2

HEALTH AT HOME - NONMEDICAL CARE, HOME HEALTH CARE AND HOSPICE CARE

This section offers three different comparison grids; the first features Skilled Home Healthcare; the second contains Non-Medical and Personal Assistance at home, and the third grid showcases Hospice Services for end of life care. First Familiarize yourself with the different services that are offered by each agency. You will find definitions about each service at the beginning of this section. Many options exist; we hope this will help you find a provider to meet your specific needs.

SENIOR HOUSING

First you should familiarize yourself with the many options available and determine which one is best for your needs. You will find definitions of each type of housing at the beginning of the housing section. Then turn to our easy to read comparison grids. The grids are divided into 4 categories, depending on the type of community: Independent Living and Retirement, Assisted Living, Memory Care and Skilled Nursing. Why Hire an Elder Law Attorney?

Elder law attorneys may specialize in estate planning, incapacity planning, and end-of-life care for seniors. They also help older adults remain in their homes as they age and protect them from abuse.

These practitioners are essential because they work to protect a vulnerable population. To plan for their future and their care, seniors and their families should consider hiring an elder law attorney.

How Can an Elder Law Attorney Help My Aging Loved One?

Having a plan for your aging loved one’s care can relieve anxiety for you and the senior. Elder law attorneys can help their clients by providing some of the following services:

Long-Term Care Planning

The number of Americans living past age 65 has exponentially increased over the past few decades and will continue to grow over the next few years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there will be more than 80 million seniors in the U.S. by 2040. This increase requires more people to pay close attention to the need for longterm care planning.

An elder law attorney can help seniors create a plan to pay for their care needs for the rest of their lives. Many seniors may worry about a lack of financial resources to pay for food, rent, medical care, and transportation in the years to come. Others hope to stay in their homes as they age but aren’t sure what the options may be for

in-home care if it becomes necessary. An elder law attorney can help you create a customized plan for your needs and assist you in allocating money to pay for the essentials as you age. In addition, with expertise specific to elder law at the federal level and in your state, they can aid you in determining what public benefits you could qualify for, such as Medicaid and Medicare, and help you successfully apply for them.

Housing

Many older adults report wanting to age in place in communities. Elder law attorneys help their clients achieve this objective by representing them in landlord-tenant and other housing disputes.

For instance, an elder law attorney may help a homeowner with limited mobility who has been unable to maintain their lawn respond to a city ordinance violation. An elder law attorney could help an older adult access benefits and services that allow them to age in place, guiding them through applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and helping them find services such as Meals on Wheels.

Estate Planning Document Preparation

Most people contact an elder law attorney whose expertise includes estate planning when they need end-of-life documents drafted. Yet it is smart to start estate planning when you are still healthy.

Elder law attorneys may draft for their clients such documents as a last will and testament, health care directive,

and power of attorney. By carefully crafting these documents, an attorney can help protect a senior’s legal rights when it comes to their retirement benefits, estate administration, and medical decision-making authority.

At the same time, having a comprehensive estate plan in place may not only ease the stress your family members encounter upon your passing, but also help them avoid any potential disputes regarding their inheritance.

Create a Plan for Incapacity

A related piece of the puzzle is incapacity planning. This could mean having an elder law attorney advise you on documenting your wishes for care at the end of your life, in the wake of a disability, or after a diagnosis of dementia.

An elder law attorney can assist seniors and their families as they try and protect the senior’s financial and physical well-being as their condition progresses.

Guardianship

Elder law attorneys help family members and older adults with guardianship.

This may include a situation in which an older adult has dementia or another condition affecting decisionmaking. In such a case, an elder law attorney can help a concerned family member obtain guardianship. This includes securing a physician’s report, petitioning the court, and attending a hearing.

An older adult might sometimes dispute guardianship, asserting

continued decision-making capacity and wishing to maintain autonomy. Elder law attorneys representing older adults can present evidence to the court regarding their clients’ capacity to handle their own affairs. The attorney may also help support an older adult’s autonomy by recommending less restrictive alternatives to guardianship. These alternative options include limited guardianship and supported decisionmaking. Supported decision-making provides aid while preserving individuals’ rights.

What to Look for in Elder Law Attorneys

It is vital to know what to look for when you are hiring an elder law attorney. You want to have the best partner helping you protect yourself or your loved one. Here are some tips when looking for an elder law attorney:

• Interview multiple attorneys.

• Ask each attorney you meet with about their experience in the area.

• Get a referral from a friend or search for a qualified elder law attorney in your area.

Keeping your elderly loved ones safe is essential to supporting their care and protecting their legacy. A qualified elder law attorney can help you accomplish this and keep your parents, grandparents, or other aging relatives protected.

Passionate about Seniors

At St. Joseph Medical Center, we’ve made changes to provide specialized care tailored to seniors. As the first accredited geriatric ER in KC, we identify seniors who may need extra support during or after their hospitalization.

Our inpatient Senior Behavioral Health Unit provides care for adults over 55 who experience acute behavioral symptoms associated with dementia and/or other mental health conditions.

Paul Hura, MD, Senior Care Services Medical Director shares, “It is an honor and privilege to care for our seniors, and these philosophies remain very important to our physicians, nurses, and entire healthcare teams at St. Joseph Medical Center.”

St. Mary’s Medical Center is a patient-centered community hospital in Blue Springs, MO, providing comprehensive quality care with state-of-theart treatment in a warm, caring environment. With the only accredited Geriatric Emergency Department in Eastern Jackson County, Dr. Michael Liston,

Cardiologist and Chief Medical Officer, understands this well.  “We take caring for seniors to heart”.  St. Mary’s holds numerous Grade A and 5-star ratings, while offering hometown touches such as walk-in 3D Mammograms. As a community partner, St. Mary’s is Your Community Hospital. StMarysKC.com.

In Leavenworth, Saint John Hospital offers Senior Behavioral Health for inpatient care. During a patient’s stay, the unit uses a multi-sensory and multidisciplinary approach to care. Our specialized staff supports patients and family members with comprehensive nursing care 24 hours a day.

“Many times, the slow loss of a loved one’s sense of self and memory is confusing and difficult for the individual and their loved ones through some of the more

difficult aspects of dementia,” says Dr. Amand, Psychiatrist and Medical Director.

Providence Medical Center is a community hospital located in Kansas City, KS. Committed to excellence and award-winning patient care, Providence received an “A” grade on the 2023-24 Lown Institute Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility achieving this honor through strong performance across metrics of health equity, patient outcomes, and value of care, out of more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide. Providence has received a 5-star rating from The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The star award is given based on metrics such as mortality, readmission, patient safety and patient experience. Providence is also nationally recognized in multiple service lines, receiving 18

awards with eight 5-Star ratings, according to research released by Healthgrades.

“Many times, the slow loss of a loved one’s sense of self and memory is confusing and difficult for the individual and their loved ones through some of the more difficult aspects of dementia.”

Medicare 2025 “In A Nutshell” (Parts A, B & Medigap Plans)

Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”

Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance

Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)

$1,676 deductible (per benefit period)

It is possible to pay the $1676 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care.

Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more.

Providers are paid by Medicare assignment.

No coverage outside USA.

No out-of-pocket maximum.

Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

Medicare Part B Medical Insurance

Most people pay monthly $185 (Premium could be higher based on income)

$257 annual deductible. (this can increase each year)

80/20 after deductible.

Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, wellness & other Medicare approved benefits

Most doctors accept Medicare.

No coverage outside the USA.

No out-of-pocket maximum.

Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

A & B are designed for people over age 65 and those with certain disabilities

Supplemental Policy Plans A - N Medigap

Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.

Guarantee Issue at initial enrollment (Other special enrollment periods may be available)

These plans generally pay the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits

When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered

Can provide benefits outside USA

Plans are available through insurance companies.

Important to add Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties.

Must have Part A & B to enroll.

10 Steps to Approach Memory Concerns in Others

If you notice changes in friends, family or others close to you and are concerned for their health — particularly when it involves changes in memory, thinking or behavior — it can be di cult to know what to do or say.

Although it’s natural to be uncertain or nervous about how to offer support, these changes could be a sign of a significant health concern. Use the guide below or print out the PDF to help you feel more confident and prepared as you assess the situation and take action.

Assess the Situation

1. What changes in memory, thinking or behavior do you see?

What’s the person doing — or not doing — that’s out of the ordinary and causing concern?

2. What else is going on?

Various conditions can cause changes in memory, thinking and behavior. What health or lifestyle issues could be a factor? E.g., family stress or health issues like diabetes or depression.

3. Learn about the signs of Alzheimer’s and other dementias and the benefits of an early diagnosis. Visit alz.org/10signs to educate yourself on 10 common warning signs of Alzheimer’s and why it’s

important to know if dementia is causing the changes. Do you notice any of the signs in the person you’re concerned about?

4. Has anyone else noticed the change(s)?

Find out if friends and family have seen changes. What are they?

Take action through

conversation

5. Who should have the conversation to discuss concerns?

It could be you, a trusted family member or friend, or a combination. It’s usually best to speak one-on-one so that the person doesn’t feel threatened by a group, but use your best judgment to determine what will likely be most comfortable for the individual.

6. What is the best time and place to have the conversation?

Have the conversation as soon as possible. In addition to choosing a date and time, consider where the person will feel most comfortable.

7. What will you or the person having the conversation say?

Try the following: • I’ve noticed [change] in you, and I’m concerned. Have you noticed it? Are you worried?

• How have you been feeling lately? You haven’t seemed like yourself.

• I noticed you [specific example] and it worried me. Has anything else like that happened?

8. Offer to go with the person to the doctor.

Ask the person if he or she will see a doctor and show your support by offering to go to the appointment.

Some words of encouragement may include:

• There are lots of things that could be causing this, and dementia may or may not be one of them. Let’s see if the doctor can help us figure out what’s going on.

• The sooner we know what’s causing these problems, the sooner we can address it.

• I think it would give us both peace of mind if we talked with a doctor.

9. If needed, have multiple conversations.

The first conversation may not be successful. Write down some notes about the experience to help plan for the next conversation.

Location:

• Date/time of day

• What worked well?

• What didn’t?

• What was the result?

• What can be done differently next time?

Caregiving Tips: Helping a Loved One in the Later Stages of Parkinson’s

Navigating Parkinson’s disease (PD) can come with many surprises for the person living with the disease and those who love them. Since Parkinson’s progresses, symptoms often begin to complicate daily activities as a person progresses through the stages of PD.

Learning how to manage Parkinson’s is a constantly evolving learning curve that should always be modified to best suit both the needs of the person with Parkinson’s and the care partner. In this article, we highlight tips that can help your loved one adjust to these changes.

MOVING

Movement changes are common in Parkinson’s and can become more difficult to manage in later PD stages. As a care partner, you can help your loved one move safely.

• Check that your loved one’s feet are placed firmly underneath before standing. You may need to help with proper foot placement.

• Remind your loved one to take big steps. People with PD often need “cues” to take long steps as automatic motions become more difficult to perform. Keep cues short and simple, for example by saying, “Big steps.”

• Find an occupational therapist. These rehabilitative experts can help your loved one maintain independence and ways care partners can assist.

FREEZING AND FALLS

People with Parkinson’s sometimes experience freezing episodes, which is the temporary and involuntary inability to move. Freezing is a significant cause of falls, as it creates a feeling like your feet are glued to the floor.

• Avoid tight turns when possible. Instruct your loved one to make wider turns as freezing often happens while turning around in close quarters.

• Make a plan. Consider how you’ll access help in the event of a fall, such as calling a neighbor or friend.

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION

Leaving the home can be difficult, but outings to a doctor’s office or physical therapist are often necessary. Consider methods that promote safety and decrease care partner stress.

• Plan appointments around your loved one’s daily routine. Try to schedule appointments while the person with Parkinson’s is rested and PD medications are working well.

• Maximize your time. If endurance allows, schedule a few appointments on the same day, especially if they are in the same clinic or medical complex.

MEALTIME AND SWALLOWING

Advanced Parkinson’s can cause difficulty with eating and drinking because of movement and swallowing problems. Making adjustments to

mealtimes can help your loved one get the nutrition they need.

• Serve foods that are easy to eat. Avoid tough, dry, or crumbly textures that might be difficult to swallow.

• Focus on hydration. To ensure your loved one is drinking enough fluids, encourage sips of liquid between solid foods.

CARING FOR THE CARE PARTNER

Parkinson’s symptoms change over time, as will your role as a care partner. The most important thing to remember is that if you do not take care of yourself, you will not be able to take care of your loved one.

Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion. Burnout can occur when caregivers don’t get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able, physically or financially. Caregiver burnout symptoms can include:

• Extreme fatigue unrelated to sleep

• Unusual frustration and anger

• Feeling “cloudy” or “foggy.” Often dismissed as age-related change, this can occur as a result of carrying too much responsibility and/or anxiety

These tips can help you navigate your own wellbeing as a care partner:

• Manage stress. Identify what triggers your stress and find ways to control your emotions, like writing in a journal or going for a walk.

• Seek connection. Connect with a Parkinson’s Foundation chapter near you to find local resources and events.

• Accept help. Make a short list of

specific tasks that typically help you care for your loved one, so family and friends know what they can do to help when you need a break.

PARKINSON’S & DEMENTIA

When thinking changes are mild, these symptoms often do not impact everyday life. But as Parkinson’s advances, more profound changes in thinking can occur, including dementia. Dementia is when someone experiences problems with memory and thinking that are advanced and interfere with daily activities and quality of life.

To improve communication, try these strategies:

• Ask one question at a time. Slowing down and asking one thing at a time can be helpful.

• Give hints and cues. Use short and simple phrases to provide cues. Give a short hint if your loved one has difficulty finding a word or loses their train of thought.

• Resist the urge to argue or correct. If your loved one is experiencing a delusion, try to find ways around the situation instead of contradicting them. It can be helpful to keep in mind ‘it is the disease making these accusations, not my loved one.’

• Look for community resources BEFORE you need them. Explore resources in your community, such as the Area Agency on Aging.

Life After A Stroke

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked. Stroke is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States.

Use the acronym F.A.S.T to recognize the signs of a stroke:

F = Face Drooping – Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?

A = Arm Weakness – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech Difficulty – Is speech slurred?

T = Time to call 911

There is no time limit on the recovery journey for stroke survivors and many may find that their goals extend into the chronic period of recovery (i.e., at least six months after the initial stroke event). Continuing to practice what was taught in the hospital and rehabilitation is important, but sometimes the focus is primarily on physical function. Here are some things that are important to discuss with your medical providers as soon as you are medically stable:

1. Sleep: Ask about how sleep can be impacted, how to get in and out of bed, and how to find a comfortable position to support your affected side.

2. Pain management: Ask about what kind of pain can be expected after a stroke, side effects of pain medication, and lifestyle changes you can make.

3. Physical movement: Ask about how you should be exercising and moving your body, how to exercise in a wheelchair or using one hand, and how to find an activity level that does not make the bad kind of pain worse.

4. Nutrition: Ask about changes in taste and smell, how to make sure you are getting enough nutrients, and how to manage weight changes after stroke.

5. Resiliency: Getting better can feel lonely for both the stroke survivor and the caregiver(s). Ask for information on support groups and community wellness programs in your area.

Home Care and Home Health… What’s the Difference?

While both Home Care and Home Health provide services in the home aimed at helping patients achieve health and independence, knowing the di erence between them can help you quickly and e ectively navigate care needs in a family crisis.

Home Health is a clinical or skilled care model that provides medical care by licensed healthcare workers, like nurses, physical therapists, and social workers. Home Health requires a doctor’s order, and patients must meet certain eligibility criteria to receive it. It’s usually prescribed when a patient is discharged from the hospital or rehab facility and sent home but needs additional medical attention to fully rehabilitate. Home Health services help with things like wound care, speech therapy, physical or occupation therapy, IV Therapy and is overseen by a registered nurse. Visits are a few hours a week and are short, generally an hour or less depending on the patient’s needs. It is usually paid for by private insurance, or Medicare - for those over 65 years of age. It typically lasts a few weeks but can be extended if the ordering physician deems it necessary.

Home Care provides nonclinical or non-medical care by professional caregivers, usually CNA’s (Certified Nurse’s Aide) or Home Health Aides. These aides are professionally trained in assisting with ADL’s, or “Activities of Daily Living.” The six most common ADL’s in home care are: Mobility, Bathing, Toileting, Continence Mgmt., Dressing and Feeding. They also assist with IADL’s or “Instrumental Activities of Daily Living” like light housekeeping, laundry, dishes, and medication reminders. Full-Service Home Care agencies may carry an additional insurance policy that allows their caregivers to run errands or provide transportation assistance for things like doctors’ appointments, groceries, and other needs outside of the home. Home Care does not require a doctor’s

order and is usually arranged privately and paid for out of pocket, however, depending on the agency you work with, some will accept Long Term Care Insurance, Veteran Benefits or Medicaid as a form of payment. Unlike Home Health, Home Care is arranged for longer periods of time. Most agencies have minimums and will visit anywhere for a few hours a day, up to around-the-clock 24/7 care. In Home Care, it’s not uncommon for care to continue for months or even years - as long as the patient requires someone to be with them so that they can remain safe at home, they will provide services for them.

Often times, Home Care and Home Health will be providing

services at the same time –having home health manage the medical needs, while home care stays with the patient to manage their personal care needs and keep them safe. When evaluating options for either Home Health or Home Care, the Senior Blue Book provides an index of local agencies in your area, as well as a search tool online where you can review what services they provide, read customer reviews, and contact them directly to ask questions or request an in-home consultation.

RN-REGISTERED NURSE – Assesses patient’s physical needs, develops and coordinates the plan of care, ensures symptom control and management, provides patient/family education as needed

SW-SOCIAL WORKER – Assesses patient and family emotional and social needs, develops a plan of care, and provides counseling and support to meet identified needs, and makes referrals to other providers based on family and patient’s needs

CHAPLAIN – Assesses patient and family spiritual needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, assists with memorial preparations.

VOLUNTEERS – Provides companionship and needed non-medical services for patients and their families, offers support at time of death and during bereavement.

LEVELS OF CARE:

RO-ROUTINE CARE – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in managing the individual’s disease symptoms. Care is provided at the individual’s private residence or in a healthcare facility.

RE-RESPITE CARE – Provided when the family needs time to rest or go out of town for a short time. Care may be provided in a skilled nursing facility. Hospice is responsible for financial arrangements with the facility.

GIP – GENERAL IN-PATIENT

CARE – Provided in a skilled nursing facility when the symptoms cannot be managed elsewhere. The skilled nursing facility must have 24-hour R.N. coverage as deemed by Medicare guidelines. General in-patient care is usually short in duration. This higher level of care is due to symptoms which are out of control and more intensive nursing services are required. The room

and board are covered by hospice during this period.

CC-CONTINUOUS CARE – Provided to prevent the individual from going to the hospital when a crisis occurs. It also is given when more help is needed to assist the individual and family in coping with the crisis. This level of care is usually provided to the patient at their private residence or in a personal care home or assisted living facility. The criteria for continuous care may include: Severe pain or symptoms which are out of control, psychotic episodes, breakdown of caregiver, imminent death and family unable to cope. Continuous care is typically reserved for crises that require a constant presence by a nurse or care team.

THERAPY SERVICES PROVIDED:

AR-AROMA THERAPY – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in maintaining the individual’s symptom management. Care is provided at the individual’s private residence, a retirement community, an assisted living, or a skilled nursing facility.

MA-MASSAGE THERAPY – Used as a method for relaxation to alleviate stress, anxiety and pain with a light hands-on approach, as well as providing an alternative to those who can’t take medication

or prefer not to. Massage therapy has become essential in hospice care. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

MU-MUSIC THERAPY – Music

Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. A music therapist creates goals and objectives for their patients and uses music activities and music experiences (listening, composition, improvisation, or playing/singing a familiar song) in order to achieve those goals. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

P-PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a four-legged creature to brighten the day of a terminally ill patient. Pet therapy teams visit with patients wherever they reside – at home or in professional care settings. Studies have shown many benefits of pet companionship, ranging from reduced blood pressure and anxiety to relief from boredom, pain and loneliness. This service is not reimbursed by Medicare.

24/7 ADMISSIONS – If a patient qualifies for hospice care, they should be admitted as early as the family requests. Many agencies admit patients to hospice, 24/7, evenings weekends, and holidays. Continued on next page 110

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS –

Grief is the normal and universal reaction humans have to the loss of those they love. When your loved one passes, you may go through a period of bereavement and experience grief. Many hospice companies provide Grief Groups that meet and address issues of grief in a supportive group setting.

HOME HEALTH

– Indicates whether the hospice agency has a sister home health agency that will provide assistance with medically based home health needs such as nursing services, home health aide services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy or speech therapy.

INDIGENT PATIENTS

– Does the hospice accept non funded or indigent patients? This is usually on a case by case basis and at

the determination of the hospice company. Many have a non-profit organization that can help support the care of non-covered patients.

PAIN PUMPS AVAILABLE –

Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications. Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency.

PALLIATIVE CARE

– Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.

Finding Compassion and Hope Through Hospice

The end of a person’s life is a significant time when they are able to reflect on their life and accomplishments, work through their regrets and challenges, and spend their remaining days with friends and family in comfort and peace.

For families whose loved one is experiencing a serious illness or life-limiting condition, this precious time is one of life’s most meaningful milestones.

As a provider of end-of-life care, hope for Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care does not necessarily lie in recovery; rather, it lies in ensuring the best quality of life for the people in our care. As our mission states, we provide expert care, peace of mind, comfort,

We easily associate hope with a beginning: the birth of a new baby, the start of adulthood at high school graduation, or the pursuit of a new career.

guidance, and hope to people who are affected by serious illness or by grief. Hospice gives families the peace of mind to walk together with their loved ones through the end-of-life journey, and through the grief and healing journey. We easily associate hope with

a beginning: the birth of a new baby, the start of adulthood at high school graduation, or the pursuit of a new career. Hospice providers understand that hope is found throughout life. All families have hope that the end of their loved one’s life will be beautiful and memorable. Honoring that hope affirms that their life matters, and allows the impact someone made to carry on after their death. Hospice honors the value of life by ensuring physical and emotional comfort and creating space for patients and their families to spend time together in peace. Kansas City Hospice also understands the importance of supporting families through their own grief and healing journey, which often begins before death and extends far beyond the loss of a loved one. This is why we

also provide access to community grief support at no charge through our Solace House Center for Grief and Healing.

Hope doesn’t just represent what the future can hold – a cure, more time, major accomplishments –hope can be lived in the moment. It can simply be the ability to enjoy today and share moments of joy with those around you, unencumbered by the hardships of the past or the challenges of the future. It is through hospice that families are given the gift to walk together through one of life’s most significant milestones – the end of life.

AGE RESTRICTIONS – Some

communities have a restriction on the youngest age they are allowed to accept. These restrictions vary by community.

ALZHEIMER’S / DEMENTIA ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY –

Communities are typically bedroom-style rental units with common areas for dining and activities. Many are locked for residents’ safety. Specifically trained staff usually serves the special needs of this population. Amenities vary for each community.

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY –

these services without a specific license.

DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING & URBAN DEVELOPMENT (HUD)

– helps apartment owners offer reduced rents to low-income tenants.

HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER PROGRAM –

(Sec 8) - find your own place and use the voucher to pay for all or part of the rent. Participating households are required to pay the greater of 10% of their gross annual income or 30% of their adjusted income towards rent. To qualify, a household’s annual income must not exceed the applicable income limit for the area as adjusted by family size.

(Sec 236) Property owners in this program make mortgage payments that are based on a 1% mortgage interest rate. HUD then provides a subsidy to their lender to cover the difference between 1% and the market interest rate on the property’s loan. Participating households are required to pay rent equal to the greater of 30% of their adjusted income (not to exceed the market rent) or the basic rent amount set by HUD for that particular property. Any amount paid by the household that is more than basic rent is considered

excess rent, which the owner pays back to HUD in repayment of the subsidy.

INDEPENDENT HOUSING –

Amenities and nursing services vary greatly between homes. Ask about their services when you tour. They are also referred to as personal board and care homes. TRACH CARE - Refers to care administered to patients who have undergone a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). The surgeon inserts a tube into the opening to bypass an obstruction, allow air to get to the lungs, or remove secretions.

VENTILATOR - Moves breatheable air into and out of the lungs, to provide the mechanism of breathing for a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or is breathing insufficiently.

WANDERGUARD - Offered at some facilities. A resident with memory loss or confusion wears a small discrete pendant. Each external door in the care home is fitted with a radio detector which detects when a pendant moves near an exit. When is the Right Time for Assisted Living?

Every person needs di erent things. Babies need constant attention. Teenagers need space. Adults need help raising their babies and teens. And seniors need the comfort and safety of an assisted living community.

As a senior living community located in the heart of the Midwest, we understand the unique concerns and considerations of individuals in this region. Let’s talk about the right time for seniors to go into an assisted living community and get the attention they need and the life they deserve.

MAINTAINING INDEPENDENCE AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are one of the best indicators of self-sufficiency and independent living. ADLs include tasks such as personal hygiene, meal preparation, medication management, or even navigating the home. When your loved one starts struggling to do these tasks, it may be time to explore assisted living options.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Health and safety is no laughing matter. Chronic and painful conditions can limit and isolate a person from healthy interactions and medical care. Especially when seniors live alone, the risks are too great for accidents. Assisted living

communities are equipped to provide the necessary support and care to ensure every senior’s safety and well-being.

LONELINESS AND SOCIAL ISOLATION

Loneliness and social isolation significantly impact seniors’ mental and emotional well-being. If a senior finds themself alone, and craving social interaction and companionship, they may be ready for a change. Senior living communities offer so many different ways to expand a senior’s friend circle and make lasting connections. Enjoying a sense of community is important for overall happiness and quality of life.

HOME MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP

Homes hold a special place in our hearts. They’re a chest of memories, laughs, and tears. But with all the good comes a lot of work. There comes a time when maintaining a home is too much work and increasingly difficult to manage. Between cleaning, yard work, home repairs, and maintenance, the tasks are overwhelming and stressful. Assisted living communities ease the burden and take care of all those responsibilities so that your loved one can enjoy life and pursue other interests.

Continued on page 132

When is the Right Time for Assisted Living?

Continued from page 131

FAMILY CAREGIVER STRESS

Before most seniors enter an assisted living community, their family is normally their caregiver. As wonderful and supportive as this is, it’s incredibly stressful for the family caregiver. A caregiver plays a major role in every aspect of life for the senior. And to fulfill those needs, they need to make sacrifices in their own life, which often means spending less time with their own family. This can be physically and emotionally draining. Switching to a senior living community can be just the change everyone involved needs to balance life and get the necessary support and care.

There’s no time like the present to make a change in your senior’s living situation. We always recommend making the change sooner rather than later so that you can do as much research as possible without feeling rushed. This decision is hard. There’s so much involved in making the right choice. But if your loved one is struggling with any of the challenges listed above, the right time to switch to an assisted living community is now.

MEDICARE

HOME HEALTH

Be homebound

Home Health Agency providing care must be Medicare-certified

PRIVATE DUTY HOME CARE

Assist with activities of daily living (ex. bathing, dressing, bathroom)

Companion care and homemaker services (ex. shopping, cleaning, laundry, meal prep, transportation)

The main difference between Medicare

Home Health and Private Pay Home is the funding source and eligibility criteria.

Medicare is government-funded and only available to eligible individuals based on specific criteria. Private Pay is paid for out-ofpocket or by Long Term Care Insurance by the person receiving care or their families. This care is accessible to anyone who can afford it.
