Take a look at Seniors Week
IT’S official - older people who engage with the world around them are happier and healthier. While physical activity and healthy eating are part of our good health, social connections are also vital for maximising health and happiness in older age. Someone with high levels of social activity has 43 percent less disability than someone who has low levels of social activity, and about half the rate of cognitive decline. Some of the greatest transitions in life occur in older age, including retiring, downsizing, or losing social ties. All of these changes have their effects but the secret to staying healthy as we age is having a good social life and staying active. Queensland Seniors Week, our

So dip into our calendar on pages 20 to 33 and find something you will enjoy or maybe even try something completely new. Take your pick from croquet, computer tips, concerts, morning teas, lawn bowls, genealogy, writers’ groups – the list goes on and there’s something for everyone, including many free activities. Our two local councils support and promote a range of events during Seniors Week, to encourage us to continue to participate in all aspects of community life. Let’s end our winter hibernation, start sharing ourselves around and celebrating the things we can still do.

community news The Carbon Tax is dead
THE carbon tax is dead; but don’t expect to see a major difference in power bills - or for too long. It doesn’t matter that many households were compensated for any impact of the scheme under the Household Assistance Package, or that the carbon tax prevented 11 to 17 million tonnes of carbon emissions. Nor does it matter higher it resulted in some filthy brown-coal fired power stations being mothballed. Like it or loathe it, it’s
kaput. The passing of the repeal turned Australia from a leader to laggard. “The repeal of Australia’s carbon price is a tragedy, not a triumph,” said Michael Raupach, Director, Climate Change Institute, Australian National University. “It flies in the face of three giant realities: human-induced climate change, the proper role of government as a defender of the common good, and the emerging quiet energy-carbon
revolution”. According to the ABC, consumers can expect to save between 20 and 50 cents each day on their electricity bills now the carbon tax has been repealed. However, any financial benefit relating to power bills could quickly be eaten up by increases in other charges. For example, in New South Wales, Ausgrid wants increases of around 2 per cent a year over the next five years and TransGrid wants to raise prices by almost 4 per cent - this is
Currumbin/Elanora VIEW Club
just in relation to network charges. Other states including South Australia have just implemented more electricity price rises. The average South Australian household will pay around $85 a year more. In Queensland, households were recently hit with a 13.6 per cent increase, expected to cost the average household an extra $190 a year. Any relief may have already been gobbled up before many will receive their postcarbon tax bill. Anyone planning to do something other than pay power bills with the perceived windfall may need to re-evaluate those plans. Media release: energymatters.com.au

community news PUP deal sells seniors short on financial protections OLDER Australians are stunned by a back room deal between Palmer United and the government which has seen the removal of important financial advice protections introduced after the collapse of Storm and Opes Prime. On Tuesday night Palmer United senators surprised everyone by voting to retain the
Coalition’s amended financial advice regulations which remove the best-interest catch-all; scrap the two-yearly opt-in; end mandatory fee disclosure statements for pre-1 July 2013 customers; and provide for scaled advice. “Australians left destitute by shonky financial advisers are stunned that Palmer
United has allowed these changes to stand,” said National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill. “After a lifetime of scrimping and saving for retirement, seniors are passionate about transparency in financial advice and fees,” he said. “This murky lastminute deal was done behind closed doors and
Oxenford/Coomera VIEW Club
without consumer consultation.” “It makes a mockery of the parliamentary process and it’s a disgrace,” he said. “Palmer United’s socalled ‘new consumer protections’ do little or nothing for investors; for example, an annual fee disclosure requirement for post-2013 clients is actually one of the Government’s existing watered-down provisions”.
Palmer United has sided with the Government to: Remove the requirement that, every two years, financial advisers confirm their clients want to keep paying commissions and fees for services they may no longer receive; Remove the catch-all aspect of the duty to put the client’s interests first and, in doing so, provide a safe harbour for advisers against investors claiming for
their losses; Remove the requirement for fee-disclosure statements to be sent to pre-1 July 2013 clients, denying already committed investors transparency afforded to others; Allow for the provision of ‘scaled advice’ which allows advisers to push a particular product without considering the consumer’s overall position. These changes are now
in effect. Labor, the Greens, independent Nick Xenophon and the DLP’s John Madigan all opposed the weakening of financial advice consumer protections. Independent legal analysis commissioned by National Seniors concluded the government’s changes, driven by banks that control 80% of the financial advice sector, represent a major detriment to consumers.

Bumpers will look like new
WE’VE all done it before, got a little too wide when pulling into the car park, reversed into the hubby’s trailer and hugged the garage walls a little too closely. There is nothing more embarrassing than driving around in a scratched car but most of the time it’s not bad enough to pay high premiums on insurance or panel beaters to have fixed. Not to mention having to
live without your car for a day or two while it is getting fixed, it is inconvenient and frustrating. Fortunately, a business has noticed this gap in the market or car repairs and has provided a service that is convenient, professional and fast. BumperTech will come to where your vehicle is parked and repair scrapes, scratches and those unsightly damaged bumpers and minor panel damage. Forget searching high and low for matching touch-up paint, BumperTech uses a Dupont mini paint system that matches the colours. BumperTech is a cost effective repair service when compared to an insurance claim. “Research shows a well presented car brings maximum price and speedy sale,” John Cowan, BumperTech representative said. A five year warranty is given with every job. For an obligation-free quote on BumperTech services phone 0412 241 014.

community news St Andrews’ gardening project keeps on giving IT’S a gardening project that keeps on giving, not only to those directly involved but to all residents of St
Andrews Lutheran Aged Care who find joy in nature. St Andrews Lutheran Aged Care, celebrating
Page 6 - Gold Coast Seniors - August 2014
its 20th anniversary in November, is located in a picturesque and tranquil semi-rural Tallebudgera Valley
setting. Complementing this backdrop are eight recently-established raised garden beds within St Andrews, garden beds complete with an array of plants as well as whimsical statues and birdbaths attracting feathered wildlife. General Manager Lisa Thorne says that all items for the garden beds, right down to the sheds, shovels, seedlings and secateurs, were purchased with funds awarded by Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund, now amalgamated to form the Queensland Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Lisa continues that without this generous $8,000 grant, the project, which continues to involve caring staff and keen residents, could not have proceeded. Some 12 residents were initially involved in helping set up the gardens with two, Lois
Glover and Joyce Darby, continuing a high standard of care in areas of individual interest. Lois has a colourful and eye-catching floral arrangement planted outside her room while Joyce enjoys tending the enticing herb garden, well-located for easy harvesting outside the facility’s kitchen. With the garden beds built at waist height, access and viewing are convenient for all at St Andrews where residents’ ages range from the 70s to, currently, 102 years young. St Andrews Lutheran Aged Care is located at 2 Sullivan Road, Tallebudgera. For further information, please call: (07) 5576 3559; email: standrews.ac @lccqld.org.au. Just a reminder that an Open Day Fete will be held at St Andrews on Saturday September 6 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

How will the carbon tax repeal affect you? ELECTRICITY and gas prices for EnergyAustralia residential and small business customers will fall after the Federal Senate approved the carbon price repeal, Executive Manager – Corporate Affairs, Clare Savage has said. With EnergyAustralia no longer required to pay for carbon, the savings will be passed onto households and backdated to 1 July, 2014. “We understand customers are facing cost of living pressures and the repeal means electricity prices will now drop, Ms Savage said. “We have been clear we will pass on the savings to households once the Federal Government stops collecting the tax from us. “The carbon price removal will impact electricity and gas costs differently for each user as it will depend on their current tariff, where they live and how much en-
persons the club meets on second Friday of each month at the Seniors Hall
ergy they use. “We will notify customers in the coming weeks about the pricing changes and what that will mean for them. Ms Savage said work was well advanced on removing the carbon component from the hundreds of different products and tariffs. “Unfortunately implementing system changes to remove carbon is not as simple as pressing a button - altering prices is a highly complex process and it’s important we make sure the changes are done correctly, she said. The carbon component will be removed from prices by mid-September. The backdated savings will be provided as a credit on household bills. Individual credits will flow to customers according to their billing cycle. Media release: Energy Australia

Sitting Killed 5.3 Million Worldwide last year
“DON’T be surprised (or insulted) if the next prescription from your doctor is for nothing but an exercise regimen”, says one writer from America. “Globally, 20% of early deaths are preventable with moderate exercise. And for the first time last year, sitting killed 5.3 million people worldwide – more than smoking. Inactivity is now considered a full-on pandemic by health officials. Many U.S. doctors are pushing to make “lack of exercise” a mainstream medical diagnosis”. “U.S. adults sit on average 8-10 hours every day.” Australians average 9 hours daily in front of a screen. We sit at computers, in the car, in cafes and we do love our TV! We all know that inactivity contributes to lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes and heart disease but now Australian researchers tell us that Inactivity affects our mood too. Prolonged sitting may contribute to the risk of depression. Getting enough exercise is a lot easier than most of us think. Our government recommends 30 minutes on most days and walking is an easy way to do this. The good news is, whether we are required to sit or just love to sit, we can learn to move while we sit. Seated exercise classes are available in many communities and can be most beneficial in keeping blood circulating and joints and muscles moving. And you can move while you sit in front of TV. A variety of equipment is available to help, one of which is the affordable Aircycle circulation booster - a self management tool for arthritis and diabetes, providing gentle exercise to relieve pain and swollen ankles and strengthen leg muscles. It is now available here by calling 0412 329 450, online: www.aircycle.co.nz or by mail order See advert Page 11

Chemotherapy could become obsolete in 20 years IF you have ever undergone chemotherapy, you will know of the debilitating, nasty side effects of the drugs. Well now, medical scientists are on the way to changing all this. A project aiming to revolutionise medicine by unlocking the secrets of

and above all better care for patients. “I believe we will be able to transform how devastating diseases are diagnosed and treated across the world.” The first genetic codes of people with cancer or rare diseases, out of a target of 100,000, have been sequenced. The genomes to be sequenced will be split evenly between cancer and rare diseases. Included on the cancer list so far are breast, bowel, ovarian, lung, prostate and leukaemia. Experts believe it will lead to targeted therapies and could make chemotherapy “a thing of the past”. Previous genetics research has shown how different cancers can be for example that breast cancer is not one disease but at least 10 - each with a different cause, life expectancy and needing a different treatment. And the development of targeted drugs such as Herceptin, only given if a patient’s breast tumour has a certain mutation has been possible because of genetics research.

Joy Giles
Patient! Congratulations to Mrs Joy Giles of Fernleigh on being the 100th patient to have her Anterior Approach Hip Replacement with Dr Hugh Won. She is very active around her farm and is now seen helping to dog-sit for her son. When her hip arthritis became severe in April, she came to the John Flynn Private Hospital for the Anterior Approach Hip Replacement, so she could rapidly regain her active lifestyle. Dr Won was able to access the hip from the front of the joint, through a 6cm incision. With this different approach, the muscles and tendons are not cut so pain is reduced and muscle strength is preserved. Unlike conventional approaches, there is also no need for hip precautions due to the joint stability. Joy does not have to avoid low chairs, cross leg positions or sleeping
on her side. Joy was home after 4 days and was able to fully weight-bear. She was able to drive after 2 weeks. To find out more about Dr Hugh Won and Anterior Approach Hip Replacements, please visit www.legbones.com.au or call 07 5598 0757 for an appointment. In July 2014, John Flynn Private Hospital’s Urologists were accomplished with performing the hospital’s 100 th robotic surgery procedure, a right hand partial nephrectomy. The da Vinci Si robot is well used and along with urology surgery, the robot is now also being used for robotically assisted hysterectomies, early throat cancer treatment procedures and a number of general surgical and bariatric cases. JAPANESE Misao Okawa, the world’s oldest woman, cel-
ebrated her 116th birthday in Osaka, western Japan this year.
Japanese men’s life expectancy rose above 80 for the first time in
2013, but was still several years below that of their female counterparts, whose lifespan was the world’s longest, figures released recently showed. A Japanese boy born in 2013 can now expect to live 80.21 years, up from 79.94 years in 2012, the health ministry said. The average lifespan of Japanese women rose to 86.61 years in 2013, up from 86.41 the previous year, making them the world’s longest-lived females for the second year running.
In second place were women in Hong Kong, whose life expectancy hit 86.57 last year. Australians overall ranked ninth in the world.

Battle of Leyte Gulf reunion announcement THE story of the 1944 Battle of Leyte Gulf is virtually unknown in Australia according to Southport resident David Mattiske. Yet, Leyte Gulf, located in the Philippines, was not only the largest naval battle of World War II but the largest naval battle in history. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Fought between combined US and Australian forces and the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Leyte Gulf campaign led to the liberation of the Philippines after Japanese invasion in 1941. David Mattiske served in HMAS Shropshire during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Over the years he has written much about this WWII Battle and will share some thoughts and recollections with readers in the September edition of the Gold Coast/Tweed Seniors newspaper. To observe the 70th anniversary, the Gold Coast Navy Week Committee is organising a commemoration service and reunion luncheon to be held on Sun-

day October 19 at Currumbin RSL, 165 Duringan Street. Special guest will be Philippine Ambassador to Australia, Her Excellency Belen Anota. The Battle of Leyte Gulf resulted in a large number of Australians meeting the peoples of the Philippines for the first time. Today, many Gold Coasters have Filipino origins. These residents, along with veterans and their families, are cordially invited to the commemoration and luncheon and to personally meet Ambassador Anota. Other dignitaries in attendance will be Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tait and Mrs Tait; Peter Tedman, Commanding Officer Naval Headquarters - South Queensland representing the Chief of Navy, and Division 10 Councillor Paul Taylor and Mrs Taylor. community news Quality care being delivered by quality people
1 Central Drive, Burleigh Heads QLD 4220
TO be a leader in today’s competitive market environment, it is important for businesses to recognise, recruit and retain “good people”. The best business model in the world is worthless if it doesn’t have a team of skilled, dedicated and passionate people to deliver its requirements. This is no different in the Aged Care Industry, particularly in Australia. With new government legislation recently introduced, the boundaries have been moved and many people are confused about their Aged Care options and
what the new rules will mean to them, as an individual or as a couple. Seasons Private Age Care understand this concern and have put in extra measures to work closely with residents and their families to support them through every step of the process, from initial inquiry right through to the final farewell. Founded on a philosophy of ‘life and ability, not age and disability’, it is no surprise that Seasons is one of Queensland’s fastest growing Private Aged Care providers. Five years ago Seasons operated
LIONS HAVEN FOR THE AGED
The art of ageing gracefully
“Very comfortable with .” high clinical standards . . .” Lions Haven for the Aged has operated its facility, with 61 beds since the opening in 1992. We have experienced a growing demand for quality, comfortable and secure Aged Care in the North Gold Coast area. Lions Haven is an approved & accredited Aged Care Facility with ageing in place. We are a 67-bed facility providing High and Low Care, which includes a 20 bed Secure Unit. Located on the Northern End of the Gold Coast (next to Sanctuary Cove), Lions Haven is a single storey complex where each resident enjoys their own room, which comes complete with en-suite and outside patio area. Our modern facility offers a safe and comfortable environment to ensure quality of life, safety and welfare of our residents, staff and visitors. Residents have the freedom to enjoy life in a homelike atmosphere where families and friends are most welcome.

just one village, today Seasons offers a choice of seven residential care options across South East Queensland - each in a unique location with its own distinct character and feel. The team of people who provide specialised care services within each facility play a key role in its success. One example is Registered Nurse and member of the Seasons team for 4 years, Kylee Cousins. Kylee is an energetic mother of two who loves nothing more than to bring happiness into people’s lives, right through to the very end. Her work at Seasons involves supporting clinical care residents. “I work with people in the last chapter of their lives and my main focus is to make sure they are as happy and pain free as possible. I treat everyone here as if they were my own parents, and if there’s something that needs to be done or organised for someone, I like to ensure that it is done as quickly as possible – often it’s the little things that can make the biggest difference”, Kylee says. Kylee has a challenging job, not only working closely with Seasons residents, but also communicating regularly with their families and preparing them also for the final goodbye. “When people are dying I like to make sure that they have their family around them and feel love and comfort, without pain. Naturally there will
be tears and I let people know that it’s ok to cry, it’s ok to say goodbye. I talk to people about the things other people don’t like to talk about, in the end its better to be prepared and supported through this process than live with regrets later on. Every family is totally different and people like to deal with things in their own way, I respect that, and there are always lots of surprises which keep my job interesting too”. Compassion and strength are the hallmarks of Kylee’s personality, she also has a very down-toearth approach to life which makes her friendly and enjoyable to be around. “In this job the good comes with the bad, but the opportunity to walk with people through the final stage of their life is amazing, I find it incredibly rewarding and couldn’t imagine doing anything else”, she says with a warm and genuine smile. There are many more people just like Kylee on the Seasons team. You’ll find them within every facet of the business, from the meal planners and carers, right through to the cleaners and garden maintenance staff. To experience this for yourself, we invite you to visit any one of Seasons wonderful Private Aged Care facilities across South East Queensland. Please contact our friendly reception team on 1300 506 116 or check outseasonscare.com.au for more information.

cancers. The Council aims to minimise the threat of women’s cancers through successful prevention, best treatment, support and world-class cancer research. In Australia, it is estimated that every day, about 50 women are diagnosed with breast or a gynaecological cancer.
Each year more than 2470 Queensland women are diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the second biggest cancer killer of Queensland women. The good news is, survival rates are growing due to earlier detection and better treatment, but we still have a long way to go. This is why Queenslanders come together each year on Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day to show their support for the one in eight women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85. You can get involved by selling pink merchandise, holding a Pink Ribbon Fundraiser, volunteering or donating. Go online to pinkribbonday.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85 for all the details.

Calling for Women’s Weekly Cookbooks
RED Cross Shops around Australia have come up with a fabulous way to mark the 100th birthday of Australian Red Cross in August this year, and support the Red Cross Big Cake Bake as well. More than 150 Red Cross Shops from Bowen to Burnie, and Broken Hill to Broome want us to rifle through our kitchens this month to look for any unwanted Women’s Weekly cookbooks in good condition, and 50’s Australian kitchen kitsch. Donate your books and 50’s kitchen kitsch to your nearest Red Cross Shop, and not only will you be helping to create an eye catching centenary window display for your local Red Cross Shop during August, but they will also be able to re-sell the books and kitchen kitsch afterwards, to raise money for the everyday work of Red Cross. Right behind the idea is none other than the amazing Pamela Clark, friend and mentor to a whole generation of Australian cooks, reared on recipes from the pages of Women’s Weekly Cookbooks. Pamela started as a home economist in the cookbook test kitchen, making sure the recipes all worked. This included triple testing recipes for such classics as the Chinese Cooking Class Cookbook, the original Women’s Weekly Cookbook, and the book that everyone has a story
about, The Children’s Birthday Cake Book. Pamela is now the Editorial and Food Director of Australian Women’s Weekly Cookbooks, and can’t wait to get involved in the Big Cake Bake and the 100th birthday of Red Cross. ‘Red Cross, just like The Australian Women’s Weekly has been helping Australians for generations says Pamela. ‘I love a bit of baking and anything that allows people to get together over cake for a good cause, has got to be a brilliant idea.’ To participate in the Big Cake Bake, make sure you register first to receive everything you need to run a successful event, including an information booklet, donation box, posters and lots more. Once registered, a host kit will be sent to you with all the tools. All donations raised from Big Cake Bake will support the everyday work of Red Cross, including programs and services to help some of the most vulnerable people in Australia and further afield. For more information about the Red Cross Big Cake Bake go online to bigcakebake.org.au, email bigcakebake@redcross.org.au, call 1800 652 635 or join the Big Cake Bake online community at facebook.com/BigCakeBake.

CELEBRATING SENIORS WEEK 2014 MAYOR’S
Message
Seniors Week is a celebration of the valuable contribution seniors make to the Gold Coast and encourages community participation, activity and inclusion. Our seniors are active, vital and productive members of the community who play a crucial role in the wellbeing of our city, with residents aged over 65 contributing to all facets of community life – in the workplace, arts, as carers, volunteers, neighbours, family members and friends. The number of seniors in our city is increasing. In 2011 there were 71,363 residents aged over 65 years and by 2031 this figure is expected to double, with seniors to form over 20 per cent of our population. The City of Gold Coast (the city) will spend $1.9 million this year to make the Gold Coast more accessible for seniors and people with disabilities, as well as building social connections. We’vejust launched an Accessible and Inclusive City Action Plan (AICAP), which supports the aims of Seniors Week. Its key actions include: • making City information more accessible by providing large print options • improving accessibility of city streets • providing our Council Cab Scheme • investigating a mobility scooter recharge point for community use • improving access and safety at road crossings. This year I will again host the Mayor’s Seniors Week Variety Concert, to be held on Thursday 21 August 2014, which will provide thousands of Gold Coast seniors with an extensive program of entertainment. As a Gold Coast senior, I welcome your feedback and invite you to contact me with any comments or suggestions at mayoralfeedback@goldcoast.qld.gov.au Tom Tate, Mayor

Happiness: The Key to Health in Old Age
Active Ocean View residents keeping healthy and active
WHEN Phil Usher (co-founder) started Tall Trees Care Communities, he consulted numerous people, including his own mum, to see what she wanted in a care community. That’s why the Tall Trees Care Community motto is: If it’s not good enough for our mums and dads, it’s just not good enough.” “Every mum and dad we talked to wanted a place where they could be happy. They may have used different terms, like independence or dignity, or not being led around and told what to do all day, but the bottom line is that elders are just like the rest of us—they want to be happy.” Phil said. Benefits of Staying Positive Recently, a study at University College London in England, led by Dr Andrew Steptoe, proved what our elders already knew without any scientific proof: happy people show less loss of physical function in old age. According to the study, there are myriad benefits to “keeping an even keel” and staying optimistic, outgoing and active. Among the benefits: faster walking pace, less trouble getting out of bed, less trouble showering and less trouble dressing. In addition, the study showed that happy people have only half as many incidences of arthritis, diabetes, stroke, cancer or heart disease as unhappy people. Tall Trees Will Make You Happy Tall Trees Care Communities already know this because they listened to their mums and dads, just as they listen to every one of their residents. Tall Trees Communities, place happiness at the top of the scale and do everything they can to promote an engaged, satisfying lifestyle at any age. “At Tall Trees Care Communities our care philosophy is simple – when you purchase one of our apartments, we provide you with all the care and assistance you need. It’s as easy as that. We’re not just a retirement village, we’re not a nursing home – we’re a Care Community - where residents are part of a vibrant, social, respected and welcoming community. Our flexible and practical approach to supported living and care allows you to enjoy the best parts of living at home, while still being able to receive high quality care and support when you need it. “This way, we can ensure that each and every one of our residents can live with as much independence as they desire, while always having the added reassurance of experienced and qualified nursing and care support staff on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” Phil said. Located on the top of Sexton Hill with a Pacific panorama, Tall Trees Ocean View at Banora Point has the perfect outlook. Tall Trees’ first northern NSW village has fantastic proximity to shopping centres, clubs and the beach, and residents have truly spectacular views out over the Pacific Ocean and the nearby Gold Coast. If you want to discuss your family’s needs, call the team at Tall Trees Ocean View, at Banora Point on 07 3442 9378 or visit talltrees.net.au

Yet this beautiful dream must end at midnight, and in her haste to depart, she leaves one jewelled slipper behind… Queensland Ballet’s new production of Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella is charming, humorous and blissfully romantic. Feros Care launches New affordable Social Transport Service AWARD winning aged care provider, Feros Care, will launch an affordable new door-to-door social transport service for eligible seniors living in Tweed and Gold Coast suburbs this month. The transport initiative is offering seniors social opportunities and is being delivered by Feros Care, with financial assistance from the Commonwealth Government via Home And Community Care (HACC). Feros Care Director of Health and Wellness Kate Swanton said she expected a lot of interest in Feros Care’s new service which would provide an inexpensive opportunity for seniors to go out on a regular basis and meet new friends. Outings currently include transport to Robina, The Pines and Stockland Shopping Centres and trips to the movies, shows and bingo games at Twin Towns and Jupiter’s Casino. “Feros Care’s new social transport services are being made available to help seniors keep living independently at home,” she said. “Research shows being socially connected is vital for maintaining health and wellbeing. We also know from years of experience with our existing clients that while seniors want to stay living at home, they can become lonely. “Our Feros Care social transport service will
assist those who miss the company of friends and would like the opportunity to have varied and interesting social opportunities.” Social transport costs $10 for a return trip. The social bus trips will be made to a variety of venues and locations as outlined in the monthly Feros Care Social Outings Calendar. Clients will need to pay for any additional activity costs, including the cost of the show or lunch, at the entertainment venues. Transport services will be available across the Gold Cast area. Diversity of Choice – A true Illustration of Consumer Directed Care CONSUMER Directed Care paves the way for a shift in paradigm from a mere approved service provider to a preferred provider. This is truly a recognition of consumer choice and control in the design and delivery of their care services which in turn shoulders a greater degree of flexibility, transparency, accountability and collaboration by service providers. Consumers’ perspective and direction are at the core of Senior Helpers policies, procedures and steer its strategic planning, processes and our community linkages& engagemente specially for special needs groups such as CALD, LGBTI & for clients with disabilities. Diversity issues guide every step of the process from assessment, to care plan design, service delivery, evaluation, continuous improvement and re-assessment. Our human resources strategy is constantly undergoing a CDC reinvigoration exercise to promote flexibility, innovation and co-production with consumers input and empowerment. The ultimate objective is to coach each member within the organisation to work towards consumer empowerment, independence, healthy ageing and re-ablement. Planning is built around consumers’ participation into a tailor made care plan individualised to fit their choices,
unique circumstances and chosen level of involvement. Key to our information management system is the design of individual budgets that provide transparent, simplified and friendly to track format of expenditures, account balances up to date and easy to read statements with large font sizes for visually impaired service users and in the appropriate language for CALD clients Consumers are equal partners from the get go by setting the goals, aspirations &needs, the components of the support plan, the choice of care staff, the frequency, the duration, the services mix including outsourced & brokered services, evaluation and reassessment of those components to achieve independence, wellness and re-ablement. Consumers are empowered to provide feedback, lodge complaints and change staff based on the service delivery and changing needs& circumstances. Senior Helpers champion consumer direction and provide consumers with information about success cases of other CDC success stories. Peer to peer exchange of ideas and know-how is key to help build capacity especially for CALD & LGBTI who may have suffered from previous social exclusion. THE Rural Fire Service (RFS) is warning that fire season has started early on the Gold Coast. RFS area director Corey Bock says there have been three wildfires in the region over the past couple of weeks, including two at Bonogin. Mr Bock says the long-term weather outlook is for extended dry conditions and that’s contributed to recent blazes. “The Gold Coast hasn’t had rain for some time and the vegetation is starting to dry out which means fires are starting quite readily at the moment,” he said. “We just have to be quite careful.” He has urged locals to plan now for a potentially dangerous fire season. “Queensland is renowned for having some of the fastest moving grassfires in Australia because of those big open plains that we have,” he said. “You don’t need to live in the bush, just around grassland areas and those sorts of places, there’s still a WORLD Wildlife Sanctuaries is a notrisk when that occurs.” for-profit group that aims to raise funds for the establishment of safe habitats for koalas and other wildlife. Festival of Quilts draws crowds
Wattle Quilters (l-r) Audrey, Nancye, Wendy and Sue work quickly and as a team on the group’s 1500th charity quilt over 20 years.
THE Gold Coast Quilters Guild 2014 Festival of Quilts was held in July at the Burleigh Waters Community Centre with a steady stream of both women and men enjoying the display throughout the day. Catching the eye
at every turn were 36 large quality quilts showcasing pattern and colour diversity, as well as 35 small Challenge quilts that were required to have a piece of supplied “ugly fabric” included within their design. As it turned
out, the Challenge produced an array of innovative and well-thought out mini masterpieces that did their makers proud. Keeping busy throughout the event were several members of the goodhearted Wattle
Quilters whose only aim is to make quilts for charity. With its beginnings 20 years ago, the group was working on its 1500th quilt at this year’s Festival of Quilts. Using a bettervalue-for-time tying method instead of sewing, the Wattle Quilters get together one day a month over 10 months each year to create their works of art that are then are donated where most needed within the community. Many Wattle Quilters are, or have been, members of the Gold Coast Quilters Guild. For information about the not-for-profit Guild, founded in Mudgeeraba in 1988, please visit: www.gcqg.info. Meetings take place at Burleigh Waters Community Hall, Christine Avenue, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of each month except December.

Top nutrition experts vote worst diets IT’S official – the three worst diets, as voted on by hundreds of Australia’s nutrition experts are the Lemon Detox Diet, SkinnyMe tea, and the Ashy Bines Bikini Body Challenge. avoided in 2014. From a list of eleven popular diets, the Lemon Detox Diet came out as the ‘worst’ by nutrition experts for the third year running, with more than two thirds (68%) of the dietitians voting against it. SkinnyMe tea was shunned by more than half of the dietitians (55%) while the Ashy Bines Bikini Body Challenge attracted votes from 32% of nutrition experts. DAA Spokesperson and Accredited Practising Dietitian, Melanie McGrice, acknowledges that with rates of overweight and obesity as high as 79% in some areas of Australia, weight is a big concern. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. “The problem with fad diets is that they’re all about restrictive eating patterns that you can’t stick to over the long haul and may even undermine your health,” Ms McGrice said. “What you lose on these detox diets, like the Lemon Detox Diet and SkinnyMe tea, is usually fluid, healthy gut bacteria, electrolytes – all the things to keep your body healthy, rather than fat. And you don’t need to go on a severe detox because your body has an inbuilt detox system – the lungs, liver, and kidneys working every minute of the day. If you want to ‘detox’, nourish your body by cutting down on fatty, highly-processed foods, alcohol and caffeine, and eat a balanced diet – making sure you get plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and water.” DAA says Australians should avoid fad diets, which often miss out on whole food groups. Diets such as the Ashy Bines Bikini Body Challenge often demonise certain foods and make it a challenge to meet nutritional needs. “For long-term success, Aussies should choose realistic and achievable goals that they can do every day. For example, including an extra serve of vegetables at lunch and dinner or cutting back your alcohol,” Ms McGrice said.

Juicing and –YOU “OFTEN in this technological age where computers diagnose diseases and perform surgery, we tend to minimise natural therapies. It seems incredulous that the simple act of drinking raw juices could turn around severe diseases, however I have seen it work in otherwise hopeless cases.” Dr. Sandra Cabot – Author of “Raw Juices Can Save Your Life!” Raw juicing is of paramount importance to cancer patients, as it can provide concentrated amounts of antioxidants and phyto-nuitrients to strengthen the immune system. Without raw juicing it is usually impossible to provide enough nutrients to support the immune system. Give your immune system a boost...Zap those autumn and winter flue bugs, improve your energy and vitality. Crush 4 cloves of garlic. Juice of 4 lemons – slice up some of the skin and add to the juice. 1 teaspoon of grated ginger Pinch of chilli powder and honey to taste Add 1 litre of boiling water and stand on bench top until cool Cover and place in the fridge until required For use, strain a cupful, then heat up before drinking, you probably would want to sweeten it with extra honey. Drink often...especially last thing at night. No one knows your body better than Mother Nature.

Medicines Australia welcomes medicines shortages initiative AN online information portal for healthcare professionals and the community which tracks and reports on medicine shortages in Australia was launched recently by the Assistant Minister for Health, Fiona Nash. Medicines Australia welcomed the Medicines Shortages Information Initiative, which promotes an environment that supports ongoing exchange of information between industry and regulators. “Medicines Australia is pleased to have partnered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Generic Medicines Industry Association (GMiA) to develop an innovative and collaborative approach to what will be a very useful resource for healthcare professionals and the community,” Medicines Australia Chief Executive, Dr Brendan Shaw said. “We know there are multiple factors that can contribute to unanticipated shortages in medicines supply, including things like manufacturing problems,
logistical failures, unexpected or unpredictable outbreaks of disease with fluctuating local demand, or end user stockpiling practices. “This information initiative will provide the tools needed to communicate effectively to the regulator and companies ahead of time, reducing the possibility of patients not being able to access their prescribed medicine due to a supply shortage, and minimising the impact on patients. “The development of a public website means healthcare professionals can stay up-to-date with the latest information and patients will have more consistent access to information about their medicines.” The TGA has been working closely with industry, including Medicines Australia and the GMiA, since November 2013 to develop the Medicines Shortages Information Initiative. The new website on medicine shortages can be found at: www.tga.gov.au/ hp/information-msi.htm.

IF you haven’t yet visited Norfolk Island, now is the time. Or if you have, you may like to return to do all the activities you did not have time to enjoy. There is so much more to Norfolk than you can imagine! Less than 3 hours flying from Brisbane or Sydney, the island boasts a pristine environment with beautiful beaches, a rugged coastline, World Heritage convict site and National Parks and Reserves dotted with the iconic Norfolk Island pines. It is a place where history, culture, friendship and community abound. Offering a myriad of sights and activities, culinary delights with food bursting with flavour, friendly local people and a sub-tropical climate, Norfolk Island is the perfect holiday choice for visitors of all ages. A third of Norfolk Island is within national parks and reserves making bushwalking, mountain biking and bird watching around the spectacular coastline popular activities. Other activities include history, heritage and cultural pursuits such as a visit to the museums, convict ruins tours, island cultural tour and shows such as the Mutiny on the Bounty show. For those who prefer outdoor activities, go for a horse ride, snorkel among coral reefs, trekking, fishing, golf, tennis, swimming or try paintball! Norfolk Island’s heritage is so extraordinary it reads like fiction. An enthralling legacy of Polynesian explorers, convicts, mutineers, South Pacific islanders and whalers can be experienced through the architecture, exhibitions, interpretive tours, shows and museums that bring the island history to life. The site of Kingston is World Heritage Listed, and include the ruins of the penal colony, Government House, the Golf Club, the Research Centre at No.9 Quality Row and of course the cemetery. This is one of the most fascinating areas of the Island to explore. Captain Cook described Norfolk Island as ‘paradise’ and we couldn’t agree more. Ageism’ in travel insurance sees many seniors opting out of overseas trips
SENIORS are travelling more and over longer distances so selecting the best travel insurance is imperative. The health of seniors is often more at risk when they travel, especially in less developed countries with poor quality drinking water and unfamiliar foods. Overseas climates can be quite different, too, especially if travelling to the European countries going from summer to winter in one air flight. A few countries have reciprocal health care arrangements, which means Australian seniors get free limited health care. But for most countries, health care costs defi-

nitely aren’t free and can be really expensive, which means if you need a doctor, a dentist, an ambulance or even hospital, unless you have travel insurance you’ll have to pay out of your own pocket. Ouch!
Many seniors often have some sort of pre-existing medical condition. Many conditions are already covered as standard within the policy, but for others they may have to pay a little extra. Regardless of how healthy and
fit you are, you can’t afford not to have travel insurance. Meanwhile, a report has surfaced which examines whether older Australians face age discrimination when purchasing travel insurance. The report, ‘Ageism in Travel Insurance’, summarises the key findings from a survey conducted by National Seniors and the Council on the Ageing (COTA) regarding members’ views and experiences with travel insurance. The survey showed those aged 70 years and over are more likely to report difficulties in obtaining travel insurance – or affordable travel insurance – as a

major reason for avoiding overseas travel. Almost a third of respondents (32%) reported they had to pay higher travel insurance premiums because of their age. Some of the key findings in the report showed that less than half of the respondents (44%) ‘shop around’ for the best travel insurance deal. More than half of the respondents (53%) received ‘widely differing’ quotes for the cost of travel insurance, with most reporting a difference of between 11% and 50%! Almost two-thirds of respondents (63%) have difficulty in understanding how any age restrictions operate after reading through information provided by insurers in product disclosure statements, brochures and websites. One in 20 respondents (5%) reported they had a travel insurance claim unexpectedly denied. Top ten travel tips for travelling overseas 1. CHECK the latest travel advice for your destination and subscribe to receive free email notification each time the travel advice for your destination is updated. 2. Take out comprehensive travel insurance and ensure it covers you for the places you plan to visit and the things you plan to do. 3. Before travelling overseas register your travel plans and contact details online or at the local Australian embassy, high commission or consulate once you arrive so we can contact you in case of an emergency. 4. Obey the laws of the country you’re visiting even if these seem harsh or unfair by Australian standards. Don’t expect to be treated differently from the locals just because you’re Australian. 5. Make sure that you have the right visas for the countries you are visiting or transiting and check any other entry or exit requirements. 6. Make copies of your passport details, insurance policy, travellers cheques, visas and credit card numbers. Carry one copy in a separate place to the originals and leave a copy with someone at home. 7. Check with health professionals for information on recommended vaccinations and other health precautions. Remember that vaccinations can be an entry requirement for some countries. Also find out about taking medication overseas - certain medicines aren’t allowed in some countries. 8. Make sure your passport has at least six months’ validity from your planned date of return to Australia. Carry extra passport photos in case your passport is lost or stolen and you need to replace it while you’re away. 9. Keep in contact with friends and family back home and give them a copy of your travel itinerary so they know where you are. 10.Check to see if you’re regarded as a national of the country you plan to visit, and whether dual nationality will have any implications for your travel plans. HOLIDAY & Leisure Cherry Blossom Festival .. the most exciting time to visit Japan and all its great wonders
ONE of the most exciting and colourful ‘must-visit’ spectacles is the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan, a traditional celebration that goes back thousands of years. References to sakura hanami (flower viewing) parties appear in literature as early as 894, during the Heian era, which has influenced Japanese culture – including art, food, fashion and theatre – to this day. The anticipation of the blossoms’ arrival is celebrated in early March at the country’s major museums, where precious 17th-century screens are taken from storage and displayed, generating excitement that the blossoms are on their way; that the harsh winter is almost over; and that spring is just around the corner. Mandarin World Tours is offering two special itineraries that capture all the excitement and wonder of the festival. “I recommend two packages – the 11-day
heart,” says Navy Wang. “I have travelled extensively over the past year to our major destinations including China, Japan, Korea and southeast Asia inspecting hotels, meeting local travel experts and attending travel marts and negotiating better deals. “I am so excited to keep exploring new destinations for our future products and find something new to add to our existing tours. Contact Mandarin World Tours at Suite 4, 3368 Pacific Highway, Springwood, or phone Navy on (07) 3808 9918. Email:sales@ mwtravel.com.au

Nara, Hiroshima and Osaka, letting you discover Japan from all aspects,” says Navy Wang, managing director of Mandarin World Tours, based at Springwood. The 11-day Sakura trip explores Japan at its best season with spectacular views of the cities covered by the symbol flower of Japan – Mount Fuji and the ancient city of Kyoto, where you can immerse yourself in a traditional Kimono show, a tour to the strongest castle in Japan as well as ancient temples and shrines, and the chance to explore famous Japanese style architectures. The trip ends with a tour of the beautiful southern capital city of Osaka. In Tokyo, the Blossom starts around the end of March or the beginning of April. The starting point can change by as much as two weeks from year to year. If the weather
during the months before is relatively mild, cherry blossom trees will open early, around the end of March. If it was a cold winter, the blossom will bloom later, in April. Not all cherry blossom
trees bloom on the same day; a cherry blossom tree in a shadowy place will bloom several days later than a tree in a sunny place. The very end of the blossom is fantastic
too, with cherry blossom flower petals covering the ground and looking like pink snowflakes. “I am always passionate about travelling to Asia which holds a special place in my

MARIE Darke recently turned 80 but is a role model for all ages. Marie has had a keen interest in MG sports cars since university days and now owns several of the British icons. A mother and grandmother, the sprightly Marie is pictured at the 2014 Gold Coast MG Car Club exhibition standing next to her 1972 MG GT V8 Prototype, commonly known as Flame 99. The annual MG Car Club event, where Marie held the position of Marshall, took place at Southport’s Broadwater Parklands in July. The Flame 99, which Marie has owned for “for about 12 years”, was one of the first experimental MGs made with V8 engines in 4cylinder bodies. A range of MGs was on display on the day, with the oldest a 1948 TC and the latest a 2004 ZS. In case you might be wondering, the letters ‘MG’ stand for Morris Garages, owned by William Morris in 1924 when the company’s General Manager and MG founder, Cecil Kimber, designed the first MG and registered the now-famous Octagon as a trademark. Peter and the Wolf - Especially for children, their families and orchestral music lovers on Sunday 14 September at 1pm and 3pm at Helensvale Cultural Centre Auditorium, Cnr Lindfield Road & Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale The Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Mark Turpin create a treat for the children, their families and music lovers of all ages presenting the classic tale of Peter and the Wolf.
In a venue with wonderful views of the whole orchestra, our narrator will tell the tale of Peter and his grandfather and their adventures with the wolf in the forest. Original visuals on the big screen will illustrate the story while the orchestra performs the descriptive music. The characters in the story are portrayed by instruments in the orchestra. The bird is played by the flute, the cat is the clarinet, the duck is the oboe, the grandfather is the bassoon and the wolf is the French Horns. Peter, the star of the story, is portrayed by the whole string family, the violins, violas, cellos and double basses and the percussion section represents the hunters. Conductor Mark Turpin says, “Peter and the Wolf” is not only a favourite orchestral work for children but also a challenging and exposed work to perform for our musicians. Instruments of the orchestra illustrate each character in the story. This work is performed to teach children about the instruments of the orchestra as well as being enjoyed by music lovers of all ages”. Two concerts will run during the afternoon to cater for the demand and each concert will be 1 hour in length. Children will be able to enjoy activities at the Helensvale Library prior to each concert. Living and enjoying life to the full by Donna Mroz Turcic
Nancy and John Smithyman are pictured at their market stall amongst Nancy’s recycled creations.
STOP to have a chat with Nancy Smithyman and you discover that there is much more to this outgoing Palm Beach senior than meets the eye. Spotted at her colourful stall at the roving Sunday Art and Craft Market held at Broadbeach on this occasion, textile artist Nancy, almost 71, perhaps hasn’t ‘done it all’, as the saying goes, but she sure has done—and continues to do—plenty. A mother of four and grandmother to seven, it’s been 15 years now that Nancy has been creating one-off girl’s and women’s denim handbags out of recycled Op Shop clothing and accessories such as hair clips, bracelets and belts. The only two things Nancy buys new to create the eye-catching and popular items that each take about ½ day to make are bamboo handles and metal closing clasps. At one stage Nancy and artist husband John, who would incorporate his love of outback hues into his paintings, caravanned through various parts of Australia for six months
each year for six years. Nancy made her first bamboo-handled bags during a stay in Alice Springs. A deft hand at quilt making, she says quilts are a labour of love. Nancy “was a nurse, a long, long time ago” when she left school at 16; then a shearers’ cook “amongst many other things” on a Tasmanian sheep and cattle station while having her four children. A single Mother of four, Nancy met John and the family moved to Geelong, Victoria, where Nancy “worked in many things part time.” In 1984/85 Nancy went to university, for the first
time, at age 40 “after the kids had grown up” and, in 1986, worked as a Welfare Officer in Aged Care and Family Day Care in local government. Nancy later built an art gallery in Torquay, Victoria; then purchased a post office “before retirement” she laughs. After supposed “retirement”, all Nancy wanted to do was patchwork quilting and attend the gym. Not surprisingly, she did both. And more. No doubt there’s still much to be told about Nancy Smithyman’s interesting life. Maybe she can be persuaded to write a book.
