Diagnosing the Need for Home Care As our senior population grows, there is an increasing need for human assistance. Families historically filled this need, but today they live farther apart and work outside the home. In response, caregiving has become a profession. Identification of a need for assistance can be difficult because a senior’s abilities may decline gradually, they may be reluctant to admit declining ability and families may lack knowledge of home care options. A nurse will visit the individual’s home to evaluate and discuss home care needs. A schedule can be developed for aides to assist with activities such as meal preparation, assistance with bathing and medications, light housekeeping and more.
