, vessels made from a mix of mostly old red cedar hand railing, string, popsicle and chopsticks, meat skewers, doweling,

beads, calico for sails, eyelets, and glue; with toy cannons not to be forgotten. Neville downloads photos of Tall Ships from the Internet and the magic starts there. The replica of the Home for Children was based mostly on Neville’s childhood memories. Spending many hours on such detailed work would be a challenge for most

people but, surprisingly, it is even more so for the quietly-spoken Neville. In 2004 he was diagnosed with a brain tumour— prolactinoma, disease of the pituitary gland—after a discectomy (surgical removal of a herniated disc) in 2003. With little concept of time, it’s Gloria, Neville’s wife of almost 46 years, who confirms that the largest Tall Ship took

him about three to four months to assemble, with six to eight weeks spent on each of the smaller ships. Neville is a determined man who focuses on the positive. Neville and Gloria share three children, Tammy, Darcy and Nicole, plus grandchildren Brandon, 15, and Ethan, 13. Words and photo by Donna Mroz Turcic

Support the RSL this Remembrance Day

IN the lead up to Remembrance Day on Tuesday 11 November, I encourage all Australians to purchase and wear a red poppy, in support of the Returned and Services League’s (RSL) Poppy Day Appeal. Buying a poppy contributes significantly to the fundraising work of the RSL. The money raised helps provide financial and medical assistance, advocacy and support services to current and former serving members of the defence force and their families. Wearing a red poppy acknowledges the service and sacrifice of those who have served, including the more than 102,000 Australians who lost their lives in war, peacekeeping and other operations. Red poppies have long been a

symbol of Remembrance Day, the red Flanders poppy was one of the first plants to grow on the battlefields of the Western Front. The poppy sellers you see in your local community are volunteers, many of them veterans or current serving members, who

give up their time each year for this great cause and strongly contribute to the success of the Appeal. In light of this, I urge all Australians to consider volunteering as Appeals Collectors for the Appeal. I commend the RSL for the work they do and thank all

those who have supported the Appeal in the past. For more information on the Appeal and the RSL, or to volunteer or donate, please contact your local RSL. The RSL National Office can be contacted on 02 6248 7199.

BEDS & Bedding Discover easy movement in bed NOW!

FOR many suffering illness the basic function of turning over in bed can be difficult and often painful. ’Neeki’ has developed a unique style of fitted sheet called the ‘Wonder Sheet’. It could be the answer to your movement difficulties! Who Benefits: The ‘Wonder Sheet’ can benefit anyone of any age including the young, suffering from limited bed mobility including, but not limited to; Parkinson’s disease, Motor neurone disease, Stroke, Chronic arthritis, Ongoing chronic illness and disability, Quadriplegia and paraplegia, Chronic pain, Brain injury, Joint pain, Poor circulation, Any illness or disorder affecting the ability to transfer in bed. The Benefits; • It can reduce pain and discomfort because the user can now move more easily. • It can reduce the amount of effort required to move because it easily compliments existing equipment being used such as a hoist or bed stick. • You’ll require minimal help from a carer to move as the unique design can replace the use of a slide sheet, giving you a feeling of freedom. If assistance is still necessary then it also reduces the effort and strain on the carers’ body. • Fits onto the mattress like a normal fitted sheet with elastic all the way around to ensure a snug fit. There is no need to insert or remove it like a slide sheet. It can be custom made to suit. • Creates a feeling of independence as moving and turning in bed is made easier which in turn is highly beneficial to the users mental state. The ‘Wonder Sheet’ fitted sheet is an effective therapeutic tool as the satin panel which sits under the user’s hips and bottom area allows for increased bed mobility, particularly with turning over in bed and swinging legs in and out of bed. I started the business back in 2003 with a fitted sheet we called the ‘Wonder Sheet’! My mother and I created this design to help my dad who’s had Parkinson’s disease since diagnosed at 39years of age in 1983. He started to have problems turning over in bed on normal sheets so with my background in textiles and designs, different fabrics were tried tested. We finally decided that satin was the answer. It was the most durable, comfortable, luxurious and accessible fabric on the market and it worked amazingly and felt beautiful without feeling clinical. It was all about the position of the satin that made it work so well. The therapeutic benefits were fantastic and the feedback from other sufferers was so good it turned into a hobby. I juggled two jobs, in hospitality and Property Management and really started to enjoy helping people. With the support from loved ones and with a real passion I gave up all the jobs and pursued a range of bed linen that everyone can enjoy. For more information call 5591 1629 or 0412 143 878. Welcome to tick season A tick check should be part of your daily routine if you own a cat or dog. Although most ticks are found around the head and neck of the animal as well as inside the ears, they can end up anywhere on the body. It is especially important to search longhaired dogs very thoroughly between the eyes and the end of the nose. The most reliable way to locate the ticks is to systematically run your fingers through your cat or dog’s coat. If the head is left in, don’t worry as the tick will die and inject no more poison. Always assume there is more than one tick and continue your systematic search. The paralysis tick injects a toxin into its host dog or cat as it feeds. Normally, cats show more resistance to this poison than dogs, but if affected the signs are similar for both. Increased body temperature due to either hot weather or exercise will exacerbate symptoms. If left to run its course, a case of tick poisoning goes through three stages. Early signs are a change in voice, weakness in the back legs and vomiting, followed by panting, progressing to loud breathing, even grunting noises. As signs of poisoning progress, the animals become unable to stand, breathing becomes exaggerated and difficult and death follows quite quickly. Even when you find a tick and remove it, your pet isn’t out of the woods. There’s a very good chance the tick could have left a residue of poison under the skin which will then be slowly absorbed. Make sure you see your vet at the earliest opportunity. This can be a very traumatic time for your pet. Clearly, preventing tick paralysis is a much safer and cheaper alternative than treating the condition once your animal has begun to suffer its effects.

AUTO Business Check the tyres ... but check your health first before you drive north with the grey nomads HOSPITALS in North Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia’s north are being put under strain by travelling retirees who require treatment as they head north for the winter, doctors say. Thousands of southerners hit the highways in caravans and campers at this time of year in search of winter sun, earning themselves the nickname ‘grey nomads’. Most are from southern states, but many hundreds of Brisbane and regional Queenslanders make the trek north. However, doctors say many of them are heading off without adequate health checks and medication, and end up clogging up the health system in small northern towns. Popular areas such as Queensland’s Sunshine Coast say the influx of heat-seeking visitors from the south is putting a strain on emergency departments. A Nambour General Hospital spokesman, for example, said winter meant patients came with different diseases, the most common being respiratory illnesses. He says patient-stays in the colder months were typically longer than during summer, because people took longer to recover. “We notice a lot of people who have a lot of medical conditions move up from the southern states because they can’t handle their winter,” he said. “We get that load of people, which adds to our number of people to deal with here.” Rob Whitehead, a representative of the Rural Doctors Association, says the annual migration north by older travellers increases demand for

Travelling is fun and rewarding for ‘grey nomads’, but make sure your health is up to par before you hit the highway

doctor and hospital services each winter. “I think it’s great that people can get to see a very special part of Australia, but it does put an added strain on health services that are already over-stretched at times,” he said. “Making sure that your health has been checked over by your GP before you leave, is probably a really useful thing to do.” Grey nomad David Cummins says he has been travelling to Broome in Western Australia each dry season for more than a decade. He said he and his wife Lynn made sure they were fully prepared for the trip. “It’s fair to say a lot of

people in caravan parks staying longer than are of an aging category, planned in some places and I’ve known people who, for different reasons, have had to go to the hospital or whatever,” he said. “Before we come away, we make sure we have our annual check-ups, we go to our GPs and make sure everything’s done, and we fill our scripts if we need to.” Leslie Parker is the manager of the Broome Doctors Practice and an attendant at the surgery’s reception, putting her at the frontline of the retiree influx. She says the majority are older people who’ve got the time and are travelling at their own pace and end up

and they run out of their medications Ms Parker says the most-common problem is retirees hitting the road without getting a long enough supply of prescription medication. “The majority are older people who’ve got the time and are travelling at their own pace, so they end up staying longer than planned in some places and they run out of their medications,” she said. Health authorities are urging people to have a thorough health check before hitting the road, fill prescriptions ahead of time and ensure their medication is stored appropriately to remain effective in the warmer temperatures.

News from THE TWEED Cutting edge new technology for cataract surgery GOLD Coasters and Northern River patients now have access to cutting edge new technology that could save their eyesight-the first of its kind to be offered in Queensland and northern NSW. Tweed Day Surgery’s eye surgeons Dr Emanuel Svoboda and Dr Meon

Lamont, who offer cataract surgery with no gap payments for insured patients, said the new technology is leaps and bounds ahead of previous equipment. The Centurion Vision System means safer Cataract eye surgery, resulting in better results and less complications.

Tweed Day Surgery has invested more than $300,000 in the new equipment, which has revolutionised cataract surgery. The Eye Care Clinic also recently invested in the latest IOL Master for measuring patients in preparation for cataract surgery providing exceptional out-

comes. The new equipment combines multiple technologies to set new standards in the performance of cataract surgery. The risks that are usually associated with cataract surgery, such as rupture of the capsule and burning of the cornea, have now been substantially minimised thanks to this new technology. The system enables experienced and skilled eye surgeons to perform the procedure with such accuracy and reduced operating time that we are simply not in the eye long enough to cause long term damage. The ophthalmologists at The Eye Care Clinic, who

have subspecialty training in advanced cataract techniques, say older machines had difficulty when it came to removing dense cataracts, but the new technology made this type of surgery safer and more predictable. With the old technology it was a bit like drilling through concrete, but the new equipment passes through the cataract smoothly, like it’s going through butter”, say the ophthalmoligsts. Not only is the cutting tip much more efficient, improvements in the fluidics of the system means a more controlled operating environment. This causes significantly

less damage to the eye, particularly in complex cataract surgery compared to previous technology, and in many cases, the outcome is as good as for a straightforward cataract procedure. Tweed Day Surgery has also upgraded its microscope, giving it new capabilities with incredible accuracy. Dr Svoboda and Dr Lamont say the upgrades allowed for the precise correction of astigmatism during the cataract surgery - a condition which causes blurred vision. Tweed Day Surgery now has the latest Zeis Lumera operating microscope, which incorporates the

new Callisto Markerless Toric Alignment System - which allows for precise astigmatism correction at the same time as the cataract surgery. This system has the ability to align the astigmatism correcting implant within one degree of that intended an incredible accuracy that we previously could only dream of. At Tweed Day Surgery thousands of cataract surgeries are performed. Not only will these people receive the best care available, it comes at no extra expense to the patient.

SLEEPING Solutions

Good night’s sleep should be more than just a dream WHAT do cats and nannies have in common? Napping! So, are cat naps and nannie naps good for you? Taking a nap during the day can actually have good benefits for your health. Many people who regularly treat themselves to short naps claim they come with benefits. Many seniors suffer from sleep deprivation, which can lead to poor performance and attitude during the day. Because of sleepiness during the day, some are more unproductive and irritable than they should be, and more prone to avoidable accidents than they want to be. Taking a nap can easily fix these issues in a lot of cases. For many older folks, a good night’s sleep is but a dream; they have trouble falling asleep and awaken after only a few hours. Their daytime fatigue may be so overwhelming that they can’t drive or participate in other normal activities. About half of those who complain to their doctors

about poor sleep end up with a prescription drug. Not only are these unnecessary but they also are habit-forming and can cause side effects, according to sleep researchers in psychiatry and behavioral sciences. It is far better for people to consider what simple changes could be made to improve their sleep — and to understand how sleep patterns change with age. Common — and normal — sleep problems, which plague up to 40% of the elderly, include light sleep, frequent waking, and daytime fatigue. Among older people, there is also a decrease in the deep-sleep stage and an increase in periods of wakefulness during the night. While many seniors complain of poor sleep, relatively few have true sleep disorders and even smaller numbers need commonly prescribed sleep medications. Sleep disorders in the elderly include apnea (a temporary cessation of breathing which can also affect younger people) and pe-

riodic limb movement, which can take the form of periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS) or restless leg syndrome. In this syndrome, the person is gripped by strong urges to move his or her legs repeatedly before sleep, which prevent him or her from falling asleep. Continue reading below... Before a physician can diagnose a sleep disorder, he or she should perform a thorough medical examination, review medications the person is taking, and speak to the person’s spouse or bed partner about their sleeping habits. Sometimes medication is

prescribed, but although these drugs may be useful in the management of [short-term] insomnia, they fail to provide longterm relief from chronic sleep disturbances. Hypnotics [medications] can worsen existing sleep disturbances by inducing drug-dependency insomnia and, when the drug is discontinued after intermediate to long-term use, rebound insomnia and nightmares, experts say. Apnea can be treated by behavior modifications to lessen sleeping on the back, oral appliances that enhance the airway, weight loss, and elimination of medications that depress breathing.

Sometimes respiratory stimulants, continuous positive airway pressure, which is administered through a mask the person wears at night; and surgery are also effective. Treatments for periodic limb movement disorders are less than ideal, according to scientific reports. Although medications can be used, they also cause daytime sedation and have little effect on the leg movements themselves. Returning to cat naps, these include benefits like productivity, a lifting of the spirits and a sharpening of the senses. The advice of taking a nap that mothers sometimes give their children also

reaps benefits for people in their adult lives. Proponents of taking a nap say that the afternoon is the best time of the day to do so. Taking a nap being good for your health is not just a matter of opinion. Scientific research is even beginning to substantiate the benefits of napping. Research is pointing to the fact that taking a nap during the day makes up for a night’s sleep that was bad and insufficient. Certain studies are concluding that taking naps is helpful for usually normal sleepers who are not getting enough hours of sleep every night. These studies don’t yet fully understand the biological reasons behind this phenomena, but they have recorded conclusive results. One study compared the alertness of one group that slept the whole night through and didn’t nap to people who slept less, but then napped. Both groups showed equal levels of alertness. Studies have also established the benefits of the prophylactic nap, where people who have to stay

up late take a two- to fourhour nap before staying up late. Results indicated that this greatly helped their alertness for the next day. While the benefits of napping are verified by research, in some cases, it may not help at all. If you are among two specific groups of people, you should not be taking naps at all, as they may even hurt you. If you are either an insomniac or just endure bouts of depression, you will want to avoid naps in the afternoon. If you are an insomniac, napping during the day could make your sleep at night even worse. If you’re depressed, then napping during the day may even work to worsen your symptoms of depression. Making sure you don’t sleep for more than 90 minutes during your nap is essential. If you do so, you may disturb your body’s internal rhythm, leading to results that are not beneficial. As always, consult with your medico – and if you have a problem don’t just sleep on it! Sweet dreams.

SLEEPING Solutions Study shows memory loss in the elderly is linked to sleep problems LANDMARK research reveals a connection between poor sleep, memory loss and brain deterioration in the elderly. Scientists at the University of California believe their findings will stimulate new initiatives to improve the quality of sleep in elderly people as a means to enhance memory. UC Berkeley neuroscientists discovered the slow brain waves generated during the deep, restorative sleep we typically experience in youth play a key role in transporting memories from the hippocampus – which provides short-term storage for memories — to the prefrontal cortex’s longer term ‘hard drive’. Unfortunately, in older adults, memories may be trapped in the hippocampus due to the poor quality of deep ‘slow wave’ sleep, and are then overwritten by new memories. “What we have discovered is a dysfunctional pathway that helps explain the relationship between brain deterioration, sleep disruption and memory loss as we get older — and with that, a potentially new treatment avenue,” says UC Berkeley sleep researcher Dr Matthew Walker. The findings shed new light on some of the forgetfulness common to the elderly that includes difficulty remembering people’s names. “When we are young, we have deep sleep that helps the brain store and retain new facts and information,” Walker said. “But as we get older, the quality of our sleep deteriorates and prevents those memories from being saved by the brain at night.” Experts say that healthy adults typically spend onequarter of the night in deep, non-rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Slow waves are generated by the brain’s middle frontal lobe. Deterioration of this frontal region of the brain in elderly people is linked to their failure to generate deep sleep, the study found. The discovery that slow waves in the frontal brain help strengthen memories paves the way for therapeutic treatments for memory loss in the elderly, such as transcranial direct current stimulation or pharmaceutical remedies. For example, in an earlier study,

Too hot to sleep? IF a loved one who is a resident at an aged care facility is restless during summer nights, Ron Grunstein, Professor of Sleep Medicine at Sydney Medical School, may be able to help. “Sleep and body control of temperature are intimately connected. Body temperature follows a 24 hour cycle linked with the sleep wake rhythm,” he writes. According to Professor Grunstein, body temperature decreases during the night time sleep phase and rises during the wake phase. Sleep is most likely to occur when core temperature decreases, and much less likely to occur during the rises. He adds the hands and feet play a key role in facilitating sleep as they permit the heated blood from the central body to lose heat to the environment through the skin surface. The sleep hormone melatonin plays an important part of the complex loss of heat through the peripheral parts of the body, Professor Grunstein explains. “At sleep onset, core body temperature falls but peripheral skin temperature rises. But temperature changes become more complex during sleep as our temperature self regulation varies according to sleep stage,” he says. Research has shown how environmental heat can disturb this delicate balance between sleep and body temperature. For instance, an ambient temperature of 22 or 23 degrees Celsius is ideal. Any major variation in this leads to disturbance of sleep with reduced slow wave sleep (a stage of sleep where the brain’s electrical wave activity slows and the brain ‘rests’), and also results in less dreaming sleep (rapid eye movement or REM sleep). As we age, our sleep patterns change. In general, older people sleep less, experience more fragmented sleep, and spend less time in stages 3 & 4 and REM sleep (deep sleep and dream sleep) than younger people. “The clear message is this: if you’re going to make some big decisions during a heatwave, sleep in a carefully controlled air conditioned environment,” Professor Grunstein says. Courtesy: DPSnews.com.au www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

neuroscientists in Germany successfully used electrical stimulation of the brain in young adults to enhance deep sleep and doubled their overnight memory. UC Berkeley researchers will be conducting a similar sleep-enhancing study in older adults to see if it will improve their overnight memory. “Can you jump-start slow wave sleep and help people remember their lives and memories better? It’s an exciting possibility,” says Dr Bryce Mander, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology, lead author of this latest study.

SLEEPING Solutions Obstructive sleep apnoea and the risks

DID you know that Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) may increase your risk of Obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure), insulin resistance and diabetes, stroke, ischaemic heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, mortality? What is obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)? Normally when we are asleep, the muscles in our body relax but our airway stays open, allowing us to breathe normally. However, for some people, the airway doesn’t stay open often because there is pressure from fat around the neck - which stops them breathing (apnoea, pronounced apnee-a) or, if their breathing is only partly blocked, the airflow is reduced (hypopnoea, pronounced hi-pop-neea). This is what doctors call obstructive sleep apnoea. Often, this interruption of a person’s breathing will cause them to wake up repeatedly through the night, gasping for air. The most common sign of obstructive sleep apnoea or hypopnoea is loud, irregular snoring - the sound made as air passes through the narrowed throat and windpipe (the airway) - and long pauses when the person doesn’t seem to be breathing at all. SYMPTOMS IN OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEPAPNOEA Common: •Loud snoring •Excessive daytime sleepiness •Feelings of choking or shortness of breath at night •Restless sleep •Unrefreshing sleep •Changes in personality •Repeti-

tive nocturnal urination Less common: •Morning headaches •Reduced libido •Spouse worried by pauses in breathing •Nocturnal sweating • Rare •Recurrent arousals/ insomnia •Nocturnal cough •Symptomatic oesophageal reflux (heartburn). Is having OSA dangerous? Frequent apnoeas or hypopnoeas mean the body repeatedly doesn’t get enough oxygen and this - and the effort to breathe - can lead to higher blood pressure and heart problems. Patients who already have heart or lung problems are, obviously, most at risk. Anybody who suffers from uncontrolled excessive daytime sleepiness or lack of sleep may be at risk through falling asleep in dangerous situations, such as when driving or operating machinery. Now at participating Amcal Chempro pharmacies on the Gold Coast, your trained sleep apnoea consultant can help diagnose and treat patients with sleep apnoea. Sleep studies can be organised by your Amcal Chempro pharmacy, conducted in the comfort of your own home, and the results sent to qualified sleep doctors for interpretation and development of a treatment plan. From there your Amcal Chempro Chemist can organise the trial, hire or sale of a sleep apnoea machine, masks and any other required equipment, as well as ongoing support for all of you sleep apnoea requirements. For more information contact Burleigh Town Amcal Chempro on 5535 9866.

Sleep Management

IF you’re deprived of sleep, you’ll find it hard to function throughout the day – your energy levels will slump, you won’t be able to concentrate, and you’ll feel grumpy and moody. If this continues, you could risk the health of your immune system, putting you at risk of infections and diseases. The good news is that there’s plenty you can do to help you get a good night’s sleep. “Sleep hygiene” is a term health experts use to describe a healthy sleeping routine. You can improve your sleep hygiene by: • Going to bed at about the same time each night, and getting up at about the same time each day. • Creating a relaxing environment – get the TV and computer out of your bedroom, and try to make sure your bedroom is neither too warm or too cold. • Starting to unwind before bed – drink some comforting warm milk 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime, have a relaxing bath with a few drops of lavender oil, don’t work or watch TV just before you turn in for the night.

• Avoiding overloading your system – don’t eat a heavy meal shortly before bedtime. • Limiting stimulants – enjoy your coffee, sure, but try to limit your caffeine intake to the mornings. • Trying a traditional herbal supplement like Nature’s Own Complete Sleep Advanced containing a mildly sedating herb, such as valerian, hops or zizyphus, that may help to calm your mind and help you to fall asleep – and sleep through the night Nature’s Own Complete Sleep Advanced has a sleep promoting action, providing relief from sleeplessness and insomnia. It assists with a good night’s sleep, by helping you to get to sleep and stay asleep. Helps alleviate stress, a common cause of insomnia and sleeplessness and has a mild sedative action, helping to induce a restful state. ARE you tired of being tired? Do you snore? Are you grumpy and moody? Do you fall asleep at inconvenient times? Is fatigue affecting your lifestyle? Then you may be suffering from a sleep disorder! Sleep Disorders affect up to 20% of the adult population and can significantly increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, mood disorders such as depression, impotence, diabetes, and many more chronic diseases, which is why is it important to be diagnosed if you think you might be suffering.

For years, the only way to diagnose a sleep disorder was to visit a hospital or sleep lab for the night, but honestly, how on earth are you ever going to achieve the same sleep quality in a sleep lab that you would normally achieve at home? Well now there is an alternative, you can have your sleep study done in the comfort and privacy of your own home, and the benefits of home sleep diagnostics versus in-lab diagnostics are vast. The integrity of the results are more attuned to your usual sleep quality as you

Never too old to stay active

A smiling Bill McMullen with just some of his medals.

HE might be 81 but Bill McMullen keeps fit through an active lifestyle that includes the fun of ticking items off a seemingly endless Bucket List. Here’s Bill’s story. Past-President and current member of the Southern Gold Coast 60 & Better program, Bill McMullen moved to Australia in 1988 after 32 years in New Zealand. Bill had kept active by playing basketball and soccer. A member of the Gold Coast Masters Athletics Club for the past 10 years,

Bill says “it was while training at Ashmore Oval that one of my friends mentioned that the Irish Masters Track and Field Championships and the Northern Ireland Masters were both being held in Tullamore, Southern Ireland in August this year. “After nearly 60 years I wanted to compete in Ireland once again, something that was on my Bucket List. As I had to belong to an Irish club, I contacted an old club mate who kindly registered me with the

Northern Belfast Harriers. I had been a Harrier back in the 1950s. “Signing up for both competitions, a Dublin cousin then kindly organised a hire car for me while offering three days accommodation before I headed off to Tullamore and area, about 180 kilometres west of Dublin. “Hammer, Discus, Shot Put, Javelin and Weight for Distance (28 pounds) were my events. Despite rain and delays, I managed to set an Irish record in the Discus and Shot Put and Second Place in the others. “Travelling to Avoca in Wicklow before the start of the Northern Ireland Masters later in August, I visited Fitzgerald’s Pub, yet another Bucket List item, where scenes from the BBC programme Ballykissangel had been filmed. “Afterwards it was on to County Fermangh, where I had been evacuated during WWII, before heading back to Belfast and achieving wins in all five of my events in the 80+ age category.” Congratulations Bill! For information about Southern Gold Coast 60 & Better, celebrating 20 years this year, please phone (07) 5525 6466.

ONE of our favourite cities in the world is Utrecht in Holland. An old university city dating back to pre-Roman times, it has long been a crossroads of humanity and wherever you look, there are traces of that humanity clinging to it ancient buildings and canals. One day, rounding a corner, I almost fell over a massive rock imbedded in the narrow footpath and chained securely to building on the corner. ‘What on earth is this?’ I demanded, hastily regaining my balance. My husband Ben, who’d been born and bred in Utrecht merely shrugged. ‘Dunno...it’s always been there.’ Fortunately for my inquisitive nature, his mother knew the answer. ‘It’s the Devil’s play stone,’ she answered and went on to explain. Back in mediaeval days the citizens discovered that each morning the rock was in a different spot and since it was so massive, they decided it must be moved by the Devil, having a bit of fun at their expense. Since any of his activities are to be discouraged, they chained it to the corner of the nearest building. Apparently the idea worked and the Devil moved on to more tolerant climes. So it remains today, a menace to pedestrians, but a salutary lesson to the Devil not to mess with the locals.

Airport in Texas An aide for a Bush cabinet member once called and asked if they could rent a car in Dallas. When I looked at the reservation, I noticed that they only had a onehour stop-over in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car for just an hour, he said, “I heard Dallas was a big airport and we will need a car to drive between the gates to save time”! Well ‘Hello’ there! WHILE touring Ireland we stopped at a pretty thatched pub in the country. A Day in Rome

BUDGET or BOUTIQUE

“WE need an angel!” Our onward, flight had been delayed and we couldn’t bear to waste a day. So here we were, seven brightly dressed tourists lost in a sea of drab commuters somewhere between the airport and the city of Rome. And I was responsible for the escapade. I was beginning to feel more than a little disorientated and aware that we might just be lost in the spaghetti of the Italian railway system. Already we had made erratic progress through money changing, and travelling by bus to a nearby station. There we floundered through the ticket dispensing machines with much waving of hands and incomprehensible exchanges with those we pressured for help. We had changed trains twice in the labyrinth of underground stations and now our initial boldness and enthusiasm was wearing thin as we contemplated the fact we could be lost travelling in a foreign city. The door slid open at the next station and the rush of new arrivals pushed us closer together. “Where are we?” I spoke out loud, while searching for the name of the station. “Are you Australians?” A new arrival interjected as she joined the crush near the door. For a moment we were stunned. Were we hearing things?

Someone who understood us, perhaps she was the angel we needed! It was better to think so than to to never know for sure. Our new found friend was however a travel agent visiting Rome to research the tourist attractions, a city she already knew quite well. What a day we had, our own off duty tour guide showing us the sights and sounds of Rome. Lunch time found us seated under the vine clad trellis of a sunbathed outdoor restaurant not far from the Spanish steps, but definitely not the usual tourist beat. Rome down to the last curl of garlic laden pasta. Eventually having squeezed the last drop out of an extraordinary day, we headed with accomplished ease back the way we had come: Three trains, one bus and a long walk. There was the airport hotel, just where we had left it. In a short space of time we had graduated from being accidental tourists to authentic travellers thanks to an angel. Beverley Souster

OVER the last 10 years European River Cruising has become The Dream Holiday. The concept is wonderful – unpack once and travel the ancient highways of Europe. In April I was delighted to travel with Uniworld in France. I also managed to sneak onto several other ships to get a feel for what they offer to passengers so that I can explain to you what these vessels are really like. I was surprised how long you are in port each day with the ships sailing mainly at night so that you wake up with a new region to explore. However when you travel through an area of scenic beauty you have time to sit up on the sun deck as you sail past small villages and craggy cliffs, fields aglow with the vibrant yellow of rape seed crops or the gnarly vines of the wineries which line the shores. When in port enjoy wandering the cobblestone streets, a memorable concert in a castle, explore historical villages, play a game of petanque or become acquainted with the appealing lifestyle and heritage of this vibrant modern country which is proud of its history. It is surprising how diverse this country is, as you cruise through the Bordeaux region the chef visits the local markets daily selecting the freshest produce and wonderful wines. Uniworld was excellent. The crew are marvellous, the cabin appointments include L’Occitaine amenities and crisp white linen sheets,a cashmere throw to keep you cosy when it’s cool and their eye for detail is excellent. The meals are delicious and they are designed to reflect the area you are travelling through along with wines that match. Offering an all-inclusive tariff there is no need to tip (yeah!) and all beverages, meals and just about all

shore excursions are included. As a Francophile I have been fortunate to travel several times to France and I can really recommend the destination to anyone fascinated with history, fabulous food and wine, a sense of style and beautiful countryside. This trip combines the world famous Bordeaux region in Western France with delightful journey to the South. Sit back and enjoy the high speed TGV train as you travel from one part of the country to another. One of my favourite regions is Provence. In the delightful city of Avignon you round one corner to see the imposing Popes Palace; around another corner you marvel at the modern vertical garden at the entrance to Les Halles (the local food market) and yet around another corner rest your weary feet in the town square watching the world go by as you sip on a glass of chilled local rose. Every day brings a new experience and places to discover. Of course you will spend some time in Paris; you can never have enough time in this fabulous centre of culture. Make sure to sip a coffee at a left bank café or let us arrange a Segway tour from the Eiffel tower to the Louvre – one of the most fun things I have ever done. Walk the steps up to Montmartre and watch the artists at work. Spend an evening at the Moulin Rouge. Wander the gardens of Versailles or discover the roads less explored by tourists. Near the Musee D’Orsay you will find Rodin’s gallery – great artwork and a lovely café. This delightful combination of guided touring and a luxury river cruise will give you a wonderful insight into France. You can combine this trip with other areas of Europe or stopovers en route. With a planned launch date of late 2014, the hub will identify issues with travel providers, products and services, and bring these issues to the attention of governments, regulators and industry. CHOICE reached agreement with state and territory ministers in July, with the project to receive funding of $2.8m over four-and-ahalf years, provided from the now-defunct Travel Compensation Fund. This matches the funding already provided to the Australian Federation of Travel Agents to set up a voluntary selfaccreditation scheme from 1 July 2014. Funding has also been provided to state and

territory governments to raise awareness about the changes to the travel industry. Key features of the CHOICE proposal are: • Ensuring there is a strong consumer voice in the Australian travel market, identifying emerging consumer issues, and advocating for solutions. • Publishing and promoting independent advice for Australian travellers on their consumer rights and protections, including common issues around travel agents and other providers. • Providing unbiased reviews and how-to guides for navigating consumer travel products and services, including travel insurance. CHOICE was one of several groups invited by the nation’s consumer affairs ministers to apply for funding to establish a consumer voice in the travel industry. This followed the decision of ministers to abolish the Travel Compensation Fund, which since 1987 was part of licensing arrangements for Australian-based travel agents. The fund also paid more than $60

www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

million in compensation to consumers left high and dry when agents went bust, such as when a Sydney-based cruise company went into administration in 2012. While we recognise the travel industry is evolving, CHOICE advocated for reforming the fund rather than abolishing it. We also argued that if the fund were abolished, dedicated resources should be provided for consumer protection. When ministers decided to abolish the fund anyway, and to provide funding to the travel industry to set up a voluntary selfaccreditation scheme, we argued that comparable amount should be provided to

help consumers. Article reprinted courtesy of CHOICE

Take a Rail Tour with the train buffs THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. Walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle, waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal departure and steams out of the platform. Like the sound of the above ? The Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) is about to enter its 58th year of proudly operating rail tours. Both steam and diesel hauled excursion trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic tour in travel of a bygone era – travelling in style in the heritage carriages. Not only will Santa be celebrating the arrival of Christmas - the

Australian Railway Historical Qld Division will celebrate its 1000th tour in December so join Santa aboard the double headed Christmas Excursion on Saturday 6th December – yes two steam locomotives will be hauling this very special tour to Fisherman Islands and Box Flat and yes there is such a thing as a free lunch – it is included in your fare on this celebration trip. What a great sight and sound this will be as the two great “Iron Horses” steam out of Roma Street with 250 passengers aboard the 11 heritage of which some date back to 1910. 2015 sees 150 years of railways in our Sunshine State and there will be special steam train excursions running to many destinations during the year. Join us for the Queensland Carousel Tour departing Brisbane on 13th February by coach via the inland route to Far North Queensland. The highlight of this tour will be the return journey by steam all the way from Mareeba and Cairns to Brisbane. What a great

way to see the great scenery our state has to offer with overnight stops at Monto, Capella, Charters Towers and Yungaburra on the northbound leg and Cairns(two nights), Townsville, Mackay. Rockhampton and Bundaberg on the return leg. Fancy an escape to the Granit Belt aboard the Summit Express in March? This two day tour by Silver Bullet Rail Motor takes you through some great Southern Downs scenery on the way to visiting some wineries in The Summit and Stanthorpe regions. Sunshine Express Rail Tours head interstate for the Great Circle Tour in May – a tri sate tour by train from Sydney to Sydney via Melbourne, Adelaide, Broken Hill and Parkes. Sunshine Express Rail Tours look forward to welcoming you aboard, early booking is recommended for all tours; phone our office on 3252 1759 between 10am and 3.00pm Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays for a brochure. As important, if not more so, in the past 12 months they have provided over 2,500 hours of volunteer work including home, hospital and respite care visits. Now the VSC is looking for help. The VSC is currently run by two paid staff and over 20 volunteers, all of whom are Veterans. Alice Hornby is one of those volunteers and has been at the centre for over four years during which time she has made steadfast friendships. “The reasons I love working at the VSC is the satisfaction I get from making others, less fortunate than myself, happy. The people I work with are so friendly

and being here boosts my self-esteem and makes life worthwhile.” Says Alice The main challenge for the VSC in recent times is connecting with younger Veterans. Many current service and ex-service personnel are unaware of their entitlements, with some believing entitlements are not meant for them. The VSC is open five days a week and they encourage any Veteran to come along and speak with them to better understand what assistance is available for them and their families. WELL-known community supporter and advocate for the less fortunate, Jenny Crewes, recently hosted a successful

fundraiser in her Southport office in aid of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia. High Tea for Hamlin raised “a generous $850”,

as Jenny was “very pleased to report”, money that will make a “huge difference” in the life of at least one Ethiopian

woman suffering from the medical condition fistula. Many High Tea for Hamlin events were held across the country in September, with over 80% of the $200,000 target raised so far. Donations are still being gratefully accepted. Australian Dr Catherine Hamlin AC, author of The Hospital by the River, and her late husband Dr Reginald Hamlin, originally from New Zealand, founded the Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Fistula Hospital in 1974. Expansion has since taken place to include five regional centres; the Hamlin College of Midwives, and Desta Mender (Joy Village), a farm and training centre for long-term fistula patients.

Fistula results from “agonising obstructed labour” during childbirth, well explained on the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia website http:// hamlin.org.au/. The newborn child often dies and the mother suffers “horrific internal damage” as well as crippling social isolation. Jenny Crewes explained that “the cost of an Obstetric Fistula Operation and care for the patient during her recovery is in the region of $650”, free-of-cost to the patient although the patient must find her own way to the hospital’s doors, often an added hardship that can include long walks through remote bushland plus uncomfortable bus rides. A Companion of the Or-

der of Australia (AC), Dr Catherine Hamlin, now 90, has also been awarded the ANZAC Peace Prize and the coveted Gold Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons, and twice has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Jenny looks forward
