New Intensive Outpatient Program University Behavioral Center (UBC) for Seniors a psychiatric hospital in Orlando that offers the following University Behavioral Center (UBC) adult services: Inpatient Mental Health Treatment, Medical Detox, Substance Abuse Treatment, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and our newest program the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).

The PHP and IOP outpatient services meet at UBC and offer individuals the intensity of therapy and intervention with the convenience of remaining at home during the evenings and weekends. The Intensive Outpatient program (IOP) group therapy sessions meet 3 days a week for 3 hours for Substance Use Disorder or Mental Health Disorder. The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) group therapy sessions meet 5 days a week for 6 hours a day Monday through Friday. PHP provides a short-term, intensive outpatient treatment option for adults who are having difficulty managing daily life stressors. The primary purpose of PHP is to provide weekday treatment to prevent inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. This program is designed to last 2-4 weeks depending on each client’s individualized needs. Clients will meet with their program licensed mental health therapist for initial assessment and to develop treatment plan goals. Clients will meet with an attending psychiatrist for medication management and consultation. The group

model provides a pleasant, holistic approach, addressing issues related to depression, anxiety, impulsive behaviors, mood swings, childhood or adult traumas, anger management, and interpersonal conflict. UBC treatment programs utilize an evidence based therapy model called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). The therapy has been proven to enhance motivation for treatment and build vital skills for handling crisis and relationships that can be transferred into the patient’s life. Therapists work with clients to balance radical acceptance and change in their lives. DBT encompasses four main areas: Mindfulness, Emotional Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Distress Tolerance. Each area is reviewed throughout the program with clients developing specific coping skills needed to lead healthier lives. Patients will have daily meditation and weekly yoga sessions to facilitate balance in their lives as well. University Behavioral Center mental health and substance abuse treatment services are in-network with most major health insurances including Medicare, Medicare HMOs, and Medicaid HMOs. Musical Minds Choir Musical Minds Choir, the first Florida-based community-wide performance group composed of individuals and their families living with Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases, continues its second year under the partnership of Central Florida Community Arts (CFCArts) and Watercrest Senior Living Group this fall. All individuals with early stage memory loss from Alzheimer’s or dementia are invited to join in weekly choir rehearsals with their significant other or caregiver, regardless of experience or skill level. Research shows that music is stored in a part of the brain last affected by Alzheimer’s disease and that the therapeutic experience of enjoying music often establishes personal and communicative connections that are difficult for those with memory loss and dementia. “Central Florida Community Arts is excited and honored to partner with Watercrest Senior Living Group and our other charitable organizations to create a memorable experience through a choir and music program reaching adults with early stages of Alzheimer’s,” says Joshua Vickery, Founder and Executive Director of CFCArts, a local nonprofit dedicated to enhancing quality of life by making the arts accessible and

affordable to all. “Our organization believes strongly in the healing power of music and the arts and know this will have a life changing impact on so many people.” Chris Shepherd, Director of Creative Program Development for Watercrest Senior Living Group, was compelled to serve the local community by expanding the music therapy program to local individuals living with early stage Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases. Shepherd approached Vickery, and together through a common vision to serve, they established the Musical Minds Choir. The program founders welcome the support and partnership of the local Brain Fitness Club, the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and North Florida, the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Resource Center, Music for the Health of It, Arden Courts of Winter Springs, VITAS Healthcare, and Westminster Towers of Winter Park in an effort to unite the many local resources for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases. The Musical Minds Choir rehearsals are held at Central Christian Church, located at 250 SW Ivanhoe Boulevard, Orlando, FL 32804. U.S. National Library of Medicine definitively explains that “C-reactive protein (CRP) is produced by the liver. The level of CRP rises when there is inflammation throughout the body. It is one of a group of proteins called “acute phase reactants” that go up in response to inflammation.” By ordering a CRP blood test, healthcare providers can determine the level of inflammation in the body and make recommendations for reducing the inflammation markers. Pain is one of the most common indicators of inflammation; and the popular treatments for pain are NSAIDs and analgesics. However, according to the National Kidney Foundation long-term use of certain NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and over-the-counter analgesics may cause an increased risk of sudden kidney failure and even progressive kidney damage. Due to all the side effects of medications and repercussions of long-term use, many pain sufferers are seeking alternatives that provide effective relief of pain without the risks. For many older adults, like you, what fills their heart with joy is the relationships that they have with other people. What many of us have found: the secret to living a happy life is having people you can count on to run to your side in a time of need, no matter what. Science and studies now show what many of us have known for a long time, volunteering actually improves your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It leads to living a longer life, decreases the likelihood of dementia, and decreases risks of high blood pressure. There are many ways to build meaningful relationships with others, whether its teaching a child to read, mentoring at-risk youth, cooking/serving/packing/delivering meals to the hungry, helping rebuild homes for the homeless, comforting patients and their families in hospitals and hospices, providing support to a homebound or limited mobility senior citizen, and many more opportunities as a volunteer. In your community, there are many people in need who are looking for that person, and you

can be that person. Volunteers for Community Impact (VCI) believes that everyone deserves to have that special someone on whom they can count on, no matter what. VCI creates high impact volunteer opportunities bringing together mature adults enabling them to be able to foster meaningful, lifelong friendships. As an older adult, you are uniquely qualified to help. Let VCI connect you with the opportunity to live the life of your dreams by building meaningful relationships with others as a volunteer. VCI programs provide benefits such as ongoing formal and informal recognition and appreciation for your service, accident/personal liability/excess automobile insurance, when feasible, to deliver a meal at their volunteer locations, and for low-income volunteers, a non-taxable stipend for their volunteer service. These children, the hungry, the homeless, or struggling individuals are waiting for you. Be a Hero – Volunteer!

Recognizing Physical Signs of Most people are familiar with the Alzheimer’s cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease; memory loss, inability to remember names and places, difficulty speaking, and mood swings.

However, the physical signs of Alzheimer’s are not as well known. By becoming familiar with the physical signs, it is easier to identify Alzheimer’s in its early stages, allowing treatment to begin as soon as possible. The first alerting sign is repeating unusual actions, like opening the refrigerator repeatedly, aimlessly walking between rooms, or looking for an item that has already been found. Other signs, especially when uncharacteristic, are lack of personal hygiene, and wearing the same clothing repeatedly, either from forgetfulness or apathy. Another symptom of Alzheimer’s is having fresh bruises and cuts with no memory of how they got there. Common cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer’s are sundowning and wandering, dangerous activities that could result in these injuries. It is important to manage these behaviors to reduce injury risks for the person suffering and caregiver. Loss of fine motor skills is another alerting factor. This lack of precise

movements is particularly noticeable at dinnertime when trying to grip utensils. Having a difficult time using dinner utensils could be a sign that something isn’t right. Facial expressions such as frowning, grimacing, keeping eyes tightly closed, or rapidly blinking could all be signs of Alzheimer’s. Bodily expressions such as rigid posture, fidgeting, rocking, or changes in walking patterns are also warning signs. Because Alzheimer’s Disease is easiest to manage when detected early, it’s important to recognize these symptoms to get help as soon as possible. Don’t hesitate to call a physician, as they will be able to help find the appropriate resources. Respite, hourly, or live-in caregivers can be good options to help a family member, friend or loved one feel comfortable and safe in the home. Services are provided by Registered Nurse under the supervision of a M.D. Some agencies may have certified diabetic nurse instructors or cardiac care specialty RN’s. ENTERAL FEEDING – Enteral feeding, or tube feeding, is a way to deliver nutrients through a tube if you cannot take food or drink through your mouth.

HOSPICE – Hospices provide individuals facing terminal illness with care at home or in a healthcare facility. The goal is to assist patients to live the last stage of their lives with dignity. The focus is on comfort rather than treatment. HOUR MINIMUM – The least number of hours a Non-Medical Home Care Agency will be available for hire. Medicare certified Home Health Agencies are not on a specified time frame. INTRAVENOUS THERAPY (IV) – Refers to any medical treatments/ medications that need to be introduced into the body via a patient’s veins. Numerous IV Therapies can be provided in a patient’s home under supervision of a MD. Some of these include: inter-infective/ antibiotic therapies, hydration therapy, pain management, chemotherapy and central line care and maintenance. MED-ALERT – Company offers a pendent or home alert system that notifies staff that user is in distress and needs immediate assistance. NON-MEDICAL HOME CARE – Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s), homemaking, companionship and other nonmedical in home care. These services are available for hire after, or in conjunction with, Medicare certified services. Private payment,

Occupational therapists help clients not only to improve their basic motor functions and reasoning abilities, but also to compensate for permanent loss of function. HOSPICE CARE

Hospice Care Definitions HOSPICE Hospices provide individuals facing terminal illness with care at home or in a healthcare facility. The goal is to assist patients to live the last stage of their lives with dignity. The focus is on comfort rather than treatment. Services Provided: N-NURSE – Assesses patient’s physical needs, develops and coordinates the plan of care, ensures symptom control and management, provides patient/family teaching as needed SW-SOCIAL WORKER – Assesses patient and family emotional and social needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, referrals and support to meet identified needs CHAPLAIN – Assesses patient and family spiritual needs, develops a plan of care, provides counseling, assists with memorial preparations. HOME HEALTH AIDE – Provides direct personal care to patient, emotional support to patient and family, reports identified needs to RN. VOLUNTEER – Provides respite and needed non-medical services for patients and their families, offers support at time of death and during bereavement. Levels of Care: RO-ROUTINE CARE – Occurs when regularly scheduled visits are adequate in maintaining the individual’s symptom management. Care is provided at the individual’s private residence, a retirement community,

an assisted living, or a skilled nursing facility. RE-RESPITE CARE – Provided when the family needs time to rest or go out of town for a short time. Care may be provided in a long-term care facility depending on the condition of the individual. Hospice is responsible for financial arrangements with the Longterm care facility. GIP – General In-Patient Care – Provided in a skilled nursing facility when the symptoms cannot be managed elsewhere. The skilled nursing facility must have 24-hour R.N. coverage as deemed by Medicare guidelines. General in-patient care is usually short in duration. This level of care is usually due to symptoms which are out of control and more intensive nursing services are required. If an individual is at a care facility, room and board are covered by hospice during this period. CC-CONTINUOUS CARE – Provided to prevent the individual from going to the hospital when a crisis occurs. It also is given when more help is needed to assist the individual and family in coping with the crisis. This level of care is usually provided at the individual’s residence no matter where that may be. The criteria for continuous care may include: Severe pain or symptoms which are out of control, psychotic episodes, breakdown of caregiver, imminent death and family unable to cope. Continuous care is typically reserved for end of life or other crises that requires a constant presence by a nurse or care team.

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

AROMATHERAPY – Uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering one’s mood, cognitive, psychological or physical well-being. This is not reimbursed by Medicare. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS – Grief is the normal and universal reaction humans have to the loss of those they love. When your loved one passes, you may go through a period of bereavement and experience grief. Many provide Grief Groups that meet and address issues of grief in a supportive group setting. INDIGENT PATIENTS – Does the hospice accept non funded or indigent patients? This is usually on a case by case basis and at the determination of the hospice company. Many have a non-profit organization that can help support the care of non-covered patients. IN-PATIENT CARE – These hospices offer full hospice services in their on-campus unit or building. The patient moves into the inpatient care facility to receive their hospice services rather than in the patients’ home setting. LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPY – Used as a method for relaxation to alleviate stress, anxiety and pain

with a light hands-on approach, as well as providing an alternative to those who can’t take medication or prefer not to, massage therapy has become essential in hospice care. This is not reimbursed by Medicare.

HOSPICE CARE

24/7 ADMISSIONS – If a patient qualifies for hospice care, they should be admitted as early as the family requests. Many agencies admit patients to hospice,24/7, evenings weekends, and holidays.

MUSIC THERAPY – Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals”. A music therapist creates goals and objectives for their patients and uses music activities and music experiences (listening, composition, improvisation, or playing/singing a familiar song) in order to achieve those goals. This is not reimbursed by Medicare. PAIN PUMPS AVAILABLE – Many patients have their symptoms controlled through oral medications. Some situations require a pain pump where medications are administered through an IV pump. If this is the situation, inquire with the hospice RN case manager to see if pain pumps are available through their agency. PALLIATIVE CARE – Specialized medical care for people with serious illness. VA CONTRACT – If the patient is not a Medicare Recipient and is covered by the VA, the VA will make payments directly to their contracted agencies. If a patient is a Veteran, but is a Medicare Recipient, they may choose any Medicare approved hospice agency for their care.

SENIOR HOUSING DEFINITIONS

AGE RESTRICTIONS – Some communities have a restriction on the youngest age they are allowed to accept. These restrictions vary by community. ALZHEIMER’S / DEMENTIA ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY – Licensed assisted living facility or skilled nursing facility that specialize in delivering care to victims of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Communities are typically bedroom-style rental units with common areas for dining and activities. Many are locked for residents’ safety. Specifically trained staff usually serves the special needs of this population. Amenities vary for each community. ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITY – Typically apartment-style with kitchenettes and private baths. Some

offer companion accommodations. Personal assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, eating and ambulation. Rates typically include a place to rest, one or two meals and snacks and activities for the day. Licensed communities are prohibited by law to promote these services without a specific license. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING & URBAN DEVELOPMENT (HUD) – helps apartment owners offer reduced rents to low-income tenants.

Participating households are required to pay the greater of 10% of their gross annual income or 30% of their adjusted income towards rent. Falling Down: Risk Factors According to the Centers for and Prevention Disease Control and Prevention, every year one in three adults over the age of 65 falls and 2 million are treated in the emergency room for fall-related injuries.

Knowing the risk factors for falling is the first step in preventing an incident. The most common risk factors include: a history of previous falls, balance impairment, gait abnormalities, dizziness, reduced muscle strength and flexibility, visual impairment, medications, advanced age, peripheral neuropathy and recent hospital discharge. As we age, falling becomes of greater concern, however, it is not an inevitable part of aging. The following steps can be taken to help significantly reduce the risk. Meet with your doctor: Have a discussion with your doctor about your medications. Are there any that can cause dizziness, drowsiness or cognitive impairment? These may need to be discontinued or dosing may need to be modified. Keep moving: Many older adults lose their sense of balance or experience a decreased level of coordination, flexibility and muscle strength. With your doctor’s approval, consider activities such as walking, water workouts or tai chi. There are also exercise programs designed to specifically target strength, balance and flexibility. Physical therapy is advised after a recent hospitalization or while recovering from an injury or surgery.

See your podiatrist: There are multiple foot and ankle conditions that can compromise balance during gait. Bunions and hammer toes can limit the ability to use your toes to purchase the ground and maintain balance. Calluses and corns or peripheral neuropathy can decrease tactile sensitivity, making it difficult to feel the floor under your feet. A podiatrist may be able to help reduce the risk due to these conditions. Wear sturdy shoes: Wearing slippers, socks or being barefoot has consistently been associated with an increased risk of falling. However, not all shoes are protective for falls. Avoid wearing high heels, flimsy shoes, shoes without adequate fixation (laces, straps, or buckles) and shoes with smooth tread. Have your vision checked: Older adults should have their eyes examined every year to evaluate for cataracts, retinopathy, glaucoma and other forms of visual impairment. Those with contact lenses or glasses should have the strength of their prescriptions confirmed and changed if necessary. Safety in the home: Remove fall hazards that could be tripped over and install better lighting and handrails where appropriate.

Organize and Downsize to a Unorganized and cluttered areas can Happier Life make daily tasks difficult. Just finding your keys or filing paid bills can become a frustrating chore. Consider these steps to take control and simplify your lifestyle.

Identify the essentials by making a complete list of rooms and include large furnishings. For 30 days, place a check mark next to each piece of furniture that you or a visitor utilizes. Most people are surprised to learn how few items are actually used. Sketch a simple floor plan of your home. At the end of each day, draw a line to indicate the paths you used. Repeat daily, with lines drawn over previously drawn lines. When recorded for a month, this exercise can highlight cabinets, closets and entire rooms that are rarely used and it may be time to downsize. When organizing, start small and stay the course. S et realistic goals and stick to them. Progress will grow confidence and provide encouragement. n S hare your goals and progress with a supportive friend who’ll provide accountability. n U se a timer to pace yourself. you over-exert yourself. L abel boxes or bins by topic and consolidate knick-knacks and photos.

Make a plan by sorting unneeded items into three basic categories: Gift, Sell, and Trash. Start by gifting sentimental items to people close to you. Assign colored dots that allow each person to select their preferred items. Or gather everyone together, draw straws to determine the order and allow each person to select an item. Selling home furnishings depends on the item, quantity and its value. Options include an antique dealer, an estate sale, a consignment shop, post on EBay or hold an old fashioned yard sale. Donate remaining items to Am-Vets or your local thrift shop, which may pick-up. Feeling overwhelmed? If downsizing would help you live a happier, healthier life, there is hope. RESPITE CARE / SHORT-TERM STAY – Otherwise known as a short-term stay. Any provider of IL, AL, ALZ or SNF care can elect to provide fully furnished accommodations to a person for a short period of time. Rates usually quoted on a daily basis and are typically inclusive of all services and amenities. RETIREMENT COMMUNITY – Housing designed specifically for mature adults. Typically Studio, 1 BR or 2 BR rental apartments with full kitchens, and private baths are available. Services include meal plans, transportation, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance. Amenities are usually abundant; formal libraries, computer stations, swimming pools, gardens, and other social gathering spaces. Rates are monthly, and are typically based on size/location of apartment. SECURED UNIT – Dedicated to Alzheimer’s/Dementia residents to prevent wandering outside the community without supervision. SKILLED CARE – 24 hour licensed nursing services, eight hours of which are RN covered. Patient may receive rehab services either inpatient or outpatient and may be fully dependent for ADL’s. Patients receive medications by an RN according to a licensed physicians orders.

SKILLED NURSING FACILITY – Facilities provide 24/7 care for residents and offer full assistance with ADL’s. Daily rates typically include a furnished bedroom and a private or shared bath, meals, activities, transportation, phone service, cable television and all personal/nursing care. Payor sources usually accepted are Medicare, Medicaid, VA, some insurance plans and private sources. TRACH CARE - Refers to care administered to patients who have undergone a tracheotomy. A tracheotomy is a surgical procedure in which a cut or opening is made in the windpipe (trachea). The surgeon inserts a tube into the opening to bypass an obstruction, allow air to get to the lungs, or remove secretions.
