Ombudsman came from a man who stated he was being denied dessert by staff at meal times.

When I asked the facility about this they responded that he is diabetic and should not have sweets by order of a physician and request of the family. The complainant pointed out he was a veteran and stated very clearly that he had earned the right to eat chocolate cake after fighting in the South Pacific during WWII. He explained to me that he agreed his health was not the best and this was true, but that he understood the consequence and would still like to have dessert. He added that he needs a wheelchair and can’t see well so he depends on others to help him. He stated that in all his years he had never shared a room with another person other than his wife and had just moved into a room with a stranger. He had to sell his home and many of his possessions after his wife died. He now needed somebody to help him in most aspects of his daily life who were also strangers. Having dessert was one thing that was familiar and provided some distraction as to how much his

life had changed recently. He asked me what should he live for if he is denied chocolate cake? This was about his independence and restoring something to his life that gave him pleasure when he felt so much had already been taken. This was not about a sweet tooth as I first suspected. This complaint was about the dignity that is provided by allowing people to assume risk and make their own choices. Even when those choices would not be the choices we would make for ourselves. This was about a man wanting some normalcy and control of his own life when he felt he had none. This was about how rights are altered for concerns of safety without consideration of harm to a person’s spirit. I learned there is dignity in allowing risk and that what may seem trivial may have much deeper meaning to another person.

What Exactly Is A “Care Cost Advisor” Traveling the caregiver road alone is And Why Should I never easy. Maybe it’s time for help. Work With One? When families faces health care issues and realize they need help for at-home or community based care, one of the first concerns is the financial burden to be faced. Because costs can be high, families may seek the lowest cost care plan to provide the longest possible time frame available. This type of plan may include tag-team coverage from family members who are trying to help mom or dad while working a job and trying to keep their own family happy. This family may contact a home care provider or visit an assisted living community to see what’s available or affordable. When they find the right level of care or assistance, the concerns frequently settle on “How can we afford this?” Discovery process The family may feel like they have nowhere to turn. But they do. Care Cost Advisors are expert in navigating the web of public benefits and personal options for care. Because the problem appears to be financial, the first step is to inventory the available assets. This may include investments, insurance policies, home equity or long term care coverage. Next, health issues are reviewed to understand where assistance will be needed and at what cost. Then the process will discover what Veteran’s benefits or public programs may be available to assist with care costs.

18 COLORADO SPRINGS - NOVEMBER 2016-2017

Care Service Solutions Next, the Care Cost Advisor will lay out a plan to optimize current assets and qualify for additional benefits, if available. This may include changes to current IRA accounts, insurance and investments or the need for estate planning changes. Required services may include an attorney or tax professional or a care service locator. The Care Cost Advisor has identified those providers who understand the planning and provide the family consistent understanding of their needs and charge fees that are reasonable. Implementing the Plan As the proposal is put in place the Care Cost Advisor serves as the point of contact throughout the process. Rather than have advisors who may not understand the “Big Picture”, the team of service providers are all moving to the family’s goal of getting the most care for a reasonable cost. This requires a talented team leader who understands insurance, financial, tax issues, and national care benefits including VA, Medicaid and estate planning concerns; the Care Cost Advisor. Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Chuck Shaw, Care Cost Advisor, VA Accredited Agent & financial advisor. He may be reached at 719-638-1319 or capitalwealth@ymail.com. See ad page 19.

Consider Dental Plans for Savings Everyone Wants To Sell You Dental Insurance; But A Dental Plan Is Better

who will perform all dental procedures at 20-60% savings. And you do get a tax deduction for your dental care costs.

Dental care is the largest out-ofpocket medical expense for many retirees. To save a diseased molar can mean a root canal ($900) and a crown ($1100); totaling $2,000. Only 30% of seniors have any type of dental coverage. But is it worth it to buy dental coverage? Probably not; instead consider a good discount dental plan. A single senior (age 65 or older) cost for a discount dental plan can be as low as $8.95 per month ($107.40 per year). Members of a discount dental plan are given special reduced fees from a network of excellent dentists

Dental insurance has a low annual limit on benefits-- typically $1200. AARP’s basic plan costs $478 per year, which gives you a maximum of $1000 for dental work. Or they have a plan with a $1350 maximum for $664 per year. This is typical of most stand alone dental insurance coverage. Though you usually have twice a year cleanings and exams that do not count against the maximum, are they really “free” when you are paying those types of premiums?

Mini Implants: The Easiest Way to Stabilize a Lower People are living longer and healthier lives and it is not uncommon Denture for people to reach 85, 90, or even older ages.

Many however, loose their teeth over time due to decay or gum disease and end up with partial or full dentures. The dentures become loose, gum tissue becomes sore, and eating becomes very difficult. Seniors love to stay social, eat good, and share great times with family and friends without the embarrass-

ment and difficulties that come with denture use. The quality of life is especially important at this stage and we need to do everything we can to improve it. Dental Implants dramatically improve life quality for many older individuals by letting them eat better, get better nutrition, stay more social, and lead active and vital lives. Dental Mini Implants allow patients to eat any food they want comfortable and get the necessary nutrition. Mini Implants effectively support the overlying dentures and help prevent movement and

Planning for Disability and You know that you’ll die someday, Long Term Care and hopefully you have a good estate plan in place for that. But have you planned for incapacity?

We all know people who’ve had an unexpected stroke, brain injury, or even dementia and if that happens to us without a good plan in place, the hassles for our family can be overwhelming. Financial Affairs Either a financial Power of Attorney or a Revocable Living Trust is needed to allow someone to manage your affairs if you’re incapacitated. Talk to an attorney who really knows estate planning to find out what’s right for you, so your family doesn’t have to involve the court in the middle of a difficult time. Medical Decisions There are several documents you need to ensure someone can carry out your medical wishes. These include a Medical Durable Power of Attorney, Living Will, and Universal HIPAA Release. Payment for Long-Term Care Although you’ve worked hard your entire life, you may end up with nothing if you need care. Almost 70% of Americans turning 65 will

32 COLORADO SPRINGS - NOVEMBER 2016-2017

need long-term health care, and the biggest concern for many of them is how to pay for it. – Out of Pocket With the monthly cost for care in a nursing home averaging over $7,500 per month, the majority of your life’s savings may be eaten up quickly. – Insurance Long-term care insurance can pay your nursing home expenses, but you need to get it while you’re still healthy. – Medicaid Medicaid can pay most of your longterm care costs if you meet certain income and asset requirements including no more than $2000. The rules are complex, particularly if you’re married. By working with a good Elder Law attorney you may be able to save some of your hard-earned money even if you end up in a nursing home. For help with planning for disability, including qualification for Medicaid, call our office at 719-520-1474 or visit our website at ColoradoEstatePlan.com. “Is Your Estate Plan “All Set”?” Do you have a Will or a Trust? Power of Attorney? Healthcare Power of Attorney? Living Will? If so, great. Here is a really important question: when was the last time you reviewed and updated your estate planning documents? For a significant portion of the population, the answer is unfortunately “I can’t recall.” My favorite story about “old” estate planning documents involves a neat couple in their 80’s from southeastern Colorado. At our first meeting I asked the husband, “Sir, do you have a Will?” He answered, “Yes sir, I do.” I followed up, “May I see it?” He responded by sliding a one-page document across the table. I reviewed the document. It was a Will signed in 1961. I asked the man if anything had changed. He replied, “I reckon so.” During the course of our meeting I learned that the 1961 Will was signed when the man and his wife were a young couple just starting out. At the time, the had one young son; when we met, they had three more children – two daughters and another son. In 1961, by their own assessment, they were poor public servants; when we met, they were successful ranchers with significant savings. Many things had changed – but their estate plan had not kept up with the changes in their lives. Unfortunately, this is par for the course. Many people put off getting their planning done. Of those who

34 COLORADO SPRINGS - NOVEMBER 2016-2017

do their planning, most fail to keep their plans current. They treat estate planning as a “check the box” exercise – much like the man with the 1961 Will. A non-current plan is arguably better that no plan at all but probably not by much. An out of date plan can actually be worse than not having a plan. The best way to ensure that your plan is up to date is to regularly review it to ensure it remains consistent with your objectives. Change is the only constant in life. People change – there are births, deaths, marriages and divorces. Finances change. Health changes. Relationships change. It is imperative to ensure that, as change happens, your estate plan remains consistent with your objectives. Pull out your estate planning documents and read them. When you notice things that are out of date or otherwise are no longer accurate, go see an attorney. Update your documents. Get the peace of mind that comes from knowing you are “All Set!” Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Kevin Forbush J.D., CPA., one of the principal attorneys at Forbush Goldberg PLLC. Long Term Care Planning “A little bit of planning goes and Assistance a long way.” We’ve heard that quote our entire lives, and in the area of Long Term Care, a little bit of planning…. Even in a crisis goes a long way. It is estimated that over 40% of people over 65 will need some type of Long Term Care (LTC). Terms like Medicare, Medicaid, long term care insurance, trusts, life estates, transfers, gifts, annuities, and other strategies come to mind but having a qualified professional who can navigate a pathway to assistance based on your family’s situation is critical. It’s confusing, and to make matters worse, most of us don’t address long term care issues until it is fully upon us either as a caregiver for a parent, or a caregiver of a spouse. Colorado has many resources for help. One such resource for financial help is Health First Colorado. This is Colorado’s Medicaid Program. Most Colorado elderly feel that they don’t qualify for Medicaid because they have too much income or too many assets. In reality, many could qualify if they would engage a qualified Medicaid Planner, holding a Certified Medicaid Planner (CMP) designation. The role of a CMP is

48 COLORADO SPRINGS - NOVEMBER 2016-2017

to help an applicant identify problems in obtaining eligibility and solve them. The goal of the CMP is to build certainty around how assistance with paying for LTC. This valuable planning can alleviate the stress of financial uncertainty. The rules around Medicaid eligibility are readily available on line. However, it is the proper application of the guidelines that is difficult causing most to think they don’t qualify and therefore, overlook this valuable resource to assist in the costs of LTC. Planning will identify a legitimate means of preserving valuable or sentimental assets and income. Here in Colorado, to the surprise of many, Medicaid guidelines afford numerous opportunities to protect income and assets. Consulting with a CMP who specializes in LTC will help you and your family develop a successful pathway to LTC financial assistance.

What is Medicaid Planning? I am often asked “what is Medicaid Planning?” Let’s break that down. Medicaid is a government program that unlike Medicare will pay for long term care costs in a nursing home, however, it has strict financial limits. Medicaid planning is simply the process of acquiring Medicaid eligibility while preserving as many of your assets as possible. I’d like to take this opportunity to answer a few of the most common questions that I get: How much money do I need to have to make Medicaid planning worth it? – Any assets above the Medicaid limit (currently $2,000 for a single applicant and $119,220 for the applicant’s spouse) are an opportunity for planning. I’ve heard there is a five year look back but we don’t have that long before we need Medicaid, is there anything we can do? – Yes, even within the five year look back you have planning options. For instance, you could purchase non-countable asset or buy a Medicaid compliant annuity. I talked to Medicaid and they didn’t offer me any of the planning ideas that you have given me, is this even legal?

52 COLORADO SPRINGS - NOVEMBER 2016-2017

– Talking to Medicaid about planning opportunities is like discussing tax deductions with the IRS; they won’t deny you a legitimate one, but they certainly aren’t there to help you find one. And yes, Medicaid planning is perfectly legal, just like tax planning is perfectly legal. Do I need to sell my house to get on Medicaid?/Will Medicaid take my house? – No to both; at least while you are alive. Since your home is not a countable asset, it will not prevent you from receiving Medicaid. After you pass away though, Medicaid can put a lien on your home in the amount of the services they have provided you. The good news is that if the lien exceeds the value of your home, Medicaid will only take your home and your children will not owe the difference. As a final note, remember that no two situations are exactly the same and you should base your Medicaid decisions on a professional’s guidance and not what happened to your grandmother’s best friend’s cousin. Rehabilitation Hospitals, sometimes referred to as Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals, provide intensive rehab to patients who are generally medically stable but need help to recover from injury or other medical conditions. They can be found within a hospital or in a free-standing building. Rehabilitation hospitals were created to provide services less costly on a per diem basis than general hospitals but provide a high level of professional therapies such as physical, occupational and speech therapies. Rehabilitation Hospitals must offer a minimum number of physician visits, increased daily rehab hours (3 hours/day, 5 days/week of PT, OT, and/ or Speech), and interdisciplinary services including increased RN oversight and nursing hours per day. Socialization for Seniors Improves If you had an opportunity to visit Quality of Life with your friends, have lunch together and maybe even travel together, why wouldn’t you?

Perhaps find an opportunity to learn something new or see a site that you might not go to on your own? Maybe you recently moved to the area, lost your spouse/partner or are recently retired? We, as humans, are designed for interaction and socialization with others, even if we are introverts. In addition, as we age, we have an ability to learn new things. So, while it is true that “old brains can learn new things”, where can these opportunities be found? Support from others can also be important in reducing stress, increasing physical health and defeating psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. In addition, says John Feather, PhD, “What we know is that lonely hearts are hearts at risk, because social isolation is a killer. Specifically, social isolation is associated with, and a powerful predictor of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, institutionalization, stroke, re-hospitalization, depression, and increased risk of suicide, just to name a few. It is linked to everything from a higher risk of contracting the common cold to faster tumor growth in cancer patients. All in all, socially isolated people are twice as likely to die prematurely (even controlling for other relevant factors) than are people with many strong social relationships.”

66 COLORADO SPRINGS - NOVEMBER 2016-2017

When we think of Seniors Centers, sometimes we don’t realize the impact they can have on a seniors’ life. Providing an opportunity for socialization, and new learning, has been found to increase our overall self-awareness and in turn, increase our well-being. In fact, studies show that lack of social support is related to negative impacts on health and well-being. So, what can you find at your local Senior Center? You may find opportunities to socialize, including meals, socials, concerts, day trips and classes. Perhaps you had to lay down that paint brush as your career or family took over your life? You can find these opportunities at Senior Centers near you. Have you wanted to learn more about that computer or want to email friends or family members? You can find those types of classes too. Senior Centers and Active Adult programs are focused on the well-being of adults, age 55+, so there are always opportunities to do and learn more. Look for a Senior Center or Active Adult program near you today to get engaged and increase your quality of life! COLORADO SPRINGS ORTHOPAEDIC GROUP – NUVASIVE

THE XLIF® PROCEDURE: TURNING SPINE SURGERY ON ITS SIDE BY PAUL STANTON, D.O.

In most traditional spine surgeries, surgeons approach the spine from the patient’s front or back. These approaches are necessary in many cases, but they can also be very disruptive to muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. This surgical disruption can cause many complications and require a long recovery period. That’s why, when a patient with chronic back or leg pain is a good candidate for it, I usually recommend the minimally invasive eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF) procedure. How does XLIF benefit patients? With the innovative XLIF technique, I approach the spine from the side of the patient’s body, rather than the front or back, thus avoiding most muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. Every individual is different, of course, but most of my XLIF patients experience a shorter operative time, less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and fewer complications than traditional spine surgery patients. Many XLIF patients are up and walking the same day as the surgery and return home the next day.

“Most of my XLIF patients experience a shorter operative time, less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and fewer complications than traditional spine surgery patients.”

How does XLIF work? First, I make a small incision on the patient’s side. Then I use dilators to direct my path to the affected disc in the spine, while monitoring the local nerves. Once the safest path has been determined, I use a retractor to provide access and visibility to the affected area. Next, I remove the diseased or damaged disc to reduce pressure on the patient’s spinal cord or nerves (that’s what causes the patient’s back or leg pain). Then, still working from the side, I place an implant into the empty disc space to restore proper disc height and provide support while bone grows between the two vertebrae during the fusion (bone healing) process. Sometimes, I also affix a combination of screws and plates to the adjacent vertebrae, to help hold everything in place while fusion occurs. Once the vertebrae have naturally fused together, the spine is stabilized. Is XILF right for you? The XLIF procedure might be a good option for you if you require an intervertebral fusion at any lumbar level between vertebrae L1 and L5, if you do not require direct nerve decompression through the same approach, and you would benefit from a less disruptive approach. Not everyone may be a good candidate for the XLIF procedure. As with any surgery, each patient should be treated individually, and a discussion of suitability should take place between patient and physician.

COLORADO SPRINGS ORTHOPAEDIC GROUP – NUVASIVE

Patients with chronic back or leg pain typically spend years trying to find something – anything! – that will ease the pain. Many of my patients spend years managing their pain with a number of conservative treatments methods, such as physical therapy and pain medication. Those are sufficient for most patients, but for some, spine surgery is the only permanent solution to the pain. Fortunately, spine surgery has come a long way in the last decade.

Want to learn more? To schedule a consultation, please visit www.csog.net or call me at 719-632-7669. For more information about XLIF and other minimally disruptive spine procedures, visit www.nuvasive.com.

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential benefits and possible risks involved in XLIF surgery. Please consult your physician for a full list of potential complications and to determine if you are a candidate for the XLIF procedure. es and educated consumers.

When preparing for a purchase, whether $100 or $100,000, as an educated consumer you do your research. Trust but verify—take recommendations from credible sources AND look into ratings, complaints, and customer reviews to learn about other’s experiences. Check with local governing and regulatory agencies or watchdogs to ensure the recommended businesses are appropriately licensed and insured. After researching, you can contact the business. Just because it’s online doesn’t mean it’s safe—to ensure you are shopping with a legitimate site check the site’s security settings, its web address should start with “https://” and include a lock icon on the purchase page. Read the site’s privacy policy, the fine print, check for return policies, restocking fees, and cancellation requirements. Resist high-pressure sales—a deal too good to be true or a “good deal” only available on the spot, is usually too good to be true. Shop around, get at least three estimates. Be wary of extremely low estimates that could be upsold later. When you’re ready

to purchase get a written contract. Make sure it specifies the price, the product or service and who will execute it and in what time frame. Require all modifications to the original contract to be in writing and signed by both parties. Keep documentation of your purchase—save a copy of the invoice, contract, confirmation page/email confirmation until you receive the item or the service is complete to your satisfaction. If your product or service comes with a warranty, be sure to keep the documentation until that warranty is void. Be sure to know and understand the return policy and keep this documented with your purchase records. Pay by credit card, if possible; you may have additional protection if there’s a problem. Be an educated consumer. A community built on educated consumers will promote good business practices and a marketplace where buyers and sellers can feel safe and trust each other.

HOSPICE CARE DEFINITIONS

Hospice Care Definitions HOSPICE Hospices provide individuals facing terminal illness with care at home or in a healthcare facility. The goal is to assist patients to live the last stage of their lives with dignity. The focus is on comfort rather than treatment.

GIP – General In-Patient Care – Provided in a skilled nursing facility when the symptoms cannot be managed elsewhere. The skilled nursing facility must have 24-hour R.N. coverage as deemed by Medicare guidelines. General in-patient care is usually short in duration. If an individual is at a care facility, room and board are covered by hospice during this period. CC-CONTINUOUS CARE – Provided to prevent the individual from going to the hospital when a crisis occurs. It also is given when more help is needed to assist the individual and family in coping with the crisis. This level of care is usually provided at the individual’s residence no matter where

If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency.

PALLIATIVE CARE – Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness – whatever the prognosis. HOSPICE CARE

Hospice Care Definitions continued PCP-OVERSIGHT – Can the hospice patient retain their own primary care physician in addition to the hospice medical director? All hospice organizations require a medical director, a physician to oversee their care. Many times the hospice medical director will work in conjunction with the patient’s own physician. The patient, family and hospice team can determine which physicians will oversee the care and certify the hospice eligibility criteria. PET THERAPY – There’s nothing like a visit from a four-legged creature to brighten the day of a terminally ill

patient. Pet therapy teams visit with patients wherever they reside – at home or in professional care settings. Studies have shown many benefits of pet companionship, ranging from reduced blood pressure and anxiety to relief from boredom, pain and loneliness. This service is not reimbursed by Medicare. VA CONTRACT – If the patient is not a Medicare Recipient and is covered by the VA, the VA will make payments directly to their contracted agencies. If a patient is a Veteran, but is a Medicare Recipient, they may choose any Medicare approved hospice agency for their care.

LONG-TERM CARE – Chronic, custodial care provided on an on-going basis MEDICAID WAIVER – An assisted living waiver may be used to transition individuals out of nursing facilities or to provide persons at risk of institutionalization with options for remaining in their communities. Assisted living waivers are designed to provide an alternative to more costly nursing home care. PRICE DEPENDENT ON LEVELS OF CARE – Flexible levels of service geared to accommodate different needs over time. Rates may vary depending on the changing levels of care while one maintains the same physical residence. PUBLIC HOUSING (PH) – Affordable apartments for low-income families, the elderly and persons with disabilities. REHABILITATION AND THERAPY – Many skilled nursing facilities offer restorative and rehabilitative physical and occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology services. Short-term rehabilitation services may be provided to individuals with diagnoses such as joint replacements, stroke, etc. Long-term rehab may also be provided for permanent residents of the facility who have chronic or progressive illnesses. Occupational

therapy services in this setting are generally reimbursed by Medicare Part A for short-term, acute care clients; Medicare Part B for longterm residents who require skilled services and have medically necessary need for rehab; and often by private insurance, Medicaid, or private pay for younger clients. RESIDENTIAL HOME – Assisted living homes are private residential homes that typically have a small number of residents who live together and receive care from live-in care-takers. Adult family homes offer room and board for seniors who want a more private, home-like community. Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing and dressing are provided. Amenities and nursing services vary greatly between homes. Ask about their services when you tour. They are also referred to as personal board and care homes. Most accept private pay; Medicaid in some instances.

That Tough Conversation “Dad, I don’t think it is safe for you to drive anymore.” “Mom, have you considered Assisted Living? You are not eating very well and I noticed you did not take your medications again last night that I left out for you.” “Mom and Dad, the house is falling apart around you. Have you considered bringing in some help with yard work, repairs, and maybe housekeeping?” As an adult child who is helping to care for a parent, you might be facing a tough conversation with a loved one. There are ways to make those discussions easier and most of all, respectful, to those that have loved and cared for you over the years. Starting the conversation can be as easy as “Dad I am concerned about (fill in the blank)” You may find that they have been sharing some of these same concerns. First, be respectful of the aging process. Physical and cognitive changes can be scary, and sometimes hard to acknowledge and accept. Educate yourself on options available, from help at home with household chores, additional medical care or assisted living options.

114 COLORADO SPRINGS - NOVEMBER 2016-2017

Understand that you are possibly asking a loved one give up a portion of their life, whether it is driving, making meals, or even living in their home. You are possibly proposing that they close a chapter of their lives. Secondly, don’t ignore things such as not eating, failing to take medications or a change in how the home is kept. Do try to open up a conversation on what you are observing and share information you learned from educating yourself on options which could help them. Get help or guidance from professionals if appropriate. Lastly, understand that the choice, whatever it might be, is ultimately theirs to make. Asking a parent to accept help with cleaning, with cooking, or even help with bathing can be a big deal to them. Don’t avoid those tough conversations, but handle them with compassion and understanding. Editor’s Note: This article was written by Laura Cooley, CSA. SKILLED NURSING FACILITIES

New Quality 5-Star Currently, every nursing home Measures is continuously being branded with its own overall 5-star rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMC).

This forced ranking system used to be a derivative of three separate analytical sources: health inspections (prior 3 years), staffing and QMs-quality measures (Nursing Home Compare combines 16 QMs, a subset of the 24 QMs listed on Nursing Home Compare) to create a providers QM rating. QMs are derived from clinical data reported by each nursing home and are compared across the country and to every other nursing home by state respectively on Nursing Home Compare (Medicare.gov). This rating system provides the public with profound insights into the quality of care and outcomes to expect from providers. Effective April, 2016 CMS added six new QMs, five are implemented now and the sixth involving antianxiety/hypnotic medication use is being postponed. These metrics are evident on Medicare.gov and consist of: % of short-stay residents who were successfully discharged to the community, % of short-stay residents who have had an outpatient emergency department visit, % of short-stay residents who were re-hospitalized after a nursing home admission, % of short-stay residents who made improvements in

142 COLORADO SPRINGS - NOVEMBER 2016-2017

function, % of long-stay residents whose ability to move independently worsened and the % of long-stay residents who received an antianxiety or hypnotic medication. In summary, understanding the metrics behind the Medicare 5-star rating system can mean the difference between accepting substandard care and receiving the exceptional clinical care and specialty quality services our loved ones deserve. To gain further discernment into this rating system, log on Medicare.gov, Official U.S. Government Site for Medicare, and click on Spotlight in the bottom left or on find nursing homes to reveal details of their measures. Whereas no system could guarantee a consumer with any level of care, it does provide consumers a vivid breakdown of what can be expected and what others experienced. Consumers would be best served to utilize this five star rating tool alongside other sources of information and an in-person visits to better determine which provider to trust and would be most suitable for their health needs. Working to Make Innovations in Aging Collaborative Colorado Springs Launches Age Friendly Colorado Springs Livable for you! Innovations in Aging Collaborative, along with the City of Colorado Springs and AARP Colorado are proud to launch the Age Friendly Colorado Springs initiative! In March of 2016, Colorado Springs joined the AARP Network of Age Friendly Communities, and in June of 2016, officially became part of the World Health Organization Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities. An Age Friendly city is one that is welcoming for people of all ages, that promotes health and wellness, helps sustain economic growth, and helps increase access to key services and resources. The idea of a community that is livable for people of all ages, or “livable communities,” describes an inclusive approach to community organization and design, an approach which intends to create communities, both physical and virtual, in which people of any age or ability can live a healthy and fulfilling life. Livable Communities are places where people have accessible and affordable homes, necessary services like grocery stores and pharmacies located nearby, convenient, affordable and comfortable transportation that takes them to a variety of opportunities for socialization and civic engagement and live in a cultural climate where their contributions and participation is valued throughout the lifespan. Livable Communi-

ties are also walkable, and have a range of outdoor opportunities such as parks and trails that promote health and wellness for everyone, especially those with physical limitations. In a Livable Community, our elders can age in place, continuing their lives within the community that they know and love, pursuing the opportunities and activities that make life worth living. With 100+ recommendations in the Age Friendly Colorado Springs Report and Action Plan, we’re working hard to make Colorado Springs livable for people of all ages. Many of the recommendations from the plan are already in the works! Check out the Age Friendly Business Designation from the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado, or the Old North End Neighborhood iVillage (intergenerational village) for Age Friendly IN ACTION!
