Dear Valued Readers, Welcome to the 31st edition of the Seniors Blue Book. With each passing edition the Seniors Blue Book continues to grow in size, accessibility, and information. I want to offer you my heart felt thanks for continuing to turn to and trust the Seniors Blue Book as your primary go to source for anything and everything that is related to seniors, caregivers and their well being. It is our mission to provide you with all possible options and opportunities that are available in an easy to read format. The guide is broken down into three main sections; Community Resources and Services, Home Health Care & Non-Medical Home Care Agencies and Senior Housing. We include definitions of these services and indicate which companies offer these in the appropriate Home Health and Housing Grids. We continue to offer the Solutions for Seniors resource help line at 973-560-0064 for those that need help navigating the information within our publication and website and to offer FREE assistance to those that wish to ask for our information assistance. SeniorsBlueBook.com is our dynamic website that will not only offer all of the information listed in the Seniors Blue Book, but empower the viewer to find local events and activities and post their own events and activities. The community calendars will be interactive and I am expecting avid participation from both seniors and their providers. SeniorsBlueBook.com will also be offering senior professionals their own senior calendar for networking opportunities, promotion of their own events and job opportunities. The community calendars are only a smidgen of the new information that will be available on SeniorsBlueBook.com. Please log on and check it out for yourself. I promise that you will bookmark SeniorsBlueBook.com and come back again and again. Thank you for your continued support and give me a call or an e-mail if you have any suggestions or comments that will further enhance the Seniors Blue Book.
Sincerely,
Seniors Blue Book Please mention the Seniors Blue Book when you call our advertisers.

First you should familiarize yourself with the many options available and determine which one is best for your needs. You will find definitions on each type of housing within the housing section. Then turn to our easy to read comparison grids. The grids are divided into 4 categories, depending on the type of community: Independent Living, Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing. The buildings are listed by county so you can zero in on the specific areas you are looking for.

Three Ways To Help Your Favorite Charity For many of us, supporting our And Yourself favorite charities is an important way of helping others and advancing causes that we believe in.
Did you know that there are also many ways you can personally benefit from such acts of generosity? Most important, of course, is the satisfaction you get when helping a charity that is dear to your heart. But your gifts, when planned smartly, can also help you – even financially. Here are just three examples: Charitable Gift Annuities A charitable gift annuity helps a charity achieve its future goals while providing you (and/or a loved one) with fixed payments for life. The rate of payment is based on your age and never changes. (The older you are, the higher the payment rate). Payments are partially tax-free for a period of years, and a charitable income tax deduction is also available if you itemize your deductions. Gifts of Appreciated Stock or Mutual Funds Gifts of appreciated securities, when held longer than one year, allow you to make a gift at a fraction of its cost. Let’s say you bought XYZ stock a few years ago at $25 a share and it’s now worth $50 a share. If you transfer those shares directly to your favorite charity, your gift is valued at its current value rather than what you paid for it. And, as long as you transfer the gift directly to charity, you avoid
20
paying tax on the capital gain. Gifts of appreciated securities can also be used to fund a charitable gift annuity. IRAs Gifts through your IRA provide yet another opportunity. Possibility 1: if you are age 70 ½ or older, you can direct up to $100,000 a year to charity from your IRA. Although you won’t receive a charitable income tax deduction, neither will such a distribution count as taxable income. (Keep in mind that the distribution must go directly from one’s account to the charity.) Possibility 2: make charity a full, partial, or contingent beneficiary of your IRA upon your death. IRA funds left to loved ones can be heavily taxed, but giving these funds to charity can allow you to direct other assets to loved ones, with potentially favorable tax treatment. The Society of the Little Flower would be happy to provide additional information about these or other ways to help both your favorite charity and yourself. Elizabeth Wesel in our Special Gifts office can be reached at 888-996-1212 or elizabeth.wesel@ littleflower.org. This article is intended to provide general information and is not meant to provide legal, tax, or financial advice; always consult a trusted professional about these or other giving opportunities.

DAILY MONEY MANAGEMENT A Daily Money Manager (DMM) provides personal assistance to seniors who have difficulty managing their financial paperwork.Among other things, a DMM can assist with bill paying, organization of bank, investment statements and tax documents, negotiating with creditors, budget assistance, understanding and reconciling medical insurance claims, Medicaid applications and Medicare choices. A DMM can identify pertinent issues and work with and make referrals to other professionals such as geriatric care manager, lawyer, financial advisor or tax counselor. Many DMMs are Certified Senior Advisors (CSAs) as well as notaries and can help seniors maintain independence by avoiding errors which might raise concern of loved ones.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEMS A Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) is an electronic device designed to let you summon help in an emergency. A PERS has three components: a small radio transmitter (a help button carried or worn by the user); a console connected to the user’s telephone; and an emergency response center that monitors calls. When emergency help (medical, fire, or police) is needed, the PERS user presses the transmitter’s help button. It sends a radio signal to the console. The console automatically dials an emergency response center where the caller is identified. The center will try to determine the nature of the emergency. If the center cannot contact you or determine whether an emergency exists, it will alert emergency service providers to go to your home. Alzheimer’s Association (ad on page 13)

Connecting compassionate, quality care to our communities Bergen New Bridge Medical Center, a clinical affiliate of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, is a 1,070-bed hospital located at 230 East Ridgewood Avenue in Paramus, NJ. The Medical Center is both the largest hospital and licensed nursing home in New Jersey and the fourthlargest publicly-owned hospital in the nation. The hospital changed its name to New Bridge in October 2017 when the not-for-profit company, Care Plus Bergen, took over as the management entity. Care Plus Bergen brings together the expertise of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Integrity House, and Care Plus NJ, Inc., to form a groundbreaking collaboration that will revitalize and strengthen the high-quality, patient-centered care provided to patients, long term care residents, and the community served by the facility. HEALTH AT HOME - HOME HEALTH AGENCIES
The Seven Deadly Sins of In my 42+ years of practicing Estate Planning law, I have found people making the same mistakes over and over. Here are the top seven:
1
Get a financial power of attorney. If you become incompetent and don’t have one, your family faces a long and costly guardianship proceeding. At the same time get a will and advanced directive/medical proxy-living will.
5
Make your gifts outright, don’t attach conditions. They are difficult and expensive to enforce.
6
Forget about joint accounts and payable on death accounts. Use your will instead. You have much more flexibility.
2
Have a lawyer draft these documents. There’s good stuff on the internet, but there’s also garbage. Unfortunately, the average layman doesn’t know the difference.
3
Everyone wants to avoid probate. Most people don’t even know what it is. New Jersey has the simplest procedure in the country. Almost all of my clients do it on their own. Its simple and cheap and can be done within 10 days of death.
4
A child is an adult at 18. To have a large sum of money at that age is scary. So don’t leave minors anything unless it’s in a trust to at least 25, and don’t set up a trust unless you’re going to leave them at
72
least 100k. The trust has to keep its own set of books and file an annual income tax return. The administrative costs could eat up a small trust.
7
Keep your documents in a safe place and make sure your children know where to find them. You don’t want to get dementia and forget. Stay out of trouble. Remember these rules. Any questions, call me (201/4472800) or come in for a free consultation. Editor’s Note: This article was submitted by Michael A. Manna. He is a 1970- Magna Cum Laude graduate of Boston College and a 1973 Cum Laude Graduate of Boston College Law School. His office is located at 66 Maple Ave., Ridgewood and he can be reached at 201-447-2800. ~

Providing health care professionals to an individual in a variety of settings. Most agencies have a registered nurse to do an appraisal to determine a patient’s needs. Some agencies are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Home Care. Agencies offer a different menu of services and accept pay methods including Medicare, Medicaid, Private Insurance, and Private Payment. INDEPENDENT COMMUNITY / RETIREMENT RESOURCES AND COMMUNITIES SERVICES
HOLLAND CHRISTIAN HOME A CHRISTIAN HOME FOR SENIORS
HEARTS TO LOVE AND HANDS TO HELP THAT’S HOW YOU KNOW YOU’RE HOME. Our Life Care program offers residents a full spectrum of care spanning from independent living to skilled nursing. Our proven commitment to quality and safety means our residents are our first priority.

Trying to understand senior living options can feel like learning a new language. It can be a lot to learn! Understanding them, however, can be as simple as it is important. For example, take the term “CCRC.” CCRC stands for “Continuing Care Retirement Community.” The use of the word “care” might be confusing, because many people who live in a CCRC are completely independent. However, if they ever do need personalized care, they can continue living in the same retirement community. That care is already available — hence the name “Continuing Care Retirement Community.” Freedom & Peace of Mind Think of a college. First-year students move onto campus and live in a dorm. They are free to live their lives as they want, with the added benefits of a built-in community and three fresh meals every day! Over time, a student might get sick or need counseling. Older students might need a different living space to accommodate their stage of life. All of those things are available to students on the same campus. They don’t have to leave their community! A CCRC like the Holland Christian Home is similar. Residents live their own lives, without the burdens of cooking and cleaning, in a safe environment that makes it easy to build
friendships. And when a new stage of life brings new challenges, residents remain at the Home while receiving the care they need from 24/7 licensed nurses. Life-Long Value Now more than ever, CCRCs are among the best living options for seniors’ quality of life, peace of mind, and financial security. With costs skyrocketing for specialized communities like Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing, CCRCs combine many of the same kinds of care all in one place for one price. In fact, because of our special contract arrangement — rare among CCRCs in New Jersey — residents at the Holland Christian Home do not pay the Home more money when they need more care. Over an eightyear period (which is the average length of stay at the Home), costs calculate to approximately $195 per day. That includes any amount of time spent in our skilled nursing facility. The 2019 median cost of skilled nursing in New Jersey was $350 per day1 — 79% more! Oh, and did you know that the Home is the only CCRC in Passaic County? Call today to schedule a tour and see if the Holland Christian Home might be what you or your loved one is looking for. 1

When you go shopping for a Senior Living Community what are some things you look for? Is it the shiny granite? Is it the Chandeliers hanging from the ceiling? If these are some of the things you are going to look at or consider than you are not focusing on the right things. Choosing the right community is a big decision. Whether looking for yourself, or you are looking for a loved one, there are other things to consider. Sometimes the glare of the crystal chandeliers can cloud your vision. Here are some things to consider and questions to ask as you look. What different types of communities are there? How does a community determine which level of care is right for you? If you need more care what are the options? What is the staff turnover like? How often is there a new Executive Director? Can you meet the Executive Director? Does the staff look Happy? Do residents look happy? Are they friendly? How can you evaluate a new community that has not been open? This can be tricky. Try visiting another community in their portfolio. A new Community should still provide you with Menus,
program calendars. How can you determine if a community is well run? Can you join them for a meal or attend an activity program? Ask if there are current residents you can speak with? Your monthly fee covers more than physical space, so

make sure you feel good about the services offered. Is there a Yearly increase? What have they been in the last 5 years? What are your options if you run out of funds? If you need a higher level of care, will you be able to afford the community? Get the rates for all levels of care. What is in place to help a new resident ADJUST. A community should have a clear plan to help with residents moving in. Come for a meal and an afternoon of activities; meet some residents. MEDICARE 2020 “IN A NUTSHELL”
Medicare 2020 “In A Nutshell” (Parts A, B & Medigap Plans) Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.” Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance
Medicare Part B Medical Insurance
Supplemental Policy Plans A - N Medigap
Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)
Most people pay monthly $135.50–$144.30 (Premium could be higher based on income)
Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.
$1,364 deductible (per benefit period) It is possible to pay the $1,364 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care. Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more. Providers are paid by Medicare assignment. No coverage outside USA. Most doctors accept Medicare. No coverage outside the USA. No out-of-pocket maximum. Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

Mom devoted her life to my well-being and happiness. Now, it’s my turn to provide for her.
Choosing a senior care facility for the loved one in your life can be an emotionally trying experience. How can you know you’re making the right call? You can’t. The proof, ultimately, is in the care your loved one experiences. So how can you avoid a poor decision? Before selecting a senior facility, ask questions, lots of them. • Is the staff experienced? How long has this facility been serving our community? • Is it designed and equipped to meet my loved one’s needs, today, and into the future? • Is there a presence of medical professionals offering proficient and responsive care? • Will they work with us, creating a plan that gives my loved one a family community they can call home, today and always? Assisted Living We are a Family-Owned, Physician-Operated, Continuum-of-Care Senior Living Campus, a concept we pioneered over 50 years ago. We’ve been perfecting it ever since. Schedule a tour and we’ll answer those questions and more over a complimentary lunch. Discover: The Allendale Difference.
