IT’S official - older people who engage with the world around them are happier and healthier. While physical activity and healthy eating are part of our good health, social connections are also vital for maximising health and happiness in older age. Someone with high levels of social activity has 43 percent less disability than someone who has low levels of social activity, and about half the rate of cognitive decline. Some of the greatest transitions in life occur in older age, including retiring, downsizing, or losing social ties. All of these changes have their effects but the secret to staying healthy as we age is having a good social life and staying active. Queensland Seniors Week, our annual celebration of the contributions and achievements of seniors will be held this year from 16th to 24th August and a veritable smorgasbord of events is on offer. So dip into our calendar on pages 23 to 30 and find something you will enjoy or maybe even try something completely new. Take your pick from croquet, computer tips, concerts, morning teas, lawn bowls, genealogy, writers’ groups – the list goes on and there’s something for everyone, including many free activities. Our two local councils support and promote a range of events during Seniors Week, to encourage us to continue to participate in all aspects of community life. Let’s end our winter hibernation, start sharing ourselves around and celebrating the things we can still do.

QCWA Young Leaders Leadership School 2014 The QCWA Young Leaders Leadership School will be on in September and once again will promote leadership roles and life skills for young women. Their new log and newly named group, The Young Leaders, has been a long time in the development and will proudly be on show at the Leadership School. The history of this group dates back to 1930, where the QCWA formed the QCWA Younger Sets. This allowed girls and young women the opportunity to learn many skills, which included public

speaking and dress making. The girls made many friends over the years and these were lifelong. At the schools they learned about cooking and handcrafts and there was a “QCWA Younger Setter of the Year’’ awarded each year. Today the girls have expanded their knowledge in many fields. They now call themselves the QCWA Young Leaders and have a new logo to go with their new name. The first Leadership School was held in 1948 at Lota. This year the Young Leaders Leader-

ship School will be held from the 21st- 26th of September at the Apex Camp Mudjimba on the Sunshine Coast near Maroochydore. This year the girls will take part in workshops, which will include learning positions such as President, Treasurer and International Officer and many others. The girls will have several guest speakers including oneon-one driver awareness, learning about astronomy and finding out about ‘citrus’ will be some of the activities the girls will take part in. Each year the Young Leader members also take part in yearly competitions. These include cooking, handcrafts, photography and many more. The International section depicts the wide array of knowledge the girls learn when studying other countries. A formal dinner is one of the highlights where the Miss Young Leader is announced. The girls will also have another dinner which this year has the theme of ‘Tropical Dressup’. This is being held to raise awareness about juvenile diabetes. If you would like to find out more about the QCWA Young Leaders, contact State Leader Serenette Crombie at serenettecrombie @hotmail.com.

How will the carbon tax repeal affect you?

ELECTRICITY and gas prices for EnergyAustralia residential and small business customers will fall after the Federal Senate approved the carbon price repeal, Executive Manager – Corporate Affairs, Clare Savage has said. With EnergyAustralia no longer required to pay for carbon, the savings will be passed onto households and backdated to 1 July, 2014. “We understand customers are facing cost of living pressures and the repeal means electricity prices will now drop,” Ms Savage said. “We have been clear we will pass on the savings to households once the Federal Government stops collecting the tax from us. “The carbon price removal will impact electricity and gas costs differently for each user as it will depend on their current tariff, where they live

and how much energy they use. “We will notify customers in the coming weeks about the pricing changes and what that will mean for them.” Ms Savage said work was well advanced on removing the carbon component from the hundreds of different products and tariffs. “Unfortunately implementing system changes to remove carbon is not as simple as pressing a button - altering prices is a highly complex process and it’s important we make sure the changes are done correctly,” she said. The carbon component will be removed from prices by mid-September. The backdated savings will be provided as a credit on household bills. Individual credits will flow to customers according to their billing cycle. Media release: Energy Australia

PIN only for your card from 1st August

ON 1st August 2014, Australia will phase out accepting signature as a valid form of authorisation on chipenabled credit and debit cards. You will have to use a PIN (Personal Identification Number). So make sure you are prepared for this change. Without a valid form of authorisation, you could find yourself unable to pay for goods including petrol and groceries. To ensure successful transactions at the checkout after 1st August become PINwise today.” The move to PIN is an overdue update to the nation’s payment technology that will make transacting the safest it’s ever been; however as with any behavioural change, for some the new practice may take some getting used to. Choose a PIN that is memorable but not crackable. Don’t use the numbers on the card, your birthday, or choose repetitive or consecutive numbers that are easy to guess. Devise a system that works for you

and choose something that is memorable for you to recall but difficult for others to guess. And remember, don’t share your PIN with anyone else. When it comes to preparing, allow at least two weeks to become PINwise. In some cases it can take as little as 10 seconds to update your PIN, for others it can take a couple of days. In any case, the more time you leave to practice and familiariseyourself with increased PIN use, the better. Starting with some of the nation’s largest merchants, the move will see all of Australia’s 800,000 merchant payment terminals undergo updates to no longer accept signature as the main form of card authorisation for most Australian cardholders. There will be no change to contactless or online transactions. Signature will still be a valid form of payment authorisation for visitors from overseas.

SUNSHINE Coast Council will move into the role of major sponsor when it hands the community the leading reins to two of the Coast’s much-loved Christmas Carols this year. Community Programs Portfolio Chair, Councillor Jenny McKay today announced that the Carols at Cotton Tree and Carols on Kings community events will now be delivered by local organisation, Calvary Christian Church, to encourage the successful events to continue to cater for a growing community. “Earlier this year, Council sought registrations of interest from local based not-for-profit organisations to produce the Cotton Tree and Kings Beach traditional carols events - with Council as a major sponsor,” Cr McKay said. At its Ordinary Meeting in January 2014, Council also resolved to approach the organisers of identified, high profile, established community Christmas Carol events to offer sponsorship arrangements.

Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer with Pastor Kerrin Wallis and representatives from Calvary Christian Church

Coolum Christmas in the Park, Glasshouse Country Community Carols and Nambour Community Carols will also benefit from Council sponsorship. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said it’s exciting to see this Council support which will lift the quality and profile of regionally significant festive events which includes the Glasshouse Country Carols in Beerwah. Division 9 Councillor, Steven Robinson said community festive events, such as the Coolum Christmas in the

Park, are highly valued by Council and this level of support reinforces that message. Divisional representative for the Nambour Community Carols, Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said Council recognises and supports the community in delivering these valued festive events. Councillor Jenny McKay said Council intends to form strong partnerships with the community and develop the capacity for these groups to grow their events, attracting new audiences.

“The new approach reflects extensive community and Council consultation undertaken over the past two years and will be continually reviewed to ensure the Sunshine Cost remains a place of family-focussed, free celebrations during this special time of the year,” Cr McKay said. Sunshine Coast Council promotes and supports over 50 community carols events and provides funding through the Community Grants Festive Season category – entries open August 1 and close September 15.

Give older workers a chance IF the federal government is serious about extending the working life of the average Australian, it must fund research that will identify the skills older workers lack, the characteristics employers are looking for, and other barriers that keep older people out of the workforce, says human resources expert, Dr Keri Spooner. Dr Spooner, who is a senior academic in the management discipline group at the University of Tasmania (UTS), tells Wendy Frew from UTS that “we have always known we would face an ageing population and that any government would try to restrict access to the age pension”. However, she adds, if older people end up “on the dole” or on disability pensions, all Australia would have achieved is a loss of dignity for older people. “We can also be confident that older workers will cope better in the workforce if given half a chance,” says Dr Spooner. “There is a huge amount of research to show that some employers do want to hire older workers,” she says, adding that they are attracted to their experience, maturity and reliability. Hardware chain Bunnings and one of Australia’s biggest banks, Westpac, are reportedly among the companies seeking older workers. “Who are these companies employing? Ex-bankers, accountants, lawyers, people with good communication skills. Ex-school teachers are working in call centres, former nurses are even selling medical goods.” UTS Professor Susan Thorp, whose research focuses on retirement savings and long horizon wealth management, says that under existing rules, a person born in 1964 will have seven years between gaining ac-

cess to their superannuation at the age of 60 and being eligible for the age pension at 67. On average, people have only $200,000 in superannuation when they retire, she adds. “Seven years is a long time in self funded retirement – enough to use up $200,000 if you withdraw annual income roughly equal to the full pension. “If someone faces a gap between getting their super and getting the pension, they might move onto the disability pension. But what happens if the government tightens the eligibility for that pension? How the government sets the screening standards for the disability pension will make a big difference for many people. “It is not difficult to imagine a range of jobs that people simply can’t keep doing when they are in their 60s or 70s – electricians, plumbers, even farmers – and that could mean you might have to go on to the unemployment benefit, which is very low.” Professor Thorp claims many people overestimate the value of a retirement lump sum compared with a regular income and are unable to work out what a lump sum would mean in annual income. “A superannuation lump sum is likely the biggest amount of money most people have ever seen in one hit. They have to decide what to do with it in that first year of retirement and what to do for the next 25 years. “The uncertainty multiplies because we don’t know how long we are going to live, we don’t know what the government will do to pensions and superannuation rules and we don’t know what the investment markets will do.” Source: agedcareguide.com.au

Graeme says it’s been tough competing against the iPod. “But we’re holding our own and I enjoy talking one-on-one to customers about a particular book or author,” he said. “Holding a real book has a warmth – a special feeling of true substance. “And it’s good to see a lot of children in the shop looking for adventure stories in print. I think a lot of these kids are influenced by their parents and it’s good to see.” Contact Graeme on (07) 5493 4836

PUP deal sells seniors short on financial protections OLDER Australians are stunned by a back room deal between Palmer United and the government which has seen the removal of important financial advice protections introduced after the collapse of Storm and Opes Prime. On Tuesday night Palmer United senators surprised everyone by voting to retain the Coalition’s amended financial advice regulations which remove the best-interest catch-all; scrap the two-yearly optin; end mandatory fee disclosure statements for pre-1 July 2013 customers; and provide for scaled advice. “Australians left destitute by shonky financial advisers are stunned that Palmer United has allowed these changes to stand, said National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill. “After a lifetime of scrimping and saving for retirement, seniors are passionate about transparency in financial advice and fees, he said. “This murky last-minute deal was done behind closed doors and without consumer consultation. “It makes a mockery of the parliamentary process

and it’s a disgrace, he said. “Palmer United’s socalled ‘new consumer protections’ do little or nothing for investors; for example, an annual fee disclosure requirement for post-2013 clients is actually one of the Government’s existing watered-down provisions. Palmer United has sided with the Government to: Remove the requirement that, every two years, financial advisers confirm their clients want to keep paying commissions and fees for services they may no longer receive; Remove the catch-all aspect of the duty to put the client’s interests first and, in doing so, provide a safe harbour for advisers against investors claiming for their losses; Remove the requirement for fee-disclosure statements to be sent to pre-1 July 2013 clients, denying already committed investors transparency afforded to others; Allow for the provision of ‘scaled advice’ which allows advisers to push a particular product without considering the consumer’s overall position. These changes are now in effect. Labor, the Greens,

independent Nick Xenophon and the DLP’s John Madigan all opposed the weakening of financial advice con-

community news Caloundra Family History Research Inc

Ann Swain with member John Finger

CALOUNDRA Family History Research Inc will be holding an Open Day on Saturday 16th August 2014 to celebrate National Family History Month, Sunshine Coast Seniors Week, and to thank our volunteers. The rooms will open from 9.30am to 12.30pm and visitors are

welcome to see the full extent of the Library resources available for research. There will be free advice and help for seniors who are commencing their family history research, and a morning tea will be supplied free of charge, with thanks to sponsorship from C.O.T.A.

(Council of the Ageing). The research facility, accessed through Gate 2 at the Corbould Park Racecourse, has plenty of parking and wheelchair access. All enquiries about the group are welcomed by contacting June on 5493 2679, Roz on 5493 1197, or Dawn on 5492 2208. Email address is caloundrafamilyres@y7mail. com Website is www. caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au and has a map to locate the building. On Thursday 21st August the group will be conducting its Annual General Meeting at 1.30pm in the meeting room at its research facility. Members are asked to attend, to welcome their new Committee and learn of the many exciting upcoming events being organised. Ann Swain, an accom-

plished genealogist, family historian and Fellow of QFHS made another welcome trip to Caloundra to present a talk at the group’s July General Meeting. The subject, not previously touched on by the group, sparked quite an amount of interest, as “A Genetic Look at Family History” was quite insightful. Ann gave some history on the subject and explained

the terminology of genetics before showing how to draw your family health tree. The possible inherited conditions which may show up in family history research were many, and health issues can be traced through the generations on a mapped family tree. Naturally, with such an interesting subject, many questions arose, with Ann being able to answer most.

National Seniors Buderim NATIONAL Seniors Buderim Branch monthly meeting will be held in the Buderim Bowls Club, Elizabeth Street, Buderim at 9.30am on Monday 25 August, morning tea will be served. Cost is 4 dollars per person. Our guest, Colin Dunkerley, will be giving a talk for seniors on the I-Pad. All over 50’s are welcome to join our group of happy seniors who enjoy each other’s company. We have regular outings to places of interest, restaurants and picnics. Contact John 5456 1370.

Removal of consumer protections under FOFA

THE government’s decision to unwind consumer protections is set to undermine trust in financial advisers and banks, and erode the Coalition’s support base. Finance Minister, Mathias Cormann, has announced the government will proceed with plans to scrap key consumer protections embedded in financial advice reforms implemented in the wake of the Storm and Opes Prime collapses. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the government had clearly put big business ahead of consumers. “This refusal to budge will undermine trust in financial advisers and strike at the heart of the Coalition’s support base,” he said. “As the system grows increasingly complex Australians are forced to seek professional help. Instead they’re finding themselves either weighed down by hidden fees or, on the back of shoddy, commission-driven advice, destitute in retirement”. “Australians should not be paying commissions for advice they do not

receive; every investor should see full fee disclosures annually; and we all should know that the nice lady at the bank is being well-rewarded for that product she’s just encouraged us to buy”. Minister Cormann’s FOFA amendments will: Remove the requirement that every two years financial advisers confirm with their clients that they wish to keep paying commissions and fees for services they may no longer be receiving; Remove the catch-all aspect of the duty to put the client’s interests first and, in doing so, provide a safe harbour for advisers against investors claiming for their losses; Remove the requirement for fee-disclosure statements to be sent to pre-1 July 2013 clients, denying already committed investors levels of transparency afforded to others; Allow for the provision of ‘scaled advice’ which will circumvent the ‘best interests’ duty requirement and allow advisers to push a particular product without considering the consumer’s overall position. Big turn out for freehold retirement Open Day WHEN Pebble Beach freehold retirement community near Bribie Island opened the doors of its display homes for a recent open day, staff and residents did not expect so many curious feet to be walking through their doors. Having previously held open days with consistent turn outs and results, the most recent event (marking the completion of the 9th stage of the 13 stage development), defied expectations, attracting a turnout of nearly 200 visitors – double that of previous events. Sales manager Elaine Quinn, considered this a clear sign that the market has well and truly picked up, citing many eager over 50’s buyers vying for limited stock which saw back up contracts signed on a number of homes on the day. “We had an excellent response from buyers from as far north as Townsville and South to Victoria, who love Pebble Beach’s freehold retirement model.’’ ‘Pebble Beach’ is unique in the industry and entitles owners to all the benefits of regular home owners but with the safety and security of a

community environment. There are no exit fees, low body corporate fees and capital gains remain with the owner so you could say it’s the best of both worlds for retirees. With all completed and currently under construction stock sold or under contract, the developer (UDIA award winning Parker Property Group) has bought forward the development of the next stage (10). With pricing now available via the communities website www.pebblebeach.com.au Given the appeal of the Pebble Beach freehold offering and the limited, staged approach to development, those interested or looking to learn more are encouraged to get in touch. “As a developer, we were in the enviable position of having buyers to turn

Residents during Open Day

away. However, it’s not something we like doing. We have buyers patiently waiting for their new homes to be completed so they can move in and get on with enjoying their retirement and all Pebble Beach and the local area has to offer. These are people that would have moved in on the day had we finished homes avail-

able for sale and regret that they hadn’t gotten onto it sooner. The reality of developing property is there is always a lag time between demand and construction, so my advice to anyone interested would be to get onto it!” Mrs Quinn said. Pebble Beach Retirement Community is at 210 Bestmann Road East,

Sandstone Point. It offers quality brand new 2 and 3 bedroom freehold retirement homes with prices starting from $310,950. You can visit Pebble Beach online at www.pebblebeach.com.au or contact the sales office on1800 608 377. Display homes are open Thursday > Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Do you want to know how to store your vegetables in your fridge, so that they stay fresh for two to four weeks or more? It’s so simple, and it will save you lots of money like I have! Recently I came across a product called “Super Fresh Bags”. These bags store food in the fridge for freshness and longevity. I’m sure most of us Villagers waste fruit and vegetables because they “go off” before we get to use them up completely. Well, this need not happen anymore and the proof is in the pudding. Prior to Christmas I put various items in these bags to test. On returning from holidays some three weeks later, all of my vegetables were as I left Roslyn Roberts of Hammond Village, Coombabah, QLD them in the refrigerator – fresh and ready to eat. In fact, I now have had some spring onions stored for over six weeks and they are still fresh. My personal experience with these bags has been nothing short of fantastic and for what it is worth I want to share this with you. The bags pay for themselves in no time. And the best part is the bags are washable and reusable over and over again. I have been using my bags for over 12 months now and they are still going strong. You will find that these bags have a myriad of uses and it is just a matter of experimenting. The bags have a very minimal cost and are posted free all over Australia. Go on line and visit www.superfreshbags.com.au for more information or to make a purchase or if you don’t have access to a computer call

community news Calling for Women’s Weekly Cookbooks RED Cross Shops around Australia have come up with a fabulous way to mark the 100th birthday of Australian Red Cross in August this year, and support the Red Cross Big Cake Bake as well. More than 150 Red Cross Shops from Bowen to Burnie, and Broken Hill to Broome want us to rifle through our kitchens this month to look for any unwanted Women’s Weekly cookbooks in good condition, and 50’s Australian kitchen kitsch. Donate your books and 50’s kitchen kitsch to your nearest Red Cross Shop, and not only will you be helping to create an eye catching centenary window display for your local Red Cross Shop during August, but they will also be able to re-sell the books and kitchen kitsch afterwards, to raise money for the everyday work of Red Cross. Right behind the idea is none other than the amazing Pamela Clark, friend and mentor to a whole generation of Australian cooks, reared on recipes from the pages of Women’s Weekly Cookbooks. Pamela started as a home economist in the cookbook test kitchen, making sure the recipes all worked. This included triple testing recipes for such classics as the Chinese Cooking Class Cookbook, the original Women’s Weekly Cookbook, and the book that everyone has a story about, The Children’s Birthday

Cake Book. Pamela is now the Editorial and Food Director of Australian Women’s Weekly Cookbooks, and can’t wait to get involved in the Big Cake Bake and the 100th birthday of Red Cross. ‘Red Cross, just like The Australian Women’s Weekly has been helping Australians for generations says Pamela. ‘I love a bit of baking and anything that allows people to get together over cake for a good cause, has got to be a brilliant idea.’ To participate in the Big Cake Bake, make sure you register first to receive everything you need to run a successful event, including an information booklet, donation box, posters and lots more. Once registered, a host kit will be sent to you with all the tools. All donations raised from Big Cake Bake will support the everyday work of Red Cross, including programs and services to help some of the most vulnerable people in Australia and further afield. For more information about the Red Cross Big Cake Bake go online to bigcakebake.org.au, email bigcakebake@redcross.org.au, call 1800 652 635 or join the Big Cake Bake online community at facebook.com/BigCakeBake.

The Australian Men’s Shed movement has brought together thousands of men over the past decade to share their interests, learn skills and build lifelong friendships – and this has benefitted not only the communities in which the sheds have been established, but also the men themselves. For men who don’t have a computer at home, they can use the shed’s computer to develop new skills, access websites, email family members and perhaps learn how to pay bills online. Also, all of the Men’s Sheds have a page on beyondblue’s The Shed Online website www.theshedonline.org.au, where they can promote their activities and interact with the broad online community. Research shows that attending a Men’s Shed can improve men’s mental and physical wellbeing by helping them feel socially connected and less lonely. With loneliness and social isolation a growing problem in our communities, establishing a Men’s Shed is one of the best ways to ensure that men in your community stay connected to each other. The sheds often foster a sense of acceptance and create a sense of purpose as the men work together on projects such as making or fixing things for the community, So if there has been talk of starting up a Men’s Shed in your area, please contact the Australian Men’s Shed Association on 1300 550 009 to find out how to access the benefits that they bring. community news Noosa Domain celebrate

Residents enjoying the anniversary celebrations

NOOSA Domain Village reached a milestone in July marking the 5 year anniversary of the first residents occupying the village. To celebrate the occasion, the current residents in Stage 1 invited future residents from Stage 2 and Stage 3 to sample the atmosphere at the residents weekly ‘Happy Hour’. There was plenty of champagne at Noosa Domain, lots of smiling faces and friendly chit-chat, even a few games of pool. Stage 1 of Noosa Domain Village consists of 37 free standing independent living villas, a luxurious community centre, library, cinema, residents bar, gymnasium, heated swimming pool, bowling green and hobby workshop. On the 1st of July 2009, John & Robin Arrell were the first to take the plunge with Trevor & Glennis Browne and Maureen Gillard taking occupancy shortly after. At the celebration, Village Manager Phillip Whittle congratulated the resi-

dents and thanked them all for creating the wonderful culture that exists within the village today. Carmel Porter, Wayne Ford and Lawrie Woods each had echoing sentiments when addressing the gathering of around 70 people, saying how much they enjoyed life in the village and moving into the village was the best decision they have made. Noosa Domain Village currently has Stage 2 under construction with the first new residents eager to move into their new homes at the end of this month. “There is a great deal of interest in the village with strong sales in stage 2 and we already have a number of reservations for stage 3 which we plan to start construction on very soon” said Brian Williams, Village Sales Manager. Local identities’ stories unfold THE stories of some of the Coast’s colourful local identities have been captured in short digital stories as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s 160 Characters project. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said 160 Characters shines the spotlight on the region’s special characters of the past and present, illuminating the richness of the Sunshine Coast’s cultural heritage. “Council aims to work with communities to record, preserve, and share the region’s collective memories and diverse experiences,” Cr McKay said. “The 160 Characters project merges new technologies with the Coast’s intangible heritage – using the visual format of the popular short film to capture the stories of places, people and communities. “Today, our community heritage is often recorded and transmitted using mobile phones, digital cameras and social media applications such as Twitter and Facebook. “The region’s identity and unique char-

acter can be discovered through these personal reflections of living on the Sunshine Coast. “Just released is the intriguing story of long-standing Coast identity Ashley Robinson. “Ashley is a regular columnist with the Sunshine Coast Daily and is recognised for his outstanding Rugby League career and his long association with the hospitality industry on the Sunshine Coast. “Ashley’s story, ‘A Charitable Heart’, reveals his passion for local charities and his commitment to the Mudjimba Island Charity Swim.” The 160 Characters project is funded through the Cultural Heritage Levy. community news Vintage Diamond - The Ultimate Neil Diamond Show STEP back in to the 1970’s as we capture the hits and sound of Neil Diamond’s Vintage years in this twohour Diamond production. Vintage Diamond is a show performance reminiscent to that of the legendary 1972 concert album Hot August Night, recorded live at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The Vintage Diamond show brings us back to the fabulous 1970’s tours that give rise to Neil Diamond’s superstar status and ongoing popularity of worldwide hit songs. Perfectly recapturing the sound, songs, and look of the era, Will Mastromanno (Will Mastro) has enthralled audiences in Australia and abroad, having completed a four-month run on the amazing Norwegian Epic Cruise Line with America’s longest running and most established Artist Tribute show “Legends In Concert” located in Las Vegas and performing to audiences throughout the Eastern & Western Caribbean in the Bahamas, Roatan Honduras, Cozumel Mexico, St Martin, St Thomas and the transatlantic across to Europe/Spain. With over 125 million record sales, 56 singles in Billboard’s Hot 100 and 48 albums on its Top 200 album chart, Neil Diamond is arguably one of the world’s best-selling recording artists of all time. Diamond is among the greatest pop songwriters of the modern age and Vintage Diamond maintains a true representation of what it would have felt like to sit in an audience of an early 70’s Neil Diamond concert creating a dynamic contemporary production. The show begins in true nostalgic form of the 1972 recorded concert with Denim jumpsuit costume identical to Neil’s original attire then transforms with further costume changes to the Jazz Singer. Popular Diamond classics from “Sweet Caroline” to powerful

ballads such as “Love on The Rocks” & The Jazz Singer hit soundtrack “Coming to America”. Forming the Vintage Diamond concept in late 2008, Will was draw to Neil Diamond and his legacy of worldwide hits and was influenced to form his 70’s Vintage tribute and pay homage to the Diamond Legacy. The Vintage Diamond Tribute has successfully entertained audiences of all ages & Diamond fans alike. Laguna Estate - a lifestyle choice IS ‘grandma’s ghetto’ your idea of a retirement village? If so, stop right there! There is nothing further from the truth. In the past, most residents entered these villages aged in their seventies as part of a move to downsize, decrease maintenance responsibilities, experience a greater sense of safety and security, or for health and lifestyle reasons. Today, younger retirees from age 55 are seeing the benefits of relocating to a retirement village, with the emphasis on lifestyle and making the move a liberating experience. To those who say that they are not ready for such a move, many of the residents at Laguna Estate say that they wish they had made the decision earlier. It has given them the freedom to travel, visit family or just pursue new hobbies without any of the worries they previously had with the upkeep and security issues of their previous home. Combining outstanding resort facilities with stylish homes in a fully landscaped environment, this village strikes the perfect balance between privacy and independence whilst encouraging a vibrant and rewarding community in which to live. There are spacious villas and serviced apartments from which

to choose, all in a quiet, peaceful location yet so close to all the vibrant action of Noosa. The range of facilities is cleverly geared towards anyone over the age of 55, whether you are physically active or prefer a quieter lifestyle - and the grandchildren are welcome here. So what will sell you on your decision to make Laguna Estate your home? It is a combination of many things – particularly the smart community facilities and the activities which cater for all lifestyles, but also the quality finish of both the new and the refurbished villas, the resort-style feel, the professional and hugely cheerful staff and the low monthly fees. At some time in the future you may need living assistance but this too is catered for at Laguna Estate with assisted care apartments available. Three meals a day, cleaning, weekly towel & linen changes and 24 hour on-call emergency staff are all part of the service. Laguna Estate is a class act – phone 1800 012 049 for lots more information and an appointment to view this special retirement estate at 21 Lake Weyba Drive, Noosaville. You could soon be making the best choice of your life!

Prostate health problems – a thing of the past? 1 IN 3 men over 50 have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly known as an enlarged prostate, this number rises to nearly 80% of men when they reach 70. While BPH is not fatal like prostate cancer, it can cause a lot of pain and inconveniences. Common symptoms are frequent and painful urination, and for some cases sexual performance is affected. It is no wonder that we have reached epidemic proportions, yet so few men talk openly about it.

For those who have approached their doctors for advice, more often than not, an effective treatment is quickly and conveniently made available. Surgery is usually the last-resort due to the unpleasant nature of the side-effects such as incontinence and impotence. Most cases can be adequately treated with orally taken over-the-counter medication such as the popular Magnus Shield, developed and distributed by Graminex Australia. According to Mr. Indra, spokesperson for Graminex Australia, men in general do tend to be tight-lipped about their current condition. “Its normal for men to feel uncomfortable talking about their prostate and their symptoms (of BPH), that’s okay, we understand, “says Indra, who does his best to personally answer questions from individual callers. He has spoken to many concerned wives whose husbands are reluctant to acknowledge the issue. The key to this problem, he believes is to slowly encourage a culture where men should not feel ashamed to talk about their medical condition, especially if it concerns their “personal equipment”. For the men who are willing to seek help to fight for their health and

well-being, Magnus Shield has proven to be a very effective solution. Bill was suffering from the symptoms in silence on a daily basis and at first believed that it was part of the normal aging process all men go through. That was until he spoke to a close personal friend who suggested that he get some medical advice. This led to him being prescribed some Magnus Shield by his family doctor and the results have been positive thus far. According to Bill, “Since taking Magnus Shield tablets for the past 3 months, I have noticed an improvement. Previously I would go to the loo 5-6 times a night, and now I only go 2-3 times, even less sometimes. Another long-time sufferer Paul, did not depend wait around for help and instead actively sought it out. One day Paul stumbled upon an article written in a health magazine about the prostate and this led to him trying out Magnus Shield for himself. “I found this tablets Magnus Shield from magazine. I found it helps me to empty my bladder in night time, relief the pain while passing water. It really works for me. I’m feeling better now,” says Paul. The good news is that more men like Bill and Paul are taking a more proactive approach to

taking care of their own health. In order to further encourage this trend Graminex Australia has been working together with non-profit prostate support groups in Victoria to help bring awareness to men. Indra feels it’s only a matter of time before practically all men learn the ins and outs of taking care of their prostate. “Eventually we hope to get more men to come forward and share about their prostate issues. This is our way of showing our support for this common condition”, says Indra. Trevor Cottle, who is in

charge of running the regular meetings with his prostate support group in Box Hill, Victoria, underwent prostate surgery 8 years ago and lost his brother to prostate cancer, feels the same. He added, “ the prostate support groups have been formed by men, for men, who are interested in prostate health issues and want to do something about.” For enquiries about joining a prostate support group, visit www.magnusprime.com for more information. For enquires about Magnus Shield, call 1300 760 627.

Magpie season brings out the zip tie fashion statement ZIP tied helmets are all the rage again as the magpie breeding season returns. From now through to early December, male magpies become overprotective parents and may swoop passing pedestrians, cyclists and the occasional unlucky postie. A magpie swoop zone extends only about 100m from their nest tree, although this area can extend for cyclists. Sunshine Coast Council Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said unlike our teenage children, magpies left the nest about six weeks after hatching and it was during this period their parents were most protective. “I ask residents to be patient and compassionate with breeding birds during this time,” Cr McKay said. “There are some simple steps to avoid being swooped by a magpie including avoiding known magpie areas, wearing hats and helmets, using an umbrella, dismounting bikes and maintaining eye contact with the bird. “If you are being swooped by a particularly aggressive magpie at home or on private property, private contractors can be contacted for assistance.” Council officers are not authorised to capture or relocate overly-aggressive magpies. Complaints regarding swooping birds on council land will be assessed and a decision made regarding monitoring the site, erecting signs to warn pedestrians or engaging a licensed private wildlife contractor. Inquiries regarding magpies or reports of swooping magpies on private land should be referred to the Department of Environment and Resource Management. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

The importance of cleaning solar panels

Yandina Community Gardens Open Day

MOST solar owners are under the impression and have been told from the sales representative that once their system is installed that they can sit back and relax and let the sun do the work. Solar systems and solar hot water systems require cleaning and maintenance on a regular basis to ensure that the panels, inverter, cables, isolator, racking system and junction box have no issues or defects and that the system is running at a peak performance level. If you have had your solar system installed for three or four years and never had it cleaned or checked – now is the time! Go Green Solar Clean is a locally based, professional solar panel cleaning and maintenance company; who have been servicing clients on the Sunshine Coast for the last three years and use environmentally friendly cleaning practices. “As part of our service we provide a clean, check and inspect of your solar system which includes a written report, and I am happy to take the time to

answer any questions,” said Glenn of Go Green Solar Clean. Glenn and Lisa have been extremely pleased with the positive feedback they have been receiving and are looking forward to a busy year as more people become aware of the importance of cleaning and maintaining their solar system and solar hot water panels. “I was really surprised how dirty my panels were and the effect that it had on my solar output. Thanks, and book me in again next year” Mark D (Buderim) Go Green Solar Clean offers professional solar panel cleaning and maintenance from as little as $69.00. They offer pensioner discounts and have negotiated fixed rates with several gated communities to help keep costs down. Don’t take the risk of falling from your roof or ladder, damaging your panels or voiding warranties by letting your maintenance lapse. Search for yield for retirees AS things begin to “normalise” after the gyrations of the GFC it is timely to reflect on the structure of our income stream investment portfolios. A portfolio that was set in a balanced manner prior to 2008 would more than likely have had most of its defensive assets used up via income payments during this period. In addition it could still be sitting with a very high exposure to growth assets. If that is the case, it is not such a bad thing as our Australian shares have recovered significantly since March 2009, and most good international share funds had returns of around 40% through the 2013 calendar year. If this scenario strikes a chord with how your pension fund is bubbling along it may well be good timing to review the balance of your investments and look at the volatility exposure within them. In doing it is important to look for assets that will

give you a reasonable yield, with a high probability of little downside volatility. A well constructed portfolio that will provide opportunity for long term growth and limited chance of volatility would be the ideal. There should be a mid-tier layer of defensive assets and this might be invested in medium term securities. The remainder of the fund should be invested in cash and term deposits so that it is easily accessible to provide your income supply, as well as extra cash for unplanned surprises. The income yield from your share funds should be typically around 3%5% p.a. and the asset will largely remain untouched as it is really there as a hedge against inflation. The smallest part of the portfolio is in term deposits and cash, which are going to have limited returns. The idea is to squeeze as much yield as possible from the mid-tier assets. A

traditional asset to fill this space has been Bond Funds or buying direct long term government bonds. Bonds are a misunderstood asset by many and can in fact be very volatile. A less aggressive solution for this asset is to use what can be described as enhanced yield managed funds. Unlike a bond fund invested almost solely in medium and long term bonds these invest in cash, short term corporate bonds and hybrid securities. There are a number of these that have been around for 10 years or more and have total returns between 1.5% and 2% higher than term deposit rate. Typically the income is higher than Term Deposit rates and there is some capital growth. Research done in the US over the last couple of years shows that an income stream with assets structured effectively should be capable of supplying an income stream

of up to 6% per annum for the life time of the recipient, considering it is managed ongoing. The Carbon Tax is dead

THE carbon tax is dead; but don’t expect to see a major difference in power bills - or for too long. It doesn’t matter that many households were compensated for any impact of the scheme under the Household Assistance Package, or that the carbon tax prevented 11 to 17 million tonnes of carbon emissions. Nor does it matter higher it resulted in some filthy brown-coal fired power stations being mothballed. Like it or loathe it, it’s kaput. The passing of the repeal turned Australia from a leader to laggard. “The repeal of Australia’s carbon price is a tragedy, not a triumph,” said Michael Raupach, Direc-

tor, Climate Change Institute, Australian National University. “It flies in the face of three giant realities: human-induced climate change, the proper role of government as a defender of the common good, and the emerging quiet energy-carbon revolution”. According to the ABC, consumers can expect to save between 20 and 50 cents each day on their electricity bills now the carbon tax has been repealed. However, any financial benefit relating to power bills could quickly be eaten up by increases in other charges. For example, in New South Wales, Ausgrid wants increases of around 2 per cent a year

www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

over the next five years and TransGrid wants to raise prices by almost 4 per cent - this is just in relation to network charges. Other states including South Australia have just implemented more electricity price rises. The average South Australian household will pay around $85 a year more. In Queensland, households were recently hit with a 13.6 per cent increase, expected to cost the average household an extra $190 a year. Any relief may have already been gobbled up before many will receive their post-carbon tax bill. Anyone planning to do something other than pay power bills with the per-

ceived windfall may need to re-evaluate those plans. Media release: energymatters.com.au

Right advice is key to helping better manage incontinence DESPITE its prevalence incontinence remains a difficult topic for people to talk about even to their pharmacist or a GP. The right advice and right products are the keys to managing the condition so a person can get on with everyday life and continue enjoying usual activities. Dr Penny Adams is a practicing GP on Sydney’s North Shore, and sees many patients ‘self diagnosing’ and subsequently trying to manage their incontinence. Dr Adams believes that local pharmacies play an integral part in helping patients select continence products that fit properly and provide both appropriate absorbency levels and skin protection. “Patients need to discuss their problem openly and seek a medical diagnosis of the underlying condition causing the incontinence with their GP,” she said. “Following this, they should go straight into their local pharmacy for advice on appropriate product selection to give them peace-of-mind during any prescribed treatment or beyond as they seek to resume and enjoy everyday activities like golf or bowls,” Dr Adams added. Different customers have different needs and the reality is there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to product selection for incontinence. The range by HARTMANN offers a complete selection of products each designed to help reduce skin irritation, such as MoliCare Mobile. The second most important aspect of advice is on the topic of maintaining skin health and skin integrity. Independent scientific evidence shows that incontinence

and long-term continence pad use is associated with skin complications in nearly 43%1 of people living with incontinence. These problems include skin irritation, reddening, itching and Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD). It’s well established that compromised skin health places people at risk of infection, reduced mobility, longer healing times and poorer health outcomes. Dr Adams believes the key is looking for a pharmacy that offers a wide selection of products with different styles, sizes, and absorbency levels coupled with skin protection to help reduce skin irritation associated with incontinence and long term pad use. Finally, when seeking another level of assurance and advice, people with incontinence can always contact The Continence Foundation of Australia. The Foundation has set up a dedicated helpline that is staffed by continence nurse advisors who provide free advice, referrals and resources to consumers and healthcare professionals. Contact National Continence Helpline (1800 33 00 66). Continence Aids Payment Scheme. The CAPS is an Australian Government Scheme that provides a payment to assist eligible people who have permanent and severe incontinence to meet some of the costs of their incontinence products. The payment is made by Medicare directly into a clients nominated bank account. Preventing Financial Abuse of People with Dementia ON June 18 Alzheimer’s Australia NSW (AlzNSW) launched a discussion paper at NSW Parliament House. The paper, Preventing Financial Abuse of People with Dementia, examines how financial abuse of people with dementia occurs and what can be done to prevent or reduce the incidence of abuse. It is difficult to calculate the prevalence of financial abuse of people with dementia as it occurs in a multitude of ways and much of it remains unreported to authorities. People with dementia may have diminished capacity to recall the financial abuse or lack insight to understand the abuse. The percentage of cases that go unreported is also likely to be high due to feelings of stigma, shame and embarrassment experienced by people who are victims of financial abuse and their families. AlzNSW found that people with dementia, family members and service providers are reluctant to report financial abuse. Victims are often in a relationship of dependence with the perpetrator and may fear repercussions if they report the abuse. There is also confusion about who to report abuse to. When financial abuse is reported there are challenges in investigating cases as it can be difficult to substantiate and prove, especially when the victim has dementia.

Much financial abuse is perpetrated within families and by people known to the victim. The research also suggests that a considerable proportion of financial abuse is perpetrated by people appointed a power of attorney who fail to act in the best interests of the person with dementia. However, not all financial abuse of people with dementia is perpetrated by family members and those holding powers of attorney. People with dementia, particularly those who live alone, are susceptible to exploitation and abuse by neighbours and friends who prey on their vulnerability. A number of strategies to reduce and resolve incidences of financial abuse of people with dementia are examined in the paper. The research findings and recommendations have implications for many stakeholders including governments, lawyers, police, banks and community services. The discussion paper is available is available on the AlzNSW website at www.fightdementia.org.au/newsouth-wales/research-nsw.aspx. For hard copies of the paper or more information about the project, contact Kylie Miskovski at AlzNSW – kylie.miskovski@alzheimers.org.au or (02) 8875 4641. Source: Elder Abuse Prevention Unit

parking at the shopping centre site.” said Dr Pfeiffer. Breast Cancer impacts more than two and a half thousand women Queensland women and their families every year. As there is currently no means of preventing breast cancer, the focus in reducing deaths from this disease has been on finding breast cancer as early as possible. BreastScreen Queensland Health Promotion Officer Kelly Hart said regular two yearly breast cancer screening is still the best way to find breast cancer early – well before a women or her doctor can feel anything. All women aged 40 years and over are eligible for a free breastscreen every two years at a BreastScreen Queensland Service. Women aged 50-74 years

To make an appointment for the mobile service at the Nambour Mill or any of these other mobile sites phone 13 20 50. A doctor’s referral is not required and Saturday appointments are available.

BreastScreen Queensland also provides permanent free breastscreening services at Caloundra, Gympie, Nambour, Noosaville and Maroochydore throughout the year. Juicing and –YOU “OFTEN in this technological age where computers diagnose diseases and perform surgery, we tend to minimise natural therapies. It seems incredulous that the simple act of drinking raw juices could turn around severe diseases, however I have seen it work in otherwise hopeless cases.” Dr. Sandra Cabot – Author of “Raw Juices Can Save Your Life!” Raw juicing is of paramount importance to cancer patients, as it can provide concentrated amounts of antioxidants and phyto-nuitrients to strengthen the immune system. Without raw juicing it is usually impossible to provide enough nutrients to support the immune system. Give your immune system a boost...Zap those autumn and winter flue bugs, improve your energy and vitality. Crush 4 cloves of garlic. Juice of 4 lemons – slice up some of the skin and add to the juice. 1 teaspoon of grated ginger Pinch of chilli powder and honey to taste Add 1 litre of boiling water and stand on bench top until cool Cover and place in the fridge until required For use, strain a cupful, then heat up before drinking, you probably would want to sweeten it with extra honey. Drink often...especially last thing at night. No one knows your body better than Mother Nature. Courtesy of Cansurvive Vol 54.

Arthritis Aid a Big Hit WHEN a New Zealand woman devised a means of relieving her husband’s severe arthritic pain, stiff joints and swollen ankles, she did not anticipate the demand that would ensue for her Aircycle. The inflatable exerciser, allowed her husband to exercise his finger, ankle, knee and hip joints while sitting down. So effective was it, that an arthritis educator requested they be made for others. Jenny Watson agreed to manufacture the Aircycle but the small retirement job quickly assumed larger proportions. A hospital registered it with Medsafe to use in podiatry and diabetes clinic. Physiotherapists and rest homes applauded the results. The gentle exercise resulted in improved circulation in hands and feet – beneficial for foot problems and painful fingers. People reported swelling in ankles and night cramps had gone. Leg muscles had strengthened, they had better balance and could walk further. Joint and sciatic pain had eased. “I loved hearing stories from grateful people.” Watson says. “A man who couldn’t walk far without his feet going numb, said before long he could walk round the block. Within a fortnight, he got to the dairy and back. To his delight, within a month he could walk to the pub!” One foot shape is inflated. While sitting, the feet push air from side to side, working muscles and joints from lower back and hips down to the feet, gently encouraging blood flow and natural movement. People use the Aircycle watching TV, in the office and sitting in a car or plane. It’s so easy! The Aircycle has a lifetime guarantee and at $29.90 is an affordable circulation booster. Jenny donates $1 to Arthritis Australia for each order. Information and orders: www.aircycle.co.nz or call 0412 329 450. See our advert on page 36 herein.

Meetings are free and open to the public. Our society lobbies politicians “to have the law in Queensland changed so that, subject to appropriate safeguards, residents suffering intolerably can receive assistance to die peacefully and painlessly. This help must be in accordance with that person’s ex-

pressed direction”. We believe that all adult Australians should have control over their end of life decisions. If you are one of the 82% of adult Australians who want choice and control of their end of life decisions, if this control is important to you, help us achieve our aim and join us in our endeavour to make this happen. We need people power to make our politicians vote with the conscience of their electorate! Enquiries phone Joan on 5443 5576 or email vesscoast@iinet.net.au.

HOLIDAY & Leisure Cherry Blossom Festival .. the most exciting time to visit Japan and all its great wonders ONE of the most exciting and colourful ‘must-visit’ spectacles is the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan, a traditional celebration that goes back thousands of years. References to sakura hanami (flower viewing) parties appear in literature

as early as 894, during the Heian era, which has influenced Japanese culture – including art, food, fashion and theatre – to this day. The anticipation of the blossoms’ arrival is celebrated in early March at the country’s major muse-

Page 38 - Sunshine Coast Seniors - August 2014

ums, where precious 17thcentury screens are taken from storage and displayed, generating excitement that the blossoms are on their way; that the harsh winter is almost over; and that spring is just around the corner. Mandarin World Tours is

offering two special itineraries that capture all the excitement and wonder of the festival. “I recommend two packages – the 11-day Cherry Blossom Tour, departing March 25 next year, fully inclusive from $4680, and the ‘most-wanted’ 14-day

garden tour from $5780 that brings you to Tokyo, Hakone, Mount. Fuji, Toyohashi, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima and Osaka, letting you discover Japan from all aspects,” says Navy Wang, managing director of Mandarin World Tours, based at Springwood. The 11-day Sakura trip explores Japan at its best season with spectacular views of the cities covered by the symbol flower of Japan – Mount Fuji and the ancient city of Kyoto, where you can immerse yourself in a traditional Kimono show, a tour to the strongest castle in Japan as well as ancient temples and shrines, and the chance to explore famous Japanese style architectures. The trip ends with a tour of the beautiful southern capital city of Osaka. In Tokyo, the Blossom starts around the end of March or the beginning of April. The starting point can change by as much as two weeks from year to year. If the weather during the months before is relatively mild, cherry blossom trees will open early, around the end of March. If it was a cold winter, the blossom will bloom later, in April. Not all cherry blossom trees bloom on the same

day; a cherry blossom tree in a shadowy place will bloom several days later than a tree in a sunny place. The very end of the blossom is fantastic too, with cherry blossom flower petals covering the ground and looking like pink snowflakes. “I am always passionate about travelling to Asia which holds a special place in my heart,” says Navy Wang. “I have travelled extensively over the past year to our major destinations

including China, Japan, Korea and southeast Asia inspecting hotels, meeting local travel experts and attending travel marts and negotiating better deals. “I am so excited to keep exploring new destinations for our future products and find something new to add to our existing tours. Contact Mandarin World Tours at Suite 4, 3368 Pacific Highway, Springwood, or phone Navy on (07) 3808 9918. Email:sales@mwtravel.com.au

Scandinavia - the Crown of Europe WITH spectacular winter days in a landscape blanketed with mounds of snow, to a summer with a world basking in all day light and coloured by a myriad shades of green, to autumn when the countryside is a brilliant tapestry of browns, yellows and oranges, Scandinavia will surprise and delight even the most seasoned travellers. Recent years have seen an increase in the popularity of Australians visiting Scandinavia and with good cause. Although Finnair offer the most direct to Finland with onward flights to other regions, most of the major carriers can transport you to this northern region with good connections. If a visit to Scandinavia is on your radar, you should certainly think of including Russia and the Baltic States as they fit in well whilst not overly depleting the budget. With the new 72-hour visa free allowance for tourists visiting Russia, the 3.5 hour train ride from Helsinki to St Petersburg makes a great side trip without additional visa costs. And just over two hours by ferry from Helsinki, brings you to one of the gems in the Baltic States, the mediaeval city of Tallinn in Estonia. www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

Reaching Sweden from Finland is just as simple with the option of cruising across on the overnight ferry or if time is important, flying the short distance to Stockholm. Once in Stockholm, consider using the train to Oslo and on across the mountains to the picturesque city of Bergen on the Norwegian coast. Bergen is just one of the ports from which you join the Hurtigruten cruise up the dramatic Norwegian coast to Kirkenes in far north Lapland. And not to be overlooked would be Denmark, home to the original Legoland and our own Princess Mary! For a winter holiday, a week in Lapland is without question, the ultimate of ‘Experiencing the Magic’. With reindeer sleigh rides, husky safaris, snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross country and downhill skiing, it offers something for everyone. After living in Finland for a number of years, Claudia Pallaspuro, the owner of The Travel & Cruise Company in Maroochydore, is well qualified to assist in arranging holidays to Scandinavia. She can be contacted on 5408 4700 or mailed at claudia@travelcruiseco.com.au

wild places will be preserved for ever. Make a start by visiting Kenya and Tanzania in August and September and give yourself the life changing experience of witnessing the great migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra as they cross the crocodile filled rivers that separate the Serengeti from the Masai Mara. You’ve all seen it on television. Now see it for real. There’s nothing like it.

The world of Norfolk IF you haven’t yet visited Norfolk Island, now is the time. Or if you have, you may like to return to do all the activities you did not have time to enjoy. There is so much more to Norfolk than you can imagine! Less than 3 hours flying from Brisbane or Sydney, the island boasts a pristine environment with beautiful beaches, a rugged coastline, World Heritage convict site and National Parks and Reserves dotted with the iconic Norfolk Island pines. It is a place where history, culture, friendship and community abound. Offering a myriad of sights and activities, culinary delights with food bursting with flavour, friendly local people and a sub-tropical climate, Norfolk Island is the perfect holiday choice for visitors of all ages. A third of Norfolk Island is within national parks and reserves making bushwalking, mountain biking and bird watching around the spectacular coastline popular activities. Other activities include history, heritage and cultural pursuits such as a visit to the museums, convict ruins tours, island cultural tour and shows such as the Mutiny on the Bounty show. For those who prefer outdoor activities, go for a horse ride, snorkel among coral reefs, trekking, fishing, golf, tennis, swimming or try paintball! Norfolk Island’s heritage is so extraordinary it reads like fiction. An enthralling legacy of Polynesian explorers, convicts, mutineers, South Pacific islanders and whalers can be experienced through the architecture, exhibitions, interpretive tours, shows and museums that bring the island history to life. The site of Kingston is World Heritage Listed, and include the ruins of the penal colony, Government House, the Golf Club, the Research Centre at No.9 Quality Row and of course the cemetery. This is one of the most fascinating areas of the Island to

explore. Captain Cook described Norfolk Island as ‘paradise’ and we couldn’t agree more. ‘Let Us Entertain You’ . . . Come on an adventure to Ancient Rome!

Silvie Paladino appearing in Brisbane SILVIE Paladino will sing in the Queensland Pops Orchestra’s next concert: Broadway Spectacular on 16th August with fellow Melbournian Kane Alexander. Silvie Paladino has one of the greatest female voices in Australia. Her remarkable vocal range enables her to sing a vast repertoire including jazz, contemporary, musical theatre and light opera. Silvie is well known to audiences through her stage

and screen appearances. Her first theatrical role was Eponine in the Australasian tour of Les Miserables. She was then invited to perform the same role on the West End in the London production. In 1997, Silvie returned to London and performed the role of Fantine in Les Miserables for a successful two-year season. She has also performed lead roles in shows such as Cats, Miss Saigon, Mamma Mia and Chess, as well as a regular favourite at Carols by Candlelight.

Cast from Ancient Rome

A talented group of Sunshine Coast senior performers will present the musical theatre comedy Ancient Roamin’s at The Events Centre Caloundra in September and they need an enthusiastic audience to join them on a hilarious adventure to Ancient Rome. Ancient Roamins’ is a delightful play written by playwright Kev Hallewell with a humorous story line, gags, dance, music and well known songs from musicals that will stimulate wonderful memories and leave the whole audience singing along. An elderly couple accidently rub a magic teapot that they bought at a local church bazaar and

they are then transported to Ancient Rome. The plot twists as they become involved in a complicated and comedic love triangle with Hero, Cleo and Smartyass. The concert Director Norma Fox said, “I am absolutely thrilled from the response from our first performance “A Magatha Mystrie’ and am delightful to work with the cast again on this new project. We can’t wait to bring the show to life with another live performance’. Over 20 seasoned local performers are rehearsing twice a week to showcase their unique stage skills. They have been preparing costumes, stage sets and diligently learning their lines in anticipation that the success of the

program will provide ongoing opportunities for senior performers to come out of the woodwork and tread the boards once again. The Events Centre General Manager Gary Mears said “this is the second performance from the group of talented singers, actors and musicians who had regularly taken to the stage throughout their lives and the Events Centre is pleased to provide them with a chance to be a star again as they bring the joy of entertainment to others.” The Events Centre, Caloundra on Wednesday 3 rd September at 1.00pm. Seated at piano/organ: Larraine O’Brien. Standing: Peter Howard & Rosemary McCormick

A SPECIAL concert will be taking place in Coolum soon…….. the choir of St Peter’s Catholic Church will present an afternoon of extra-ordinary musical entertainment. Well known and adored by the Church congregation, the choir has a diverse energy normally experienced only during worship and Mass. This talented choir’s audience often applauds its Sunday performances! In recent years the choir has grown from a small quartet to more than double its size as more churchgoers realize the joys of singing. It’s hard not to sing and clap along with Larraine O’Brien at the piano/organ,

as she belts out hymns of celebration, or the quieter music of devotions. Larraine (pictured) has been playing the piano longer than she cares to remember and is influenced mainly by classical music. Her favourite music is the symphonies of Tchaikovsky. Sometimes she is ‘borrowed’ by other Coolum Churches to play for their services too. In the true spirit of giving and sharing, the St Peter’s choir will sing and play their music for one and all to enjoy, whilst raising funds to help the homeless. The concert will feature celebratory choral music, ‘two-piano’ works, songs and music from around the world. Drinks will be served on arrival, and cocktail finger food arranged by Celebrity Chef Peter Howard, will be served at interval. Peter is also a member of the St Peter’s choir, and now lives in retirement in Coolum. One of the first TV chefs, he appeared over many years on Channel 9’s Midday & Today Shows and is the author of 19 food related books. Peter Howard Says: “I was taught classical French cooking which is still my favourite but I am able to turn my hand to most cuisines – the beauty of living in this multicultural land of ours. The cooking at my home is shared...as it should be! ‘The Sounds Of Celebration’ concert is not only a joy to be a part of but it is also a Celebration of community and to relish what we have as our community. “ St Peter’s Church, Elizabeth Street, Coolum Beach on Sunday 17th August from 2-4pm. $10 per person and tickets are available at the door. All proceeds from the concert and raffles (drawn on the day) will go to St Vincent de Paul – Coolum, to assist Vinnies’ Sunshine Coast Homeless Program.

OVER the past 12 months more than 70 seniors groups have been ïnside” Boggo Road Gaol taking advantage of the special rate that we have on offer which includes a 1 hour guided tour plus complimentary quality tea and coffee. The stories we share with visitors on tours of Boggo Road Gaol come from a variety of research sources including archives, libraries and newspapers but most importantly from the recollections of former prisoners and prison officers. 3 x One Act Plays served with coffee and cake

BATS Theatre Co Inc. is proud to showcase the talent of three local playwrights in this years’ Season Of One Act Plays. Moving Out is a drama written and directed by Maleny resident Judy Fredriksen. It’s 2013. Adam asks Cassie to move in with him, but Tracy does not approve. Tracy has struggled as a single mum all her life after Cassie’s father was killed in an explosion on an oil rig off WA. When Adam’s parents holiday on the Gold Coast, they meet Tracy and Cassie, but the true identity of Cassie’s father is revealed, leaving them all shocked. Call Centre Call is written and directed by Bruce Olive, of

Buderim, and directed by Alison Lambole. This very funny comedy takes a very real and humorous look at the way we live in the 21st Century. Henry meets Karen, an automated voice response system and since everything in our world seems to be computer generated, they spark up a relationship. The final twist in the tale questions whether we are becoming a dehumanized society. Buderim resident Sue Sewell is writer and director of The Way Out, a black comedy. Glenys Cartwright confesses a crime to her sister Sandra, expecting her sympathy and understanding. However, she is shocked at Sandra’s reaction and looks

for a way out of her predicament, even though it could mean sacrificing her beloved grandson. All performances are table seating and our bar will be open serving wine and beer. You are welcome to bring along a plate of nibbles to enjoy. Shows are on August 7, 8 & 9 at 8pm and Matinees on August 9 & 10 at 2pm at the Buderim War Memorial Hall, Cnr Main & Church Sts Buderim. Funding available for diverse range of art projects THE Sunshine Coast is home to all kinds of actors, producers, musicians and talented artists – and Sunshine Coast Council is calling on them to apply for a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant to help with their artistic ventures. The latest major round of RADF – open from July 16 to September 1 – offers up to $10,000 in funding for concept, skills and career development. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the partnership between the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Council encouraged a broad range of artists and community groups to develop their art careers and projects. “With the assistance of RADF funding, I’m proud Council can help boost the careers of our local artists and organisations through skills development or support of their latest creative projects,” Cr McKay said.

EKKA - Tree Bombing THE QCWA knitting and crocheting brigade have been invited to the EKKA to be part of their tree bombing. Bombing is where knitting or crochet is done to cover a thing, eg tree, statue, lamp post, chairs, bicycles. The ladies had experienced a knitting-covered shopping trolley with all the articles in the trolley also knitted. The knitting or crochet can take any shape or form, eg squares, lengths, circles, any size and length. Then all are joined together to be placed/covered over whatever is being bombed. This artform usually is appreciated by onlookers and brings a smile to ones face. Viewed as artistic and an expression of the maker. This has been something different for the QCWA ladies, compared to the regular jumpers, scarves

Would you know what to do in a medical emergency? IF someone was injured, had a heart attack or suffered an allergic reaction in your presence, would you know what to do? How would you react? Do you know the first steps of first aid? People are often hesitant to get involved in an emergency situation not so much because they don’t want to help but they’re worried they won’t know what to do. Emergencies can happen anywhere — at home, on the street, in the pool or at the supermarket. So what should you do? To gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to successfully react and possibly save a life you need to complete a first aid course. An Allability Training course in first aid, providing nationally recognised training, will have you feeling confident to assist should there ever be an emergency. Allability is owned by Sunshine Butterflies Inc that provides services and support to people with a disability and to their families. Sunshine Butterflies does not receive any government funding and relies on their training business to be sustainable. Leanne Walsh, of Noosa, started Sunshine Butterflies. She and her husband know firsthand how difficult it is to raise a special needs child without any support, so Sunshine Butterflies was born. Rather than wait for a millionaire benefactor to donate to the charity, she started AllAbility Training to provide much needed funds for the charity.

To book your First Aid course call 5470 2830.

YOU may be familiar with the 1969 American musical film “Sweet Charity” starring Shirley MacLaine and Sammy Davis Jnr. which featured numbers like ‘Big Spender’ and ‘Rhythm of Life’. The story is about Charity Hope Valentine, a night club dancer who believes in the goodness of people despite apparently endless disappointments at its hands. She hopes that she will finally meet a nice young man to romance her away from her sleazy

life. But don’t even compare the movie to what director Linda Gefken has in mind! She has well and truly made her home here on the coast and following her success in the Direction and Musical Direction of “Urinetown” in 2012, she is now keen to bring “Sweet Charity” to life. If you don’t remember the movie, you might remember the flairs, paisley prints, minis, skivvies and safari suits of the late 60s-70s. With a cast of 23, there are numerous
