2 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – SUMMER 2018-WINTER 2019

A Place to Call Home Welcome to Driftwood Nursing Center, a comfortable, home-like healthcare facility deeply committed to individuals who need long-term, skilled nursing, or rehabilitative care. We strive to be a facility where residents can be comfortable, find familiar faces, and build their lives. We also have a VA contract to provide care to our veterans. Driftwood is situated right next to Memorial Hospital of Gulfport—the largest hospital on the Mississippi Gulf Coast—in the heart of town and convenient to many other medical complexes. If you would like to take a tour, just drop by during visiting hours or call to schedule a visit.

SENIOR HOUSING

First you should familiarize yourself with the many options available and determine which one is best for your needs. You will find definitions of each type of housing at the beginning of the housing section. Then turn to our easy to read comparison grids. The grids are divided into 3 categories, depending on the type of community: Independent Living and Retirement, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing. The buildings are listed by city or county so you can zero in on the specific areas you are looking for.

Geriatric Behavioral Health – Did you know that a Senior Help is Readily Citizen’s mental, or behavioral, Available health has positive or negative effects on their physical health? Whether its pain issues, cardiovascular health or some other medical conditions, maintaining good behavioral health can significantly improve recovery time from illness and continued well-being. Just as specific treatments are given for physical injury, specific mental

health programs are designed for seniors; it’s important to get the appropriate type of treatment for geriatric behavioral health. Sometimes a senior’s behavioral health issues may be addressed on an outpatient basis based on what the doctor orders. group therapy. During group therapy, licensed health professionals lead the group by setting appropriate topics for group discussion and encourage members of the group to participate. Group therapy is effective because a participant interacts with others in a structured setting that promotes a better understanding of geriatric behavioral health issues. Seniors share their thoughts and experiences, learning from each

other with the guidance of the group leader. Social interaction helps the senior to talk and socialize with other seniors who may have similar experiences. In addition to group therapy, the senior may also receive individual, family or marital therapy if ordered by the doctor. Sometimes these Outpatient Programs can meet a senior’s behavioral health needs without requiring more intensive care such as hospitalization. If a senior citizen’s behavioral health needs cannot be met on an

outpatient basis, more intensive services such as acute geriatric behavioral health treatment in a hospital are available. Each patient has a goal-oriented plan detailing how the hospital, patient and family will work together to reach treatment goals, resulting in discharge from the hospital. A senior may need this type of treatment due to thoughts of self-harm, not wanting to live, depression, anxiety, or medication management issues. One of the greatest benefits of acute in-patient care is the 24-hour controlled environment while behavioral health issues are addressed. How does someone go about requesting behavioral health care? The first step is a phone call to a geriatric behavioral health provider, and an assessment by a healthcare professional. Strict laws regarding rights to privacy protect all conversations and treatment by behavioral health professionals and health care facilities. Your confidentiality is protected by law, so if you feel that you or a loved one may benefit from these services call a geriatric behavioral health provider today. ~

Medicare 2018 “In A Nutshell” (Parts A, B & Medigap Plans) Original Medicare is a government health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older. It has four main parts: A, B, C & D. The chart below is an example of how Parts A & B work together with a traditional Medicare supplement also known as a “Medigap Plan.” Medicare Part A Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part B Medical Insurance

Supplemental Policy Plans A - N Medigap

Generally no cost (If you paid Medicare taxes while working)

Most people pay monthly $134.00 (Premium could be higher based on income)

Premium varies by company, age, location & other factors.

$1,316 deductible (per benefit period) It is possible to pay the $1,316 deductible and other daily charges for multiple stays & extended care. Plan covers: Inpatient hospital care, home health care services, hospice, inpatient skilled nursing & more. Providers are paid by Medicare assignment. No coverage outside USA. No out-of-pocket maximum. Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

$183 annual deductible. 80/20 after deductible. Plan covers: health care providers, ambulance, emergency care, outpatient surgical, preventive services and other Medicare approved benefits. Most doctors accept Medicare patients. No coverage outside the USA. No out-of-pocket maximum. Many people add a Medigap plan, Part D or an Advantage Plan (Part C) to fill the “gaps” in the coverage.

These plans generally pay the Part A & B deductibles, the 20% not covered by Part B & other Medicare eligible benefits. When this coordinates with Medicare, many benefits are 100% covered Plans coordinate with any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare Can provide benefits outside USA Plans are only available through insurance companies. Need to add a Part D plan to cover prescription drugs & avoid penalties. Must have Part A & B to enroll.

The Cognitive Benefits of Senior Socialization Just as importantly, socialization can provide a tremendous boost to a senior’s cognitive health as well. Positive social interactions on a consistent basis help keep seniors stimulated, mentally sharp and intellectually engaged. Not surprisingly, the improvements in these cognitive areas can help prevent general cognitive decline, including memory loss, Alz46 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – SUMMER 2018-WINTER 2019

As you can see, the upshot of all this is that healthy socialization leads to an increase in the quality of life seniors experience on a daily basis. Now let’s have a look at some of the obstacles to socialization that seniors often face. ~ Editor’s Note: This article provided by https://www.actsretirement.org

Caregiving at a Distance Concern about mom or dad’s health and well-being is top of mind for many baby boomers today. Worrisome signs of your parent’s frailty, progressive memory loss or the decline in health require more and more of your help and attention. But what if you live a good distance away? Whether you live an hour away, in a different state, or maybe even in another country, caregiving at a dis-

tance presents very real challenges. No longer just a devoted daughter or son, you’re now what the professionals in the aging field call a “long-distance caregiver.” Thrust into what is often a new world of intricate responsibilities, you may find it hard to see the personal rewards ahead. But they are there, as is the help available to assist you on this caregiving journey. There is no one right way to be a caregiver; everyone’s situation is

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

Critical Information It will help you immensely if, before there is a crisis, your parent(s) provide you with information to locate their important records, phone numbers, email addresses and other essential contact information. If a crisis has already occurred, such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury, this information is still important to gather, but it may require more detective work on your part. n

Family Caregiver Alliance’s “Where to Find My Important Papers” will help you collect information which will simplify communication with government agencies such as Social Security or the Veterans Administration, help with banking and other financial transactions, and make speaking with your parent’s at-

n

torney, accountant and physician easier. Legal documents, such as Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and Durable Power of Attorney for Asset Management can and should be prepared before a health condition makes it impossible for your parent to do so. For more information, read, “Legal Issues in Planning for Incapacity.”

different. You will find that, among a host of things, family dynamics, financial resources and the ability of your parent(s) to provide guidance for the support that they desire will shape your situation. You can expect your caregiving responsibilities to include, at a minimum, two key functions: information gatherer (from your parent[s], websites, books, word of mouth, etc.) and coordinator of services (contacting potential service providers, scheduling, coordinating payment, monitoring medical care). Do plan on traveling and spending some time on the phone to arrange care and services.

SeniorsBlueBook.com

One organization to contact to find an attorney knowledgeable about estate planning or with special training in elder law is the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. n

n

To keep things in order, long-distance caregivers will benefit from keeping a care notebook — a central place to keep the important information that you gather. If paid caregivers are employed to provide care to your loved one, you will want them to maintain a separate notebook documenting medication administration, vital signs, and other key physical and mental health status information.

Several companies in this Seniors Blue Book can help you. Contact one in the Non-Medical care providers listing, or the Care Management listing. ~ Editor’s Note: Source: www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/ long-distance-caregiving-parents/ Indicates website link on seniorsbluebook.com

Understanding Your Aging Parents: One of the keys to understanding our Seniors’ Top 10 parents as they age is to get a grasp Fears on the things that worry them. Our parents may not talk openly about these things, but you can be assured that they think about them—a lot. A recent study conducted for the Home Instead Senior Care network identified the top 10 things seniors fear most. 1. Loss of independence As parents age they begin to see this independence slowing slipping away as their cognitive or physical health deteriorates. It’s important they keep as much control over their lives as possible, so always try to ask if you can help or offer options instead of making major decisions for them. 2. Declining health Declining health of course means loss of independence and is often a tough subject to talk about. Your parents may reach a point where they need daily assistance with personal care or can no longer safely maintain their home but resist help because they fear they’ll lose their independence or home. 3. Running out of money Even those who have been prudent and have wisely put aside funds sometimes worry that they won’t have enough. They worry about what will happen to them—and the burden it could put on their loved ones.

94 SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI – FALL 2015–WINTER 2016

It’s often hard for seniors to talk about money but you can ease into the conversation slowly. Make sure their basic expenses are covered then gradually open the discussion to their long-term financial plans. One conversation opener is to ask how they’d like their affairs handled if they become incapacitated to broach the subject. – 4. Not being able to live at home For most seniors, home is much more than the house they live in. It’s a place packed with memories. It’s familiar. It feels safe and it’s a huge part of their identity. Like most fears, talking about the subject will help alleviate the stress. Discuss future options such as hiring a live-in companion, downsizing, and senior housing and listen carefully to your parents’ opinions. 5. Death of a spouse or other family member Most seniors worry more about losing a loved one than they do their own death and fearing the loss of a caregiver can be extremely stressful. Discussing the possibility is the best answer because it allows your parent to look at the future more objectively.

RESOURCES FOR AGING WELL

7. Not being able to drive Giving up the car is a serious blow to seniors. It’s one more act of independence that they have to forfeit. They are no longer free to come and go as they please but have to depend on others. If it’s no longer safe for your parents to drive you should make sure they have reliable transportation, even if it’s just for a spur of the moment Sunday drive. 8. Isolation or loneliness Being alone increases feelings of being “unwanted.” Likewise, losing the ability to drive heightens the fear of isolation or loneliness and both can lead to depression. Whether it’s rotating family member visits or a network of neighbors it’s important that seniors get out and about and socialize regularly. 9. Strangers caring for them We all generally prefer to be around familiar faces. Having a stranger provide care (especially for intimate needs) is extremely uncomfortable. While having a family

member as the primary caregiver may be ideal it isn’t always feasible, so if your parent needs outside help you should vet the person carefully and make sure a family member is present until you’re sure your mom or dad is comfortable being alone with them. Listen carefully to any concerns your parent has and don’t discount their (or your) instincts if something feels “off.”

6. Inability to manage their own activities of daily living Perhaps nowhere is the loss of independence so acutely felt as in the inability to perform normal acts of daily living, such as eating, dressing, and bathing. Older adults fear losing control of their lives and requiring help in these areas is an unwelcome reminder of that. It’s important that your parent continue to do as much as possible even if it takes twice as long.

10. Fear of falling or getting hurt. Most seniors know that they are not as sure of foot as they once were. They know that if they fall or otherwise injure themselves that it will impact their ability to do things on their own. Many falls can be prevented so install hand rails, remove slipping hazards such as rugs, and take as many other precautions as possible. Check medications for side effects that may cause dizziness and keep on top of your parents’ health. It’s important to understand the fears our aging parents face. Often fears grow bigger when they’re not vocalized so it’s important to discuss them in an informal conversation. We don’t have to talk with them about these things all the time, but it can help temper our reactions when we better understand why they sometimes react the way they do. ~ Editor’s Note: This article was posted by Jim Fuller, Administrator at Daystar Retirement.
