LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHERS AND CONTACT INFORMATION

Dear Readers of Southeast Mississippi Once again, beginning our 22nd year, we present the Seniors Blue Book of Southeast Mississippi. Our mission remains the same as when we started: To provide needed information to senior citizens to promote self-reliance, an enhanced quality of life, and dignity in aging. There are many services and benefits available to seniors, however many are not easy to find. The Seniors Blue Book overcomes that problem with its alphabetical listing of community resources, and its comprehensive listing of senior housing and home health listings. When you need assistance, consider the medical and residential services advertised in the

TM

Blue Book. If your medical team prescribes Home Health services, a walker or wheelchair, insist on those listed in the Blue Book. They advertise so you can have this asset in your hands at this time. They are good people!

Paying it Forward 2022, and Thanks When Carolan and I began this Seniors Blue Book in early 2001, I would have never thought that it would be such a rewarding project. I could not have imagined the importance of our mission, nor the continuing gratitude we receive for producing this resource directory. After all this time, 21 years, we still get calls from senior citizens who discover and “use” the Blue Book. I say “use” instead of “read” because it’s not a magazine,

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

All thanks go to our sponsors who advertise and make this possible. They know the value of the exposure and visibility they receive from their ads. Thanks also goes to the citizens of our Coastal and Pine Belt communities for embracing our project and using the Book to help themselves and others they care for. Thanks also goes to healthcare professionals including home health nurses, aides, social workers, hospital case managers, hospice caregivers, and senior housing associates who continually ask for copies to better serve their clientele. Thanks to the many local citizens who call us for more copies. I also thank the U.S. Postal Service for providing Regional Rate shipments at an affordable rate. Why? Because our market area covers 9900 square miles. We mail approximately 5,100 books to 140 locations annually that we couldn’t possibly cover in less than 4 weeks, with twenty tanks of gas, and 80 hours of driving. Most important is the beginning, 21 years ago, when Marion Hersch put her trust in us, taught us, and made this start-up business possible

for us to “pay forward” to those in need of valuable information. Furthermore, it takes a reliable team of graphics artists to create such beautiful ads. We owe many thanks to Bernadette de Isaza in Orlando, and Michele James in Virginia Beach. They are truly creative artists, not just graphic mechanics, and have always been quickly available when the rush is on. Now, it’s time to transfer this responsibility to another who can better serve the community by taking this Seniors Blue Book to a higher level of benefit to the community. We thank God for the health,

stamina, and purpose we have to keep doing this at our ages. I reached “the big 80” last year; now it’s time to “pay forward” in other ways. Who would have thought we’d get old? Best regards to all, Thad and Carolan Anderson, Publishers Indicates website link on seniorsbluebook.com

SENIOR HOUSING

First you should familiarize yourself with the many options available and determine which one is best for your needs. You will find definitions of each type of housing at the beginning of the housing section. Then turn to our easy to read comparison grids. The grids are divided into 3 categories, depending on the type of community: Independent Living and Retirement, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing. The buildings are listed by city or county so you can zero in on the specific areas you are looking for.

Geriatric Behavioral Health – Help Is Did you know that a Senior Citizen’s Readily Available mental, or behavioral, health has positive or negative effects on their physical health?

Whether its pain issues, cardiovascular health or some other medical conditions, maintaining good behavioral health can significantly improve recovery time from illness and continued well-being. Just as specific treatments are given for physical injury, specific mental health programs are designed for seniors; it’s important to get the appropriate type of treatment for geriatric behavioral health. Sometimes a senior’s behavioral health issues may be addressed on an outpatient basis based on what the doctor orders. Outpatient programs may be primarily based on group therapy. During group therapy, licensed health professionals lead the group by setting appropriate topics for group discussion and encourage members of the group to participate. Group therapy is effective because a participant interacts with others in a structured setting that promotes a better understanding of geriatric behavioral health issues. Seniors share their thoughts and experiences, learning from each other with the guidance of the group leader. Social interaction helps the senior to talk and socialize with other seniors who may have similar experiences. In addition to group therapy, the senior may also receive individual, family or marital therapy if ordered by the doctor. Sometimes

36 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – 2020 SUMMER-WINTER

these Outpatient Programs can meet a senior’s behavioral health needs without requiring more intensive care such as hospitalization. If a senior citizen’s behavioral health needs cannot be met on an outpatient basis, more intensive services such as acute geriatric behavioral health treatment in a hospital are available. Each patient has a goal-oriented plan detailing how the hospital, patient and family will work together to reach treatment goals, resulting in discharge from the hospital. A senior may need this type of treatment due to thoughts of self-harm, not wanting to live, depression, anxiety, or medication management issues. One of the greatest benefits of acute in-patient care is the 24-hour controlled environment while behavioral health issues are addressed. How does someone go about requesting behavioral health care? The first step is a phone call to a geriatric behavioral health provider, and have an assessment by a healthcare professional. Strict laws regarding rights to privacy protect all conversations and treatment by behavioral health professionals and health care facilities. Your confidentiality is protected by law, so if you feel that you or a loved one may benefit from these services call a geriatric behavioral health provider today. ~ Editor’s Note: For further information contact a mental health provider listed in this book.

REHABILITATION FACILITIES There are two types of rehabilitation facilities; in-patient where you live at a facility for a specific amount of time and out-patient where you visit a facility for services. Most hospitals have an associated rehabilitation department, and all skilled nursing facilities offer rehabilitation. Rehabilitation Hospitals, however, exclusively provide intense rehabilitation care 24/7 , frequent physicians’ visits, and rehabilitation team experts directly supervised by a Registered Nurse.

INDEPENDENT LIVING / RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES 72 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – SPRING-FALL 2022

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

SeniorsBlueBook.com

giving up their driver’s license. Usually, it starts with driving shorter distances, or avoiding high traffic areas. Many seniors drive less and less at night as it becomes more difficult to see clearly. But then there is the BIG question… Do I Really Need to Stop Driving Completely? Giving up your driving privileges can be one of the most difficult decisions you may have to make. This triggers a deep feeling of “loss of independence” which can impact many areas of your life, both physically and emotionally. This can be a very difficult adjustment. There is a natural desire to continue doing everything you were doing before, including going out to eat and visiting your doctor. There is also a natural desire to not want to be a burden on our children, friends, or neighbors by asking for rides and assistance all the time. It can be difficult to accept that as you grow older, reaction time slows, vision deteriorates, and many symptoms of age can start to catch up with you. It’s important to know when it is the right time to stop driving for both your own safety, your passengers, and others sharing the road with you.

What About My Doctor Visits? Fortunately, there are a few companies here in Utah who specialize in personal in-home medical visits. That’s right, the doctor actually visits you, in YOUR OWN HOME. Home care visits can be BETTER than the medical services you receive at your doctors’ office. Visits tend to be longer, more comprehensive, comfortable, and you can ask more questions spending more time discussing symptoms you may be experiencing. This can also save you a lot of hassle, as you won’t need to arrange rides getting to the doctor’s office, on days you would rather stay home.

INDEPENDENT LIVING / RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES

When Is the Right Time to Stop Driving? No one ever wants to think about

The Bottom Line It is easier than ever for seniors to live a normal active life even if they do need to give up some conveniences like a driver’s license. Understandably, you will feel some lack of independence initially and there will be time to adjust to life not driving, but thanks to the many modern conveniences, the opportunity for you to maintain your lifestyle will remain secure. ~ Editor’s Note: The article was submitted by AMG Senior Medical Group. ADULT DAY CARE OR IN-HOME CARE: YOUR CHOICE

Adult Day Care or In-Home Care: Your Choice Many of us were familiar with “day care” when our kids were pre-school age and we needed the kids to be cared for while we were at work. Well, what about having mom or dad living with us when they shouldn’t be left alone at home all day. Not only would it be boring, but it may be medically and socially unadvisable. Nowadays we have choices of in-home care such as a Home Care and Personal Assistance agency (page 55), or away-fromhome care in an Adult Day Care (ADC) facility (page 12).

The available level of care varies among agencies and ADC facilities, so be sure your loved one’s needs will be met when selecting care. ADC offers interaction with other seniors and activities not available at home. Popular among ADCs are card and board games, Wii video games that make you move around, and some have 90 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – SPRING-FALL 2022

exercise programs such as chair exercises suitable for seniors. Also, you can be assured the ADC meals are nutritious and meet specific dietary needs of the client. Some have scheduled, chaperoned trips to places like Walmart. In-home care with a caregiver affords certain “comforts of home” that may be beneficial, especially if the senior has strong resistance to “getting out.” An in-home caregiver can drive the client to have lunch, walk in the mall, get a snack or ice cream, or just visit old memorable places. Both types of care have advantages; we have had families tell us that they use both options, with in-home care on the first two days of the work week, and ADC the other three days. Whichever you choose, be sure it’s providing an enriching, satisfying experience for your loved one. ~ Editor’s Note: This article submitted by the Seniors Blue Book of Southeast Mississippi.

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

maintenance and transportation. Personal assistance with ADLs available. Rates also vary from all-inclusive to base rates with levels of care. Payor sources usually accepted are private pay or some insurance plans. RESPITE CARE – Provides a temporary break for caregivers by allowing a resident to have a short-term stay in a community that can meet their needs. Many assisted living communities and nursing homes have a respite care program. Residents typically stay from a week to a month, depending on the situation, and receive all the services of the community to meet their needs. Respite care services are usually private-pay.

continued from page 67

SKILLED NURSING CARE – Is provided by licensed nurses in nursing homes, 24-hrs, for residents with complex medical conditions requiring a high level of need and routine services. Residents can have a private or a shared room. Meals are served in a dining area, activities are scheduled, and therapies are available as prescribed by a physician. Some skilled nursing facilities have a separate secured area for residents with Alzheimer’s or other dementia conditions. “Long term care facilities” or “nursing centers” are synonymous terms for skilled nursing facilities. Most facilities provide rehabilitation following a hospital stay, and accept Medicare, Medicaid, and private pay. ~
