ADULT DAY PROGRAMS

Adult day programs are for individuals who need a place to stay during the day because of difficulty functioning alone.

ActivAge Day Time Senior Care (ad p32 INS)

What’s the Secret to a Long, Independent Life?

You can’t read the news without hearing confusing reports on how to age in a healthy way.

Is it drinking a glass of wine every day? A routine sleep schedule? Eating more eggs – or fewer eggs?

Whether you’re 45 or 75, what can you do to live a longer and healthier life?

The key is having health care providers who treat you as a whole person, says Deb Geihsler, CEO and Co-founder of

best-selling author and international expert in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Today, Grey Matters is the first primary care clinic in the nation that focuses solely on managing cognitive health and preventing cognitive decline by combining Dr. Bredesen’s protocols with a primary care approach.

Patient testimonials show the clinic is making a difference. Said one patient: “I feel like a totally different person.

Grey Matters Health in Sarasota.

“If you’re just being treated for your diabetes or heart disease, who is managing your overall health? You’re a whole person, and that’s how you should be treated,” she said.

“We use the principles of functional medicine to identify the root causes of your health concerns – not just your symptoms to promote lasting wellness. That means we treat you with primary and integrated care that’s evidencebased, plus ongoing support throughout your life.”

Along with primary care and functional medicine, Grey Matters specializes in preventing, delaying or even reversing cognitive decline. Geihsler co-founded Grey Matters with Dale Bredesen, M.D.,

Even my family members have noticed a difference in my behavior. We feel like we have someone who is really taking care of us.”

Editor’s Note: Grey Matters is located at 950 S. Tamiami Trail, Suite 210, Sarasota. Grey Matters also has locations in Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra Beach, as well as treating patients around the nation remotely.

My Last Will and Testament Will Shield My Estate From Probate, Right? Perhaps…

A common misconception is that having a Last Will and Testament ensures assets avoid probate entirely. However, this isn’t entirely accurate. A Will serves as instructions for how your assets should be distributed after your death and designates a Personal Representative to oversee this distribution. Depending on the nature of your assets, not all will be governed by your Will, and some will still need to go through probate to be transferred to your beneficiaries. For instance, assets like bank accounts with joint owners or designated beneficiaries will automatically pass to those individuals, and not to those named in your Will. Similarly, real estate may require probate in order to transfer ownership as directed in the Will. Another circumstance that could impact distribution involves joint owners or specific legal factors such as marriage or minor children, which might disrupt your intended distribution plan. Seeking advice from an attorney can help ensure your wishes are executed correctly.

Ho Ho Buys Cars

In the landscape of aging populations, the challenges of transitioning out of driving are profound and often emotional.

For Howard Horowitz, founder of HO HO BUYS CARS, this realization dawned after decades in the automotive industry. What began as a humble start—selling cars from his driveway—evolved into a comprehensive service catering not just to the transactional needs of selling vehicles but to the deeper, personal aspects of life transitions, particularly for seniors; for a Fast, Easy & Safe Transaction.

“Opening HO HO BUYS CARS seven years ago was a natural progression,” Howard reflects. “We started receiving calls from families and professionals seeking help with vehicle sales in estate situations. It became clear that our senior community needed a trusted, compassionate option during this sensitive phase of life.”

What sets Howard’s service apart is not just the efficiency of handling paperwork or providing immediate payment in certified funds— it’s the personal touch. “We go beyond the transaction,” Howard emphasizes. “It’s about transparency, safety, and ensuring integrity in every interaction.

“We go beyond the transaction,” Howard emphasizes. “It’s about transparency, safety, and ensuring integrity in every interaction.

With over 35 years of experience, Howard has seen the evolution of car sales from local auctions to managing a company that buys and sells thousands of vehicles annually. However, it was through direct interactions with attorneys, realtors, and families facing estate matters that he recognized a gap in the market: a lack of empathetic, straightforward solutions for seniors transitioning away from driving, having that extra vehicle that is no longer needed, or finding someone to be able to deal with complex transactions.

Our flexible appointments and willingness to come directly to seniors in assisted living facilities reflect our commitment to making this process as stress-free as possible.” He literally comes right to your door, dealing directly with the Owner.

This dedication has earned the company over 400 Five (5) Star Google Reviews and a A+ Rating with the Better Business Bureau, reflecting the trust and respect they’ve garnered in the community.

Procrastination Can Lead to Tragic Results in Estate Planning

If you are like most of my clients, you’ve been thinking about putting together an estate plan but, keep putting it off.

My fortunate clients come and see me before a tragic event happens. However, all too often I get a call after a severe medical event happens or even a death of a spouse, and the right documents were not put in place before that tragic event. Keep in mind, without a Florida compliant power of attorney, you cannot handle your spouse’s affairs or sell jointly owned property. You then must go through the extensive time and expense of a guardianship which causes delays and added stress in an

already stressful situation.

Another tragic situation can occur in a second marriage where both parties have kids from a prior marriage and no Will or Trust is in place. Under Florida intestacy laws, children from a prior marriage get 50% of your assets when you pass with the other 50% going to your spouse. If your spouse needs those funds to survive, and your kids don’t like your spouse, I’ve seen devastatingly heartbreaking results.

If you want to learn how to protect your spouse and children from tragedy, call 941-867-6865 for a free consultation today.

How to Know When It’s Time to Move Your Parents to Senior Living

Unfortunately, in our society people often don’t want to address the challenges of aging until they absolutely have to. At Oasis Senior Advisors, we strongly advise you to be proactive, not reactive.

So how do you know when it’s time to act? Aging seniors tend to wear their pride on their sleeve, and they’ll do whatever they can to hide their frailties with you. Pay close attention when you talk to them or visit. Here are some signs that it’s time to consider bringing in home health care or looking at senior living communities:

• Isolation causing loneliness and possibly depression. Studies have shown that socialization and mental stimulation are key components to healthy aging. Moving to a senior living community is usually the best solution so they can make friends, socialize during meals, participate in activities with little effort, and become part of a community.

• Loss of driver’s license. This is such a difficult subject to broach, even when we know our loved one is not only endangering herself, but also the other drivers on the road. It becomes much easier to ask them to stop driving if you can offer a viable solution such as having a caregiver who drives or moving to a senior living community that provides transportation.

• Frequent falls. When an older adult falls, it can often mark the beginning of a great decline in physical condition and health status. Please do everything in your power to obtain assistance in the home or move them to a senior living community before a life changing fall happens!

• Drastic weight loss. Malnutrition in older adults often happens when he or she can no longer shop and/or prepare meals adequately.

• Increased forgetfulness or confusion. This is when it becomes critical to have a caregiver looking out for your loved one, either in the home or at a senior living community.

• You are spending an inordinate amount of time caring for your loved one. You might be going to their home to help them bathe, get dressed, or even use the toilet. It’s very stressful to have to give up so much of your own time, and it puts your loved ones in a situation that is often uncomfortable since your parent/child roles are now being reversed. It’s healthier to have a hired caregiver–either in the home or at a senior living community–performing these duties. This allows you to resume your role as the child or other caring relative. Remember you don’t have to go it alone. There are plenty of local resources including a network of Certified Senor Advisors® (CSAs ) such as myself who are here to help.

Platinum Benefit Services specializes in obtaining Long Term Care Medicaid and Veteran Aid and Attendance benefits for those who seek financial assistance for home health aide, assisted living arrangements or long term nursing home care.

Platinum originated in 2000. Over the years Platinum has helped more than 16,000 (as of 2024) families qualify for Medicaid benefits and saved those families billions of dollars in assets. At Platinum, we offer families a free in person consultation to review all the different benefit qualifiers to determine the best solution for your family’s situation. We understand this process can be extremely difficult and overwhelming, but we are here to help! We hope Platinum Benefit Services will be your Long-Term Care Benefits Professional Service.

Medicare 2024 “In A Nutshell” (Parts A, B & Medigap Plans)

Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.”

Medicare Part A

Hospital Insurance

Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)

$1,632 deductible (per benefit period)

It is possible to pay the $1632 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care.

Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more.

Providers are paid by Medicare assignment.

No coverage outside USA.

No out-of-pocket maximum.

Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

Medicare Part B

Medical Insurance

Most people pay monthly $174.70 (Premium could be higher based on income)

$240 annual deductible. (this can increase each year)

80/20 after deductible.

Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, wellness & other Medicare approved benefits

Most doctors accept Medicare.

No coverage outside the USA.

No out-of-pocket maximum.

Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

A & B are designed for people over age 65 and those with certain disabilities

Supplemental Policy Plans A - F Medigap

Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.

Guarantee Issue at initial enrollment (Other special enrollment periods may be avalable)

These plans generally pay the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits

When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered

Can provide benefits outside USA

Plans are available through insurance companies.

Important to add Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties.

Must have Part A & B to enroll.

There is NO additional cost to use the services of a full time insurance professional.

Please call us or a broker in your local area for additional assistance.

Medicare 2024 “In A Nutshell” Med Advantage (Part C) with RX (Part D)

Medicare Advantage plans are governed by Medicare. They are only offered through insurance companies that have an annual contract with Medicare. They are NOT the same as Medigap policies. They must cover all Medicare approved services. Most Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage.

Advantage Plans

Part C

INSTEAD of a Medigap Plan (A-F)

Premium varies by company and coverage. (Same premium for all ages).

Part B premium $174.70 is still paid (Premium can be higher depending on income)

There are many plan types available: PPO, HMO, HSA, etc.

Plans have co-pays and / or coinsurance for covered benefits & services.

Preventive care is covered.

Plans have an annual out-of pocket maximum.

Plans may have additional services and discounts, including dental, vision, gym membership & more.

There is an Annual Election Period (AEP) which runs from October 15–December 7 of each year. This is the time to make changes in company or coverage.

Must have Part A & B to enroll.

Medicare Part D Drug Program

Premium varies by company and coverage. (Same premium for all ages).

Plans are generally a variation of the following:

Deductible (Phase I)

$0–$545 deductible

Initial Coverage (Phase II) co-pay coverage until the total cost of the drugs = $5,030

Coverage Gap / Doughnut Hole (Phase III)

The member now pays much more for covered drugs 25% generic / 25% brand. There is a drug manufacturer discount on certain drugs that can count toward the “True out-of-pocket” (TrOOP). You remain here until the $8,000 (TrOOP) has been met. It’s estimated you will pay about $3,300 of the $8,000.

Catastrophic Coverage (Phase IV)

$0 for covered drugs on the plan’s formulary for the rest of the calendar year

Approved formulary insulins are no more than $35 per month.

Part D can be separate with Medigap & PFFS plans. There is a penalty for late enrollment into Part D.

Annual Election Period is Oct 15–Dec 7 each year

Must have Part A or B to enroll.

People on the Florida Gulf Coast are Switching to Value-Based Care and Never Looking Back.

Adults ages 60+ are looking for a more caring approach to primary care.

Ever wonder why some doctors spend so little time with their patients? Healthcare companies often charge a fee for each service. This puts a lot of pressure on doctors to see as many patients as possible.

Primary care at ArchWell Health is different.

Ever since we opened centers in neighborhoods throughout the Florida Gulf Coast, people have been making the move to our unique communitycentric brand of primary care.

Because of our value-based care approach, our doctors get paid to keep a smaller number of patients healthier. Each member gets a dedicated team of healthcare professionals who work together to provide you with personalized solutions. The focus always stays on keeping you healthier over the long term—not just treating you when you’re sick.

It’s about prevention...and more.

Switching to value-based care at ArchWell Health means focusing on health, not just services. The better your overall health, the fewer expensive treatments you’re likely to need, and the more you’ll be able to enjoy life to its fullest.

Our members enjoy:

• Longer appointments with a doctor who really listens

• Routine wellness visits as often as you need them

• Personalized care focused on overall wellness

ArchWell Health offers a “whole health” approach to healthcare.

Our primary care program is designed to prevent illness while keeping you healthy and happy in every aspect of your life. We do our best to help you understand—and meet—all of your health goals in a more comprehensive way.

Your membership includes:

• Same-day appointments

• On-site testing and health screenings

• 24-hour phone support

• Transportation assistance (if needed)

• Referrals to specialists

Ready to see if value-based care at ArchWell Health is a better fit for your healthcare needs?

HOME HEALTH DEFINITIONS

This guide contains information about health care services provided in the home. Such services may be needed during recovery after a hospital stay or to help a disabled or elderly person live independently in their own home.

Home Health Care Services

• Health care services offered in the home may include:

•Nursing care

• Physical, occupational, respiratory or speech therapy

•Home health aide services

•Medical social services

•Nutritional counseling

•Medical equipment and supplies

•Homemaker/companion services

HOMEMAKER/COMPANION SERVICES

Services provided by homemakers and companions include housekeeping, meals, shopping, and trips outside the home. These services can also be offered by a home health agency, nurse registry, or hospice.

HOME HEALTH AGENCIES

Home health agencies provide nursing care; physical, speech, occupational, respiratory and IV therapy; home health aide and homemaker/companion services; home medical equipment; nutritional guidance; and medical social services in the patient’s home or place of residence. These agencies are required to carry liability and

workers compensation insurance on all employees.

These employees are supervised and working under the direction of a licensed practitioner. These services can be paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, Long Term Care Insurance and private pay.

NURSE REGISTRIES

An agency that offers health care related contracts for nurses, home health aides, certified nursing assistants, homemakers, and companions in a patient’s home and as temporary staff to health care facilities.

HOME MEDICAL EQUIPMENT PROVIDERS

Home medical equipment providers sell or rent home medical equipment and services for use in a patient’s home or place of residence. Equipment includes, though is not limited to, oxygen, respiratory equipment and customized wheelchairs. Services include delivery, set up, instruction and maintenance of equipment. A home health agency or hospice can also provide this service.

MEDICARE HOME HEALTH AGENCY:

If you have Medicare, you can use your home health benefits if you meet all the following conditions: You must be under the care of a doctor and you must be getting services under a plan of care established and reviewed regularly by a doctor. You must need, and

a doctor must certify that you need, one or more of the following: Intermittent skilled nursing care, physical therapy, speech-language, pathology services, continued occupational therapy. The home health agency caring for you must be approved by Medicare (Medicare-certified). You must be homebound, and a doctor must certify that you’re homebound. A person may leave home for medical treatment or short, infrequent absences for non-medical reasons, such as attending religious services. You can still get home health care if you attend adult day care, but you would get the home care services in your home. Eligibility is also based on the amount of services you need. If you meet the conditions above, Medicare pays for your covered home health services for as long as you’re eligible and your doctor certifies you need them.

SKR Home & Health Care Solutions

“When my father died suddenly at age 58, my life changed forever. I vowed to myself that day that I would try to assist people that could be in the same situation or have a similar experience.”

SKR Home and Health Care Solutions was created out of this premise. Founded in 2010, SKR’s attention to detail, individualized care planning, and the ability to be creative in solutions for clients, has created a niche that is different than our competition. SKR is a private pay concierge service that, in your home, includes skilled nursing care, post-op and pre-op, IV Hydration and IV antibiotics per doctors’ orders, and overnight care of patients of plastic surgeons after surgery. SKR is

proud to also offer services for mental health. We offer non-medical services like traditional companion and respite care. The word SOLUTIONS in SKR’s name was by design. When you call, Susan answers and designs a care plan for your needs. SKR’s success is its unrelenting effort to have all clients cared for as though they were family of SKR’s leadership.

Testimonial

The main difference between Medicare

Home Health and Private Pay Home is the funding source and eligibility criteria. Medicare is government-funded and only available to eligible individuals based on specific criteria. Private Pay is paid for out-ofpocket or by Long Term Care Insurance by the person receiving care or their families. This care is accessible to anyone who can afford it.

INDEPENDENT LIVING DEFINITIONS

ACTIVE ADULT RETIREMENT

COMMUNITY: Active adult communities offer independent, relatively maintenance-free living to residents aged 55 and over. In “age restricted” active adult communities, 80% of homeowners must be 55 and over, while “age-targeted” communities simply market to the 55+ crowd.

INDEPENDENT LIVING (IL):

Communities designed specifically for the aging adult to enhance quality of life and remain independent as long as possible. A community may offer annual rentals or month-to-month. Independent Communities provide residents with convenient access to dining & meal plans, entertainment and social activities, transportation, housekeeping & laundry, maintenance, wellness clinics, and access to third party medical services. Apartment styles vary and can include studios, one bedrooms, or two bedrooms. Communities offer amenities such as full kitchens, on-site pool, fitness center, walking paths, and more. These communities are NOT licensed to provide personal/nursing care.

SUPERVISED INDEPENDENT LIVING:

If you or your loved one may not need all the benefits of assisted living, then supervised independent living may be the right option for you. It’s the perfect bridge between being completely independent and not necessarily needing all of the care assisted living residents may need. Traditional independent options plus the option of adding ala carte personal care services as needed.

CCRC/LIFECARE: Continuing Care

Retirement Community otherwise known as Life Care, offers a campusstyle environment that may include villas, apartments or condos, assisted living, and skilled nursing services. A large endowment fee is usually required that entitles residents to use assisted or skilled services when needed throughout their lifetime. Residents “purchase” their villa or condo and then pay monthly maintenance fees. Payor sources accepted are private pay in villas/ apartments/condos and some insurance plans in AL. See SNF for payor sources.

Live the Life You Deserve

at The Alloro at University Groves

Nowadays, we hear a lot about the notion of ‘living your best life,’ and the idea of prioritizing your overall wellness and happiness As more and more newly-minted seniors continue to embrace this concept, a new type of 55+ living experience has emerged - ActiveAdult communities. Featuring robust activity and event calendars and resort-inspired amenities, these facilities cater to those who elect to shed the burdens of home ownership and maintenance in favor of a downsized, hasslefree life. They do not feature the higher level of medical service and support that one might expect to see at a more traditional ‘old folks’ home,’ instead offering residents

an experience more comparable to a high-end vacation – a tradeoff that has proven extremely desirable to this new generation of young senior.

In Sarasota, Florida, The Alloro at University Groves has taken this idea to the next level. The Alloro team has recognized that the needs of the modern senior have evolved and has gone to great lengths to emphasize providing its residents

Luxurious resort living community for those 55+

the freedom they need to live the life they deserve – one that allows them to choose between countless ways to enjoy each day in their brand-new, high-end community. Thankfully, this brand-new community offers them everything needed to tailor their retirement experience to a perfect fit. Whether it’s a relaxing day sunbathing at the property’s pool and spa, a beauty treatment at the on-site salon, a workout in the state-of-the-art fitness center or pickleball court, a leisurely walk in the dog park or even just a mellow night at home in their spacious one- or two-bedroom apartment, residents have access to activities and resort inspired amenities right at their fingertips.

Exciting still, Alloro residents

are able to take full advantage of their new home’s prime location. Conveniently located just a short drive from Sarasota’s bustling downtown and many of the region’s top shopping, dining and entertainment destinations, Alloro community members have no shortage of exciting, fun and enjoyable outings just a stone’s throw from their beautiful new apartment.

ASSISTED LIVING DEFINITIONS

WHAT ARE ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES?

Assisted living provides a combination of housing, personal care services, and health care designed to respond to individuals who need assistance with normal daily activities in a way that promotes maximum independence. Services include, but are not limited to:

• Nutritional meals and special diets

• Supervision and assistance with personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers, and eating)

• Health monitoring

• Assistance with self-administration of medications

• Arrange for health care and mental health services

• Provide or arrange for transportation to medical appointments

• Housekeeping and Laundry services

• Daily social and leisure activities

• Supervise residents with dementia and/or cognitive impairments

• Provide or arrange for rehabilitative services

• Provide escort services to medical appointments

• Educational programs to promote health and prevent illness

TYPES OF ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY LICENSES:

There are four types of assisted living licenses. A community must have a standard assisted living community license in order to operate in the state of Florida. The other four licenses can be added in order for the community to provide services designated outside the spectrum of a standard assisted living community license.

STANDARD LICENSE: A residential community that provides direct physical assistance with or the supervision of activities of daily living, assistance with medication(s) and other similar services.

LIMITED NURSING SERVICES

(LNS) LICENSE: An assisted living community with a LNS license provides the same services as a Standard License Community as well as nursing services provided by licensed nurses within the scope of their nursing practice. The resident would still need to meet admission and continued residency criteria. LNS services include but are not limited to:

• Nursing assessments

• Administration of medications

• Measurement and recording of vital signs and weight

• Dietary management, including special diets, monitoring nutrition, food, and fluid intake

• Diabetes management, oxygen administration, and wound care

EXTENDED CONGREGATE CARE

(ECC) LICENSE: An assisted living community with an ECC license allows a resident to age in place. In addition to LNS services, ECC communitites provide:

• Total help with bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting

• Assistance with (non-nasogastric) tube feeding

LIMITED MENTAL HEALTH LICENSE:

An assisted living community that serves three or more mental health residents. The basic services of assisted living are provided to the resident. In addition to these services, LMH license provides mental heatlh services to support the individual.

MEMORY CARE: These are licensed assisted living communities that specialize in delivering care to residents suffering from a cognitive impairment. These include but are not limited to: mild cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer’s. Communities are secure for residents’ safety and provide 24-hour supervised care. The same license rules apply as assisted living. Staff members are trained for the special needs of this population.

SHORT TERM/RESPITE CARE:

Circumstances require a caregiver to seek temporary senior housing for

your loved one. Knowing they can move seamlessly into an emergency care environment that supports the wellness needs of seniors allows peace of mind when you are called away for business or vacation, or if you just need a short break from caregiving.

ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING (ADLs):

Define the personal care services available in assisted living and include bathing, dressing, grooming, bathroom assistance, eating and ambulation. Medication Administration and transferring are not ADLs but are factors in determining a person’s level of functioning.

ADULT DAY STAY PROGRAMS:

There are two general types of adult day care programs. One is based on a medical model and the other on a social model. The medical model provides comprehensive medical, therapeutic, and rehabilitation day treatment. The social model offers supervised activities, peer support, companionship, and recreation. Both models assist older adults and those with chronic conditions to remain as independent as possible, for as long as possible.

ASSISTED LIVING MEDICAID WAIVER

The waiver is available to people who are 60 or older who qualify for Medicaid and are eligible under SSI, MEDS-AD, or ICP. The waiver program does not cover the entire bill in a assisted living community.

SMALL ASSISTED LIVING HOMES

4

This 7,000 square foot assisted living care home was designed in 1994 to care for 16 residents in a comfortable homey atmosphere.

Our priority is to honor our resident’s dignity, independence, and choice by providing loving, caring and personal attention allowing them to age in place without fear of being forced into a commercialized or institutional setting. Because we are not corporately owned, you can expect a personalized experience. The entrances are secured by a coded access system to provide as safe an environment as possible.

Throughout our large, residential home you will find several comfortable sitting areas, a lovely dining room and

charming fireplace. Residents enjoy a screened front porch, private fenced courtyard and over two acres of gardens and trees that are filled with birds and butterflies visiting our tropical flowers. Families are always welcome and encouraged to visit.

Inglenook is proud to have received the “Best of Englewood Reader’s Choice Award” from the Englewood Sun Herald.

Inglenook’s owners are a married couple who are both registered nurses and live onsite with their residents, providing the most intimate loving care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

DESIGNED FOR

What Does Memory Care Look Like at The Ranch Assisted Living Facility?

Memory Care is specialized care provided within a licensed Assisted Living Facility.

Memory Care is designed to assist people living with the challenges of Alzheimer and other forms of dementia. Programs and activities are tailored to each person’s interest and to help promote independence and cognitive abilities while enjoying individual passions and hobbies.

The Ranch Assisted Living Facility provides a sheltered and secure community that provides peace of mind to families and freedom of movement within the facility and its grounds.

Consistency of staff and familiar surroundings are necessary to provide our residents with the sense of security and family that they need to thrive in their living environment.

Our staff receives ongoing specialized dementia training that helps them focus on getting to know our residents and their families and enable them to create a sense of family and comfort so that the resident can thrive. This familiarity helps our staff anticipate their individual needs and address any health or cognitive concerns as they arise.

Editor’s Note: For more information on The Ranch Assisted Living Facility and our tailored approach to memory care please contact Melissa Bongart at 941-504-9412

SKILLED NURSING DEFINITIONS

SKILLED NURSING COMMUNITY

(SNF): This level of care is typically found in a nursing center or a transitional care unit in a hospital. Daily rates typically include a furnished bedroom & a private or shared bath, meals, activities, transportation, phone service, cable television and all personal/nursing care. Payor sources usually accepted are Medicare, Medicaid, VA, some insurance plans & private sources.

METHODS OF PAYMENT: Not all nursing homes accept all forms of payments. Furthermore, some nursing homes are limited in the number of beds available for a particular payment form.

MEDICARE: Medicare is a Federal program that serves people 65 and older and those with certain disabilities, regardless of income. Qualified individuals are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A, but must apply to become eligible for Part B coverage. Medicare generally pays for the first twenty days in a nursing home following a hospital stay of at least three days. Medicare generally pays a portion of the nursing home bill (after the first 20 days) for up to 100 days per year.

MEDICAID: Medicaid is a stateadministered medical assistance program that serves low-income families, those 65 and older, people

who are blind, and people who are disabled. You must apply and qualify for Medicaid before you are eligible for Medicaid coverage. Schedule an appointment with your local Department of Children and Family Services’ Medicaid Eligibility office to determine if you are financially eligible for Medicaid. Applicants must demonstrate that assets and income are below a maximum level, as well as other criteria in order to be eligible. Medicaid applicants must also meet medical eligibility for nursing home placement.

SPEECH THERAPY (ST): Assesses and treats speech and swallowing disorders. Provides individually designed treatment programs to maximize communicative effectiveness for the client, such as stroke, head injury, laryngectomy, voice disorders, as well as cognitive deficits.

TRACH CARE: Refers to care administered to patients who have undergone a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). The surgeon inserts a tube into the opening to bypass an obstruction, allow air to get to the lungs, or remove secretions.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (OT):

ability to carry out normal daily activity such as feeding, dressing, grooming, and performing household tasks. Guides client through specialized regimes and encourages sensory and muscle return. Exercises and activities are used to increase upper body extremity function.

PHYSICAL

THERAPY (PT): Refers to assessing and treating large motor function, utilizing rehabilitative techniques of exercise, gait training, prosthetics, and heat to restore the client to his/ her highest functional level of strength, range of motion and mobility.

ABOUT THE AGENCY FOR HEALTH CARE ADMINISTRATION

Our Agency was statutorily created by Chapter 20, Florida Statutes as the chief health policy and planning entity for the state. We are primarily responsible for the state’s estimated $25.2 billion Medicaid program that will serve a projected 4.27 million Floridians in SFY 2016-17, the licensure of the state’s 48,500 health care facilities and the sharing of health care data through the Florida Center for Health Information and Policy Analysis. This year we are working to continue to reduce the number of uninsured across the state, to enhance our ability to target fraudulent providers, to reduce unnecessary regulation, and to reduce administrative costs in order to ensure that dollars go to serve patients and more. This site gives you access to

pull up records on every senior living community and home health agency. It is crucial to investigate if whatever service you are looking for has had citations, if the citations have been remedied etc. This is the only site that can provide you this information in a completely unbiased format. https://www.floridahealthfinder.gov/ (888) 419-3456
