Diagnosing the Need for Home Care

As our senior population grows, there is an increasing need for human assistance. Families historically fi lled this need, but today they live farther apart and work outside the home. In response, caregiving has become a profession.

Identifi cation of a need for assistance can be diffi cult because a senior’s abilities may decline gradually, they may be reluctant to admit declining ability and families may lack knowledge of home care options. The following list will tip you off to a potential need. • Decline in personal hygiene • Depression or confusion • Limited mobility /Fear of driving • Inability to manage medications or fi nances • Injuries or lack of cleanliness at home • Change in diet

McKenney Home Care will provide a free, in-home evaluation. A nurse will visit the individual’s home to evaluate and discuss home care needs. A schedule can be developed for aides to assist with activities such as meal preparation, assistance with bathing and medications, light housekeeping and more.
