While you may have heard the terms used interchangeably, skilled nursing and senior rehabilitation are not the same things.

The main difference is senior rehabilitation provides short-term in-patient care while skilled nursing offers a higher level of care than Assisted Living.

As you search for the right services for you or a loved one, it is imperative to understand the difference.

Senior Rehabilitation

Senior rehabilitation involves shortterm treatment and time to recuperate after surgery, an accident or an illness, such as a stroke. The goal of rehabilitation is to get the individual back to their highest level of independence.

After leaving rehabilitation, a patient may return home and resume life as normal, receive in-home assistance or seek a permanent resident option, such as a nursing home or senior living center.

Rehabilitation centers are certified and regulated by the state and federal governments. Rehabilitation team members include registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), vocational nurses, speech pathologists, physical therapists, audiologists, medical directors and other specialized staff.

Medicare covers the cost of a stay at a rehabilitation center for 100 days for each benefit period.

Skilled Nursing

Skilled nursing care must be provided by trained RNs and physical,

Skilled nursing services may be needed for short-term rehabilitation or long-term, round-the-clock care for chronic medical conditions, including intravenous therapy, physical therapy, wound care and monitoring of vital signs. Skilled nursing services can be provided at home or in a senior care community.
