Student Leaders lend a hand for charity
Pictured with other volunteers, including from Runaway Bay Lions Club, are Coombabah State High School Student Leaders, everyone working together washing up
THE occasion was Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea as held at Paradise Point Uniting Church to raise money for the Cancer Council Queensland. With over 30 tables of guests expected to enjoy the fundraiser, it was the job of many volunteers to not only set up the garden venue (including marquees) and then put everything away at the end of the day, but to ensure the event ran smoothly, which it did. Among the willing helpers were Year 11 and 12 Student Leaders from Coombabah State High School, Student Leaders who not only extended warm welcomes to all at the en-
trance; then showed guests to their seats, but who took on the roles of waiters and dishwashers as well. School officials and parents should be pleased - and proud - to know that many comments were heard throughout the Morning Tea about the students’ thoughtfulness, kindness and polite interaction, often with elderly guests and those confined to wheelchairs. The teaming of Paradise Point Uniting Church and Coombabah State High School has proven to be a winning combination at past events too. Well done to all.

TELSTRA recently trialled two world first wearable technology apps with a select group of employees with vision and hearing impairment to understand how they may assist enabling people with disability to become more independent in their work and home life. The vision impaired app enables users who are blind or have vision impairment to receive audio descriptions of objects in front of them. The hearing impaired
app transcribes speech for those who are deaf or have hearing impairment, allowing them to follow a conversation, such as a meeting discussion or a speech at a conference. Dr Hugh Bradlow, Telstra’s Chief Technology Officer said understanding the ways in which wearable technology can enhance the lives of people with disabilities is in its infancy but the future possibilities are exciting. “Wearable technology
will narrow the gap between people with and without disability to undertake everyday tasks in a more efficient and comfortable way. “For example, the vision impaired app can help a person identify the correct bathroom to use when in an unfamiliar environment. The person wearing Google Glass simply focuses at the sign on the door, commands Google Glass to identify the object and then receives an audio description of the sign,”
said DrBradlow. The vision impaired app was trialled by Telstra employee, Kelly Schulz, who experienced the app both at work and at home. “The vision impaired app made many every day activities so much easier, and hands free. I was able to easily distinguish the decaf coffee tin from the full strength one in the kitchen at work, where normally I’d need to ask a colleague. And at home it made it easy to pair up matching socks, when normally near enough is good enough,” said Kelly. Peter Miller, a Telstra employee with hearing impairment was excited to learn the benefits of the hearing impaired app at work as he often finds it difficult to follow conversations in a meeting when there is more than one participant.
“The app translates what’s being said and is right in front of me on the Glass home screen so I am able to still look at people rather than having to look at my computer for a transcript of what’s been said, I feel like a more active participant at meetings now. And because you wear the Glass, there is no need to get to a meeting and set up other technology or request special services, I simply walk in and engage like the rest of the participants; it’s really exciting,” said Peter. Although there are no direct plans to offer this service to a wider group of participants at this stage, this is another step in Telstra’s journey of caring for customers and identifying emerging technologies that will provide a more brilliant connected future for everyone.

community news Tough times ahead as Federal Government axes funding for pension discounts By Jo Marsh TUCKED away in the Federal Government’s 2014 budget is a declaration that could seriously threaten the very lifestyle of many of this country’s seniors. The government has announced it is axing the National Partnership Agreement on Certain Concessions for Pensioners and Seniors Card Holders, starting from July 1, 2014, which will directly affect discounts on council rates, water and sewerage bills, energy bills, car registration and public transport fares. Without the support of Commonwealth funding, it will be the responsibility of state and local governments to make up the shortfall, or pensioners will lose some of their discounts. This would be a serious blow to the standard of living for many already struggling to make ends
Pensioner Lil Beaumont is seriously concerned about rising costs of living due to the Federal Government’s removal of funding for discounts to concession card holders
meet. For 87-year-old pensioner Lil Beaumont, it may mean the decision to suffer the cold of winter rather than turn on the heater. “Every little bit counts.

You start to worry about increases in costs and whether you are going to be able to pay your bills,” she said. “If you are used to being able to pay your bills on time, this is an issue that makes it bad on your nerves.” On top of increases in household bills, reducing access to discounted public transport will leave many seniors isolated. “I’ll be stuck in my home,” a worried Mrs Beaumont said. “I already have to rely on friends or neighbours to give me a lift to things like medical appointments. Train trips to visit relatives will be unaffordable if we have to pay full fare.” Federal Opposition families and payments spokeswoman Jenny Macklin said the budget is cutting $1.3 billion in support and concessions for vital services. “The National Partnership Agreement on Certain Concessions for Pensioners and Seniors Card Holders will be axed from 1 July this year,” Ms Macklin said. “Either the states will have to pick up the bill, or pensioners will go without important discounts for essential services. “Tony Abbott unilaterally abolished the agreement in last week’s budget, without any warning to his Liberal and Labor state and territory colleagues. “This is an additional blow to pensioners, who are also going to have their pensions cut because of Tony Abbott, as well as being slugged with new taxes on fuel and GP visits. “These cuts will hurt more than 600,000
Queensland pensioners, including more than 400,000 full-rate pensioners who currently have no income other than the $20,000 a year they receive from the Age Pension.” Pensioner discounts are jointly funded by the state and federal governments, and in the case of council rates, by local government. The exact impact on individuals is not yet known, although National Seniors Australia (NSA) figures show the average pensioner receives around $800 per annum in concessions. The 2014-15 Budget Review document, available from the Federal Parliamentary Library website, states that “… it is likely that, without this financial assistance, many concessions currently available will be withdrawn or reduced. Any changes will raise the cost of living for pensioners and retirees, particularly in terms of energy bills and transport costs.” Speaking at the NSA Zone Conference in Toowoomba on May 21, NSA president Michael O’Neill said he was “concerned the concessions will be halted”. Mr O’Neill said NSA staff are still working through the figures in an attempt to quantify the proposed cuts. In response to a question from the floor, Mr O’Neill confirmed that the majority of concessions are federally funded. If you are concerned about the issue of cuts to pensioner concessions, then voice your opinion directly to both your local Federal MP and any of the independent Senators as soon as possible, before the budget changes become law.
Do you want to know how to store your vegetables in your fridge, so that they stay fresh for two to four weeks or more? It’s so simple, and it will save you lots of money like I have! Recently I came across a product called “Super Fresh Bags”. These bags store food in the fridge for freshness and longevity. I’m sure most of us Villagers waste fruit and vegetables because they “go off” before we get to use them up completely. Well, this need not happen anymore and the proof is in the pudding. Prior to Christmas I put various items in these bags to test. On returning from holidays some three weeks later, all of my vegetables were as I left Roslyn Roberts of Hammond Village, Coombabah, QLD them in the refrigerator – fresh and ready to eat. In fact, I now have had some spring onions stored for over six weeks and they are still fresh. My personal experience with these bags has been nothing short of fantastic and for what it is worth I want to share this with you. The bags pay for themselves in no time. And the best part is the bags are washable and reusable over and over again. I have been using my bags for over 12 months now and they are still going strong. You will find that these bags have a myriad of uses and it is just a matter of experimenting. The bags have a very minimal cost and are posted free all over Australia. Go on line and visit www.superfreshbags.com.au for more information or to make a purchase or if you don’t have access to a computer call

Bumpers will look like new
WE’VE all done it before, got a little too wide when pulling into the car park, reversed into the hubby’s trailer and hugged the garage walls a little too closely. There is nothing more embarrassing than driving around in a scratched car but most of the time it’s not bad enough to pay high premiums on insurance or panel beaters to have fixed. Not to mention having to
live without your car for a day or two while it is getting fixed, it is inconvenient and frustrating. Fortunately, a business has noticed this gap in the market or car repairs and has provided a service that is convenient, professional and fast. BumperTech will come to where your vehicle is parked and repair scrapes, scratches and those unsightly damaged bumpers and minor panel damage. Forget searching high and low for matching touch-up paint, BumperTech uses a Dupont mini paint system that matches the colours. BumperTech is a cost effective repair service when compared to an insurance claim. “Research shows a well presented car brings maximum price and speedy sale,” John Cowan, BumperTech representative said. A five year warranty is given with every job. For an obligation-free quote on BumperTech services phone 0412 241 014.

In the health space, consumers will be hit by the cumulative effect of substantial increases in the PBS safety net thresholds and co-payments; and the extension of the muchspeculated GP co-payment to pathology and imaging services. “The cumulative cost of these health changes will be keenly felt by older Australians on small, fixed incomes,” said National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill. On the bright side, the government has announced Restart, a $10,000 wage subsidy paid over two years to businesses that hire mature age people, including pensioners. “The wage subsidy is a first step.

community news Federal budget implications for seniors
AGED pensioners will be hit with slower growth in their pension payments and tightened eligibility tests from 2017, under the Coalition’s first budget which seeks to curtail the rapidly expanding costs of the ageing population. But the federal budget has seen the government dismiss one of the key recommendations of the Commission of Audit - to include the family home in the asset test for the aged pension. The Abbott government has confirmed the pension age will rise to 70 by 2035. In what may be an opportunity for the increasing army of older job-seekers, the government will pay subsidies of up to $10,000
over two years to employers who hire mature workers - those over 50. From September 2017 onwards, the aged pension will no longer grow in line with average male weekly earnings - instead it will be indexed twice a year against inflation. Mr Hockey said the move would ensure the government could “make pensions sustainable and affordable for decades to come”. The changes to indexation for the aged pension, along with parenting payments, carers payments, Veteran Affairs pensions and the Disability Support Pensions, will save the government close to $400 million in 2017-18 alone.
Further savings of half a billion in 2017-18 will be made by freezing the eligibility thresholds for pension payments from 1 July 2017. That means the amount pensioners can earn before their payments start being reduced, which is currently up to $156 a fortnight, will not increase year on year. The Coalition will also move to tighten the eligibility criteria for full- or part-pension payments, by determining that older Australians are earning a higher rate on investments over $30,000. The Seniors Supplement, which provided annual payments of $876.20 for single adults who were eligible for the Common-
wealth Seniors Health Card, and $1320.80 for couples, has been scrapped. And the eligibility criteria around the health card has been tightened, now taking into account untaxed superannuation. But the income thresholds for the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card will be indexed annually against the Consumer Price Index, which will mean about 27,000 more self-funded retirees will not lose out on the entitlement because of modest changes in their incomes. The Seniors Health Care and Pension Concession Cards have also been hit, with the government axing a range of concessions
which will save the budget $1.3 billion over four years. The Coalition has also scrapped the Mature Age Workers Tax Offset which provided tax concessions of up to $500 for people over 55 who had a
net income from working. Aged care has also been hit in the budget, with the government saving $1.7 billion over six years from 1 July 2018 by slowing the growth in the Commonwealth Home Support Pro-
gram. Another $652 million has been saved over the next four years by scrapping Payroll Tax Supplement payments to eligible aged care providers from 1 January 2015. Source:news.com.au

Electricity costs blow out for older Queenslanders SENIORS in Queensland can expect to see their electricity bills rise by approximately $200 a year after the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) announced significant price increases today. Average electricity charges for smaller senior households will increase by 16 per cent from 1 July 2014 meaning an approximate $200 annual increase on the average bill for seniors. This is much more than the typical residential customer which will face an average 13.6 per cent increase. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said
the charges would hit the hip-pocket of all seniors, especially struggling pensioners. “These increases are again punishing pensioners and other seniors who are low energy users,’’ O’Neill said. “Many will go without their heaters in winters and their fans/air conditioning in summer because they simply can’t afford the escalating prices. “Older Queenslanders entitled to electricity concessions will be watching next week’s state budget with great interest to see if the concessions keep in line with these latest increases. BR O BE ASK ST US AVAI CHUR PR AB LAB ES ICE OU LE GU T O AR UR AN from Arthritis, Back Pain, Swollen Legs, Breathing TE E

Sydney-based Acorn Stairlifts has certainly taken a giant step in lowcost efficiency to overcome the problem that steps create for the disabled or those in advancing years. General manager Doug Jack, who introduced the UK company to Australia eight years ago, says the recurring comment from the many thousands of customers worldwide is: “I wish I had installed my stairlift earlier. Now I can get about my home without becoming exhausted or fearful of falling”. Mr Jack says a stairlift from Acorn is surprisingly affordable, installed quickly and efficiently, and can give back the freedom and independence once enjoyed by our loved ones. “It’s often difficult to face up to decreased mobility caused by ageing or failing health, and the tendency is to battle on,” he said. “But now there’s a solution at the best price for the problem of stairs

Circa 1950 Southport railway precinct comes to life ARE you a miniature train buff? How about a local history enthusiast? Whether the answers are ‘yes’ or ‘no’, everyone is welcome—and encouraged—to visit the midJune model train display at Australia Fair Shopping Centre, Scarborough Street, Southport. Presented by the Miniature Train Club – Gold Coast Inc, a rarely seen Gold Coast historical display will ‘come to life’ for four days (over two weekends) in the form of a circa 1950 layout of the Southport railway precinct. Also on show will be one of the Club’s other exhibition layouts called The Domino Effect, back from a successful showing at the Brisbane Miniature Train Show. Great for all ages, entry to the Australia Fair model train display will be free although gold coin donations will be appreciated. And don’t forget to ask questions—lots of questions. This will be an opportunity to learn about the model railway hobby in general as Miniature Train Club members ‘take
our hobby to the people’. Restoring trust in financial advice for retirees AUSTRALIA needs a robust, independent financial planning and advice industry to ensure retirees receive the best possible advice
for managing their retirement savings. The call comes as Australia’s seniors’ advocacy organisation, COTA Australia, joined
with other consumer interest groups, such as Choice, to warn a Senate Inquiry about the detrimental impact of the proposed amendments to Future of Financial Advice (FOFA) legislation on tens of thousands of older Australians. Sound financial advice, that puts the interest of the consumer first, is more important than ever given changes to the pension age, announced in the recent federal Budget. Ian Yates, COTA Australia chief executive, told the FOFA Hearing of the Senate Economics Committee in Canberra last week that retirees need professionals, independent financial advice, as they have no opportunity to recoup lost investments or assets when financial advisors are swayed by commissions rather than advising on the best outcome for clients. “The proposed changes remove important
safeguards which were put in place following the disasters of Storm Financial and West Point to stop inappropriate products being sold to vulnerable community members,” Mr Yates said. “Just as important as those headline grabbing financial failures are the day to day problems and losses when people don’t get the best advice possible about their hard earned retirement savings,” he adds. According to Mr Yates, weakening those safeguards removes important protections and the recourse for consumers against advisors or salespeople who choose to exploit the loopholes these changes would create. “There is much uncertainty facing this and the next generation of retirees as they make arrangements for their financial security to live as active and as healthy as possible in their
retirement years,” he says. COTA Australia believes trust in financial advice may be restored by a ban on all commissions or third party payments to all financial advisors and financial product sales, ensuring that scaled advice is fully subject to strict best interest protections. community news Call for guarantee on state concessions
Welcome aboard, Aussies Libby and Guy!
OLDER Australians are calling on state and territory governments to maintain seniors’ concessions for electricity, water, public transport and council rates after funding cuts announced in the federal budget. The federal government has abolished its share of funding for the National Partnership Agreement on Certain Concessions for Pensioners Concession Card and Seniors Card Holders. The onus is now on state and territory governments to ensure these concessions continue,
Probus Club of Hastings Point Very happy new Aussies Libby and Guy Metzger were photographed before they even had a chance to open envelopes containing their precious Citizenship Certificates
IN typical Gold Coast fashion, it was a perfect day weatherwise as an estimated 1200-plus people from 70 countries stood side-by-side on the Great Lawn at Southport Broadwater Parklands and repeated the Australian Citizenship Pledge in a moving citizenship ceremony led by fellow immigrant, now Mayor, Tom Tate. Among those who were welcomed as Australians on the day were Libby and Guy Metzger of Robina. Originally from Zimbabwe, the Metzgers came to Australia nine years ago from England after their children moved to this country. Immigrants becoming citizens have a choice of two versions of the Pledge, one mentioning God and the other not. For the information of those born here, the wording of the Citizenship Pledge is: ‘From this time forward (under God) I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey.’
says Michael O’Neill. National Seniors understands that Commonwealth funding for the concessions amounts to around 10 per cent of each state and territory’s budget. National Seniors has written to the premiers and chief ministers in each state and territory calling on them to maintain the value of concessions for people with Pensioner Concession Cards or Seniors Cards. “We are extremely concerned about the impacts that the potential abandonment of concessions for electricity, water, public transport and council rates may have on older Australians,” said National Seniors chief executive Michael

O’Neill. “A single person in receipt of the full age pension receives $842.80 a fortnight amounting to a little over $21,000 per annum. “The loss of concessions ranging across the country from between $1163 to $2564 per year will be a significant hit to those low income earners who already find frugal ways to live. “On top of this the age pension will begin to decline in relative value from 1 September 2017 if proposals to pin indexation of the age pension to CPI proceed. The onus is now on state and territory governments to ensure these concessions continue,” he said. Source: National Seniors

Changes ahead for Australia Post AUSTRALIA Post has confirmed it is going the way of New Zealand, the UK and the USA with the introduction of first and second class stamps. From next year a new system of sending mail will be implemented with people able to choose their speed for letter delivery (regular or priority), similar to first and second class stamps in New Zealand, the UK and USA. The AIR Branch meeting on 12th June will have Russell Lenehan from Centrelink to explain changes to Age Pension eligibility, benefits and concessions introduced in the Federal Budget and what you may need to do to maximise your entitlements. And finally, on 19th July, Mr Steve Ciobo MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury will discuss the effect of the Federal Budget on retirees and be available to answer questions and debate the issues raised by members. Gold Coast AIR President, Mr Robert Grover, said: “Budget changes are likely to affect all Gold Coast retirees. Unfortunately some confusion exists as to how retirees’ circumstances will change and what action they should take. It would be terrible if retirees were unnecessarily disadvantaged simply because they were unaware of the changes and what they should do to minimize their impact. It is for this reason we have opened our meetings to all Gold Coast seniors.” All Gold Coast retirees are welcome to attend. All meetings will be held at 9:30 am at the Broadbeach Seniors’ Centre, 23 T E Peters Drive, (cnr Havana Keys), Broadbeach. A Pacific Palms resident’s personal recommendation: WHEN my husband retired we very soon realised that the age pension, even with the limited superannuation he’d only started late in his working life, simply wasn’t going to be enough for us. We were in the same situation as many people of our generation – ‘asset-rich, but income-poor’. Our home was worth a reasonable amount of money, but we were going to be flatout affording to maintain it, let alone keep up with rate rises, higher insurance costs, and constantly increasing power bills and so on. And yet we were both active, nowhere near ready to give up on getting as much out of life as we possibly could. The last thing we’d ever planned on was spending the rest of our lives moping around the house, wishing we could afford to do the things we’d always looked forward to.

Luckily, we heard about Pacific Palms. For us, their advertising was absolutely spot-on. It was definitely the ‘right place, right time, right price’. We checked it out, and found that after selling our existing home we could buy a really nice spacious home at Pacific Palms (room for the grandkids to visit), plus the four-wheel-drive our plans required, and still have cash-in-hand. How it works is that you buy the house and lease the site it’s on, so you don’t have land rates to
pay, plus in our case even that lease is subsidised because we qualify for what Centrelink calls a Rental Rebate on top of our pension. How good is that? Pacific Palms is a really great place to live. It’s a secure village environment with a real community spirit, and we’ve made lots of new friends. There’s a licensed bowls club with eight rinks, a couple of swimming pools, a community barbecue area, a recreation hall where we have crafts
and bingo and aerobics and so on, and even a little convenience store too. There’s a bus stop right at the entrance, and you can drive into Brisbane in half an hour or go by train, although I prefer Westfield Northlakes which is only a few minutes. Acrylic Dentures vs Chrome Cobalt Alloy Dentures REMOVABLE dentures, or prostheses, are used to replace one or more missing teeth, the reason why this type of prosthesis is referred to as removable is because patients can easily remove and reinsert them as required. An essential step in keeping your smile is to replace teeth, which are missing due to injury or disease. If teeth are missing, the remaining ones will change position, drifting into the adjacent spaces. A removable partial denture fills in the space where teeth are missing and helps to fill out your smile. A denture helps you to properly chew food, a difficult task when you are missing teeth; a denture may also improve speech and prevent a sagging face by providing support for the lips and cheeks. Types of Dentures Dentures fall into two main categories: • Removable Partial Denture: suitable for patients who have one or more teeth missing. • ‘Full’ Dentures: for patients who are missing all of their teeth. Materials used for Dentures Dentures are made of Methyl Methacrylate, a specialized acrylic or plastic suitable for use in the intra oral environment, your mouth. Metal alloy Cobalt Chrome that is an inert material also suitable for use in the intra oral environment, your mouth. Or a combination of both, both materials has pros and cons but overall, Cobalt Chrome Dentures are preferred for partial dentures. Acrylic – Pros • Suitable for most people • Can be fitted as soon as a tooth is removed • Easy to adjust and repair
Cons • Not as strong as Chrome Cobalt, and tend to be larger/bulkier • Can stain and discolour with time Chrome Cobalt Pros • Very strong, thin and light, with excellent aesthetics • Generally designed much smaller than acrylic partials due to the tensile strength of the alloy used • Hot and cold temperature is immediately transferred through the material when eating/drinking which leads to increased comfort Cons • More expensive than acrylic dentures, and more difficult to repair • Not suitable for every patient wanting a denture Is it difficult to eat with a denture? Replacing missing teeth should make eating a more pleasant experience. Begin by eating soft foods and make sure to cut your food into smaller pieces. Chew with both sides of the mouth and keep an even pressure on the denture. Avoid foods that are sticky or hard like caramels or chewing gum. Denture adjustments Over time, adjusting your denture may be necessary. As time wares on, the shape and size of your mouth naturally changes; this can affect the fit of the denture. MORE than 6.1 Million Australians volunteer their time to help others or teach a new skill. One Gold Coast resident has devoted his life to teach photography to local residents. Rain, hail or shine Burleigh Waters resident Anthony Grima has made the trip to The Pines Meeting Room – home of the 60 and Better Programme for a decade. During the 2014 National Volunteer Week, Anthony was awarded a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ by the Programme. Recently, Anthony was also awarded a McPherson Award by Federal Member for McPherson, Karen
Andrews for services for the community. The 80-year-old has been a professional freelance photographer and his skills are invaluable to those who seek them. “I am honoured to win these awards for my community work. It feels great”, said Anthony. “I’ve been a photographer since I was 18. I enjoy passing on any photography skills I have and I feel people are grateful.” “You can read information out of a book, but it’s easy to forget it the next day. When you have a person teaching you and demonstrating, it’s much better to retain information.” “I hope to keep on teach-
ing for another ten years.” His classes are held at The Pines Meeting Room at 1pm on the second Wednesday of each month. Anthony has 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
What a good idea! SENIORS newspaper reader JD wanted to share this idea with other Gold Coast seniors who might be looking for something interesting to do on a budget. Once or twice a week but always Monday to Friday between 8.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m., JD uses her Translink Seniors ‘go’ card with its ‘Free Seniors Travel’ sticker attached to it to travel (‘I love travelling,’ she laughs) to Gold Coast libraries in suburbs other than her own. It’s not that JD doesn’t like her local library (she actually loves it) but she visits it more on Saturday mornings when bus travel isn’t free; then walking to her favourite places. JD spends several hours in the comfort of the libraries, reading a variety of magazines and newspapers; sometimes using the computers; often checking on books, CDs or DVDs that may be of interest to her. Occasionally she even phones ahead to book herself a spot for special library talks or presentations. JD also picks up notices of community happenings, and all of this costs her nothing. A day out for free although she admits she enjoys stopping for a cuppa and sandwich when she is away from home for the full day. JD has bussed to several Gold Coast City libraries including Helensvale, Robina, Southport, Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta—and enjoyed the scenery along the way! Next time you are at a local library, be sure to pick up a free copy of Libraries Calendar of Events—an interesting read in itself—with library locations listed on the back cover.

RSL Care 2013 Christmas appeal put to good use RSL Care’s 2013 Christmas Appeal was one of RSL Care’s most successful appeals to date. RSL Care would like to thank the RSL community for supporting residents, such as World War Two hero Archie Wilson to make the most out of life. The funds raised from the Christmas appeal are being used on wonderful initiatives and items which support our fellow Australians to improve their well-being and independence. The appeal has enabled RSL Care facilities as North as Cairns, as south as Banora Point in New South Wales, and as far west as Longreach to provide programs to improve quality of
life. Funds have been used to help fund a community men’s shed (Cazna Gardens), Garden Canvas Art (Tantula Rise) and Fish and Happy Feet beach wheelchairs (Bowen), to name but a few. RSL Care has recently launched its 2014 Chairman’s Appeal which aims to raise funds to go towards programs and items that support and enhance individuals’ mental, physical and emotional health, through activities that keep them socially connected to their community and enables them to live a healthy and productive life. 25% funding boost for palliative care programs
Speaking at the launch of National Palliative Care Week at the end of May, Minister for Health Peter Dutton announced $52 million in funding over three years for the National Palliative Care Program. ‘This is fantastic news to receive during National Palliative Care Week,’ said Dr Yvonne Luxford, Chief Executive Officer of Palliative Care Australia. ‘It confirms the future of these important quality improvement and educational programs for a further three years.’ The figure of $52 million represents an increase of 25% from the last triennium, although at this stage the guidelines for allocating these funds is not finalised. ‘This funding boost is most welcome,’ said DrLuxford. ‘Palliative Care Australia looks forward to receiving further de-
tails about the mechanisms for allocating these funds and working with the government to ensure that these valuable national programs are well supported to grow and develop.’ The theme for National Palliative Care Week (2531 May) was‘Palliative care is everyone’s business – let’s work together’. The week celebrated the diverse range of people who work in palliative care and the important role they play in ensuring quality care at the end of life for all. ‘Many of these programs are in workforce support and development, and this announcement fits well with the theme of National Palliative Care Week which has a workforce focus,’ said DrLuxford. The announcement followed earlier news that
the World Health Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on palliative care which, among other things, calls for countries to ensure that palliative care is embedded in the basic and continuing education and training for all health workers and becomes a core component of health systems. ‘We thank the government for their commitment to palliative care and building a workforce that is able to meet the needs of dying Australians, their families and carers,’ DrLuxford said. For more information on National Palliative Care visit www.palliative care.org.au.

rated training on the new Oticon Hearing Device called ‘Ria’, which provides excellent sound quality and gives people the freedom to focus more clearly on sounds that they want to hear, even in noisy environments,” explains Michelle. “Interruptions caused by distorted sounds or whistling are significantly reduced thanks to the new technology of a tiny but extremely powerful Inium sound processing chip.” Ria sits within a family of advanced wireless devices using the Inium platform – including Oticon Nera and the most advanced device – the Oticon Alta Hearing Device. Hearing is an extremely personal experience, and Michelle notes that it surprises many to find out that no two people hear sound in exactly the same way. The best listening devices are those that can be customised to meet individual needs. “By playing sound demos, I am able to get input from my clients and then can adjust the Oticon Ria, Nera and Alta to match personal sound preferences, Michelle explains. So for example, if you are a dog lover, the sound of a dog barking may be pleasant to you but not others, or are a passionate music lover and have specific preferences. Therefore people have so much to gain from having a hearing solution personalised to them.” Additionally, all 3 have built-in wireless connectivity. This means the hearing devices can be transformed into a wireless ear devices that can connect wirelessly with landline and cell phones, digital office phones, TVs, MP3 players, video

Keeping older people in the workforce helps to reduce pressure on our health system and with
rich life experiences, they have a lot to offer an employer. They are also a cost effective pool of talent for employers as many only want to work part-time. In addition, the federal government has promised increased subsidies of up to $10,000 over two years to employers who hire mature workers over 50. Our group of four Queensland Seniors newspapers has always employed many older staff – the most mature being 86 years old. They all bring their work ethic and valuable experience to the job. As our banner proclaims our pages are “written for seniors by seniors”. Employers out there, pay attention!
It’s time to ditch the negative stereotypes of ageing and stop age discrimination. It’s against the law and as a society we have more to lose if we don’t utilise the services of people ages 50 onwards. Skills and competence are what count, not age.

Aged Care Complexity Continues - so it’s time you knew the facts DESPITE the Federal Government’s Living Longer Living Better reforms, the aged care industry continues to be plagued by complexity and uncertainty according to Seasons Private Aged Care CEO, Nick Loudon. “The aged care reforms aimed at protecting those entering aged care, have resulted in significant uncertainty both in the industry and across the community more broadly; many would be surprised by the costs to the individual associated with accessing government funded nursing homes and inhome care, as the reform changes become effective from 1 July 2014” he said. Aged Care Forums will be held on the Gold Coast from
Tuesday 17 th June to Saturday 21 st June, where you’ll hear from aged care experts about the reforms and what it means for you. • 17 th June 11am to 1pm – Runaway Bay Community Centre • 19 th June 11am to 1pm – Albert Waterways Community Centre • 21 st June 11am to 1pm – Twin Towns Services Club “One of the big changes is that from 1 July 2014, the reforms will remove the distinction between low and high care and consequently there will be a “bond” payable for all aged care facilities for residents, unless they meet the criteria for exemption,” Mr Loudon said. “Additionally, how much each individual pays for their aged
care, not the level of care they need, will be determined using a strict government Means Test formula – the more an individual has, the more they will pay”. “While the reforms allow for the option to pay a Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) instead of a lump sum “bond”, it should also be noted that residents who elect to pay the DAPdo not receive any of this back from the nursing home on exit,” he said. “The impact of the reforms broadly and the Means Testing Formula specifically will differ for every individual , that’s why it’s so important to ensure you understand exactly what you need to pay and what entitlements may be available – take specialist financial

and legal advice.” According to Mr Loudon for many people, staying at home may be a better option. “Private Home Care can be used as a topup for government services, keeping the cost of care low but the quality of care high. “While staying at home is a good solution for people who have excellent support networks, those that would like the safety and security of 24hour care should consider options such as Private Aged Care to meet their needs; in many instances it will be
a much more affordable option than Government subsidised Residential Nursing Homes. “At Seasons Private Aged Care communities, people live in their own apartments and private in-home care with or without government funding can be affordably provided.” Mr Loudon said Seasons Private Aged Care communities provide 24hour emergency care services and staff are trained to provide all levels of care from low to high care to palliative care to residents in the comfort of their own apartments.

Hobbyist Bob Wilson more than an avid model builder by Donna Mroz Turcic ‘BOB Wilson – Quirky Paradigm Creator’ is the clever tag given this model-making greatgrandfather by his granddaughter, while other of his grandchildren refer to him fittingly as ‘Bob the Builder’. A kind and gentle man with a quiet but quick sense of humour, Bob’s mind is a conveyor belt of non-stop creative ideas that, it could be said, ‘waste not; want not’. No dry products are thrown away in the Wilson household before

Bob has won five Firsts and a Second for his models at the Gold Coast Show over the last six years and is industriously working on his 2014 entry. Show dates are set for Friday August 29 to Sunday August 30 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. New Show location will be the Gold Coast Turf Club. Bob is happily married to Thelma, a volunteer school librarian who, like Bob, believes in staying active. Bob and Thelma first met when both were nurses in Toowoomba; Bob a psychiatric nurse, a job he loved. Between them they share eight children and, according to a smiling Bob, ‘about 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.’

News from THE TWEED Cataracts - All you need to know WHAT is a Cataract? A Cataract is a cloudy lens in the eye. This lens is normally clear but as it gets older it becomes cloudier and eventually starts to interfere with the vision. Most people develop significant cataracts after the age of 65 but in some cases they can occur earlier. At first the cataract
doesn’t affect the vision that much but as it gets worse the vision starts to deteriorate. New glasses may help in the early stages but eventually the lens will become too cloudy to see through properly and cataract surgery will be required. There are no drops or tablets that can treat cataracts.
What does the surgery involve? The surgery is relatively quick and painless and is performed under local anaesthetic. You will only be at the day surgery unit for a few hours before retuning home. Your surgeon will remove the cataract and replace it with a clear, artificial lens. The new lens is chosen to ensure

good distance vision but glasses will still be required for reading. Some people may have a condition called astigmatism. This happens when the front of the eye is shaped a bit like a rugby ball rather than a soccer ball. It creates distortion and requires a more complex and expensive prescription of glasses to improve the vision. The Eye Care Clinic is able to offer cataract surgery that corrects the astigmatism and provides good distance vision without the need for glasses. How do I know if I have a cataract? If you have noticed that the vision is no longer as clear as it used to be you should see your Optometrist who will refer you to an Ophthalmologist (Eye surgeon) if required. Alternatively, your GP can make the referral if you already know that you have cataracts. At the Eye Care Clinic, if you have private insurance we direct bill your health fund and there is NO GAP to pay.
TWIN Towns Day VIEW’s 46th Birthday celebrations went off so well with all the ladies coming along dressed in red. Entertainment by Greg Sheilds had the ladies singing and dancing. WORLD CONTINENCE AWARENESS WEEK 23RD - 29TH JUNE
Continence Week 23rd to 29th June 2014 IF you suffer from incontinence you’re not alone - almost 4.8 million Australians are affected by this sometimes embarrassing condition. It affects both men and women, regardless of age or background but thankfully it can be treated, managed and in many cases cured. Continence pads can help you to lead a normal life feeling dry and comfortable. It is, however, still important to work on improving your continence as much as possible. Managing everyday life when you or the person you are caring for is affected by incontinence can be challenging, but with forward planning (and a little bit of trial and error), most people find a routine that allows them to live their life to the fullest. Many people are too embarrassed to talk to their doctor about urinary incontinence or are confused by what incontinence actually is. It is important for sufferers to tell their doctor about all their symptoms, no matter how embarrassing or trivial they may find them.
Fed up with your pelvic floor problems? No wonder she was not amused!
At the time of her death Queen Victoria was found to have a serious pelvic floor problem which she had endured in silence for years. We now know that problems of pelvic floor prolapse and/or bladder leakage seriously affect up to 1 in 6 women. Happily, unlike in the heyday of the British Empire, today there are many highly effective treatments for these embarrassing problems, including the wave brilliance chair, physiotherapy and tablet treatments. Minimally invasive keyhole surgery is also an option. Associate Professor Malcolm Frazer is a certified subspecialist in the management of these conditions. For more information, call our friendly staff on 07 5564 9300 or visit our website www.malcolmfrazer.com.au and start smiling again . . .

Do you shy away from life because of a leaky bladder?
Continence a silent epidemic: physiotherapy treatment can help ACTIVE Rehabilitation Physiotherapy has been providing physiotherapy services to Queenslanders for more than 30 years. As part of an ongoing commitment to improving access to healthcare services in the community, Active Rehabilitation has a specific focus on the treatment of continence. As part of this initiative, they are taking part in this year’s World Continence Week from June 23 to 29. Women’s health physiotherapist Alexandra Diggles and men’s health physiotherapist Jason Crow bring years of experience as part of Active Rehabilitation Physiotherapy. Both have completed post graduate continence training, have years of experience in the treatment of continence related issues and boast an impressive list of success with continence clients. We asked Alexandra and Jason to give us a rundown on what people need to know about continence physiotherapy. What should I expect from physiotherapy? To begin, your physio-
therapist will assess your condition, diagnose any problems and help you understand what is wrong. They will work with you to develop a treatment plan that takes into account your lifestyle, goals, leisure activities, and general health. Throughout the treatment program, we will evaluate your progress at regular intervals and modify treatment and goals when necessary. Wherever possible, we will also work with you to help you learn to manage your condition independently for the longer term. Do I need a referral? A doctor’s referral is not necessary to see a continence physiotherapist in private practice, although we frequently work in partnership with your doctor to plan and manage treatment for continence conditions. What is physiotherapy continence treatment? We have a large group of specially trained physiotherapists who can help treat the causes of leakage and frequent dashes to the toilet.
Our specially trained physiotherapists can help with specific strengthening to prevent leakages and frequent dashes to the toilet. Your physiotherapy assessment and treatment may include: • Identifying your pelvic floor muscles using Ultrasound and/ or Urostym technology • Teaching good bladder and bowel habits • Strategies for incontinence management • Specific exercises for pelvic floor muscle strengthening and endurance.

Treatment may include, learning how to correctly activate and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, teaching good bladder and bowel habits, sharing strategies for incontinence management and teaching holistic exercises to assist general health and well-being. What makes your continence clinic different from other clinics? Active Rehab uses the latest technology to provide up-to-date and evidence-based assessment and treatment. We use a combination of diagnostic ultrasound, urostym biofeedback
and uroflowmetry to provide accurate results and valuable information for treatment. Does continence treatment work? Yes, it does! Whether you’re young or old, active or taking it easy, there is a good chance you could benefit from physiotherapy. Our advice and exercise can help you prevent problems from returning or even from happening in the first place. In fact, Australian research has shown that specific physiotherapy treatment cured 84% of patients with as few as five visits.
Don’t let asthma put a dampener on things EVEN though asthma is a condition affecting the respiratory system, it can often have other impacts that aren’t quite as obvious. Chronic coughing from conditions such as asthma contributes significantly to the risk of bladder leakage – also called stress urinary incontinence. The reason for this essentially comes down to physics; it’s the result of greater downward force on the bladder (caused by the sneeze or cough) than the closure force of the uri-
nary sphincter. The same thing can happen when people laugh or exercise. When chronic coughing due to asthma, smoking or other lung conditions goes unchecked for a period of time, it can end up straining and weakening the pelvic floor muscles. One of the most important things we can do to help prevent this happening is to strengthen our pelvic floor muscles. They’re the sling-shaped muscles suspended from the tail bone to the public bone and between the sitting

DR Malcolm Frazer is one of only two certified Urogynaecologist practising on the Gold Coast. To achieve certification from the Royal Australasian College in this field candidates have to undertake three years of further specialised training in pelvic floor prolapse, incontinence and other female bladder disorders, and pass a tough exam, and this is in addition to the years of study required to become a fully qualified Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. He has been a certified Urogynaecologist practising on the Gold Coast for over 20 years. Dr Frazer is currently the vice chairman of the Australasian Society of Urogynaecology (UGSA) as well as the Chairman of the subspecialty committee of the Royal Australasian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG). bones. As well as holding up our intestines, bladder and other pelvic organs they help close off our bladder and rectum. Studies have shown consistently that pelvic floor exercises, when done correctly, reduce the likelihood of stress urinary incontinence. The fact of the matter is that it’s not normal to have bladder leakage – light or otherwise. In the majority of cases it is preventable and quite treatable. If we ignore urinary incon-
tinence, it will only get worse. There’s plenty we can do about it. For a start, see a health professional and treat the asthma or chronic cough. A LUXURY sleeper train service that a Japanese rail company will introduce in spring 2017 has an openair deck for passengers to take in the sights and even one car set aside for just a single person or family. The target customers for JR West’s new sleeper train are recently retired people with money and time on their hands. “We hope to use this train as a catalyst to promote tourism in the areas it will serve,” the president of JR West Seiji Manabe told reporters. “We will keep the fares as reasonable as possible.” The sleek sleeper train, which is still in the design phase, will provide passengers with the chance to savor western Japan’s traditional arts, food and scenery. As with Kyushu Railway Co.’s luxury sleeper train, the Nanatsuboshi (Seven Stars), the 10-car train can accommodate 30 passengers. Six of the cars are designated sleeper cars, five of which have three compartments each. The most expensive car is given over to a luxury suite comprising a bedroom, sitting room, closets and bathing area. The remaining cars will serve as a dining car, a lounge car and two viewing cars, located at both ends of the train. On the rear viewing car, an open-air deck will allow passengers to breathe in the fresh air. JR West say the train will be painted green so that it blends in with the surrounding scenery. The company envisions it operating from the Keihanshin region, an area that covers Kyoto, Osaka and Kobe to the Sea of Japan side, and around the Setouchi region of the main island of Honshu.

Rail buffs on the move THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which
is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal

departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination. Like the sound of the above ? The Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) is now in it’s 57th year of operating rail tours. Over 980
excursions operated by both steam and diesel hauled trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic
tour in travel of a bygone era – travelling in style in the heritage carriages. Join us for a mystery day out by ICE train on Saturday June 21st. We don’t tell you where we are going but head off to a country destination and have lunch at an historic old pub before returning to the City mid afternoon. Nambour Garden Expo is the destination in July. The train steams through the scenic Glasshouse Mountains, past pineapple fields, and the lush Sunshine Coast Hinterland enroute to Nambour for the large garden event. There is also the option of staying on the train and continue to the interesting little village of Yandina. In August come and escape with us on a two day tour by special rail motor to Stanthorpe and Wallangarra to celebrate the end of winter. There is great scenery across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt region and there is no better way to see it then from the comfort of the heritage rail motor. Looking for an escape to the north? In November we are running a 5 day daylight rail tour from Brisbane to Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands. Heritage diesel 1620 will haul this special farewell tour to the Lander series air conditioned carriages which are being withdrawn from traffic later this year. To book or order a brochure phone our office on 3252 1759 between 10am and 3.00pm Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A recorded message operates at other times. HOLIDAY & Leisure Orpheus lives again in Queensland There’s an emphasis on fresh seafood [often from guests’ fishing trips], prime meats, vegetables and herbs from his garden, and spices from his native Indonesia. The cuisine is a fusion of flavours and textures that’s mouth watering, and has that knack of leaving you wanting more. The wine list, naturally, is formidable. Activities range from doing nothing at all to kayaking, fishing,
By Phil Hawkes THERE’S been a resort on Orpheus Island in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park for years…since 1931, in fact. It’s flown largely under the radar, perhaps overwhelmed by more developed and better promoted islands in the Whitsundays and around the Cairns/Port
Douglas area. But Orpheus, 80 kms north of Townsville, now has a new lease of life thanks to entrepreneur Chris Morris and his Colonial Leisure Group with a $20 million investment to create, as he puts it, a special destination of “laid back luxury”. With only 14 rooms and suites, it’s hardly crowded. In fact, at any

given time it seems as if there are more staff than guests…ideal for that “getting away from it all” feeling. The accommodation is Aussie-style, not pretentiously Balinese or anything else, but everything including the aircon and flat-screen TV works, and the fluffy towels, the fittings and the bathrooms are spotlessly clean. All rooms have pri-
snorkelling and swimming in the 25 metre horizon pool. There are some great walks across the island or if that’s too strenuous you can take a motorised dinghy to explore the bays, with a picnic lunch on a deserted beach where clothes and inhibitions are superfluous. The coup de grace, however, is getting to and from Orpheus. It’s a helicopter ride from Townsville or Cairns so
the adventure starts when you step into the Nautilus Aviation chopper, swoop low over the reefs and adjoining islands, and land at “Orpheus Island International Heliport”. No passport required! It’s time Orpheus emerged from the shadows of its larger neighbours, and its new standard of luxury will no doubt help make that a reality. www.orpheus.com.au

The Tallai Country Golf Club will be the venue for a four-week exhibit of the d’Arcy Doyle Sports Art Award for sports-themed paintings and caricatures, while Boomerang Farm in the Mudgeeraba hinterland will host an outdoor display of Sculpture Award entries. The final twelve days of the 2014 d’Arcy Doyle Arts Festival will include an exhibition of the 400 artworks that are to form the d’Arcy Doyle Art Awards.
This event is set for Mudgeeraba Memorial Hall, together with a programme of twilight entertainment by dancers, vocalists and choirs. Also on show at this location will be the Junior d’Arcy Doyle Art Awards, pro-
viding a display platform for talented young artists. Pottery and ceramics will be on view in the Mudgeeraba Shopping Centre. For further information, please visit: www.darcy doyleartawards.com.au.

Gaudi or Gawdy?
MOST Aussies probably have never heard of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. However, to residents of Barcelona, his name is synonymous with their city. Gaudi’s style is unique and his buildings instantly recognisable. He took much of his inspiration from nature, emulating the curves and natural forms found in plants and animals. He abhorred straight lines and flat surfaces. Consequently, his constructions are a strange combination of bends and flowing lines with lavish use of odd colours. Gaudi (pronounced gowDEE) lived from 1852 till 1926. Much of his work was centred on Barcelona and many buildings in the city are recognisable as his inspiration. Casa Battlo is a multi-storied house in the heart of Barcelona and is open to the public to view his work. None of its windows are rectangular, doors are not flat, walls are curved, ceilings twist with different textures and finishes, weird shapes emerge from surfaces, chimneys are bent, even the floors are not level. Gaudi’s creative genius would have been a headache for the builders. To traditionalists, his style is totally over-thetop. You either love it or hate it. His crowning masterpiece is the Sagrada Familia or Temple of the Sacred Family, a huge Roman Catholic church. Work began on this iconic structure in 1882 and it is
still unfinished, but estimates guess at a completion around 2028. Gaudi devoted much of his life to this project and it was less than a quarter complete when he died. At one stage he remarked, “My client is not in a hurry.” Teams of architects have continued the work. It is totally funded by tourist visits and donations, with no support from government or church sources. The edifice is intended to have a total of 18 spires of varying heights. Their completion will make Sagrada Familia the tallest church building in the world. Construction cranes dominate the skyline. It will have three grand facades. The Nativity Façade and the Passion Façade are complete while the Glory Façade, still undergoing work, will be the largest. They are all heavily ornate in Gaudi’s inimitable style. The exterior looks somewhat like melting concrete, flowing down under gravity – the work of a madman or a genius? The interior is in the shape of a Latin cross with five aisles. The detail and complexity are unbelievable and difficult to comprehend. One wonders how a single person could have conceived such a complex design. Each piece in the puzzle is unique and required individual construction by painstaking artisans using complicated moulds. Gold leaf adorns many decorations. The church

An exotic tale through Arabian Nights THE Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra and Conductor Mark Turpin weave their exotic tale through Arabian Nights, a program of orchestral
music to be held at the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra Centre, Community Drive, Ashmore on Sunday 27th July at 2.30pm. The venue will be trans-
formed into an Arabian tent in the desert complete with rugs, cushions and woven baskets while the greatest story ever told, Scheherazade by Rimsky Korsakov, entrances the audience. Composers, especially those in the 1800’s, began exploring the exotic east, following the silk trail through Persia and travelling to Morrocco and darkest Africa. The new sounds delighted them and a wealth of orchestral music was created. The orchestra will also perform In a Persian Market by Ketelby, Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances which features the melody now famous as Strangers in Paradise, Arabian Dances by both Grieg and Tchaikovsky,

City’s mobile app extends its reach to create a better city REPORTING illegal dumping, an abandoned vehicle, a pothole or a water leak is now easier and faster with the help of the City of Gold Coast’s mobile phone app. The app was launched in July 2013 and was first used so residents could report graffiti. New functions recently added to the app include abandoned vehicles and shopping trolleys, water leaks, potholes, illegal dumping, street sweeping, park bins, footpaths, street signs and parking. Mayor Tom Tate said the app had already proved popular, with 2,200 downloads and 1,400 reports logged since July 2013. “We’re hoping more residents will download the app and use it to report any of these issues in an effort to make our city better,” he said. “It’s as simple as taking a photo of the abandoned car, or dumped rubbish, or water leak, entering some basic details about it and submitting it. “The photo, along with its GPS location, is immediately sent to City of Gold Coast. Once the issue has been reviewed (during normal business hours), we will arrange for the necessary action to be taken. “When customers submit a report, they will receive real time feedback and the ability to view other public reports logged in the area at the same time. “This app certainly enables residents to contact us more quickly and helps us with our efforts to create a cleaner, safer city.” Cr Tate said the City’s Local Law officers always investigated reports of abandoned vehicles and determined what action needed to be taken, with officers first establishing if a vehicle was actually abandoned, or left unattended for a valid reason. “Most abandoned vehicles are removed within a week of being reported,” he said. In the 2013-14 financial year to date, 2622 abandoned vehicles have been reported, with 22 of these reported via the mobile app since it went live last December. Cr Tate said the next addition to the app was anticipated to be pest management (wild dogs, vermin, mosquitoes) which could be included later this year. The app is available for iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod) An-
droid and Windows phones. Find out more on the Mobile apps page at www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au. If you do not have a smart phone but need to report an abandoned vehicle, you can download the Abandoned Vehicle Service Request Form from our website or phone 07 5581 6284.
