GrandFriends Adult Day Program Provides Compassionate Care for Adults Living with Dementia
The Grandfriends Adult Day Program, housed within the Via Health, Fitness and Enrichment Center, is an adult day program for adults living with dementia. Our mission is to provide older adults who need supervision and daily care with opportunities to stay mentally and physically healthy and avoid being placed in a nursing home.
Last year we were approved as a provider through the Department of Veteran Affairs Community Care Network. This means veterans enrolled in the VA healthcare system are now eligible for adult day care services at Via at no cost to them through their VA benefits.
Adult day programs promote improved health by offering older adults a place to go each day to receive care, nutritious meals, mental and physical stimulation, and companionship. Benefits to seniors in adult daycare include:
n Helps preserve independence.
n Provides an opportunity to socialize, resulting in increased alertness and activity.
n Activities provide more structure, giving older adults something to anticipate and look forward to.
n Physical exercise reduces symptoms of anxiety, improves stamina, health and balance and improves sleep.
Caring for loved ones with dementia – while managing work and family obligations – is challenging. GrandFriends provides respite, allowing caregivers to continue life knowing their loved one is in a safe and caring environment. The program provides health and socialization benefits to clients living with dementia, including group fitness activities, games and activities that stimulate mental health, and socialization with peers.
The program runs Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. through 5:30 p.m. to accommodate the work schedule of caregivers. The cost is $55 a day for one day a week or $50 a day for two or more days. This fee covers breakfast, lunch, and snacks, as well as most activity supplies. Transportation to and from the program within a 15-mile radius of The Via Center is also available at $3.00 for a one-way trip.
To schedule a tour and assessment of your loved one, contact our GrandFriends Supervisor, Christy Harvison, at 251-470-5228 or charvison@viamobile.org. ~

Every single day, we get notices designed to part us from our money. These kind of scams are so common but they are getting ever inventive. How can we tell if its legitimate?
FIRST, most legitimate inquiries, including very serious ones, will never be done by text, call or email. If the sheriff has a reason to visit you, he will not announce it ahead of time! If you missed jury duty, you have to see the court personnel, not someone saying you have to pay money online or by phone.
SECOND, if you receive an alert, NEVER follow the instructions, instead, contact the source directly. If the bank alerts you to potential fraud, go to the bank or call the bank’s number that you look up, not one provided to you.
THIRD, if you receive a notice in the mail instructing that you owe money, call the source. You can call the IRS, the revenue department, the police department or any other legitimate source directly from a
FOURTH, you can sign up for alerts on your credit or for a credit freeze. Go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com, which you should visit annually to get a free credit report and review. You can request a freeze on your credit. You can also take extra precautions from your bank to prevent getting defrauded. Its slightly inconvenient, but easier to lift your freeze when you buy something large than to navigate through the quagmire of identify theft.
If you are having financial problems, deal with your problems head on and directly with local professionals and not with online companies or others that may not be legitimate. Do not respond to unsolicited offers of help.
If you suspect you have been scammed, report it to the police immediately and change all your passwords and personal information online immediately. Notify your bank if you believe your personal information has been compromised. ~

Why Hire an Elder Law Attorney?
Elder law attorneys specialize in estate planning, incapacity planning, and end-of-life care for seniors, helping them remain in their homes and protect against abuse. They are essential in planning for the future and addressing the needs of a vulnerable population.
How Can an Elder Law Attorney Help?
Long-Term Care Planning: As the number of Americans over 65 is projected to exceed 80 million by 2040, planning for long-term care is increasingly important. Elder law attorneys assist seniors in creating financial plans to cover essential needs like food, rent, and medical care. They also guide clients in applying for public benefits such as Medicaid and Medicare.
Housing: Many seniors wish to age in place. Attorneys can represent clients in landlord-tenant disputes, helping them navigate issues like city ordinance violations. They also protect seniors against housing discrimination under the Fair Housing Act.
Estate Planning Document Preparation: Elder law attorneys draft critical documents such as wills, health care directives, and powers of attorney, ensuring that seniors’ rights are protected regarding retirement benefits and medical decisions. A solid estate plan reduces family stress and potential inheritance disputes.
Incapacity Planning: Attorneys can help document care wishes for seniors facing disabilities or conditions like dementia. With the rising number of Alzheimer’s cases, having a plan for incapacity is vital for protecting financial and physical well-being.
Guardianship: In cases where an older adult can’t make decisions due to conditions like dementia, attorneys assist family members in securing guardianship, which involves legal proceedings and court hearings. They can also advocate for the senior’s autonomy by exploring alternatives to full guardianship.
Combating Elder Abuse: Elder abuse is a significant public health issue, affecting one in six adults aged 60 and older. Elder law attorneys are well-versed in the rights of seniors and can provide legal recourse against abusers while implementing safeguards like advance directives to protect against financial exploitation.
By addressing these diverse needs, elder law attorneys play a critical role in supporting the aging population and ensuring their rights and well-being are protected. ~

Why Joining a Senior Center Could Be
If you’re an older adult thinking about joining a senior center, you might feel hesitant at first.
But this choice can truly transform your day-to-day life, offering you a chance to connect with others, stay active, and find joy in a supportive community. Let’s explore some of the wonderful benefits that senior centers provide and how they can positively impact your life.
1Make New Friends and Stay Social
As we age, we may find ourselves spending more time alone, especially after retiring, losing a loved one, or facing limited mobility. Senior centers create a warm, friendly environment where you can meet new people, have great conversations, and build meaningful friendships. Being around others helps lift your spirits and reduces feelings of loneliness. Laughing, sharing stories, and simply being part of a group can make a world of difference in how you feel.

3Health and Wellness Support
Staying healthy and active is important at any age, and senior centers make it easier. They offer exercise classes like yoga, tai chi, and water aerobics that are designed for all fitness levels. Many centers also provide health fairs that have health screenings and nutritional advice to help you manage
2Fun Activities for Every Interest

4
Helpful Resources and Services
Senior centers often offer more than just fun and fitness. They can assist with things like transportation, meal programs, and healthcare guidance. These services can make daily life easier, allowing you to focus on the things that bring you joy, while still feeling secure and supported.
5Keep Your Mind Sharp
Mental stimulation is key to aging well, and senior centers offer plenty of ways to keep your brain active. Whether it’s through educational workshops, technology classes, or discussions about history and current events, you’ll have the chance to keep learning. Staying mentally engaged can reduce the risk of cognitive decline and keep you feeling sharp and proud of your accomplishments.
6
Feel a Sense of Belonging
Being part of a community is incredibly rewarding. At a senior center, you’ll find a group of people who understand and support you. Through group activities and events, you’ll build lasting friendships and create a social circle that can be there for you during life’s ups and downs. Feeling like you belong is a great boost for your self-esteem and emotional well-being.
7Volunteer and Give Back
If you enjoy helping others, senior centers offer volunteering opportunities where you can give back to your community. Whether it’s mentoring younger people or participating in local projects, volunteering gives you a
sense of purpose and fulfillment. It’s a wonderful way to stay connected, stay active, and make a positive impact on the world around you.
8Lower Stress and Anxiety
Senior centers provide a peaceful space where you can escape daily worries and focus on what makes you happy. The activities and social connections you’ll find there can be a great way to relieve stress, while the supportive community gives you a place to share any concerns you might have.
9Boost Your Quality of Life
By joining a senior center, you’re likely to see a significant improvement in your overall happiness. The combination of socializing, staying active, and having emotional support leads to a more fulfilled life. Studies show that seniors who are engaged in their communities tend to live longer, happier lives.
10A Safe and Welcoming Place
Senior centers are designed to be safe, welcoming spaces where older adults can thrive. The staff and volunteers are often trained to understand the needs of seniors, providing a nurturing environment where you can relax, have fun, and truly enjoy yourself.
If you’re looking for ways to enhance your social life, stay healthy, and add more joy to your days, reach out to your local senior center. It could open up a whole new world of opportunities, friendships, and fun just waiting for you to explore! ~

The Opioid Crisis and Grandfamilies
The devastating impact of the opioid epidemic on families has increased the number of Grandfamilies (families where grandparents serve as parents), and created additional financial, mental and physical burdens for senior heads of household.
Children of substance abusing parents quite often end up being raised by grandparents, other relatives or in foster care. But, placing children in foster care situations is not typically the best option. Children raised in foster care have 50% chance of not graduating high school. They also are significantly more likely to become homeless, incarcerated, unemployed or addicted to substances themselves.

The sudden responsibility can result in legal issues, food insecurity, crowded living spaces, and the caregiver’s loss of freedom. Often, grandparents are on a fixed income and cannot meet their financial needs. They also have limited access to some medical care for things like dental work not paid for by Medicaid.
The best option is keeping children in kinship families. For every one Alabama child in foster care because of addictive parents, there are 85 being raised by relatives. Grandparents, or other relatives, can provide a safe, nurturing, and structured home for these children.

Why Move to a Senior Living Community
Deciding to move into a senior living community is a significant milestone, often accompanied by a mix of emotions and questions. However, choosing to make this transition before it becomes a necessity can greatly enhance a person’s lifestyle.
At Community Senior Life, with senior living communities throughout Alabama, we want you to discover the many benefits of moving into a senior living community sooner rather than later, so we’re sharing some of these advantages to help guide you in your decision.
The Advantages of Moving Early
The notion of relocating to a senior living community in Alabama is frequently associated with a response to declining health or mobility. Yet, taking proactive steps to move before reaching that point can be incredibly empowering. By making this decision earlier, older adults can enjoy an active, social lifestyle that fosters personal growth and well-being, providing a wealth of opportunities to enrich one’s life and maintain independence.
Selecting the Ideal Community
Moving early allows individuals the luxury of time to explore various communities and choose one that best fits their preferences and needs. This careful selection process ensures a comfortable and enriching setting tailored to individual tastes. Additionally, it gives seniors and their

families a sense of peacefulness that comes with knowing they have made a thoughtful and informed choice without the pressure of an urgent situation.
Time to Acclimate to Community Living
Starting life in a new community sooner enables individuals to acclimate to the environment on their own terms. Instead of the stress of finding the right care and tending to urgent health needs, individuals who make the move early can enjoy personalizing their new space and settling into the community.
Proactive Health Management
Engaging with the community’s health and wellness programs early means individuals can address their health proactively, promoting longterm well-being. Access to regular health screenings, fitness classes, and nutritious meal options can help maintain physical health and prevent future issues. Additionally, participating in various recreational activities supports mental and emotional health, contributing to a holistic approach to aging well.
Peace of Mind for Families
Making an earlier transition to senior living in Alabama can also provide peace of mind for families or close relatives. Family members
can continue their daily routine with the assurance that the older adult in their family is being taken care of and enjoying a purposeful life in a supportive setting. This allows for more quality time spent with family and friends without added stress.
Enhanced Social Connections
Regular social interaction has been shown to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, prevalent concerns among older adults, and to reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Transitioning into a senior living community in Alabama before it’s needed provides individuals ample time to develop strong social bonds with fellow residents and team members.
Financial Planning and Stability
Moving into a senior living community early can also provide financial benefits. Many communities offer different pricing options and payment plans, allowing older adults to manage their finances more effectively. Early transition can sometimes secure better rates or incentives that may not be available later. Additionally, planning finances ahead can provide a sense of tranquility among the family members, ensuring that all caregiving costs are covered and that the older adult can enjoy a graceful retirement.
These relationships foster a sense of belonging and community, which can significantly improve residents’ emotional well-being.
Access to Enriching Programs
Senior living communities typically offer a variety of enriching classes, programs, and events designed to engage and entertain residents. From arts and crafts sessions to book clubs and movie nights, there are numerous opportunities for individuals to pursue hobbies and discover new interests. The transition period can be a time of exploration, allowing individuals to discover the amenities and services available to them.
Transitioning to senior living in Alabama before it becomes a necessity allows older adults to enjoy the extensive benefits these communities offer. Personalized care, signature programs, enhanced safety, peace of mind for families, and ample opportunities for socialization contribute to a comfortable lifestyle.Don’t wait for necessity to dictate this decision—take the proactive step toward a joyful, enriched life today by contacting our team at Community Senior Life and scheduling a visit to any of our senior living communities in Alabama.

Our highly skilled and dedicated team of therapists will also work with you to regain your independence and peace of mind. Your recovery is our top priority, and we’re with you every step of the way.

Whether you need rehabilitation to “bridge the gap” between a hospital stay and returning home or need comprehensive therapy as a long-term resident, our professional rehabilitation department is here to strengthen and increase your mobility. Sometimes, a patient is too ill for home care but no longer needs to remain in the hospital or in a surgical bed. When that is the case, physicians order shortterm rehabilitation or transitional care in a skilled nursing facility.
Your rehabilitation team, guided by your physician, will decide which of the following therapies would be beneficial to you:
