IT’S the hairiest month of the year and men around the country are preparing their upper lips for their prickly journey ahead as they shave-down to mark the start of Movember.

Tomorrow marks the twelfth time Aussie men will let their Mos do the talking as they embark on the adventure to change the face of men’s health. While men have come a long way since the first Movember in 2003, one in three men still don’t take their health seriously and the same number are unaware of what they need to do to stay healthy, highlighting the need for the Mo to remain strong and keep growing.

On the other side of the globe, the Australian Cricket Team is bound for moustache glory, dusting off their razors to start the month cleanshaven.

Fast bowler and proud Mo Bro Mitchell Johnson knows all too well the power of the Mo and is gearing up for another outstanding Mo season after his stellar performance on and off the pitch last year.

community news Over 50s outraged by Commonwealth Employment Department

PEOPLE over 50 desperate to find work in an ageist employment market are greatly offended by claims made by a Commonwealth government department that older people are happily retiring on the dole.

COTA Australia said the claims, made in the department’s submission to the Senate Education and Employment Legislation Committee Inquiry says: “it is no longer acceptable for 55-59 year old job seekers to effectively retire on Newstart while undertaking a bit of voluntary or part-time work.”

COTA CE Ian Yates said the commentary completely ignores the fact that if you

lose your job in your 50s it is extremely difficult to find another, which is why there are increasing numbers of older people on the Newstart Allowance. “This is an outrageous slur on the efforts of thousands of older Australians who are desperately looking for work and yet constantly overlooked in favour of younger job seekers,” Mr Yates said.

“It’s bad enough that many people over 50 have to suffer the humiliation of multiple knock-backs by employers, despite their years of experience and clear ability to undertake the work. Now they have to put up with the Depart-

ment of Employment laying the boot in too.

“The Department should shift their focus from going out of their way to offend older Australian job seekers and concentrate on ways to reduce the high incidence of age discrimination and look at ways to stimulate a jobs market for older people. “The evidence about age discrimination is clear and irrefutable, as Age Discrimination Commissioner Susan Ryan has noted, and presents a most disturbing picture for many older job seekers.

“The government’s new Restart wage subsidy recognises that incentives are needed to encourage

employers to hire older workers – and more measures are needed.”

Mr Yates said COTA and other advocacy groups had been calling for an increase in the Newstart allowance for years since people living on Newstart find it impossible to make ends meet and keep their heads above the poverty line. “It is ridiculous to suggest that older job seekers just want to spend their time doing a bit of voluntary work while living on the paltry income provided

by Newstart.

“Given the choice, older people want to have their wisdom, skills and experience recognised by being

fully employed in meaningful paid work as they have been for the rest of their life.

“At the moment the Federal Government is trying

to increase the pension age to 70. That means if you lost your job at 50 and struggled to find another you could spend up to 20

years on Newstart.

“I guarantee you not one older person is striving for that.”

Age Pension would be indexed by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) only which would mean that the value of the Age Pension would decrease over time.

Currently, the pension increases twice a year in line with the higher of the CPI or the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI). It is then benchmarked against a percentage of Male Total Average Weekly Earnings (MATWE). National Seniors has been urging the government to ditch the changes to Age Pension indexation and to continue to use the current indexation method to ensure pensions keep up with costs of living and enable older Australians to maintain a decent standard of living. National Seniors will be closely following the Social Security Bills as they progress through Parliament.

It’s been known for many years that photoelectric smoke alarms usually respond faster to smouldering fires, while ionisation alarms respond faster to flaming fires. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services recommend that all residential accommodation be fitted with photoelectric smoke alarms.

A Smoke Alarm Subsidy Scheme is available if you are deaf or hearing impaired, and have a current pensioner concession card.It is funded by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and is managed by Deaf Services Queensland.

Low Carbon Living starts at home booklet now available online HOUSEHOLDERS’ Options to Protect the Environment Inc. (HOPE) is pleased to announce the launch of the national edition of the popular Low Carbon Living starts at home booklet. WW1 Centenary Display Centre opens A WW1 Centenary Display Centre has been opened by the Nerang RSL Sub Branch in historic Preece House, Bischoff Park, Nerang.

The Centre will operate between 2014 and 2018 to mark the 100th anniversaries of the start and finish of WW1. Displays will change annually to reflect the campaigns that took place during the four-year conflict.

Manned by volunteers, the not-for-profit Centre seeks donations of WW1 memorabilia and related items. Most of the initial display, including a simulated WW1 trench with added special effects, was provided by students of local schools.

Located at 48 Nerang Street, the WW1 Centenary Display Centre is open Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sundays 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Members of the public of all ages are welcome. Admission is free.

Oscar Wong is 16 years of age and currently in year 10 at Emmanuel College.

He has just achieved his L.Mus.A award with distinction and most recently has won the Most Outstanding Performer’s Award at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod and performed in the 2014 Musicale at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. South Tweed Computer classes THE computer club is located in the South Tweed Sports Club 4 Minjungbal Drive South Tweed in a great air conditioned environment. Don’t book a scammer’s holiday

THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is warning consumers to watch out for travel scams. The ACCC has received 1,650 complaints about travel scams this year, with $100,000 reported lost. Most complainants were contacted by phone and many were offered holiday vouchers for $2,000 or $3,000. Others were sold fake trips to Florida or the Bahamas including tickets to theme

parks or cruises at greatly discounted rates.

“While you are making plans for a hard-earned break, scammers are plotting to steal your hardearned dollars,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard warned. Simply searching online for a holiday can alert scammers that you are a potential target and they won’t hesitate to approach you with travel vouchers or offers that

always turn out to be too good to be true. “Watch out for these fraudsters cold calling and announcing that you’ve won a travel prize, ranging from discount accommodation vouchers to whole holiday packages. To redeem the prize, you will be asked to provide personal information such as your credit card and drivers’ licence details before they can send it to you,” Ms Rickard said. “Sometimes

scammers will provide authentic-looking tickets and itineraries but when it comes time to travel, these documents are useless and the business cannot be contacted.”

Scammers have also recently been targeting homes and businesses with a fraudulent phone message from QANTAS or Virgin, which claims they have won a ‘travel prize’ or ‘credit points’ typically $999 - towards

their next holiday. In order to redeem the credit, you have to answer several questions, including handing over credit card details so that the ‘prize’ can be processed.

WITH the help of over 50 local school students, the Nerang RSL sub-branch has now completed an interactive replica trench as part of its World War 1 (WW1) Centenary Exhibition, at Preece House, Nerang.

Located underneath the historically significant Queenslander, just 50 metres from the Nerang RSL Club, the trench display features sound, lighting and smoke effects reminiscent of the conditions the digger’s experienced.

Project director and assistant treasurer of the Nerang RSL sub-branch Mark Swain says visitors can expect to hear the sounds of shelling and explosions, with carefully scripted dialogue that booms through the speakers in the confined, dark space under the property.

“The sound and atmosphere in the trench display tell a story, starting with general mundane chatter, which develops as chaos ensues,” he said.

“You hear shouting as the sound of gunfire intensifies and when a soldier is hit, his comrades rush to his aid.

WHAT if you missed your granddaughter’s first word, or the gist of a speech by your son at his wedding? Thousands of Australians get by on piecing together conversations and missing important moments that result in lasting emotional impact, research by Australian Hearing has revealed.

The research has identified more than 87 per cent of Australians with hearing loss struggle to follow conversations and half of all sufferers (48%) and their loved ones (53%) believe hearing loss reduces the quality of communication by limiting the sharing of thoughts and feelings in conversation. Principal Audiologist at Australian Hearing, Janette Thorburn, said this could compromise quality of life and relationships for the sufferer.

“Simple things we take for granted like chatting with grandchildren or partaking in conversations can be challenging for people suffering with hearing loss. It’s as if they never get to fully experience these moments, often missing words and sentiment” said Ms Thorburn.

However, for the majority of untreated sufferers it is a burden often experienced unnecessarily - many people have hearing loss which can be managed effectively with proper diagnosis and treatment. Ms Thorburn said “people have a natural inclination to put up with or just ignore their hearing difficulties rather than take action.” The research found only 59 per cent of untreated sufferers had ever had a hearing test and of those who had had been formally tested, an average of 12.2 years had passed since their last test. “People who seek help earlier on are much more likely to get more benefit from them than those who put up with hearing loss for years before seeking help” said Ms Thorburn.

community news Tread the boards to see nature’s showstoppers ANYONE who enjoys visiting the Gold Coast’s largest mainland coastal conservation reserve, Coombabah Lakelands, off Raintree Glen, can now experience the park’s diverse flora and fauna from a different perspective along a new boardwalk and recreational trail.

Located off Myola Court, Coombabah, the recentlycompleted 300-metre long boardwalk adjoins the Coombabah Creek tributary and has been built with both the environment and ongoing costs in mind. It uses eco-smart materials with a lifespan exceeding 50 years, more than three times that of the previous boardwalk. The latest structure was also carefully constructed to minimise the impact on the marine environment.

Councillor Cameron Caldwell said the new boardwalk is a worthwhile investment by the City on behalf of both residents and visitors.

FOR the 12th year running, the Swell Sculpture Festival was held in September at Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast.

This year 64 sculptures, spread over one kilometre of sand and beachside parkland, awed and wowed thousands of visitors over ten days. Viewing the individual works, some having travelled distances from Europe and South Korea, was an experience in itself; actually meeting a participating artist was an added bonus.

Adriaan Vanderlugt, born in Holland during WWII and raised in Canada, has lived in the Whitsundays, Queensland for over 35 years with Denise, his Australian wife, partner and fellow professional artist.

Swell 2014 marked the sixth time Adriaan had entered a sculpture in this internationally-recognised event with Hatchlings, a clutch of 110 baby turtles handcrafted from recycled copper, a tribute to the trials and tribulations faced by these marine creatures from birth. Centrelink changes could affect you CHANGES to be introduced by Centrelink could have a permanently detrimental effect on retirees’ pension entitlements. This claim was recently made by Mr Robert Grover, Gold Coast President of Australians in Retirement. Many retirees currently receive a Centrelink pension and also have money invested in superannuation in pension mode. In assessing the retiree’s pension entitlement, Centrelink currently appliers a relatively favourable formula to the retiree’s superannuation. This applies regardless of whether your superannuation is in a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF), an Industry Fund, a retail super fund or any other superannuation structure.

However this method of favourable assessment will change on 1st January 2015 and in many cases will result in a reduction in pension payments. Some pensioners, if subject to the change, may lose their pension entitlement completely.

Regrettably a change in a pensioner’s circumstances at some time in the future will trigger the new form of assessment. And these “triggering” changes can be somewhat innocuous. Some examples are: • If your super is in pension mode with XYZ Industry Fund and you change it to ABC Industry Fund to get a better return • If your super is in accumulation mode in your own SMSF and at any time in the future you change it to pension mode • If your spouse’s super passes to you on their death but they have not nominated you as a reversionary pensioner.

• If you temporarily become ineligible for Centrelink (eg leaving Australia for an extended holiday) but then re-apply at a later date.

The changes that will be introduced on 1st January 2015 can be quite complex and they could have a permanently detrimental effect on a retiree’sCentrelink entitlement. This issue will be fully explained and discussed by a Centrelink Financial Information Service Officer at the next meeting of Australians in Retirement. The new early detection blood-test could predict these changes and a person’s risk of developing AD much earlier than is currently possible.

The blood test has the potential to improve pre-

diction for AD to 91 per cent accuracy. However, this needs to be further tested in a larger population across three to five years, due to AD being a progressive disease.

In an initial trial group using the blood test, one in five healthy participants with no memory complaints tested positive. On further medical investigation using brain-imaging techniques, these patients showed signs of degeneration in the brain resembling AD features.

Lead researcher Professor Andrew Hill from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Bio21 Institute said the blood test would sig-

nificantly advance efforts to find new treatments for the degenerative disease and could lead to better preventative measures prior to diagnoses.

“This blood test would be crucial to the development of therapeutic and preventative drugs for AD. It can be used to identify patients for clinical drugs and monitoring improvement on treatment,” he said.

Regular readers of the Seniors Newspaper may remember a 2012 article about Neville that told how he had constructed an expansive replica—out of seemingly nothing—of the Brisbane Sisters of Mercy St Vincent’s Home for Children where Neville and his five brothers and sisters had lived in the late 1950s/early ’60s. The model was later generously donated by Neville and his wife Gloria to Mercy Family Services.

Working out of his Southport garage-cumworkshop, Neville has now created four modelsized Tall Ships, “not to scale”, vessels made from a mix of mostly old red cedar hand railing, string, popsicle and chopsticks, meat skewers, doweling,

Spending many hours on such detailed work would be a challenge for most

people but, surprisingly, it is even more so for the quietly-spoken Neville. In 2004 he was diagnosed with a brain tumour— prolactinoma, disease of the pituitary gland—after a discectomy (surgical removal of a herniated disc) in 2003. With little concept of time, it’s Gloria, Neville’s wife of almost 46 years, who confirms that the largest Tall Ship took

him about three to four months to assemble, with six to eight weeks spent on each of the smaller ships. Neville is a determined man who focuses on the positive.

Neville and Gloria share three children, Tammy, Darcy and Nicole, plus grandchildren Brandon, 15, and Ethan, 13.

Welcome to tick season A tick check should be part of your daily routine if you own a cat or dog.

Although most ticks are found around the head and neck of the animal as well as inside the ears, they can end up anywhere on the body. It is especially important to search longhaired dogs very thoroughly between the eyes and the end of the nose. The most reliable way to locate the ticks is to systematically run your fingers through your cat or dog’s coat. If the head is left in, don’t worry as the tick will die and inject no more poison. Always assume there is more than one tick and continue your systematic search.

The paralysis tick injects a toxin into its host dog or cat as it feeds. Normally, cats show more resistance to this poison than dogs, but if affected the signs are similar for both. Increased body temperature due to either hot weather or exercise will exacerbate symptoms.

If left to run its course, a case of tick poisoning goes through three stages.

Early signs are a change in voice, weakness in the back legs and vomiting, followed by panting, progressing to loud breathing, even grunting noises. As signs of poisoning progress, the animals become unable to stand, breathing becomes exaggerated and difficult and death follows quite quickly.

Even when you find a tick and remove it, your pet isn’t out of the woods. There’s a very good chance the tick could have left a residue of poison under the skin which will then be slowly absorbed. Make sure you see your vet at the earliest opportunity.

This can be a very traumatic time for your pet. Clearly, preventing tick paralysis is a much safer and cheaper alternative than treating the condition once your animal has begun to suffer its effects.

AUTO Business Check the tyres ... but check your health first before you drive north with the grey nomads HOSPITALS in North Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia’s north are being put under strain by travelling retirees who require treatment as they head north for the winter, doctors say.

Thousands of southerners hit the highways in caravans and campers at this time of year in search of winter sun, earning themselves the nickname ‘grey nomads’.

Most are from southern states, but many hundreds of Brisbane and regional Queenslanders make the trek north.

However, doctors say many of them are heading off without adequate health checks and medication, and end up clogging up the health system in small northern towns.

Popular areas such as Queensland’s Sunshine Coast say the influx of heat-seeking visitors from the south is putting a strain on emergency departments.

A Nambour General Hospital spokesman, for example, said winter meant patients came with different diseases, the most common being respiratory illnesses.

He says patient-stays in the colder months were typically longer than during summer, because people took longer to recover.

“We notice a lot of people who have a lot of medical conditions move up from the southern states because they can’t handle their winter,” he said. “We get that load of people, which adds to our number of people to deal with here.”

Rob Whitehead, a representative of the Rural Doctors Association, says the annual migration north by older travellers increases demand for

“I think it’s great that people can get to see a very special part of Australia, but it does put an added strain on health services that are already over-stretched at times,” he said.

“Before we come away, we make sure we have our annual check-ups, we go to our GPs and make sure everything’s done, and we fill our scripts if we need to.”

Good night’s sleep should be more than just a dream WHAT do cats and nannies have in common?

So, are cat naps and nannie naps good for you?

Taking a nap during the day can actually have good benefits for your health. Many people who regularly treat themselves to short naps claim they come with benefits.

Many seniors suffer from sleep deprivation, which can lead to poor performance and attitude during the day. Because of sleepiness during the day, some are more unproductive and irritable than they should be, and more prone to avoidable accidents than they want to be.

Taking a nap can easily fix these issues in a lot of cases.

For many older folks, a good night’s sleep is but a dream; they have trouble falling asleep and awaken after only a few hours. Their daytime fatigue may be so overwhelming that they can’t drive or participate in other normal activities.

About half of those who complain to their doctors

about poor sleep end up with a prescription drug.

Not only are these unnecessary but they also are habit-forming and can cause side effects, according to sleep researchers in psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

It is far better for people to consider what simple changes could be made to improve their sleep — and to understand how sleep patterns change with age.

Common — and normal — sleep problems, which plague up to 40% of the elderly, include light sleep, frequent waking, and daytime fatigue.

Among older people, there is also a decrease in the deep-sleep stage and an increase in periods of wakefulness during the night.

While many seniors complain of poor sleep, relatively few have true sleep disorders and even smaller numbers need commonly prescribed sleep medications. Sleep disorders in the elderly include apnea (a temporary cessation of breathing which can also affect younger people) and pe-

riodic limb movement, which can take the form of periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS) or restless leg syndrome. In this syndrome, the person is gripped by strong urges to move his or her legs repeatedly before sleep, which prevent him or her from falling asleep.

Before a physician can diagnose a sleep disorder, he or she should perform a thorough medical examination, review medications the person is taking, and speak to the person’s spouse or bed partner about their sleeping habits.

Sometimes medication is

prescribed, but although these drugs may be useful in the management of [short-term] insomnia, they fail to provide longterm relief from chronic sleep disturbances.

Hypnotics [medications] can worsen existing sleep disturbances by inducing drug-dependency insomnia and, when the drug is discontinued after intermediate to long-term use, rebound insomnia and nightmares, experts say.

Apnea can be treated by behavior modifications to lessen sleeping on the back, oral appliances that enhance the airway, weight loss, and elimination of medications that depress breathing.

Sometimes respiratory stimulants, continuous positive airway pressure, which is administered through a mask the person wears at night; and surgery are also effective.

Treatments for periodic limb movement disorders are less than ideal, according to scientific reports.

Although medications can be used, they also cause daytime sedation and have little effect on the leg movements themselves.

Returning to cat naps, these include benefits like productivity, a lifting of the spirits and a sharpening of the senses.

The advice of taking a nap that mothers sometimes give their children also

reaps benefits for people in their adult lives. Proponents of taking a nap say that the afternoon is the best time of the day to do so. Taking a nap being good for your health is not just a matter of opinion. Scientific research is even beginning to substantiate the benefits of napping.

Research is pointing to the fact that taking a nap during the day makes up for a night’s sleep that was bad and insufficient.

Certain studies are concluding that taking naps is helpful for usually normal sleepers who are not getting enough hours of sleep every night.

These studies don’t yet fully understand the biological reasons behind this phenomena, but they have recorded conclusive results. One study compared the alertness of one group that slept the whole night through and didn’t nap to people who slept less, but then napped.

Both groups showed equal levels of alertness.

Studies have also established the benefits of the prophylactic nap, where people who have to stay

up late take a two- to fourhour nap before staying up late. Results indicated that this greatly helped their alertness for the next day.

While the benefits of napping are verified by research, in some cases, it may not help at all. If you are among two specific groups of people, you should not be taking naps at all, as they may even hurt you.

If you are either an insomniac or just endure bouts of depression, you will want to avoid naps in the afternoon. If you are an insomniac, napping during the day could make your sleep at night even worse.

If you’re depressed, then napping during the day may even work to worsen your symptoms of depression. Making sure you don’t sleep for more than 90 minutes during your nap is essential. If you do so, you may disturb your body’s internal rhythm, leading to results that are not beneficial.

As always, consult with your medico – and if you have a problem don’t just sleep on it!

SLEEPING Solutions Study shows memory loss in the elderly is linked to sleep problems LANDMARK research reveals a connection between poor sleep, memory loss and brain deterioration in the elderly.

Scientists at the University of California believe their findings will stimulate new initiatives to improve the quality of sleep in elderly people as a means to enhance memory.

UC Berkeley neuroscientists discovered the slow brain waves generated during the deep, restorative sleep we typically experience in youth play a key role in transporting memories from the hippocampus – which provides short-term storage for memories — to the prefrontal cortex’s longer term ‘hard drive’.

Unfortunately, in older adults, memories may be trapped in the hippocampus due to the poor quality of deep ‘slow wave’ sleep, and are then overwritten by new memories.

“What we have discovered is a dysfunctional pathway that helps explain the relationship between brain deterioration, sleep disruption and memory loss as we get older — and with that, a potentially new treatment avenue,” says UC Berkeley sleep researcher Dr Matthew Walker.

The findings shed new light on some of the forgetfulness common to the elderly that includes difficulty remembering people’s names.

“When we are young, we have deep sleep that helps the brain store and retain new facts and information,” Walker said. “But as we get older, the quality of our sleep deteriorates and prevents those memories from being saved by the brain at night.”

Experts say that healthy adults typically spend onequarter of the night in deep, non-rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Slow waves are generated by the brain’s middle frontal lobe. Deterioration of this frontal region of the brain in elderly people is linked to their failure to generate deep sleep, the study found.

The discovery that slow waves in the frontal brain help strengthen memories paves the way for therapeutic treatments for memory loss in the elderly, such as transcranial direct current stimulation or pharmaceutical remedies. For example, in an earlier study,

Too hot to sleep?

IF a loved one who is a resident at an aged care facility is restless during summer nights, Ron Grunstein, Professor of Sleep Medicine at Sydney Medical School, may be able to help.

“Sleep and body control of temperature are intimately connected. Body temperature follows a 24 hour cycle linked with the sleep wake rhythm,” he writes.

According to Professor Grunstein, body temperature decreases during the night time sleep phase and rises during the wake phase.

Sleep is most likely to occur when core temperature decreases, and much less likely to occur during the rises.

He adds the hands and feet play a key role in facilitating sleep as they permit the heated blood from the central body to lose heat to the environment through the skin surface.

The sleep hormone melatonin plays an important part of the complex loss of heat through the peripheral parts of the body, Professor Grunstein explains.

“At sleep onset, core body temperature falls but peripheral skin temperature rises. But temperature changes become more complex during sleep as our temperature self regulation varies according to sleep stage,” he says.

Research has shown how environmental heat can disturb this delicate balance between sleep and body temperature. For instance, an ambient temperature of 22 or 23 degrees Celsius is ideal. Any major variation in this leads to disturbance of sleep with reduced slow wave sleep (a stage of sleep where the brain’s electrical wave activity slows and the brain ‘rests’), and also results in less dreaming sleep (rapid eye movement or REM sleep).

As we age, our sleep patterns change. In general, older people sleep less, experience more fragmented sleep, and spend less time in stages 3 & 4 and REM sleep (deep sleep and dream sleep) than younger people. “The clear message is this: if you’re going to make some big decisions during a heatwave, sleep in a carefully controlled air conditioned environment,” Professor Grunstein says.

neuroscientists in Germany successfully used electrical stimulation of the brain in young adults to enhance deep sleep and doubled their overnight memory.

UC Berkeley researchers will be conducting a similar sleep-enhancing study in older adults to see if it will improve their overnight memory.

Never too old to stay active

A smiling Bill McMullen with just some of his medals.

HE might be 81 but Bill McMullen keeps fit through an active lifestyle that includes the fun of ticking items off a seemingly endless Bucket List.

Here’s Bill’s story.

Past-President and current member of the Southern Gold Coast 60 & Better program, Bill McMullen moved to Australia in 1988 after 32 years in New Zealand. Bill had kept active by playing basketball and soccer.

A member of the Gold Coast Masters Athletics Club for the past 10 years,

Bill says “it was while training at Ashmore Oval that one of my friends mentioned that the Irish Masters Track and Field Championships and the Northern Ireland Masters were both being held in Tullamore, Southern Ireland in August this year.

“After nearly 60 years I wanted to compete in Ireland once again, something that was on my Bucket List.

As I had to belong to an Irish club, I contacted an old club mate who kindly registered me with the

Northern Belfast Harriers.

I had been a Harrier back in the 1950s.

“Signing up for both competitions, a Dublin cousin then kindly organised a hire car for me while offering three days accommodation before I headed off to Tullamore and area, about 180 kilometres west of Dublin.

“Hammer, Discus, Shot Put, Javelin and Weight for Distance (28 pounds) were my events. Despite rain and delays, I managed to set an Irish record in the Discus and Shot Put and Second Place in the others.

“Travelling to Avoca in Wicklow before the start of the Northern Ireland Masters later in August, I visited Fitzgerald’s Pub, yet another Bucket List item, where scenes from the BBC programme Ballykissangel had been filmed.

“Afterwards it was on to County Fermangh, where I had been evacuated during WWII, before heading back to Belfast and achieving wins in all five of my events in the 80+ age category.”

ONE of our favourite cities in the world is Utrecht in Holland. An old university city dating back to pre-Roman times, it has long been a crossroads of humanity and wherever you look, there are traces of that humanity clinging to it ancient buildings and canals.

One day, rounding a corner, I almost fell over a massive rock imbedded in the narrow footpath and chained securely to building on the corner. ‘What on earth is this?’ I demanded, hastily regaining my balance. My husband Ben, who’d been born and bred in Utrecht merely shrugged. ‘Dunno...it’s always been there.’

Fortunately for my inquisitive nature, his mother knew the answer. ‘It’s the Devil’s play stone,’ she answered and went on to explain.

Back in mediaeval days the citizens discovered that each morning the rock was in a different spot and since it was so massive, they decided it must be moved by the Devil, having a bit of fun at their expense. Since any of his activities are to be discouraged, they chained it to the corner of the nearest building. Apparently the idea worked and the Devil moved on to more tolerant climes.

So it remains today, a menace to pedestrians, but a salutary lesson to the Devil not to mess with the locals.

Concentrating on taking a photo I heard this loud gutterall sound and proceeded to jump and ran onto the road to the amusement of everyone, including patrons in the pub, only to discover a very friendly donkey peering over the hedge just waiting to say hello!

A Day in Rome

“WE need an angel!”

Our onward, flight had been delayed and we couldn’t bear to waste a day.

So here we were, seven brightly dressed tourists lost in a sea of drab commuters somewhere between the airport and the city of Rome. And I was responsible for the escapade. I was beginning to feel more than a little disorientated and aware that we might just be lost in the spaghetti of the Italian railway system. Already we had made erratic progress through money changing, and travelling by bus to a nearby station. There we floundered through the ticket dispensing machines with much waving of hands and incomprehensible exchanges with those we pressured for help.

We had changed trains twice in the labyrinth of underground stations and now our initial boldness and enthusiasm was wearing thin as we contemplated the fact we could be lost travelling in a foreign city.

The door slid open at the next station and the rush of new arrivals pushed us closer together. “Where are we?” I spoke out loud, while searching for the name of the station.

“Are you Australians?” A new arrival interjected as she joined the crush near the door.

For a moment we were stunned. Were we hearing things?

Someone who understood us, perhaps she was the angel we needed! It was better to think so than to to never know for sure. Our new found friend was however a travel agent visiting Rome to research the tourist attractions, a city she already knew quite well. What a day we had, our own off duty tour guide showing us the sights and sounds of Rome.

Lunch time found us seated under the vine clad trellis of a sunbathed outdoor restaurant not far from the Spanish steps, but definitely not the usual tourist beat. Rome down to the last curl of garlic laden pasta.

Eventually having squeezed the last drop out of an extraordinary day, we headed with accomplished ease back the way we had come: Three trains, one bus and a long walk. There was the airport hotel, just where we had left it.

In a short space of time we had graduated from being accidental tourists to authentic travellers thanks to an angel.

OVER the last 10 years European River Cruising has become The Dream Holiday. The concept is wonderful – unpack once and travel the ancient highways of Europe. In April I was delighted to travel with Uniworld in France. I also managed to sneak onto several other ships to get a feel for what they offer to passengers so that I can explain to you what these vessels are really like.

I was surprised how long you are in port each day with the ships sailing mainly at night so that you wake up with a new region to explore. However when you travel through an area of scenic beauty you have time to sit up on the sun deck as you sail past small villages and craggy cliffs, fields aglow with the vibrant yellow of rape seed crops or the gnarly vines of the wineries which line the shores.

When in port enjoy wandering the cobblestone streets, a memorable concert in a castle, explore historical villages, play a game of petanque or become acquainted with the appealing lifestyle and heritage of this vibrant modern country which is proud of its history. It is surprising how diverse this country is, as you cruise through the Bordeaux region the chef visits the local markets daily selecting the freshest produce and wonderful wines. Uniworld was excellent. The crew are marvellous, the cabin appointments include L’Occitaine amenities and crisp white linen sheets,a cashmere throw to keep you cosy when it’s cool and their eye for detail is excellent. CHOICE takes on new consumer travel project

FOLLOWING the deregulation of travel agents, CHOICE has reached agreement with state and territory governments for a new Consumer Travel Hub project.The project will provide a mix of research, tailored information, education campaigns and advocacy to significantly improve the experience of Australian consumers in the travel market.

With a planned launch date of late 2014, the hub will identify issues with travel providers, products and services, and bring these issues to the attention of governments, regulators and industry.

CHOICE reached agreement with state and territory ministers in July, with the project to receive funding of $2.8m over four-and-ahalf years, provided from the now-defunct Travel Compensation Fund. This matches the funding already provided to the Australian Federation of Travel Agents to set up a voluntary selfaccreditation scheme from 1 July 2014.

Funding has also been provided to state and

territory governments to raise awareness about the changes to the travel industry.

Key features of the CHOICE proposal are: • Ensuring there is a strong consumer voice in the Australian travel market, identifying emerging consumer issues, and advocating for solutions.

• Publishing and promoting independent advice for Australian travellers on their consumer rights and protections, including common issues around travel agents and other providers.

• Providing unbiased reviews and how-to guides for navigating consumer travel products and services, including travel insurance.

CHOICE was one of several groups invited by the nation’s consumer affairs ministers to apply for funding to establish a consumer voice in the travel industry. This followed the decision of ministers to abolish the Travel Compensation Fund, which since 1987 was part of licensing arrangements for Australian-based travel agents. The fund also paid more than $60

million in compensation to consumers left high and dry when agents went bust, such as when a Sydney-based cruise company went into administration in 2012.

While we recognise the travel industry is evolving, CHOICE advocated for reforming the fund rather than abolishing it. We also argued that if the fund were abolished, dedicated resources should be provided for consumer protection.

When ministers decided to abolish the fund anyway, and to provide funding to the travel industry to set up a voluntary selfaccreditation scheme, we argued that comparable amount should be provided to

help consumers.

THE occasion was the 68th Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet at Southport Yacht Club and, for the fifth year in a row, the musical program was presented by Mudgeeraba’s popular Hinterland Community Band led by founder Vic Knowles. Vocalist on the day was Jocelyn Armstrong-Bode.

Former Director of Music – Royal Australian Navy (1987 - 1992), Vic was with the RAN for 35 years. He formed the Hinterland Community Band—”a band of the community for the community”—in October 1995.

Drawing membership from all areas of the Gold Coast, the Band currently is made up of 44 full and part-time volunteer musicians and supporters who come from a range of skills and ages. In addition to providing musical support for a variety of organisations in local and nearby areas of Mudgeeraba, the Hinterland Community Band provides free monthly Twilight Concerts upon the Village Green, Railway St, Mudgeeraba. personal support, legal advice, hospital and home visits, accessing entitlements and providing a social hub.

A recent analysis undertaken showed that over the past five years the VSC had accessed

over $8.5M in entitlement for Veterans and their families. As important, if not more so, in the past 12 months they have provided over 2,500 hours of volunteer work including home, hospital and respite care visits.

Now the VSC is looking for help.

The VSC is currently run by two paid staff and over 20 volunteers, all of whom are Veterans.

Alice Hornby is one of those volunteers and has been at the centre for over four years during which time she has made steadfast friendships. “The reasons I love working at the VSC is the satisfaction I get from making others, less fortunate than myself, happy. The people I work with are so friendly

and being here boosts my self-esteem and makes life worthwhile.”

Says Alice The main challenge for the VSC in recent times is connecting with younger Veterans.

Many current service and ex-service personnel are unaware of their entitlements, with some believing entitlements are not meant for them.

The VSC is open five days a week and they encourage any Veteran to come along and speak with them to better understand what assistance is available for them and their families.

Australian Dr Catherine Hamlin AC, author of The Hospital by the River, and her late husband Dr Reginald Hamlin, originally from New Zealand, founded the Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Fistula Hospital in 1974. Expansion has since taken place to include five regional centres; the Hamlin College of Midwives, and Desta Mender (Joy Village), a farm and training centre for long-term fistula patients.

Fistula results from “agonising obstructed labour” during childbirth, well explained on the Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia website http:// hamlin.org.au/. The newborn child often dies and the mother suffers “horrific internal damage” as well as crippling social isolation. Jenny Crewes explained that “the cost of an Obstetric Fistula Operation and care for the patient during her recovery is in the region of $650”, free-of-cost to the patient although the patient must find her own way to the hospital’s doors, often an added hardship that can include long walks through remote bushland plus uncomfortable bus rides.
