Same Trusted Seniors Blue Book, New Design!
Caregiving is exhausting, it demands one’s constant attention. Relief is available, however; that’s where Kare-In-Home Private Duty Nursing provides valuable relief for George. George says, “Christie (the KIHPDN caregiver) comes in and does everything! She helps keep-up the house, feeds Pat, even does laundry! The house can be a little messy when she arrives, yet when she leaves everything is put away.” Equally important is the pleasant conversation George enjoys with Christie. Caregiving is for the caregiver too.

now is the time to Prepare Hurricane season is three months away. Think of what you would have to gather together before evacuating for five days, maybe more, to evade a dangerous storm. We seniors have faced this situation many times in the past. We may think we can “ride it out” if we are in no danger of flooding, however there are other problems to consider: If you need help during the storm, it may not be available n If your house is so damaged and you are no longer secure, there’s nowhere to go n
24 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – SPRING-SUMMER 2015
If you need help after the storm, roads may be impassible n Home phones may not operate to call for assistance n If electricity is out, your electric stove and water well pump will not work and you’ll be in the dark for days n
If you evacuate, be prepared to stay away for a few days. In advance, prepare boxes of non-perishable food items, clothes, personal items, medications, bottled water, and towels. Have these ready to throw in the car when you evacuate. Do you

have pets? If so, include them in the preparations. Other things to plan on: n Flashlights and batteries n Paper plates, food wrap, plastic utensils, paper towels, cups, and a manual can opener n Cash – enough for a few days. If electricity is out, credit card sales will not work n Auto fuel and maintenance: Keep the tank full, don’t let it get past one-half. Plan in detail where you will go and who you will contact so someone will
know where you are. If you haven’t done so by now, learn to “text” on your cell phone. Text messages may get through when voice messages will not. These are just a few thoughts about planning ahead. The time for this is now, not when a storm is a few days away. At our stage in life we don’t need the stress of a disaster hurricane. Let’s use the wisdom and judgment we’ve gained by living this long, and be well prepared for the next hurricane.

Warning signs for Mental health for seniors is as important Psychiatric as physical health, but not easily recognizable to many. Physical injury like a Referral broken bone, cut, sprain, and illnesses like the flu are easy to see. How about mental health? How do we know when our mental health needs attention? We may not be able to recognize mental health symptoms as readily as physical symptoms. In fact, we ourselves may not be capable of recognizing our symptoms. Others, who know us, are the ones to recognize our need for help. Either way, there are identifiable symptoms that indicate a need for treatment. Listed below are a few most obvious ones. Do you know of a friend or loved one who demonstrates the following traits? Sleep disturbances, such as excessive sleep or not sleeping enough n Changes in appetite: decreased appetite or over-eating n Crying Spells n Isolation or withdrawing from social activities n Making statements of wanting to harm self or others-saying they want to die n Decreased motivation n
40 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – SPRING-SUMMER 2015
Loss of interest in daily activities that use to bring pleasure (bingo, television, visiting with friends, etc.) n Refusing medications and/or assistance with care. n Increase in anxiety: excessive worrying, restless, etc. n
Now that you’ve read this, does a senior friend or relative come to mind? If so, you may want to talk to the family about getting help. It’s not uncommon for us to need mental health treatment, and there’s no negative stigma about this – something senior citizens recall from many years ago when they were children. Mental health treatment has come a long, long way since then; Better counseling and overall treatment options have benefitted many of us. Look for another article in our next issue with additional more complex symptoms. Editor’s Note: This article provided by Beacon Behavioral Health. They can be contacted at 985-607-0290

52 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – SPRING-SUMMER 2015
Meet Jackie Charbonnet of Ocean Springs, aging gracefully and enjoying an active life. Jackie’s four sons and their families assure that she enjoys life to the maximum, a just reward for the caring and devotion she’s given them. Her son, Derrick, and his family live nearby and are active in her life. Maintaining her home and lifestyle is made more pleasant by the assistance of PDN, a service of Kare-InHome, helping Jackie with just about anything that needs to be done. PDN caregivers are anxious to help and pleasant to be with. “They are good people to work with. I’m happy to have them” is what Jackie and Derrick would say about PDN.
The benefits of a PDN caregiver go way beyond help with household chores. For the family, knowing PDN will be there is comforting. They, and Jackie, have peace of mind knowing care is available on schedule, on time, every morning. “They’ll do anything we ask; they never say no,” said Jackie, ”and my friends like her. I’m happy to have them; they’re good people to work with.

Care for the We often hear the term “Care for the Caregiver Caregiver” but most people do not understand the profound depth of what that means. It is documented that the caregiver for someone with a disability or illness often has more urgent medical concerns than the patient themselves. While that may seem odd to some people, just ask a caregiver when the last time they had a vacation, a night to themselves, a day to do nothing or have been to a doctor or dentist appointment. The fact is, that as caregivers, we often give all our energy and resources to the one we care for and at the end of the day, there is very little to give ourselves. Support groups, counseling and educational seminars are wonderful resources but it has been my experience that some caregivers find the idea of an outing overwhelming. But, there is hope. Just like trying to change your exercise habits or lose weight, you have to take small consistent steps and not try to run a marathon on the first day. The first step is to respect and know yourself. When you think about tools and tips that are available, use what works for you but do not be afraid to try something new. If it works, continue to do it, but if doesn’t work for you, then be confident enough to move to another

technique. Remember that you are more than just a caregiver. You are a valued member of the community, a mother or father, a son or daughter, a sister or brother and a friend. You are important and significant and you
deserve to take care of yourself and be happy. Your job is physically demanding, emotionally draining, time consuming, frustrating and the most wonderful, fulfilling and rewarding job you could ever have. 12 Ways for a Caregiver to stay Healthy and Happy n

Geriatric Healthcare Professionals Geriatric healthcare professionals are dedicated to helping older people stay as healthy and independent as possible. They have special training in caring for older adults, and focus on preventing and treating disease and disability in later life.
There are different types of geriatric care providers: A geriatrician is a medical doctor who is specially trained to take care of the complicated health problems that many older adults have geriatric psychiatrists are physicians who have completed additional training so they can meet the mental health needs of older adults. geriatric nurse practitioners are registered nurses with advanced training and experience in caring for older adults, including those with complex health problems. geriatric social workers usually have a master’s degree in social work and training and experience counseling and arranging needed services for older adults. geriatric pharmacists usually have a doctorate of pharmacy along with the training and experience required to address polypharmacy and the complicated medication needs of older adults. A geriatric care manager is a health and human services professional with

a specialized focus on issues related to aging and elder care. Geriatric care managers will create a care plan that meets the needs of the older adult. This is what we might see in southeast Mississippi in future years as our aging population grows: n n
