Continued from Page 1 Blue Care South Coast General Manager Linda Taylor said the program involved regular visits by a specially-trained Play Up™ performer, who worked with staff members to creatively engage with residents who live with dementia. “The program gives our residents sunshine, hope and laughter in what can sometimes feel like a cloudy day,” she said. “Blue Care provides tailor made services to suit the differing needs of each client and resident at our facilities, and this is a great example of that. “Our teams have done a fantastic job to make a difference to residents’ lives and they do this every day without the need for reward or recognition. “We are absolutely delighted to receive national acknowledgement through the Better Practice Innovation Award.” The annual Better Practice Awards recognise innovation and better practice in aged care to encourage improvement across the industry. The awards are organised by the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency – the accreditation body for residential aged care in Australia – and include five categories: environmental management/ living environment, health and personal care, innovation, resident lifestyle, and staff development and retention. The winning services include: Blue Care Labrador Gardens Aged Care Facility, Labrador, Blue Care Pineshaven Aged Care Facility, Elanora, Blue Care Talleyhaven Aged Care Facility, Tallebudgera, Blue Care Woodlands Lodge Aged Care Facility, Arundel, Blue Care Kirrahaven Aged Care Facility,
Kirra, Blue Care Amaroo Aged Care Facility, Tweed Heads and Blue Care Kingscliff Aged Care Facility, Kingscliff. Ms Taylor said an evaluation of the program found there had been a significant improvement in the mood and attitude of both residents and staff during the program, as well as a reduction in falls amongst residents. “They say laughter is the best medicine and with this program, we really see residents become engaged and their home becomes a place where there is so much laughter, singing and sometimes even dancing,” she said. According to the Australian Government Department of Health, dementia is one of the major reasons why older people enter residential aged care or seek assistance from community care programs. With the projected rise of Australia’s aged population, it is estimated the number of people living with dementia is projected to triple to around 900,000 by 2050. Blue Care is a not-for-profit organisation which works inpartnership with clients, families and other health providers to support 13,000 people every day with tailor made services that maintain their independence, personal wellbeing, community connections and quality of life. community news Yvonne Cody honoured by Gaven Electorate
Dr Alex Douglas is pictured with Yvonne Cody and her loyal pet, Misty, affectionately nicknamed ‘Miss Mischief’, after presentation of the award
NERANG resident Yvonne Cody has been honoured as the ‘2014 Gaven Electorate Most Community-Minded Senior Citizen’ for her commitment over 25 years to
bringing happiness to people’s lives through pets. Member for Gaven Dr Alex Douglas MP presented the award to Yvonne during a Seniors
Week morning tea. Yvonne founded the notfor-profit communitybased Pets for Therapy program in 1989 and, since then, Pets for Therapy volunteers and their pet dogs have spread cheer to thousands of people in nursing homes and aged care facilities, as well as in hospitals and respite centres and to children and adolescents with special needs. The visually impaired, too, have been caringly included. “Behind the scenes Yvonne and her team work tirelessly to ensure the service is of the highest standard,” Dr Douglas said. “Much time and work go into the selection process; co-ordination of the program, and volunteers and training of the dogs. Yvonne’s commitment to the cause is further demonstrated by her follow-up with the people with whom she works.” He continued, “Yvonne liaises with clients and
volunteers to gain feedback and input in order to continue delivering a high-standard service. Her program demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the community.” Dr Douglas initiated the ‘Gaven Electorate Most Community-Minded Senior Citizen’ award in 2010 to recognise the contribution of seniors in the community. Previouslyhonoured recipients Edna McLeod and Elsa Easton watched-on as Yvonne received her much-deserved accolades which, if past honours are any indication, Yvonne would have accepted on behalf of all at Pets for Therapy. For more information about Pets for Therapy, please call Yvonne on 5578 2607 or email: yvonnecody@bigpond.com.

Shaping the future of retirement village living A review of Queensland’s retirement village laws is currently underway to improve protection for residents and enhance the long term viability of the industry. Retirement villages are a popular accommodation choice for retirees and seniors, with around 28,000 residents currently living in 317 retirement villages throughout Queensland. Minister for Housing and Public Works, Tim Mander, said as part of the review retirement village residents and operators are being invited to have their say via an online feedback form on the Government’s ‘Get Involved’ website.
A consultative Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) has been released to allow all interested parties to provide feedback on the proposals. Feedback is being sought on a range of topics including village closure, best practice standards, alternative financial models and early payout of a resident’s exit entitlement after they leave the retirement village. Mr Mander said comments on the proposed changes will help ensure a balance of power between residents and operators and will help the industry continue to meet the needs of the growing seniors population. The consultation is open
for six weeks and all submissions must be received by 5pm Wednesday 24 September 2014. For more information, visit www.getinvolve d.qld.gov.au. Written submissions can be submitted by email or post on this Review of the Retirement Villages Act 1999. You will find a copy of the Consultation Regulatory Impact Statement on the website, and if you don’t have a computer, please ask your local Queensland Minister for a printed copy. A perfect Gold Coast day greeted A Walk in the Park participants raising money for Parkinson’s disease
IT was called A Walk in the Park and a walk in parklands surrounding the Southport Broadwater it was for some 85 people of all ages—along with a number of four-legged companions— raising funds for Parkinson’s Queensland. Organized by Carole and Alan Farrell of the Helensvale Parkinson’s Support Group, the Gold Coast event was opened by Mayor Tom Tate in front of the Southport Runners and Walkers Club, opposite Ada Bell Way, Broadwater Parklands. Mayor Tate’s father suffers from Parkinson’s disease, Australia’s second most common neurological disease after Alzheimer’s. Parkinson’s affects one in
200 Australians, with an estimated 30 people diagnosed daily. Dr Tien Khoo from Griffith University School of Medicine and with special interests in Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases also spoke to the gathered crowd. Local councillor Dawn Crichlow showed her support by taking part in the walk. A Walk in the Park is a yearly nationwide Parkinson’s fundraiser. The Parkinson’s Support Group meets on the last Wednesday of each month, 9.30 a.m., at Club Helensvale, Discovery Drive, Helensvale. Everyone welcome. Energy Deregulation Bills leave Queensland seniors cold
PROPOSED changes to Queensland energy regulations would leave older people out in the cold without adequate consumer safeguards, National Seniors Australia has said. As they now stand, the Bills would remove the safety of government price setting and allow the market to set prices without providing sufficient protections for consumers, National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill told the State Development, Infrastructure and Industry Committee at state parliament this week. In contrast to other commercial contracts, the changes would allow energy retailers to increase the price of energy contracts at any time, with no minimum notification period. O’Neill called on the government to include measures such as a minimum notification period of price changes - including increases to fees, charges and the lowering of any discounts. “This would ensure that they can change providers if they are unhappy with proposed price increases,” he said. A cap on termination fees would also help consumers avoid becoming unfairly locked into elec-
tricity contracts and ensure those experiencing hardship were not punished for late payment of accounts. “An effective public awareness campaign is needed to promote greater public understanding of the proposed changes,” O’Neill said. He also called for a ministerial consumer advisory committee to be set up to ensure consumers’ concerns and interests were represented, a less confusing billing system and fortnightly or at least monthly billing to help older people budget more easily. O’Neill said people living in retirement villages and manufactured homes would also face higher electricity costs while receiving limited access to concessions and a lower standard of consumer protection than customers connected directly to the grid. “This anomaly exists as many residents of retirement villages and manufactured homes have no direct connection to the electricity grid and buy their electricity from the park owner through an on-selling agreement.” Courtesy: ‘Connect’, National Seniors

Bumpers will look like new
WE’VE all done it before, got a little too wide when pulling into the car park, reversed into the hubby’s trailer and hugged the garage walls a little too closely. There is nothing more embarrassing than driving around in a scratched car but most of the time it’s not bad enough to pay high premiums on insurance or panel beaters to have fixed. Not to mention having to
live without your car for a day or two while it is getting fixed, it is inconvenient and frustrating. Fortunately, a business has noticed this gap in the market or car repairs and has provided a service that is convenient, professional and fast. BumperTech will come to where your vehicle is parked and repair scrapes, scratches and those unsightly damaged bumpers and minor panel damage. Forget searching high and low for matching touch-up paint, BumperTech uses a Dupont mini paint system that matches the colours. BumperTech is a cost effective repair service when compared to an insurance claim. “Research shows a well presented car brings maximum price and speedy sale,” John Cowan, BumperTech representative said. A five year warranty is given with every job. For an obligation-free quote on BumperTech services phone 0412 241 014.

Report on Australian end of life policy THE baby boomers are reaching old age and in the next quarter century the number of Australians who die each year will double. But dying in Australia is amongst the most institutionalised in the world – 86 per cent of Australians die in hospital or residential care. Many have deaths that are lingering, impersonal and disempowered and the cost of dying is high. With dying on the increase, this will become a much more significant issue for health policy in the future. The forthcoming Grattan report, ‘Change to die for’ argues that death is hidden and avoided and that most people have not discussed the services and support they would like when they die. How do we get people to discuss their preferences and choices for end-of-life care and what reforms are needed to ensure people have a good death? It’s a sobering thought that, as baby boomers reach old age, the next quarter century will see a doubling in the number of Australians who die each year. The Grattan Institute staged a forum - a Policy Pitch – in August to discuss the sad state of dying in Australia. So many of us die in hospital or residential care and many deaths are lingering, impersonal and disempowered and the cost of dying is high. This will become a more significant issue for future health policy.
Changes to rego labels from 1st October 2014 THE days of scraping a registration label off the corner of the front windscreen are numbered, following a Newman Government decision to end the stickers. This will bring Queensland into line with most other Australian states which have already gone stickerless. From 1 October 2014 you won’t get a registration label when you register your light vehicle. This includes cars, motorcycles, light trailers,
light caravans, light buses and motorised wheelchairs. Recreational boats will still need to display registration stickers. You need to display a rego label up until 30 September. After this date you can remove it, but this is optional. Advanced technology allows the detection of unregistered vehicles using number plate recognition, rather than citing a sticker on the front windscreen.

Shirley Waldron was honoured for her dedicated efforts in growing Fairview Retirement Village’s library
An avid book reader, Shirley took it upon herself to build up the village’s library, which originally consisted of two shelves. Retirement Village Co-ordinator Kathy Cook said it was fabulous to see the way residents had embraced the library. “Through Shirley’s commitment and dedication, the library now takes pride of place
in our community hall, thanks to book donations from the community and to the Dinner Committee for providing additional funds for the purchase of new books,” Kathy said. “Not only did Shirley set up the alphabetic filing system in the library, she also created and maintained the village’s historical information through the implementation of a book and photo album, recording all past and present residents living within the community, as well as the site’s history.” At the event Shirley was presented with flowers and a certificate of appreciation stating that she was “very surprised and chuffed” with the honour.

community news Haemochromatosis Australia - Are you pumping too much iron? HAEMOCHROMATOSIS, or inherited iron overload disorder, is the most common genetic disorder in Australia. It causes the body to absorb excess iron which builds up in the organs and joints over many years and eventually becomes toxic. Early
symptoms include joint pains, fatigue, weakness and sexual dysfunction. If untreated it can lead to more serious and potentially fatal symptoms including diabetes, liver cancer and cirrhosis, heart failure and osteoarthritis. Despite being so common
Page 10 - Gold Coast Seniors - September 2014
(one in 200 have the genetic pre-disposition) it is not well known and is under-diagnosed. Often only the individual symptoms are treated and the underlying cause is not recognised. Tests for the condition are simple and cheap.
If people are diagnosed early and treated then haemochromatosis is no barrier to a normal healthy life. Treatment is simple, drug free and uncontroversial. Regular venesection, like giving blood at a blood bank, unloads iron. Often this can be done at the Red Cross Blood Service and the blood is useful. If you know someone in your family has haemochromatosis, or you have been feeling tired and aching for an extended period, talk to your GP about haemochromatosis. Haemochromatosis Australia is the support, health promotion and advocacy group for people with haemochromatosis and their families. The group has operated continuously for 22 years. We are a not for profit group run entirely by volunteers. We have been endorsed as a deductible gift recipient by the ATO and are registered as a charity. We have approximately 1500 members across Australia. We operate an Info Line 1300 019 028 and informative website www.ha.org.au .
Swiss hearing aids lead the way
Trivia Answers: from page 8
HEARING specialist Don Hudson says the new “Micro” completely in the canal hearing aid has become a popular choice amongst his clientele when it comes to selecting a new set of hearing aids, “Many of my clients are surprised that despite the dramatic reduction in the size, the latest hearing aids are packed with far more features and can easily outperform the sound fidelity of their current hearing aids fitted four or five years ago. In some cases their current aids are five times the size, but far inferior in all respects of sound quality.” The company specialises in discreet hearing aid options for all clients, and only fit the latest in hearing aid technology. “We fit the latest Swiss digital devices. They have always led the way in hearing aid technology and that is the same today.” Another major factor users need to consider is the comfort of a device. “Comfort is a very important priority. We use excellent impression techniques and often give clients the option to have an ‘open ear canal’ which means the device can usually not be felt at all.” Don says a thorough hearing assessment and client consultation is also a vital part of selecting the correct hearing aid. “Many people are unaware that the hearing test is a crucial piece of the puzzle when it comes to accurately selecting a hearing device. Certain devices are a match for certain types and amounts of hearing loss. We are passionate about pairing the correct hearing aids to match the client’s hearing test and cosmetic and comfort needs.” A1 Discreet Hearing Aids has sites at the Q Super Centre, Mermaid Waters, the Tweed Day Surgery in Tweed Heads and Parkwood. To make an appointment with hearing specialist Don Hudson, call 07 5578 6669. All clients can receive a free hearing assessment and consultation. community news Government pushes ahead to unwind consumer protections
THE Abbott Government has pushed ahead with its crusade to unwind consumer protections in financial advice with the passage of its weakened FOFA reforms through the House of Representatives. The original FOFA consumer protections were introduced by the former Labor government after thousands of mum-and-dad-investors were left destitute by the collapse of Storm Financial and Opes Prime. “In winding back these protections the Abbott Government has clearly sided with big business over ordinary Australians,” said National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill. “Claims that cutting industry red-tape will drive down the cost of financial advice mean nothing to people whose life savings are at stake.” “Seniors don’t want cheap and nasty. They want financial advisers and their institutions working in their best interest and being accountable under reasonable consumer protection.” “The recent Commonwealth and Macquarie Bank scandals highlight the deeply entrenched sales cul-
ture of Australia’s private financial institutions”. “It’s not a matter of if but when we see another example of retirement savings lost on the back of shonky sales-driven advice”. “Government simply shouldn’t allow this to continue”. O’Neill also expressed concern that the proposed changes were proceeding in advance of the final report of David Murray’s Financial System Inquiry. “The Inquiry’s interim report has red flagged the financial advice model. The Government should wait for the final report of its own Inquiry before making changes”. With the support of the Palmer United Party, the Coalition Government is: Removing the requirement that, every two years, financial advisers confirm their clients want to keep paying commissions and fees for services they may no longer receive; Removing the catch-all aspect of the duty to put the client’s interests first and, in doing so, provide a safe harbour for advisers against investors claiming for

Do you want to know how to store your vegetables in your fridge, so that they stay fresh for two to four weeks or more? It’s so simple, and it will save you lots of money like I have! Recently I came across a product called “Super Fresh Bags”. These bags store food in the fridge for freshness and longevity. I’m sure most of us Villagers waste fruit and vegetables because they “go off” before we get to use them up completely. Well, this need not happen anymore and the proof is in the pudding. Prior to Christmas I put various items in these bags to test. On returning from holidays some three weeks later, all of my vegetables were as I left them in the refrigerator – fresh and ready to eat. In fact, I Roslyn Roberts of Hammond Village, Coombabah, QLD now have had some spring onions stored for over six weeks and they are still fresh. My personal experience with these bags has been nothing short of fantastic and for what it is worth I want to share this with you. The bags pay for themselves in no time. And the best part is the bags are washable and reusable over and over again. I have been using my bags for over 20 months now and they are still going strong. You will find that these bags have a myriad of uses and it is just a matter of experimenting. The bags have a very minimal cost and are posted free all over Australia. Go on line and visit www.superfreshbags.com.au for more information or to make a purchase or if you don’t have access to a computer call

community news Dentures - frequently asked questions
Q - How easy is it to adjust to wearing dentures? A – It is normal for new dentures to feel a little strange at first, but rest assured that you don’t look any different. You will soon start to smile, talk and eat as confidently with dentures as you would with your natural teeth. Q - Will my dentures affect my sense of taste? A - Food may taste a little different at first, while your mouth is adjusting to the feel of the denture but will soon start to taste normal again. Q - Should I take my denture out at night? A - If you choose to keep your dentures in overnight, always clean them thoroughly before you go to bed - just as you would your natural teeth, but use a denture cleanser rather than toothpaste, as toothpaste can scratch dentures. - Leaving your dentures out at night gives your mouth and gums an opportunity to recover from the effort of supporting your dentures during the day. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene by cleaning gums, cheeks and tongue with a soft toothbrush where odour causing bacteria also resides. Q - How do I take care of my dentures?
A - Just like natural teeth, dentures always need to be cleaned morning and night in order to remove food particles and plaque. This is best done with a mild denture cleanser. Q - Can denture adhesives help me? A - Whether your dentures are new or you’ve had them a while, you may find their retention and stability are affected by the structure of your mouth. - The level of suction that helps hold them in place (particularly the upper denture) varies with the amount of saliva you produce. You avoid foods like crusty bread, nuts and apples that may displace your dentures. The pips and seeds of some fruits can get trapped underneath, causing irritation and pain. - A denture adhesive can help you overcome these problems. Q - What should I do if my dentures hurt? A - Dentures should not be painful, so if they hurt it’s likely that something is not quite right. Visit your Dental Professional as soon as possible. Visit your Dental Prosthetist or Dentist at least once a year to check on your denture fit and oral health status. REFERENCE: http:// www.polident.com.au/more/denturefrequently-asked-questions.aspx
QLD drivers urged to roo-main aware on the roads
With NRMA Insurance claims date showing that kangaroos account for over 75 per cent of all animal related collisions on QLD roads, the insurer is urging drivers to be alert while at the wheel*. The insurer’s data also showed that dogs, cattle, cats and emus are the other animals most likely to be involved in a collision in QLD. NRMA Insurance Head of Research Robert McDonald said kangaroo collisions generally peak in the winter months, posing a hopping hazard to drivers. “We encourage drivers to slow down when driving, particularly at sunrise and sunset as this is when kangaroos are often most active and looking for food and an increased number of collisions occur,” said Mr McDonald. Mr McDonald said that although most animal collisions occur on country roads, city drivers should also be mindful when dogs and cats are near cars. “We want to urge all drivers to be aware when at the wheel. How you react when you see a kangaroo on the road can potentially save lives. “If you hit a kangaroo and it is critically injured, you can call your local wildlife group or the Police,” Mr McDonald said. NRMA Insurance offers some advice for QLD drivers: If you see an animal on or near the road, you should try and brake, but not swerve to avoid a collision; Reduce your speed inside sign posted wildlife areas; If you hit the animal and safety permits, you should try to help by moving it to the side of the road to prevent further crashes; Don’t force the animal to eat or drink; and Contact a local veterinarian or a wildlife rescue centre.

OLDER people and carers are reminded of the vital information service offered by UnitingCare Community’s Seniors Enquiry Line. The Queensland Government-funded Seniors Enquiry Line still has available a limited number of printed copies of the 2013-2014 Seniors Business Discount Directory for holders of a Queensland Seniors Card, Seniors Card +go, or Seniors Business Discount Card. Seniors Enquiry Line Coordinator Julie Argeros said the directory is a great resource for seniors and their carers wanting to maximise the discounts and specials on offer from participating businesses and government services. “It is difficult to know all of the discounts that are available to card holders and it is not always easy to remember to ask if a discount applies at the point of sale,” Ms Argeros said. “For those who don’t already have a directory, 20132014 versions are still available for regions from Brisbane to Far North Queensland. “The Seniors Enquiry Line staff can post these out to you or provide information about business discounts over the phone. “We can also assist with information about who is eligible for a Seniors Card and how to go about applying for one.” For a copy of the 2013-14 Seniors Business Discount Directory or to access a range of information and services available to Queensland seniors, phone the Seniors Enquiry Line for the cost of a local call. Tweed koalas on the move
Pic: courtesy friendsofthekoala.org
A NUMBER of recent koala sightings have confirmed the koala season has officially begun on the Tweed Coast, Council’s Koala Connections Project Manager, Scott Hetherington, said.Drivers are urged to keep a careful lookout “Our Tweed Coast koalas are still highly threatened and we cannot afford to lose any to road accidents this year. We implore drivers to be vigilant when driving, especially between dusk and dawn and when driving through bushland areas.”Mr Hetherington said. He said koalas were more active during their breeding season from September to March and often crossed roads in the area. “The section of Clothiers Creek Road through Cudgen Nature Reserve is notorious for incidents involving koalas and cars,” he said. “The road bisects a significant area of habitat and a known koala population.” Mr Hetherington said Council was finalising plans for new measures at Clothiers Creek Road, including new signage and pavement treatments to be installed in coming months to highlight the area as a koala zone. However, lower traffic speeds and greater care by drivers would help reduce the threat.

Puppies prepared for future Protection Duties
SECURITY measures in Brisbane will be visibly increased during November for the G20 Summit including numerous canine units doing detection duties in public areas and protecting visiting world leaders. A behind the scenes look at training and demonstrations of law enforcement dogs exists just a few hours outside of Brisbane in the Southern Downs region, in the nation’s first ever permanently open to the public working dog kennel, Lawdogs Australia. Set in the idyllic landscape of Stanthorpe amongst renowned wineries and paddock to plate experiences, resides a privately owned
and operated ‘Dog Show With Bite’. Guests can share in the journey of pocket size protection puppies starting out their training for future security roles around Australia and Papua New Guinea, as well as view adult dogs doing demonstrations of protection, detection, agility and obedience. The hour long commentated show also allows visitors to participate and pat young puppies as part of their socialisation process, is safety fenced and suitable for all ages. Dog trainer and Lawdogs Australia owner Matt Hibberd said ‘We have a number of puppy recruits starting training
over Winter and Spring so visitors now see everything from puppies learning the basics through to adult protection dogs showcasing all that the dog industry does out in society’. Lawdogs Australia is open every Wednesday and Saturday for scheduled show times at 11am and 2pm, and welcomes tour and bus groups on other days by prior appointment. We also offer discounts to groups and bus tours and is very suitable for all ages. Lawdogs Australia, 335 Church Rd The Summit, Qld 4377. community news Affordable and Advanced Dental Implants
TOOTH loss can affect both the physical and psychological well-being of a person, resulting in long term detrimental effects. Today, dental implants offer patients the best option for replacing missing teeth. A dental implant, correctly placed will integrate with the jawbone and look and function like natural teeth. However, the procedure requires a high level of precision and expertise. With qualifications from the prestigious Royal London Medical and Dental Hospital, University of London, Dr Mark Taylor is the principal dentist at Taylor Dental Implants and Aesthetics. He has been practising dentistry for more than 22

years; restoring and placing dental implants in London and Australia for over 15 years. Dr Taylor was among the first ten dentists in Australia to undertake the pioneering two-year Implant Masters program at the Gold Coast’s Griffith University School of Oral Health, receiving a Masters in Clinical Dentistry-Implants. To date, he continually undertakes advanced training in cutting-edge dental implant technologies and techniques. Dr Taylor says, “My preference is to spend time with patients to help educate them about dental implants and discover their needs. There is no substitute to listening to a patient’s concerns. This initial conversation and a complete examination helps me evaluate the best treatment options”. Most of his patients come from word of mouth of satisfied patients recommending their friends and family. Whether single, multiple or full tooth loss, Taylor Dental Implants, centrally located in Southport, offers one of the most competitively priced advanced implant placements on the Gold Coast. These advanced dental implant systems come with a 10 year limited warranty. Dr Taylor also offers a free initial consultation. DonateLife speaker eager to spread word about organ and tissue donations THE simple facts are that organ donations save lives; tissue donations improve quality of life. One organ and tissue donor can save up to ten lives and improve the lives of many more. Amanda Gilbert, Regional Donor Coordinator, DonateLife Queensland, is eager to speak free-ofcharge to community groups throughout Gold Coast and area about organ and tissue donations and to answer any questions on the subject. Australia is a world leader for successful transplant outcomes yet has one of the world’s lowest organ and tissue donation rates. Around 1700 people are on Australian organ transplant waiting lists although, on average, two Australians weekly will die waiting. Many world religions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Jehovah’s Witness and Sikhism, support organ/tissue donation and transplantation as acts of generosity, merit and benevolence. Pope Benedict XVI endorsed organ donation as a ‘compassionate choice’. DonateLife Queensland, as part of the National Or-
gan and Tissue Donation Authority, coordinates all aspects of organ donation within Queensland. There are no charges to families who wish to donate. Details can be found on www.donatelife.gov.au, where visitors are encouraged to ‘Discover the facts about organ and tissue donation; decide about organ and tissue donation; discuss your decision with your family and friends’. To register as an organ and tissue donor, visit the Australian Organ Donor Register website at www.medicareaustralia.gov.au; call Medicare Australia on 1800 777 203, or fill out a form at any Medicare office. Your local GP may have registration forms too. Even if you have previously registered your decision elsewhere it is still important to do so on the Australian Organ Donor Register, the only national register. Details can then be linked to your Medicare number. Amanda Gilbert of DonateLife Queensland can be contacted through the Gold Coast University Hospital switchboard: 1300 744 284 or via email: amanda.gilbert@health.qld.gov.au.

Investment Information for Recent Retirees
“MY accountant has suggested a Self Managed Super Fund but I have no experience in arranging my own investments.” This appears to be a common experience for many retirees. Quite often, accountants, for totally appropriate reasons, will recommend that a retiree should transfer their superannuation into a Self Managed Superannuation Fund. However, as the name suggests, this leaves the retiree with the responsibility to selfmanage their own investments within the fund. For retirees who have little or no experience in investing this can be a daunting task particularly as a wrong decision could have a catastrophic effect on their retirement finances. To help provide a broad range of investment information, the Gold Coast branch of Australians in Retirement (AIR) will be holding a free forum for all Gold Coast retires entitled “The Basics of Investing.” Mr Robert Grover, AIR Gold Coast President, said: “This forum has been designed to provide basic investment information for Baby Boomers and retirees who wish to learn more about managing and understanding their own retirement funds. We will have a range of speakers discussing investing into shares, property, fixed interest investments etc.”
The meeting will be held at 9:30 am at the Broadbeach Seniors’ Centre, 23 T E Peters Drive, (cnr Havana Keys), Broadbeach on Wednesday 3 rd September. All Gold Coast retirees are welcome to attend. For further information or to register your attendance please contact Rob Grover at robgrover@hotmail.com. Australians in Retirement is the business name for The Association of Independent Retirees, the peak body representing the interests of retirees who are self -funded or in receipt of a part pension.

ON October 21, 1950 the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers commenced with a street procession that stretched three miles in length. Led by a bullock team and watched by a crowd estimated to be 50,000 strong, the Parade was a resounding success. The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers subsequently became firmly cemented as an annual event in the region’s community calendar. As the years passed, Carnival’s appeal widened, attracting tourists from across Queensland, interstate and internationally. The theme for the 2014 Grand Central Floral Parade is “A Storybook of Colour”. A firm family favourite, The Floral Parade promises to deliver a spectacular line up of fresh floral floats, street performers, carnival characters, stilt walkers, walking groups and live bands all led by the Grand Central float carrying this year’s Celebrity Grand Marshall! community news Guide dogs prove to be model students at UQ
Photo: courtesy of University of Queensland
THE University of Queensland’s iconic Great Court has formed the back-drop for a photo shoot with Guide Dog puppies Sally, Nigel and Libby. The dogs are the April pin-ups in the newly released Guide Dogs Queensland fundraising calendar. Guide Dogs Queensland Marketing Manager Janelle Mogridge said the calendar featured iconic locations throughout South-East Queensland. “We chose to feature our
puppy talent in the Great Court at UQ this year because it is such a uniquely Queensland location,” she said. Ms Mogridge can attest to the challenges of working with animals, especially puppies. “I have worked on every shoot and can say that each situation is different as you can never predict what will happen on the day. “Flexibility and an extensive repertoire of doggieattention-getting noises are a must.
“Some photographs take minutes to get while others take a lot longer, meaning we work on the calendar for a couple of months.” The UQ April shot celebrates International Guide Dog Day. “We wanted to link this day of celebration to UQ because it’s a place of education and training,” she said. Other locations featured this year include Bribie Island, a historic home at West End and a laneway in Fortitude Valley. All puppies and guide dogs-in-training featured in the calendar are members of the Guide Dogs Queensland colony. Ms Mogridge said all profits from calendar sales go toward providing mobility, independence, freedom and support services to blind or vision impaired Queenslanders. “We only receive seven per cent of our funding from government, with the remainder generated through community support. More than 90,000 Australians are blind and 300,000
have vision conditions that can’t be corrected by glasses or surgery. The calendars are available through Guide Dogs Queensland’s online shop at guidedogsqld.com.au for $24 delivered.

community news Keeping grandchildren safe in your home WHEN grandchildren vellous things they see world and often see this ‘unique view of the come to visit, it is easy to and do. Children have a things differently to world’ can sometimes get distracted by the mar- very unique view of the adults. Unfortunately, cause the child undue harm, which can lead to a medical emergency. St John Ambulance (Qld) volunteer Liz Coffey has more than 15 years of hands-on first aid experience and knows the risks associated with a toxic environment for children. She urges all grandparents to familiarise themselves with the following first aid tips to ensure grandchildren can continue to safely visit their ‘Nanna and Poppy’. 1. Contact numbers: When someone dials triple zero (000) for an ambulance, the first question operators will ask is ‘what is the exact address of the emergency?’ “This information may be easy to divulge if it is your own home, but would you remember the exact Safe Removal of earwax or foreign bodies street name and number of your grandchild’s from your ear canals home in a stressful situaOur Audiologist uses the same tion?” Liz asked. “In an emergency, simple infortechnique as used by the ENT’s mation such as the street address can be difficult to recall due to increased stress and anxiety levels.” Liz suggested that all grandparents, parents, guardians and carers have address details clearly visible on the fridge or near the phone. “The safety note should include the street address, phone number and any other important information to help find the residence, such as the colour of fence or location of the front door if hidden,” she said. Ensuring your home has this safety note ensures that any visitors, such as babysitters or friends, know exactly what to say in an emergency. “Something as simple as a safety note with your address listed could mean the difference between a

life saved and a life lost,” she said. 2. Poisoning: Young children are naturally inquisitive as they learn all about the world around them. Most grandparents are quick to move household chemicals and detergents to higher shelves away from little hands, but many forget to ensure the nappy bag is also in a safe place. Liz said nappy bags are possibly the most dangerous item in the house, as they tend not to be locked and are often placed at a child’s sight level. “As children get a little older, they learn that the nappy bag can have all kinds of goodies inside, such as yummy treats, favourite books and treasured toys,” Liz said. “Next to their favourite stuffed toy in the nappy bag are other nasties that should not be accessible;

plastic nappy bags, wet wipes, nappy creams, teething creams, powders as well as paracetamol or other medication. As the child’s mind grows and develops, zips and clips are a fun learning activity but can pose a potential danger.” Liz recommended placing a small padlock around the zippers to ensure harmful products are out of reach. 3. Choking: From very early ages, children put things in their mouths in an attempt to learn more. Unfortunately this is a fact of life and cannot be completely avoided. This unique method of learning new things can pose a very serious choking danger, which can lead to brain damage or even death. Liz said grandparents were shocked to learn the dinner table is not the most common place for children to choke. “Children are more likely to choke while travelling in a car than at the dinner table,” she said. While a child is in a car seat in the back of the car, they are unsupervised and unable to prepare themselves for bumps, turns and stops. “It is very tempting to provide a child with a treat to keep them satisfied and quiet while in the car,” she said. “However,
with the combination of turns, stops and bumps and the adult focussing on the road ahead, the chances of a child silently choking in the back of a car are quite high.” In the event of a child choking, it is important to act quickly. “Sharp and quick blows to the back are the most effective way to save a child who is choking,” she said. “Ensuring you are up-to-date with first aid qualifications means you will be prepared and confident to provide the correct management for choking in adults, children and infants under 12 months of age.” 4. Head injuries: As children begin to crawl and walk to discover the exciting world around them, the occasional bump on the head is quite a common occurrence. “Head injuries can differ greatly, ranging from a small bump on the head to a more severe injury where the child is knocked unconscious,” Liz said. Ensuring your first aid skills at up-to-date will make things easier for you in the event of an emergency. “Head injuries can be quite scary, and the steps you take could mean the difference between a minor incident and a major medical emergency. Treatment for head injuries varies depending on severity; one way of determining this is whether the child cried straightaway or not,” she said. Crying is a normal and expected reaction, and can indicate a minor injury. “If the child does not cry straightaway or appears groggy, confused or dazed, they may have sustained a concussion which requires hospital assessment and observation,” Liz warned. “A first aid course will inform you of the signs and symptoms of a head injury, and will provide you with the confidence to give your grandchild the proper care they require.” If the child screams straightaway and a lump or wound appears on the head, controlling the bleeding is the first priority. community news 100th Anniversary of Australia entering World War I on Anzac Day 2015
THIS will be a very special day for all Australians but with only 120,000 veterans (for the whole of Australia?) we will be pretty thin on the ground on Anzac Day 2015. So we want everyone to look in their old tobacco tins, shoe boxes and cupboards to find the medals of their passed WW1, WW2, Korea and Vietnam family members plus also past Australian Defence Medal, (ADM) recipients wearing both groups medals (on the right breast) in their honour and pride at your town’s dawn service and Anzac Day Parade! We also invite all serving and ex- service ADM recipients, - that’s army, navy, air force, men and women, national servicemen, CMF/ Ares etc (most of whom would be family members – known to you
members and ADM recipients to march together with us veterans, come out and march and tell everybody you know who has
- in your town) to also join the dawn service and Anzac Day parade at your local Cenotaphs, Memorials and Flags. They will be asked to wear their ADM (on their left breast) with pride in their service in the Defence of Australia. Veterans always have pride of place on the Day and we will proudly march with your townsfolk,
recognising the honourable service of all past and present members of your town community... I also wonder if in country towns you could use your local newspaper and notices on shop windows, advertise and invite them to march, and maybe put on a BBQ for all the proud family members wearing the medals in their home

Beware of carbon tax repeal scams SCAMwatch is warning consumers and businesses to be aware of scammers looking to take advantage of the carbon tax repeal to steal your money. Scammers may take advantage of dollar figures being quoted in the press about how much consumers may save from changes in the price of goods following the carbon tax repeal. Scammers may call or email consumers and small businesses with false claims that they are entitled to the money upfront. Scammers often use major government programs or announcements like the carbon tax repeal to trick people into handing over their money or personal banking details. Scammers pretend to be from a government department or agency, or from a business such as an energy provider, to sound legitimate. They may spin a range of stories to make their story sound real, such as claiming that there is money due to you because of a tax refund, tax concession, one-off payment, discount, return or even a bonus. Scammers typically ask for money to be sent via wire transfer as it’s nearly impossible to recover money sent this way. They may also ask for people’s financial and other personal details to access their money and commit identity theft. Be on guard, you may receive a phone call or email from someone asking for your personal or banking details in order to pay you money due to the carbon tax repeal. If you are approached in this way hang up – the person on the other end may be a scammer. If you have any doubts about the identity of any caller who claims to represent a business, organisation or government department, contact the body directly. Don’t rely on numbers, email addresses or websites
provided by the caller – find them through an independent source such as a phone book or online search. Never give your personal, credit card or online account details over the phone unless you made the call and the phone number came from a trusted source. If you think you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately. You can report scams to the ACCC by calling 1300 795 995.

community news Weak bones, weak bladders
MORE and more research is showing that incontinence and osteoporosis are closely linked, which has significant lifestyle implications for women approaching middle age and older. While there are some conditions where the link to incontinence seems logical - such as being overweight, heavy lifting orweak pelvic floor muscles -there are some where the connection is quite unexpected. One of these is the link between osteoporosis and urinary incontinence. A 2009 Canadian study (Sran MM, 2009) found
that middle-aged and older with osteoporosis had a much higher incidence of incontinence than women without osteoporosis. The Canadian findings are supported by the work University of Newcastle researcher Associate Professor Pauline Chiarelli. Her research, which is part of a 15-year longitudinal study of more than 30,000 Australian women, provided further evidence of the link between incontinence and osteoporosis. Dr Chiarellisaid her researchwas now focussing onthe relationship between
height lossassociated with curvature of the spineand incontinence. “It is well understood that women with osteoporosis lose height because of the spinal deformity associated with vertebral fractures the most common osteopathic female fracture. “There is also research suggesting that curvature of the spine increases the risk of pelvic organ prolapse because of the subsequent altered positioning of the organs, muscles and bones within the abdominal cavity(Mattox TF et al, 2000),” she said. organ prolapse. “Currently an average of one osteopathic fracture takes place in Australia every eight minutes, and this is expected to more than double in seven years’ time if the trend continues,” she said. The disease occurs when bones lose minerals such as calcium quicker than the body can replace them,
leading to a loss of bone density or mass, and a higher risk of fractures. There are 1.2 million Australians, predominantly women over 55 years of age, with the condition. Osteoporosis Australia advocates three main measures for the promotion of healthy bones and the prevention of osteoporosis: adequate calcium
intake, normal vitamin D levels (to help absorb calcium) and specific weight-bearing exercises. Gold Coast Sailing Club a Varsity Lakes treasure SENIOR Sailing was one of a number of exciting free events offered during Seniors Week 2014. Initiated by the Gold Coast Sailing Club, Senior Sailing gave participants the opportunity to discover this maritime sport within the perimeter of suburban Lake Orr at Varsity Lakes. Gold Coast Sailing Club founder Commodore Chris Ruston hopes to start a permanent seniors’ sailing group in the near future. For those interested but unsure, the first sail will be free. Operating out of the Community Sports House, 337 Christine Avenue, the Gold Coast Sailing Club is a registered not-for-profit charity assisting disabled sailors and unemployed persons. The main focus of the Club is to teach adults and children how to sail; with special emphasis on providing sailing pathways for the disabled, many from local Special Schools. Training is currently taking place for the Special Olympics Queensland team, which is heading to Melbourne in October for the Special Olympics Australia National titles. Winners of the Nationals will travel to the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles with accompanying volunteer assistants. Gold Coast Sailing Club has some 30 volunteers on

Welcome to Opal Aged Care (formerly Domain Principal Group) Different Name – Exceptional Care Six of our residential aged care homes in the Gold Coast and Tweed areas, Domain Varsity Rise, Domain Ashmore, Domain Kirra Beach, Domain Florence Tower, Principal Murwillumbah and Principal Tweed Heads, have now changed their name as part of a company-wide rebrand. We have relaunched as Opal Aged Care from Domain Principal Group and as part of the relaunch we are proud to announce a significant new partnership with Alzheimer’s Australia. The partnership is the largest educational partnership Alzheimer’s Australia has undertaken with an aged care provider, and signals a new direction as a company and a renewed commitment to providing specialist aged care to the growing number of Australians living with dementia. Through this partnership Alzheimer’s Australia will train every one of our staff including those in our Gold Coast and Northern NSW Opal Homes. Our new identity better reflects who we are and what we are aiming to achieve and communicates our position as a specialist aged care provider. You will see that our name, logo and colours have all changed around the community but the exceptional care we are known for will continue. We know that deciding about residential aged care is a difficult decision and can often be confusing. Our focus is on communicating honestly and openly with the community, residents and their families about some of the unspoken emotions of aged care, such as fear, guilt, sadness and sometimes relief. We want to help make the transition easier. To discuss options for residential aged care or to arrange a tour, please give me a call. Goggomobil Darts fill Goggonutters’ hearts
THE occasion was the 2014 Coolangatta/Tweed Heads Cooly Rocks On celebration, billed as the country’s biggest ’50s and ’60s nostalgia festival and a mix of rock’n’roll, rockabilly, dancing, cars, fashion, retro markets, nostalgia and more. Some 1200 vehicles—hot rods, custom builds and classics—were on display during the 11-day Gold Coast event held between May 30 and June
9, including a number of Goggomobils. That’s right, Goggomobils. Goggomobils actually do exist and have done so for over 65 years. They are not figments of an advertising executive’s active imagination as a certain television ad might have had us thinking. Adding to the historical mileage, Australian automotive ground-breaker Bill Buckle is credited with pioneering the building of composite cars and de-
veloping the fibreglassbodied Goggomobil Dart sports car, in Sydney, in the late 1950s, with other Goggomobil models built under licence. Steel-bodied Goggomobils were first produced by Glas (later purchased by BMW) in Dingolfing, Bavaria, Germany after WWII, with the Australian-built Dart’s chassis and mechanical components based on the German Goggomobil microcar. Pictured in the forefront is a 1960 Goggomobil Dart on show at the 2014 Cooly Rocks On event that drew an estimated 100,000 visitors. Weighing in the vicinity of 345kg, production of Goggomobil Darts ceased in 1961. A final toot of the horn regarding these pint-sized head turners is that Goggomobil enthusiasts refer to themselves as Goggonutters, with ‘certified Goggonutters’ (so the story goes) having to be ‘a little bit nutty about’, and passionate to preserve, Goggomobils. Go go Goggonutters!

With “in excess of 25,000 known species in nature and at least 40,000 hybrids to date”, new orchid hybrids appear daily. “Once the exclusive province of the wealthy specialist”, today orchids are grown in homes and greenhouses throughout the world. The Southport and Districts Orchid Society Inc encourages and welcomes anyone who wishes to learn about these distinctive plants. Meetings are held on

History honours for heritage happenings CITY of Gold Coast was recognised in the recent prestigious National Trust Heritage Awards. Mayor Tom Tate said the six awards acknowledged the importance of telling the story of the Gold Coast, conserving the history, and celebrating our unique identity. “There is a growing awareness and interest in celebrating our distinct heritage. Telling the stories of where we have come from as a city enhances our sense of identity and is the platform for rich cultural growth,” Cr Tate said. The awards recognise achievements in identifying, conserving and promoting cultural heritage. Thousands of Gold Coasters attended the exhibitions and open days featured in the National Trust Awards, including: Journeys to Sugaropolis – Silver award. Produced as part of the ASSI 150 project, this historical exhibition looked at the Australian South Sea Islander contribution to the development of the city and adjacent parts of Logan and the Tweed. This region was once referred to as Sugaropolis, where Australia’s sugar industry
began on the backs of indentured South Sea Islander labourers. The exhibition told the important story of these people and their descendants, from the 1860s through to contemporary times. The ASSI project also received a silver award. The Perfect Fit – Silver award. This exhibition, accompanying booklet and videos explores the beginnings of cultural diversity on the Gold Coast by looking at our first multicultural entrepreneurs. In the 50s, 60s and 70s the Gold Coast was a series of small towns, with Surfers Paradise as the centre of tourist development. It was growing quickly and it offered many opportunities for those with entrepreneurial vision. The Perfect Fit exhibition runs until December 2014. Heritage Gold – Heritage Open Day program 2014 – High commendation. The series covered the
coast and gave residents and visitors a peek into our pioneering past. Local museums opened their doors for a series of free heritage events providing residents with a guided view into the rich history
of the Gold Coast. The awards also recognised the conservation management plans for Ceramic House in Nerang and the former Benowa Post Office. – High commendation.

Solace Gold Coast celebrates 20th birthday THE welcoming setting for Solace Gold Coast’s 20th birthday celebration was the centrally-located Quality Hotel in Mermaid Waters where 95 people enjoyed a festive luncheon and entertainment by the popular Voices in Harmony choir. Open to widowed men and women of all ages, Solace is an organisation that “plays an important role in helping people understand that what they are feeling after the death of a partner is normal. Solace provides a place for its members to talk about their feelings and problems in the belief that grief must be resolved before the widowed can move on. Solace also helps the
the years but Solace supporters from the community as well,” Betty said. Solace Gold Coast meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Broadbeach Senior Citizens Centre, 33 T.E. Peters Drive,
Broadbeach. The first hour, 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m., is devoted to the needs of the newlybereaved and those who have a special need, such as marking anniversaries. The main meeting follows from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. Yearly Solace

Protect those arthritic joints WE have long known the importance of exercise in the treatment of arthritis. Now recent research and clinical trials from Johns Hopkin University are confirming this. Researchers found that although the therapeutic importance of physical activity in the management of arthritis is not always recognised, it has many benefits. Regular exercise can help keep the muscles around the joints strong, decrease bone loss and help control joint swelling and pain. Strengthening the muscles surrounding affected joints helps to relieve pressure on the joint and cartilage. Regular exercise helps replenish lubrication of the cartilage of the joint and reduces stiffness and pain. Lack of physical activity is associated with increased muscle weakness, joint stiffness, reduced range of motion, fatigue and general deconditioning. Exercise needs to be directed at the entire body and not just the joints that are affected with arthritis. Although
outdoor exercise is most important, there are indoor options for keeping muscles strong and joints moving– very convenient for those who cannot have strenuous activity. A range of exercise equipment is available, but one of the easiest to use, is the Aircycle circulation booster while having coffee, chatting on the phone, reading or watching TV. It is so convenient, you can use it almost anywhere – at the office, at a meeting, in the car and on long flights. Many people relieve pain, increase circulation and joint flexibility, reduce swollen ankles and cramps and improve their leg strength, balance and mobility by keeping the Aircycle beside a comfortable chair and using it several times a day for short periods. Results are often surprisingly fast. Aircycles are recommended by health professionals and carry a lifetime guarantee. For more information or to order visit www.aircycle.co.nz or phone 0412 329 450 See advert on page 20.
Gold Coast, “run by volunteers who have lived the experience.” Solace groups also meet at Garden City in Mt Gravatt and in Chermside, Brisbane. Betty, who was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2012 for her services to Solace, is State President Solace Queensland Inc. “The birthday celebration was a happy social event that not only brought together many of those who have been helped by Solace over

Prostate surgery may be unnecessary for many men IT is a well-known fact that surgery on the prostate for BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, the condition also known as an enlarged prostate) usually has a high incidence of complications and unwanted side-effects. Chief complaints after surgery are impaired sexual function and incontinence. However there may be good news for those men suffering from this condition and considering surgery. Magnus Shield approved for use in Australia has been clinically proven to help alleviate the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, thus eliminating the need for invasive surgery. Distributed by Graminex Australia, Magnus Shield does not require a prescription and can be bought over-the-counter at pharmacies. Already in widespread use in Victoria and Queensland, Magnus Shield is now available locally in New South Wales at pharmacies and chemists. John’s Pharmacy Located at 338 The Entrance Road in Long Jetty, John’s Pharmacy is known for its friendly and knowledgeable service. According to Helen, the store pharmacist, many of the regular customers who start taking Magnus Shield quickly experience relief from their symptoms by the fifth or sixth week, if not sooner. Those who take it regularly according to the instructions have reported positive results. To find out if Magnus Shield can help you or someone you know, step into John’s Pharmacy and speak with Helen. For more information about the Magnus range visit www.magnus prime.com or call 1300 360 289. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

Fingers Crossed Across Australia
Page 38 - Gold Coast Seniors - September 2014
Early retirement, as a result of breast cancer and an uncertain future, saw Lorraine Wise and her husband Mike hit the road to explore this wonderful country. Eight years later, she has recorded their grey nomad adventures in Fingers Crossed Across Australia and is raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation through sales of the book. Here Lorraine shares an extract from the book of their time at Kakadu National Park: Each time I visited the loo on four of the five days we spent at the northern campground, a tiny, tawny tree frog was sitting in the same spot behind the door and, of course, I always said “hi”.Those who know me well, take no notice when I talk to my veggies, the plants in the garden, or anything really. On day four the little frog was gone – oh, no! Day five, there were two backpackers chatting away in stilted English, doing stuff
to their faces and hair as I went in and closed the toilet door. I don’t know, but perhaps you can imagine their reaction when they heard the mad woman who had just said good morning, also say to the toilet bowl, “Ooh, you’re back!Where have you been?”They stopped talking and there was dead silence. They were also conspicuously absent when I reappeared a tiny bit later.Me?I was very happy to see the little frog back in its special place. Read more about the book and see some of Lorraine and Mike’s great photos and camp recipes at http:// milowise.com. The book is available from Amazon, Outback Adventures Supa Centre, 313 Morayfield Road, Morayfield, or by emailing Lorraine at milowise@hotmail. Proceeds from the sale of the book go to National Breast Cancer Foundation.

OUR retirement dream had arrived! Travelling Britian by car south to north staying at booked B & B’s. We drove through picture book villages with thatched-roof cottages and the typical English pub round every corner. We received a warm welcome everywhere with the exception of one unusual experience. Travelling north we arrived early in the beautiful Lakes District, and decided to spend the morning boating on Lake Windermere before enjoying a lazy lunch. Time flew and we drove through green valleys with blue lakes enjoying the countryside. In a fading light we found ourselves on a minor road unsure of our B & B location. Eventually finding our way, we knocked on the door of a very old stone farmhouse. “So sorry, we lost our way...” we started to say as a very angry faced woman confronted us with “you’re late!” in no uncertain tone. She stood aside to let us in and any further apologies were ignored. The meal was served in silence, and we retired early feeling like two naughty children! During the night we were awake listening to some strange dragging sounds past our door with low whispering. We decided not to mention this at breakfast in view of our previous day’s unacceptable tourist behaviour. Thanking our host for the comfortable accommodation, we piled into the car and set off. Looking back at the farmhouse windows I saw an unusual sight. With the curtain drawn back, a very elderly lady in a wheelchair raised a frail hand to wave ‘Goodbye’. I waved back wishing she had been part of our farm experience, but felt happy that the bond of friendship was being shared. A memorable trip to the UK ended far too soon.

There was much at steak
READER Margie Lloyd tells of her lucky escape at airport security:A few weeks ago, I went to New Zealand to a family wedding. The day before I left I had lunch in a pub with some friends. One of them found the steak rather tough and only felt like eating about half of it. Being from the generation which does not waste anything, I wrapped her left over steak in a paper serviette and popped it in my handbag to take home to my puppy. Two days after my return, from New Zealand, I was rummaging around in my handbag and found this little parcel, wrapped up in a paper serviette. As my memory is not as good as it used to be, I was very surprised to discover the piece of steak. By then it was exactly two weeks old but surprisingly did not smell too bad at all. It ended up in the bin. The funniest part of the story was that my handbag had passed through security X-ray machines twice and had even been opened by the security officer who had singled me out for a random drug inspection. If she had discovered the little parcel, or if I had been encountered by a sniffer dog, I would have been in big trouble for importing undeclared animal products into New Zealand, or back into Australia. I’ll never know how much was at steak.

Port Douglas: strictly for the birds BY PHIL HAWKES
SURE, most of us have been to Port Douglas. For many, it’s the best winter destination in Australia. And with good reason. There’s a huge range of accommodation from 5 star luxury hotels to apartments and backpacker lodges. Moreover, the food scene is probably the best in Tropical North Queensland although with Sydney prices, it has to be said. Nothing like a little indulgence once in a while. Reef trips, the Daintree, Cape Tribulation and Cooktown all beckon for day trips or longer; but at the end, there’s always the more sophisticated embrace of “PD” awaiting with its boutiques, craft shops and spas. Plus a couple of lively pubs. Wait, there’s more. It’s to be found just outside Port Douglas, remote from the town’s activity but only a 15 minute drive away, just off the Cook Highway towards Cairns. This is the Thala Beach Lodge, a private nature reserve with just 83 rooms which are so secluded that you can hardly believe anyone else is there. The “rooms” are in fact luxurious bungalows dotted randomly around a headland, with dense vegetation and magnificent trees creating that feeling of isolation. Depending on your choice of room [and price], the views of the Coral Sea or the jungley surroundings from your balcony are the stuff of picture postcards. Owners the Prettejohn family are justifiably proud of what they’ve created from an old cane and coconut plantation. If you feel like re-engaging with the human race, there’s a bar/lounge and Ospreys, a casual restaurant with extensive breakfast offerings plus a ”modern Australian” dinner menu created by Chef Catherine Pacey…and a fine wine list to match. No doubt one of the finest tables in North Queensland. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the “Bird Tour” with guide David. Armed with binoculars provided by the Lodge, we’re privileged to spot a multitude of feathered varieties including two Ospreys and their chick, nesting at the top of a power pole on the property…we watched in awe as the male returned from the sea with a large fish to feed the family. Kind of inspiring! There’s also a nature walk and for us, a long beach walk was perfect to help digest an indulgent breakfast. Monday nights are notable for the Indigenous culture program with Harold Talley, an elder of the Kuku Yalanji people, helping our understanding of the history of the Mossman region. Port Douglas has certainly come of age. If you thought it was a top place years ago, it will delight you now. Even better, there are now much cheaper flights from Brisbane since Tigerair started flights to Cairns…there’s a daily service at a convenient time around noon, so you don’t have to arise with the birds. Wait until you arrive at Thala Beach Lodge for that. www.visitportdouglasdaintree.com.au I www.thalabeach.com.au
