WITH many of us sweltering in Queensland’s summer heat and humidity, it’s difficult to imagine the cold, ice and snow with which residents of Canada have had to contend over the last few months during one of the worst winters in living memory.

Looking for food, this skittish deer looks startled as it has its photo taken through a screened window at the home of Linda and Arthur Beatty in Uxbridge, Ontario. The outdoor temperature was -20C, ‘with more days in that range this past winter than I can ever remember,’ says Linda. The Beattys, both retirees and with friends throughout Australia, dream of spending a Canadian winter in the warmth of the Australian sunshine and hope that sharing this photo with Seniors Newspaper readers will bring them one step closer. Shakespeare in Song concert AS most Shakespeare enthusiasts will know, 2014 sees the 450th anniversary of the Bard of Avon’s birth. So it’s a pity he’s not around to receive an unusual birthday present: a unique production by a Sunshine Coast Choir, of a musical version of one of his plays. The long-established Mapleton Choir is the organisation behind this anniversary event, entitled “Shakespeare in Song – a choral paraphrase of the play, Cymbeline” The choir’s talented accompanist John Taylor has created both the libretto and the music to give this dedicated band of singers the opportunity to present a world premiere of his full length choral work, based on Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy, Cymbeline.

In a series of songs, some dramatic, others sweet and lyrical, John Taylor captures the essence of Shakespeare’s story, complete with all the “usual suspects”: clever plot twists, mistaken identities, wrathful despots, evil villains and a lovelorn girl who dresses as a boy to test her beloved’s devotion.

Cymbeline is far from being among the best

known of Shakespeare’s plays, so John Taylor has provided a narration in today’s language, to guide the audience through the plot-twisting maze. While this program is a departure from the choir’s usual repertoire, Shakespeare in Song is no less a showcase for the skills of the composer, the choir’s conductor and, of course,

THE Currimundi Combined Probus Club celebrated its 15th Birthday in April with over 100 members in attendance. Valmai Allen who turns 90 on 23rd April had the honour of cutting the cake. President Ed. Kitchener handed out certificates to 13 foundation members in honour of their achievement and service to the club. Governments get a big “F” for employing older workers GOVERNMENTS, both federal and state, lag well behind the private sector when it comes to employing older workers, a new report reveals.

Using ABS and Census data, the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre report Past, present and future of mature age labour force participation in Australia - highlights variations in rates of ageing and mature age participation across the country.

An interesting finding is a marked decline in the proportion of people aged 60 and over employed by governments. For example, around 16.4% of men aged 50 to 59

work across national, state and local bureaucracies, but this falls to 12.7% for men in their 60s. Women drop from 24.2% in their 50s to 20.1%.

Conversely, private sector employment actually increases as people age.

National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the findings were surprising considering Treasurer Joe Hockey’s recent emphasis on the costs of population ageing.

“Government threats to raise the pension age, when they don’t employ older workers themselves, are a bit rich,” O’Neill said.

“The public service

should represent the gold standard in hiring and retaining mature age staff.

Instead, public servants aged over 60 are a rare breed across the country.

“When it comes to employing senior Australians, governments, both federal and state, get a big ‘F’.”

The report concludes that an ageing workforce underscores the importance of addressing the barriers to mature age employment from age limits on workers compensation to discriminatory recruitment practices.

In 2012, 14% of the population was aged 65 and over. This is projected to increase to 20% in 2042.

The proportional decline in the “working age” population (15 to 64) may result in wage inflation and lower productivity.

Earlier research conducted for the Human Rights Commission indicates that just a 5% increase in paid employment of Australians aged 55-plus would add $48 billion to the economy annually.

community news Seniors demand tougher financial advice standards

OLDER Australians stung by a string of corporate collapses have called for top quality, independent financial advice in a submission to the federal government’s Financial System Inquiry.

In its submission, National Seniors urges the inquiry to consider whether: conflicted remuneration and percentage fees should be allowed in the provision of financial advice; minimum educational standards for financial advisers should be lifted; and tougher financial advice standards adopted.

The call comes barely two weeks after acting Assistant Treasurer Mathias Cormann delayed the dilution of consumer protections introduced by the former Labor government in response to recent corporate failures such as Storm Financial (2009), Trio (2009) and Banksia (2012).

Chief executive Michael O’Neill said that with the growth of superannuation and an increasingly complex financial system,

the risk burden had shifted to individuals.

“The system needs to acknowledge and reflect the shift to individual risk,” he said.

“For older Australians there’s a great deal at stake - nest eggs are on the line and, if you’re in or nearing retirement, there’s little opportunity to recoup losses.

“Yet the system is so complex that consumers, no matter how savvy, are increasingly forced to seek professional financial advice,” said O’Neill.

“Australians should be able to trust that financial advice is independent and in their best interests; that their hard-earned money is safe; and that, on the promise of commission, they’re not being sold a lemon.

“Currently, that isn’t always the case.”

ity; 58% adequate; and almost 40% poor. Yet over 80% of consumers believed they had received good quality advice and 78% had paid commissions or fees based on a percentage of their assets or investments under advice.

O’Neill said there were lessons to be learnt from corporate collapses which left thousands of vulnerable, elderly investors destitute.

“Government has a role to play in ensuring higher standards, greater transparency and more accountability across the

system from banks and financial advisers to regulators.

“The challenge is to create a strong regulatory framework that puts consumers first without stifling growth,” he said.

Announced by Treasurer Joe Hockey late last year, the inquiry is charged with exploring how to position the financial system to best meet Australia’s evolving needs and economic growth.

An interim report is due mid-year; and the final report by November 2014.

Seniors Enquiry Line more than a phone service UNITINGCARE Community’s Seniors Enquiry Line is more than simply an information and referral phone service. Funded by the Queensland Government, the statewide service has access to a wide range of publications and forms which can be posted to interested seniors.

“There are a number of useful publications available which can assist seniors to access concessions, retirement accommodation, financial and legal assistance and information on government services,” Seniors Enquiry Line Coordinator Julie Argeros said.

“Booklets can also be forwarded to seniors which explain how UnitingCare Community’s Elder Abuse Prevention Line and Time for Grandparents programs can provide services to older Queenslanders to increase their wellbeing and sense of security while at the same time strengthening ties within the community,” Ms Argeros said.

community news Older Australians gravely worried about changes to the age pension LEADING seniors advocate COTA Australia is calling for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Tony Abbott to discuss pensioners’ concerns about any change to age pension indexation arrangements, eligibility age, or including the home in the assets test.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, COTA Australia Chief Executive Ian Yates made the point that the age pension was comprehensively reviewed as recently as 2009 and was found to be sustainable over the long term, so proposed further changes will need remarkable justification; noting also that the 2009 changes had bi-partisan support.

62% of age pensioners have little or no assets or income apart from the family home, and significant numbers don’t even have that. About 85% of pensioners who go on to the full age pension at 65 years do so from another Commonwealth payment such as Disability Support, Widows pension or Newstart - so increasing the pension age will have limited impact on the budget bottom line; and also can’t be done without addressing mature age employment issues.

Despite current indexation the age pension remains below the ASFA benchmark for a modest retirement income and cutting indexation will widen that gap.

Almost 1.5 million older Australians

depend either entirely or primarily on the pension for their income in retirement, and for another 943,000 it is an important part of their income alongside super and savings. “Older Australians are growing increasingly fearful that the Prime Minister will renege on his pre-election promises and introduce changes to the pension,�

Mr Yates said. “Seniors fought long and hard to get to a point where the pension allows them to keep their heads just above water. We can’t afford any backward steps now which would have pensioners slipping below the poverty line again.�

Mr Yates said our ageing population offers both challenges and opportunities and must be planned for in an integrated way across retirement income, health, housing, employment, tax, transport and planning policies.

In COTA’s letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Yates calls for a roundtable between the government and all relevant stakeholders to explore evidenced based ways forward. “Such a roundtable discussion would need to be well informed, including with detailed analysis of who would be the winners and losers in any changes,�

In 2008, Darryl left the corporate world to join forces with three experienced publishers to create the publication My Property Preview which was relaunched in 2012 under the title of Desley Grainger and Darryl Olson (Guest Speaker) My Weekly Preview.

Darrly spoke about his business philosophy and the changing face of news distribution in an electronic age. He emphasised that putting the customer first, keeping things simple, working as part of a team and valuing all team members has always proved an

effective business model. He also lives by his personal philosophy that ‘success is to live your life in your way’.

HAVE any old dolls lying around? Like to donate them to a worthy crafty cause? The team from the Australian Body Art Carnivale need more for their “All Dolled Up” workshops and they’d love your help!

The “All Dolled Up” workshops will be held at the Carnivale on 3 & 4 May and provide an opportunity for everyone to take part in body art - albeit small body art! Dolls serve as the “models” to be painted, decorated and enhanced in keeping with the 2014 event theme of ‘Dreams and Nightmares’. Adults as well as kids are most welcome to take part. Workshop organiser Kait Manchip has been busily scouring

opp shops and garage sales to collect a stockpile of dolls to decorate, but is in need of more.

There is no leaping, no ‘flings’, not a sword in sight and you don’t have to wear a kilt. Dances are done in groups of 6, 8 or 10 people, so you don’t need a partner and they cater for all levels of ability. Even if you haven’t danced since tying up the Maypole with ribbons at school you will receive a very warm welcome.

Just wear something casual and comfortable, preferably a skirt for ladies as it is easier to dance in, and flat ballet style shoes.

Now in its 13 year, the group is affiliated with Noosa U3A so you will need to be a member, which also allows you to join any other course or class offered and share in

all the social activities.

Classes are then just $2 each week.

community news RSL Care Chairman’s Appeal: Help people like Katie get more out of life RSL Care will launch its 2014 Chairman’s Appeal in May which aims to raise much needed funds for Australians living in residential care.

RSL Care Chairman Mr Pat McIntosh said the appeal was raising much needed funds to help people to get more out of life.

“This appeal is about promoting wellbeing and independence for our fellow Australians and aims to raise funds to provide support, equipment, tools and services to deserving members of the community in need,” he said. Deserving people like 44 year old Katie Burgess, who, after a diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease came to live at RSL Care Milford Grange, in Ipswich last October. Two months after her diagnosis, the disease rapidly progressed to the point where she had to give up work, sell her house and find rental accommodation. Katie’s challenges progressed to the point where she needed high-care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Katie has very limited ability to communicate, she has lost the use of her arms and

legs and her speech is severely impacted. The future looked grim for Katie. Since coming to live at Milford Grange our qualified and caring staff have used all their skills and experience to encourage Katie to have a go at life again and feel confident about seeking improvement. Mr McIntosh said Katie has had a positive impact on the lives of staff and other residents here too. “We are so lucky to have Katie, we have learned so much from her,” he said.

“It’s so fulfilling for our staff to be able to understand Katie and chart a new course for Katie’s life, to shape a new future with her and give her independence back.” Mr McIntosh said RSL Care would use funds donated to the appeal to install specialised software onto Katie’s laptop. “This will open up a world of connection, communication and self-expression.

Katie said “I will be able to take back some control”.

Donations to the 2014 Chairman’s Appeal will directly support people in our care to make the most out of life. Donated funds will go towards programs and items that support and enhance individuals mental, physical and emotional health, activities that keep them socially connected to their community and most importantly activities that acknowledge their unique life and self-expression giving them a purpose to be healthy and live a productive life.

across boulder-strewn tracks to the base camp, perched 5,300 meters above sea level. It was the culmination of five months of rigorous training in Buderim.

Every morning Joe set his alarm for 4.15am. “I got up early to beat the heat,” he said. “I’d drive to the base of Buderim Hill and walk about 12 kilometres carrying an eight kilogram backpack.” After a bit of practice, he was clocking around two hours and twenty minutes to complete the journey.

On his trip, Joe travelled in a group with a dozen

adventurers and a large support team including local sherpas. He said the camaraderie was wonderful but nothing compared to what Mother Nature provided.

“The whole area touched my heart. It’s fabulous being so elevated and seeing how the colours change on the mountains and the clouds.”

Any exhaustion was banished by exhilaration when Joe reached base camp. “We all jumped up and down and hugged each other,” Joe said.

Snow blizzards and strong wind hampered their efforts to capture

the moment on film and some of the walkers were chastised for removing their gloves to try and get a better grip on their cameras. “Luckily none of us got frost bitten but we sure came close.”

community news Troubleshooting your home network In this day of burgeoning technology the average family includes the home computer, a laptop, iPad or tablet, smartphone and printer, all of which want to talk to each other as well as the Internet. One of the most important devices in the house today is the Modem router and it is through this technology that our devices connect to each other and to the Internet.

Yet is can give us many headaches.

I get a lot of phone calls from people asking, “Why is the internet slow?” and “My tablet won’t connect to the internet”.

Many of these issues can be resolved by performing a few quick troubleshooting tips.

First, get to know your modem router. Find the instruction book if you can and understand what each flashing lights at the front of your modem/router is for.

If any of these lights are flashing in an orange or red colour then you have your first issue to begin troubleshooting – is it the Internet, your LAN or your wireless signals?

If someone calls me with this issue, I first suggest they turn off all their devices. Then turn off the modem/router and wait for a couple of minutes. Check that all the plugs connected to your modem router and your computers and printers are not loose.

Then turn on the modem router first, it takes a little while to boot up because if needs to connect with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) through your phone line.

Once you see all the lights are green, then turn all your computers and devices back on. If your internet light is still flashing orange or red once it has fully rebooted, read your instruction manual, as it may mean your ISP you will need to call them so they can check it at their end. If the light is green then see if you have Internet connection on just the computer that is connected to the modem/router via a cable, if this is clear then test your internet connection from your wireless devices.

70% of the time a reboot in this order solves the problem, but if you find it doesn’t, you then the next step is to check your Modem/router settings.

Open your Internet browser and type in http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar and, using the account name “admin” and password “admin” you can see the modem/router’s configuration settings , security and Wi-Fi settings.

Most router companies use the same default IP address, admin account, and passwords on all their routers, but your router’s documentation will tell you the specific IP address. Once you have logged in you may need to check or reset the settings inside the router with the help of your ISP. If Internet access is slow, check to make sure you are getting near the bandwidth promised by your ISP. Use multiple speed test tools such as speedtest.net. Keep track of bandwidth at different times of the day and night as well as weekdays and weekends. Contact your ISP for further troubleshooting if you are not seeing the bandwidth you are supposed to receive from your ISP. I hope this helps with keeping your network trouble free and your Internet surfing stable.

President Sandra Godfrey said between the entries in the floral arrangements featuring shoes and also on the competition table, guests were given a feast to delight the eye. A central feature reinforced the value of the family, taking its theme from the International Year of the Family.

“We had more than 200 people attend from all around South East Queensland who were enthralled with the creativity shown in the shoe competition, and the resilience of those gardeners who were still able to display blooms for the competition table, despite our recent challenging weather conditions,” she said.

Mrs Godfrey said the club’s Friendship Day was an excellent opportunity for the club to extend the hand of friendship to its present and former members and the invited guests, and reinforced how the club was itself a family.

ON Sunday morning with threatening skies, many local and visiting bowlers ventured out onto our greens and enjoyed great

bowls, good friendship and a fantastic seafood lunch. After two games, competition was keen as several teams were on two

wins. But, because of the continuing showers, the last game was reduced to nine ends, even though the greens were holding

up well, thanks to the skills of our green keeper.

Congratulations to the overall winners with 3 wins, plus 18- Nev Kuskoff, Keith Vandermaal, Ian Cranney and Peter Jackson from Woombye.

Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club AMATEUR radio has undergone a revival in recent years. Often called “ham radio” amateur radio is the recreational or experimental use of radio frequencies set aside for non-commercial purposes. All amateur radio operators must be licensed.

The Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club offers training for people wishing to obtain an amateur radio licence at all levels. There are three levels of licenses, the initial entry is known as the Foundation, the next level the Standard and the top level the Advanced. The License examinations can also be carried out at the club. There are no age or gender limits for anyone wishing to obtain a license.

There are a variety of ways for “ham” radio operators to participate in amateur radio activities, including casual communications with other amateur radio operators locally and throughout the world, contest competitions, assist in sporting activities, and some may wish to design and build their own equipment or antennas. An important part of amateur radio activities is the preparation for community service as providers of emergency communications services.

Summary of changes From 1 July 2014, the distinction between highlevel and low-level care will be removed, giving everyone the choice to pay their accommodation costs as a lump sum, a daily payment amount or a combination of both.

You will also be able to select extra services for an additional daily fee in participating facilities.

Importantly, the current income-tested care fee, which is based on assessable income, will be replaced with a meanstested care fee, which will be based on assessable income and assets. For many, this will mean ongoing care fees will be higher if entering an aged care facility on or after 1 July 2014, and in some cases much higher if assessed assets are significant.

Things to consider before moving into aged care Moving from your home: When moving to aged care, you need to decide whether to sell or keep your home. While there are a number of factors that will influence this decision, it is important to know that keeping or selling your home can affect your ongoing care fees if you enter a facility on or after 1 July this year.

Until 1 July 2014, if you keep your home, it is not assessed as an asset to determine your ongoing care fees.

However, from 1 July, up to $144,500 of the value of your home will be assessed as an asset to determine your ongoing care fees, unless it is occupied by a ‘protected’ person, for example your spouse. If you sell your home, the entire proceeds will be assessed to determine your ongoing care fees. This would need to be considered alongside the practicalities of keeping the home, such as ongoing bills and mainte-

nance. If you decide to keep your home, it is important that your accommodation costs are structured correctly in order to continue to receive favourable Centrelink treatment.

2. Paying for your accommodation From 1 July, you will have 28 days after entering a facility to decide whether to pay for your accommodation as a refundable accommodation deposit or a daily accommodation payment.

Your choice can have an impact on your financial assets, which can therefore influence how much you pay for your ongoing care fees. For example if you choose pay for accommodation by a refundable accommodation deposit that deposit will be assessed as an asset to determine your ongoing care fees.

3. Investing your money Your financial assets are assessed when determining your ongoing care fees, so an appropriate investment strategy may

reduce the amount you pay.

Seek advice If you or your family find yourself in the situation of needing accommodation in an aged care facility it would be worth consulting a financial adviser specialising in aged care to assist you in understanding the impact of these changes and how to best structure your finances.

Kawana Seniors Citizens THE Kawana Seniors really enjoyed their celebrations for Easter with their Easter Parade with many members getting into the swing of the occasion. Prizes were won for the best dressed ladies and gents. In early April their Whale Watching Cruise out of Mooloolaba was excellent and they had a brilliant day out. In May, some of the Seniors are going up to Yeppoon, for a 6 day holiday. Next they are off by Luxury Coach to Gosford for a week and will do a cruise on Port Stephens to see some Dolphins on the first day, then next day visit Sydney and the Northern Beach. At night see ‘The Lion King’ the Musical, at the Capitol Theatre. Next day enjoy a scenic drive through the NSW Central Coast Waterways to The Entrance and on the final day see the Newcastle area and visit the Westpac Helicopter Base. The Senior’s Travel Table is full of interesting places to visit then, for the rest of the year.

footcare People with diabetes are at risk of foot problems PEOPLE with diabetes are more likely to develop serious foot problems because the condition may lead to reduced blood flow to the feet, which makes cuts and abrasions slow to heal.

Diabetes can also causedamaged nerves in the foot, which result in a reduced ability to feel minor trauma.

As well as checking their feet daily for cuts, blisters, bruises or signs of injury, which they may not have felt happening, they should have at least an annual foot check-up with a podiatrist.

Seek advice or treatment from a podiatrist before trying to manage foot problems (such as corns, calluses or ingrown nails) by yourself.

Good foot care can help people with diabetes to avoid foot problems. Take care of your feet, get regular check-ups from your doctor or podiatrist and act quickly if you have a problem.

The nerves to your feet are the most likely to be affected by diabetes. Damaged nerves (neuropathy) can cause painful, numb or insensitive feet. Minor cuts, blisters or burns may not be felt and ulcers can develop, which you may not be aware of. Some people with neuropathy experience uncomfortable sensations such as burning, tingling and pain. This is often worse at night.

It is important to remember that many people with nerve damage have no symptoms and are unaware of the problem. Nevertheless, they are still at risk of developing ulcers.

Foot care amongst diabetics is incredibly important as foot ulcers affect as many as one out of 10 people with dia-

betes. Even small ulcers on the foot can represent a serious risk as they may heal extremely slowly and need rigorous treatment to cure.In turn, ulcers can develop into serious lower body infections. The presence of high blood glucose levels over a long period of time may result in damage to the body and to bodily functions.Although it is uncertain how this process works, amongst diabetics it is relatively frequent. A condition called diabetic neuropathy sometimes occurs over time, usually affecting the sensory nerves in the legs.

If your nervous system is even slightly damaged, the extremities of the body can become numb.

For this reason, you may not be able to feel foot problems until they have developed. It is most important to ensure you have regular foot examinations.

Diabetic neuropathy can gradually occur without the patient realising and, as such, the loss of protective sensation puts them at risk of developing increased pressures underneath the feet that can cause ulceration and in some severe cases where infection and gangrene is present, amputation.

The blood supply to the feet can also be affected along with an increased tendency to develop foot deformities due to an imbalance between the foot and lower leg muscles. These complications represent a significant risk to patients with diabetes mellitus and their health and quality of life in general.

If you are at risk, check in with your doctor or podiatrist soon.

Whether walking, running, exercising, or just standing, having feet that are comfortable and well-cared for (rather than aching or in pain) makes the experience must more pleasant. And this isn’t just about feeling good. When your feet don’t get the attention they need, chronic problems can develop, which may trouble you for years to come. Healthy Sleep Solutions in your own home SLEEP apnoea is usually a chronic (ongoing) condition. When your breathing pauses or becomes shallow, you’ll often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep or even wake yourself up, most often without even realising. As a result, the quality of your sleep is poor, making you feel tired during the day.

Sleep apnoea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. The pauses in breathing can last from a few seconds to minutes and may occur 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing restarts with a loud snort or choking sound.

Sleep apnoea often goes undiagnosed and is frequently only recognised by someone witnessing the event. Snoring is one of the most important signs of sleep apnoea but if you hear someone holding their breath or if the person appears to stop breathing for a while in their sleep it is highly recommended they are tested for sleep apnoea.

Left untreated, sleep apnoea can lead to serious health conditions, particularly for those with drug resistant hypertension (high blood pressure) and Type 2 Diabetes. Sleep apnoea sufferers left untreated are 7 times more likely to suffer a stroke and the odds for developing depression were increased. Studies show that a person with untreated sleep apnoea is 7 times more likely to have a motor vehicle accident and 3 times more likely to suffer a work-related injury or fatality.

There is also evidence for a strong relationship between obesity, sleep apnoea and metabolic syndrome.

THE ‘Sowing Serenity Horticultural Therapy Program’ is being held at the Noosa Day Respite Centre, Wallace Park, Noosaville.

“Horticultural Therapy is a process of using plants and garden related activities to promote well-being of people’s minds, body and spirit” This program benefits people recovering from stroke and heart disease, early stage dementia, physical and intellectual disabilities and those partially sighted.

We can also meet the needs of clients in wheelchairs.

Schedule of Activities; 7th May–Growing Quick Pick Crops – growing quick & easy crops to pick and eat.

14th May – Composting & Worm Farms – Set up compost bin in garden and look at how worm farm works to produce garden fertilisers.

Helping in our local Community Annual Cent Auction EVERY year St Vincent de Paul – Coolum holds its major fund-raising drive – the Annual Cent Auction.

Almost every business in Coolum, and many from surrounding areas contribute prizes, services and vouchers to enable St Vinnies in their endeavours to assist individuals and families in need. The Cent Auction has become a huge and very popular community event. Bowel cancer is a disease of the large bowel (colon) that usually develops from small growths inside the colon known as polyps. It is the second most common cancer in the world and is the second highest cause of deaths from cancer in Australia after lung cancer.

Not all polyps are cancerous but if detected early enough they can be removed to significantly reduce the chances of bowel cancer developing. The prevalence and severity of bowel cancer is due to the fact that usually there are no symptoms during the early stages of the disease. However, often tiny amounts of blood are leaked from polyps or cancers long before other symptoms appear and it is this hidden blood that a Bowelscan test can detect quite early. Detecting bowel cancer early is the key to surviving this deadly disease.

Testing for bowel cancer: Rotary Bowelscan is an initiative of over 300 Rotary Clubs across Australia working to raise awareness of the risks of bowel cancer and reduce the number of lives lost to it each year. The Bowelscan program complements the Federal Government’s program which offers free test kits to people aged 50, 55, 60 and 65. The Rotary program, however, is designed to encourage Australians most at risk (men and women aged over 40) to test themselves annually, because it

considers annual rescreening is the best way to ensure cancerous polyps cannot develop undetected.

The Rotary Program: This program runs for one month every year from 1May to 31 May. With the support of dozens of pharmacies the program distributes inexpensive and easy to use Bowelscan test kits to local communities. It is a test that can be conducted in the privacy of the home.

When a completed kit is returned it is tested in a pathology laboratory and Rotary will send a letter advising you personally of the outcome. If the test should prove to be a positive one both you and your Doctor will be informed.

Mr. Charles Ellison arrived from the Rosemount School to teach the Bli Bli students in January 1921.

From as early as 1901 students had been coming to the wooden shingleroofed school for their lessons. Local residents recalled that the first teacher was Mr. Alex Purdon, who was then replaced by Miss Adela Bleakley.

Mr. Ellison paid 50 pounds annual rent to the Government. He found the new Queenslander style building to his liking, as he had previously been living in rented accommodation nearby, but at a further distance from the school on Willis Road, Bli Bli. The residence had been commissioned by the Department of Public Instruction, as a two bedroom cottage with a modest lounge room and eat in kitchen. The polished hardwood floors and high ceilings created a spacious interior, attracting the cooling Maroochy River breezes, although the “westerly winds” were known to be a “hardship”. The toilet and laun-

dry were located outside.

There were only a few short steps to reach the school building, and the 2 acre site provided enough space to plant Arbor Day, Coronation, forestry and fruit trees, which would prove to be a valuable outdoor educational resource for the students.

The land had been donated in 1899 by one of the younger set of the Cribb family, a Mr. John George Cribb junior. Mr. Cribb, a Brisbane dentist, was the grandson of Mr. Robert Cribb MLA, who had previously owned a larger portion of the land surrounding the school and house. Mr. Robert Cribb, like many other free Scottish settlers such as William Pettigrew, had travelled with his family in 1849 on the “Fortitude”.

He had heard stirring descriptions of the sunny virtues and agricultural and business opportunities of “Cooksland” from Reverend Dr. John Dunmore Lang of Sydney Town.

The 1920 Bli Bli Schoolmaster ’s Resi-

dence is the oldest community building in the local area, along with the Community Hall (1927), the Church Hall (1937) and the new Bli Bli School (1937). The 20th Century architecture of the first three buildings forms a unique local heritage precinct on Willis Road, Bli Bli. The Bli Bli On Maroochy Historical Society are working with Council and local community groups to prepare a heritage assessment report and a business case for preservation of the site and use of the heritage building for historical research and community purposes. A swinging Mother’s Day Special with Craig Martin and his Swing Band ORIGINALLY from Liverpool (UK) Craig Martin’s big break came when offered a role in the West End production “Ferry Across the Mersey” starring alongside Gerry and the Pacemakers. Moving to Australia in 2010 Craig burst upon the Queensland music scene as a contemporary swing. Craig soon appeared at many top venues including The Gold Coast Arts Centre, Brisbane City Hall, Twin Towns, Brisbane Jazz Club and the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club.

Craig is a modern day crooner and cleverly combines traditional and contemporary swing with great flair and imagination. Seniors enjoy a ‘day inside’ during visits to historic Boggo Road Gaol

A group of seniors club members enjoy a historic tour of Boggo Road Gaol

SINCE public tours of Brisbane’s historic Boggo Road Gaol started in 2012, many seniors clubs have welcomed the amazing experiences that a ‘day inside’ offers.

The 90- minute tour through the gaol’s heritage-listed Number Two Division is a short, gentle walk through history and includes time to explore one of the original cellblocks, ask questions and take in the surroundings.

Seniors clubs that have enjoyed the experience include the Bellbowrie Probus Club, Lowood Seniors, Calamvale National Seniors, Regency Park Retirement Village, Carina and District Probus Club and Rochedale Probus Club. Boggo Road Gaol was named after the road which led to it, that became a boggy quagmire

after rain. It was officially known as the Brisbane Prison. For over a century it has dominated the skyline of Brisbane, its stark red brick walls and imposing guard tower on Annerley Road becoming iconic for all the wrong reasons.

The gaol opened in 1883 and was used mainly as a holding prison for those serving short sentences or on remand.

Its initial infamy came as a place of execution. In 1903, a new purpose-built separate women’s gaol was created. After nearly 20 years of use, HM Gaol for Women was closed and the female occupants shifted to another part of the prison site.

In the 1920s, the men of the St Helena Island prison in Moreton Bay were moved into the former women’s gaol. Re-

named Number Two Division, this section became home to those serving the longest sentences – killers, murderers, and violent offenders. Three cellblocks became the homes of ‘lifers’.

Thousands of visitors have been guided through the last remaining section Number 2 Division on historical tours, ex officer/ex inmate tours, ghost tours and during events.

A re-enactment troupe, the Prison Players, have been recreating the lives of prisoners and warders every Sunday.
