SENIOR HOUSING

First you should familiarize yourself with the many options available and determine which one is best for your needs. You will find definitions of each type of housing at the beginning of the housing section. Then turn to our easy to read comparison grids. The grids are divided into 3 categories, depending on the type of community: Independent Living and Retirement, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing. The buildings are listed by city or county so you can zero in on the specific areas you are looking for.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital Or Skilled Know the difference for a successful recovery Nursing Facility Comparing an inpatient rehabilitation hospital to a skilled nursing facility isn’t something you normally think about until you are in an urgent position to find quality care. After an illness, accident or surgery–or even before to be proactive– it’s important to know the difference in levels of care to ensure the best recovery in the shortest amount of time. An inpatient rehabilitation hospital provides rehabilitation treatment in a hospital setting, unlike a Skilled Nursing Facility which has a separate rehabilitation wing. The inpatient rehabilitation hospital offers a higher level of care for a faster return home through a more intense regimen of three hours of therapy a day at least five days a week. In addition, inpatient rehabilitation hospitals stay up to date on the latest innovations in rehabilitation, giving patients the added advantage of state-of-the-art technologies for a higher level of care.

32 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – SUMMER–WINTER 2017

Widening the scale of contrast, patients in inpatient rehabilitation hospitals are seen frequently by a physician, even your private physician, to stay on top of progress and goals. Healthsouth Gulfport also provides around-theclock registered nurses who specialize in rehabilitation, which can make a measurable difference in patient outcomes, and less time spent in rehab. Bottom line, there is a difference when comparing inpatient rehabilitation hospitals to skilled nursing facilities for rehabilitation. Know the differences to make a smarter choice for rehabilitation. For additional information contact Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital, 228-822-6990. ~ Editor’s Note: This article provided by Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital staff. routine. Sure, her arthritis makes the first few steps painful, but she has learned how to adapt. It wasn’t too long ago that she was working full time, and before that running a house full of children. Life has been full of the need to adapt, and Sarah has always conquered her new challenges. Mary is Sarah’s daughter. She lives out of town, is working and raising her family. On her last trip home, she noticed that her Mom was not getting around as easily as before and she started to worry about her being on her own. Mary decided to get Sarah a personal emergency response system, or emergency button, in case she had a fall. “It will bring you peace of mind in case something happens when you are alone,” she said. But, Sarah keeps the button in her desk drawer. The idea of accidentally hitting it and having the paramedics knock down her door did not bring Sarah “peace of mind”, it brought on more anxiety. The things that bring peace of mind to a loved one, isn’t necessarily what brings peace of mind to the senior. We all have different motivations and priorities. Understanding that when communicating will help families find a comfortable middle ground that meets everyone’s needs. What is it that truly brings your

loved one their own peace of mind? For Sarah, it was connection to her children. Using technology to check in on her made it seem like her children wanted to use the tools instead of talking to her. It made her feel like a problem that Mary wanted to solve. But, for her daughter, it was a way to make sure that her Mom was safe because she wasn’t close by. Taking the time to talk through your own personal motivations and not projecting your feelings onto the senior will help them understand why the safety measures are important to you. Likewise, getting the senior to talk about how the “help” makes them feel, will allow for open communication and can ultimately lead to compromises that work for everyone. For Sarah and Mary, they compromised that they would start each day with a quick good morning phone call as a check in, and Sarah agreed to wear the button when she was going up and down the stairs to the basement to do laundry, bringing everyone their own personal peace of mind. ~

Welcome to Driftwood Nursing Center, a comfortable, home-like healthcare facility deeply committed to individuals who need long-term, skilled nursing, or rehabilitative care. We strive to be a facility where residents can be comfortable, find familiar faces, and build their lives. We also have a VA contract to provide care to our veterans. Driftwood is situated right next to Memorial Hospital of Gulfport—the largest hospital on the Mississippi Gulf Coast—in the heart of town and convenient to many other medical complexes. If you would like to take a tour, just drop by during visiting hours or call to schedule a visit.

MEDICARE 2017 “IN A NUTSHELL”

Medicare 2017 “In A Nutshell” (Parts A, B & Medigap Plans) Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.” Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part B Medical Insurance

Supplemental Policy Plans A - N Medigap

Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)

Most people pay monthly $104.90 - $121.86 (Premium could be higher based on income) $166 annual deductible.

Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.

$1,288 deductible (per hospital stay) It is possible to pay $1,260 several times a year. Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more. Providers are paid by Medicare assignment. No coverage outside USA. No out-of-pocket maximum. Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

80/20 after deductible. Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, preventive services and other Medicare approved benefits. Most doctors accept Medicare patients. No coverage outside the USA. No out-of-pocket maximum. Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

These plans generally pay the Part A & B deductibles, the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits. When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered Plans coordinate with any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare Can provide benefits outside USA Plans are only available through insurance companies. Need to add a Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties. Must have Part A & B to enroll.

For more information visit www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE. There is no additional cost to use the services of a full time insurance professional. Please call us or a broker in your local area for additional assistance. This article was written by Craig N. Anderson, President of Anderson Benefits, Inc. located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
