Inside our guide, you will discover many types of valuable information, including senior resources and living options, along with home health and hospice care. We hope you will find everything you need and more here in our easy-to-read book. Please take a little time to familiarize yourself with the layout. The grid format allows you to quickly and efficiently review and compare specific amenities and services to find your best match. In addition, our community partners have prepared several interesting articles on a variety of topics to educate you and help you plan. You will find these articles located throughout the book.

We also encourage you to visit our website. SOUTH BALDWIN REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER HONORED AS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO WORK FOR SIX YEARS IN A ROW! Patient results may vary. Consult your physician about the benefits and risks of any surgical procedure or treatment. Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) met overall quality measures for patient safety and outcomes, developed with input from the medical community. A Local Blue Plan may require additional criteria for facilities located in its own service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also met cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare. Each facility’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Facilities in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; and their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluation(s) must meet BDC+ national criteria. National criteria for BDC and BDC+ are displayed on www.bcbs.com. Individual outcomes may vary. For details on a provider’s innetwork status or your own policy’s coverage, contact your Local Blue Plan and ask your provider before making an appointment. Neither Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association nor any Blue Plans are responsible for non-covered charges or other losses or damages resulting from Blue Distinction or other provider finder information or care received from Blue Distinction or other providers.

Dementia Friendly Communities Have Come to Alabama Beginning in the Montgomery area, Alabama’s gulf coast became an active participant in 2017 As part of the with a Dementia Friendly Mobile and a Faith Comnational Dementia munities Initiative. The driving force behind the Friendly America Mobile project is Beth Reinert, a caregiver who lost both her beloved mother and aunt to Alzheimer’ movement, the State disease. Reinert partnered with the Area Agency has come on board on Aging and received a small with Dementia seed grant to take her passion to Friendly Alabama. her church and other local faith communities, training them on how to better support persons in their church family with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Julie McGee The Dementia Friendly America Initiative is a multi-secArea Agency on tor, national collaborative on a mission to foster commuAging Director nities that are equipped to support people with dementia and their care partners by working to become dementia friendly, where they are welcomed and understood. There are many ways a community can collaborate and begin dementia friendly initiatives, the faith community being one of many avenues to approach. Dementia Friendly is a ministry that can be easily embraced by faith communities. Dementia Friendly churches encourage people with dementia and their loved ones, recognizing their positive value to the congregation. A connection with a local church can make all the difference to these people. By showing understanding, offering support, and making small changes, churches can enable someone with dementia to continue attending services or take part in church life in meaningful ways. There are three keys to developing a Dementia Friendly mindset at church, which are 1) building awareness, 2) developing acceptance; and 3) taking actions that allow persons with dementia to participate in church life and provide support to their care partners. Reinert is taking one of these actions steps by planning a memory café and related outings where persons with dementia and their family and friends are welcomed to go and socialize in a welcoming setting such as an ice cream social or coffee shop. Project manager, Beth Reinert, is leading the way for the Mobile area to become dementia friendly. Available through funding provided by Dementia Friendly Alabama and in partnership with the Area Agency on Aging and Dementia Friendly America, dementia friendly principles will be offered to the faith communities in South Alabama.

U

ltimately, the goal is to create a culture where those living with dementia and their care partners feel respected, supported and included in everyday community life. Every part of the community has a role to play.

DEMENTIA FRIENDY ALABAMA

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ALABAMA COMES TO SOUTH ALABAMA

Ms. Reinert says, “Caregivers and people with dementia tend to become isolated in their homes, and withdraw from their usual activities due to the disease progression, the stigma associated with dementia, and embarrassment due to the lack of understanding from the general public, previous social interactions, friends, and family.” She understands this first hand as she cared for several family members who had Alzheimer’s disease. According to Dementia Friendly America, “Dementia friendly faith communities can provide an important spiritual respite. As welcoming, compassionate environments, they offer families with dementia opportunities for meaningful engagement and spiritual connection. Through dementia friendly practices, entire faith communities can embrace and uplift people with dementia and their care partners.” (Reproduced from ACT on Alzheimer’s® developed tools and resources). Ms. Reinert is targeting the faith communities but hopes to move into other sectors in the future. Anyone interested in having her visit a faith community to prepare the staff to recognize the signs of dementia, learn to use dementia friendly communication skills, become sensitive to caregiver stress and provide support is encouraged to contact her. More information may be found at the Dementia Friendly Mobile Facebook page. Editor’s Note: Beth Reinert, who is the founder of Caregiversunite.org, submitted this article. Behavior Concerns with Alzheimer’s Disease When a person is living with Alzheimer’s or another related dementia, as the disease progresses the person may experience changes in their behavior, that may cause concern for their family members, and/or their care givers. Understanding that there is actual damage to the brain in many areas is the first step in coping with the behavioral issues. In certain brain diseases, the brain connections are being loss, and the cells are dying.

B

ehavioral concerns can vary from a lack of inhibitions, (such as cursing, or doing something that is socially unacceptable), to as severe as becoming physically aggressive. Behaviors do not just simply happen, they are usually considered to be a form of communication as well as a reaction to something that is real or ‘perceived’ as real. Trying to decipher the meaning is the real challenge. Numerous triggers can be the cause of the behavioral concern. Triggers can be categorized into five types, other than the brain

deterioration itself. “Fear” is one of the most powerful emotional triggers. Emotional triggers may also include: frustration, sadness, loneliness, angry… “Noise” is the most common environmental trigger as well as: overstimulation, cluttered space, too crowded, too much unstructured time, too hot or too cold. “Pain” is one of the most powerful physical triggers. Other Physical triggers may include but are not limited to urinary tract infections, constipation, dehydration sleep disturbances… “Tasks” can be a task trigger, tasks that can be too confusing; or tasks with too many steps. 95% of the time

In handling behavioral concerns, first one needs to understand that the behavior cannot be modified or changed, but we must change ourselves and our approaches to impact the behavior. One of the first effective and successful interventions is actually difficult for most people, that is to “ACT” and “Not to React” to the behavioral concern. When reacting to behavioral concerns it only makes the situation worse. Interventions are variable, and what works one time may not work the next, and not all interventions will be successful for every person, they need to be individualized for the person. In developing successful intervention for any given person with any given behavioral concern, knowing the who, what, when, where, and how of the behavior is vital. Once those questions are answered, a plan can be developed. Some interventions are routine for all persons. A sampling of interventions may include: n

n

Observing for visual, or verbal prompts that a behavioral concern is about to happen, and intervene before it happens; e aware of what your body B language is portraying;

“People” cause behavioral issues. People, who do not approach the person in the correct manor, asking too many questions, trying to reason with the person living with Alzheimer’s or another related dementia, trying to use reality orientation to reason or change the persons way of thinking.

Constantly be building trust; Give up ‘Control’, and the need to be right; Utilize retained abilities’ – Apologize, by saying, “I am sorry”; Be Patient!

In summary, each person with dementia is unique and has distinctive changes that occur with the loss of brain functioning. Every single human has the desire to be respected, in control and loved; just because a person is living with a dementia condition, those desires do not change. The person living with dementia cannot change; therefore, those caring for them must change their approach, and expectations. The person is doing the best that they can, given their losses. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was written by Candy Yingling.

A UNIQUE CEMETERY

Many, if not most, large cemeteries are investor-owned profit oriented commercial endeavors. Regardless of how they are promoted, their ultimate driving force is generating income that can be divided among owners, often times an out of town corporation. Mobile Memorial Gardens is different. It is an independent, not for profit organization that is almost a one of a kind in Alabama. OUR MISSION

Our mission is reflected by our commitment to excellence in all that we do. Our highest priority is the preservation of memories in a dignified, honorable, and comforting place. We believe we are here to maintain a place of beauty and peace that exceeds the expectations of our families and guests.

Alternative Therapy Can Enrich Your Life

T

oday, people coping with a serious mental health disorder have the desire to find ways to create a better life for themselves and their families. Although traditional medical and therapeutic methods have improved over the decades, they do not oft times eliminate or lessen symptoms of mental illness. A variety of alternative therapies are shifting our approach to mental wellness and enhance standard psychological treatment, depending upon the person’s needs. These non-traditional treatments

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is the main government agency for investigating non-traditional treatments for mental illness and other conditions. What is complementary and alternative therapy? “Complementary health approaches,” the term favored by National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCAM), encompasses three areas of unconventional treatment: 1) Natural Products; 2) Mind and Body Treatments; 3) Mental Therapies. his will help to ensure that you receive the medical attention you need during that first “GOLDEN HOUR” after a crash or other emergency involving your vehicle. To participate in the YELLOW Dot Program, the four items needed are a
photo, a completed personal information form, a YELLOW DOT decal, and a YELLOW DOT folder. First, a photograph is taken of the participant. The photo is later taped to the front side of the completed information sheet. The next step is to complete the form which contains the participant’s information; name, address and phone number of person to contact in case of an emergency; medical history; allergies; medications and dosage taken; and names 36 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2018-2019

A YELLOW DOT in the rear window of your vehicle will alert all first responders to the vital information in your glove compartment. of doctors caring for the participant. A YELLOW DOT is placed in the lower left corner of the rear windshield of the participant’s automobile or the lower left corner of a motorcycle’s license plate to alert First Responders that vital information can be found in the vehicle or on the cycle. The final step is to place the completed information sheet, with picture attached, into the YELLOW DOT folder and then place the folder into the glove box of autos or storage compartment of motorcycles where first responders are trained to look when they see a YELLOW DOT on the auto or motorcycle. That’s all there is to it! If you need more information, please call the Mobile County Sheriff’s Department at 251.574.6397 or the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department at 251.972.6813. ~

H•H OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, STUDIES HAVE ESTABLISHED a relationship between untreated hearing loss and dementia in older adults. New medical research* has found that hearing loss actually contributes to dementia and mental decline. It’s estimated that as much as 36 percent of dementia risk can be attributed to hearing loss, and hearing loss is linked to 30-40 percent greater risk of cognitive decline in people with hearing loss versus those without. Furthermore, in 2011, another study on dementia found that “the worse the initial hearing loss was, the more likely the person was to develop dementia. Compared with people of normal hearing, those with moderate hearing loss had triple the risk.” The good news? Hearing aids can help! Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center found a direct correlation between improved cognitive function and hearing aid use in older adults with hearing loss. “Our study suggests that using a hearing aid may offer a simple, yet important, way to prevent or slow the development of dementia by keeping adults with hearing loss engaged in conversation and communication,” suggests Dr. Anil K. Lalwani, M.D., professor at CUMC. The survey confirms what hearing healthcare providers have known for decades — that correcting hearing loss with hearing aids provides benefits in addition to improved hearing, such as improved quality of life, improved relationships at home and work, feelings of safety and independence, and improved mental health. If you’ve been thinking about investing in better hearing, you might be excited to learn that when you do, you’ll be getting a long list of non-auditory benefits in addition to better hearing. You’ll actually be getting more benefit for your buck! Continued on page 44

MEDICARE 2019 “IN A NUTSHELL”

M•M

COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND SERVICES

Medicare 2019 “In A Nutshell” (Parts A, B & Medigap Plans) Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.” Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part B Medical Insurance

Supplemental Policy Plans A - N Medigap

Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)

Most people pay monthly $134.00 (Premium could be higher based on income)

Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.

$1,340 deductible (per benefit period) It is possible to pay the $1,340 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care. Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more. Providers are paid by Medicare assignment. No coverage outside USA. No out-of-pocket maximum. Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

$183 annual deductible. 80/20 after deductible. Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, preventive services and other Medicare approved benefits. Most doctors accept Medicare patients. No coverage outside the USA. No out-of-pocket maximum. Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

These plans generally pay the Part A & B deductibles, the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits. When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered A popular option, Plan F will NOT be available for new enrollees in 2020 Can provide benefits outside USA Plans are only available through insurance companies. Need to add a Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties. Must have Part A & B to enroll.

For more information visit www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE. There is no additional cost to use the services of a full time insurance professional. Please call us or a broker in your local area for additional assistance. This article was written by Craig N. Anderson, President of Anderson Benefits, Inc. located in Salt Lake City, Utah. 62 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2018-2019

In this corner – HOPE! Sometimes life can throw a pretty mean sucker punch, which is exactly how Gary Ellis, a successful, local businessman, felt when he was told he had Parkinson’s Disease. He was stunned and afraid, but immediately set out to find a way to fight this incurable disease. After seeing a feature story on 60 Minutes about Rock Steady Boxing, Gary was inspired. He learned that Rock Steady Boxing, a non-contact, boxing-inspired program, can delay, reduce and even reverse the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. You see, Parkinson’s Disease causes a loss in many of the same elements that boxers condition to improve, such as optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, balance, hand-eye coordination, footwork and overall strength. At Rock Steady Boxing, the opponent is Parkinson’s Disease. Gary knew this was something he wanted to do. Unfortunately, the nearest class was in Birmingham, AL, but that didn’t stop Gary. He searched to find just the right person to undergo training and facilitate the Rock Steady Boxing program in this area. Chris Wheeles, owner of Wheeles Karate Academy, would prove to be that person. Committed to helping fight this disease, Chris received intense training and was ready to make a real difference in our community. Classes began in Gulf Shores in August 2017. Today, you can find an average of 20-25 boxers in each class fighting their way to a healthier and happier life. For Gary, Rock Steady Boxing is nothing short of a miracle. Those once referred to as “patients” are now call “boxers” – proudly fighting the same fight. With the help of Rock Steady Boxing, it’s Parkinson’s Disease that’s taking the hit!

and wellness and relieve physical and emotional stress or pain. It can also reduce depression and insomnia and improve sleep quality for seniors. Music Therapy: Therapists use music interventions ie. listening to music, making music, writing lyrics) to help patients alleviate pain, improve memory and promote overall mental and physical wellness. Music can lower anxiety and increased pain threshold through listening to soft musical tunes. Do your research and make an informed decision before you consider what alternative therapy is best for you.

Remember: “The concept of total wellness recognizes that our every thought, word, and behavior affects our greater health and well-being. And we, in turn, are affected not only emotionally but also physically and spiritually.” – Greg Anderson, founder of American Wellness Project and author. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Sher Graham, Executive Vice President of The Synergy Solutions Group and Chair of the South Alabama Mental Wellness Coalition. n so many ways social workers help people help themselves. Social workers provide services to and for people of every age and every background, working with individuals, couples, families and communities. Social workers are uniquely qualified to help people right in their own environment, considering all the different aspects of a person’s life and culture. We work to ensure your personal well-being, prevent crises and to help you be a healthier, happier you. Social workers ensure people receive the help they need, from the best resources available. And for more than 100 years, we’ve been doing just that.

What Can Social Workers Do for You?

There are more than 600,000 professional social workers in the United States who have committed their lives to making a difference. They’ve all earned bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral social work degrees, and have completed a required number of hours in supervised fieldwork. Social workers take pride in being the only professionals trained to work with people in their environment, looking at all dimensions of the individual’s life. Our training comes from a nationwide system of accredited education programs, and is reinforced with practice standards, credentials, and state licensing regulations. Social workers care for people in every stage of life, from children to the elderly. We help them overcome life’s most difficult challenges, and the troubles of everyday living, including poverty, stress, addiction, abuse, depression, physical illness, divorce, disability, mental illness, death and so many other challenges. Wherever and whenever you need help, social workers are there. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was written by Dr. Amy Sagen, LSW, MSG NASW-PA, Chief Operating Officer.

HOSPICE CARE

Hospice Care Definitions continued from page 92 PAIN PUMPS AVAILABLE – Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications. Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency. PALLIATIVE CARE – Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment. PCP-OVERSIGHT – Can the hospice patient retain their own primary care physician in addition to the hospice medical director? All hospice organizations require a medical director, a physician to oversee their care. Many times the

hospice medical director will work in conjunction with the patient’s own physician. The patient, family and hospice team can determine which physicians will oversee the care and certify the hospice eligibility criteria. PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a four-legged creature to brighten the day of a terminally ill patient. Pet therapy teams visit with patients wherever they reside – at home or in professional care settings. Studies have shown many benefits of pet companionship, ranging from reduced blood pressure and anxiety to relief from boredom, pain and loneliness. This service is not reimbursed by Medicare. VA CONTRACT – If the patient is not a Medicare Recipient and is covered by the VA, the VA will make payments directly to their contracted agencies. If a patient is a Veteran, but is a Medicare Recipient, they may choose any Medicare approved hospice agency for their care. ~

magine shopping at a store with non-skid floors, shelving that is neither too high or low, easy-to-read signage, and emergency call buttons located throughout. Imagine shopping carts with built-in seats and attached magnifiers or even stores with chairs set around the perimeter for quick breaks. Imagine going to an event where transportation to and from is accessible and free or low-cost, parking is reasonably close, and seating is plentiful. Imagine sidewalks and parking lots surrounding the event are free of snow, ice, wet leaves, puddles, broken cement, and clutter. Imagine the timing and location of the event are suitable to anyone attending. And who wouldn’t want alternatives to long lines? These are examples of age-inclusive thinking. Age-inclusive thinking means we consider the shared needs of everyone because we all have different needs as we transition between the many stages of life. It means leaders, planners, business owners, and elected officials care about the wants and perspectives of older adults, as much as 98 ALABAMA GULF COAST – FALL 2018-2019

they care about people of other ages. Understanding what age-inclusive thinking means and then

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

Older adults are living longer and want to be engaged in the community. Without the physical and organizational structures necessary to help them age well in their homes and communities, the quality of life—for people of all ages— will be compromised. That’s why older adults (and their caregivers) play an important role in ensuring communities apply age-inclusive thinking. Only they know what it’s like to go about their daily routines and can speak to what is needed for their community to best support them as they age. Wouldn’t it be nice to no longer have to imagine the examples of age-inclusive thinking listed above and instead experience them because they’re automatically happening in the community? It begins with a conversation; with older adults speaking up and letting their wants and perspectives be known and heard. What ideas do you have for ensuring the places and happenings in your community are accessible and inclusive to people of all abilities and mobility? No matter how big or small of an idea you might have, I encourage you to reach out to your community’s planners, elected officials, business and organization leaders, aging service providers, and media and let your voices resound. ~

applying it creates a community that is a safe, welcoming, appropriate, and adaptable place to age. Why is this important? By the year 2030, the number of older adults from the Baby Boomer generation will have doubled since the year 2000; a change like nothing the world has ever seen that will touch every aspect of society.

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES

What Does Assisted Living Cost One of the first questions families ask about assisted living is ‘how much does it cost?’

M

any people are surprised at how affordable it is when given specific information about what’s included, such as; utilities, food, cooking, cleaning, entertainment, transportation and 24/7 nursing care. What does Assisted Living cost? Communities charge anywhere from $2,000 a month to as much as $6,500, but the average is about $3,500. This amount largely depends on 3 factors.

1

How much care does the resident require? For individuals that need help with a lot of activities of daily living (ADL’s), the cost can be more. This is important to keep in mind and understand that the cost may increase over time as care needs increase.

Life is better with friends.

Location. As with any real estate, location affects the cost.

3

Size of the room. Most communities have different size rooms from small studio apartments to 2 bedroom suites. Most individuals are completely comfortable in a studio or 1 bedroom. In addition to the monthly cost for Assisted Living, most communities charge a “move-in” or “community” fee for new residents. Make sure you understand all the costs associated with moving before you sign the agreement and move in. There are

SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES

About Noland Health Services n 1913, Dr. Lloyd Noland came to Jefferson County Alabama at the invitation of the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Land Company (TCI) to address the public health needs of workers who suffered from smallpox, typhoid, and other epidemic diseases. Soon after arriving in Birmingham, Dr. Noland realized the community’s need and presented his vision to meet those needs. The result was a company hospital which ultimately went on to become the centerpiece of a community health network of services. Growing from the progressive system founded by Dr. Noland, Noland Health Services today follows his legacy of community service. A private, not-for-profit healthcare organization, Noland is one of the largest providers of multi-level senior communities in the state. Senior living options include garden homes, independent living apartments, assisted living, residential and day memory care, short term rehabilitation and long term skilled nursing care. Noland communities are strategically located and have expanded to locations in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Allen Health and Rehabilitations in Mobile, Eastern Shore Rehabilitation and Health Center in Daphne and Fairhope Health and Rehabilitation in Fairhope all offer post-acute rehabilitation services as well as residential long term skilled nursing services. Having several facilities throughout the coastal Alabama region allows Noland Health Services to meet the needs of the community. Noland Health Services also has numerous facilities offering all levels of care in the greater Birmingham area. Noland Health Services also specializes in long term hospitals for patients that require extended care die to chronic diseases or complex medical conditions. These hospitals are innovative regional referral hospitals dedicated to meeting the complex treatment and clinical education needs of patients and families who require extended or specialty focused stays in a hospital setting. Noland Health Services is proud to have celebrated over 100 years of providing health services to the citizens of Alabama. For more information contact www.nolandhealth.com. ~
