Ridegcrest: What’s the Difference?

While you may have heard the terms used interchangeably, skilled nursing and sub-acute rehabilitation differ.

Sub-acute rehabilitation provides short-term, in-patient care, while skilled nursing offers a higher and more complex level of care than assisted living.

As you search for services for you or a loved one, it is imperative to understand the difference.

Sub-Acute Rehabilitation

Sub-acute rehabilitation involves short-term treatment and recuperation after a surgery, accident or illness.

After their stay, a patient may return home and resume life as normal, receive in-home assistance or seek permanent residence in a nursing home or senior living center. The goal of rehabilitation is to return individuals to their highest level of independence.

Rehabilitation centers are certified and regulated by the state and federal governments. Team members include registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses, vocational nurses, speech pathologists, physical therapists, audiologists, medical directors and others.

Medicare covers the cost of a rehabilitation center stay for up to 100 days during each benefit period, as long as the patient meets the eligibility criteria and has a skilled need for continued coverage. Long-term care insurance may cover the costs of care after Medicare coverage ends.

Skilled nursing services may in clude long-term, round-the-clock care for chronic medical conditions and intravenous therapy, physical therapy, wound care and monitoring of vital signs.
